THE MANAGER

NATHAN JONES Good evening to everyone ahead of our Sky Bet Championship fixture with Millwall. Whether you are watching on Sky or iFollow Hatters tonight, I hope you are safe and well and looking forward to seeing a reaction to Saturday.

One of our great strengths over that time has been our ability to always bounce back after a poor performance and heavy defeat. I remember us beating Lincoln at home on New Year’s Day after losing at Port Vale in the League Two promotion season.

E M O C N O U YO TERS T A We lost here against Cardiff last Tuesday and although I was naturally disappointed, I was pleased with our performance overall. We were in control of the game in the first half, so much so that their manager Mick McCarthy felt it was slipping away from them. But losing two centre-halves mid-game was a blow, and they produced a moment of pure class from a player who we know is capable of that, but even after their second it was ourselves who continued to ask the questions after that point.

Stoke was hugely disappointing, not only on a personal level but as a team, because we know we are better than that. This group of players don’t let us down very often, and over my four years here in total, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I’ve felt they have.

In League One we were 3-0 down at Peterborough after half-anhour, but beat Southend here under the lights four days later. Even after the defeat against Reading last year, we responded by going unbeaten for the rest of the campaign, and after losing 4-0 at Cardiff earlier this season, we beat the league leaders here in our next match. I have no doubt that the players will be right at it tonight, because they are a great group with character and desire to improve, as they’ve proved by coming through the divisions together. It will be tough, because Millwall are an excellent side with an experienced manager in Gary Rowett, who I welcome to Bedfordshire along with his staff and their players, but we want to improve our current position and keep looking forward. Finally, I want to say thank you to you all, as ever, for your constant support. I know the news last night wasn’t positive about you being able to come back before the end of this season, but please be reassured that we appreciate the contribution you have made immensely.

Without your season ticket purchases, the club would be in real financial difficulty, and it is no coincidence that our best two home performances have come in the games against Norwich and Preston, when some of you were here. We are gutted that you can’t be again just yet, but we want everyone to stay safe and keep supporting the team from home as best you can. Enjoy tonight's game and COYH!

TOWN NEWS After appointing a new recruitment team with Phil Chapple and Jay Socik joining ahead of the Cardiff game, the Club announced the second part of an internal restructure last week with a view to solidifying our position in the Championship and maintaining long-term progress on and off the pitch. At the executive level of the organisation, a senior team comprising of four key existing personnel has been appointed to support Chief Executive Officer Gary Sweet in his day-to-day running of the Club as part of the Club’s long-term operational plan. Financial controller Tom Schofield, who has been at Kenilworth Road since late 2017, becomes Finance Director and Paul Watson, who joined the club as general operations manager almost three years ago, and is now the Operations Director. Head of human resources Jemma Osborne arrived at the club in October 2019 with previous experience of working in football at Arsenal, and she now becomes HR Director.

While head of commercial Chris Bell – the former Wasps rugby union player who joined from his role as Head of Partnership Delivery at the Ricoh Arena club just over a year ago – is now Commercial Director. On announcing the appointments, Gary said: “In the shortterm, nothing much changes with our executive and Club management team, it is more of an evolutionary process than revolutionary redirection as Power Court and Newlands Park become more of a reality, and my time is inevitably drawn more towards those two projects that are crucial to our future. “The board and I feel now is the right time to create an executive team that will support me in the running of the club, with the pandemic adding to the workload of those at the top of the organisation, too. “The four new directors are already in place, doing their jobs on a day-to-day basis, but will now provide greater leadership in these core areas to help keep the club progressing both on and off the pitch as we look to maintain and continue our ambitious development.” SWANSEA MATCH SELECTED FOR LIVE TV COVERAGE The Hatters' home clash with Swansea City next month has been selected for live broadcast on Sky Sports. The date of the Kenilworth Road fixture will remain the same, Saturday 13th March, but the kick-off time will be brought forward to 12.15pm. Season ticket holders will receive their iFollow Hatters pass as usual, but no match passes will be available for this game as it is a Sky exclusive.

