11 INSPIRING RULES OF THUMB FOR DIGITAL CREATIVES AND THEIR TEAM LEADERS

Belgium-based agency Wieni delivers digital products that people actually need, use and love. In doing so, Wieni honours one important ethos: they want to leave the web a better place than it was when they arrived. To achieve this goal, Wieni holds on to 11 key principles, such as: The uglier the baby, the better: about how you should look at the first drafts of your work when you start sharing it. Don’t let yourself get lost in cosmetic details, but look at the key features and evaluate them from a user’s point of view. Do your best to do as little as possible: about prioritising simplicity and doing one thing exceptionally well. And how to avoid too many bells and whistles. Think beyond the deadline: the web lives on forever. So keep the concept of eternity in mind.

40 ICONIC HOTELS IN A CLASSY AND NOSTALGIC COFFEE-TABLE BOOK FOR ANYONE WITH A SOFT SPOT FOR STYLISH TRAVELS AND THE GRANDEUR OF YESTERYEAR CLARIDGE’S LONDON, ENGLAND

London has its fair share of exquisite grand historic hotels. None can be said to compete with Claridge’s, the landmark Mayfair hotel in the city’s most prestigious and expensive borough. It’s one of the best five-star heritage hotels in the world, unrivalled for its combination of timeless elegance, understated luxury and near-faultless service, delivered by confident and well-trained staff at the top of their game. Gliding through the hotel’s famous dark-wood revolving doors onto the gleaming Art Deco checkerboard floor feels elegant and indulgent. The dazzling lobby buzzes with staff. Larger-than-life flower arrangements by luxury London florist McQueens Flowers trim a chandelier-topped table. Opposite the smart reception, an elegant lift is manned by a dapper attendant in tails. It’s a fantasy world that feels far removed from the buzz of central London. Taking in the sight of this magnificent red brick building from the outside, it’s impossible to imagine that Claridge’s began as a hotel in a single house. It was run by William and Marianne Claridge, who, in an ambitious move to expand, bought the adjoining five buildings in 1854. When Richard D’Oyly Carte – the owner of rival London hotel The Savoy – acquired Claridge’s in 1893, he demolished the original buildings. He also hired Charles William Stephens, the architect of iconic London department store Harrods, to build the Claridge’s we see today. Claridge’s has always had a reputation as a haven for the elite. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed in the 1860s. In 1945, Winston Churchill visited after his election defeat. In the 1950s, in shimmied a stream of screen stars: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Yul Brynner, Bing Crosby and Spencer Tracy, who is said to have exclaimed he’d rather go to Claridge’s than heaven when he died. In the Noughties, a new generation of British creatives took over. Supermodel Kate Moss celebrated her 30th birthday here, while fashion designers Jade Jagger and Lulu Guinness are said to have called the hotel their ultimate treat. Claridge’s is fresh from a refurb several years in the making, which includes a five-storey basement home to a subterranean spa and an otherworldly rooftop suite. Yet its atmosphere and design remain firmly rooted in the Jazz Age when it was transformed into an Art Deco icon. Many of the features added at this point are still intact, like the front entrance, a façade of Roman stone, the opulent ballroom with its gilded ceilings, where flappers and the bright young things of London once danced the Charleston, and the shimmering glass screens in the Foyer & Reading Room. The latter is a hit for breakfast, lunch and the Claridge’s famous Afternoon Tea, a hotel institution.

CAMPER FOOD & STORIES – ITALY

PASTA ALLE VONGOLE Pasta alle vongole has to be our favourite dish in the world and we think most people are inclined to agree with us. This is the classic way of preparing it. We don’t add tomato or any other ingredients which – in our humble opinion – don’t really belong in this dish anyway. Instead of clams (vongole), you can use the shellfish or seafood that you like best or that is available in shops or at the market.

Serves 4 1 onion 2 garlic cloves 2 chillis 1 kg vongole (small clams) ½ bunch of flat-leaf parsley 400 g linguini or spaghetti 100 ml olive oil salt

Finely chop the onion and the garlic. Finely slice the chillis. Rinse the clams twice. Finely chop the parsley. In the meantime, cook your pasta. Set the timer for 2 minutes less than the package instructions recommend. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the garlic and the onion with the chillis. Tip the clams into the pan and give everything a good shake. Put the lid on the pan. Don’t let them cook for too long. Add the pasta to the clams and stir or toss well. Sprinkle with some parsley leaves and season with salt. Toss again and serve.

