NATHAN JONES Good afternoon and welcome to the 2020-21 Championship season at Kenilworth Road. I wish I could be saying that as a physical welcome, but that day is coming closer and we cannot wait.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT The end of last season was bitter-sweet really, because on nights like the Blackburn game when the Great Escape was complete, we needed you here with us to mark it properly.

That was the sad part of a great occasion for me, because there would have been 10,000 packed inside the place – just as there would be today and on Tuesday night – and it would have absolutely rocked.

We kicked off the home campaign with what was really an extension of the pre-season match programme when Norwich came in the Carabao Cup. We always get a side just relegated from the Premier League in these early stages, and although they had players missing, it was a good win.

I was proud of my team up at Oakwell, as I was of the ones who played at Reading on Tuesday night. The sheer volume of matches over a shorter period of time makes this a real squad game for this season, and we have strength in every position.

The addition of Jordan Clark, Tom Lockyer and Rhys Norrington-Davies, along with the return of James Bree, have been wonderful bits of business and I thank Gary and the board for making those moves happen in such a difficult time financially for our club, and many others.

We’d like to get maybe one more in, but as we showed during my first spell here, Luton Town have a tradition of giving youth a chance and we have some excellent prospects already in the building. They can grow in our environment at The Brache, which is a fantastic one for development.

Today we welcome Derby County, one of the great, traditional names of English football, and their manager Phillip Cocu, who had a stellar playing career with PSV, Barcelona and the Dutch national team.

It is also an opportunity to go up against England’s record goalscorer as a barometer of how far some of our players have come since our days in League Two. Finally, I’d like to thank you for the fantastic messages I’ve had in recent weeks, and the kind words when I’ve been out and about locally. They mean so much. THE BOARDROOM

DAVID WILKINSON Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials from Derby County for our first home league game of the season.

We are extremely disappointed (in football parlance, gutted) that we are unable to greet a selection of fans at what could have been a pilot event to test the safe introduction of spectators into the Kenny.

I’m sure it goes without saying that this is simply not just a case of opening the doors. There are various higher authorities that we would need to gain approval from, not least our local Safety Advisory Group who authorise our safety certificate, and whilst the plan was in place the Stadium has to be fully sanitised, seating chosen and segregated, invitees contacted and advised of protocols amongst a long list of other administrative matters.

Despite the fact that we are operating a covid-induced skeleton staff, we have planned for the possibility that this would happen, but the physical work cannot be started until we received the green light. This was the problem.

We are responsible for the health and safety of our supporters, our staff and, of course, for our neighbours in the immediate vicinity, and have to make decisions based upon the facts available at the time. The inexcusable failure to be able to get any response from the EFL for nigh on 24 hours led us to wrongly assume that we were not going to be on the list. On Tuesday we were given a couple of hours to make a decision, which we did, realising that speed was of the essence, but the silence that followed frustrated our efforts and made safe entry unviable in our opinion.

Of course we appreciate that the preponderance of Covid makes everything into a movable feast, but it seems to me, personally, that there is a massive lack of joined up thinking from the top down and it is understood that the EFL themselves could be confused by directives and actions from government.

We sincerely hope that those who are participating this weekend are successful and all those attending keep safe. We

At least we’re on Sky, but that hardly compensates. Nevertheless, we've had some great performances to get to this game and another chance to test the squad at a higher level. Then it’s on to the most important game of the week, Watford – last there 15 years ago and it’s hard to believe that seven years ago we were 88 places below them in the pyramid and a betterment today will place us above them in the table. It shows just how far we’ve come and how proud we should all be to have got back where we belong.

A couple of other important matters we are aware of and want to respond to. We understand how much radio coverage means to many of you and we were always anxious to re-establish it as soon as possible. The problem arose because BBC Three Counties did not want to pay the same fee to broadcast commentary as they did last season, demanding that

we take a reduction. Our charges have not increased and we see no reason that the product be devalued to such an extent, having retained our Championship status. The BBC licence fee has not been reduced and it seems likely that they would be less affected by Covid than most. We are pleased to report that after face-to-face discussions with them this week, a resolution has been found and full, live commentary will be available from today going forward.

IFollow is a bit of an enigma in that the majority find it works well, but some have problems getting access or of it dropping out during broadcast. As you are aware, it is an EFL product and we are having a dialog with them to try to resolve the difficulties. Please persevere and don’t hesitate to let us know if you continue to have problems and tell us what they are.