ANDREW SHINNIE Although he left to join Charlton on loan on summer transfer deadline day in mid-October, last Friday saw another of our back-to-back promotion winners, Andrew Shinnie, officially bid farewell to Luton Town. With his contract up in the summer, the 31-year-old midfielder’s move to the League One club was turned into a permanent transfer to enable the Addicks to play Shinnie along with their five other loanees as they seek to break into the play-off places. If they do seal a passage back to the Championship, it will mean a fourth promotion in five years for the Scotsman, who won the Scottish Championship title with Hibernian the season before joining the Hatters, initially on loan, from Birmingham in the summer of 2017. Manager Nathan Jones is on record saying how Shinnie took a big pay cut to drop from the second tier to the fourth, but recouped it by helping the Town to successive promotions to the Championship. So was the move everything the Aberdeen-born playmaker expected it to be? “Everything and more to be honest,” he says. “It is what I expected though,

because my feeling coming to Luton, after speaking to Nathan, was that there was genuine belief that we could go back to back and get promotion to the Championship. “I knew it wouldn’t be easy going into League Two, because it’s a tough league, but it was about looking ahead to future years. We all had that belief that we would go back to back. It’s all right believing it, but it’s difficult to achieve, and it was unreal being a part of it. I’ve made some great memories and loved my time at the club.” The first season did prove tough, especially at the end as Shinnie didn’t feature in the team for the final month of the campaign. He made 34 appearances, scoring three times, but admits having doubts about his future after not being selected in the matchday squad for the game that clinched promotion, when his best mate Olly Lee scored the goal that earned a 1-1 draw at Carlisle. Nathan has spoken about how he had to reassure the man who had earned the nickname “Shinniesta” for his silky midfield performances that he was indeed part of his plans for League One, in order for him to sign permanently following his release from St Andrew’s after two-and-a-half years out on loan. “I had a few words with him!” laughs Shins. “No, I just spoke to him because you want to play football, don’t you, and I was a little bit upset. You just want to be involved and be part of it as much as you can, and when we got promoted, I wasn’t part of the day and not in the squad. “But as soon as I spoke to him he said ‘No, you are 100 per cent being here with me next season in League One, it’s going to suit you more, it’s more why I signed you, you’ll suit the higher levels’. He was pretty adamant to get it done as soon as possible, so I thought ‘I have to do it and keep progressing with

the club because Nathan thinks we have a chance to go up again’. So I signed, and that next one was probably been the best season of my career so far, so it’s lucky because if he’d said to me ‘Yeah, see you later, you can leave’, I’d have never got to experience it. “I’m glad the way things have worked out. It was such a brilliant season and I have so many great memories of it.” In his farewell message on Twitter last Friday, Shins thanked both Nathan and Mick Harford as it was during that League One title winning season that the former left for Stoke in early January, with Mick stepping up from his chief recruitment officer role to take charge, initially as interim manager, for the second half of the season.

to win against Oxford to win the championship. It was a nice summer’s day and we just went out and won the game, all the fans on the pitch after the game and getting the trophy – that was amazing. “Sunderland was obviously a good day as well, because it was the week that Nathan had left and there were a bit of panic thinking we might crumble, but Mick took over and we had over 3,000 fans there, massive support, and a whole sense of unity at the club from that moment when we went over to them at the end of the warm-up and heard that roar from high in the stand. From that day on, we just kicked on really and were unbeatable. “There were too many good memories of that season. Portsmouth at home was a massive one as well. There were a few times during the season when you look back and think, ‘That was a big moment’.

“It was quality with Mick doing it, because he’d been in charge when the club dropped out of the Football League and I think he was determined to do it, not to make up for it, because it wasn’t his fault, but to get some relief in getting us back up,” says Shins. “Obviously the last day of the season was unreal, having OUR TOWN | LUTON TOWN V MILLWALL | 23.02.21 | PAGE 11

LUTON TOWN LADIES 5 WROXHAM 0 The Hatters put in a five-goal and five-star display against Wroxham last Sunday to earn themselves a home draw against Cambridge City Ladies in the second round qualifying of the Vitality Women's FA Cup. The game started evenly, Wroxham shading possession in the opening ten, but Town had their first clear cut opportunity a couple of minutes later, Leyah Maddix breaking from right-back and leaving it for Jess McKay, whose cross was put behind on the volley by Dionne Manning.

assist to go with her goal. Malika Gille played a great ball in, which Henman did well to keep in before pulling it back from the byline for Heather McDonnell to smash home. Wroxham had their first opportunity on the half-hour mark, but it could have been three moments later, Henman (involved again) had a one-on-one saved before Manning’s chipped effort fell just the wrong side of the post. In the minutes before half time, Henman won a penalty after her cross hit a Wroxham arm, which was subsequently saved, the keeper guessing the right way to keep out Manning’s effort. Then seconds later McKay hit the post with a long-range effort. It took until the 65th minute for the Town to score a third, McKay chipping the ball over the top once more for Manning to smash home first time.

