ZOOM LAND!
Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.
Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

Pax Lighting’s first collection, which debuted nationally in 2019, brings a modern, minimal sensibility to earthy ceramics. Designed by co-founder Jeff Nordhues—who attended The Art Institute of Colorado’s industrial design program, then plied his trade at Dessin Fournir and Baker Furniture before launching a studio with his wife, Teegan— each fixture offers a fresh combination of textured terra cotta and refined, precision brass available in a variety of customizable finishes, including Pax’s signature crackle glazes. “We want to create the type of fixtures that people love and keep for a long time: the statement pieces over a dining table or island, or the adorable sconces that complete the look of a powder room,” Teegan says. To achieve that heirloom quality, Nordhues and his team take a hands-on approach to making each one-of-a-kind piece, from finishing the brass to kiln-firing the glazed ceramics, which, Teegan says, “by nature, will come out slightly different every time.” paxlighting.com

Denver’s Cherry Creek North district has no shortage of stylish boutiques, but until the spring 2019 debut of White Peacock, there were slim pickings for shoppers in search of unique tabletop finds. Molly Myers, Olivia Louis and Doug Parsons noticed the gap from their vantage as operators of the Brass Bed, a local purveyor of fine linens, and decided to fill it with a sister store offering tabletop, bridal registry, and gift items diverse in style and price point and often not available elsewhere in the Mountain West. “We’re offering a young, fresh take on setting a table,” Parsons says. “You can choose a charger from Anna Weatherley and pair it with a Herend dinner plate and a Mottahedeh salad plate and play with it until you go, ‘Oh my gosh, this is it!’ ” whitepeacockdenver.com

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.
How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.
“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE
There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.

From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. James has developed a style that marries sumptuous luxury with modernism’s clean lines and uncluttered spaces. His passion for fine art has made him a favorite amongst major collectors, museum directors and trustees, though he is equally sought after by innovators and entrepreneurs in many fields.
Lori Weitzner is internationally known for her contributions to the world of textiles and wallcoverings under the Weitzner Limited brand, as well as for her rug designs for Perennials and West Elm and passementerie for Samuel & Sons. Her work is in the permanent collections of museums such as the Cooper Hewitt in New York and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Lori is the recipient of more than 25 prestigious design awards. She recently authored her first book—Ode to Color, The Ten Essential Palettes for Living and Design— published by Harper Collins, and lectures around the world on the effects of color on our well-being.
A native New Yorker, Pamela Jaccarino is the founding editor in chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, the largest residential architecture and design brand in the country, a position she has held since 2005. Pamela has been instrumental in the growth of the brand and continues to champion its fresh vision and evolution. She also frequently lectures on design-related topics. With landscape architect Jean Mus having transformed the exterior of this Texas home into a Tuscan-style garden, the interior designer carried that theme into the design of other parts of the outdoor area, including the veranda and a courtyard, complete with lush greenery.
Drawing inspiration from English garden rooms, the grounds of this Wakefield, Rhode Island, residence were divided into an entry court, a terrace with fire feature, a woodland garden, a dining terrace, a formal garden, two fencing pavilions and a sweeping lawn. Outside of a Dallas domicile, the precise, modern lines of site walls, water features and retaining walls are all softened by the calculated addition of large trees and textural plantings.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: CULINARY ROOTS Asked to discuss the state of the kitchen, Harrison notes that the open-concept great room, encompassing kitchen, living and dining, is still relevant. In addition, the idea of “back kitchen spaces” has gained traction owing to the larger room’s higher visibility and thus, need to be free of clutter. One current SRI project takes this a step further. “We are currently designing a chef’s kitchen with a walk-in ‘root cellar,’” DeChant says. “It is a main-level closet adjacent to the kitchen that will be climatized to emulate a root cellar. This is a pretty cool design we had never done before. To create it, we needed a stand-alone HVAC system and a wall to isolate the climate.”

