Holiday

Memories •My favorite Holiday memory is how my family spends Christmas Eve. Every year we all meet at Aunt Jackie's house in PJ's ready for her famous Spaghetti. After dinner we all head to the family room to drink coco and sing Christmas carols that most of us don't know all the words too, lol.

Nora Bonds My favorite holiday memory is getting in our pajamas the night before Christmas, and making hot cocoa, listening to Christmas music, and driving around looking at Christmas lights. It’s a tradition with my girls and I since they were tiny and we still do it.

Renee Gonzalez

My favorite winter memory, my favorite winter memory was having my cousins and aunt and uncle come over Christmas eve and having the whole family in their pajamas making a huge dinner to eat while we play some type of game. We are a very loud family so when we play the games, it becomes so chaotic, but I love it. It makes me so happy to see everyone relaxed and able to enjoy the little things. I always look forward to it and it is even more fun when my dad has a few drinks because he basically makes his own rules after a while and we just watch it all unfold.

Glam

Holiday Ready! by: Rene Gonzales The holidays are my favorite time of year. With all the traditions, seeing friends and family, holiday parties, and winter fashion. If you’re like me then it’s that one time of the year your inner diva can shine bright. Calling all things that sparkle. The newest eyeshadow palettes are glam to the max. With glitter and shimmer. So, it’s not a matter of if you’ll sparkle but, more of how much you want to! Eye Kandy Cosmetics came out with the perfect glitter eyeliner kit. Two separate glitters. And the glitter liquid adhesive. My pro tip would be to do your eyes first before foundations and concealers when working with glitters. That way if you have any fall out it’s easy to clean up. Typically, with Eye Kandy’s adhesive this doesn’t happen. I also recommend using a synthetic eyeliner brush verses a real hair brush for this. You can still glide right across your lid just like any eyeliner you just have to work quickly before the adhesive dries. This special glitter and adhesive will last all night long without falling all over your face. It’s the same glitter as used on the tv show, “Dancing with the stars.” So, you know the quality is good. The stars can’t have glitter falling in their eyes while they do their winning dance moves. For eyeshadows, I recommend MAC’s holiday eyeshadow pallet for the best value. You get 9 colors in their Smokey pallet for 29.50 plus a brush. This set has Browns and Golds, to emerald, and sapphire blue, to coal black. So, you can create a variety of glam looks. To get the most intense color pay off I recommend using an eyeshadow primer first with a firm brush for placement.

Next, I recommend using a clean fluffy brush to blend. Another great trick for liquid liner is to put tape on the ends of your eye angled. Do the same on each side. This will ensure you have matching winged liner. Just make sure you have dry skin when apply the tape and that you let it dry completely before removing the tape. For lips it’s all about the perfect red for the holidays. I recommend Dior ‘s original red lipstick 999. It comes in a variety of textures such as long wear, matte, rouge, and extra shine. As well as MAC’s Ruby woo. Make sure to line your lips when applying red lipstick so you have that perfect looking red lip. For red lips I don’t usually recommend any gloss as it tends to make a big mess and transfers easily. If a red lip is too bold for you then I recommend going with a nude lip. Again, make sure you line your lips for a nude lip. That way your lips don’t disappear or fade into your face. Some great tips for the perfect nude lip are 1 to 2 shades lighter than your actual lip color. You can also do one shade deeper. Just depending on your preference. For a nude lip I recommend using a lip gloss. This helps to showcase your lip shape so much better. JLo taught us this back in the day! Finally, make sure before you start your glam look that your skin is hydrated properly so that way your make up can look it’s best. Using collagen face masks once a week or hyaluronic acid serum will ensure your skin stays protected and hydrated in this cold weather. Happy Holidays and I hope you all have a happy and safe new year! Xo From your makeup guru and celebrity artist Rene Gonzales

