This is rarely exemplified so well as in the relationship between interior designer and paint contractor. After the style whiz selects the perfect palette to complement architecture, building materials, furnishings and accessories, those talented with a brush bring it to fruition with deft hands and a deeply rooted understanding of application techniques, product composition, layering and more. When interior designer and paint contractor meet in the middle, a true marriage of art and science is at work. In this special section presented in partnership with Benjamin Moore, 10 such dynamic duos showcase the perspectives, craftsmanship and love for hue and tone that they pour into every project. Introducing, the Faces of Design.

WHEN ONE CONTEMPLATES GREAT DESIGN, THEMES EMERGE. IT MIGHT BE EXPECTED THAT THESE WOULD BE AESTHETIC PRINCIPLES, AN EXPERT’S EXPERIENCE OR EDUCATION, OR THE HOMEOWNER’S LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT.

CERTAINLY, THOSE FACTORS PLAY A ROLE IN ANY PROJECT. BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT, SO OFTEN, THE MARKER OF IMPACTFUL DESIGN IS AN ALL-IMPORTANT, BEHIND-THE-SCENES INGREDIENT: COLLABORATION.

How did you three come to work together?

PHOTOGRAPHY: CARLEY/LACKFORD BY STACY ZARIN GOLDBERG; BROUGHTON/PENA BY MATT NAGER

Enrique: Paint can give everything a rhythmic look by connecting many aspects of the project, creating intimacy or openness across spaces. Paint a picture of the design journey and the role you play within it. Luis: We try to see things from the perspective of the design team, making their vision beautiful with color and craftsmanship. rowlandbroughton.com, forrestpaintingcolorado.com

IANTHA CARLEY ASPEN, CO SARAH BROUGHTON + ENRIQUE AND LUIS PENA

Sarah: We believe that walls are our canvas and backdrop to life and art—the quality of the painting is important. So, we like to work with level-five finishes a lot. Early on in our firm, Enrique executed that with fantastic attention to detail and dedication to craft. We have worked together for the 20 years since! Describe the impact of paint on interiors.

“People often try to identify what creates that ce rtain sense of elegance and luxury in their favorite spaces. It’s the paint and finishes.”

SILVER SPRING, MD IANTHA CARLEY + JAMES LACKFORD

When clients expect close to perfection, smoothing the behind-the-scenes processes is key. Enter, designer Iantha Carley and paint expert James Lackford. The husbandand-wife team has built a gorgeous portfolio, with Iantha contributing the eye for color and James keeping upto-date on products and techniques. And while Iantha’s attention to detail is most immediately noticed in a completed space, James plays that role too. “Putting the paint on is the easy part. The prep takes the most time. One of my best guys goes out at night with a bare bulb and circles everything he finds wrong on the surface.” ianthainteriors.com, properpaintandpaper.com

In historic, iconic spaces, selecting paint can be daunting. Every hue should be perfectly attuned to the design, worthy of the home’s precedence, elegant yet ahead of the trends. Such is the challenge that often faces Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson. Beloved for their balance of timelessness and today, the designers embrace the art of “repolishing” interiors in buildings like One57 and Herzog & de Meuron’s 56 Leonard. And behind the scenes, one partner has played a key role. Jonathan Kutzin met the design duo when they collaborated at a Kips Bay Decorators Show House in 2008. The rest is a history of perfect pairing. “I work almost exclusively with the design community to deliver top quality in high-end environments,” Jonathan shares. “I have developed many unique specialty finishes, including one that incorporates eyeshadow into the medium and others with mica flakes and iron oxides.” With this innovative mindset, he creates capsule collections of samples for each of Jamie and Caleb’s illustrious projects. As for the team’s favorite formula, Jamie says, “Benjamin Moore AURA®’s quality makes it our go-to pick.” drakeanderson.com, americapainting.nyc “Paint can be the star or supporting role. I like when we use it to surprise or ‘wink’ at you—a bright orange peeking at you from the back of a bookcase.”

EMILIE MUNROE + RYE NAZARIAN

Asked to share the story of her collaboration with paint craftsman Rye Nazarian, designer Emilie Munroe says, “There is no lack of stories to share over a glass of wine!” Indeed, from executing an entire project during a client’s two-week vacation to perfecting the boldest of hues (an Emilie signature), the duo is always up to a challenge. Rye speaks to one he often undertakes: “There is this ‘freshly fallen snow look’ people are often seeking. We do it by using 18-inch rollers and a sprayer loaded with Benjamin Moore Regal in a dead flat finish on the ceiling.” studiomunroe.com, surfacepaintdesign.com

Upon being asked to describe the impact paint has on an interior, Lisa Moon says, “Use of light, use of color and good space planning are the essence of great design. If any of these is not executed well, the environment falls flat or, worse, feels ‘off.’” It’s this level of insight that has made Lisa, her husband Peter and their team at Paper Moon Painting invaluable resources for Sara Malek Barney, the founder and principal at BANDD/DESIGN. She chimes in, “We believe that everyone deserves to live, work and experience life in an aesthetically pleasing space, and having true craftspeople applying paint of the quality Benjamin Moore provides is key to creating that.” As is the breadth of selection. “Benjamin Moore does an excellent job of curating rich, lovely colors, plus providing the greatest selection of whites and off-whites in various undertones,” Lisa says. “They always seem to land on the perfect amount of saturation, ensuring brilliant hues never look like Crayola colors on the wall.” Peter adds his application tip for those bright shades: “Use a gray primer under reds and blues to avoid multiple coats.” bandddesign.com, papermoonpainting.com

LOS ANGELES, CA TIMOTHY CORRIGAN + BILL SUPLEE

Why do you consider it critical to work with a skilled painting contractor? Timothy: Our projects tend to have beautiful architectural details, wood paneling and plasterwork, which require specialty painting. We also work on historic homes where an understanding of preservation is key.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DRAKE/ANDERSON/KUTZIN BY BRITTANY AMBRIDGE; MUNROE/NAZARIAN BY ALANNA HALE; BARNEY/MOON BY JUSTIN CLEMONS; CORRIGAN/SUPLEE BY BRITTANY AMBRIDGE

How do the feature benefits of a paint product influence your specification? Bill: We love Benjamin Moore’s SCUFF-X® for families because it is washable and scrubbable. Low or no-odor formulas like Eco Spec® are desirable for health-conscious clients and those with young children. I also recommend semigloss and eggshell finishes for kitchens and baths, but flat ones for ceilings and matte for walls. Which colors inspire you the most? Timothy: I am most influenced by the vibrant, saturated colors used in mid-18th-century French design. I like warm shades versus cooler ones in any color, because they make a space feel welcoming. timothy-corrigan.com, pinkpainter.net

AUSTIN, TX SARA MALEK BARNEY + LISA AND PETER MOON

Chad: Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select Matte is a favorite because it has a very subtle sheen but is almost flat. The way it toys with light gives a home a lovely glow. It can also be scrubbed clean without damage. paladinorudd.com, irawalden.com

TRACY MORRIS

MCLEAN, VA TRACY MORRIS + GEORGE FRITZ

“ The design journey is a bit of a relay race where we continuously pass the baton back and forth , supporting each other at each stage.”

