MODERN ARCHES

“I’m noticing that arches are being used

ways. I consider arches to be fairly traditional, but there seems to be a movement toward arches in a more modern

less ornate detailing and subtle touches. They are being featured in door frames (with a change, thank goodness,

the Shaker style) and in the legs of tables and chairs.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTISAN

“In many areas of decoration, I’m finding that there is a greater emphasis on the idea of handmade, heritage-quality goods. Whether it be a hand-thrown ceramic lamp or woven rattan furnishings crafted in a family-owned workshop—a story dedicated to the pieces collected for a home is more important than ever. To

one’s home with meaningful items is gratifying.”

GEOMETRY LESSON

“The sculptor in me is excited to see a resurgence of basic shapes— triangle lampshades, oversize circle pendants and exaggerated box upholstery. Adding simple shapes to any space provides instant chic and a subtle nod back to beloved design “OGs” like David Hicks, Albert Hadley and Angelo Donghia. Returning to a classic form means you can work it in any space or aesthetic.”

All’s Well

I’m writing this letter early on a Friday morning after completing a 10-minute meditation on my Calm app about building consistency. It’s just one component of my daily wellness practice, along with long evening walks, a plant-based diet and an ongoing edit of our home’s interior to make it more regenerative.

Coming out of the pandemic, we have a heightened awareness of the influence that our homes can have on our well-being and the broader environment. At Luxe, we’re taking a leadership role by engaging in this conversation with our readers as well as the greater design community. From conscious landscaping to wellness retreats and meditation rooms, you’ll find the theme woven throughout this issue. We also recently hosted our firstever Living Well summit in Los Angeles featuring a captivating lineup of speakers who inspired and educated our audience with topics ranging from the power of the downstate to universal rules about how to design with intention. I encourage you to learn more by tuning into our new wellness-focused channel, Wellness by Design, launching soon on designtvbysandow.com

PARK & OAK COLLECTED

Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto—co-founders of interior design studio Park & Oak—have opened Park & Oak Collected, a new home accessories and furnishings boutique in Glen Ellyn that will soon expand to include a furniture and kitchen showroom, complete with a cocktail bar. “Our studio was down the street,” DiSanto says. “We needed more space, but this ended up being way more ambitious than our original plans.” The storefront was originally a car dealership before being subdivided into three businesses, including a bar. The landlord wanted to reunite the spaces and open it up to allow in

more light, which made it the perfect place for Park & Oak’s studio and boutique. Their plans quickly expanded—as these things tend to do—to fit the luxurious amount of space they were offered. “We weren’t originally going to have a bar, but it’s there and it’s beautiful, so there will be a cocktail bar,” DiSanto says. “There’s space for furniture and a full kitchen, so it becomes a whole experience for visitors.” In addition to serving their design and retail clients, DiSanto notes that, once it’s fully operational, Park & Oak Collected will be an ideal event space—a welcome addition to downtown Glen Ellyn. pocollected.com

INSPIRING MIND

In the design world, the lack of diversity is a known problem. Unwilling to accept that the industry couldn’t change or be more welcoming to people of color, Executive Vice President and CEO of the International Interior Design Association Cheryl Durst launched a pipeline program, Design Your World, that targets high school students in underserved communities. iida.org

Where did Design Your World come from? It’s a personal passion of mine, as a woman of color, to introduce the joy and viability of a career in design to young people. DYW is geared to shift the makeup of the industry by introducing design to students in the BIPOC community. We just celebrated the completion of the second Chicago iteration and launched in the Miami market this past summer.

Where do you see the program going? Our existing locations will continue to host new groups of students annually as other regional programs take flight.

How else can the design community support diversity and upcoming talent? In addition to education, it’s about empathizing with how the world shifting has impacted expectations, culture and human design. It’s about creating ongoing opportunities that encourage the next generation.

TRANSFORMATION

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL CHICAGO

The Four Seasons Hotel Chicago has dramatically reimagined its public spaces and guest rooms. Richard Riveire of Rottet Studio, the architectural firm responsible for the transformation, credits the cityscape as inspiration for the design and notes that his firm conceptualized the city’s trees and flowers into a somewhat surreal yet elegant garden.“The underlying inspiration for the lobby was to bring an element of surprise and delight to guests as they stepped out of the elevator,” Riveire says. “We wanted their first impression to be grand and welcoming.” The renovation also included the addition of globally inspired restaurant, Adorn, helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef Jonathon Sawyer. The refresh extended beyond the public spaces and into the guest rooms and suites—including the 2,700-square-foot Presidential Suite—so they look as luxe and modern as one would expect of a hotel just steps from the Magnificent Mile. fourseasons.com/Chicago

MEET THE MAKER

BETH KAMHI

A lifelong creator and maker, Beth Kamhi found her current medium by combining her backgrounds in fiber, fashion and interior design.

“I got hold of some industrial ball chain and started using it as a textile, weaving and draping it,” she says. “Soon I was creating pieces that looked like fiber art from the ’70s—they’re very tactile.”

Luxe sat down with Kamhi to learn about her inspiration and what it’s like to work with the heavy metal material. @beth_kamhi_artist

Where do you find inspiration?

I frequently collaborate with art consultants, architects and designers. We look at a space and its parameters, which helps determine weight, size, scale and material. I just finished a recent commission for the U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara, Mexico. It’s a brand-new building, and I made my largest piece to date to fill the volume.

Tell us about that commission It’s 16-by-8-by-10 feet, so it’s big but airy. I’ve made smaller pieces that hang from the ceiling, but this project amped it up.

What do you love about industrial ball chain? Not how heavy it is! I have works that are 75 pounds, but I do love the versatility. Some of my pieces reference jewelry, others textiles. I’ve been working with it for almost 14 years—I’ve tried other mediums, but they don’t feel authentic.

What’s next? I have three pieces going into the newly renovated Bernard’s in the Waldorf Astoria Chicago. They have an elegant, elongated look. I think it’s going to be a terrific addition to the decor.

STATE OF THE ART

THESE THREE NONTRADITIONAL GALLERY SPACES ARE BREAKING THE WHITE-BOX MOLD.

EPIPHANY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

After seeing the historic spot where they were married sit empty for years, David Chase and Kimberly Rachal decided to buy the Church of the Epiphany and convert it into a multiuse music and event space. Revitalized as the Epiphany Center for the Arts, the 42,000-square-foot West Loop campus offers a multitude of spaces in which to view art. “It’s that sense of discovery that makes Epiphany so cool,” says Aaron Baker, director of art and programming. “Our exhibitions have a dedicated following, but often they are enjoyed by people visiting Epiphany for a concert or private event who see the art as they walk by.” epiphanychi.com

ALMA ART AND INTERIORS

In a brilliant partnership, Gosia Korsakowski of Architectural Anarchy and K imberly Oliva of Oliva Gallery have combined forces to create Alma Art and Interiors. Located in a soaring loft space in west Bridgeport, this new venture presents large-scale exhibitions that place sculptures and wall art into vignettes with furnishings and accessories. “We show art in a way that people aren’t afraid to come and talk about the pieces,” Korsakowski says. “We set it up like it’s a collector’s home and mix artists together.” The duo’s background makes perfect sense for this venture—Korsakowski specializes in setting up vignettes for designers at trade shows while Oliva runs her own art gallery. After two successful exhibits, the duo is presenting an even more ambitious show this season that not only inc ludes the trademark vignettes and art but will also have special programming, including a performance piece by dancer Irene Hsiao on November 18 and 20. olivagallery.com/alma

ESMÉ

In August 2021, Chef Jenner Tomaska and Katrina Bravo opened the much-acclaimed restaurant Esmé and its cocktail-focused counterpart, Bar Esmé, in Lincoln Park. The couple knew from the beginning that they wanted to engage with artisans, so Bravo proposed treating the walls as a sort of gallery, with all the works for sale and the profits going directly to the artist. Tomaska, who was already working with ceramicists on the restaurant’s serving pieces, enthusiastically agreed that the art—like the menu— should change seasonally. Since its inception, the restaurant has featured local artists like Amanda Rivera and Paul Octavious, with Amanda Love’s book spine-inspired pieces on display through January. “We were looking for community,” Bravo says. “It makes us happy that someone can eat a meal in essentially an art gallery and maybe buy something beautiful for their home.” esmechicago.com

AS WATER BECOMES INCREASINGLY PRECIOUS, LANDSC APE DESIGNERS OFFER GUIDANCE—AND HOPE—FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL DROUGHT-TOLERANT GARDENS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

With decades of experience gardening through droughts, landscape designers across the West Coast have themselves become a precious resource. Their collected insights and ideas offer a path forward that reduces water consumption and aides in the overall improvement of our environment. From big changes to concepts as simple as using native plants, the West’s take on waterwise gardening—the practice of selecting plants that require less irrigation—is a wellspring of inspiration.

