LETTER EDITOR’S

All Your Own Of the many design evolutions the past year has wrought, one of the most striking has been that our homes are becoming more finely tuned to what we desire. The interiors we inhabit are less showpiece and more a statement about personal expression. Honestly, after 2020, does anyone care anymore about impressing the neighbors? As priorities shift, our homes are designed with greater intention and with individual style emerging. In this issue, we turn to several creatives to hear how their flair manifests. This issue also celebrates our GOLD LIST: design professionals from across the country whose projects graced our pages the past year. We greatly admire the taste and talent they bring to their work. As for me, I’m a creative at heart who relishes nesting at home. I’ve been on-again/off-again painting my fireplace wall. I didn’t think too long and hard about the pattern...or about the effort! Rather, it’s a moment that sparks joy. As we head into this new year, I wish you much happiness in your own home.

ON VIEW

Several weeks remain to visit the Denver Art Museum exhibition “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism,” a traveling show that explores the Mexican modernism movement through various artistic mediums. Timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of the Mexican Revolution, the exhibition explores themes of independence and national identity through more than 150 post-revolution artworks by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and their contemporaries, including Lola Álvarez Bravo, Gunther Gerzso, María Izquierdo and Carlos Mérida. Highlights include seven of Kahlo’s selfportraits; Mérida’s bold, geometric works, including Festival of the Birds; and Rivera’s original works, including his beloved Portrait of Natasha Gelman (right). Also on view are large displays of Rivera’s iconic fresco murals, politically charged works of public art commissioned by the post-revolution government to educate, inspire and reunify Mexico’s population. The exhibition closes January 24. denverartmuseum.org

where she shares the products and makers she discovers every day while sourcing furnishings and accessories from around the world.

WHO: Interior designer Lindsay Hendrix, principal of Denverbased Hi-Luxe Interiors, prides herself on helping clients finetune their unique aesthetics in a sophisticated, put-together way. When it comes to her style, she’s like a kid in a candy shop. “I love midcenturymodern design and think that style can go with just about anything,” she says, “but I also love Asian design and classic farmhouse elements. Maybe you could call that eclectic?”

WHY: Hendrix is a self-described sucker for neutral furniture pieces layered with colorful, texture-rich accents (think mintgreen walls, vibrant decorative tiles, and even a bit of macramé), and you will be too after browsing her feed filled with light and lively rooms. There’s a bit of drama to be found here, too, from sweeping murals to high-contrast color combinations.

WHAT: Hendrix uses her feed to share spaces that spark her creativity and design ideas from her completed residential projects. It’s also a treasure trove of decor finds from Hendrix’s Hi-Luxe Boutique, an online shop

IN HER WORDS: “The purpose of my feed is to inspire. When someone tells me that they saw a post from my Instagram account that they loved, or that they want to model their new space around, that’s a win in my book.”

COVE GOODS, ROAM COMMON AND STUDIO MARCETTE In 2014, entrepreneur and Denver transplant Lee Mayer began her takeover of the digital design space by co-founding Havenly, an online alternative to traditional interior design services that digitally delivers custom decorating ideas. Now she’s making her next big move: launching three new Havenly-curated home brands. Here, Mayer shares the details with Luxe. havenly.com What inspired you to enter the home goods marketplace? We learn so much every day from our clients and designer base about what they are looking for in the market. This helped us see trends in design early on and identify gaps in the marketplace. The natural next step was to curate home brands offering on-trend goods at approachable price points to better serve our customers. Tell us about the new collections. One of our most popular styles is the quintessential California-casual vibe, with a relaxed yet refined quality that feels as lovely as it is livable. We introduced Cove Goods as our interpretation of the Pacific-natural lifestyle, paying homage to new coastal design with neutral colors, woven textiles and timeless details. Roam Common is all about la vie bohème. Inspired by free-spirited style, the line features organic textures, globally inspired motifs and pops of vibrant color. And we created Studio Marcette to infuse everyday luxury into our clients’ homes; it combines trending patterns, rich textures and clean lines to make any space feel a little more glamorous. At Havenly, we call the inspiration behind this brand “Parisian Modern”—a mix of ornate details and modern sensibilities.

MEET THE MAKER JULIE MAREN

After years of painting, stone-carving and textile design, Boulder-based artist Julie Maren decided to take her work directly onto the wall. “Biophilia,” her latest body of work, features sculptural “paintings” that play with shape, color theory, microscopic and macroscopic perspectives—and unconventional materials. juliemaren.com What prompted your shift from canvas to walls? When I realized that what I was most interested in was the patterns of dots that appeared throughout my paintings, I began thinking of ways to extract them. I use many layers in my paintings to create the illusion of depth, and I was also thinking about how I could create actual depth. “Biophilia” achieves those goals with an unusual material. The sculptures are composed of acorn caps filled with paint and other materials, including mica, rubber, glass and crystals. In my quest to take my paintings off the canvas, I applied for and was awarded a monthlong residency at Weir Farm in Wilton,

066

LUXESOURCE.COM

Connecticut, through the National Park Service’s artist-in-residence program. There, I took long walks in the woods, looking at the millions of tiny acorn tops carpeting the path. They were little canvases, discarded by nature! You describe these sculptures as a sort of 3D pointillism. Each piece is like an individual painting, and the Biophilia appear as bouncing dots of color. Projected at different depths on the wall, they play with visual perception and cast shadows, which shift throughout the day, making the Biophilia feel almost alive. I find satisfaction in recycling and reanimating discarded natural material into new, seductive organisms.