However, we should acknowledge that, as a product and service (whilst imperfect) it has been a blessing to have it where other leagues (such as the one above us) have no streaming service at all. It has come a long way since it was launched, and it will continue to improve as we bear with it.

Thank you all for the support you have shown us. The take-up of season tickets is remarkable and very much appreciated. Rest assured that we will be doing all we can within the regulations to enable you to attend games, whilst making sure, until then, that the streaming service is fit for purpose.

The Hatters captain looks back on a winning start to the season...

I said after Saturday’s game at Barnsley that a 1-0 away win was my favourite result in football. So it’s fair to say that it’s not been a bad week, has it?

The only sad thing for us, as is the case today, is that you won’t be here to get right behind us from the moment we walk out onto the pitch. There would have been a packed stadium here for both matches, and as players we are desperate to have that roar in our ears once again.

The gaffer has credited his predecessor, Graeme Jones, for the work that went in before lockdown, because results had turned. We can look back on that 3-2 win, when we came from behind to lead 2-1, and then responded again when Derby equalised late on to net the winner within a minute, as a huge result. We only lost four more times in 18 matches after that, which for a team anchored in the relegation zone for half a We’d already had the first round Carabao season, was a tremendous turnaround.

NEW PLAYERS

MEET THE N JORDAN CLARK 26-year-old Jordan Clark became the Hatters’ first signing of the summer after joining from League One side Accrington Stanley on a free transfer.

‘Clicker’, as he’s known amongst the squad, began his football career with Barnsley and last season netted eight goals and provided nine assists in all competitions for Stanley.

The Yorkshireman said: “I had the opportunity to meet the gaffer and as soon as I did, I just said ‘Yes, I want to sign there.’ We just clicked straight away and the way the football club is, the way it’s run, the team spirit and everything – it suits me down to the ground.”

TOM LOCKYER Welsh international Tom Lockyer was acquired on a free transfer following a season with Charlton Athletic in the Championship.

The 25-year-old has almost 350 senior appearances to his name – including 12 international caps – and played twice against Town last season with the Addicks after joining them last summer from Bristol Rovers.

“Ever since I met with the gaffer, I really bought in to what he was saying, and I can’t wait to be a part of it," said Lockyer.

“I leave everything on the pitch, I’m wholehearted, wear my heart on my sleeve and want to win at all costs.”

NEW BOYS JAMES BREE Following his successful loan spell at Kenilworth Road last season, James Bree joined the club on a permanent basis after leaving Aston Villa.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT Prior to his initial loan spell with the Town, Bree came through the ranks at Barnsley and impressed sufficiently to earn himself a move to Villa Park.

The 22-year-old missed just four league games last season and emerged as a key figure in the Hatters’ Great Escape, especially with his form post-Lockdown, and after putting pen to paper he said: “I think everyone saw at the end of the season what we can do with this squad of players."

RHYS NORRINGTON-DAVIES

Wales Under-21 international Rhys Norrington-Davies joined the club on loan from Premier League side Sheffield United.

The 21-year-old left-back started out in Aberystwyth Town’s youth system, before being snapped up by Swansea City and then, in 2017, the Blades.

He netted on his EFL debut for Rochdale last season and went on to make 34 appearances on loan for the League One outfit.

“I’m going to give it my all and make sure I do right on the pitch and hopefully from the performances, get the fans behind me.”

KELLE ROOS The 28-year-old goalkeeper came through the ranks with PSV in Holland before getting his first taste of first-team football with Nuneaton Borough after joining from RKSV Nuenen.

After a matter of months, he was snapped up by Derby in 2014 and has since had a number of loan spells around England.

PHILLIP COCU

Derby County announced the appointment of Phillip Cocu in July 2019.

Cocu enjoyed a long, successful career as a player, turning out for the likes of AZ Alkmaar, Vitesse Arnhem, PSV Eindhoven and Spanish giants Barcelona.

The 49-year-old also amassed 101 international appearances for the Netherlands, before retiring from playing and moving into coaching and management.

He guided PSV Eindhoven to three Eredivisie titles during five full seasons in charge between 2013 and 2018, then followed a brief spell in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

Cocu guided Derby to a 10th place finish in the Championship last season, a position they will look to improve upon this time around.