It looked as though the Town were content with four until the 92nd minute, Henman popping up from Kim Newn’s free-kick to McKay played the ball over the defence fire in her second and the Hatters’ fifth. and Henman ran onto it to head it over the keeper. From then, it was all Luton. An outstanding team performance coupled with incredible A few good chances followed for the individual performances saw the Town into the next round. “But if I had to go for one, the last day of the season was such a good day, because we still had work to do to win the league. It would have been a bit sad if we hadn’t won the title and been presented with the trophy, so to win it on the last day in that style was great.” Shinnie made 41 appearances in that title-winning season, scoring four goals and assisting a further six. His link-up play with Jack Stacey on the right side of the Town attack became a trademark of the campaign, with the Shinnie to Stacey to Collins triangle producing many goals. The Scot was voted players’ player of the year by his team-mates, who also included one James Justin. “It was unbelievable to play in that team,” he says, looking back. “Obviously the full-backs were massive in that team. Jack was unbelievable to play in front of – well, behind most of the time! Stace was unreal and JJ, you just knew they were going to go on to greater things. “JJ has risen faster than you’d have ever imagined, with how well he’s done with a

team fighting at the top of the Premier League. But Jack going to Bournemouth and playing in the Premier League, and now doing well in the Championship, it’s amazing to see players that you’ve played with go on and progress as you would have hoped for them. “Nathan always used to say ‘we’ve got two Premier League fullbacks’, so I guess he was right with that one, and obviously well coached by Nathan, to be fair. He was very good at improving players and getting into their potential, so it’s great to see them doing well.” Andrew cherishes being able to play with his great friends, the Lee brothers, having been best pals with Olly since their Birmingham days together. He was part of the famous Essex Car School, who had a sponsored car for their daily trips up from their meeting point at Brentwood. “It was unreal in League Two with Olly and El, and big Scottie Cuthbert and Pottsy in the car school – we can’t forget the seven-seater Almera! Me, Scottie and Olly had to drive it. Pottsy and El just sat in the back. Flynny Downes as well. We also had the Sunday morning dog walking club. “It was class to do it with so many great lads, and a couple of the best changing rooms I’ve been in, those League Two and League One seasons, and then into the Championship. That’s been a big part of it as well, the team spirit that drove us on.”

OUR TOWN | LUTON TOWN V MILLWALL | 23.02.21 | PAGE 13

That spirit continues, with Shins admitting he made “friends for life”. That includes JJ, who recently told our academy players and coaches on a Zoom session that Shins was the player he was closest to during his time as a senior player. “I love JJ, we still go for dinners – me, him and the girls in London and St Albans,” says Shins. “I still talk to him all the time and have a laugh. I’m gutted for him recently with the injury, it’s such a sad one because of how well he’s been doing. “But stupid as it sounds, it’s probably better doing it on the back of how good a season he’s had. Everybody sees him as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League now. I was gutted for him because he’d have been in with a big chance of getting call-up for the Euros with England.” Finally, Andrew leaves with such fond memories of the supporters who took him into their hearts, and those capacity crowds still ringing in his ears having only been here for a handful of behind closed doors matches at the end of his 106-game Kenilworth Road career. “Full houses every week, it was unbelievable,” says the man who leaves with ten goals to his name. “It was such a great atmosphere there all the time, and I just

loved it. The video that you put up on Friday, you see the clips back of some of the goals at Kenilworth Road with the fans – the Huddersfield goal, unbelievable with the roar that goes up and the celebrations. “It was just mad and how much that is missed in football at the moment, with empty stadiums and the quietness when the goals go in. The fans were always good to me at Luton, unbelievable support. So nice every time you met them, they were complimentary and appreciate what you’ve done for the club. “I’ve had so many great messages and I’ve read pretty much all of them and I appreciate every one of them. It was a joy to play in front of them at Kenilworth Road and hopefully they enjoyed watching me play there as well. “If I can get back sometime soon when the crowds are all back and come back and watch a game and experience the Kenny again, it would be brilliant because I do miss seeing the fans in at the grounds, especially at Kenilworth Road where we were packed out all the time. “We were unbeaten there in League One, and I’ve spoken to a few of the boys at Charlton who say they loved playing there, but found it really difficult. A lot of them rave about our team in the League One season. A lot of them said we were an unbelievable team and so hard to play against, so it’s good to hear from them now, and a lot of people I’ve spoken to love Kenilworth Road and enjoy playing there. “So I’m glad I got to enjoy a few years with the fans there, right behind us. I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.” Neither would we, Shins! OUR TOWN | LUTON TOWN V MILLWALL | 23.02.21 | PAGE 15

MILLWALL

ON THE GOALKEEPER

BARTOSZ BIALKOWSKI Born in Poland, goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski began his professional career with Gornik Zabrze, before signing for Southampton in 2006. He would spend six years with the Saints, making 22 league appearances for the club. The 33-year-old also spent time on loan at Ipswich and Barnsley, before making the permanent move to Notts County.

