FASHION&TECH An Exclusive Interview with Fashion Mogul
MARISA KENSON INTERVIEW BY: CANDICE BAR
Q.what is your company and
what does your company do?
A. The company’s name is Social
Scenes, Inc. and our platform is Shop Social Scenes. Basically, we have replicated the ability to plant stores that chain stores used to do in neighborhoods, except we now use technology and the internet and plant them in the internet in cyberhoods. We utilize the ecosystem of technology and businesses. The internet has really forced all of us to work in ecosystems to utilize the best assets of the internet. We have to work in small groups to connect. We need to connect connectors to connectors, it’s really the only way it works. To give you an analogy, it’s almost like when the world opened up by having jet airplanes so you could have access to any landing space any country in the world but you actually had to get on that plane, buy a ticket, and get on the plane to go to that country. That’s the same thing with the internet. The access is there, but you have to have a path to actually connect it globally. The only way you can do it is through ecosystems, and they all connect together because obviously you’ve got to get on that jet plane and pay for that ticket.
If you are a mom and pop entrepreneur, or you have your own e commerce site, your own e commerce internet business, and everybody does these days, you have to spend a tremendous amount of money to get that jet plane to reach everybody in the world through digital marketing.
If you work eco systems, each ecosystem spawns another, and that’s basically the premise of what Social Scenes is built on,. Eco systems manned by influencers, charities, customers and affinity groups that all connect.
Q.What made you think of this business?
A.
It’s a solutions provider for the business that I’ve been in forever that is also my area of expertise, which is apparel manufacturing, distribution and retail. This is something I’ve done for the past 30 years. In 2008, we literally lost 60% of our mom and pop boutiques all across the country, because of the banking crisis. It really hurt everybody. We only had the large chain stores to depend on. These larger chain stores however, never made the switch to the internet, and that’s why there’s so many stores that are closing. Just today, February 20 there’s a big article that Victoria’s Secret is closing down and going private because they’re in bankruptcy. These are the signs of the time so we set out to put forth the same success of brick and mortar stores and distribution into the internet. That’s the technology that we built.
“We are a solutions provider for the business that I’ve been in forever that is also my area of expertise, which is apparel manufacturing, distribution and retail. This is something I’ve done for the past 30 years.”
Q.In
buidling a business, especially a tech company or tech business, what are some challenges that you’ve come across that you had to overcome?
A.Well, it’s really the percep-
tion of being a tech business so first of all you have to just to step back and understand what tech means in the marketplace, and what it actually does. Every company, if you’re a living breathing business today a tech company. You have to have technical attributes to be able to compete. You have to separate the two. We do say we are a tech company and we actually have taken it further because all of our value is in our ability to replicate and scale thousands of stores. However, we had to separate the wants and needs of a true retail business and the wants and needs of the customers. The ability to map these features and track it comes from both practical expertise from our team and technology that executes the features. When you can combine practical experience with technical application, that’s when you have a winner. A lot of tech companies just focus on tech widgets that enhance things, and it’s based on user applications and clicks etc. Our business is based on practical application with the tech build to execute our vision. When you have that kind of combination I think that’s when you can reall,y maintain the longevity of your business and the vision.
Q.Being a female in busi-
ness or a female entrepreneur, what challenges have you come across while building your business in the beginning or even at this stage?
A.Well, I look at it this way,
if you have predetermined set backs then you’re already in a negative mindset. I always lead with the mindset that it doesn’t really matter. If you provide that other individual or other company with a value
proposition they cannot ignore, it doesn’t really matter. If you can prove it, that’s all that matters to them because businesses want value, they want partners that contribute. That’s where you have to work harder than anyone else. Any entrepreneur, needs to ask themselves, “how are you creating value for anyone that is doing business with you?”. That has to be the number one intention and that’s why when we work with influencers and marketing companies, we ask ourselves, “how can we bring value to their company or client?”
Q.What excites you and gets
you out of bed in the morning that makes you move forward in a positive way?
A. I think the answer to that differs
with different seasons of your, your business. I look at any person’s business cycle in three specific areas. The first season is wow, you’re just willing to do anything your and you’re wanting to make things happen. You’ve got the energy when you’re younger to make things happen. The second thing is you’re reaping the benefits of a huge success. You are you know what’s making you happy as you know you’ve got the monetary value coming in. The third season is you’re saying okay I’ve gotten all of that and I’ve had all those exciting things happen to me in my youth. I’ve made the money, I’ve had the million dollar houses and the third one is really satisfaction.
Q.While you were building this platform, what was a major win for you?
A.
Wow, that is like basically asking to identify “THE MIRACLE MOMENT”, and that really doesn’t happen. My advice to entrepreneurs is that if you are waiting for that one day where you open your doors, or you get on your laptop and “Wow the deal of the century is there!”, it really doesn’t happen that way. If they put their mindset to that, they are going to be very disappointed and they will get let down. Everyday you have to look at the little wins. You have to look at every little win as a big win for that day. That’s what is really really important, because if you are a valid company with a valid solution and valid value, it will be built brick by brick and there’s no other way. No one is going to bring you a ton of bricks, all at one time. Now in the future, once you’re up and running, you will have those big deals but it’ll be common. It will be like “Oh it’s another big deal” because that’s where you’ll be at. Every day you have to look for a win, even if it’s small.