Denver may be a long way from California’s sunny shores, but the Malibu-born home-goods boutique Coda Studio has found some common ground, which it celebrates through a collection of bespoke modern furnishings that embody a chic, laid-back glamour. “We love combining natural textures and exotic woods, which bring warmth to the modern furnishings,” says architect Angela Feddersen. She owns and operates the brand’s first outpost, which opened in Denver’s Cherry Creek North shopping district last February (an Aspen location debuted in late 2020). Coda Denver’s customizable furnishings are designed to reflect Colorado’s natural surroundings, aesthetic and indooroutdoor lifestyle, and include upholstered, metal and wood pieces handmade in Los Angeles using sustainable, Southern California-sourced materials whenever possible. A stylish selection of accessories, including art, textiles and lighting, highlights Colorado makers, “bringing a unique personality and story to each piece,” Feddersen says. Full design services are also available to those clients looking to infuse every inch of their homes with Coda’s particular brand of cool. coda.studio

The new Moda Domus tabletop line includes a full collection of Fiorito ceramic ware, doublerimmed scalloped linens, Murano glassware and candlesticks.

When Lauren Santo Domingo founded the online luxury retailer Moda Operandi in 2010, it was clothes and shoes—not place mats and flatware—that got her pulse racing. Fast forward to today, and Santo Domingo, a passionate connoisseur of beautiful china, glassware and table linens, has come to embrace her decidedly more “domestic side.” The fashion executive recently debuted Moda Domus, a tabletop collection for Moda Operandi that reflects a love of relaxed yet elegant entertaining. Luxe caught up with the stylish entrepreneur sheltering at home with her family in Southampton. What’s your new normal like these days? In the city, I used to love going out for coffee before heading to the office. Now, I make my own coffee and sip it wandering in my garden, often in my slippers. I haven’t worn heels in nine months. I bought my first sweatsuits, one from Cotton Citizen and a cashmere one from Madeleine Thompson. Though I can’t help but think of what Karl Lagerfeld said about how wearing sweatpants was like giving up on life! Ha! Although, it looks like you’ve found a creative outlet in flower arranging. Completely. I’ve gotten really into growing

flowers and floristry. I used to measure my seasons through fashion, and now I’m marking time based on what flowers are coming in, whether it’s hellebores or lily of the valley or sweet peas. I’ve been buying antique vases and vessels from auction sites. So, how did you develop your interest in tabletop? It actually started with the business. As Moda grew internationally, we began having special dinners for designers and top clients. We put a lot of effort into our tables and decor, and the response was amazing. The next day people would be asking me, “Where can I get this?” I also enjoyed the creativity. Designing the tables felt much more satisfying than simply putting on something to wear. Describe the inspiration. I love heritage pieces that feel like something passed down or collected. I would say I’m very inspired by my mother in law, who is very elegant and entertains beautifully. She and her friends have incredible collections of porcelain and silver from a range of makers and countries. Does that sentiment show up in the Fiorito ceramics? Yes, it’s a pattern I saw at auction based on an 18th-century

Italian design. We found the original manufacturers and asked them to remake the pattern for us in pieces our clients would use today. Each piece is handpainted in Emilia-Romagna. Tell us about the Murano glassware. I’ve spent a lot of time in Venice collecting vintage Murano glass. The wine glasses with the swirled stem are based on an antique set I own from the turn of the century. The original glasses are smaller, almost the size of cordial glasses; we’ve updated them to modern scale. How do you envision the collection being used? Everybody has the gilt china and fabulous wine glasses they got as wedding gifts. But how often do they ever use them? This is much more casual— the way I like to entertain. It’s perfect for a lunch or casual dinner. I don’t use finger bowls or have butlers behind every chair, so why would I want an ornate and formal table setting? Let’s say you’ve arranged your table in the country with Moda Domus settings. What are your guests wearing? Hmmm. I could see them wearing a great knit sweater, a perfectly tailored trouser and a small heel. Casual but sophisticated.

Alessandra Branca walks us through her Chicago atelier, where one room is covered in her new Audrey wallpaper in Cerise & Loden and the sofa is upholstered in Garda Mohair in Mushroom. “I happen to love pattern play,” remarks the designer.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Get Alessandra Branca talking about color and the pace becomes waltz-like, her voice honeyed. As she walks me through the luscious palettes of Into the Woods, the second collection from her eponymous home brand, Casa Branca, I decide to abandon my interview prompts and just enjoy. We begin in a sea of mossy green swatches, a colorway she describes as “a play on the classics but updated with pops of acid.” Next, we’re onto pairings of powder blue and chocolate brown. “I love ying-yang, male-female coloring,” she exclaims. “We never see enough of this combination, and it’s so chic and wonderful!” And finally, we move into reds, a signature hue of the designer’s. “It’s fun; it’s pop; it’s cool,” she muses, adding, “Red keeps you coming back.” As with Branca’s first collection, the designs—which span fabric, wallpaper and a growing breadth of home furnishings and accessories—are meant to be mixed and matched, interwoven with future collections and shopped by color story. They’re also deeply influenced by travel. This round, the designer drew inspiration from a fantasy brief particularly well-suited to the times.

“I love Italy’s Sudtirol, and I’ve been wanting to do an old Tyrolean-style, A-frame mountain house in a fresh way,” she says. “The question of ‘What can I do to update that lifestyle?’ is really what this collection is about.” Such pointed wanderlust resulted in patterns like Verdure Camo, a riff on the popular 17th-century hunting tapestries that Branca reimagined and spunked up by fusing traditional motifs with camouflage, and Audrey, a 19th-century archive print reimagined with bulbous blooms of exaggerated scale and named after Little Shop of Horrors’ leading character. Rounding out the collection, a medley of Branca takes on faux bois, tartan, stripes and peacock marble, as well as solids in teddy-like mohair, creamy cotton velvet and stalwart linen, create a cocooning ethos that does seem to tap into some primordial, back-to-thewoods version of luxury.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Casa Branca’s Into the Woods debut includes (left, from top) Audrey in Bolzano, Umbra in Bolzano and Giordano Camo performance fabric in Bolzano. The collection’s earthy palette, shown on the mood board above, was inspired by the northern Italian city of Bolzano.