rchitect Kim Raymond is known for residential work that brings historic houses back to their original glory and creating modern homes with cutting-edge style, but rarely does she have the opportunity to work in both vernaculars on the same site. Such was the case for an Aspen home, located in the historic West End neighborhood. Like many of the lots in the charming locale, this one contained a small miner’s cabin built in the 1800s. Working with the Historic Preservation Commission, Raymond and her team moved the cabin to the front of the property and restored and expanded it, freeing up the back of the lot, where she created a new residence. Although it’s completely different, it fits perfectly into the vintage setting while taking advantage of the stunning mountain views. It was those views that informed the layout of the new dwelling, and they were also the reason the architect decided that transparency was vital for the project. “The exterior would need to be subdued to fit in with the historic homes around it, but I knew that such a structure could be modern, too,” says Raymond. “I also knew right away I wanted there to be a lot of glass in the new house.” The resulting residence has multiple windows that open to the mountains ringing Aspen. While the humble miner’s cabin was designed to embrace the streetscape of the town, the architect created the modern dwelling to take in the view. It rises up two stories, with a floor plan that project manager Milo Stark terms “upside down” because the public rooms are on the second level and the private spaces are on the first. Raymond explains, “We put the primary, public living spaces upstairs, where the clients could most enjoy the scenery during the day.”

Despite being elevated, the main floor still has access to the outdoors, thanks to a giant glass door that slides behind the fireplace wall to expose the living room to an ample deck. Downstairs, the master bedroom has the same indoor-outdoor living opportunity due to a large patio serving as a private outdoor living space. Traditional windows and doors aren’t the only sources of natural light. Multiple clerestory windows and ample skylights deliver both architectural interest as well as additional illumination, making for a seamless indooroutdoor experience. Even the finished basement invites sunshine from outside, with skylights designed as light wells that prevent the lower level from “feeling underground,” says Stark. The interior steel fireplace and stairway railing mimic the industrial steel channels on the exterior façade. European oak ceilings travel outside to the home’s exterior soffits, echoing the warmth of the oak floors used in the interior. Simple, white walls—sans millwork—create the perfect, minimalist backdrop for the commanding views, and the crisp white color echoes the white wood siding on the exterior. The owners wanted a monochromatic color scheme, with most of the furnishings in shades that fall between black and white, so the changing colors outside could dominate. “Nothing inside the house competes with the view for attention,” says one of the homeowners. “I feel that our subtle interior palette and material selections allow the architecture of the home to make a stronger impact.” The family selected pieces that are both timeless and contemporary, not to mention forgiving of steady foot traffic in and out of the snow. They carefully curated modern light fixtures in each space that double as sculptural art. For the kitchen, bathrooms and stairwell, Raymond took a less-is-more approach and designed spare spaces that allow lines and angles to become artistic architectural features. Slate gray cabinetry and open shelves create a geometric contrast in the kitchen alongside a beautifully veined marble backsplash. In the stairwell, exterior wood louvers deliver pattern—and a bit of privacy—to the glass walls that encase it. The master bathroom features subtle touches like a marble bench that extends outside of the shower. Whether the home’s architectural elements are quiet or more pronounced, Raymond says they all shine. “This house was designed to showcase the ‘new’ Aspen—to show where architecture is going now,” says Raymond. “I’m finding more and more people crave modern design because its clean lines promote a Zen atmosphere. Everyone these days feels the weight of the chaos and busyness of life, and it’s nice to come home to a space that provides a sense of calm.”

Raymond designed the living room to feel as if it were outside, with pocket doors that disappear entirely to expose the panoramic views of Aspen Mountain. “The whole upper part of the house needed to be glass,” she says. “It feels transparent and it’s subdued, so you can really take in that view.” A simple rolling bar cart by RH lends a sense of transparency. Steel railings off the balcony mimic those used in the stairwell.