Roos joined the likes of Rotherham, AFC Wimbledon, Bristol Rovers, Port Vale and Plymouth for valuable minutes on the pitch, before becoming a regular for Derby during the last couple of seasons.

The Dutchman and Ben Hamer shared responsibility in between the sticks last season but Roos finished the season strong and will be first choice going into the campaign.

DEFENDER

MATT CLARKE Matt Clarke began his football career with Ipswich Town in 2002 as an Under-7 and made his debut for the club 12 years later against Crawley Town in the Football League Cup. He went on loan to Portsmouth in 2015 originally and impressed with his 29 appearances that season, prompting them to sign him permanently the following summer.

With well over 100 appearances to his name at Pompey, Clarke earned himself a move to Brighton & Hove Albion last season.

Less than two months later, he agreed to join Derby on a season-long loan and made 37 appearances last season, before re-joining ahead of the new campaign – once again on a loan deal.

LOUIE SIBLEY A familiar name for Hatters fans – Christian Walton became a senior pro at Brighton in 2013 but has since spent his time out on loan.

It’s just over eight weeks since we beat Blackburn here at Kenilworth Road to maintain our Championship status for another season, with a 3-2 scoreline which coincidentally was the same score as when today’s opponents visited back in late January.

Lockyer became the Club’s 53rd full International player before he’d even played for the Hatters following his signing from Charlton. His appearance in the 1-0 win against Finland was the first clean sheet kept by a Luton Town defender in a full International match since Markus Heikkinen in June 2007. Coincidentally both games were played at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki!

Lockyer also became the first Hatters’ player to represent Wales since David Edwards who featured twice in November 2007.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu scored the equaliser against the Rams that night and congratulations to the Club’s longest serving player on picking up three trophies in the recent Supporters' Trust Player of the Season awards – including the overall player of the season trophy.

Harry Cornick went one better though scooping the other four awards available – including goal of the season, for his strike at Elland Road, and the players’ player of the season.

Congratulations to both players on their awards and to Sam Beckwith who picked up the young player of the season trophy.

I’ll take this opportunity to welcome Jordan Clark, Tom Lockyer and Rhys Norrington-Davies to the Club, as well as welcoming back James Bree on a permanent deal after his loan spell.

An opening day win at Barnsley – the first ever away win on 12th September in the Club’s 135-year history – was thoroughly deserved with Collo netting his fourth goal in two games with a clinical finish. This came a week after his second Luton hat-trick on the opening day of a season and his fourth in total for Town.

Only nine players have more hat-tricks for the Club and one more will put him on the same number as Malcolm Macdonald, but he has some way to go to catch Gordon Turner who leads the way with 14!

Collo does now have five more goals than Macdonald (and Danny Hylton) moving him into 17th place in the all-time scorers’ table for Luton Town FC. Talking of Macdonald, it’s 50 years to the day that Luton won 4-0 against Orient at Kenilworth Road courtesy of a brace from both Macdonald and Alan Slough.

The last two home matches on 19th September have seen penalties scored by the Hatters. Steve Claridge in the 1-1 draw against Birmingham City in 1992 and Craig Mackail-Smith in the 1-0 victory against Mansfield five years ago.

After narrow misses in the previous two seasons, David Pleat’s charges got off to a tremendous start to the 1981-82 campaign, and by the time of the visit of Derby to Kenilworth Road in November, stood top of the Division Two (now Championship) table.

The 3-2 win over the Rams was a lot less close than the scoreline suggests but it took a 76th-minute goal from defender Mal Donaghy to make the game safe.

Relive the Luton Town Supporters' Trust’s virtual presentation evening Harry Cornick and PellyRuddock Mpanzu were the big winners at the LTST Virtual Player of the Season Presentation, as the Trust celebrated the Great Escape with their traditional end of season ceremony in a virtual capacity, due to the restraints of Covid-19.

Harry landed four awards on a successful evening for the attacker, winning the Goal of the Season, Bobbers Travel Away Player of the Season, Junior Supporters’ Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season trophies, after a maiden campaign in the Championship which saw him finish as the Town’s second leading scorer with nine goals.