Fortunately, the still repose of the past year didn’t hinder the designer—who describes a perfect Saturday as one spent amidst a stack of books—from developing the second installment of Casa Branca (available now) in the throes of the pandemic, not to mention, successfully launching the brand

last June. “I didn’t have to go far,” she says. “I literally walked around my life. That’s where this all came from.” Inspiration begetting inspiration, I begin researching the Italian part of Tyrol I knew little about before meeting Branca—and aching to redecorate.

Reflecting on my personal aesthetic begins with memories of my mom’s colorful outfits and red lipstick. I grew up in a world of color and pattern—French, African and Far East Asian influences. At home, there were art and sculptures, such as the pair of elegant felines that live in my living room today. There were textiles, like the chinoiserie print with golden threads on the formal living room sofa. I remember the effortless mix—not expensive or formal, but unique and just right. Growing up in New Orleans, you learn being different can be a badge of honor. I am unabashedly a girly-girl. My mom used to dress me in ruffles, pinafores, lace socks and shiny patent leather shoes. With my Coke-bottle glasses, you can imagine it was quite a sight. After my time in college known as the “sweatpants era” and a start in finance I classify as the “how boring can this suit be” period, I began a return to my true innate spirit. Fashion and decor were the ways to express my creativity within the confines of my gray pinstripesuit world. Perhaps the white Phillip Lim dress with the 3D flowers, high-heel patent leather Mary Janes and black tights weren’t exactly office attire, but I didn’t let that stop me from strutting down the halls and turning a few heads. My passion for the decorative arts and design shone through my home decor during that formative time. I had eight apartments in 15 years just to redecorate. Crazy, but so much fun! I played—a Hershey’s chocolate dining room in my Midtown place, peacock blue-painted walls and ceiling in the Uptown bedroom, and even the perfect white in my highrise bachelorette pad. I spent years experimenting on myself—a big reason why I am unafraid to be bold in my work today.

Billy Ceglia in the sitting room of his client’s home in Armonk, New York.

Billy Ceglia True inherent style is an unerring and unapologetic point of view that can be translated into every aspect of an individual’s life. It informs everything the possessor does and has—from the way they answer the phone, welcome you into their home, dress, and of course, decorate their living spaces. In my own homes, I try to create a sense of ease and comfort to welcome guests—adopting small details like leaving the door unlocked and arranging empty hangers in the coat closet for their garments. I have a “help yourself ” attitude when it comes to refreshments or anything in my home. If you need it, it’s yours for the taking. Since I adhere to such a tight design lexicon of simple materials and shapes, and a relatively limited color palette, it has jokingly been said that my favorite color is “plain”—and I happily own that. While I appreciate the ornate and complex, my personal preference always circles back to a level of simplicity with a touch of the unexpected or tongue-in-cheek. It could be a few books with funny titles, such as Avery Monsen’s All My Friends Are Dead (a particular favorite), or a subtly subversive piece of art in an otherwise sober room. These same details are also a part of my wardrobe. What appears to be a classic menswear pattern could be made up of thousands of cartoon mice, or the lining of a jacket could be painted with illustrations from Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon, with a secret message under the collar to “follow me.” Similar to my streamlined fashion choices, my interiors are filled with simple and practical fabrics, tailored furniture and timeless details that reflect an enduring point of view. This leaves room for my personality, which is neither “plain” nor uncomplicated!

Noz Nozawa

Noz Nozawa with her French bulldog, Vivienne, in her San Francisco apartment.

LUXESOURCE.COM

It never occurred to me that my box of a city condo would become a homey shrine to my collection of eccentric things. A decade ago, I was in my early 20s, flailing in the aftermath of the recession and searching for a place to buy when my mom sold my childhood home. The panging feeling of my foundation being uprooted while simultaneously my family having no home of our own stuck with me. I think it’s why, despite my dreams of moving into an iconic San Francisco Victorian, I remain in my developer-built flat. As a result, a big part of how my style manifests is working within limitations. I like testing and pushing boundaries to see how many colors and patterns a room can handle before it feels uncomfortable. When I allowed myself to use my home as a canvas for experimentation, a new part of my creative brain unlocked. I found a 19th-century French sideboard to use as a bar and installed modern built-ins around it marrying my home’s modern lines with my love of antiquity. With decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga, I created a “conspicuous camouflage” mural on the walls with gilded brush lines. Then I had the idea for cartoonish tapestry-inspired blobby drapes and collaborated with artist Isa Beniston to bring funny dragons and lions to life in my windows. A defining moment early in my career was when I read that one of the ottoman seats in a room designed by Ken Fulk on a magazine cover was sourced from Costco. I thought, “His projects have budgets I can barely imagine, but he chose to leave that piece in!” It reaffirmed my principles: Keep what you love, work with things that don’t need replacement, put nothing on a pedestal and check your humility.

Jenny Brown in the dining room of her client’s home in Lincoln Park, Chicago.

Jenny Brown

I’ll never forget the excitement when a bag of hand-me-downs from Wendy, a family friend, would appear on our kitchen table. On one occasion, the bag contained a powder pink tracksuit, the kind popular in the ’80s, and a far departure from the smocked Laura Ashley or appliqued Florence Eiseman dresses I normally donned for a special event. Ready for my best friend’s birthday party, I descended our staircase channeling my inner Wendy in the ensemble—my mousy brown hair newly coiffed with bangs and big glasses. Cloaked in the confidence of looking and feeling great, in my mind, I had arrived. Growing up in Lake Forest, Illinois, where architect David Adler was the patron saint and understated elegance reigned supreme, I was raised to appreciate the relaxed formality of my parents, my grandmother and their friends. While their homes were beautifully decorated, if you looked hard enough you would find an element of humor and whimsy. From miniature model rooms tucked within a library bookshelf and ladybug wallpaper adorning a formal powder room to miles of chintz covering windows and chairs, these houses reflected the confident ease of lives well lived and taught me to appreciate patina over polish. Real style does not seek the approval of others. It is the creative expression of those who possess it and have the confidence and joie de vivre to pull it off. Looking at photos from that birthday party where I’m wearing the powder pink tracksuit, I confess, I now prefer the pretty dresses my friends wore, though I am grateful for the encouragement from my parents to explore my own tastes. It is more than OK to stand out in a crowd.