Hair Revolution by: Pamela Wood When a community evolves into its true self by way of knowledge of their oppressor and knowledge of self, revolution takes place. What is revolution? Tukufu Kalonji, radio personality and re-entry advocate out of San Diego, California defines revolution as a manifestation of radical change in the interest of the revolutionary. After our slumber during the the 2016 Presidential Election, we are wide awake, about the business of revolution, and ready to do battle. So much so that there has been controversy regarding black women wearing their natural hair in an international scale. The Black community is fighting its battles with knowledge of self, higher education, learning and understanding local, state and federal legislation and voting in every election that applies to us. We have won several! We are raising more esteemed children through the comeback of Black family values and structure. We are exercising our right to peaceful protest and using our freedom of the press and speech, rights. We have open dialogue about the racist behavior and oppressive actions of the current president. Revolution is not only reflected in the community’s narrative it is also manifested in the appearance of the community’s members. We are being spoon fed the history of the African on and off of American soil through social media picture, video, and article posts. These posts leave us thirsting for more of us. The images in this article are of beautiful melanated human beings, strong in stature, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Their hair defies gravity by standing at a 90 degree angle without any help from a single product, and their melanin absorbs sunlight like it’s water to earth. The braids, cornrows, locks, afros, fades, and naturals that these kings and queens rock are beyond fabulous and have been significant in our struggle and progress in America since we were kidnapped to this strange land.

Ashley Walker “Never be afraid to shoot your shot while walking beyond the standard for your goals and dreams” -MsBeYouDoYou

1.

What made you decide to become a model?

I decided to become a model after taking a few pictures for a friend’s online store, The Dream World in Fashion in Beaumont Texas, which sparked interest in others with the thought of my already being a working model. This led me to actually seek career stardom to work to empower and encourage others to love themselves enough to live life on their terms through my modeling.

2. Do you feel we need to remove the word “Plus” from Plus Model and just be known as models? I believe we absolutely need to drop the word “plus” from Plus Model, because we are all models no matter the area or capacity in the industry in which we work. We are working for complete inclusivity and model diversity, so keeping “plus” only encourages the separation.

1. What made you decide to become a model?

This led me to actually seek career stardom to work to empower and encourage others to love themselves enough to live life on their terms through my modeling.

2. Do you feel we need to remove the word “Plus” from Plus Model and just be known as models? I believe we absolutely need to drop the word “plus” from Plus Model, because we are all models no matter the area or capacity in the industry in which we work. We are working for complete inclusivity and model diversity, so keeping “plus” only encourages the separation.

3. What are your views or thoughts about the current state of the plus size industry?

I feel the current state of the plus size industry is one in need of transition right along with the working parts of the industry. I believe that the Trail Blazers that paved the way for us to do what we do today started it all and are solely responsible for our voice today, but we must continue running with that torch. Within the community we push for diversity and cry out for inclusivity, yet so many in the plus industry still try to fit men and women into a box. How do we push for inclusivity when true representation of all bodies is still lacking? The plus industry in many ways acts just as other parts of the industry when they reject a professional and prepared, individual willing to give their all just because they don’t fit within a standard, wouldn’t we call that a bit hypocritical? So, yes I am happy for all of the strides we see with more plus visibility today, but understanding that we still have so far to go is always at the forefront of all that I do. I have willingly accepted the charge and part of the responsibility to continue pushing for complete inclusivity, representation, and true model diversity across the industry.

4. Do you feel the society accepts kurvy women?

I absolutely feel that society accepts Kurvy women, but still on certain terms which is very comical to me seeing as though the average female in this country is a size 14-16. Society still wants us kept in a certain box and only to carry ourselves according to the stereotype within that box, and this is why the movement of acceptance and redefining beauty is still so strong and necessary today.

5. What is the one thing you would tell a young girl looking in the mirror who is having a hard time loving her kurves?

To the young girl looking in the mirror having trouble loving her kurves I would say, Babygirl you are beautifully made and there is only one you that was intentionally created by God without fear of you being any less amazing then He intended. You are not your kurves, but your kurves are an amazing part of you, so love them just as they are. It’s okay to want to change things about ourselves, but loving yourself completely right now will allow you to embrace change for “you” and you alone. This is your life.....live you and be you. This is how MsBeYouDoYou was born!!! I came to grips with the fact that no one can beat me at being me. I wanted to help others to be them and do them!!! So to all my beautiful young ladies, “Be You and Do You!” Live a life that you love that’s pleasing and rewarding just for you!!!!!!