THE MANAGER

GARY

ROWETT In his playing days, Gary Rowett had spells with a number of clubs, most notably Derby County, Birmingham City, and Burton Albion. As he progressed into management, his first job was at former side Burton Albion, replacing Paul Peschisolido in 2012. After two years with the Brewers, he left for another former club, becoming manager of Birmingham, although hiis time with Blues came to an end after two years, with Gianfranco Zola replacing him. Rowett would later have spells at both Derby County and Stoke City, before becoming manager of Millwall in October 2019.

After two years at Meadow Lane he left for Ipswich, where Bialkowski was first-choice for five years before joining Millwall on loan following Ipswich’s relegation. After spending half of the 2019/20 season at The Den, the move was made permanent in January 2020.

DEFENDER

SHAUN HUTCHINSON Beginning his youth career with Wallsend Boys Club, Shaun Hutchinson came through the youth system in Scotland, playing for Motherwell. He would progress into the first-team at Fir Park, going onto make over 100 league appearances for the Scottish Premiership side. In 2014, he left Motherwell and signed for Fulham on a free transfer. His first season at Craven Cottage saw him make 25 Championship appearances, but after a quiet second season, he was released in 2014 and signed for Millwall. Since his move, he has made over 100 league appearances for the club.

RADAR MIDFIELD

MAIKEL KIEFTENBELD A January transfer window signing, Dutchman Maikel Kieftenbeld began his youth career with Lemelerverd and FC Twente, before eventually coming through the academy at Go Ahead Eagles. The 30-year-old would go onto make 68 league appearances for the Go Ahead Eagles first-team, before making the move to Groningen in 2010. Kieftenbeld spent five years with the club, playing regularly in the Dutch top-flight. England called, and the midfielder left for Birmingham in 2015. He spent five-and-a-half seasons at St Andrew’s, before making the switch to fellow Championship side Millwall in January 2021.

STRIKER

MATT SMITH Beginning his youth career with Cheltenham, Matt Smith was released at 18 and dropped down into Non-League. He had spells at New Mills, Redditch, Droylsden and Solihull Moors, before getting his chance in the Football League with Oldham. His impressive form led to moves up the footballing pyramid, with the 31-year-old going onto sign for the likes of Leeds, Fulham, and Bristol City. Smith also had a two-and-a-half-year spell at QPR, before leaving in 2019. The striker signed for Millwall in July 2019, and scored 13 times in the Championship last season as Millwall finished in eighth position.

KEEP AN EYE ON...

JED

WALLACE With six Championship goals to his name so far this season, midfielder Jed Wallace is Millwall’s top goal scorer in the league so far this season. Wallace began his professional career with Portsmouth, making over 100 league appearances during his time at Fratton Park. He left for Wolves in 2015, but the 26-year-old found it difficult to break into the first-team at Molineux. After two separate loan spells to the club, Wallace joined Millwall on a permanent basis in June 2017. Since his move, he has been a regular at The Den and is a goal threat going forward. Amassing numerous honours, including 51 England caps, he later played for Spurs again, Portsmouth, West Ham and Colchester United before managing Stevenage.

Signing professional at The Den in October 1981, he scored in Millwall’s 1983 Football League Trophy final triumph and was ‘Player of the Year’ in 1985-86, featuring in their rise from the Third Division to First. He also helped them qualify for the Second Division play-offs in 1990-91 and joined Charlton Athletic in May 1993. Following a spell at Bristol City, he returned to Millwall in February 1997 and netted five goals in 343 League games overall for the Lions. He was joint manager with Keith Stevens from May 1999 until September 2000.

England U21 midfielder Andy Roberts helped Millwall reach the 2004 FA Cup final. Signing pro at The Den in October 1991, he starred as Millwall reached the First Division play-offs in 1993-94 and FA Cup fifth round in 1994-95. He joined Crystal Palace in July 1995 and was ‘Player of the Year’ in 1995-96, featuring in two consecutive First Division play-off finals including their 1997 Wembley triumph. Moving to Wimbledon in March 1998, he was loaned to Norwich before rejoining Millwall in August 2002. He netted eight goals in 204 League games overall, since working for his family-run company Go Travel.