Liguria’s Riviera has two parts. The Riviera di Ponente extends to the west of Genoa, with wide beaches. We visited the eastern part, the Riviera di Levante, with its rugged rocks. The ideal way to explore this amazing coastline is by boat. We took the ferry to Portofino. There are several departures every hour and you buy your ticket on the spot from the ticket office. Our boat stopped at Santa Margherita, Portofino, and San Fruttuoso; they are all just 15 minutes from each other. From the water, you can see how breathtaking the Ligurian coast is, with countless inlets and small bays such as Baia del Silenzio, and small towns that dot the rocky hillsides. PHOTOGRAPH A BAD HABIT TODAY AND DELIBERATELY AVOID DOING IT FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.

PHOTOGRAPH THE IDEAS THAT ARE SWIMMING AROUND IN YOUR FAVOURITE DRINK.

We all have bad habits. Your heroes, your friends, your mother, your boss – everyone. Choose one of your bad habits today and visualise it. How would you photograph your bad habit? You don’t have to quit the habit altogether, just consciously avoid doing it today. Just for one day.

Go to a bar – the bigger, the better – by yourself today and order your favourite drink. Look around, listen, think, sip your drink, and then think some more. Enjoy this time all to yourself and this world of ideas that was there all along, for which you have finally created some space.

When you say no to temptation, the power of this temptation only strengthens your willpower. Enjoy the energy boost today (it might even leave you wanting more).

The photo of your drink will take you back in time to this moment.

“I count him braver who overcomes his desires than he who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.”

“I used to go to Bob’s Big Boy restaurant just about every day from the mid-seventies until the early eighties. I’d have a milkshake and sit and think. There’s a safety in thinking in a diner. You can have your coffee or your milkshake, and you can go off into strange dark areas, and always come back to the safety of the diner.”

CREATIVITY

How important is colour in your work? I work mostly in colour, and occasionally in black and white. Colour is important. I prefer not to use thousands of different colours and I’m not really a fan of saturated colours, never have been. Growing up, I was surrounded by a lot of abstract art, which also had simple colour use and simple shapes. I do colour researches for certain projects, but when I’m making things out of paper, there aren’t a million colours to choose from and somehow, I always end up with a yellow or a red and a blue. There is lots more to be discovered, so I would like to do more with it. What is your work process like? I start with big pieces of paper that I fill with written and sketched ideas. I didn’t have a computer while I was at art school, so I actually made everything by hand. I would often cut paper or create shapes with ink and then photograph what I drew. I used to scan the pieces of paper, but that’s a lot of work, so now I make very small drawings and then blow them up on the computer. That’s how an image usually starts. A circle can be made in Illustrator, but usually it’s inspired by cut shapes or hand-drawn shapes, and I develop it further from there. Who or what has been the biggest influence on your way of creative thinking? I believe that everybody is a creative thinker. I also believe that creative thinking is always happening and developing. The things that inspire me can come from daily conversations with a stranger or a beautiful picture, or the way someone sees a thing or the world. I once had a teacher who said: “A character with no eyes has no life”. Those are the kinds of things that I never forget. Whenever I make a figure with no eyes, I think of him—so in this case he did influence me, but I don’t always listen to advice. I generally just really enjoy seeing people doing their own thing and being really passionate about it. Erik Kessels, for example: I think it’s wonderful how he dives into these photography archives and re-archives them in his own way. Maybe it’s a universally human thing to be obsessed and fascinated by something. I think sharing those fascinations with each other is really nice. Even conversations with my mom about what I’m making can be inspiring.