Gestural Meaning Carmen Neely’s artwork is not just a purely aesthetic object. Personal experiences, including being female, Black and American, all inform her work. Behind every brushstroke and color choice is intention and intuition, which stem directly from those experiences. Emotions of heartbreak (the impetus for the work shown above), disappointment, optimism, anger and joy are all equally important tools she employs in her work, as are the oil paints and physical ephemera that adorn her canvases.

While learned visual rhetoric often associates light and dark with good and evil, Haynes sees the disparity in the shades on the canvas as more harmonious than divisive. As for the subjects, the artist is determined to show her figures as graceful, demure and strong—the kind of complex attributes that Black women traditionally have not been afforded.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

ANDREA SCHUMACHER, PRESIDENT andreaschumacherinteriors.com 303.458.6462 andreaschumacherinteriors

t Andrea Schumacher Interiors, the endeavor to make design “all about the client” goes beyond discovering the style they enjoy. “We interview our clients to find out how much involvement they want, and to extract their life story, which we aim to creatively reflect in their home,” says namesake and president Andrea Schumacher. “Some want us to take the reins and run with the vision, while others want to be a part of each decision.” Either way, Schumacher and her team, which she has spent years carefully cultivating into a well-oiled machine that “has a lot of fun and works so well together,” guide

the client through every step of the process—and make it an experience along the way. “We care about the journey, too,” Schumacher says. “I treasure the friendships that have developed from the relationships built while designing a client’s home.” With social media making connections far outside of its Denver home and technology that enables remote management, Andrea Schumacher Interiors has taken on projects in locales throughout the country, from Wyoming to San Francisco to Colorado’s Front Range, and in all manner of aesthetic vernaculars. The consistent element is the homeowner’s personality, shining through in every detail.

ASK THE EXPERT Name influences and inspirations that inform your work. I’m forever indebted to my grandmother, Elizabeth Burger Monath, an artist. She was worldly and absolutely fearless in her approach, and she produced art for more than 50 years. I fondly remember sitting with her in her studio and visiting her exhibitions. She will always be a huge influence on me. I’m actually working on releasing a wallpaper and fabric line using her art as inspiration. How can clients ensure a painless process? Do your homework to identify the type of designer you want to work with. Realize that it will be a long-term relationship. Identify your style, and understand the design process, so you have a clear grasp on the steps that need to take place.

Color packs a punch—especially in kitchens and baths, where a little fresh thinking goes a long way. Today’s au courant designs lean toward one lush hue: green. While associated with nature, the tone also evokes feelings of abundance, serenity, peace and security—all elements we could use right now (and always) in our homes. For designer Raili Clasen, a saturated forest-like shade served as a reference to the past when updating this kitchen in a historic California residence. “It’s an old-world color that seemed right at home in a new build,” says Clasen.

Raili Clasen chose Benjamin Moore’s Hunter Green for the cabinetry in this Coronado, California, kitchen she designed with architect Eric Olsen. Buster + Punch hardware and a Regulator faucet by Waterworks provide pretty brass accents while Community Manufacturing stools offer plush and stylish seating.

PAST & PRESENT RAILI CLASEN

Coronado, the beautiful stretch of land off San Diego, has a storied history as both a resort town to the stars as well as an aviation and naval hub since the early 20 th century. So, when Raili Clasen’s clients asked her to renovate a dilapidated 1927 Dutch Farmhouse on the island that had once belonged to a Navy sea captain, she knew she wanted the design to nod to the home’s traditional roots. railicadesign.com How did you decide on that shade of green for the kitchen cabinetry? As with any vintage home renovation, I feel I have a responsibility to not turn the house into something it isn’t. For me, that means updating the space without it being modern. In terms of paint, I also wanted something somewhat unexpected and this green looked as though it could have been original to the residence—an ‘old’ color that worked wonderfully in the kitchen. Talk to us about the other materials you incorporated. We brought in reclaimed wood for the ceiling, which added a richness to the room while the waterfall marble island provided a light and bright element. Brass accents including the hardware, faucet and backsplash are really a reference to nautical tools and instruments, but they look so lovely with the green cabinetry.

In the dining area, Oscar pendants by Roman and Williams suspend above a Nickey Kehoe table surrounded by both Sawkille Co. and Nickey Kehoe seating.

Where is this dining space located? The kitchen, dining room and living room are actually part of one large area. I still love the open floor plan! Whenever I can, I try to bring nature inside, and the large planters under the windows have brass details that tie everything together. Things need friends, so the greenery here also references the paint used in the kitchen.

PRO TAKE MICK DE GIULIO

Mick De Giulio worked with Michael Abraham Architecture and designer Michael del Piero to create this sleek kitchen in Roselle, Illinois. The Juxtapose Semi-Professional Faucet in Matte Black by Mick De Giulio for Kallista features a pull-down spray head and Boost technology that increases water flow (shown here with Soap Dispenser).