PAUL ROBINSON Central defender Paul Robinson was captain and scored the winner in Millwall’s 2010 League One play-off final success. Signing professional at The Den in October 2000, ‘Robbo’ made his League debut in Millwall’s 2-1 win over Preston in November 2002 and was ‘Player of the Year’ in 2007-08. Featuring in the 2009 League One play-off final, he netted 17 goals in 311 League outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2014. He moved to AFC Wimbledon in August 2015 and starred in their 201516 promotion success, then played for Havant & Waterlooville. Now back at Millwall as U-23s assistant-manager.

CLASSIC CLASH 29.08.2005 | LUTON TOWN 2 MILLWALL 1 CHAMPIONSHIP

CLUB HISTORIAN ROGER WASH DELVES INTO HIS ARCHIVES...

The Town’s first season back in the Championship since 1996 had started pretty well with wins against recently relegated Crystal Palace and Southampton followed by a 2-0 victory at Leicester two days before this Bank Holiday clash with Millwall at Kenilworth Road.. The noon kick-off saw Warren Feeney open the

scoring on 12 minutes before the Lions levelled just after the break. It was left to central defender Curtis Davies to sweep home a deserved winner, being first to react to a Kevin Nicholls free-kick, on 78 minutes. Shortly afterwards Davies moved to West Brom for £3 million but he left the Hatters in good shape in third spot. Pictured is Davies netting the winner.

By club historian Roger Wash The latest addition to the Hatters’ Heritage website is the glorious League One championship winning season of 2004-05. Match reports for every game, match action photos and complete programmes are included from that epic campaign – have a look on www.hattersheritage.co.uk In turn, we aim to run a series throughout the season showcasing artefacts and memorabilia in our collection reflecting the club’s rich history. Today we feature a back page from the Sunday Graphic from April 1933 with caricatures of the players and officials of the time which are remarkably good impressions. THE CAMERA NEVER LIES

Back in the mid-1980s the Kenilworth Road crowd was treated before the match and at halftime to the Luton Strikers who were choreographed by Julia Farestvedt. They also formed a guard of honour as the teams came out. ‘Jump to your Love’ by the Pointer Sisters was a regular routine so I am reliably reminded! ROGER WASH

THE PRESS BOX

BBC Three Counties Radio commentator SIMON OXLEY gives his view I was delighted by the response to my videos on Twitter for the recent home game with Huddersfield. It was my first live game for a month, and I had been missing it terribly especially after a covid-enforced lay-off over Christmas.

E M O C N O U YO TERS T A It struck me that if I was missing it so much after a month, how must many of you have been feeling after nearly a year. The film of the walk up from Hazelbury Crescent, into the ground, and up the stairs to the back of the main stand, and into the stadium obviously struck a chord with thousands of you, so I’m glad I did it.

Before that game I had been commentating off a screen for the trips to Bournemouth, Chelsea and Blackburn. This is due to the travel restrictions on BBC local radio sport as part of the latest national lockdown. We use TV pictures or the iFollow service in order to meet our commitment to provide commentary on every game, every week. Many of you will have noticed that similar travel restrictions are not being applied by other broadcasters or media outlets, and indeed by other parts of the BBC. It would also be fair to say that among local radio colleagues it is not universally

popular as we strive to bring you as true a representation as possible of what you are missing. But there is a bigger picture here.

Games though are soulless affairs, despite the best vocal efforts of messrs Jones and Harford. Cardiff here last Tuesday and tonight against Millwall would normally be “noisy” occasions, and whilst with headphones on and delivering a commentary you can get lost in the moment, it remains a strange experience.

Even the press seats were largely empty last week. Cardiff at home usually means English and Welsh-speaking commentary teams from BBC Wales, but of course they were at home. But at least we, the media, can attend games. Might there be a chance of another 2,000 attendance before the end of the season? Maybe, but it might be the start of next season. If you do have to wait until then to return, I think it will be to see Championship football. There is a marked improvement from last season, and at the risk of tempting fate I really don’t see an anxious run-in.