6. What is your favorite holiday memory?

My favorite holiday memory was Xmas 2015 when I first bought my home and all of my family came to celebrate with us. It was a joyous occasion filled with love and genuine happiness for the growth and success reached. I am a person that goes all out for holiday decor both inside and out, so I was particularly excited for everyone to see the extent I went to for every detail to come together for this occasion. It was a great Christmas.

7. 2019 is just weeks away! Why are you looking forward to the new year?

I am looking forward to the new year, because of the growth I have witnessed within myself during 2018 and the goals I’ve set for 2019. I was able to reach every goal I set for myself this year with gracing a cover of a magazine being the only goal left for the year, and because of Luxe Kurves I have been fortunate to fulfill that as well. With a move to Atlanta this Summer, my 2019 possibilities are endless, so to say I’m excited about the new year is probably an understatement.

“It’s never too late to learn how to live”

What are your views or thoughts about the plus size industry? I feel like the industry has came a long way within the last ten years. We have a lot more clothing options. And so many beautiful bold and confident women all over, have come out of the shadows ready for the world to see them. I’m happy to be one of them! What do you think we need to do more of to have more kurvy women represented in media? Pushing the kurvy and plus community to the forefront, will leave media with no option but to provide more opportunity with less size restrictions. Who is your favorite designer? Dolce and Gabbana How will you leave your legacy? Be you because nobody can do you better than you can. Your age should never determine how good you are, Beauty has no age limit. Never give up on your dreams, follow them hole heartedly. Know that you are amazing, and that you can do anything. Love the skin you are in Remove all negative thoughts and positive will come to you. What is your meaning of a “Luxe Beautie?” Unique women that’s has confidence out of this world. A women who can stand alone and also stand out in a crowd.

1. What made you decide that being a model is what you wanted to do? Honestly, I never knew or thought that being a model was an option for me. Once I researched and dedicated my time to becoming a plus model, blessings just started pouring down. I eventually decided to move to New York 3 years ago to go full throttle and to see what opportunities may come my way. Thankfully I made that move, because I wouldn’t be here today. 2. Being a model in the plus size industry what is one thing you want young girls to know when they see your images? I want young girls to not look at my image thinking that they’re not worth it, or beautiful enough to be a model. I remember clear as day looking at models when I was younger thinking that I would never be in that position. So I want young girls looking at my image to feel empowered and beautiful. I would never want any girl thinking that she’s not enough, because they are!

“I want young girls to not look at my image thinking that they’re not worth it, or beautiful enough to be a model. .” -Porsha Law

3. When did you fall in love with fashion? I remember I fell in love with fashion at such a young age. I was probably 12 years old, and my mom would subscribe to Seventeen Magazine for me so I could look at all the new trends. I’m a country girl, so we never had all the huge popular stores in my town. However, I swear I would still try my best to mix and match my clothes just to copy trends from that magazine. I been in love ever since!. 4. What is your favorite fashion trend? Right now, my favorite fashion trend is animal print! I never really liked animal print in the past. Now, there are a few dresses this season that I love and I will be purchasing. I’m definitely here for animal print! 5. Share with the readers one of your beauty secrets? My beauty secret that I use faithfully is my Peter Thomas Sulfur Mask. This product keeps my skin clear and glowing and I only use it when it’s needed. Other than that drink water, it saves! 6. What do you love about the holiday season? I love the holiday season because it always reminds me of my childhood and how blessed I was to be surrounded by family and friends. My mother always made Christmas so magical for me, this is why I feel so attached to this season. The feeling in the air this time of year is the most beautiful feeling in the world to me. I hope when I have kids I can recreate the same magic that my mom created for me  7. What is next for you? I will continue my fabulous career as a plus model of course! I also hope to get my project called “Backpacks for Kids in New York” up and running in 2019. I am also doing a few film projects hopefully making my debut as an actress, so stay tuned!