Many in the industry agree that a first step is changing our mindset: Waterwise doesn’t mean unattractive landscapes. And outdated language like xeriscaping (a term coined by Denver’s Department of Water in the 1980’s) hasen’t helped win anyone over. Landscape designers today are moving the conversation beyond gravel and cacti and showing just how inviting waterwise gardens can be. “People are getting into it now,” says Charlie Ray of The Green Room Collaborative in Phoenix. “They’re seeing how a dynamic native garden adds to the atmosphere

of their home.” Montecito Landscape’s Lisa Cullen has similarly shifted the dialogue with clients. “Nobody wants to do something because they have to,” explains the California-based organic gardener. “Rather than selling waterwise, we focus on the benefits and how pretty it can be.”

“We’ve overwatered environments for decades because of inappropriate material choices,” continues Ray, who carefully considers which flora and fauna to use for each project and often starts by adding shade trees, which create a micro-climate under their canopy. “Layer shrubs, massed for drifts of color and texture, and then lots of wildflowers—you’ll see the birds and butterflies come right in,” he adds.

For Forestoration’s David Noftsinger there is such joy in seeing blanket flowers grow wild in nearby Glacier National Park, and equally happily in his own garden. “Planting natives helps develop a sense of place and an appreciation for the bounty of your area,” explains Noftsinger, who recommends homeowners familiarize themselves with natives unique to their state. Visiting

local botanical gardens for inspiration can also be helpful. “Become a member, go to workshops, volunteer—they’re a key resource for local communities,” says Ray.

All in all, the approach to gardening and landscaping happening on a local level along the West Coast can be replicated across the country. And as Noftsinger believes, “the more pieces we put back together, and incorporate what’s supposed to be there, the more change we’ll see— every bit you can do is beneficial.”

Grounding Approach

VERA ICONICA ARCHITECTURE’S VERONICA SCHREIBEIS SMITH BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.

I like to say we design experiences and architecture happens to be our medium. Whether you call it wellness architecture or something different, what we’re seeking to do—not just with every project, but with every space—is nurture the soul, optimize people’s lives and elevate the human experience. Architecture is the practice of creating your surroundings and it can influence everything from an inhabitant’s emotions and cognitive performance to relationships and the ways in which we gather and interact. Did you know we spend 90 percent of our time indoors? How we sculpt and model that

interior really impacts every single part of our lives.

Buildings are powerful. There have been neuroscientific studies done where EKGs are performed on people who are then taken into unique buildings like a temple, Grand Central Station or the Salk Institute. Their frontal lobe actually shuts down once inside. This is what happens in meditation, when you enter a non-dualistic or flow state, which is your highest level of being. So people who can tap into this and work from their flow state are often high-performing businesspeople, musicians or creatives— they feel super productive and happy. I try to create spaces that support how people want to operate and are tailored to their

inhabitants in every way because when homes have a proportional or harmonic resonance, you will ultimately feel better.

At the end of the day, humans are a part of nature and if we fight that or try to shut it out, we end up hurting ourselves. I make sure that natural materials and plenty of light are present in every project. Using local resources also creates a sense of culture, belonging and identity which is really important to our existence. But everything comes back to being in harmony with nature and taking care of our planet. veraiconica.com

FROM CALIFORNIA TO THE CATSKILLS, THESE NEW HIGH-DESIGN DESTINATIONS ARE AIMED AT IMMERSIVE WELL-BEING.

If the latest crop of wellness hotels, retreats and fitness clubs across the U.S. have anything in common, it’s that exactly none of them adhere to the ubiquitous spa aesthetic of recent decades—dependably soothing but often dull. The future of luxury destinations takes a more full-bodied approach and looks

to improve your physical, emotional and spiritual states through elevated experiences and sophisticated spaces. From luxe resorts and nature-focused bootcamp-style getaways to exclusive, über-stylish gyms, these wellness hot spots will have you longing to pack your bags and take a deep exhale upon arrival.

RESET Telluride, Colorado

The rugged San Juan Mountains were undeniably influential for architect and designer Stephanie Malsed when creating the interior scheme for Reset’s wellness center, the hub of an ultra-luxe, intensive nature-focused retreat in Colorado. The state-of-the-art facility for sweating, recovering and mindfulness practice harnesses the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—and draws in colors from the outdoors, namely pine green and warm pink tones from alpenglow. Guests engage in guided half-day treks and self-care rituals surrounded by nature or in the comfort of the wellness center. At the end of the day, retreat to a private section of the Madeline Hotel & Residences with amenities that include algae-infused slippers, a hydration bar and customized aromatherapy. resettelluride.com

THE RANCH Hudson Valley, New York

The Ranch, a results-oriented fitness retreat, which began in Malibu in 2010, is ready for its East Coast debut after taking over the legendary 200-acre Table Rock Estate in upstate New York. Designer Steven Gambrel oversaw the interior and historical restoration of the 1902 structure, devising a total transformation of its rooms, including the former ballroom reimagined as a gym for yoga, meditation and fitness sessions. Guests can kick off their morning with hikes through nearby Ringwood and Harriman State Park. Organic, plant-based meals, naps and daily massages are additional hallmarks of the idyllic but intense regiment. theranchmalibu.com

SENSEI PORCUPINE CREEK Rancho Mirage, California

A sense of calm and Japanese Zen penetrates the light-filled 22-room and -villa Sensei Porcupine Creek. A sister property to Lawrence Ellison and Dr. David Agus’ Sensei Lanai in Hawaii, the newest location promises guests a similarly bespoke journey toward living healthier, longer lives. Ellison oversaw all design details as a 230-acre private estate in the Santa Rosa Mountain foothills was converted into the ultimate wellness destination offering patrons three pathways to follow: Move, Nourish and Rest. The sunny and lush property—complete with gardens, a lagoon pool, golf fairways and hiking trails—is as much a part of the recipe for well-being as the Sensei Guide-led practices and treatments (think Abhyanga four-handed massage), plus five-star cuisine at Sensei by Nobu. sensei.com

HEIMAT Los Angeles, California

This fitness and wellness concept club, located in a refurbished 1930s industrial building in Los Angeles, is the future for the gym-going, Soho House-belonging, health-conscious set. The members-only outpost boasts stained glass panels dividing custom strength machines from a studio of specially designed Pilates reformers. The light-filled cardio area, complete with a cacti garden, resembles a chic hotel lobby while the locker rooms, conceived by Germany-based design studio Inco Media, are fitted with marble, hand-crafted wood paneling and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybeds. Upstairs, famed architect and designer Martin Brudnizki enriched the interiors of Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina’s Mother Tongue restaurant, which lives alongside a sparkling pool and exuberant co-working space awash in yellow. heimat.com

Wellness in the Woods

A LUXURIOUS MONTANA RESORT PROVIDES NATURE FOR NURTURE.