LUXESOURCE.COM

For an elegant yet hardworking kitchen, look no further than Mick De Giulio, who has crafted award-winning spaces for more than 45 years and can teach us a thing or two about form and function. For his latest collaboration with Kallista, the designer kept technology and aesthetics top of mind when creating the Juxtapose collection, which includes a professional kitchen faucet with advanced cleaning features like Sweep spray and Boost. De Giulio focused on streamlined proportions and elegant aesthetics that fold a faucet into a room rather than make it a focal point. Take this Roselle, Illinois, project—a master class in mixed materials and refined touches. Various applications of stainless steel on the hood, countertops and hardware add a richness and reflection, while the iceberg quartzite backsplash keeps the mood light and airy. degiuliodesign.com; kallista.com

NATURAL INSTINCT CAITLIN MURRAY

“The most important principle in design for me is creating a space that you feel good living in every day,” says Caitlin Murray of Black Lacquer Design. But sometimes that idea can be interpreted in very different ways. Take, for example, this Redondo Beach, California, home, where Murray’s husband-and-wife clients had varying desires: One favored Hollywood Regency style and pattern while the other preferred a clean, tonal aesthetic. Eventually they landed on a fun, playful vibe in the powder room space, which Murray transformed into a jewel box of color and charm. No doubt, a win-win! blacklacquerdesign.com Where did you start? Everything was designed around the wallpaper. The clients travel to China and have a business there, so it was important to include something that referenced this connection. The Timorous Beasties wallcovering has such pretty patterning and motifs, which felt like the right fit to the homeowners. I’m always pushing for color, so I was thrilled it worked out!

The blue-and-green palette with pops of red works so well here. I think of greens and blues as reading neutral, so I’m usually able to convince clients to go for these colors. Besides, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by tones found in nature?

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: jessica alexander.

Speaking of color, how do approach it within your designs? I like to mentally establish a palette in my head, because I think that if you don’t stay within certain constraints, the scheme can feel all over the place and disconnected. Here, I used the wallpaper as a road map for the other elements in the bathroom, including the Vola red faucet.

Bemma offers an assortment of bathroom vanities and accessories in several colors and styles that goes beyond the expected, such as the handsome Terra collection (shown). It features a fluted walnut façade, marble or granite countertop, and satin brass base (also available in brushed nickel or matte black). Distinct, indeed. bemmadesign.com

Boutique property development firm Banda offers search, development and interior design under one roof. At Leinster Square, a newly renovated London townhouse, the firm’s elegantly laid-back ethos is on proud display in the dining and reception rooms, where matte-finish paneled walls set the stage for abstract artworks, sensuous sculptures and marble statement pieces.

MAN ABOUT TOWN

There’s something universally captivating about a derelict building with a story to tell. Such was the line of thought that sparked a then-23-year-old Edo Mapelli Mozzi to found Banda, his boutique, London development firm specializing in converting unconventional character properties into bespoke residences. Fifteen years later, with projects sprinkled across the globe and a growing interior design wing (not to mention, a recent marriage to England’s Princess Beatrice of York), Mapelli Mozzi expounds on his distinct vision of residential luxury. bandaproperty.co.uk

In a name: Banda translates to “house” in Swahili. I’ve spent a lot of time in Lamu, Kenya, and source huge amounts of inspiration from the people and way of life there. I wrote my business plan from a “banda” in my early 20s. For me, the word conjures a feeling of simplicity. Design doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to stir emotions and promote well-being. Holistic approach: When I launched Banda, there was a gap in the market for a high-quality search, development and design business. Many developers take a cookie-cutter approach that isn’t true to life. Our aim was to offer something out of the ordinary with quality and experience at the core. Buyers want: There is a definite shift away from prime postcodes and pure new-build schemes. Our clients want personality through design, community and security. These elements work together to form a unique feeling of luxury. Market update: Buyers are extremely serious right now; there’s no window shopping. Likewise, sellers are motivated. Covid has put a lot into perspective and encouraged many to make lifestyle changes. One thing for certain is that properties with open outdoor spaces will be the ones that shine as we navigate this unprecedented time.

Formative influence: My mother worked in commercial real estate and used to drive me around to her job sites. I understood from an early age that how we live and work are intertwined, and how spaces can make us feel.

URBAN AFFAIR

With lifestyle flexibility top of mind, many are seeing the appeal of the pied-à-terre anew. Take the owners of this Manhattan apartment: a Connecticut couple with a passion for the arts. After finding the perfect part-time roost in a historic West Village carriage house studio, they tasked Brooklyn architect Sarah Jacoby with infusing function and romance. An immersive coat of Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black and a wall of custom built-ins (including a sleek compact kitchen) make the space “a fun and special retreat, not just a crash pad,” says Jacoby. “They met in and love New York. This is their ‘reverse country home.’ ” sarahjacobyarchitect.com

Old digs: NYC apartment. New digs: Colonial in the burbs. In her own words: We always knew we’d end up leaving the city, and when we stayed with my husband’s parents during the pandemic, we realized we genuinely liked the suburbs! When our lease came up, we pulled the trigger. Besides many coats of fresh paint, so far we’ve wallpapered and updated the kitchen. Eventually, we’d love to gut the bathrooms, but…one day at a time.

Old digs: 1930s bungalow. New digs: Larger 1930s bungalow. In his own words: I recently got married, and my home was a bit small for two. L.A.’s market, amazingly, was thriving during Covid, so we struck while the iron was hot. I love a California Spanish Revival and our new home has it all: a curved staircase, grand rooms and great natural light. It’s so different (and exciting!) to design with a partner. It will be custom, curated and fabulous.

Old digs: Downtown apartment. New digs: 700-square-foot cottage. In her own words: We always wanted to explore small-footprint living. Plus, we were tired of renting! Renovating during a pandemic (we’ve redone the layout and landscaping) has been interesting, but given our desire for a simpler life, it only strengthened our confidence in creating intimate moments and outdoor living spaces that allow us to thrive as a family.

