We’ve had many connections with Barnsley in recent seasons, with several players having appeared for both clubs as well as winning promotion together from League One a couple of years ago.

In July we both completed the Great Escape on the final night of the Championship season, and after we won 1-0 at Oakwell on the opening day of the current campaign, I said that it would prove to be a big three points because Barnsley would be a completely different proposition this year.

That has proven to be true with the tremendous run of results they strung together to put themselves in play-off contention, and we know that they will pose as tough a test this afternoon as we’ll face in our final eight games.

Of course, we are pleased with how we have progressed too, and a win this afternoon will take us past our points

We had played really well in the 1-0 defeat to Swansea in the previous game and deserved something from that one, and apart from a couple of early openings for Coventry here, I felt we were comfortable in all three of those matches.

We were disappointed with how we started both halves at Derby on Good Friday, and ultimately that is what cost us the opportunity of recording a third double of the season, having already beaten Sheffield Wednesday and Preston home and away.

We certainly had the chances to not only draw level, but go in front at Pride Park, and I was pleased with how we played for large periods of the game. But you have to be ruthless and take your chances when they come along in the Championship.

I’ve said it before, but we really feel that we should be higher than we are in the table, and if we had been able to play our game in hand against Rotherham when it was scheduled, I firmly believe that we’d now be comfortably in the top half.

What this group of players has achieved so far has been fantastic though, especially without the advantage that we have playing here every other week with a full house inside Kenilworth Road.

That day will come again very soon, but for now, thank you once again for your continued support from home.

MICHAEL MORAN Good afternoon to everyone watching today’s game at home on iFollow. I hope you have all had a great Easter so far and been able to meet up with a few long-lost friends and family members, despite the rapid drop in temperature since this time last week.

We hope the action out on the Kenilworth Road pitch will warm us this afternoon as Nathan, Mick and the team look to take us past the 51-point mark that triggered such memorable celebrations at the end of last season – a night when Barnsley also partied into the night after pulling off a remarkable win at Brentford to secure their Championship status, too.

Like ourselves, the men from south Yorkshire have really kicked on in the condensed and relentless 2020-21 campaign, and have gone beyond the expectations of many by forcing their way into the play-off mix, sitting comfortably inside the top six at kick-off today.

It promises to be an intriguing clash and one in which our considerable contingent of ex-Tykes will be out to put one over on their former employers as we welcome Cauley Woodrow back to Bedfordshire in Barnsley red.

As a departure from the norm, I have been asked to pen these notes today having

reached another milestone in our long and winding road to our new stadium.

In providing an update on our planning developments it’s usual to go back a few years and summarise again, all of the various milestones we’ve reached and the hoops we’ve had to jump through.

Suffice to say, there are few unexpected obstacles over the years we’ve had to navigate. I think though that most supporters are now as familiar with the story as we are in the development team and, like us, would prefer now to focus on the exciting future ahead.

However, we know there are many anxious questions you have, which I’ll endeavour to answer to the best of my ability.

When will the first match be played at Power Court? Our answer is we believe

that will be 2024. Can we guarantee that? Absolutely not. Any number of issues outside our control could come out of the woodwork and cause delays – who would have guessed, when celebrating winning those consents many months ago, that we’d be hit by a global pandemic!? Known challenges that can affect timing are another thing but can be managed, but there’s always the very unlikely possibility of finding a misplaced gas main or an archaeological treasure chest just off St Mary’s Road.

Finance is of course another issue. As you all know we don’t have an enigmatic/shady billionaire sitting behind us to write a cheque for a 23,000 seat stadium. The investment to date from the board has been fantastic and has enabled us to purchase all land at Power Court and Newlands Park freehold (and fund the whole development process to date). However, we still have to maximise the value of our land and conclude deals with occupiers and development partners.

The economic headwinds of Brexit and the pandemic have certainly not helped but I am pleased to say we have financial appraisals that work (with very little compromise) and an investment model that is being borne out by discussions and negotiations taking place right now which gives us every confidence that we are on track.