It turns out that you can get pretty close to nirvana by taking a mindfulness walk. I’ve recently leaned into the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who encouraged the practice of mindful walking. Yet, to truly deepen the connection, one needs to be in a place where the magical properties of wellness can take hold. For me, that was on a trip to The Green O.

Nestled into a quiet ponderosa pine forest hillside, the resort sits on 37,000 sweeping acres outside of Missoula, Montana, and envelopes visitors like a soft hug. One part luxury ranch and two parts nature immersion for body and soul, the all-inclusive, adults-only property is an exclusive assemblage of 12 design-forward, glass-boxed villas constructed with sustainable principles that dot the land like works of sculptural art. Of all the semi-secluded “haus” designs, my favorite was Tree Haus, which sits on stilts rising 23-feet above ground and features a spiral staircase running through its three-story spine. I enjoyed lavish comforts sheltered inside while simultaneously immersed in the panoramic landscape, glimpsed through towering floor-to-ceiling windows that provided views of wildlife and a hint of warm twinkling lights from Green Hauses beyond.

Among The Green O’s 12 rustic-yet-refined accommodations is Tree Haus, which sits on stilts offering an elevated view of the surrounding landscape.

This communal-like setting is crowned by Social Haus, the property’s heart center that functions as dining room, bar and central gathering spot. Architect and designer Kristen Becker of Seattle-based Mutuus Studio worked alongside interior designer and executive co-owner Nadine Lipson to conceive interiors that cast a smoky Modernism vibe with cozy campfire-style seating, leafy green hues and shou sugi ban wood reflective of the woodland surroundings. The Michelin-worthy culinary experience, led by executive chef Brandon Cunningham, impresses with nightly curated nine-course tasting menus, gourmet wood-fired pizzas available for delivery to your private hot tub, and artful delights by James Beard-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson. It could well be that her rosé-soaked rhubarb cake and dark chocolate brown tart with conifer green gelato ice cream were all the wellness I needed!

I spent my days learning how to flyfish on the Blackfoot River accompanied by a patient guide; riding ATVs through sprawling pastures; stopping off at the equestrian center for a bit of horse therapy and luxuriating in a mineral mud bath at the spa. But the most profound part of my stay was the stillness of early morning strolls in the woods, practicing mindful breathing and walking— and connecting to the wonders of the earth. thegreeno.com

rich craft traditions of India are at the heart of Tantuvi, a rug company founded by former fashion designer Arati Rao in 2015. The Malachite Rug, shown here, is made by artisans in Rajasthan using reclaimed silk remnants collected from the sari industry. SMART STYLE

When it came to her own kitchen in the greater New York City area, French-born, Manhattan-based interior designer Laurence Carr designed the space to serve as a central wellness area for her family of five. “My husband and I have three teenagers, and this is a place where we can work, socialize and cook together,” explains Carr, who collaborated with architect Jordan Rosenberg to conceive the contemporary home. “Biophilia, plenty of natural light and sustainability were also important considerations. There are large windows that provide a connection to the garden, and the

amount of light entering the space is important in minimizing the electricity and lighting that’s necessary.” Carr kept the palette clean and simple, employing a mix of dark gray and cream cabinetry, Calacatta marble and wood accents. “Cream is much softer than white, and the gray lends a contemporary touch,” says the designer. To create a look that’s seamless and streamlined, Carr paneled many of the appliances and even included a hidden door—made to look like one of the cabinets— that leads to a walk-in pantry. “The space feels timeless yet modern.” laurencecarr.com

CALMING FORCE

Claire Staszak of the Chicago firm Centered by Design is known for what she calls a holistic approach, combining her love of interiors with a passion for wellness (she is also a certified yoga instructor). So, it’s no surprise that when she was tasked with the renovation of a 1930s Colonial north of Chicago, she whipped up a kitchen for a young family that feels calm, balanced and serene. Staszak was limited to working within the kitchen’s existing footprint, however she was able to make a few key changes—including closing off an opening to the dining room, removing a window to add symmetry and adding a larger window to bring in more light—that make all the difference. “In doing this, we were able to fit in everything we wanted, including a large island and a coffee bar,” notes the designer. “The clients wanted something fresh and beautiful with a mix of Southern charm and the feel of a French bistro.” With that in mind, Staszak installed custom cabinetry from her firm’s in-house line in a light taupe shade, cafe-inspired lighting, natural wood accents and periwinkle backsplash tile from Ann Sacks. “Custom cabinetry provides the opportunity for a variety of details tailored to the homeowners’

needs, such as arched doors and open shelving,” Staszak explains. With the clients being avid cooks and entertainers, storage was a major focus. The designer incorporated hidden compartments for appliances, bakeware and utensils, while niches flanking the range hold cooking essentials such as oils and spices. Meanwhile, easy-to-clean quartz surfaces lend durability to the hardworking space. “Health and well-being are important to this couple, and I really tried to be a calm and grounding presence during the renovation process,” Staszak says. “My job is always to take the stress off my clients, make the process feel like a true collaboration, and channel a Zen attitude.” Most importantly, adds the designer, “a space doesn’t have to be boring in order to feel balanced.” centeredbydesign.com

NATURAL INSTINCT

When Los Angeles−based decorator Mandy Cheng set eyes on the magical treetop views from this Woodland Hills kitchen—which sits three stories above the ground thanks to the home’s hillside setting—it became clear that nature should take center stage in this renovation. “The view inspired the design and dictated the palette,” Cheng explains. “I wanted to bring the trees in and tie the design to the outdoors.” Cheng chose a combination of white oak upper cabinets and open shelving, which recalls oak trees outside, and green to channel the leaves. “When colors are consistent between indoors and out it gives the illusion of more space,” Cheng notes. Furthermore, the designer installed windowed cabinetry that not only references the residence’s Craftsman style, but “maintains that open, airy quality. We wanted to keep the cabinetry from feeling too heavy.” Low-maintenance quartz countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures that will develop a patina over time and a “natural-looking” textured tile backsplash round out the scheme. To address the client’s need for additional storage, Cheng installed custom drawers for cooking utensils, a nook for storing paper towels and wooden crates to hold potatoes and onions. “The previous layout discouraged cooking and eating well because it didn’t function properly,” Cheng says. “Now it feels clean, calm and inviting.” mandychengdesign.com

Keep the Peace

WELLNESS ROOMS HAVE EVOLVED FROM AMENITY TO NECESSITY.

As our world grows increasingly complex and connected, the need for places to get away from it all grows too. From Luxe’s bird’s eye view, seeking escape doesn’t necessarily mean looking outside the confines of home— quite the opposite, in fact. Take this Glendora, California, meditation room by designer Norm Wogan, which perfectly illustrates today’s artistic, deeply considered approach to at-home escapism. May these magical wellness spaces, from Brooklyn to Hawaii’s Big Island, inspire you to create your own slice of sanctuary.