A warm taupe, a deep blueberry, a soft blush—out of all the colors under the sun, these three, Tracy Morris says, will always captivate her. The interior designer has a deep appreciation for color’s role in her creations, and construction and paint expert George Fritz has a passion for exceptional paint application. “Paint can transform a ‘blah’ space into something spectacular,” Tracy says. George adds, “And selecting the right paint can make the difference between an easy project and happy client or an extended project and miserable client.” Perhaps it’s no wonder these two have been a dream project team for almost a decade.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL ALLISON PALADINO AND ZITA RUDD + CHAD QUIST

Why is your collaborative relationship critical to a project’s success? Allison: It broadens how creative you can be. Recently, we wanted to bleach a mahogany ceiling in an outdoor space and then apply a beige stain to cut the green hue and create a soft shade. It would be challenging, but Chad accomplished it in one try. He is a master of subtle texture! Describe the impact of paint on interiors. Zita: We’ve been doing a lot of transitional spaces where the walls, moldings and ceilings are the same color but varying finishes. This becomes a clean and serene envelope perfect for showcasing art, which exemplifies the influence paint has on our designs. What role does paint sheen/finish play?

Peter: We went to college together and ultimately found ourselves in the same industry 20 years later. Share your tips for paint selection. Everick: For a modern feel, Lisa and I like to specify our signature look, which includes painting the trim, doors and baseboard the same color as the wall in a satin or matte finish. In rooms where the ceilings are 8 feet tall or shorter, we choose white or lighter colors in flat finishes to create the illusion of a taller space.

Peter: Believe it or not, AURA® in a basic white. Simply put, it works the best for trim, and this is an area that often gets overlooked. Why do you consider it critical to work with a skilled interior designer? Peter: If the client loves their color selections, they’ll be happy with our work and vice versa. We make the colors look their best, but it’s all about the color for the homeowner. everickbrown.com, certapro.com/westchester CHICAGO, IL JOAN CRAIG + STEVE HESTER

What is your all-time favorite Benjamin Moore product?

How did you three come to work together?

EVERICK AND LISA BROWN + PETER BUTTENWIESER

Exactitude and craftsmanship, vision and inspiration —these are the elements that come together in the partnership of Joan Craig and Steve Hester. The designer and painting pro, and their respective teams, have made an art form out of collaboration for more than a decade. Joan knows that color transforms a space, and Steve’s 70-plus skilled painters take the utmost pride in their work. “We want to give our customers a finished product that will last for years to come,” Steve says. And they do, by helping designers like Joan select the perfect formula and finish before applying it beautifully. craigandco.com, hesterdecorating.com “ Th e final paint coats impact the big picture. If they aren’t perfect, every other effort and vision is diminished.”

“Use AURA® Bath & Spa matte in the bathroom, especially for deeper colors. I’ve got baths I painted 10-plus years ago that still look new because of this formula.” JAMES LACKFORD “High-gloss ceilings, which have great drama and bounce light off, take a room to heaven.”

I N P A R T N E R S H I P W I T H B E N J A M I N M O O R E Advice FROM THE Experts

“If you are aiming to create a glowing space with a level-five finish, select an enamel paint that provides that car paint-like look.”

GEORGE FRITZ

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN “ When chosen well, paint can regulate the mood of a room, making a sunny space feel fresh and cool or an area with minimal windows feel cozy and comfortable.”

JAMIE DRAKE “Deep, saturated hues for the win! Life is too short to live in a sea of white. Make a choice and lean in. If you tire of it (you won’t) you can easily repaint.”

SARAH BROUGHTON Chantilly Lace OC-65 Wind’s Breath OC-24 Jute AF-80

EMILIE MUNROE “ The level of preparation a surface needs for a perfect application depends on the sheen, and that decision is informed by many factors: lighting, traffic, color and more.” STEVE HESTER “Next to space planning, paint is the most significant effect we can have on an environment.”

LISA BROWN “Always determine the best color for a room by painting a 2-by-2-foot foam board and moving it around the space. It should suit in every patch of light.”

EDITOR’SLETTER

Art, Now

At this same museum in January 2015, I stood in front of John Singer Sargent’s Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, a painting I studied in my college art history classes. It has had a profound effect on me as both a design editor and an artist. I have my calendar marked to be back at the Frick in Fall 2023 to view Hendrick’s Steve with an equal measure of exuberant anticipation. Enjoy our art-focused issue. Please support artists and the arts.

L U X E S O U R C E C O M

I recently read that portraits by Barkley L. Hendricks will be featured alongside old masters at The Frick Collection in New York City. Hendricks is the first artist of color to have a solo show at the 87-year-old museum. That an institution presenting European art from the 14th to 19th centuries will be showing work of a contemporary artist whose focus is large-scale portraits of Black Americans—and who was an influential predecessor to the likes of Kehinde Wiley, Amy Sherald, Toyin Ojih Odutola and others—is significant for the art world...and, indeed, for us all.

Even for antiques, change can be good. That seems to be the philosophy of Architectural Artifacts founder Stuart Grannen and his new partners Robert and Debra Baum of Bedderman Lodging Co. After selling his original building in Ravenswood and toying with the idea of retiring, Grannen instead purchased a 35,000-square-foot school just south of Old Town and opened a reinvented space that includes a café, event areas and lots of antiques to peruse. Whatarchitecturalartifacts.commadeyoudecideto leap into this venture? Stuart Grannen: I have been buying nonstop for the last two years, and I’m proud of the pieces—they are some of the best items I’ve ever bought. I can’t wait to share them in our new place, which celebrates the joy of the hunt while bringing people together. Tell us about the space.Robert Baum: We’ve done a herculean amount of work to update the school and its systems. We deconstructed some of the building but retained the midcentury charm. When you walk in and see the juxtaposition of the space and Stuart’s antiques, it’s just very cool. What was the inspiration for the café and bar? SG: In the last few years, we really became like a theme park where families would wander around for hours. We started to think, what if we could feed them? What if they could walk around with a drink or co ee? RB : And it can work the other way; some people will come for the food and stay for the shopping.

What about events?RB: We will, of course, have weddings, mitzvahs and corporate events, but we also have space for smaller a airs like baby showers or poker games. And we have a gymnasium that can host roller skating or boutique pickleball, but if you drape it, suddenly it’s an elegant ballroom.

Downtown favorite Le Colonial has opened its newest outpost of the French Vietnamese restaurant in Lake Forest’s Market Square. “Over the years, many of our customers have relocated to communities north of Chicago,” says co-founder Joe King. “When this picturesque, centrally located property became available, we knew we had to have it.” King and his partner, Rick Wahlstedt, brought in Lake Forest resident Mark Knauer— whose hospitality-focused firm designed the Gold Coast location’s iconic interior—to bring the feel of 1920s Saigon to the new site. “The goal was not to duplicate downtown, but to create a completely different feel in the same vernacular,” Knauer says. “The building used to be the town’s police and fire station, but the ceilings were raised where the jail cells used to be, so when you walk in, it’s an ‘oh my’ moment.” To create that sense of awe and atmosphere, Knauer used hand-painted French tiles for the flooring, added a wrought-iron-and-glass canopy and brought in a team of artisans from Sweden to paint the murals that decorate the space. Just off the main dining room is a chic bar as well as a large palm-filled patio for outdoor dining in a tropical paradise. lecoloniallakeforest.com

The first solo museum show of Pilsen-based street artist Joseph Perez, best known as Sentrock, opens September 9 at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The exhibit features new work by the artist that reveals the origin story of his Bird City Saint character, which echoes Sentrock’s biography. “It’s a wonderful introduction for audiences not familiar with this exciting young artist,” says the museum’s Executive Director John McKinnon. “It’s a continuation of our commitment to support exceptional artists from Chicagoland.” Sentrock describes his work as a powerful form of expression that encapsulates his background, history, upbringing, empathy and compassion for his community.