What are you doing that’s going to leave a legacy that touches even one person? Every time we make a connection and set up a new site it’s exciting for me, because we’re helping people and our technology is. I’ll probably have meetings in my wheelchair, you know the the entrepreneurial spirit, and I’ll be calling you Candice. Right now, it’s like, wow, you know, this is so amazing that large companies are wanting to work with us and validating that we’re doing something good. Charities are wanting to work with us, influencers are wanting to work with their site. What’s great for me is just the validation that our system works, it’s needed and it’s helping people.
Even with a billion dollars they don’t know what they have. I’ve talked to too many of them that have had this conversation, so I always try to keep that in mind. When you can claim that you’ve had that kind of success, it allows you to work from a position of strength.
Q.What is your definition A.Well
It comes from responsibility. That’s something that people don’t teach their children. I hate to sound like the whole snowflake thing, but honestly, you’re not helping your children and you’re not helping the next generation if you do not teach them responsibility. If you really want them to have responsibility you have to be willing to let them fall down, and it’s hard to do. My kids will tell you that I let them do that because that’s how I learned. If they didnt have that environement they’re going to be looking for somebody else or looking for a handout or excuse. You have to be able to let them fall and understand responsibility.
of success?
the definition of success has always been the same to me, and I think that I did address this way back when I was your first interview on Luxe Life. Success for anybody is freedom. Freedom to live your life the way you want to live it to have the means to live it that way, and have the ability to help other people. When success comes in, you’re able to do that. It doesn’t have to be a billion dollars, it has to be to a level that you can actually experience. People don’t realize that you can experience success if you’re making 100 grand a year. If you have carved out that ability to have that kind of freedom and that mindset, you have success because that’s what people work towards. I know billionaires that don’t have that kind of freedom in their mind. They don’t have that freedom to really be able to execute the purpose of their life.
Q.Do you think or be-
lieve that entrepreneurs are born or can be trained into being an entrepreneur?
Q.Where did you get your A.
work ethic from?
Well, that is difficult to pinpoint, your work ethic has to come from making sure you get results, and understanding that you cannot depend on anyone else. Even when you hire people, if a job is not being done properly, you have to step in and then you need to train somebody to do it the right way, or find another person.
A.I think it’s both. However,
I would not say trained. I’d say that you either have this affinity of your personality to persevere, and it gets you excited and you are brought up with confidence, or you’ve witnessed it, experienced such dire circumstances that you’ve had to take care of yourself to make something happen out of nothing. You cannot train an entrepreneur, that’s my belief.
“Your work ethic has to come from making sure you get results, and understanding that you cannot depend on anyone else.”
Q.What legacy would you like to
A.Wow,
leave behind?
those are really great questions and very insightful. It takes a lot of thought. The first and foremost is a legacy business. For example, we determine our platform as a legacy platform. What that means is a legacy does not go away. So, if you have a platform with us and it is set up, the work that you put in is invested in it and it never goes away. In other words, if you have a platform with us and you’ve set up other connections for it, those connections never go away. They keep producing similar to an insurance annuity. Legacy to me means that we’re leaving something that is going to continue on. For me, sharing my expertise in apparel and retial is leaving a legacy. The purpose would be to have an ongoing internet chain of stores the first of its kind that is the largest chain of international stores in the world. It will continue to grow and help people, that is the legacy I want to leave. It’s intersting because what we built is a legacy platform not only for our business but for anyone that participates with us.
“Learn from your mistakes. The biggest thing is no fear. Have no fear.”
Q.Do you have a motto, a
scripture or a positive quote that when you’re having not the best days you think about and it helps you move forward?
A.
I wish for women to not focus on gender they’re already starting with the deficit, and they just need to plow forward and not even have that in the back of their head. They should go in there without any deficits of being a We’re in 2020 now, how would female.
Q.
you like to see the female entrepreNow, I do have to say that when I said neur moving forward in the next gen- it was a double edged sword, the other eration? part of it is that as females, we also have
A.
This is a double edged sword for me. I may not have a popular answer, but this is the way I see it. Women have to stop thinking in the workplace that their feminism sets them a part because if they do, that’s when it does happen. Their mindset has to be, “I’ve got the same degree, I’ve got a purpose, yes, I’m going to encounter some head winds and road blocks, but I’m going to find resolutions, solutions and strategies that put me ahead...work harder!”
the responsibility of bearing children and raising families a little bit more than men, so that’s probably the double edged sword. With the internet, you can work it out and you almost have to decide and understand what it will do to your family, and then how do you mitigate it. That’s what I had to deal with in the 80s and 90s raising a family. I can’t say that I have regrets, but it did effect my children in a way. Not everybody can have the perfect circumstances.