Raymond designed the wine cellar to be a semi-transparent room divider. “You can access the wine from either side, and it reads as sculptural art as well as storage,� she says. White RH barstools feature steel bases, which marry well with the veneered India wood cabinetry, whose matte finish mimics the steel opposite the kitchen and blends seamlessly with the black appliances. estled in the lush forests surrounding Larkspur, Colorado, this family home seems like the idyllic picture of farmhouse living from the outside. But inside the newly built dwelling, agrarian style meets a sophisticated aesthetic for a fresh hybrid look. The initial vision for the design came from the wife. “I had this picture of a farmhouse, but with a classy spin,” she explains. “I wanted a home that’s comfortable, but also elegant.” To create it, the homeowners assembled a design team composed of architect Karen Sund, designer Gina D’Amore Bauerle and general contractor Kent Lersch. For the more glamorous features of the home, she found that Bauerle was an enthusiastic ally. “On a personal level, I love anything that sparkles,” notes the designer. “And it’s a pleasure when I find a client who feels the same.” Although Sund embraced a subtle farmhouse look for the architecture both inside and out, her work is a mix in its own right, merging the board-and-batten siding of the genuine American farmhouse with romantic stonework that harkens to Tuscan country villas. This is especially true for the home’s entry, where the architect created a grand entrance similar to the ones found on the large Italian stone homes the wife admires. Inside, large windows and soaring ceilings (including a lofty 24-foot-high expanse in the kitchen) provided room for styles to mix and mingle. “We incorporated glam elements while staying true to the style of the home,” notes Bauerle. The process continued by marrying rustic farmhouse details to more polished finishes. Rugged notes are provided by the dark-stained trusses and beams that span the ceilings, sliding barn doors and gray-washed reclaimed flooring

used throughout the home. Echoing notes from the exterior façade, Sund incorporated stone inside to add architectural heft to the main floor. Bauerle brought dazzle through elements such as the home’s showpiece fireplaces. In the master bedroom, for example, she used quartz wedge, which “at certain times of the day makes the whole room sparkle.” For the statuesque fireplace in the kitchen, the designer combined natural marble tile with glitter grout—a subtle accent she says gives it an elevated look. The kitchen itself became the home’s grand treatise for infusing more allure into countryside living, starting with the walls clad entirely in classic farmhouse shiplap. “The builder looked at me like I was a special kind of unicorn when I told him I wanted to cover the whole room with the paneling,” laughs the designer. But the fresh white backdrop provides the perfect foil for the glossy black cabinetry by Tharp Custom Cabinetry and brass hardware the wife desired. The grand finale, however, came courtesy of the vintage-inspired Italian range and towering vent hood custom made by Raw Urth Designs, a fine metal fabricator in Fort Collins. Bauerle says the grand scale of the fixture “was the anchor the space needed to ground everything.” It’s this type of singular piece that gives Bauerle personal delight to source, drawing on a list of artisans and vendors she’s been amassing while operating D’Amore Interiors, the showroom established 40 years ago by her parents Frank and Marilyn D’Amore. Finding plush upholstery proved key in satisfying the home’s luxury quotient, from the family sectional in the great room to the velvet sofa in the wife’s favorite shade of fuchsia for her office. She was not afraid of these bold strokes of color, and the designer was only too happy to oblige, especially in more private, personal spaces like the dark gray master bedroom and the teal library bejeweled with crystal hardware and gold-bound books. “I also have a thing for beautiful, unique lights,” confesses the wife, a feeling that challenged the designer to create bespoke fixtures, many of which are chandeliers with a textured, almost industrial edge that fuse delicate crystals with dark metal accents. “It’s not every day we can install these kinds of fixtures, but this was just the right house for them,” says Bauerle. “And these are the dreamiest lights. They are straight out of A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. ” The designer’s and wife’s shared affinity for such details caused the pair to forge a style kinship throughout the experience. “She so clearly put her heart and soul into this,” says the wife of Bauerle’s work. “I just provided the visions of what I wanted, and she found the perfect things that were funky and unique—we were really the perfect team.”