For this exhibit, the artist will create a new mural in the galleries, as well as cut-out wood figures, paintings and drawings to tell his story. elmhurstartmuseum.org

Personally, I love creating patterns. I have 130 on my website right now and choosing those was a major undertaking, but I’m having a blast! What’s next? When people come into my gallery they say, “I love coming in here, I feel so much better.” I want people to feel happier because of what they see, and I really think my artwork does that. I’ve talked to some brands about collaborations, and maybe something will happen, but for now, I’m happy with where I am and how I’ve gotten here.

an artist? It’s a lonely thing to make artwork, but music is a constant companion. I love the energy of indie rock; it both pumps me up and puts me in the not-thinking headspace that I need to create. What’s your process? Collage is a giant puzzle. I love to play with color, shape and pattern. I save everything from little leftover pieces of my wallpaper to bits of notepaper, and then I use painter’s tape to play with placement. One thing calls to another, and it becomes a conversation between pattern and color.

CATHY LANCASTER

MEET THE MAKER

When collage artist Cathy Lancaster moved from Memphis to Chicago in 2019, she thought a spare bedroom in her family’s new home would function as a studio. But when it became clear that she couldn’t work in the tiny room, she began to think bigger—not just in terms of a work space, but also finding a place that could serve as a studio and gallery. “The art world is changing,” Lancaster says. “I realized with social media, people could come directly to me, and I didn’t necessarily need to be in other galleries.” Opening anything in 2020 was a challenge, but Lancaster pushed through and now, in addition to her original art, she also has an extensive line of wallpaper available through her Lakeview gallery and website.

Beni Rugs worked with stylist Colin King to perfect their townhouse space in New York City’s Greenwich Village (left). In a sleek corner of Gabriel & Guillaume’s Manhattan skyscraper residence, beautiful furnishings mingle with works of art. Galerie Philia’s latest traveling showroom extends to all five floors of a stately brownstone (previous page).

When it came time for Beni Rugs to open a brick-and-mortar outpost, the standard-issue gallery didn’t feel right. So, co-founder Robert Wright opted to do what a rare but emerging coterie of brands have embraced: roll out the welcome mat for clients in a place that would typically have one in the first place. An actual home. In 2018, the then digital-only company got its start by allowing people to fully customize Moroccan rugs. But a few years later, the time had come to expand to a physical location. “We wanted it to feel like you’re coming over to your friend’s apartment....and oh, by the way, on the floor are rugs from our newest collection,” Wright explains. “It was a fun exercise to think: ‘Well, why don’t we come up with an apartment in New York that’s the home of our ideal Beni consumer?’” They imagined everything from this fictitious client’s art collection down to the trinkets brought home from their travels. Thus, their new appointment-only Greenwich Village studio in a circa 1900 brownstone on West 9th Street in Manhattan was born. Other brands embracing the idea that style begins at home include Casa Perfect, Lee Broom, Gabriel & Guillaume and Galerie Philia (the latter of which opened its latest traveling showroom inside a $10 million Chelsea apartment). “We wanted to show that you can not only live with these historical pieces, but also mix them in a very casual way,” says Guillaume Excoffier, co-founder (with Nancy Gabriel) of Gabriel & Guillaume, which procures everything from Martin Szekely’s 1988 Betty armchairs to a 1950 Italian sofa by Federico Munari. The gallery, featuring rotating exhibitions, is currently ensconced in an appointment-only, twostory residence at 11 West 57th Street in New York City. “We have created a new kind of retail experience—something more exclusive, something more private— like entering into the apartment of a collector,” Gabriel says. It’s no surprise then that companies are seeing this model resonate with consumers, as navigating the sometimes-arduous task of making design choices now seems much easier in a familiar setting.

“Iconic Shaker pieces, like chairs and boxes, have always had a pull on us as designers,” explains Ladies & Gentlemen Studio’s Dylan Davis, adding that working with the museum has “been an amazing opportunity to do a deeper dive into their culture.” Davis, who founded his multidisciplinary Brooklyn studio in 2010 with wife Jean Lee, believes historical principles of Shakerism can change how we look at contemporary life. For example, they reimagined one of the Shakers’ most intentionally designed furnishings that centers around a closely held belief: the workstation. The pair’s secretary-style iteration features just the right amount of room for everyday items while allowing them to be concealed at the end of the day ladiesandgentlemenstudio.com

JOLIE NGO As the youngest member of the museum’s Makers’ Circle, recent art school graduate Jolie Ngo creates ceramic ‘cyborg-like’ objects and vessels using modern technologies, including 3-D printing and rapid prototyping. A child of the early aughts, her aesthetic was shaped by digital interfaces including Minecraft and The Sims, and she continues to explore the intersection between handmade and automated. “Shaker work is quite the opposite of my own with a focus on simplicity and purpose,” Ngo says. “Their objects lack unnecessary ornamentation and decorative detail.” But, nonetheless, she has come to appreciate this ethos of making. “They believed that mastery of craft was a partnership with tools, materials and process—an idea I hold close within my own work, continuously probing the synergy between what is formed by hand versus technology.” ngojolie.net

A step ahead

As a direct response to a bonnet and cloak she found in the archives, the trail blazing artist created a whimsical chair out of muslin layered with ruffles and ruching. Stout describes the final result as “a silly, frilly duo of cloaked and bonnet-ed chairs joined in a permanent Shaker dance.”

A HISTORICAL RENOVATION IS IN THE WORKS AT THE SHAKER MUSEUM.

On the Move

Today, the Shaker Museum in Chatham, New York, continues to tell their story, showcasing the most comprehensive collection of art, furniture, objects and materials in the country—much of which was out of view for the last decade. The museum will soon enter a new iteration, and double in size, as it moves to a 19th-century industrial building within Colombia County, where Selldorf Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects are heading up interior and exterior renovations respectively. An inaugural Makers’ Circle, consisting of contemporary artists and designers, is collaborating with the museum’s leadership on institutional decisions. As executive director Lacy Schutz notes, “the Shaker Museum continues to convene and engage a community of creatives connected to its material culture and whose work is informed by it today.” shakermuseum.us

KATIE STOUT When going through the Shaker Museum’s collection, Katie Stout was drawn to colorful, sweet and soft objects— in other words, not the iconic pieces noted for minimalism.

Arriving in the United States around 1774, the Shakers were a Utopian sect who created a distinctly new design vernacular. Prioritizing function above all else, they favored simple, pared-down aesthetics that allowed an object’s materiality to shine. The group was also known for championing gender and racial equality, communal living and sustainability. THE TANNERY ROW

ON A PERSONAL

Where do you find inspiration? It changes all the time, but our customers are often at the heart of it. They use our leathers in so many interesting ways. For example, Mitchel and Mitchel is a local company that manufactures custom range hoods and covers them with our leather.

| INDUSTRY INSIDER |

A sked to describe his path to his profession, John Culliton says: “Leather tends to run in families, and my family is no different. My father worked at the Horween Leather Company, so I grew up in the business. When given the chance to oversee the sales division and also design new leathers at Horween, it just felt right.” Famous for being the official provider of leathers to the NFL, Horween has a storied legacy. As John observed more of the trade’s inner workings, he noticed a need in the market. Tanneries were providing the utmost quality to big brands, but if one wanted to obtain these world-class varieties in non-bulk quantities, it was challenging. So, he founded The Tannery Row. “We give artisans and smallto-medium-size businesses access to leather that has historically been reserved for big companies,” John says. “We represent the best-in-class U.S. and European tanneries, including a premium line of upholstery leather for interior design projects.” And the quality of selection never falters. “When seeking new tannery partners, we look for ones that are at the pinnacle in their type of leather—these are the top players in their craft.” Perhaps it isn’t so surprising that the industry’s major designers flock to The Tannery Row’s West Loop showroom for unique and quality leather.