Quarantined in their home last spring, Chad Dorsey’s clients had a revelation. The crafts room of their Dallas home was languishing unused: Could Dorsey turn it into a getaway for the grown-ups? “The entire space was inspired by the idea of cocktails and wine,” the designer explains. Envisioning a bar with all the glamour of a swank night out on the town, he devised a moody, burgundy scheme, selecting Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal to lacquer the millwork. Adding further sparkle, Dorsey designed a hammered brass and Calacatta viola marble bar illuminated by a crystal chandelier from a Parisian hotel. The result? An invigorating idyll when cabin fever sets in—one bound to delight guests when safe, as well as future buyers seeking the ultimate at-home escape. chaddorseydesign.com

Architect Max Strang amongst the citrus trees on his family property (left). A circa 1930s aerial photo of Gapway Grove with Lake Medora in the foreground (below). Adams Estate, Strang’s grandparents’ 1942 Georgian Revival home turned events venue (bottom).

ORIGIN STORY

In 1935, Charles and Emmie Adams left Detroit for the sleepy railroad town of Lake Alfred, Florida. There, they began building the largest citrus packing house of the time. Fast forward three generations and their grandson—Miami architect Max Strang—saw a unique opportunity for the family property: a wellness community. “It’s definitely a reaction to nearby development,” says Strang, who alongside his siblings, intends to transform the 500 plus-acre parcel into a high-design agrihood. “Groves were dying to citrus blight and being sold off to lackluster sprawl. We felt like we had a critical mass to do something special with, otherwise grandma would come back to haunt us.” Starting with converting their grandparents’ house into an events venue, plans were drawn for five distinct districts arranged around organic citrus groves and freshwater lakes. Units will range from apartments to estates, with styles from “modern agricultural” to “southern farmhouse.” There will be shopping, fine dining, a boutique inn and spa, a museum devoted to Florida citrus, a school, lakefront parks and community farms. Consistent with Strang’s portfolio, sustainability is paramount: Homes will offer solar-paneled roofs and geothermal heating, and rainwater will be harvested. The underlying mission? Build community around a back-to-the-land mindset—something Strang sees a growing market for. “Nowadays we’re divorced from our food and for many, it’s work to physically reach nature. This idea of walking out the door and onto a nature path is creating a new kind of suburbia.” strang.design

PASSIVE DESIGN + BUILDING MEETS LUXURY LIVING n October of 2012, EarthBuilt constructed the walls, as well as some concrete interior features, of a residence in Boulder, Colorado. This project would put the firm—unique in its use of engineered soil to create homes out of rammed earth—on the map. Since then, principals Brett Fitzgerald and Hutch Monteson have guided their team through a plethora of residential and commercial endeavors. Along the way, they have become known for both their innovative, unparalleled

method of construction, and their ability to pair the unique technique with elegant, elevated design. Their goal, no matter the scale, scope or style, is threefold: • Sustainability. EarthBuilt homes are able to naturally heat and cool themselves, significantly reducing energy usage. • Performance. Solid, quiet and low-maintenance, rammed-earth construction checks every box without necessitating overly complicated design features.

• Timelessness. “We hope to create homes that will last many lifetimes and pass from generation to generation,” Fitzgerald says. As they pursue these aims, EarthBuilt’s team members also focus on the client and their aspirational design vision. “We love to see what they bring to the mix, and oftentimes, we implement ideas that stem from what ifs and how abouts,” Monteson shares. “We are also always aware of what the land is offering up and how we can complement it.”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS It has long been an adage that when a woman sets her mind to something, she becomes unstoppable. So often, we see great female leaders combine passion with determination, big visions with detail-oriented execution, artistry with endurance. They are powerhouses through and through, and the business owners, CEOs, presidents and principal designers on the following pages are no exception. Read on to take a valuable peek inside the minds of some of the women bringing boundless creativity and game-changing innovation to Colorado’s design scene.

CHAT WITH THE ENTREPRENEUR •W hat has been one of your biggest career challenges? The rug industry is still a very male-dominated world. When I first started traveling to source the rugs years ago, I had a male business partner and vendors always deferred to him for decisions over me. I had to speak up repeatedly to establish my role as an owner.

Upon being asked to describe a typical workday, Stephanie Holmes says, “For a woman who owns two different showrooms and wears many hats, there isn’t one.” Too true. The companies she speaks of are Integral Thread (formerly Organic Looms Denver), a boutique purveyor and creator of rugs, and Ai STUDiO, a furnishing and cabinetry showroom in Denver Design Center. The fruition of both is the realization of lifelong passion—literally. “As a child, I would pretend to be a designer,” Holmes shares. “This idea came and went, but popped back into my head as college approached, at which point I found a picture of a house I had drawn in 1st grade that said, “I want to be a designer when I grow up.” That serendipity sealed the deal. The rest is a history of working at successful firms in an array of niches before striking out on her own as an interior designer and now, also, a manufacturer of rugs and furnishings.

• If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing? Charity work. A part of our ‘why’ at Integral Thread is to strive for success so that we have the time and money to help others, which fulfills my empathic soul. Top: Featured here are a wool flat-weave, an undyed raised X-Ray and a wool-andsilk kaleidoscope. Bottom, from left to right: A luxurious, blush silk rug is layered here with an all-wool flat-weave, creating a striking juxtaposition of materials and textures. Thick, plush wool Moroccans are cozy underfoot and perfect for warming up a space. Fire in the Sky is a wool-and-silk rug from Integral Thread’s Modern collection. Its luster and color are stunning. The Integral Threads team does the heavy lifting, and they do it in style. All photography by Katy Jo Caringer and Carolyn Jaime

“I strive to shape the future of interior design with integrity and respect for the history of the trade.”