Taylo Swift

Luxe Artist of the Year by: Lily Nussbaum

Our culture is rapidly changing, the media’s involvement in everyday life continues to grow and more than ever, the younger generations is fighting to make their voices heard. Artists are constantly pushing boundaries and using their platform to encourage cultural growth. The artist of the year is someone who has not only achieved great success this past year, but also someone who is an example of the artist previously described. This year alone, Taylor Swift has completely dominated the charts and the award shows. Not only has she shaped the music world, but also has inspired millions through her platform. Before Reputation, it had been three years since Taylor Swift had released a studio album. Full of drama, love stories and catchy songs, the album was quickly a hit. Swift’s personal life has never been a secret. Most of her relationships and her social life have been covered by the media. The whole basis of the album was to prove there’s more to Swift than what the media has played her off to be. In each of her songs, Swift moves away from her traditional style and into one that is bolder and fiercer. The album addresses many ongoing feuds, but also both past and new loves. Swift embarked on her “Reputation” tour earlier this year. The tour had fifty-three total stops in the North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. With her mesmerizing stage presence, impressive artistry, and killer stage setup, Swift left fans demanding more. One big part that many loved about the tour was her confidence. While showing confidence, Swift was also not afraid to be vulnerable. During a show in Arizona, Swift shared, “I learned a really important lesson that I’ve been telling you from the stage for about 10 years, but I never had to learn it so harshly, myself and that lesson has to do with how much you value your reputation. And I think that the lesson is that you shouldn’t care so much if you feel misunderstood by a lot of people who don’t know you, as long as you feel understood by the people who do know you.” One of the reasons she was chosen as artist of the year is because of these moments. If her tour and album have taught fans anything, it’s to be confident in who you are and to not worry about the opinions of others. In response to the album and tour, Swift has won a plethora of awards. Most notably she has won Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock, Female Artist Favorite Pop/Rock Album and Tour of the Year at the American Music Awards. She also won Top Female Artist and Top Selling Album at the Billboard Music Awards. Along with her musical triumphs this year, the pop star broke her political silence to voice her support for Tennessee’s Democratic candidate for Senate. Although he would end up losing, Swift’s declaration of her political views inspired many to examine their own and increased the number of people registered to vote. Taylor’s year was a big one. Filled with multiple awards, a very successful tour and a declaration of self confidence, Taylor is fully deserving of Luxe’s 2018 Artist of the Year.

TIPS TO NOT PLACE YOURSELF IN DEBT by: ESENDRA O 2019 2019 is here and one way to get ready is to get your financial house in order with our easy tips!!!

1) Avoid The Temptation Of Buy Now, Pay Later: Such buy now, pay later or other interest-free financing schemes might seem appealing on the face of it. However, in truth, such schemes merely postpone debt. To efficiently manage your finances, buy within your means.

2) Learn To Turn Down The Sales Person And Yourself Sometimes: Working within this tip simply means working with a budget. Draw out your intended cash expenditure on any spending venture and stick to it. Learn to say no to the salesperson and unnecessary wants sometimes no matter how tempting it may be.

3)

Save Up Money And Pay Yourself:

Staying out of debt works hand in hand with saving your money. Paying yourself involves investing. That said. To be well on your way, save up a percentage of your income till it grows into something substantial and duly invest it in a venture that is sure to yield profit. With increased wealth and the right approach to your finances, avoiding debt would come easily.

4)

Avoid Eating Out:

One thing is sure, eating out attracts a lot of unnecessary expenses. On the other hand, deciding to treat yourself to some home-cooked meals or brown bagging your meals saves you some cash which can be used for more important things. With reduced expenses debt would be out the door.

5)

Pay With Cash Whenever You Can:

Yes, yes, we do live in a cashless society. However, carrying physical cash around saves you from impulse spending as opposed to having your credit card or banks mobile application with you. The reality is, if you don’t have the cash with you, and the purchase is not important, you can just walk away.