Designer Norm Wogan scoured local Indian and Moroccan shops for unique artifacts—including an antique altar and aged copper pendants—to outfit his client’s Glendora, California, healing and meditation room. wogandesign.com

TAKE PAUSE

“My husband and I took meditation classes years ago. Afterwards, we set the intention to do a daily 20-minute meditation in the morning and another in the afternoon,” shares designer Lisa Kahn. For Kahn, maintaining a morning practice was easy. An afternoon practice amidst the activity of office life was another story—so she crafted a meditation room in her Naples, Florida, headquarters. To encourage

midday respite, the designer wrapped the space in a Kravet raffia, adding comfortable pillows in a HomArt batik fabric and live-edge wood stands to display healing objects. “We believe meditation is an important element of the day to gather a sense of self when the bustle feels all-consuming,” she says. “It helps us stay connected to our larger purpose for being here.” lisakahndesigns.com

RECHARGING STATION

When hired by clients with an appreciation for the Japanese bathing ritual of a shower to cleanse the body followed by a bath to cleanse the soul, designer Lindsay Anyon Brier saw a unique opportunity for an exterior wellness space. Specifically, when she viewed their Piedmont, California, home’s deck, set conveniently off a gym, she envisioned a soaking tub. In collaboration with Berkeley Heat, she conceived a cedar hot tub seemingly dropped within the tree line. Underscoring the home’s commitment to sustainability, the creation boasts a drainage feature in lieu of chemical maintenance. (Wastewater is then used to irrigate the property.) Adding a touch of sparkle to the scene, decorative screens with a Moroccan motif “create a sense of privacy and intimacy while focusing the eye on views of San Francisco Bay,” notes the designer. anyondesign.com

HEAVEN SENT

An enchanting yet derelict Hawaii Island property brought together the team of designer Marion Philpotts-Miller, architect Paige Wilburn and landscape designer David Tamura. Together, they restored the home’s old growth teak ceilings and beams, infused light and flow throughout the interiors and reimagined the grounds, whose pièce de résistance is an entry courtyard designed for peaceful repose. A lanai illuminated by vintage Japanese lanterns and outfitted with an antique bench flanked by bronze Burmese guardians offers the homeowners a particularly contemplative space to enjoy the sights and sounds of several water features. Not the least of which is a hidden shower garden tucked behind a retractable teak screen. philpotts.net

DREAMING IN COLOR

Leave it to designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to kick any notions that neutral and wellness must walk hand-in-hand to the curb. Exhibit A: This exuberant massage room set high on a cliff in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Bullard confidently swathed the space in Benjamin Moore’s Covington Blue, a languid, ocean-green tone that plays to the Sea of Cortez beyond the windows. A medley of natural woven sisal and abaca furnishings—all nods to indigenous Mexican arts and crafts—join a 1970s painting scored at an antique shop in Mexico City, which Bullard admits is his favorite element of the room. “The vibrancy holds you captive whilst still maintaining calmness due to its abstract nature and ear thy pigments,” he explains, adding, “it has a distinct and welcoming warmth reminiscent of Cabo’s famous sunsets.”

INNER SANCTUM

When designer Cheryl Settino Mosher’s clients tasked her with crafting a prayer room within their Brooklyn apartment, she did her research first. For visual inspiration, Mosher referenced Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament, looking to motifs of ancient civilizations.

Ultimately, she landed on a quartet of Schumacher wallpapers in sepia tones, which were deconstructed then put together in a bespoke pattern intended to evoke the feel of a sacred space modernized for contemporary

living. Meanwhile, for the layout, she used a Qibla compass to place the family’s beloved prayer rug directed toward the Kaaba. Bathed in diffuse sunlight, the room, with its cozy, velvet-covered divan, has become a reading room as well as a place for worship. “It’s an area to recharge,” says Mosher. “Now more than ever, we need these spaces. Whether you have a large home or an apartment, you have to make time to sit and find quiet—whatever that means for you.” brooklyn.studio

ICONS + INNOVATORS

Within any industry, profession or creative community, there are icons and there are innovators. Those in the first group—the icons—have a storied history and abiding level of expertise that has placed them at the very top of their field. While the second—the innovators—are discovering new ideas and ways of working that bring energy and ingenuity to their craft. And an important point not to be overlooked is that in many instances icons and innovators are one and the same. In this special section, Luxe Interiors + Design celebrates these enduring leaders and forward-thinking visionaries whose commitment to what they do and the people they do it for is both far-reaching and long-lasting.

NO STONE UNTURNED

“Our goal every day is to make dreams reality and find the most perfect stones from all over the world,” says Schloemer. Here are just a few examples of the team’s ingenuity:

• For a 23-slab marble bathroom, the chosen material of Italian origin was successfully sourced—out of Greece.

• The desired stone from a longextinct quarry was found for a 36-inch vanity. “Truly, there isn’t anything we can’t make happen,” says Schloemer.

ON WORKING WITH ICONS

Schloemer is humbled to be a part of the design community and to work with the giants of the trade. “To think we have the luxury to work with them on their unbelievable projects throughout the country has been—to say the least—the most unreal feeling.”

After working in the stone industry for more than 15 years, Kristin C. Schloemer is uniquely aware of the exciting direction in which it’s heading. A fresh approach to material selection is truly changing things in the world of natural stone. As the owner of Calia, she sees her role as ensuring her growing team has all the tools they need. And as for the company, expansion is top of mind.

“Currently the goal for Calia is to grow our collection of unique rare materials, as well as to make the natural stone selection process more seamless and to serve as a go-to knowledge resource,” she says. Schloemer would like to broaden the firm’s reach with additional locations to better service designers. As for the future of design? She notes, “This industry is evolving every day, and if I was to narrow it down to my specific industry, we are on fast-forward.”

Top Titled “Fairfax,” this space, the brainchild of designer Summer Thornton and stone stylist Meghan Doka, showcases the beauty of stone.

Key to being a true innovator is the ability to see possibility and opportunity in a brand new area—to envision something completely unique in an unexplored space. Michael Miller, founder of Centaur Interiors, says that to be an innovator is to have “creative vision, plus a deep commitment to succeed at the highest level.” He adds, “It’s a relentless pursuit of a perfection that cannot be obtained.” Miller has been transforming industries for over a decade, first with Centaur Interiors and then with the Apollo art platform. Founded in 2009, Centaur transformed the residential design and build market in Chicago by offering a full range of design, construction, furnishing and art procurement services—all in one firm. And Miller has innovated in the digital art space by creating Apollo, an art platform that connects artists and consumers and allows anyone to become a collector of digital art.

POINT OF DISTINCTION

Miller says: “Designing and building a home is a deeply personal journey. Centaur Interiors begins with an understanding of a client’s lifestyle, personality, aesthetics and goals and lets the client be as hands-on or hands-off as they desire. We have top-tier design and technology, but it’s our process that sets us apart from the others.”

LAUNCH OF APOLLO

Apollo was first installed in the CI showroom and is now global. Miller says: “Apollo’s in-house designers create visuals for residential, business, travel and hospitality spaces. The technology provides access to exclusive art for every person and display. The uses are endless.”

When Brian Culliton and Tony Quinn started their company in 2004, they decided to make communication a top priority when breaking ground for their clients. Culliton says that their firm wanted to “focus on a team approach with the client.” He continues: “We developed a system over the years that walks the client through every step of developing a comprehensive landscape without making it overwhelming—while simultaneously ensuring the client understands what they are getting.” The end result is that clients feel good about their landscaping cost and benefit. Quinn says, “Our job is to work with clients from the start so they truly know what we are creating for them. We want them highly involved throughout the entire process, and we facilitate everything with a step-by-step approach.”

DREAM DESIGNS

The team loves creating beautiful dreams. Culliton says: “Our designs are meant to create an unexpected, special feeling for clients—a magical place. For us, it is more about cohesively bringing the site together to create a moment of awe. It’s not about a backyard patio, a fire feature, a pool, a foundation planting. It’s about how we create that overall garden experience.”

MORE IS MORE

Today’s landscape trends are very maximalist. Quinn shares the latest trends the firm has been seeing. “Clients want everything today: Pergolas with automated awnings and heaters, a hot tub or pool, outdoor kitchens, a fireplace or fire pit, spectacular lighting. And they want all of it in a cohesive garden setting surrounded by an amazing planting design. Creating it all is a complex undertaking.”