What is failure to you? In my creative process, I always go through a phase of making a lot of things that don’t satisfy me. I have a friend with whom I share my failures or ’ugly things’, to make it okay to look at them. I always go through this rough patch where I feel lost, not knowing where I’m going. I have come to realise that I need failure to advance and grow. I have the same conversation with students who expect to always be making better work, comparing themselves to the people next to them. Everyone has their own process. I’ve come to embrace the failure. Actually, a process without failure and challenge is not one that satisfies me very much. Somehow, I always know I’m going to be unhappy before I’m happy, which might be a cycle that I’m used to. Maybe that’s the way life works for me. Has the Covid-19 pandemic influenced your creative life? The pandemic has put a lot of things into perspective for everyone. We’re figuring out what is meaningful to us, what we need and miss, and what we can do without. Creatively, Covid-19 has given me more room to breathe and therefore more headspace. The assignments have continued to come in, but deadlines seem to be less rigid. I have also discovered how lucky I am to have my own studio space. I share eighty square metres with one other artist, so there was always enough distance, as well as good company. Somehow when we were inside our studio, we could almost forget what was going on in the outside world. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard? A piece of advice that I give to students—and to myself during a creative process—is that when I’m stuck or I wonder why it’s not working the way I want it to, I try to recall the last time that it did work. What was I surrounded by? What was the time of day? What was I listening to? Then I try to recreate this habitat so that I feel comfortable and ready to let the creative process bloom.

Everybody is a creative thinker.

BEST BUILDINGS – BELGIUM is the second, extended and revised edition of the guide Belgium’s Best Buildings that was first published in 2012. It is an elegant and easy to use guide for architecture fans and for everyone who is curious about architecture in Belgium. Starting from the Top 10 lists of renowned Belgian architects, 94 buildings completed after 1900 were selected and are presented in this new edition. It features a surprising mix of buildings, from award-winning contemporary projects (such as a crematorium that stands in a seemingly endless landscape), over historical must-sees (such as the Stoclet palace), up to less obvious buildings (such as a brutalist church in West-Flanders) and breathtaking architect’s homes.

Wallace Falls State Park is a great destination in the springtime in the Northwest, when rain and snowmelt fuels the waterfall. The trail is enjoyable even during springtime rains, as there’s a lot of forest cover that takes most of the brunt of the precipitation. This hike starts about an hour from Seattle. This hike will give visitors the perfect taste of how great hiking can be in the PNW, though it is not by any means an easy hike. Over the 8-miles round trip, you’ll get to see a spectacular 100-foot waterfall (at its best in the springtime when rain and snowmelt aid its flow) and a beautiful alpine lake. Try to hike here on a weekday. Take a short ferry ride from Fauntleroy (West Seattle) to Vashon Island for this scenic hike. Construct your own loop of varying mileage, heading counter-clockwise from the Dockton Park Boat Ramp. The Gold Creek Trail at Green Mountain is one of the few trails that actually offers a view of the Seattle skyline. Enjoy your journey to the trailhead, which can include a ferry ride if you choose, and take a moment to observe some of the logging efforts you’ll see along your hike. The timber industry has played a huge role in the development of the PNW.

This is a somewhat neglected gem of fifties architecture in the heart of the Marolles. Swimmers have the choice of two pools, one above the other. The pool on the third floor has big windows at one end which allow you to look down on the roofs of the Marolles. A friendly, curious place.

430 LA PROMENADE The JAM Hotel recently installed a discreet Japanese-style Atsukan bathhouse in the basement, along with a sauna and bar. Designed by Lionel Jadot, the space is lined with ten traditional wooden bathtubs surrounded by heavy patchwork curtains. You plunge into the hot tub, then pad around in a kimono while sipping a sake. The handpainted signs in Japanese add to the sense that you are somewhere in Tokyo.

A little-known 60-kilometre green route for cyclists, joggers and walkers runs +32 (0)2 775 75 75 around the edge of the city. It includes environnement.brussels quiet stretches through parks, wooded valleys and rolling farmland. Easily reached by metro or bus.

VERTE

The name is Swedish. It means Healthy & Sweaty. So you know what to expect. The idea is to get fit while having fun. Not expensive. Here is one of the strangest places in the city. Built in 1954 on top of a sevenstory car park, this complex comprises three indoor tennis courts modeled on Wimbledon’s. Many of the world’s great tennis stars have played here, but it is now a modest club for local players with a tennis workshop and a quaint bar.

Wander north along the Antwerp waterfront and you eventually reach a row of 17 abandoned harbour cranes. These giant machines were once used to unload cargo from ships in Antwerp harbour. They are now preserved by the MAS museum as examples of industrial technology. The oldest is a wooden crane from 1907. The more modern electric crane with the number 400 KA was built in 1950, while 410 KD dates from 1961.

The spectacular train museum opened in 2016 in a renovated railway station in the Brussels suburb of Schaerbeek. The dramatic interior was conceived by Belgian comic strip artist François Schuiten, while the ominous background music was composed by Bruno Letort. You can climb on board a steam locomotive, peer inside a luxury sleeping car and inspect nostalgic railway officials’ uniforms.