I’m a fitness enthusiast. Raised in Brooklyn, New York. Cowboys fan. My passions are cooking, modeling and youth mentoring. 2. When you were diagnosed with cancer, what was your first thought? How did you stay mind strong through the process? Since I was already battling Crohn’s disease, I knew that this was going to be yet another obstacle for me to overcome. I relied heavily on my support system to help me through that difficult time. The combination of my faith in Jesus Christ, the support of my friends and family, and the consistency of exercise and healthy eating gave me hope that I could defeat this awful disease 3. Beating cancer is one of your lives biggest achievements, what advice would you give to someone who was in your position?

“I just want everyoe to be the best versions of themselves

- Eric Brisbane

Model and Colon Cacer Survivor

My advice for everyone battling cancer and any other disease as well as experiencing adversity, I would tell them to direct their focus towards a positive outcome. Put your faith in whatever you feel will get you through hard times because each fight is a step closer to survival. 4. What do you want your legacy to be as a man? The well-known saying “Not everyday is promised” is so true. Being able to wake up everyday and continue to fulfill my purpose in life, which is to inspire others to practice a healthy lifestyle is such a blessing. Being a positive example to my peers, especially the youth, is my ultimate goal. 5. How would you describe your fashion style? I prefer not to define my fashion style as a certain “type.” Fashion is about feeling confident and comfortable with what you put on your body. One day I may have on a fitted suit and the next day you might catch me in a more “athleisure” outfit, wearing jogger pants and a t-shirt. It just all depends on how I’m feeling on that particular day. 6. What are your thoughts and views about kurvy women? I love that society is embracing a more kurvy and realistic body type. Sexy comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s about confidence and having that glow that sets you apart from all others. 7. What makes a woman attractive to you? Attractive woman: There’s nothing more attractive than a woman with a strong mind. When her genuine spirit from within shines on the outside, that’s an attribute I find most enticing. .

I have always been passionate about the fashion and modeling industry and my love for the business has lead me to work with some of the best designers, agencies, fashion coordinators, producers, photographers, local musical artists, and brands from the Washington, D.C. and New York area who are as passionate about their craft as I am.. As much as I enjoy my work, I pride myself in staying humble and accepting that failure is all part of the success and the critique is all part of the growth because the focus is to keep growing. I am a man who feels everything from the heart, therefore everything I do and give is from the heart. My handle “AdmirerGQ” derives from 2 things that are important to me. ‘Admirer’ stands for my admiration for women (strong women to be exact), and ‘GQ’ is my love for fashion. 2. Pop Culture Guilty Pleasure? Well, I don’t have cable so I’m pretty sure I’m missing out on some hot discussions. But as far as TV, there have been only a few shows that have kept my attention. Years ago it was “24” on FOX. And now it’s “Power” and “Insecure” when I have the time to catch it online. Other than that, some may say I have issues because I eat, sleep, and breathe all things financial… mostly from YouTube