Born into a family of entrepreneurs, which included interior and landscape designers, Laura Iverson’s childhood was, as she says, “an industry tutorial.” She would spend her early days drawing and putting together material palettes in her mother’s design library, and later attend the New York School of Interior Design. Today, she carries on her line’s legacy, applying her natural and learned talents to the creation of gorgeous interior spaces in Colorado and beyond. Though she says every day is different—and she likes it that way—Iverson’s secret to perfecting so many a project with a bespoke approach is this: “I divide each day into two parts: business and creative.” After meetings and site walks and sourcing trips are complete, she always settles in for a block of time dedicated to vision. “These hours are inspiring, energizing and fun; they’re essential to my process.”

PATHS + PROGRESS In discussing the challenges she has faced in pursuit of her career, Iverson points to burnout as the greatest hurdle. “I would say yes to everyone and everything to gain experience and knowledge,” she says. “After a while, it was hard to find time for it all. It was also really difficult to say no, as I was completely invested in my business and clients.” But dedication doesn’t always mean “yes,” and she has a piece of advice for those who might face a similar conundrum, or other sorts. “I would recommend a fabulous business coach or mentor; mine is amazing and has helped shape me as a professional.”

For 20-plus years, Mary Lou Ralston and Kelli Beckish have worked side by side as a mother-and-daughter duo. Together, they’ve redefined an industry that, when they first entered it, included very few women. “I started the company in 1968, after having my two children and wanting to make use of my seamstress background,” Ralston says. “We made draperies in the basement.” Lutek Shading Systems is now a staple in its trade, with more than 10,000 successful projects under its belt. Beckish, who formally joined the company in 1998, adds, “We began humbly, but now manufacture a wide assortment of manual and motorized shading products, for projects ranging from commercial skyscrapers to high-end residences.” As many a pleased client will attest, Lutek is always up for a challenge and new opportunities—evidenced by the tenacity and flexibility of its leaders.

“Our clients often start off asking ‘Do you think you can design something like this?’ The answer is always an enthusiastic ‘Yes, we can!’”

After spending four years as a chemist working in a USDA lab, Jennifer DesJardin woke up one day and thought to herself, “I can’t

do this anymore.” Having always had a passion for interior design, she decided to enroll in classes and embark on a new adventure. “I immediately felt I was home and never looked back.” In fact, she refused to. DesJardin pursued the creation of her design-build firm, Motif Design Solutions, with relentless determination, earning a general contractor’s license and forming a team of experts who are now known as masters of the remodel. While they design interiors for new and old homes alike, combining design and renovation has become a favorite for their firm. “We love to transform once-tired spaces into beautiful, comfortable rooms,” DesJardin says. “Our construction and design teams work with the client from the onset and that collaboration results in a powerful outcome reflective of the client’s distinctive tastes and personality.”

GREATS OF ASPIRATION When asked to talk about women who have shaped her, DesJardin points to four famous figures. •M other Teresa, for her inspirational example of sacrifice in the service of others. She was unyielding in her generosity and stood strong in her faith, against the grain of the modern-day world.

•Q ueen Elizabeth II, for her endurance in the face of adversity, her strong diplomacy of nearly seven decades and also her distinguished style—she defined a generation of fashion.

•F rida Kahlo, for her ability to overcome lifechanging disappointments and heartbreak while maintaining her creative spirit. Setbacks did not define her; they forged her ahead to her ultimate calling.

•H elen Keller, for her strength in using a disability to empower others with similar challenges, along with her immense contribution to improve and protect the civil rights of all.

LESSONS FROM THE LEARNED

VENTURE PAINTING INC. 303.690.1538 | venturepaintinginc.com

Despite growing up in the company and passionately joining in on the work at just 16 years old, Brooke Clanton never envisioned herself running Venture Painting Inc. But when her father passed, she felt an obligation to everyone he had employed and the builders they worked for. She stepped in—even as some naysayers believed she couldn’t handle it—and excelled. In the years since, revenue has doubled, the team has tripled and, most importantly, Clanton has found her footing as a leader. “I love the art and trade of painting, and ensuring that we as a company continue to be synonymous with quality, character and reliability is so rewarding,” she shares. Indeed, Venture is considered a premier resource by industry experts and homeowners alike, throughout Colorado. “Whether you’re looking to paint your exterior or interior surfaces, we will guide you through the selection and application process.”

Top: This gorgeous home exemplifies the power of highend exterior finishes. Right: Doing the stain work on these vintage pillars was a favorite project for Clanton. Far right: Bold at every turn, this bath presented unique creative opportunities.

“I grew up surrounded by strong, independent women who were always resourceful and driven,” Clanton shares. “From an early age, I saw them running and growing businesses, furthering their education and pursuing their interests. One of those I knew was Cheryl Schuette. When I was taking over Venture, she was president of Larsen Development, a custom home builder my father had worked with for years, and she took me under her wing. She was so supportive of me assuming a leadership role and making the business my own. The most valuable lesson she taught me was the importance of networking and forming relationships.”

olorado is a state with a diverse array of aweinspiring views from snow-capped mountain peaks to rusty-red plateaus. So, when a Midwestern couple came upon a site in Steamboat Springs with grassy meadows that flow into a spectacular mountain range topped by a cerulean sky, they knew they had found the perfect spot for a home dedicated to family gatherings. “We wanted to build a place similar to many of the houses we’ve stayed in around the world, where guests would feel like they are visiting a retreat,” the wife says. To create a getaway that would capture the beauty of the setting, the couple hired general contractor John Shively and the team at Vertical Arts Architecture, who designed a glass-lined dwelling with a cantilevered roof that makes for sheltered patios where one can relax and appreciate the scenery while enjoying the mountain air. “They wanted to stretch the house out toward the view and really connect with the land,” says architect Brandt Vanderbosch. While the striking, flat-roofed structure is characteristically modern, the design team went to great lengths to make it comfortable and cozy. “They knew they wanted something streamlined, but they also wanted it to be simple and homey,” says designer and architect Sarah Tiedeken O’Brien. The main gathering spots are located in the center of the home, and the great room—with its large openings to the outdoors—is perhaps the most popular. Per the wife’s request, Tiedeken O’Brien selected a large, welcoming multi-sided Minotti sofa for the space with seating oriented to both the views and the kitchen, making it easy to converse with people preparing meals. “Essentially, we’re creating micro-environments in one room,” Tiedeken O’Brien explains. “If you have 20 people here, there can easily be separate conversations going on in the same area.” A naturalistic feeling was created using materials like Kansas limestone, dark hickory floors and a larch-wood ceiling. These elements are juxtaposed with modern features like the bold blackframed windows. A similar contrast exists in the furnishings. As Tiedeken O’Brien explains, “Most of the primary pieces are done in neutral tones to create an elegant vibe, but we also layered in fun touches like the blue sofa in the recreation room and the colorful pillows throughout.”