It is worth re-stating though how unique our project is. We are seeking to deliver a stadium everyone can be proud of without saddling the club with a crippling debt or without any subsidy or handout from either local or central government.

This is something that has never been done before – at least, not that we are aware of.

We are committed to delivering the project in the right way on a sustainable basis such that the new stadium and its surroundings will be such a valuable as-

set to the club for it to thrive long-term.

In a world where numerous other clubs are selling their prize assets for a shortterm gain or necessity, we want Power Court to be somewhere you, your family, your children and grandchildren can enjoy for decades to come. Combined with Newlands Park we want to make a positive contribution to the town such that, in years to come, Luton is known for having an iconic stadium in the heart of the town, fully owned by the Club, and one that makes most true football fans green with envy.

So – next steps; It will likely be a close-run thing between us announcing development partners for initial phases at Power Court and Newlands Park and confirmation of revisions to our planning permissions for the two sites. This should be May/June. But please note, we should be on track to build out our initial phase of residential at Power Court and see shovels in the ground before the end of the year under the revisions we have already made to the original consent (this was confirmed in December 2020).

As ever, we need you to support and get behind our new planning applications, just like you did so emphatically with the original applications. However, we are now looking at more nuanced aspects of the sites – the principles of development have already been established. That’s not to take anything for granted and Luton Borough Council, of course, needs to do their job, but we are definitely not expecting anything like the process we had before!

Our wider plans are still critical to making everything work. The stadium cannot happen without residential development around it and commercial space at Newlands Park. Fortunately, whilst some markets have suffered in recent years, we have good demand here still and, as part of this, we are looking to actually increase the number of affordable homes at Power Court from before.

The most exciting part of the project is of course the new stadium. In the next few months, we can share more detailed designs based on our evolved thinking of the last few years and your feedback here will be important.

Lastly, I want to repeat that our guiding mantra is always to respect, and be proud of, Luton’s culture and diversity.

We will ensure our plans are befitting of this. Ultimately if we don’t do it, nobody else is coming forward with wholesale regeneration of the town centre. Both the town and the club have had to face more than their fair share of challenges over the years. We hope now they can come together for a brighter future which, with your patience, could be as early as 2024.

In the meantime, there is plenty of excitement at what we have seen on the pitch at our current, much-loved home, and we are desperate to see Kenilworth Road packed to the rafters again as soon as possible.

As always, the Club will continue to fight for you to be back in number and ensure it is done in a safe and controlled manner, as we saw with the small crowds allowed in for the Norwich and Preston matches in December. As the majority of the nation becomes vaccinated, I know the Club is planning for capacity attendances from day one of next season as we start the countdown to saying farewell to the old place.

Enjoy today’s game and keep up your fantastic support from home. Without your season ticket purchases and donations, there is no way that we would be in the position we are now with eight games to go. So well done to everyone for playing your part and, on behalf of all at the Club, thank you.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and his team-mates are keen to put loss against Derby County behind them ahead of this afternoon’s Easter Monday fixture against Barnsley.

In comparison to performances prior to the international break it was a reality check for the Hatters, who are still striving to amass as many points as possible from now until the end of the season.

Derby scored within the first five minutes of each half, condemning the Town to a first defeat in three matches and the Leicester loanee reflected on that post-match.

“The start of both halves we had two lapses in concentration that cost us,” the midfielder admitted. “First-half we conceded an early goal and then I thought after that we created a lot of chances and probably deserved to go in at the break at least level.

The 22-year-old has now made over 30 appearances for the club since joining on loan from Leicester City and is eager to impress as the season nears its conclusion.

“I think I have progressed a lot as a player, I have learned a lot here, not just as a player but as a person. Working under different coaching and management, working on new things, a new style of play and it has only benefitted me. You have your ups and downs, you are never going to play well the whole season, but it is about how you react to that and to adversity.

"I feel like I have grown as a person and a player and it is only going to be a positive for me going into the rest of my career.”