However it was Pelly-Ruddock who landed the big prize of the LTST Player of the Season, as well as retaining the Ian Pearce Memorial Trophy and also scooping the Internet Player of the Season. The three awards capped off a brilliant campaign for the powerful midfielder, one which saw him play and score in a fourth different division during his time with the Hatters.

Sam Beckwith was voted the Young Player of the Season, chosen by the coaching staff, after a season where he penned a development contract with the club, recently resulting in him featuring in some of the pre-season friendlies.

The other award on the night went to 100-year-old Hatters fan Fred Young who was handed the LTST Outstanding Contribution Award, in recognition of the amazing support he has given the club throughout a prolonged period of time.

By club historian Roger Wash With the long awaited Hatters’ Heritage website to be launched shortly, we aim to run a series throughout the season showcasing artefacts and memorabilia in our collection reflecting the club’s rich history.

We kick-off with a large, glossy supplement given away free with the long since departed Luton Reporter newspaper in 1909 - which digital readers can view more closely here.

The Town had finished in ninth position in the Southern League the previous season and hoped for better in the new campaign. Despite the goalscoring exploits of Tommy Quinn and John Smith, the Hatters conceded too many goals and slumped to 15th spot. The Board’s response was to sell Quinn and Smith to Millwall!

THE CAMERA NEVER LIES With three games to play of the 1989-90 season the Town’s eight-year stay in the top flight seemed to be over.

Three wins were needed together with favourable results elsewhere and that’s how events unfolded, leading to a final day 3-2 victory at Derby, coupled with Sheffield Wednesday losing at home to Nottingham Forest.

LADIES Royston Ladies 1 Hatters 1

Report by Thomas Wheatley Luton Town Ladies faced a trip to Royston Ladies for their 2020/21 season opener last Sunday.

Town’s final ball was lacking and it was looking as though Royston were the most likely to go ahead.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT The Town started quickly, captain Jess McKay going through one-on-one with the Royston keeper but she was unable to get her shot on target.

It felt as though it was just a matter of time until the Hatters took the lead, but while the Town defence looked solid, Royston started to grow into the game around 20 minutes in, creating a couple of chances.

Luton had their best chance of the half and arguably the game on 22 minutes, McKay winning possession after the Royston keeper had spilled it and playing it across for Dionne Manning, who somehow had it nicked off her toe on the goal line.

That was until debutant Dawn Mallett took things into her own hands from about 20 yards out and chipped a beauty over the Royston keeper. Not a bad way to mark her first game in two years!

The lead didn’t last long however, Royston equalising less than two minutes later with a peach of their own, the ball dipping and swerving away from Kirby in the Town net to make it 1-1.

The heat and lack of playing time was starting to affect the quality of the game, and any opportunity to break for Luton was wasted with a poor final ball, though they could have won it with 10 to go, as McDonnell found time and space on the edge of the box but rattled the bar with a fierce effort, and the game finished all-square.

The final 10 minutes of the half were scrappy and end to end with no clear-cut chances and it was 0-0 at the break thanks to some good defending and poor final balls.

The sides went in at the break goalless, and the second half was dominated by the home team.

RIP MARTIN BROOKES Everyone at Luton Town was sad to learn of the passing of life-long Hatters fan, and season ticket holder Martin Brookes.

Martin was able to see the Hatters play in the Championship last season and had also purchased a season ticket for the 2020/2021 season In his younger days, Martin played football for Queensman FC in Ampthill before deciding to be ‘the man in the middle’ and taking up refereeing. One game he always fondly remembered, was refereeing a match between Luton and Liverpool at Luton in front of a crowd of nearly 20,000.

Martin was a Vice President and Committee Member serving on Bedford & District Sunday Football League for 37 years, helping to arrange local grass roots Sunday football, and attending matches on Sunday mornings. He also served on Bedfordshire FA Council and was made a Vice President a few years ago.

In December 2018, he was presented with an engraved crystal decanter and glasses to commemorate 30 years’ service to Beds FA. Martin started to feel poorly early in April, and was only diagnosed with penile cancer on 12th August, and died on 31st August 2020 aged 71, with his partner Janice and brother Stephen at his bedside. He will be missed by many including all his friends who sat near him 35 at Kenilworth Road.

LATEST GROUP OF FIT HATTERS RETURN TO KENILWORTH ROAD

After what seems like a lifetime away, our new cohort of FIT HATTERS made a welcome return to the Kenny this week.