NOTE Tell us about one of your favorite product offerings. Our upholstery leather collection is called Arazzo, and it is curated from Germany and Italy. Twice per year, I attend Lineapelle, a leather show in Milan. I admired the leathers we’ve included in the Arazzo collection for years at the show before being able to bring them to Chicago. They are truly premium and perfect for projects where the end product must feel luxurious, beautiful and elegant.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Above Covered in leather from The Tannery Row, this range hood by Mitchel and Mitchel makes a statement. Opposite John Culliton stands in The Tannery Row’s showroom.

Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? I consider the evolution of The Tannery Row my greatest success. When I first had the idea, I had no idea that it would become what it is today. Our clients build their own businesses around our products and we continue to cultivate new leather possibilities for our customers. Describe your dream creative project. Taking my favorite upholstery leather, Arazzo Capri, and incorporating it into a large-scale restaurant project without restriction. I’d love to work with a restaurant that really wants to embrace the natural characteristics of the leather. “It’s a great feeling to develop a piece of leather—the look, the feel, the color—and then turn that into a finished good.”

From a front façade to a fireplace design or a spalike bathroom wall, stone plays an integral role in creating exterior and interior places that feel both sturdy and stylish. For decades, Eldorado Stone has been inviting architects, designers, builders and homeowners alike to explore the possibilities as they seek that marriage of beauty and function. With a wide range of premium stone profiles and a second-to-none approach to the development and application of trend-leading color palettes, the company has become a beloved stone resource.

And now, it’s entering a new chapter … “Through a brand refresh and novel product offerings, our goal is to continue to promote a lifestyle-centric perspective and emphasize how stone can play a key role in creating spaces where memories are made and design influences the everyday moments of life,” says Sarah Lograsso, Eldorado Stone’s director of marketing and product design. “We want to help people curate the perfect backdrop for every space.”

A SEASONED STONE PURVEYOR’S NEXT MOVE: A FRESH LOOK + NEW PRODUCTS

THE START OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL™ “With respect to new product development, we look carefully at the influence of people’s lifestyles on architecture and design, and how the comprehensive purpose of everyday environments will impact those who inhabit them in a very practical way,” Lograsso says. “We look to where a client chooses to spend time and what draws them into that space. Is it a tranquil and serene retreat for unwinding at the end of the day? Or is it the hustle and bustle of a lively kitchen for family gatherings? Perhaps a curated display of adventures traveled? Any of those elements can spark inspiration and play an integral role in shaping beautiful spaces.”

For their freshman debut, The High Key’s Relief collection explores curvaceous shapes as is evident in the Glove Couch. Founder and creative director John Vieweg first designs pieces using 3D software, after which a network of manufacturers build the designs to exact renderings. Vieweg contemplated the idea of ‘relief’ throughout the design process: from the physical relief of sitting on a sofa, to the way in which reliefs were historically made by carving away at materials—a method employed on the sofa’s interior foam body to achieve its final construction. thehighkey.design

So, when their clients—a couple who had just purchased an apartment in a new Manhattan building—wanted to gut their kitchen in favor of injecting some personality and color, the designers were more than happy to oblige. “We landed on a beautiful blue for the cabinetry, which looks rich, sophisticated and playful,” Anderson says of the chosen hue: Benjamin Moore’s Vermont Slate. The painted custom cabinetry also cam ouflages all appliances and even houses a semi-walk-in pantry and breakfast bar. “The color was the biggest point of departure, and the marble came second,” Anderson continues. “The client loves interesting stones, and this room has three! The Oyster White marble on the countertops and backsplash is highly gestured with organic veining, while the White Thassos and Blue de Savoie marbles on the floor are laid in a geometric Mondrian-style pattern but they all marry together wonderfully.” Another focal point is the plush L-shape banquette, which is built into the back of the peninsula, saving valuable square footage and giving the room a nice sense of movement. This informal dining nook is visually connected to the prep area with a large lighting piece from Apparatus overhead while artwork by Melinda Hackett enlivens the entire space. “This kitchen isn’t huge,” Anderson says, “but it certainly feels dynamic.” drakeanderson.com

Drake/Anderson filled this Manhattan kitchen with striking touches, like custom cabinetry in Benjamin Moore’s Vermont Slate, Oyster White marble countertops, Mondrian-esque stone flooring, artwork by Melinda Hackett and an Apparatus light fixture.

To satiate the same client’s love of color and Bisazza tile, Drake/Anderson enveloped a powder bath located off the office in a mesmerizing gradient mosaic. “The upper half almost recalls windows in a skyscraper,” Jamie Drake says. Since the design of the adjacent workspace is fun and whimsical, the same feeling was carried into the bathroom with a playful all-over tile arrangement. Drake notes that, “the clean, contemporary floating vanity doesn’t compete with the surroundings, but its curved shape adds another layer of visual interest.” A benefit of sheathing every surface in tile? “It melts the perimeters of the room, making it appear larger,” Drake explains. drakeanderson.com

The new Eutopia line of glass mosaics features five botanical patterns—three of which are based on wallcovering motifs previously conceived by Bullard, including Sultan’s Garden (shown)—in 49 custom shades. “This collection was born out of my passion for East-Indian and Middle-European textiles,” Bullard says, “which often contain magical patterns depicting the Tree of Life and Mughal flowers.” annsacks.com HEADSHOT: COURTESY DESIGNER. For a residence in Rye, New York, designer Shannon Murray Petruzello of Shannon Murray Interiors envisioned a glamorous powder room inspired by her client’s favorite color. “This home was originally built in the 1980s, so we did a full renovation of the first floor— including this existing powder room—in order to modernize it for a young family,” explains Murray Petruzello, who paired a cool marbleized wallpaper by Schumacher with Benjamin Moore’s Cable Knit Sweater on the remaining walls.

The only mandate was to incorporate blue, so we gave this bath a ‘wow’ factor using many shades of the vibrant hue. I really enjoy creating one-of-a-kind powder rooms—they are truly the best space to do something out of the ordinary. Talk to us about the brass accents. We carried the subtle gold shimmer in the wallpaper through to the modern brushed-brass Kohler sink fi xtures. Lucky for us, the client already had the metallic mirror from her previous home, and it worked perfectly with the round sconce from Arteriors.

What an interesting vanity! The custom L-shape vanity was purely an aesthetic choice. The client didn’t have a need for storage below, which allowed us to do something a bit di erent with the design. For the wallpaper installation, we mimicked the form of the vanity and extended it from one accent wall up to the ceiling. shannonmurrayinteriors.com

Ar tists to watch: Rebecca Ness, Delphine Desane, Cindy Ji Hye Kim, Chibuike Uzoma and Vamba Bility. Don’t miss: The Independent Fair in New York this September, which will focus on overlooked 20 th century artists. Paul Claude Gardère, the first Haitian artist in residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem, will be on view—I’m excited about that. Next frontier: Starting a monthly dinner series where artists, clients and board members can discuss changes that need to be made at the institutional level.

A Brooklynite by way of Haiti, Gardy St. Fleur built his practice showing beginner collectors the ropes—and joys—of the art world. As business grew, he drilled down on introducing emerging, as well as historically overlooked, talents to budding collectors, adding mentorship and management of working artists along the way. saintfleur.com

Nightstand companion: Tell Them I Said No by Martin Herbert—a collection of essays by artists, including David Hammons (a hero of mine), who were creating for the purpose of transaction but ultimately retreated from the art world. Unforgettable institution: Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland, which was started by a Swiss dealer couple with an incredible modern art collection. The building was designed by Renzo Piano—it’s very special.