“We said at half-time we want to start quick and keep them on the back foot but obviously there was another lapse of judgement at the start of the second half which suddenly kills the game off.”

was on a year long secondment from the local Education Authority as the local radio’s education specialist. But he soon made himself indispensable and stayed at the radio station for the rest of his life.

E M O C N O U YO TERS T A H It’s hard to believe, but it is 10 years since Ian Pearce, a broadcaster held in high regard by Hatters supporters, passed away suddenly having suffered a massive heart attack.

He was popular not only because his on-air comments were invariably cheerful and to the point during matches at the mic alongside me, Simon Oxley or Simon Pitts, but they came from the heart. A Luton Town fan through and through, on a rare Saturday off he would buy himself a ticket and sit among his mates up in the main stand.

We kept in touch through our mutual love of the Town, even when I left the Beeb to write the sport for the fledgling Luton on Sunday. And I often combined my writing duties with summarising broadcasts with Ian and Geoff Doyle. This arrangement continued when I became the Town’s Clubcall correspondent.

Typical of this was our visit to Huddersfield Town in September 2002. By this time we had established a routine of travelling together to games via the venue’s local Weatherspoons or similar for a meal and a pint.

And he was cheered to the echo for his comments at the microphone in that historic open meeting called to keep our beloved (and severely threatened) football club out of the hands of one John Gurney.

Pearcy and I joined Radio Bedfordshire (as BBC 3CR was initially called) within a few weeks of each other in 1989. He

Huddersfield Town, Pearcy had the idea of attending the game in formal dress and we duly turned up in dinner suits and bow ties (see picture below).

We turned up in trainers and jeans, which offended their previously undisclosed dress code. The press box there shares an arena entrance with the Director’s Box who presumably were in danger of an attack of the vapours at the sight of those offending uncouth items of clothing.

It must be admitte4d that the jobsworth on the gate and the rest of the Yorkshire folks took the joke in good part and we were treated with great respect, especially by the Directors.

We were eventually allowed in, but under escort to and from our seats and told not to move under threat of death or worse.

Suffice to say Steve Howard scored the only goal late in the game. It made our day.

The next time we were privileged to visit

He wasn’t just a talented radio presenter but as a former English teacher he wrote really wittily too. The ‘Pearce Takes’ pieces that he wrote for a number of years on the Three Counties website were very observant and unfailingly funny. He would be thrilled to see the Hatters progress up the leagues since those dark days of the Conference.

A glass half full man if you like, as I am usually, which is why we were such good friends for 22 years and why my glass has seemed strangely empty at times over the last ten years when l think of him on a Saturday afternoon - with his sudden and untimely passing.

BRADLEY COLLINS Joining Chelsea at the Under-12s level, goalkeeper Bradley Collins progressed through the youth system at Stamford Bridge, eventually becoming a regular for the club’s Under-23s and Under-18s.

As a player, Valerien Ismael enjoyed a successful career, having spells at Crystal Palace, Werder Bremen, and Bayern Munich, before going into management.

His first foray into coaching was at Hannover 96, initially as assistant manager, later becoming manager of the second side. The Frenchman also had spells at Wolfsburg II, Nurnberg, and was appointed manager of Wolfsburg in 2016.

Ismael was sacked after a short stint in charge, with his next role being at Apollon Symrnis, leaving after one game. He then managed Austrian side LASK, leaving in July 2020. The 45-year-old was appointed Barnsley manager in October 2020.

The 24-year-old’s first taste of first-team football was with Forest Green Rovers, spending the 2017/18 season on loan at The New Lawn. He would spend the following season out on loan, too, with Burton Albion his next destination.

In June 2019, Collins left Chelsea on a permanent deal and signed for Barnsley. This season, he has shared goalkeeping duties with Jack Walton, with Collins coming into the side in recent weeks.