We do this through the 12-week structured programme comprising 45 minutes in the Eric Morecambe and 45 minutes of activity sessions in the stadium, once a week, designed to encourage long-term behaviour change to support more inactive people over 35 to become active.

E M O C N O U YO TERS AT FIT HATTERS is a free health programme for men and women aged 35-65 who are looking to lose weight, get fitter and lead a more active life.

The 12-week programme is delivered by coaching staff from the Hatters Trust and Luton Wellbeing and is for Hatters fans just like you and who want to lose weight, learn about healthy eating and take part in an exercise programme that our Fit Hatters say they are too busy having fun to realise that they are exercising.

Effectively we turn the dear old Kenny into an open-air sport centre every Wednesday evening with the Eric Morecombe suite serving as a classroom for our healthy tutorials.

This week our first cohort of FIT HATTERS from earlier in the year were on hand to welcome our new cohort and they already have plans to start their own walking football club on Wednesdays across the road on the Beech Hill Primary School’s astro MUGA, once the facility re-opens.

This is how the programme effectively works long term – by creating friendships among our supporters and then sustaining change once our 12 week intervention comes to an end as each cohort maintains their weekly workout encouraging each other.

We still have a couple of spaces on the current FIT HATTERS programme as we have split groups to remain socially distanced. The main aims of the programme are to improve eating habits, cut down on alcohol, increase activity levels and reduce weight and waistline and importantly, stay that way long term.

Manager Nathan Jones was delighted his side were able to make a winning start to the Sky Bet Championship campaign with a fantastic 1-0 win away at Barnsley.

James Collins’ second half goal was the difference between the two sides and Jones said: “Apart from their chance, it was probably as good an away performance as you’re likely to see in terms of solidity, what we did and how we pressed. They (Barnsley) will be nowhere near where they were last year, they are a good side and I think that we have played very, very well today, I really do.

“I thought we pressed really well, we were organised, we gave them very little. We lacked just a little bit of quality in the final third, if we did then we would have had more chances but when you’ve got a goalscorer like James Collins, you get opportunities and he puts it away.”

He added: "No disrespect, we played these eight weeks ago or whatever it was, and they were better than us, they pressed us and we had to contain them and drew the game.

“Total change today. We were on the front foot, we pressed, we had energy, we were aggressive and I’m really proud of my team today, I thought they were excellent from start to finish.

Thoroughly deserved a win. It's a difficult place to come to because not many will win here. They beat Forest last week and the way the play, the aggression, the freedom they play with, I’m so proud of my boys.”

James Bree is relishing the upcoming test against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup third round after the Hatters maintained their 100 per cent winning start to the season with victory over Reading.

The 22-year-old made his first competitive start after joining the club on a permanent basis at the Madejski Stadium and continued where he left off after lockdown with good work up and down the right-hand-side.

The former Villa man featured 42 times for the Hatters last season, but his best form came after lockdown as he starred in the Great Escape, claiming four assists and three clean-sheets in the last nine fixtures.

“Obviously now the game is over, we can look to Man United next week and that

Opening up on his time as a Town player so far, the 22-year-old admitted: “It was a tough start, I think the fans were getting on me a little bit at the start of the season, rightly so off performances, but I think since I came back after lockdown I've been playing well. It has been annoying the fans haven’t been in because I feel like if I was playing, they’d be happy with me. Hopefully they’re all watching on iFollow!”

His adjustment period took no time at all as Bree referred to the lads being ‘unbelievable’.

“It’s a really good set of lads so it was a good decision to come back. I still have my apartment in Milton Keynes, so it was a really good transition. It was something I was looking forward to as soon as I left, as soon as I heard Luton were interested, it was dead-on that I wanted to come back, so it was good for both parties really.”

WHO?

The Greater-Manchester based side were founded in 1878 and boast a haul of 45 major honours, the second best in England behind Liverpool, however they do hold the most top-flight titles with 20. Hatters Littlewoods Cup winner Mal Donaghy made over 400 appearances for Luton before being brought to Manchester United by manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 1992. Donaghy went on to make 89 appearances for The Red Devils over four years, winning the European Cup Winners Cup and European Super Cup in the process. Current Hatters midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe is a product of United’s youth academy, signing as a scholar and then professional in 2009, and making his senior debut as a substitute in a league cup tie against Newcastle in 2012.