Innovation necessitates experimentation. For artist Gabrielle Marie Stone, the founder of Gabrielle Stone Studio, that’s what makes her art grow and evolve. “There are so many moments that propel an art practice forward,” Stone says. “New materials, new techniques, new scales. I think it’s the understanding that there isn’t one style or color scheme that I’m limited to. A healthy practice is about exploring new ideas, learning from others and allowing yourself freedom to explore. This sense of freedom enables me to take pride in my experimentation, which opens me up to new types of clients and aesthetic genres.” When asked how her art has changed recently, Stone cites painting on a bigger scale. She explains: “Arguably, the larger a piece is, the more immersive it is and the more it contributes to an overall environment. A bigger painting is like a bigger window—it lets more light in.”

ARTISTIC GOALS

Stone shares a bit about her work. “My pieces attempt to find a reconciliation between materiality, texture, a celebration of flatness and the illusory possibilities represented in the exploration of depth and space. Figures, masses and contours all suggest an alternative world— chaotic depictions of everyday objects and places—while the full embrace of paint as a material rather than a tool brings the eye back to the surface.”

GETTING SOCIAL

The ability to share work with a wider audience is the greatest benefit of social media. Stone shares that social tools give her “the ability to connect to audiences I wouldn’t have otherwise reached—new cities, countries, continents.” She adds: “For me, it isn’t all about reaching new clients. If other artists or designers or homeowners can see my work and take something from it, I consider it a success.”

INDUSTRY INSPIRATION

Gemma Parker-McKeon credits famed Parisian interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot as a strong influence. “His beautiful use of subtle colors, attention to detail, symmetry and combination of textures and materials is always inspiring. When I was first starting my firm, I remember reading that he said he would never bring on clients that he didn’t really want to work with. I have taken that to heart with each client that we take on. At the end of the day, it is most important that we find collaborative and inspiring relationships in order to make each project a massive success!”

A true innovator knows they need to trust their own instincts and follow their gut. Gemma Parker-McKeon, the principal of Gemma Parker Design, puts it simply: “We don’t follow trends.” Instead, she takes a big-picture view while never forgetting about the small stuff. Parker-McKeon explains: “When we are starting a design for a new project, we look at the project holistically and pay attention to the details. I love that the homes we design tell stories about our clients’ unique personalities and all have a different aesthetic. I love flexing my design muscles and creating spaces that are unique and interesting.” That custom level of service requires a specialized, personal touch—and that’s something that Parker-McKeon is happy to provide. As a boutique firm, they maintain a hands-on approach and Parker-McKeon, as principal, is involved in every project.

FAMILY FOCUS

GOING BIG AT HER HOME

Kole is a self-described maximalist. “I love rich, layered and grand spaces. Each room in my home tells a very glamorous story. Clients usually hire me because they are drawn to my luxurious style. That being said, not everyone is as extreme when it comes to designing their own home. Being mindful of client needs and wants—and staying true to the signature Jenami style that they hire me to create— proves to be the absolute perfect balance for creating a unique and beautiful home.”

Innovation is always about change—be it in big ways or small. How icons choose to make that change varies wildly. For Jennifer Kole, owner and lead designer of Jenami Designs, “An innovator is someone who is willing to break the rules and take risks with design.” Kole elaborates: “When designing a space for my clients, I am absolutely not a stickler for guidelines. My philosophy is simple. Is it functional? Is it aesthetically pleasing to those who inhabit the space? If the answer to either is yes, the way we achieve the final outcome should evolve organically, spontaneously and without a rule book.” She loves to encourage clients to think differently about home design. Kole advises, “If you love the way it feels to walk into a hotel room when you’re on vacation, why not feel that way every time you walk into your own bedroom at home? Design can be luxurious and liveable at the same time.”

Sometimes one is so far ahead of the curve that an industry needs to arc back around to them. Nathan Kipnis, FAIA, principal of Kipnis Architecture + Planning, decided early on to follow personal convictions that led him to creating energy efficient and sustainable designs. But early in his career, he was too far ahead of the trend. After graduating from Arizona State University in 1985 with a Masters of Architecture with an Energy Conscious Design emphasis, Kipnis “started talking to anyone about energy efficiency design” but “people just looked right through me.” They weren’t ready. Fast forward to today, and Kipnis leads NextHaus Alliance™, “a unique team of premier Chicago-area design and build firms committed to incorporating sustainability and resilient design in their residential projects.” He adds: “NextHaus Alliance™ is an integrated team that provides a concierge experience through the entire process.”

ICONIC INSPIRATION

Nathan Kipnis cites architecture that has inspired him. “Frank Lloyd Wright’s ability to design in near-perfect alignment with nature was amazing,” he says.

“Fallingwater—one of the greatest homes ever designed— seems to me to be a solar home, with broad overhangs shading south-facing glass. The low winter light comes into the home and is absorbed into dark flooring. There is a ventilation tower that draws up and out hotter air and brings in cooler air down by the river that runs under the property.” Kipnis also cites Chicago-based architects Keck and Keck. “They were first to coin the term ‘solar home’ with a 1940 design for a Glenview home. They became known for their tight integration between energy efficiency and modern designs and have examples all over the Northshore. There was one just three houses away from the home that I grew up in.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Collander says the next project on the schedule is a legacy home in Wisconsin. “It’s a Frank Lloyd Wright that has been lovingly restored over 20 years. It’s an honor to work on it. Our current designs are colorful, fun and smile-inducing.”

LAUREN COLLANDER

Sometimes a career is truly a calling. For Lauren Collander, design work was always her destiny. She distinctly remembers her first project, age six: “My childhood bedroom design on a trifold poster board created with a carpet remnant and Sesame Street wallpaper.” Her training also started at a tender age. “My dad worked at the Mart and visits to showrooms made an impact,” says Collander. “Sometimes he took me to work—even flying me to meetings at a client’s location and sending me with architects so I could experience the world I was drawn to.” After earning an Interior Design degree, Collander worked globally designing for hotels through firms like HBA and Looney & Associates. In 2013, she returned to her hometown of Naperville, Illinois and hung her shingle. Collander adds, “I started Lauren Collander

with a global yet local flair and the belief that everyone deserves incredible design.”

THAT SPECIAL SOMETHING

“We set up families to have a home that is supportive, open and helps them meet life goals,” says Collander. “Our designs are livable spaces that include bold colors, patterns and a wise investment strategy. We may create a sunny nook for morning coffee, a place that the kids flock to in order to stay close to home, or a house with full automation for a tech lover.”

THE START OF THE DREAM

Early in Wallace’s career—“as a young businessperson and mother”—she “struggled with a lack of sleep. I had to remedy it in order to fulfill my goals. Following a friend’s advice and my research, I visited famed European mattress manufacturer Hästens, where I realized the impact a perfected fitted, quality mattress can have on restorative sleep.” She opened the first Hästens retail store in North America in 2005, and in 2020 evolved the business to The Luxury Bed Collection.

SLEEP FOR YOUR HEALTH

“Sleep is wellness,” Wallace says. “Our society deprioritizes sleep in order to achieve goals, but this is a harmful mindset. Our overall health is dramatically impacted by how well we sleep. We need to treat sleep the same way we treat drinking enough water, eating vegetables or exercising—sleep is a vital necessity for well-being and longevity.”

Innovation requires staying true to one’s vision. Mary Pat Wallace, the founder and principal of The Luxury Bed Collection, is a 30-year veteran of the design industry and in 2020 focused her company’s mission: “A commitment to sourcing the highestquality bespoke mattresses and sleep products from across the globe.” Wallace and her team of experts “have spent nearly 20 years helping clients transform their lives through sleep with showroom locations in Chicago, Naples and Dallas.” Americans are beginning to prioritize proper sleep due to improved technology tracking. Wallace says, “Our culture has embraced life-changing sleep by measuring it! Technology on the Apple Watches, Fitbits and phone apps measure the quality and quantity of sleep.” She adds: “Invest

it,

sleep directly affects your health and well-being. Restful sleep supports

physical, mental and spiritual life.”