DEFENDER

MADS ANDERSEN Beginning his footballing career at various youth sides in his native Denmark, Mads Andersen came through the academy at Superliga side Brondby, where he made a solitary first-team appearance in the Danish Cup. Andersen spent the 2016/17 season on loan at Koge, before leaving for Horsens permanently. He spent two seasons with the club, becoming a regular starter in his second season.

The 23-year-old left Denmark for England in 2019, signing for Barnsley. Since making the move to Oakwell, the Dane has become a vital part of the Barnsley defence, featuring regularly both last season and this season.

RADAR MIDFIELD

ALEX MOWATT Club captain Alex Mowatt is an experienced player at Championship level, and has been a key player for Barnsley since his move to the club in 2017.

He began his career with Leeds United, and made over 100 league appearances for the Whites, before joining Barnsley in 2017. The 26-year-old spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Oxford United.

He returned to the Tykes’ first-team for the 2018/19 season, and played an instrumental part as he enjoyed a very successful season, being named in both the EFL and the PFA Teams of the Year.

WOODROW Coming through at Luton Town, Cauley Woodrow made three first-team appearances for the Hatters at only 16 years old, all coming in the FA Trophy.

United States international Daryl Dike was a January signing at Oakwell, joining the club on loan from MLS side Orlando City.

The Premier League came calling for Woodrow, with Fulham signing him in 2011. The 26-year-old spent eight years at Craven Cottage, having a number of loan spells away. His loans included Southend, Burton Albion, and Bristol City.

During his youth career, Dike played for his high school side, and later played for OKC Energy U23. The 20-year-old would later play for college side Virginia Cavaliers, enjoying good form in front of goal.

Another club Woodrow signed on loan for was Barnsley, before it was turned into a permanent deal after six months. The striker has been a regular for the Tykes, and is their top goal scorer so far this season.

He was selected in the MLS SuperDraft by Orlando, and became a regular for the side in the 2020 season. A day after making his senior debut for the US national side, Dike signed for Barnsley on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

CLUB HISTORIAN ROGER WASH DELVES INTO HIS ARCHIVES...

The Town were on the up with a youthful side balanced by a few wizened heads, and although they eventually finished a distant third in 1952-53 behind Sheffield United and Huddersfield, it still represented the highest final position in the club’s history at that point.

Former England international forward Jesse Pye weighed in with 24 League goals that season, as well as mentoring the young Gordon Turner, who was to end up the club’s all-time record scorer.

The visit of relegation threatened Barnsley in March 1953 was typical of a number of high scoring wins at Kenilworth Road with Pye pulling all the strings and, although not on the scoresheet that afternoon, setting up chances galore for his teammates.

The Town finished 6-0 victors with pairs for Turner and young winger Mike Cullen, an own goal from Tykes’ Jasper Yeuell and a strike from Charlie Watkins.

In turn, we aim to run a series throughout the season in the programme showcasing artefacts and memorabilia in our collection reflecting the club’s rich history.

Today we feature one of our many railway handbills advertising cheap train tickets to away games. Looking at the timings for departing Leicester you would need to be an Olympic sprinter to get to the station in time. It states a 15 minute walk but it always seemed a lot further to me!! THE CAMERA NEVER LIES

The glorious 1981-82 campaign had seen the Hatters walk away with the Division Two (now Championship) title.

The final home game was against Barnsley who had inflicted one of only four defeats suffered that season.

A combination of trophy presentation, a carnival atmosphere and probably a bit too much celebrating beforehand meant that the Town were second best to a Barnsley side who held a 1-0 lead until the death when Brian Stein netted a stunning equaliser.

A insight into the academy and our bright young prospects with ANDY AWFORD U21s The U21s have continued their games programme in recent weeks with fixtures versus Gillingham (2-3), Oxford Utd (1-4) and Spurs. All the games have been highly competitive and given the players some very useful outcomes as we try to prepare them for senior football. Next up is a trip to AFC Wimbledon followed by a shorter trip to Stevenage.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT U18s The Youth team have played three fixtures since the last Academy update: Millwall (5-0), Northampton (3-2) and Crystal Palace (2-3). The Northampton game threw the team a different challenge as we were reduced to 10 men very early in the game. It was great to see the team overcome the one man deficit and still go on and win the game and control it for large parts. Next up we entertain Peterborough at The Brache.