The little town of Lier contains three extraordinary clocks constructed in the 1930s by the local watchmaker and amateur astronomer Louis Zimmer. He began by building a beautiful astronomical clock on the outside wall of an abandoned tower from the 14th century. It features two globes decorated in blue and gold and ten clock faces with signs of the zodiac, tides in Lier, phases of the moon, days of the month, months of the year and other arcane facts. Zimmer went on to design a Wonder Clock which he exhibited at New York’s World Fair in 1935. Described by the New York Museum of Science

SKY MIRROR BY: ANISH KAPOOR IN FRONT OF: Monte-Carlo Casino Place du Casino 98000 Monaco

2

PABLO BY: GABRIËL STERK Place des Patriotes 06250 Mougins Alpes-Maritimes

Anish Kapoor’s majestic mirror sculpture sits in the square in front of Monte-Carlo’s casino. The polished disc of concave steel, measuring 2,5 metres across, is an installation by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor and was created in 1999. On the one hand, the simple sculpture contrasts strongly with the Casino’s belle époque splendour; on the other hand, Sky Mirror turns the world upside down, giving the illusion of bringing the sky down to street level. Perhaps Kapoor wanted to add a playful albeit critical element to the chic elegance of Monaco and its casino?

This oversized bronze statue of Pablo Picasso’s head was carved in 2008 by the Dutch artist Gabriël Sterk. You can find his statues of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh in La Rotonde in Aix-en-Provence and in front of the asylum in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, respectively. This one stands on a terrace with a panoramic view overlooking the countryside around the hilltop town of Mougins. The statue is hard to miss as it is 2,4 metres tall and weighs 500 kilos. The work is a tribute to Pablo Picasso, who lived and worked in Mougins from 1961 until 1973, the year he died. The famous artist’s studio used to be housed in the building where the town’s tourist office is now located. He and his wife Jacqueline Roque lived in Mas de Notre Dame de Vie, next to the eponymous chapel.

Book a table at the brandnew restaurant of Laurens Snykers and Lien Buntinx if you’re up for a culinary adventure. The innovative seasonal tasting menu always includes a wide range of forgotten plants, root vegetables and seeds. As asparagus take pride of place in the Belgian terroir, we recommend booking a table at Leeuw during the asparagus season, which starts mid-April and runs until the end of June.

The green herb garden of ’t Aards Paradijs (paradise on earth) invites you to enter this converted shoe factory. Chef Lieven Lootens and his family have been running this restaurant for over 30 years now. His cuisine expertly pays respect to the natural flavours of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Lieven himself is a big fan of bees, as they pollinate no less than three-quarters of all our vegetable crops. Is it necessary to state that his honey-infused vegetable dishes are not to be missed?

and landscape, in which garden design and fashions from across the centuries, including work from famous landscape architects, are preserved. A botanical garden established by the royal family, Kew opened to the public in 1840. Today, you can find one of the biggest and most diverse plant collections in the world here, plus acres of lush greenery to wander around. The standout stars, though, are the garden’s perfectly preserved Victorian greenhouses. Palm House is humid and tropical inside while Temperate House, the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse, is home to 1500 species of plants from the world’s temperate zones. Both are total stunners.

111 SYON PARK’S GREAT

In the grounds of 16th-century Syon House you’ll find a well-preserved, delicate glasshouse with a bold, domed roof. It was built in the early 19th century and filled with an array of exotic plants. Visit after dark in the run-up to Christmas to see the conservatory and surrounding parkland illuminated with colourful lights as part of Syon Park’s annual Enchanted Woodland trail.

Once one of the largest in the world, the Grade I-listed, 300-foot (91,5-metre) glasshouse in the gardens of Chiswick House has since been dwarfed, but it’s still well worth a visit. It was built in the 18th century to house the Duke of Devonshire’s impressive collection of camellia plants, and 200 years later it’s still doing the same job. Go to spot the ‘Middlemist’s Red’ camellia – it’s one of the rarest plants on the planet. Afterwards, explore the rest of the gardens, which include walled kitchen gardens which supply the cafe, a symmetrical Italian garden and huge Atlantic blue cedar trees. The Beatles filmed Paperback Writer and Rain in these gardens.