Well, I can say that every day I connect with the Creator and it’s sort of like a oxymoron. I grew up thinking I didn’t have time for prayer and I didn’t have time for self care, but it’s actually the reverse. The more time I spend with the Lord in the morning, the more I get done because He says “His ways are not our ways”. The bible says “He who wants more wisdom ask for it and it shall be given.” Everyday I ask for HIS wisdom that on my own, my mind can not compute! It’s fascinating to me it’s really about connecting with the Lord. The other thing is you may want to be an entrepreneur so you can raise your bank account. If you’re doing it for that reason you will be in slavery. You will be working and you won’t be fulfilling your purpose. Once you’re fulfilling your purpose, the money will come as a by product. Learn from your mistakes and the biggest thing is no fear. Have no fear.
WHAT WE CAN EXPECT
IN 2020 BY: TIFFANY POWERS
I hate to say it, but 2020 promises to be a year of instability, uncertainty, and change. Between the stress of the Presidential election, financial issues, and health concerns, the new decade is already off to a shaky start. Overall, people’s lives will feel unstable and uncertain. Life will be unstable globally. This will produce feelings of unease and fear. This year people will need to learn to trust, due to the increased uncertainty in so many areas of our lives. Through meditation and close reflection of what my spirit guides tell me, I have some thoughts on the issues that will affect us the most in the coming year.
HOW CAN WE NAVIGATE THESE CHALLENGES? All in all, the issues we’ll face in 2020 will make us all stronger. Once the current way of doing things is affected, people will have to become creative with the ways they make money, with their investments, and with their businesses. New ideas and processes will be born. As always, the best way to deal with change and stress is to listen to your intuition and your body. Take time to take care of yourselves. You and your body are your most important assets. Self-care will help you weather any storm that the year may bring!
HOW TO RELOCATE & STILL RUN YOUR BUSINESS BY: CHELSEA ROSA
Whether it is a move within your state or a move out of the country, wherever your life takes you, you need to be able to continue running your business. I personally have relocated multiple times over the past 2 years and consider each one a new learning experience in finding tips on how to make each move flow easier and reduce stress of having your business suffer or be put on hold while you are during your move.
In the entrepreneurial world, there is no such
thing as rest. Not necessarily because we can’t, but many of us do not want to! We are addicted to the “grind” our vision and reaching our next lofty goal. Our day to day life may seem scattered or “full” to others. Organization and compartmentalizing our business life is essential to moving forward and obtaining success in our business. These skills are also essential to have when it is necessary for us to relocate.
I consider the move to be the period when you are packing, the actual move, as well as the “settling in” period. This last move I did, I decided to do the majority of it myself. While working from home, I would use time blocking as a tool to help me use my time during the day efficiently. I allotted myself a certain time frame during the day for when I could pack. During those time blocks for packing, I would make sure I scheduled my “hands off” work responsibilities for the day, for example, phone meetings. Multi-tasking allows you as an entrepreneur to set aside time to pack but not actually let that time frame cut into your “work” time, it happens in addition to it. Another option is to hire and independent contractor through Uhaul, the thumbtack app for hiring freelancers or go through a private moving company to have them do it for you.
Once you have relocated, you will find that it is so much easier to continue your business because you have kept your essentials to running your business with you, charged and ready to go. I continued to use time blocking when it came to unpacking. I find this is important as well as continuing to have patience and understanding this is a process!
While I was packing, I found it was essential for me to keep all necessary electronics such as my laptop, important documents and all charging cords/units in a specific place. These were the items that I use on a daily basis and are essential for me to work. Before you transition and make the actual move, make sure all of your electronics are charged and in one place to make them easily accessible. When I made my most recent move I made sure they were always close to me, charged and ready to go. During the actual move, whether it is a 1-3 day process, have your day time blocked out. I chose to check my emails consistently, I continued to take phone calls, and at times I needed to use my laptop to create documents for clients etc. This is possible for you to do as well! It is important to understand that you need to utilize patience. Your move may take a longer amount of time. You may be driving and having to pull over to answer emails etc. Prepare yourself mentally prior to your move that this will happen and it will reduce your stress in the moment.
Another tip I suggest when you are relocating is to evaluate your new area ahead of time. Think of the important locations you need to know about. Being an entrepreneur, you may have a particular client base that you work with. In order to fast track meeting these people, do research ahead of time. There are also great apps on our phones such as “meetup” now, that allow you to find events that can lead you to your ideal clientele and to start getting your name out to your brand new market! By using these tips I have condensed into a list below, you will not only be able to continue running your business while relocating, but allow your business to thrive at the same time!
TIPS... -Time blocking -Don’t wait until the last minute -Compartmentalize -Keep a work essentials bag/box -Utilize patience and see your move as a journey -Take advantage of apps like “meetup” to meet new clientele in your new area -Hire movers -Spend time every night before bed organizing your upcoming schedule