U16s The U16s have recently travelled to Northampton (5-1) & Derby County (1-1) for competitive fixtures and during the current Easter holidays have taken the opportunity to come into The Brache during the day and train alongside the current U18s which has been great experience for them as they start to prepare for life as an apprentice footballer next season.

U9-15s A busy Easter schedule sees us go up against Chelsea, our own Community Department and Coventry City at schoolboy ages. All these games will give the players plenty of learning opportunities. It's been great to have the boys back in our everyday programme of late. We will extend their programme of work a little longer than the norm as they have missed so much football with us this season.

LUTON TOWN COMMUNITY TRUST Hatters Trust launch new four-year strategy for 2021-2024 The Hatters Community Trust have launched their new four-year strategy with a pledge to ‘Rebuild capacity and Reconnect communities’ following the devastating effects of the pandemic over the last 12 months.

Focussing on three core strategic areas of work, the Trust will continue to deliver projects around health, education and inclusion on behalf of the Football Club.

We are sorry to report the passing of two loyal Hatters in recent weeks.

Albert Stone was a season ticket holder and member of the Bobbers Travel Club, who sadly passed away on Friday 12th March – his 92nd birthday. With his two daughters, Albert sat in the Kenilworth Road End for many years and not only followed the Town home and away, he also attended reserve games and local cup competitions.

Another long-term supporter to have sadly passed away, in February, is Debbie Musk, whose husband Phil told us: “Debbie’s sporting passion was Luton Town FC and she would often reminisce about seeing the team home and away in the 1980s, her favourite memory being the 1988 League Cup final.”

Manager Nathan Jones reflected positively on a midweek win under the Kenilworth Road lights after his side deservedly beat Coventry City.

“It was probably a little bit more open than we would have liked first half. Structurally we were fine it was just the centreforward got in too easily and that is something we want to rectify because that wasn’t good enoug

"We were clinical and I thought we moved the ball really well.

I thought we were a threat first half and second half, once they went down to ten-men, I felt we were dominant, especially when we tweaked things slightly.”

The Gaffer said: “We got away with one when they hit the post, but I thought we deserved that bit of luck. Performance levels were excellent and the pleasing thing is they were playing with a bit of freedom second half, and sometimes it is difficult.

"You have to stay calm, you have to make the right decision and I think we did. The coaching staff make the right decision, we went to a diamond and nullified their central numbers and we were excellent, it should have been far more comfortable.

Manager Nathan Jones was delighted the Hatters were able to reach the 50-point mark after defeating Preston North End at Deepdale.

The Hatters forced a breakthrough with seven minutes to play after James Collins’ header was deflected into the back of the net by goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, a goal the team deserved for their efforts throughout the 90 minutes.

“To come away from home and to get three points is magnificent, especially here which is a difficult place to come.

I have come here with Stoke and got beaten. Alex is renowned for putting teams out that are very difficult to beat, they work hard and have quality, but I felt we were the better side today.

“We came here really positive, played a diamond and we might have made it slightly easier for ourselves, but we’re delighted with the win and to get the win away from home to back-up our performances.

“We felt comfortable and then it was just about us stepping it up. I can’t second guess what anybody else is going to do, we just felt if we could step it up then the game was there.

We did step it up slightly in the second half but it took three substitutions to get us over the line, and we’re delighted.

“It is a tough place to come and we have had games where we haven’t quite got what we deserved, and there were margins today, but we came out on the right side.”

PELLY-RUDDOCK MPANZU Words: Dan Briard

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu felt the Hatters controlled the game from start to finish and deservedly claimed three points against Preston North End, prior to the international break.

It was the second win in succession for Town following the victory against Coventry, and the midfielder was instrumental in helping the team succeed – producing a Man-of-the-Match performance as voted by our Twitter followers.