“University”. From webinars and training materials on getting out of debt, building wealth, investment properties, etc. I have over 14 accounts between investment vehicles, bank products, and whole life insurance and on a weekly basis I’m always repositioning it, updating and making changes as needed. Why? Let’s just say everything “they” taught us or advertized/push as important has been a lie. As a people we seriously have to question everything we’re told. Even as simply as go to school and get a job, we should question it instead of just doing it. 3. Traits in a woman that you crave? I love the type of mental strength women has. The multiple degrees getting; while working a full time job; while still taking care of her home. Geez that’s a lot for one woman and it’s kind of sad. It makes you wonder… if she’s doing all of this, who’s doing what for her? And that’s where (dare I say) a real man steps in. Because those types of men will never sit back leaving it all on her to do. I love a woman who’s open-minded, who will try anything at least twice lol. You know… if its food maybe it wasn’t prepared right, so you got to go elsewhere and try it again. I love a woman who’s truly happy with herself. That way she’s not looking for someone to give her happiness. Being with someone will only add to her happiness. I love a girlygirl. And I’m not talking always a dress and make-up. I’m talking FEMININITY that shows even when she’s in a big sweatshirt, sitting on the couch, hair pulled back in a ponytail (oh I love ponytail on women). Most of all, I love simple beauty. It just doesn’t require much when she’s simply beautiful. I saw a his/her shirts that said “I like his beard / I like her butt”. But I’m going to revise that and make mine say “I Love his BEARD / I Love her MIND”. 4. When a woman does this, it turns me on? A woman that speaks her mind and is passionate about what she believes in does it for me. Whether I agree with her or not, it’s good to know where she stands and how she sees things. In a world filled with so many assumptions that leads to the breakdown in communication, it’s best to be direct and articulate what you want than just going along for a ride. I love honesty in a woman. Even if it hurts at least you now know and can decide what’s best for you. An awesome quote that comes to mind… “RESPECT is earned! HONESTY is appreciated! TRUST is gained! LOYALTY is returned!” Auliq- Ice

Being established and getting to a place mentally where you can be a provider. Not saying you will never fall or need her help at times but when it gets tough knowing as a man you are in control rather it controlling you is a must. Being at a place where you’re ready to guide and teach her a few things, but also willing and open to learn from her as well. Everyone has a moment in their life where that light goes off (or more like on) in your head. That moment when the path to success hits you and you realize you just landed the secret code to being successful. In my case figuring out a financial tool to becoming debt free was my light bulb moment. Let’s face it, we’re all striving to be successful in whatever we do and live a fulfilling life. Though it won’t be absolutely headache free, having discipline and patient is required. I’m still single now but can’t wait to find her then look her in the eyes and say… Hey Luv I got this! “Drinks is on the house” and then some. 7. Superpower you would like to have? To Live Forever! I LOVE life so much that I wish it didn’t end as we know it. Of course life has its ups and downs but in everything balance has to exist so I welcome it. Being down today doesn’t mean you won’t be up tomorrow. You just have to set your mind on “This Too Shall Pass”, knowing that God isn’t punishing you… it’s just life happening. Growing each day and most importantly learning so much excites me that I want it forever. So my plan is exactly that… To Live Forever!

Healthy Holiday Recipes by: Rachel Stewart The winter holiday season is one of the most magical times of the year. There are celebrations galore, plenty of festive clothes, beautiful decorations, and delicious food! Here are some healthy holiday recipes that will give you your winter fix without overdosing your body on sugar. 1) Peppermint mocha: Brew yourself some fresh coffee, take peppermint extract and add a few drops to your brewed coffee, take about 1 tbs of unsweetened cocoa powder and add it to your cup of coffee and peppermint oil, add some milk of your choice and stevia, mix it all together, and you have a winter wonderland in a mug. 2) Cranberry oatmeal: I am always in a hurry, but don’t want to sacrifice nourishing my body because I don’t have time. This recipe has been my go to since pre-Thanksgiving and it tastes so good! Take a half a cup of oats, 1 cup of water, a handful of fresh cranberries, a sliced banana, a dash of cinnamon, and a bit of stevia, put it in a microwave safe bowl or mug and microwave it on high for 2 and a half minutes. Once you’re done with that, mix it all together, and top with 2 tbs of cacao nibs (You can buy a bag at Trader Joes for $2). 3) Hot chocolate yummy yummy: This recipe is sooooo simple. Take 2 tbs of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 cups of almond milk, about 4 packets of stevia, a dash of cinnamon, mix it all together and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Literally the healthiest and quickest cup of hot cocoa ever, but it still tastes amazing! 4) Sugar cookie bliss: Take 1 cup of unbleached flour, one mashed up banana, 2 eggs, a half cup of coconut oil, about a half cup of stevia, 1 tsp nutmeg and mix it all together. Form your cookies and put them in a baking pan. Put them in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees or until golden brown, and now you have a healthy treat even Santa will love!