Making headlines: The art world is bonkers right now with long waiting lists for new works, sold-out shows and record-breaking auction prices. See: Louise Bourgeois’ Spider sold for $40 million at Art Basel and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn sold last May for $195 million, breaking auction records for an American artist. Looking forward: Amanda Baldwin’s vibrant landscapes are on my radar. I’m excited about her upcoming show at Hesse Flatow in New York City. Hot spot: Berlin has amazing contemporary galleries like Soy Capitán and Wentrup. Sunday school: In 2019, I began presenting Sunday art history lessons on Instagram Live and developed a sizable following during the pandemic. Topics have ranged from art movements like Dada, to the intellectual explosion that took place at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, to deeper dives into artists like Ruth Asawa. Treasure trove: I find new talent through critical reviews and art fairs like NADA Miami that focus on younger galleries and emerging artists. Highlight reel: Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (on view through early October) is a gorgeous show. The way he approaches portraiture with both spirit and brush, as well as his signature finger painting, is inspiring. Collector’s mantra: Buy what you love. The intrigue and attraction should feel instinctual.

SOCIAL STUDIES

ARTS EVOLUTION

Inspiration fix: One of the realms where truly original ideas are born is science fiction, and that is most of what I recreationally read these days. Ted Chiang and Liu Cixin are authors that I come back to. Arts destination: The vibrancy and creative freedom of Mexico City are rare—there’s always something unexpected. Hot topic: One of the most important subjects being discussed in the world at large, is the essential right to project different realities and possible futures. I’ve seen so many resonances with this idea. One example is the Venice Biennale, titled The Milk of Dreams curated by Cecilia Alemani, which, from specific art history perimeters, questions the agency of imagination. Pièce de résistance: Few things compare to The Lightning Field (1977) by Walter De Maria—a land art work in New Mexico in the Dia’s collection. De Maria used to say that every great artwork should have at least 10 meanings, and the myriad of ideas that can be interconnected to this piece is almost unfathomable. The way in which one experiences it, and what one can obtain from that experience, speaks directly a bout what we do at Dia.

Anchored in New York with satellite locations in the American West and overseas, the Dia Art Foundation is a force in the nonprofit space. For Humberto Moro—newly-appointed deputy director of program—evolving exhibitions, publications and public engagement is intrinsically linked to telling an even more inclusive history of art. diaart.org

RAINBOW CONNECTION

When Chelsea Neman Nassib founded Tappan Collective 10 years ago, online-native galleries were a novelty. Fast forward to 2020 and the platform, thanks to its investment in producing artist studio visits and profiles for their website, found itself precociously equipped to connect stories with collectors in a digital world. tappancollective.com

New currency: With the rise of NFT’s, the art world has even more accessible paths for all. We sell NFT COAs, which allow us to include a contract in the sale encompassing royalties, so that every time the artwork trades, the artist makes 10 percent. This can be life-changing because artists don’t make a percentage of secondary sales, which is where prices often make headlines. Gallery crush: Del Vaz Projects by Jay Ezra Nayssan. Jay operates a galleryfarmstead from his home in Santa Monica. There’s also an apothecary that sells everything from Persian tea to CBD lavender salve. It’s wonderful to see curators bringing a more artful approach to retail and vice-versa. One to watch: Lisa Dengler. We just signed her and are so excited about her paintings and stone sculptures. On deck: Opening our first physical gallery. I want it to be a place that anyone can walk into and find something—almost like a vinyl store.

Frustrated by the quality of studio space in New York City, artist Stef Halmos saw an opportunity to develop her dream resource. She set her sights on three historic mills in the Hudson Valley, converting them into Foreland: a vibrant arts campus spanning galleries, studios, collective workspace, public programming and event spaces—all built to create agency for working artists. forelandcatskill.com; stefhalmos.com

GREATER GOOD

Life-changing institution: The Noguchi Museum in Queens. It taught me how to sit quietly and take a long look. Coming up: This spring, we’re hosting an event curated by Art Handler. I can’t reveal too much, only that it’s a multi-event experience not to be missed! We’re also slated to have a show by New York City’s Bortolami Gallery featuring Robert Bordo. Design crush: Artist duo Kristen Wentrcek and Andrew Zebulon. I’ve never seen such high level of craft meet fearlessness and yet somehow remain functional. My wife and I own several of their pieces and admire them daily.

Fantasy acquisitions: Anything ever made by Carrie Mae Weems! If I could extend the spree, I’d buy a Carlton bookcase by Ettore S ottsass, a Cecily Brown painting, a Sam Moyer sculpture and a large wall piece by this little-known artist named Sol LeWitt. Dreaming big: I’d love to expand this concept, potentially in partnership with institutions. It’s also my hope that my team continue to spearhead consistent public programming that’s accessible to people of every age, color and educational background.

On deck: The first show scheduled for next year is called Alchemy and features Black artists from around the United States, including Thornton Dial, Wifredo Lam and Emma Amos. It’s a group show around this idea that in marginalized communities, there’s an innate call to take whatever you have and turn it into something that transcends its first state of being. Virtual reality: During the pandemic, galleries introduced 3-D viewing rooms. This technology had been around too long for us to be suffering from the 2-D aspects of photography! Now anyone can experience sculpture in 3D; you can even see surveys of the Whitney Biennial on YouTube. It’s a beautiful thing about the world we live in. Arresting artist: Ilídio Candja Candja, who was born in Mozambique around the time they won their independence from Portugal. He paints these beautiful abstractions around the influences of colonization. Lasting impression: The exhibition What is Left Unspoken, Love at Atlanta’s High Museum achieved true resonance. Fair game: Atlanta is 49 percent black. Generally speaking, art in the South is so much more diverse than what is currently being seen. Our programming moving forward will be reflective of this.

Industry buzz: There’s been a lot of talk about works by young artists reaching upwards of six figures privately and at auction. Three factors contributed to this phenomenon: newly-created crypto wealth, which added diverse buyers to the market, trillions in American dollars printed and a lack of primary access to work for new collectors. Fall happenings: September 2 marks the first installment of the Frieze Art Fair in Seoul. I’m excited to see what happens when the art world meets the sophistication of South Korea’s artists, institutions and collectors. Closer to home, the September opening of Hauser & Wirth in West Hollywood will be a treat for Angelenos. Buoyed by: The increased presence of Latinx, AAPI and BIPOC run galleries, including Commonwealth and Council (LA), Regular Normal (NYC), LaPau (LA), Calderón (NYC), Mariane Ibrahim (Chicago), Sow & Tailor (LA), Make Room (LA) and Estrella (NYC). Collecting 101: With so much art in the world, working around themes of identity, geography, medium, or a combination of three, can help focus decision-making while creating depth.

Understanding a client’s tastes and comfort levels with design ideas is always a good place to start. Jasmin Reese Interiors is a Chicago-based firm that always begins with a style session to understand how “high octane” a client is willing to go. Reese works in many different styles—blending antiques with modern elements, dark finishes mixed with light, and high-low pieces. Reese is known for “bold, wallpapered ceilings with artworks at eye level, and artfully-designed color bomb rooms that are both whimsical and sophisticated.” She loves to mix materials and work with lots of color, and shares, “Lighting is everything!” Reese says: “The open plan is not going away, and more people are treating the kitchen as an extension of the living space. I’m designing my kitchen right now with an antique lamp right into the island top to make it feel like a London hotel bar with soft lighting.”

The world of design always benefits from cross-pollination and comprehensive experience. When Melissa Denys transitioned from the luxury fashion industry to interior design, she brought that sensibility and her multifaceted experiences with her. Much like a fashion designer works with a garment, Denys ensures that the spaces she designs are beautiful and functional reflections of each client’s tastes and lifestyle. After working for a few high-end residential design firms in Chicago, she launched Melissa Denys Interiors in 2018. From her experience in sales, Denys brings a deep enthusiasm for customer service and client relationships to her projects. “Providing an enjoyable experience and cultivating a positive client-designer relationship is really important to me,” she says. Her style is versatile—rather than focusing on a signature look—and is centered on the client’s needs and desires as she makes their vision a reality.

