R E L A X AT I O N Commercial Restaurant Design - San Francisco

Circle is the basic shape of this design, and it is developed into a modular system through out the entire restaurant. This system is designed to seprate people up into different groups and give them a chace to experience a transition from isolation to immitation, so people will be surrounded by more soft foams as they go deeper.

All of the blue curvy parts in the drawing are made from soft memory foams, which is mean to make people to relax themselves from different pressures and slow down their living path.

UNDER DARK SKY Desert Pod Design - Ramon Crater, Israel

v This is project is located in Ramon Crater in Israel, and it is built for travellers or researchers to view the night sky. People are able to see the milky way, most of the collstellations and satellites there, so it is necessary to stay away from light pollution in that area. Based on the mid-east culture there, a triangular pattern had been designed after our researches.

According to the wind rose in the Ramon Crater, wind blows the strongest from north west, this is another reason why this pod is designed into a irregular shape. The exterior material contains two layers, the outer one is made for blocking wind outside and keeping warm, the inner layer is made from smoke mirror glass, because it is able to block interior light at night and avoid light pollution during the night time.

Exterior Skin

When the wind becomes strong, people can close the exterior skin to block it and protect the pods.

DIFFUSING SUNLIGHT

The concept of the entire design is for people to experience a strong contrast between the simple exterior design with the complex interior design. This pod contains three layers, which is designed for diffusing sunlight, air ventilation and mitigating wind loads. Both of the interior and exterior layer is flexible and able to open and close for different situation when using the space, and these flexible structures are designed besed on the local patterns, the pattern we used is designed based on Mideast cultures, combined with three different types of patterns and designed a new one.

MITIGATING WIND LOADS

Moudle for interior skin Interior skin in made by two types of moudles, and they are all comprised by triangles. Poeple can open the structure up, so that they can control the size of the openings. The shape of it is designed based on the local patterns and cultures.

This is the diagram shows how we arrange the interior pattern on the ceiling, the opening of the pattern vaires from large to small from the center point.

INTERIOR PLAN & SECTION Dining Area The limitation of the height of the design provides a chance for us to design these-levels within 15’, there are four levels in total, and each level has its own function. For the large pod, people can sleep on the underground level, which is warmer and darker for people to sleep in the extreme dessert environment. The upper levels contains kitchen, dining area, kids playing area and study, each of them interlace with each other with enough space for people to stand or walk. The spacial arrangment for the small pod is similar with the large one, most part of the building are underground level, so people need to goes down for entering the space. After entering the space, sleeping area is the first level people can see, there are some flexible structure above the bed that allows people to open it and watch the darksky at night.

RIGID TO FLEXIBLE

The technique of this project is to use one single line to create a repetitive pattern, which will result in a flexible and controlable system. The whole structure was designed based on a hexagon, and seprate it up into triangles. Through using the central points of the triangles, the basic shape of the pattern can be drawn from the points and spread into different directions.

3D Print Sample

Printed by the Fortus 450 MC (GARMET) using the material Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene , also known as ABS, a material commonly used in personal or household 3D printing, and it is lightweight, has good impact strength, also, it is abrasion resistant and affordable.

Top View This shape of pattern allows rigid material to be bended and stretched easily just like fabric, but at the same time, people will not loss control of it completely. Front View

FA B R I C AT I O N

This concept was developed from a 2D pattern, and the central points were draged up and down and bring this pattern into 3D.

The basic shape of this idea was developed from concept 1, this idea mean to provide more gap between each module by using a curvy shape. The curves go up and down and this part of design limits the flexibility of this design and make it become more controlable.

The trangular modules lock with each other, this allows the flexibility for this rigid module, the small gap between each module provides limitation of the movement and make it become more controlable.

DIPHYLLEIA Materials - White Silk Organza 100% silk - Yarn 100% wool - Wire

The Product was developed by using circle as the basic design element, after unite and tie them together, this piece will become an interior curtain for blocking sunlight and exterior air pollution, also, it can be used to seprate space up. The basic materials in this project including wire, silk organza and yarn. (silk and yarn are all natural, metal can be reused again and again)

This project can be installed on the ceiling, and different scale of each module provides different functions in different spaces.

Wire made joint between each module, this product can be installed by customers easily.

The unit should be playful and flexible, people is able to play with it, for example, they can pinch or stretch each single circle in the way they like to adjust the direction and the intensity of the entire curtain, at the same time, the organza in the middle of it will be stretched and show layered fabric, then the transparency will also be changed as the changing of the wire.