Icons know they need to strike the right balance between honoring legacy and embracing change. Director Brandon Rogalski details how Power’s Luxury Residence Group does just that. “As a 96-year-old management-owned construction company with a forever focus on the Chicago region, there’s a connection between Power’s roots and our evolution into serving luxury residential clients, architects and designers,” he says. “In the early 90s, Power was asked by prominent clients to work with their architects and designers to manage their residences. Today, our dedicated group creates homes of distinction.” Rogalski credits the organization’s success to “the blending of robust construction management practices with technology, along with ‘old-school’ beliefs like: Relationships matter, always do the right thing, continuously learn and improve and have fun doing it! I like to keep it simple.”

TIME-SAVING TECHNOLOGY

“Years ago we embraced a state-of-the-art scanning technology that digitally creates a multidimensional version of every nook and cranny within an interior space,” Rogalski says. The technology ended up transforming their business and saving the company— and their partners—wasted resources. He explains: “We used the scanner for a luxury residence on Lakeshore Drive where we had just completed a full gut demolition and the architect was drawing up plans for the new interior. After reviewing the scans, we discovered most of the building’s plumbing risers were not located in the exact spots that the old, as-built drawings had indicated. If we hadn’t caught the problem early, the construction team would have had to stop work while the architect redesigned. Instead, the architect was able to rework plans without any cost or schedule impact.”

MK CONSTRUCTION

INC

One thing all icons have in common is an ability to stand the test of time. MK Construction was founded nearly two decades ago, and president and founder Marcin Kawa has been there every step of the way. Kawa says he “takes an active interest in every project constructed by the company and takes pride in making sure that everyone on the team understands how important their role is to the success of the business.” A major factor in that success is a commitment to excellence in all areas. “We are driven by focusing on constant clear and helpful communication through all stages of construction and between all parties,” Kawa says. “We always strive for continuous improvement in homes, systems, delivery and performance. We stay up on the latest news, trends and rules. And our challenging designs and collaborative work environment attract a range of talented professionals.”

BUILDING BLOCKS

MK Construction’s scope is so large that they may soon be creating a neighborhood near you. Marcin Kawa shares: “We recently finished a project that included seven houses on one block. And we are currently wrapping up a project called 9onWhipple where there are nine single-family homes on one block. We always have our hands full with custom-built homes and are working on several luxury home remodels. Our total construction activity is comprised of countless smalland medium-sized projects and a great number of large developments.”

SOCIAL SHARING

MK Construction uses social media to interact with clients and it’s been a great tool. Kawa says: “We are able to provide visuals for customers and get feedback from them, which has been extremely important in our growth as we are able to implement all the client wants and needs for every project.”

WILSON

A TALE OF TWO TASTES

Over the past 35 years, the husband-and-wife team behind Morgante Wilson Architects has naturally gravitated toward different design styles. Wilson’s tastes lean toward traditional, while Morgante prefers a more modern aesthetic. Now in their fifth home, the two have created a perfect harmony. “It is by far the most creative and pure synthesis of each of our styles,” Morgante says. “And that makes it our absolute best project.”

ORIGIN STORY

When homeowners are seeking architecture and design services, a firm with a sterling reputation and praise from the community is paramount. As Morgante Wilson Architects celebrates their 35th year of excellence, one of their greatest sources of pride is the lasting relationships they’ve cultivated with their loyal clientele. “Our goal for Morgante Wilson Architects is to continue our commitment to our craft and bring joy to our clients through our designs,” says Elissa Morgante, AIA, who, along with her husband, Fred Wilson, is a founding partner and award-winning architect. Morgante notes a need for a broader point of view across the design industry. “We bring a different perspective to design,” she adds. “That doesn’t mean we’re better or always right, but creating an open dialogue and allowing more voices to be heard can only enrich the world of design and architecture.”

Elissa Morgante moved many times during her childhood and in each new house she worked closely with her mother to make it feel like a home, igniting her interest in design at an early age. As an architecture student, Morgante found another important mentor in her first professor. “He was brutally honest with me about the profession’s challenges and rewards,” she shares. “And he set my career in architecture and design in motion.”

ROBBINS

A wise innovator knows when to respectfully stand in awe of something else. For Celeste Robbins, the president of Robbins Architecture, that something is nature. During the build for one of her first major projects, she stood on site “at the foot of the majestic Grand Tetons, surrounded by ranch lands and it taught me to respect and honor a home’s surroundings.” That moment made an impact. Robbins says, “Before I start any project, I let the site speak to me and then shape a home in its honor.” The interplay between nature and home is always a part of her designs. Robbins adds: “Modernism is not an edgy, severe aesthetic. It is a collection of principles—a balance of scale, an emphasis on the movement within and between spaces and a connection to nature. Each decision shapes the home into liveble art. Our clients allow us to be artists. Together, we build a more meaningful home.”

DETAILS -ORIENTED

Robbins describes about her firm’s design approach and explains: “Every choice we make is purposeful, with a dedication to detail, a discerning eye and a mind for creative, elegant solutions. We create warm homes that connect deeply with the people who live in them. Each space embodies who they are, what they love and how they live.”

INTERNET INSPIRATION

Social media allows Robbins to share more of her perspective. “Photos only tell part of the story,” she says. On Instagram she shares her vision and her thoughts. When looking for inspiration, she visits the following:

• @marielouise_hoestbo: The creative design director for Fritz Hansen posts beautiful Scandinavian midcentury spaces.

• @clementsdesign: A mother and son interior design firm with warm and textured looks.

A true innovator is able to see things in an entirely new way and, by doing so, can remake an industry. Stuart Cohen says that he and Julie Hacker “were among the first contemporary Chicago architects to introduce a vocabulary of traditional residential forms into our work.” He adds, “We promoted architecture as a representational rather than an abstract art.” Cohen was a student of Colin Rowe at Cornell University where he developed an appreciation for the importance of each building’s “context.” Hacker joined Cohen at his firm in the 1980s, and they have practiced together ever since. When it comes to thinking long-term, Cohen and Hacker say, “We are anti-trends and want our work to look as good in 30 years as it did when it was new.” They add: “Our work strives to be visually satisfying and responsible to client desires. Our legacy is to have produced a consistent body of idea-generated work of high quality.”

HISTORICAL LEGACY

Stuart Cohen has had a long career as a practicing architect, educator, curator and historian, and takes pride in the way all these roles come together in his work. A true innovator, Cohen changed the way historians view 20th century Chicago architecture through his 1976 exhibit and catalogue Chicago Architects, and later through his numerous books. He has lectured throughout the country and was a visiting professor at universities including Harvard, Columbia and Notre Dame. He is Professor of Architecture Emeritus at the University of Illinois Chicago and helped to educate over two generations of Chicago architects.

MAKE THE OLD NEW

Cohen and Hacker have seen a change in their slate of projects.

“In the past few years, our work shifted to primarily additions and renovations. We love it, because we believe in the concept of embedded energy in the form of existing materials, labor and craftsmanship. Saving, updating and giving new life to existing houses is our contribution to environmental sustainability.”

One sure sign of a powerful innovation is when people talk about it, and when clients and customers advocate for your business it is a sure sign that you’re doing something right. Damian Banasik, president of Ultimate Stone, says, “Word of mouth is possibly the best brand recognition that one can receive.” He adds: “After 22 years in business, our word of mouth has significantly grown to bring us a solid, fast-growing list of clients.” Ultimate Stone started out small and has continuously grown—in the size of their office, the scope of their business and the complexity of the projects that they are able to deliver for their clients. Banasik says: “We consistently keep up with trends to keep clients satisfied with our capabilities for new, unique custom projects. Designers come to us with new ideas and creations. Our job is to make sure we continue our quality craftsmanship to support them.”