• What kitchen palettes are trending? I’ve been getting lots of requests for greens and blues, which I love! Though white kitchens are always popular, and warm grays have been in demand recently.

• How are you integrating technology into your kitchen designs? A lot of clients are choosing smart faucets. They really love this feature because they don’t need to touch the faucet with messy hands while cooking or cleaning up.

• How is technology influencing your designs? We are constantly thinking of how to improve the way we interact with our spaces. Today, we have patented V-Motion technology, which allows users to open and close their cabinetry with a slight wave of the hand. This makes working in the kitchen or bath easier and mess-free while preserving the cabinet’s finish.

• What design trends have you seen recently? We are seeing more interest in bringing diverse colors and textures into both kitchens and baths. A perfect example of this is our Genius Loci display, which combines both matte and glossy green tea glass, elm wood and brass details. While white and gray will never be out of style, we are also noticing clients leaning toward a more diverse and daring use of color. We have also seen a trend toward innovative, multifunctional kitchens. “We are committed to bringing the very best design, quality and customer service to our discerning clientele.”

The design of one’s home should be just as personal as the memories made there. This is especially true for the kitchen and bathroom, both spaces where a lot of quality time is spent. Sunny and Robert Accarino, principals of Mobili Möbel, uphold this notion with each project. “The end design always has the client in mind,” Sunny says. “Understanding how they use their spaces and go about their daily lives is integral to any successful design.” By o ering a curated selection of European cabinetry, flooring and architectural products, Mobili Möbel provides homeowners with a of high-quality finishes in any number of combinations. “Everyone needs a well-laid-out and smart use of storage space,” Robert shares of their kitchen design protocol. “Whether you are a gourmet chef or someone who heats up leftovers, we can provide a space that is tailormade for you.”

Beautifully.” is the slogan that sums up Starved Rock Cabinetry’s values of true craftsmanship and precision-engineered quality. SR Cabinetry was founded over 30 years ago in CEO Keith Miller’s basement, and today it occupies an award-winning 9,300-square-foot Glenview showroom. “The kitchen is the most important room in the house, so we want to make sure our clients achieve one that doesn’t just look beautiful, but also functions beautifully,” Miller says. “And we want to make the process as easy as possible.” That’s why they work without the entire process from design to manufacturing, delivery and installation. “That level of accountability allows us to guarantee that our clients will be satisfied with the quality of our workmanship.”

• Protecting the environment: “As craftspeople and cabinet makers, we love working with wood. But with that love comes a responsibility to use our resources in smart, sustainable ways. All of our wood comes from sustainable forests in the U.S., and is coated in a water-based finish—not chemical—which is safer for the environment. We are also in partnership with the One Tree Planted foundation, so for every cabinet we sell, we pay for a tree to be planted in honor of the customer.”

• Mix and Match: To achieve harmony, we use a visual layout with an inspiration board and samples, and try mixing hardware with a light finish on a dark cabinet or a dark counter with a light cabinet. Underscoring the home’s sunlit atmosphere, Olson integrated lighter materials to “bring a breath of fresh air to the space,” she says. The team stained the dark oak floors a pale gray hue and re-fabricated the kitchen from scratch, replacing the previously ornate dark finishes with floating steel-and-glass shelving, cerused-oak cabinetry and a statuary-marble waterfall island. Natural stonework also accentuates the fireplaces, from the Indiana white limestone surround in the living area to the smoky gray marble flanking the new bedroomAlongsidefirebox.these rich architectural details, Olson swathed each room in sensuous textures, softening the home’s tactile and acoustic atmosphere.

Olson and her team first focused on bolstering the architectural millwork to “create this beautiful canvas we could layer on top of,” she explains. This included new baseboards, crown molding, doors and wall paneling, particularly in the revamped foyer, which is punctuated by a vivid cobalt William McLure painting. From the office to the main bedroom, custom floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving filled with books and ceramics cultivates a sense of being accumulated over time.

An eclectic selection of art amplifies this collected feel, featuring works by Midwestern artists like Joelle Somero and Dana De Ano.

The client’s bedroom feels utterly cocooned in textiles, from the cashmere area rug to the suede wall paneling. Silky wallcoverings surround the great room, where contemporary furnishings are upholstered in a bevy of linens, velvets, wools and leathers. And for every window “we added these really soft ivory treatments to frame the views,” the designer notes. Though technically a bachelor pad, both the client and design team always defined the apartment as a place to be shared, where his family and friends would intuitively gravitate together. “We wanted to make people feel that this is a home you’re welcome to all the time,” Olson says. “So, we were very thoughtful in space planning. We made sure there was a place to sit most anywhere guests might gather.” The penthouse’s vast terrace in particular was primed for enjoying precious Chicago sunlight, offering a distinct dining section, large seating area and a more intimate alcove for outdoor get-togethers. The space has quickly become a favorite among guests, “as sitting out there with the Chicago skyline in the background is just an amazing experience,” the client shares. Inside, parties naturally circulate around the central great room, from the formal dining area with its banquet-worthy table set for up to 10 guests, to the expansive living space where “you’re greeted immediately with huge sofas that basically beg you to come sit,” Olson laughs. With its custom brass étagère and antiqued-glass backsplash diffusing the light, the shimmering bar area anchors festivities between both spaces. Executing these changes together became “such a fun journey,” Olson says. “The client really understood how design can transform.” For the final reveal, the team prepared a special unveiling complete with candles, flowers and cocktails. Despite consulting on every selection and witnessing all the new additions, the results still felt thrilling, says the client. Looking back, however, he most treasures the moments just before entering his new place, walking through the city he loves. “I remember getting a little emotional,” he reminisces. “I just kept thinking, ‘I can’t believe I’m going to walk into my dream home.’ ”

othing quite compares to high-rise living in Chicago— that feeling of being fully surrounded by vistas of the city that gave birth to skyscrapers. Such views totally entranced one homeowner who found a penthouse overlooking the Chicago River as it winds through the glistening cityscape. The luminous apartment epitomized his ideal of a metropolitan abode. When he met with interior designer Brynn Olson, he only planned to tweak the main bedroom and kitchen. But as they progressed through the project, he discovered that “home” meant more than just finding the perfect view. He still craved that sky-high experience, but one infused with domestic creature comforts. “What I liked about Brynn and her team was that they asked me how I wanted to live,” the client shares. “I realized that, yes, the space was exactly what I envisioned, but the look and feel of it wasn’t right. I wanted it to be comfortable and inviting.” Adds Olson, “When we approached the space, we moved away from the concept of a penthouse. We wanted this to feel like a real home, because sometimes you can lose that in a place like this, surrounded by steel and glass.”

That’s how a two-room design project ballooned into a complete reimagining of city living.

Interior designer Brynn Olson brought warmth to a Chicago penthouse primed for entertaining. She cultivated an inviting alcove on the terrace with an RH Havana sofa covered in a Sunbrella twill and a Holly Hunt Cachalot concrete coffee table.

The casual, cozy vibe is just what the owners desired. And the screened porch behind those stately old trees has become a favorite respite for lounging, coffee in hand and laptop at the ready. The owners feel heard—which is exactly what drew the wife to Maher’s work in the first place. “I always believe that people hire me to design their house, not mine,” Maher muses. “I pride myself on listening.”

fter living in a classic, center-hall Colonial on the edge of a country club for 30 years and raising their children to established young adulthood, the owners of a North Shore property felt it was time for a change—but not in scenery. Instead of moving, they decided to tear down their existing abode and rebuild. “We needed something that would serve our lifestyle for the next 30 years,” says the wife, who wanted to maintain a smaller space and situate the primary bedroom on the main floor, keeping the upstairs bedrooms for visitors. They also wanted to simplify and reduce clutter. “That former house wasn’t going to cut it,” she adds.

