MOULI LUO The trail is composed of broadwalk and mulched path. Four types of glass tubes are installed along the tail. The tubes are inserted into soil with different deepth, but the top of them are kept at the same elevation. Most of the site is in the floodplain, so that the tide and stormwater would create many ponds within the site. With the tubes installed, visitors can see the water level changes with the tubes. INDEPENDENT STUDY:
THE ROLE OF SKETCHING IN DESIGN
I used pen and markers to practice the step inbetween representational drawing and analytical drawing. From this step, I started to keep my sketch away from too many details, and tried to look for the connection among objects.
By: Mouli Luo Advisor: Richard Alomar Sketching is an important tool for landscape architects. It helps to record immediate feelings and thoughts on the landscape or the natural environment nature to better understand the things the things seen and experienced. Sketching also requires the connection between mind and hand, which helps with the expression of design ideas. The Learning Goals for this study are: Learn to take visual notes and document the landscape through sketching. Practice and improve sketching skills by using different drawing media, and modes of representation. To achieve the goals, I chose Passion Puddle as my study object, to observe and sketch the landscape in and around Passion Puddle. The research process, which is shown in the following sections, is inspired from the methods that Le Corbusier came up with during his trip to the east and Europe. The process of sketching includes representational drawings, representational drawings with a level of abstraction, analytical drawings, visual note taking/diagramming. I put observation at the beginning of the process, so that the five steps become a complete process of understanding a site. The observed objects include trees, puddle, building around, topography, weather, and their interactions.
OBSERVATION
14
Representational drawings are drawings that render exactly as one sees it. In this process, I used water color as drawing media, trying to capture the color of the objects. Also, I tried to create a scene in each drawing, to represent how multiple objects, such as trees, buildings, and roads, interact with the environment.

Analytical drawing is used to unpack or break down what one sees so that to get a better understand on its elements, tease out new concepts, or provide new interpretation of the subject matter. At this step, I zoomed in to individual objects that I think could represent the feature of the Passion Puddle. For instance, I sketched tree locations, tree species, tree barks, and lawn, that I think are the essential elements of Passion Puddle. Also, I started to write notes along with sketches, which will be the transition to next step.

The whole process reaches it abstract terminal at visual note taking and diagramming. This step answers the question of how to make a purposeful sketch or a complete observation. Also, this could be the begin of reproduction.