Mpanzu produced the cross in the 83rd minute that fell into the path of James Collins, who, with the help of goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, put the ball in the back of the net to earn the Hatters’ first win at Deepdale since 1972.

The former West Ham youngster was also glad his fine performance wasn’t in vain, saying: "I just keep my head down and keep going. Listen, playing good and not winning is not a great feeling, so to play well and get three points is wonderful stuff.”

It was the seventh win Town have claimed on their travels this season, all 1-0, and Mpanzu added: “We have had some great away performances. We beat Forest, Bournemouth, and sometimes you have to grind out a one-nil, they’re the best victories.

When you don’t concede and you win one-nil, you go home with three points happy.”

With eight matches left to play this season, Pelly wants his team-mates to keep their foot on the gas and strive to get as many points as they can in the forthcoming matches, starting today against Barnsley.

“For me, if there’s pressure on it might make you play better, but it’s nice when you go into a game feeling a lot better that if you make a mistake you can keep going and it doesn’t affect us too much.

“We’ve got to take that mentality out of our head though and “I thought we controlled the whole keep playing games and winning, get a winning mentality in game,” Pelly admitted. “First half was a the club.” bit scrappy, first 10, 15, we tried to get the ball down but that is how the game went. Had a couple of chances, I had a chance, deflected. Breezy had a chance, but I thought for 45 minutes we dominated, only thing missing was a goal.

“Second half we kept going, kept putting balls in the box and Eli (Adebayo) had a good save from the keeper. Thankfully I put a ball in, I don’t know what happened, I think it was an own goal, but three points is what we needed!”

Manager Nathan Jones was disappointed his side weren’t able to continue their form prior to the international break following defeat against Derby County on Good Friday.

The Rams scored early in each period and whilst the Hatters had chances themselves, it was the home side who claimed all three points at Pride Park.

“We are not a team that can chase a game at two-nil, and we don’t usually have to do that," said Jones. "We started both halves really poorly I felt. Credit to Derby, they started fast but we allowed them to come onto us a little bit and we conceded.

If we had seen that period out, then for the next half-an-hour I thought we were excellent and created enough chances to have got on the scoresheet.

“We wanted to start well after the first goal but it was the

polar opposite, we didn’t. From our corner they break, we had numbers back, but we didn’t defend it well enough and suddenly it is two-nil."

On Elijah Adebayo, he added: “He had three or four chances.

He has to score the counter-attacking goal in front of the keeper, but he was a real threat. He attacked the ball well and he gives us a different dimension, so we are not going to berate him too much because it is a massive learning curve, but he should have more goals than he has already.”

The Chairboys earned promotion from League One last season via the play-offs, beating Oxford United in the final and entering the second tier of English football for the first time in the club’s 133-year history. Two years before, Wycombe gained automatic promotion from League Two alongside the Hatters, finishing with four fewer points.

GROUND?

The Blues have played their home fixtures at Adams Park since 1990 and initially the ground had a capacity of just 6,000.

Since then, this has been increased to 9,448, the lowest in the Championship. Wycombe shared their ground with English Rugby Union side London Wasps from 2002-14, and Reading Women from 2016-2020.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

The Hatters last met Wycombe in early October at Kenilworth Road, with a late Elliot Lee strike following up Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu’s curling effort from outside the box to seal a comfortable 2-0 victory. Having risen from League Two to the Championship at similar paces, the two sides have enjoyed some fierce battles over the years, most notably the Hatters’ 2-1 win at Adams Park in 2017 where two injury-time goals, from Scott Cuthbert and James Collins, saw the Town fightback to win late on.

KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU

Former Hatters midfielder Mike Keen made 144 appearances at Kenilworth Road before enjoying a four-year spell as Wycombe manager beginning in 1980, whilst more recently 2005 League One Champion Matthew Spring joined the Chairboys in 2012 after making over 300 appearances for the Hatters.