The constraints of the existing lot—the country club at the back and a series of beloved 100-year-old oak trees close to the house— directed Munson’s decision to stretch the layout east-west, with the common areas in the rear overlooking the greens, including a screened porch off the kitchen that features a delicate balance of openness and privacy. “They wanted a sense of flow,” the architect explains. “To be able to see from one space to the other and grab as much light off the golf course as possible.”

Working with architect Steve Munson, builder James Malapanes and the residents’ longtime landscaper Bruce Everly, Maher weighed in on the interior architecture before devising a clean and contemporary yet warm plan for the furnishings, injecting the palette with just enough color to make it feel fresh and vibrant. “She loves pattern and color,” Maher says of the wife, “but this was a transition to cleaner lines.”

The new construction’s barnlike structure— a dark blue exterior with light stone accents and a dark, standing-seam zinc roof—was certainly a first in the more traditional neighborhood, but it suited the couple’s release of the past. “If we were going in a new direction, it had to be totally fresh,” Munson says. Maher brought the dramatic blue hue inside, anchoring the entry with the same shade on the ceiling and carrying it through to the kitchen cabinetry. “Because the house is so open, the exterior colors needed to relate to the interior, more so than many other residences,” she explains. Furthermore, the openness of the rooms necessitated continuity. As a result, variations of the gray-blue shade appear throughout the main floor: on the living area sofa, the dining room banquette and an ottoman in the entry, where built-in shelves serve as a library. The designer also incorporated lighter elements as a counterpoint to the dark blue, such as wood ceiling beams and paneling as well as stone fireplaces. To give the dwelling a collected feel, Maher folded in the wife’s found objects along with pieces by local artists and designers, including a blue-and-white floral wallpaper in the powder room by Chicago artist Erin Minckley.

A

While she and her husband were still in the planning stage, she saw the interior design of a friend’s home and was so impressed that she knew she’d found her designer: Pam Maher, who happened to have also been her former longtime neighbor. “She really captured not only the personality of the client, but also this intimate sense of the space,” the wife recalls. “It just felt like somebody had listened to the owner and then executed it flawlessly.”

The design is not simply beautiful, it is also attentive: All door openings are wide enough to accommodate a paralyzed friend’s wheelchair, which can clear the primary bedroom’s zerothreshold shower. “Once you’ve been through that with someone, you see the daily indignities that come from not having thoughtful design,” says the wife. For the hard of hearing, acoustics were improved with wood accents on the ceiling, which are a “more traditional height rather than grand,” she adds. That lowered ceiling height offers the added benefit of preventing echoes while making the space feel warm and enveloping.

Having built a residence in Montana some 15 years ago, the couple liked having all the creative parties collaborate from the get-go, and they knew Maher would be an excellent fit.

Negative Space

For a sculptor, inspiration comes from creating his own problems—and then solving them. BY MIKKI BRAMMER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY FAVARULA

Though these works all begin the same way— strips of clay rolled into coils that are gradually built vertically to create a vessel—they soon begin to diverge. “It’s strange for me to work alongside finished pieces; I try to steer away from the proclivity to imitate my final results,” the artist explains. Once the clay is partially dry, he begins carving away from the surface, cutting out certain areas and reapplying them elsewhere, often adding aspects of color and texture along the way. “In all of my work, my process has conceptually been the same,” he says. “Which is just taking a preexisting material and an established medium and then reintegrating them into something incredibly different from how they originated. I’m creating my own problems and solving them.”

Drawing inspiration from the material itself, his stoneware pieces play with negative space, utility, form and color—each with its own message to convey or perception to challenge.

I

“But I hope people come away pleasantly surprised—or questioning their own values of beauty and possibility.”

Just as the form of each artwork is improvised, so too are the color choices, which Weber says are generated from his studio environment— especially the music he listens to while working, which ranges from rap to experimental to alternative. “There’s a synesthetic component to it to some degree because I hear color and form and try to emulate that on or within the surfaces of my sculptures,” the artist says. “I know certain combinations are correct for an individual piece because for me, color and form go hand in hand. I can never have the same patterns on more than one piece.”

like to say all my work starts with a bag of clay, and my ideas originate somewhat in that bag too,” says sculptor Zachary Weber.

In contrast to the abstract, otherworldly forms of “Seedlings,” his porcelain “Smiley Vase” collection takes a more traditional form, each adorned with a spray-painted smiley face for an irreverent touch. “They’re well built and meant to be easy on the eye,” Weber explains. “To have that juxtaposed by a gesture of spray paint is conceptually really interesting.”

Though he often has certain messages in mind while forming a new work, Weber welcomes all interpretations of his sculptures. “It would be cliché for me to just tell people to come up with their own meanings,” he muses.

Take his recent “Seedlings” collection.

Zachary Weber’s series, including “Seedlings” (opposite), “Bouquets” (bottom, left) and “Smiley Vases” (left) reinterpret traditional forms of pottery. His experimental leanings have led him to explore color with tiles (bottom, right) and 2D sketches (below). “I need to satisfy my proclivity toward formal and optical experimentation inside two dimensions before I venture back to clay,” the artist explains.

Architecture: John Ike and Ross Padluck, Ike Kligerman Barkley Interior Design: Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley Home Builder: Jim Cooley, Cooley Contracting Landscape Architecture: Kristin Trojanowski, KTLA-Designs Happy Returns A Lake Michigan abode brings a family back to the shore to create memories for the next generation. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICHARD POWERS

That’s not to say this is a faithful historical recreation. Although its shake roof, paneled walls and rustic wooden beams make the home seem, as Padluck says, “a bit old fashioned,” the open floor plan, low-maintenance materials and a bank of oversize triple-hung windows speak to modern family life. The large casements are a perfect example of the dwelling’s traditionwith-a-twist nature. Based on architecture commonly found in 1800s-era residences, these supersize windows stretch from the living room’s floor to its ceiling, acting as portals to the rear terrace and landscape designed by Trojanowski. “The windows are one of the big design moves in the house,” Padluck notes. “They are roughly 11 feet tall by 5 feet wide, and the middle sash frames the amazing lake views.”

With the evocative character of remembered design and the sound of the wind in the trees on the wooded site, it seems like the man-made and natural environs are in conspiracy to evoke comfort. Again, this isn’t happenstance. “In this residence, there’s a dialogue between the interior and the exterior, and the home flows seamlessly between both,” Ike says. “Intimate is the key word—it’s easy to relax here.”

To create it, the team channeled a broad array of inspirations, including late 19 th- and early 20 th-century Maine beach retreats by architect John Calvin Stevens as well as Northern California Arts and Crafts dwellings by Bernard Maybeck. They also referenced global motifs with elements such as balusters reminiscent of those featured in Swiss chalets, and a live-edge dining table and powder room vanity that hark to traditional Japanese decorative arts. “There is a diversity of cultures here that display patterns from northern climes,” Ike says. “In particular, the house has a Japanese sensibility, where you see a materiality that comes from mixing found and older objects with new elements.”

The family, who commissioned Padluck, architect John Ike, designer Mia Jung, general contractor Jim Cooley and landscape architect Kristin Trojanowski, started the project with fond memories and an awe-inspiring site. “The husband’s family is from the area, and he spent many summers on the shores of Lake Michigan,” Ike says. “He lives on the East Coast now, but he and his wife wanted a gathering place to recreate that early experience.” While the views of the lake are grand, the vision was to build a residence as alluring and approachable as a shaded hammock on a hot summer’s day. “The couple was looking for a home that was more cottage-like than pretentious,” Padluck says. “They pictured something casual and inviting.”