Although serene neutral tones are found throughout the home, the designer also embraced bold moments of color, as she did here in the great room. Bauerle played off and amplified the hues in the Kalaty area rug with a velvety Massoud sectional and pulled out notes of rusty orange with throw pillows. The split wood detail on the Four Hands white coffee tables is a nod to the home’s more rustic side.

here’s something inherently luxurious about living with exactly what you need. That was the premise Paul Cathers set out to explore with the design of his new Basalt home, one half of a contemporary duplex that’s just a quick scooter ride from the home furnishings store and design studio he has owned and operated since 2000. After trading a career in high fashion for one in interior design, Cathers moved to the Roaring Fork Valley, eventually settling on two acres by a river. The setting was lovely, but it came with a downside. “I spent all my weekends mowing the grass,” Cathers explains. “Not doing that anymore definitely appealed to me.” A much smaller property, he decided, would offer the perfect opportunity for him to adopt a more simplistic lifestyle and an aesthetic that hews more closely to his understated personal style. A small lot he purchased in Basalt’s southside—which came with strict height and square footage limits in addition to an enviable park-side location—would ensure he and his design team stayed true to his minimalist vision. From the outside, that aspiration is evident in the structure’s concise palette of high-contrast finishes. Its twin gabled forms are clad with clean-lined, clear-cedar siding (a nod to Cathers’ roots in the Pacific Northwest) while a low, dark-metal shed roof emphasizes the contemporary vibe. The entry is defined by an angular architectural form with sides clad in black cement-board panels, and the top of it serves as a second-floor deck.

Inside the home, which Cathers shares with his fiancée, Rachel, the efficiency of open-plan living comes into stark relief. The living and dining rooms and kitchen are made bright by floor-to-ceiling windows. When organizing the first-floor spaces, Conrardy made the unusual move of placing the dining room just beyond the entry door. “I wouldn’t say it’s a traditional approach,” she says, “but it allows the living room to be cozier and set back from the street.” The need for privacy also drove her design for the living room’s wide fireplace wall, which prevents passersby on the public walking path that meanders along the park-facing side of the house from peeking in toward the sofa. Upstairs, in the master bedroom, she created a wraparound deck with a solid railing, which allowed her to draw in two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. “The master is like having a huge tree house,” Cathers says. “The view is constantly changing, and that’s what’s so exciting: This huge living piece of art is our first vision in the morning.” From the floors up, a quiet palette reigns. “I was hesitant to add too much warmth to the finishes, or to make anything heavy or too detailed, because the spaces are small,” says designer Denise Taylor, who consulted with Cathers on the finish selections. “The materials we chose are complementary, clean-lined and flow from one space to the next.” The hefty steel I-beam that spans the kitchen ceiling, for example, complements the living room’s slate-clad fireplace wall, which, in turn, nods to the modern stairwell, made memorable, builder Patrick Maley says, by its combination of “wood floors, treads and grab rails playing off exposed steel risers, guard rails and hand-rail brackets for a super-clean, industrial, modern look.” An equally cohesive approach to color relies on neutral furnishings—a low-profile living room sofa in flint gray, a white hair-on-hide bed in the master bedroom, gray wool upholstered kitchen counter stools—that serve as foils for pops of vivid color. “We incorporated bright hues where they were needed and made sense,” Cathers says, most notably in the dining area, where barrel chairs upholstered in an ebullient gold velvet sidle up to an unfinished wood table. These spaces may serve as a case study in minimalism, but they’re also a reflection of Cathers’ refined tastes. “I definitely like nice things,” he says, “and I think that in a small space we’re able to have a few key, nice things that are close to my heart.” Some of those elements, like a built-in Miele coffee machine, are functional, while others—a bedroom’s frosted-glass chandelier, or the impeccable drywall reveals that create a subtle shadow line above the floors, “making them feel endless,” Taylor says—are simply beautiful. By selecting them, Cathers has hit upon the secret to finding luxury in simplicity: It’s less about giving things up and more about getting crystal clear about what’s really important—and then letting those details dazzle.