CUSTOM DESIGNS ARE TRENDING

Ultimate Stone says the biggest trend today is the sheer amount of custom requests. Banasik reports: “New designs are aiming for more uniqueness. Clients are requesting custom backsplash details, custom stone surrounds on hood ranges and more. We hear new customization requests from our clients daily and we always work to accomplish any new request.”

TRADE TECHNOLOGY

Making investments to evolve a business is important to fostering innovation. Recently, Ultimate Stone improved some of their high-tech client solutions. “We invested in a new camera to better serve our clients in order to show them our technological abilities and our capabilities for vein matching,” says Banasik. “This helps us make sure our clients receive exactly what they hoped for and it gives them a chance to see how their project will turn out with the stone selected.”

Twice as Nice

Modern updates allow a traditional Winnetka abode to evolve into a dynamic family compound with a cool, airy elegance.

Architecture: Mark Weber and David Graham, Wheeler Kearns Architects

Interior Design: Andrea Goldman, Andrea Goldman Design

Home Builder: Mike Wujcik, Wujcik Construction Group, Inc.

Landscape Architecture: Sara Furlan and Dennis Murphy, Mariani Landscape

LUXESOURCE.COM 219

Nearly 15 years ago, a young family moved into a traditional shingle-style house on a meandering Winnetka lane. They decorated its newly constructed interiors as young homeowners often do—with not quite enough furnishings and an assist from a friend of a friend whose residence they admired and hoped to emulate.

As the years passed, the couple became known for entertaining on a grand scale, their children grew into talented athletes, and that stylish acquaintance and decorator—Andrea Goldman— became a good friend and designer renowned for creating interiors with a subtle, quiet beauty. The dwelling, however, hadn’t quite kept up with any of them and needed to evolve to accommodate the family’s social proclivities, active lifestyle and more contemporary taste.

When the neighboring property came up for sale, the owners and Goldman saw an opportunity to update the home’s functionality and aesthetic without tearing down walls. In collaboration with architect Mark Weber and his team, as well as general contractor Mike Wujcik, they created a contemporary guest house and sports pavilion with party-ready terraces that, when positioned alongside the main residence and around a new outdoor pool, transformed the two adjacent properties into one dynamic compound.

The simple new structures nod to the existing abode with their matching cedar shingle roofs, copper gutters and stacked-stone walls, but their modern steel windows introduce “a different sensibility,” Weber says. “These outbuildings are gracious, but they’re not trying to be the same as the house.” That said, Weber and his team did borrow some of the accessory buildings’ contemporary flavor by inserting the same steel windows into the primary dwelling’s façade—a move made to maximize views from the kitchen and adjacent hallway along with the primary bathroom. “We were taking old pieces out and putting new ones in, celebrating the contrast between the typical sensibilities of a traditional residence and our modern injections,” Weber explains.

To strengthen the new outbuildings’ feeling of belonging, landscape architects Sara Furlan and Dennis Murphy painstakingly preserved the property’s mature trees, including a massive old

oak that shades the pool. “Those old-soul trees do so much in terms of setting a sense of place, scale and proportion,” Furlan says. “Seeing branches behind a roofline settles the space, making it feel like it has always been there.”

Goldman aimed for a similar effect when orchestrating dramatic transformations inside the main residence. “Everything got lighter and more clean-lined, from millwork to furniture,” she says. A new barrel-vaulted ceiling finished in glossy Venetian plaster bounces light from the entry hall into the adjacent living and dining rooms while floor-to-ceiling windows allow sunlight to fill the kitchen, which was further brightened with white cabinetry.

From iconic midcentury modern chairs to an antique Indian charpai daybed, the home’s new furnishings are upholstered in fabrics that beg to be touched. “In our sample library, I have bins that are simply labeled ‘fuzzy.’ We love fabrics that you want to pet,” Goldman says, pointing to the Army-green boiled-wool felt on the family room ottomans and the lavender brushed linen on the living room’s custom banquette—a piece that plays to the clients’ desire for a lounge-like atmosphere. Even the dining room walls invite touch with a handmade fringed wallcovering created by artist Anna Wolfson from burlap strips.

Adding further layers of texture are wood, stone and ceramic vessels that Goldman sourced from all over the world, then, as she says, “hoarded for a couple of years” in anticipation of filling this abode’s many display shelves. “To me, the composition of accessories is as important, if not more important, than the bigger pieces that you place,” the designer explains. “That’s when a space starts to get truly finessed and feel more like a home.”

Bringing color to the serene palette are contemporary artworks that range from a text-based Mel Bochner painting in the family room to the foyer’s aerial photograph by David Burdeny, which provides a graphic backdrop for African headdresses that once decorated the original residence. Such connections to what came before were just as crucial to this renovation’s success as the design team’s updates. “The owners didn’t want it to feel totally new,” Goldman says. “They wanted something familiar yet exciting; a reflection of them at this stage in their lives. And I knew we had succeeded when, after the big reveal, they said, ‘We feel like we’re back home again—but in a better version of it.’ ”

Renovations to a log cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula create a remote, rustic retreat.

LUXESOURCE.COM230
Interior Design: Jessica Lagrange, Jennifer Durand and Molly Woodin, Jessica Lagrange Interiors

On a remote lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a 1924 log cabin set on over 200 acres dotted with additional buildings, such as a caretaker’s cottage, carpenter’s workshop, boathouse and garage, boasts century-old charm. The owner—a busy, young entrepreneur from a large family—wanted a vacation home to bring everyone together. There’s no air conditioning, and Wi-Fi is pleasantly spotty; they like it that way.

“This place is really about disconnecting from it all,” explains designer Jennifer Durand. Alongside firm principal Jessica Lagrange and designer Molly Woodin, Durand worked to preserve original details, like the generous fieldstone-and-brick fireplace and terra-cotta tiles on a bathroom floor, while appointing the cozy dwelling with vintage and antique finds mixed with classic custom pieces. The designers have known this family for many years. Older relatives of the owner were some of Lagrange’s first clients, Durand says, “so we’ve worked with pretty much all of them at some point, but this was kind of the next generation.”

Having vacationed in the area for decades, the family is deeply connected to this part of Michigan, and that familiarity inspired the feel of the interiors. While the owner’s design proclivities normally lean clean and contemporary, “he really sought to embrace the history of the home and the local environment. Nothing looks too new,” Durand explains. “The family wanted things that have patina and a back story.” In addition to scouring local antique stores for special finds to integrate into the decor, such as blankets, artwork and vintage picnic baskets, the design team also sought out pieces online. From there they scored hand-forged iron sconces for the kitchen and the antique Windsor chairs that now occupy the lakefacing dining room. The dining table is an original piece built for the space by a previous owner, one so weighty it’s not going anywhere soon.

Images of Ralph Lauren’s Colorado ranch abode provided by the owner served as an early inspiration for the interiors: rich, dark woods; leather club chairs draped in colorful

wool blankets; a stone fireplace; and lighting that glows. Fittingly, a Ralph Lauren Home blanket in warm tones of cinnabar and taupe became the inspiration for the downstairs color palette. Durand upholstered a large ottoman with the fabric and set it before the living room’s fireplace, rounding out the cozy furnishings with a commissioned antler chandelier, a twigs-andbirch-veneer cabinet and a leather chesterfield. To prevent the room from feeling too heavy, the designer swapped out the sofa’s leather seat cushions for a lighter linen.

Elsewhere on the main floor, a range with a vermilion door pops against the sage-gray kitchen cabinetry; red-and-white tile flooring enlivens the screened-in porch; and rugs, accessories, and window and door trim continue the warm palette. Upstairs though, in the bedrooms, “we flipped the script with neutral colors and botanicals on the walls,” Durand says. Soft prints, like the sage, sunflower-esque wallpaper in the primary bedroom, balance the visual activity downstairs. It’s a place that you could escape to and read during the summer, perhaps lounging on the comfy daybed or deepseated armchairs next to the windows. “You get such a great breeze up there,” she notes.