LUXESOURCE.COM274

T here’s something delightfully familiar about this home perched on a rugged cliff over Lake Michigan. Although the association can be hard to identify precisely, its darkshingled exterior and steeply pitched roofline conjure the kind of warm feelings engendered by a favorite relative’s house or a rambling abode from a storybook. But make no mistake, the charm of this vacation retreat isn’t a happy accident— it’s by design. “The form appears friendly, almost recognizable,” says architect Ross Padluck. “We took elements of a beloved childhood dwelling and elevated them for modern living.”

That liquid landscape was the basis for Jung’s interiors. “When I’m working on a project in Nantucket, I use soft hues drawn from the gray and green blues I see in the waves there,” she says. “But in Lake Michigan, the water’s color is much deeper and more complex.” It is, as Padluck notes, a brilliant shade that matches the sky. Saturated and clear blues show up in everything from the patterned upholstery on the living room’s wingback chair to the kitchen cabinets, lending the spaces a serene nature. “What you see out the window is something you want to bring inside,” the designer notes. Gazing at the abode’s surroundings is an easy thing to do, thanks to the front-row seats Jung created. Most of the windows have a comfortable perch beside them, from the banquette in the dining room (designed as a place for kids to eat during gatherings) to a pair of plush armchairs in the primary suite. “The architects did an amazing job of siting this house, and from every part of it you see the water,” Jung says. “I gave the family great places to take it in—there’s always a place to sit down and just chill.”

Oak beams define the living area of a Lake Michigan abode. The walls are coated in Benjamin Moore’s Dune White, providing a quiet backdrop for a custom sectional by TL.Henry Upholstery and a coffee table by André Joyau. Underfoot is a Spart Design area rug.

Architect Ross Padluck calls the triple-hung windows one of the home’s “big design moves.” A wingback chair and ottoman by TL.Henry Upholstery and a Peg Woodworking bench provide places to savor the landscape. Outside, tables and chairs by Teak Warehouse make dining alfresco a pleasure.

CHARM Asked to describe his firm’s home, Bergmann paints an enchanting picture. “We are in Lake Forest near the north end of the North Shore. The location is quite accessible to the surrounding area and the highway for jobs further afield in Wisconsin and Michigan, and we have historically had many Lake Forest clients, so it seemed a natural move. Our company design studio and office are in a historic coach house from an old gentleman’s farm. Over the past 12 years, we have created display gardens and renovated the David Adler-designed buildings on the property.”

“I feel that Chicago design is always a cross section of what we see nationally interpreted with a midwestern sensibility and, often, practicality.”

Being a Chicago native who has long been enveloped in the design industry through his passion for landscape architecture, Craig Bergmann has a unique perspective on local trends and sentiments.

INSPIRATION

“Current modern designs are welcome, since this area is so staunchly set with tradition,” he says. “I feel the best design styles today are those that juxtapose the modern classics and art with comfort and elegance. And, it’s so n ice to see color being used again. As a garden designer, I never understood everything neutral. In our world, that would all be green; there is so much more to offer if color blending is practiced.” The truth of what he says is evident in the work of his firm, which creates gardens where there is no shortage of vibrant hues and palettes diverse in color and species. Its design approaches range greatly, too. Formal or naturalized, contemporary or traditional, estate or urban—the CBLD team does it all.

“Chicagoans stay true to the design of the city by bringing it into their homes,” Tracey says. And indeed, even top brands are helping them to do just that. “A unique thing we have seen is the homage to Chicago architect Frank Lloyd Wright by Brizo. They released a line that follows his unique taste, and it is a brilliant combination of plumbing and artistic design.”

• Beneath the skyline: Hands down, Millennium Park should be a newcomer’s first stop. The iconic Bean posed against the idyllic skyline is a site to behold. It also houses some of Chicago’s most sought-after exhibits. And, it is a jump away from some of the city’s most famous museums and the must-see Grant Park.

For many who grew up in Chicago, a sentiment is shared: it will always be home. A vibrant cultural landscape, a gorgeous natural one, an iconic skyline, endless delicious restaurants to visit, that Midwestern charm in most everyone—whatever the reason, the Windy City seems to make one never want to leave. Such is the case for Mack Tracey, branch manager at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Chicago. Born and raised in the western suburbs, he now resides in Glen Ellyn, where he enjoys the eateries, bars and shops within walking distance. But when he isn’t embracing the things to do, he is working with homeowners and some of the area’s top design pros to specify the perfect fixtures and finishes for the kitchen, bath and more. He shares insight on the region’s leanings: “Chicago is shifting away from the wave of modern hard lines seen over the past few years. We are seeing more details, textures and a fondness for mixed metals.”

Asked to discuss how Chicago is an asset to her work, Parker points to the creatives and craftspeople it entices. “We do a large majority of our work with local artisans, from upholsterers and millworkers to fine artists,” she says. “I believe strongly in supporting local talent and have formed incredibly close relationships with many artists and creative individuals over the past 16 years. It also adds great value to our clients, as they save money and time on shipping and e nd up with something so unique.”

LOCAL OR BUST

“Our skyline is one of the prettiest in the world. The history and mix of styles throughout our architecture is impressive.”

Photography Dustin Halleck Switzerland, Hong Kong, London—such were the vibrant places where Gemma Parker was raised as a child. Michigan, too, was on that list, and Chicago weekend trips made it the standout favorite in Parker’s mind. “It was important to me to land in a city where there is diversity, cultural interest, a legacy of great architecture and beauty all around, and I couldn’t get my mind off of Chicago,” she shares. “So, 16 years ago, I moved back from London, and my husband and I settled in.” Today, she operates Gemma Parker Design out of Petoskey, Michigan, and River North in downtown Chicago. The latter is her primary home base, about which she says: “Being in the middle of the hustle and bustle feeds my city girl soul, and being steps away from the beautiful lakefront feeds my inspiration! Not to mention, there are some seriously heavy hitters on our scene; it’s inspiring to be around.”

“I love being by the water,” Parker says. “That was one of the big draws about Chicago when we were deciding on our ‘forever home.’ It is why we love spending time in Northern Michigan, too. As a mom, my life is very focused on my kids outside of work, and you will always find us walking the city, near the lake and parks on the weekends!”

“I believe our architectural heritage and rebuilding after the fire still inspires and impacts Chicago architecture and design,” Bolger says. “When you think about the noted visionaries who found Chicago an influential place of work, from Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and David Adler, to Daniel Burnham, Helmut Jahn and Jeanne Gang, it is truly incredible. We are undeniably a very design-centric city, with bountiful inspiration at every turn.”

“Chicago is growing and thriving, with a consistent appreciation for the importance of good design.”

• Spots for inspo: Preston Bradley Hall, The Rookery, Art Institute Chicago, the lakefront and strolling along Astor Street and State Parkway Asked to share which Chicago buildings most inspire her, Leah Bolger replies: “The list is exhaustive! I can’t name them all, but Preston Bradley Hall and The Rookery are up there.” As a native of the city, which she calls “a wonderful big ‘little’ town,” she has had plenty of time to consider what she loves about its iconic architectural marvels. She also had the chance to decide precisely where she wanted to plant her own roots, and the answer was North Shore. “I moved here when I had my first child and was teaching at Harrington College of Design,” she shares. “I’m in Winnetka, and it is a wonderful place to raise children while maintaining proximity to the city.” It has also proven the perfect home base for her firm, Leah Bolger Design. “The state of design in Chicago has long been strong and rich,” Bolger says. “We have tremendous resources here, not only through theMART, but also with iconic brands like MillerKnoll.” leahbdesign