LUTON TOWN COMMUNITY TRUST UNDER 18 EDUCATION & BOYS FOOTBALL PATHWAY BTEC Sport + full-time training and games in the EFL CEEFA League We’re opening up our recruitment process for our BTEC programme this week but due to the current lockdown restrictions we have moved our application process online for the time being. We hope that after Easter we will be able to hold face to face football trials and interviews as normal. In the meantime, year 11 leavers should initially go to our website to begin applying for a place: www.lutontowncommunity.co.uk/ bteceliteacademy The programme is spread across three sites, with education at the Chalk Hills Sixth Form, games and training at our Ely Way Training Ground and practical gym and swim sessions at Active Luton’s Lewsey Sports Village. There will be four blocks of classroom work, four blocks of football training including games every Wednesday

against other EFL Clubs and two blocks at Lewsey Sports Centre. Each block represents a morning or afternoon. The elite boys' programme is designed for those Yr 11 leavers who want to take a sports qualification whilst receiving a fulltime football training programme. Additional GCSE support is available in Maths and English. Football training sessions and gym sessions will work around your study on a full-time daily basis with our full-time Luton Town FC coaching staff from the Trust. This gives players the opportunity to progress into the professional or semi-professional game, as well as preparing them to move onto university or USA Scholarships. The scheme is open to students who are Year 11 leavers from September 2021. If you are a Year 11 leaver and wonder - Is this for me? Then if you meet one of the following this course could be for you: •I have played a good standard of competitive football •I am keen to study sport and achieve a qualification •I want to start a career in football, sport or leisure management •I want to continue my education blending football & sport.’ You can follow us on Instagram at lutontownbtec or visit our website for further information or to apply for a place at www.lutontowncommunity.co.uk/bteceliteacademy

Manager Nathan Jones was disappointed his side couldn’t build on their first-half dominance against Huddersfield Town last week. Back at Kenilworth Road for only the second time this calendar year, James Collins had given the Hatters a fantastic start early on but Naby Sarr equalised for the Terriers in the second half, condemning the Hatters to a frustrating draw. "The level of performance I was pretty satisfied with,” the gaffer insisted. “We just needed that second goal. First half I thought we were excellent, we had a number of opportunities, Potts’ chance I think is point-blank, got to score. “He’s got up brilliantly, won the header and you think it’s in everyone on our bench did. I think that would have been the cushion we needed because I thought we were in real control.

and they did. They didn’t have anything clear-cut apart from the counter attack late on and I still felt we were a threat as well. “Overall, we have had enough chances and enough opportunities to have taken three points and I’m a little bit disappointed that we didn’t. I thought we were a threat especially from crosses, just disappointed we didn’t get the second goal.” LT

Manager Nathan Jones pulled no punches in his reaction to the disappointing 3-0 loss against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon. The Hatters fell to a second defeat in a row and dropped down to 16th place in the Championship table as a result of the performance at the Bet365 Stadium.

looked weak. Not weak physically, but in their desire. I’m really surprised and I’m bitterly disappointed on every level. “We haven’t done the basics right in both games (Cardiff and Stoke), we really haven’t, and if we don’t do the basics right then we are in trouble because we have to do those right.”

“I’m bitterly disappointed," Jones began. “I thought we were inept in every single department today. We lost every individual battle, we showed no fight, no spirit or desire to win the game.

LAST SEASON: 16TH IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP TWITTER: @SWFC COLOURS: BLUE & WHITE SHIRT, BLACK SHORTS GROUND: HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM

Sheffield Wednesday were founded in 1867 and have spent the last 8 seasons competing in the Sky Bet Championship after winning automatic promotion from League One in 2012. Despite not finishing in the top half of the table for the past 3 seasons, the Owls finished in the Championship play-offs in consecutive seasons from 2015-17. Wednesday are three-time FA Cup winners and four-time First Division champions, all of which were won from 1895-1930.

GROUND?

Wednesday’s home ground currently boasts a capacity of 39,732, with a record crowd of 72,841 in 1934 for their FA Cup Quarter-Final tie with Manchester City. Before the halting of the season due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Wednesday posted an average attendance of 18,573 last season, their lowest since the 2010/11 season after relegation from the Championship.

The two sides last met at Hillsborough where Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu’s 74th-minute strike gave the Hatters a well-earned point on the road after the Owls went down to ten men. Last season at Kenilworth Road, James Collins gave the Hatters another 1-0 win over their Yorkshire based opponents, with Wednesday earning all three points by the same scoreline at Hillsborough.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Former Hatter Drew Talbot joined the Hatters from Wednesday in 2007, going on to make 51 appearances for Luton across three seasons. Having played 173 times for Luton in a six-year spell at the club, midfielder Scott Oakes signed for the Owls in 1996 but only made seven starts in four years in an injury-hit spell at Hillsborough. HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.