While most of the updates were to the design of the interiors, the house needed a more functional kitchen suitable for the likes of contemporary people who love to cook and entertain. Architect David Huggins, who works for Lagrange’s firm, led the reconfiguration of the room. In collaboration with builder Jeffrey Visner of Design/Build by Visner, he combined several smaller, segmented spaces into one open area. “ We paid careful attention to ensure it felt as though it had always been a part of the abode, starting with the addition of salvaged wood beams to match the other firstfloor spaces, as well as a beadboard ceiling and walls,” Durand explains.

The project was very much a collaborative effort, with several of the owner’s family members deeply involved in creating this departure from fast-paced work life and contemporary, glassand-steel aesthetics. Which was entirely the point. Together with family, “this is an escape from all of that,” Durand says.

Return to Roots

In Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood, a Mexican American artist creates pieces that tell his family’s story.

LUXESOURCE.COM 243

Like many artists, Salvador Dominguez considers how his viewers will interact with his work. But he had a specific audience in mind when he first started experimenting with his various processes. “Most of my family are laborers,” he explains. “I grew up in a Mexican American workingclass neighborhood in Los Angeles, and the concept of art isn’t familiar to them, especially my parents. I wanted to have a conversation with people who don’t come from an art background.”

The best way to create something that his dad could connect to, Dominguez surmised, was to use a visual language he understood.

“He’s a carpenter by trade but knows how to build a house from start to finish, so he’s very familiar with laying tile,” the artist explains. “I thought it would be a perfect connecting point to make paintings that are based on basic tile composition.”

His first segue into these tile paintings began with using silicone molds to capture manhole covers on the street and then casting layers of paint onto the resulting form. So many layers, in fact, that it creates a material with a thick fabric-like quality— what he calls a “skin.” He cuts the skin into smaller segments and wraps them around individual tiles, repeating the process before heat-fusing the finished pieces together into one large painting.

Dominguez has since extended this technique beyond manhole covers to fabrics he remembers from his old neighborhood. “There were these vinyl tablecloths that are really intricate, but they’re just plastic that looks like it’s been crocheted,” he says. “So, it’s very easy to mold those.”

The artist was also inspired by childhood visits to Mexico, where he would see street vendors weaving baskets out of inexpensive materials, such as brightly colored plastic. “I’ve been trying to find different ways of connecting my work to my heritage and

start exploring some of those traditional techniques,” he says, “except I wanted to use items that are more familiar to me.”

Dominguez has experimented with these processes using a multitude of components, including PVC-coated cords. He removes the fibers from inside to create hollow tubes that he then threads with welding wire. “It gives the cord more structural properties,” Dominguez explains. From there, he uses traditional techniques to weave the cord together with zip ties and create his sculptures. “I like to be very playful with the materials,” he adds. “I find that by allowing yourself to play, you’re able to find relationships that you wouldn’t otherwise.”

By incorporating these cultural touch points into his work, Dominguez strives to make art as a whole more accessible. “Sometimes the gallery world can be kind of intimidating,” he says. “I’m hoping that, by using materials that are familiar or common, the work is more inviting and can at least start conversations about what art can be.”

A central part of Salvador Dominguez’s practice is exploring time-honored craft techniques with nontraditional materials (below). A selection of vessels—both finished and in-process—are styled after woven baskets (left). His tile paintings, such as those wrapped with molds of vinyl tablecloths (bottom, left), speak to his upbringing in L.A. He uses 2D sketches (bottom, right) and 3D samples (opposite) to experiment with new directions and components.

MODERN COMFORTS

A Lake Michigan family home delves into the softer side of contemporary living.

Some residences compel one to stand on ceremony, their slick surfaces and precious materials undoubtedly beautiful yet ultimately untouchable. Steve and Leslie Shapiro imagined something far different for their family’s Highland Park abode overlooking Lake Michigan. Yes, they appreciated a clean and crisp aesthetic, how vast planes of glass and unbounded rooms could capture the sun-soaked lakeside experience. But with six kids and a bevy of family and friends, first and foremost “they wanted people to feel comfortable,” notes architect and designer Elissa Morgante, who alongside her husband, architect Fred Wilson, set out to create a relaxed yet refined modern place for them to gather. “This would be a classic, contemporary home with warm finishes and furnishings,” Wilson says.

The front façade created by Wilson establishes this delicate balance, substantial yet unpretentious with its streamlined gable roof and stucco walls surrounding a large courtyard, which accommodates a four-car garage for the couple’s stunning automobile collection.

Landscape architect Carrie Woleben-Meade added softness around the dwelling’s perimeter with perennial grasses and colorful flowering plants, like autumn moor grass and violet catmint. This looser, romantic palette adds “a little more texture in contrast to the stronger, simpler lines of the architecture,” she explains.

Once inside, the home immediately unfurls into the expansive living space, with the pool, sweeping lawn and lake filtering through a wall of floor-toceiling windows. Despite the open layout, Wilson still carved the great room into distinct entertaining enclaves by creating “a kind of enfilade,” he explains. Instead of hallways, spaces run into each other but remain defined by architectural structures. For example, the double-sided fireplace serves both the living room and four-season room while French doors allow light to circulate between the two. On the other end, a freestanding bar delineates the more formal dining area from the kitchen, allowing for cocktail hour on one side and morning coffee on the other. Lining the connecting spaces are custom built-ins constructed by builder Rocco DeFilippis to cleverly conceal supporting steel columns. These floating bookshelves ground the center while framing the lake vista beyond. “Everything flows

together, but spaces still have definition,” Wilson notes. “And I like that you’re not just confined to the room you’re in, as you’re borrowing views across the house and out into the landscape.”

These partial partitions help break up the white walls, as do organic textures, like the lead-gray stone fireplace surround with graphic white veins and ebonized oak panels above, which deftly slide away to reveal a television—essential for the couple as die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes fans. Overall, “we used a very natural palette,” Morgante says. “No crazy wallpapers and lights. Instead, we wanted materials that had a quiet relationship with the landscape and view.”

Varying wood tones in particular evoke specific moods. In the four-season room that seamlessly connects to the pool through pocketed doors, whitewashed shiplap creates a cabana-like ambience alongside the all-white upholstery and gauzy drapery. Meanwhile, dark chevron wood veneer adds dimension to the couple’s bedroom, cloaked in smoky velvet finishes, from the custom headboard to the lush rug. And amber-hued white oak panels bring organic warmth to the central stairwell, illuminated by custom minimalist fixtures designed to mirror the railing.

Morgante continued her subtle hand when fleshing out each space, sourcing furniture with simple silhouettes and juxtaposed textures. “It’s really about the whole composition,” the designer notes. “Each piece is beautiful independently, but you get this rich layering when you put it all together.” Large, festive dinners center around the live-edge dining table with a pragmatic vein of steel running through the center as a built-in trivet. More intimate family meals naturally gravitate to the warm walnut kitchen table extension built directly into the island. Ornamentation remains understated, like an armchair lined with leather fringe or an area rug with rippled patterns akin to a Zen sand garden. Ranging in shades of black, taupe and gray, “colors are very rich, but quiet, intended to be deferential to the beautiful blues and greens outside,” Morgante adds.

One almost never loses the sights and sounds of Lake Michigan while wandering from space to space. Yet the home feels most alive when its rooms are also filled with the family’s loved ones, their raucous game-day cheers and poolside laughter mingling indoors and out. “They are a family that is all about having fun and celebrating life,” Wilson says. “When you walk in, you feel that.”
