Workplace Job Associated Violence Catherine Flores, Self Defense, Bushido Karate Workplace violence is a serious occupational risk for workers, accounting for approximately 1,000 deaths and well over a million incidents of non-fatal assaults each year. An education and training plan is critical to ensure all workers are aware of potential security hazards and ways to protect themselves. Ongoing education and development for staff must emphasize the recurring nature of workplace violence, along with the environmental occupational and interpersonal factors that may lead to violence, encompassing risk appraisal, self-defense, defusing techniques, assertiveness, anger management and stress management. Combustible Dust Safety Robert E. Dayringer, Senior Level Industrial Hygienist, MIOSHA Combustible dusts are fine particles that present an explosion hazard when suspended in air under certain conditions. A dust explosion can cause catastrophic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of buildings. This presentation will discuss the scope of industries impacted by the Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program in Michigan, the range of citations issued and combustible dust inspection procedures.
Robots—Are You Compliant? Anthony Neroni, Senior Safety Advisor, MIOSHA Does your company use robots? Do you know the safety rules? This presentation is designed to identify the guarding requirements, operational parameters, and lockout procedures not typically taught during traditional robotics training. Slips, trips, & falls is one of the most frequently reported injury causes; yet the cause is so simple that we typically overlook the impact that this injury creates. This presentation will focus on slip, trip, & fall awareness within the workplace.
Bloodborne Pathogens Catherine Flores, Infection Control - Employee Health Coordinator Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Whether or not you work directly with the public you need to protect yourself from exposure to bloodborne pathogens. These are disease causing germs that are carried in blood and body fluids. Knowing how these infections are spread will help you prevent them. Many workers are required by law to follow Standard Precautions - do you remember what these precautions are? OSHA requires protective controls to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens - these controls will be discussed during this presentation.

Landscaping has been identified as one of the 13 highest-hazard industries and will be the target of enforcement because of the high injury and illness rate. Ergonomics: Back to Basics Sharon McFarren, Ergonomics Engineer TriMedia Environmental & Engineering The word “ergonomics” is sometimes misunderstood and often conjures up images of office chairs and stretching programs. As an Ergonomics engineer, it’s become a mission of Sharon’s to reeducate people on what ergonomics actually is, and how to use it to your advantage at work and at home. This session will focus on the main risk factors of ergonomics: force, frequency, posture, and duration. We will discuss what each term means, where they are found in the workplace, and most importantly, how to minimize these risk factors - which account for more than 1/3 of all workplace injuries.

Carlson, MD, MRO; Medical Director Dickinson Occupational Clinic Between synthetic marijuana and increasingly liberal medical marijuana laws in many states, employers are concerned about the impact of these substances in the workplace. Bath salts unquestionably pose a high safety risk and should be considered a threat to workplace safety. This presentation will focus on the fundamentals of laser safety, including the recognition of laser hazards in the workplace. Proper guarding, necessary training, classes of lasers, and laser safety officer requirements are just a few of the topics to be covered. ANSI Z136 will also be discussed.

Topics include facts about Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, Helium, other inert gases, flammable compressed gases and how to transport and store cylinders safely. Training materials will be provided for the session.
You Can’t Make’Em Learn Susan Roll, Coaching for Results Adults aren’t nearly as easy to teach as children – but they are ready to engage in something they like or are interested in. This session covers the 5 Principles for effectively teaching (or persuading) adults and take your Safety Meetings (or Programs) to the next level. Your safety program will be more effective and you can become a better trainer or teacher of adults when you apply just a few of the key principles taught in this session. You can evaluate your current program against proven criteria and create a plan of (easy) improvements that will make key safety topics more appealing. Just one appealing teaching technique can re-energize someone’s willingness to learn more. You will walk away with ideas for improving and updating your approach to teaching and promoting safety in less than an hour. MIOSHA Appeals—What Are Your Rights and Responsibilities Dawn Jack, Director MIOSHA Appeals Division, MIOSHA Attendees will be instructed on their rights regarding the appeals process extending from an inspection and resulting citation. The step process for employers to reduce or eliminate a citation or subsequent penalties will be discussed as well as the employer’s responsibilities when entering the appeals process.
D e s c r i p t i o n s Scene Safety at a Pipeline Event Blake Olson, Technical Supervisor, Enbridge Energy This presentation begins with an overview of the Enbridge U.S. liquids pipeline routes and the commodities shipped through that system. The focus for the session will be scene safety at an event, teaming with local first responders, and how preparedness and quick response help to minimize the threat to the public and damage to the environment. We’ll wrap up with a Q & A and provide information about our Safe Communities program, which provides grants to police agencies, fire fighters, including volunteer firefighting organizations in rural communities, and EMS in the communities where Enbridge operates.