186

LUXESOURCE.COM

With a prime outlook to the mountains, the spacious, glass-encased entry offers visitors a welcoming and memorable passage into the home. “It’s completely transparent to the view,” Vanderbosch says. “We’ve been there for parties, and it’s a great space to both welcome and say goodbye to visitors.” Glass meets stone and wood-paneled walls throughout, and the glamorous details shine even brighter against a more rustic backdrop. That’s quite literally the case for an elegant, dangling Bocci fixture in the stairway. “We provided extra width between the stair runs to make sure that the lighting could cascade right down the middle,” Tiedeken O’Brien says. The floating staircase is located just off the entry, and it’s designed with beauty and function in mind. “We wanted it to be light and open,” she says. “But we also ended up installing glass risers between the treads because the owners have little dogs and they didn’t want them to fall through.” It’s just one example of the close collaboration between the clients and the design team, which often pushed the project to new levels. “We could play off each other and challenge each other, and it maximized the design,” the wife says. One of those ideas was paying homage to the site’s history. You can still find the ruins of an old stagecoach stop on the land, and there’s newly installed evidence of the pioneer family who lived here in 1915. “We obtained a historic image taken on the property from the Tread of Pioneers Museum here in Steamboat Springs,” Tiedeken O’Brien says. “It’s a photo of the ranching family who used to live here, taken in front of their cabin. For a fun detail, we printed that image as a huge mural, installed it on the powder room wall, and paired it with a sleek floating countertop.” The couple’s new home represents the next chapter in the land’s history, and they’ve named it Sidney Butte Ranch, a nod to both the little town of Sidney that once existed here and to the place where the wife’s parents were born. When they discovered the land, the couple hoped for a home that would live up to it. The result is so compelling, the homeowners make the long drive to their Colorado dream house frequently throughout the year. “We love to be here, especially given everything that happened recently with the pandemic,” says the wife. “Every time we walk in, we fall in love with the view all over again.”

In the entry of this Steamboat Springs home, a walnut console—designed by the team at Vertical Arts Architecture and fabricated by Twenty1Five—has a minimal profile so as not to interfere with the view. The garden by landscape architect Mitch Rewold blends in seamlessly with the meadow beyond. The door by Castlewood Doors sports a Rockwood GeoMetek handle.

In the great room, a Minotti modular sofa from Studio Como offers various conversation options. Two light-colored swivel chairs provide window-side seating by American Leather. The custom blackenedsteel coffee table—designed by Vertical Arts Architecture and fabricated by Twenty1Five—was sized to fit the space. A long beam table by Peter Thomas Designs from Stēl House + Home doubles as a bench. The rug is by Fabrica Bel Air.

T

here’s a spirit of exuberance in this Bachelor Gulch home that reflects the enthusiasm of the owners, Dallas residents who were overjoyed when they found the location for their longdreamed-about Colorado mountain home. Their goal was to create a resortlike retreat where every inch was utilized. Designer Lucy Oesterle recalls the wife’s enthusiasm for the project, remembering, “When she spotted a dead space on the plans, an area over the garage that was meant for mechanicals, she said, ‘No, no! Let’s make two more bedrooms and bathrooms—grandkid’s quarters!’ ” Architect Scott S. Turnipseed—who also served as the builder on the project and happens to be the mayor of the nearby town of Eagle—says that the directive for maximizing space was matched by the effort to maximize views while also establishing cozy spaces. He accomplished this by playing with scale, giving the kitchen and hearth room lower ceilings for a snug feeling, while letting the great room’s ceiling soar to create what he describes as “a really grand space.” Throughout, materials such as reclaimed beams and moss rock make the home warm and establish a sense of place. Turnipseed—who worked closely with his brother, project manager Jim Turnipseed, and woodworker Joe Masiak—chose to use subtly figured oak wood in the great room for a sophisticated look, while selecting knotty pine for more casual areas like the lower-level family room, bar and ski lounge. “This is a mountain house, so there should be some regionalism—you wouldn’t want Miami here—but it’s a cleaned up, brightened up version and it feels good,” he says. A perfect example of the home’s transitional style, he points out, are the fireplaces, which feature rough-stone chimney breasts with sleek cutlimestone surrounds. “It’s an elegant look in a mountain setting,” Turnipseed adds. It’s a style Oesterle embraced. “Our firm, founded by Eddy Doumas, leans toward a sophisticated mountain look using clean lines, lighter palettes and natural materials,” she explains, noting her

emphasis on layering textures for warmth. And while there were a few visits to Dallas Design District showrooms to test out seating, most elements were sourced locally, with Oesterle taking inspiration from the wife’s collection of magazine clippings. “The goal was to create inviting spaces with room to grow for future grandchildren. As a family, they often hang out in the kitchen and hearth room, where they have breakfast at the counter and enjoy casual meals at the banquette,” she says. “But they also do a lot of entertaining, so the great room was planned for formal gatherings with a dining table that seats 16.” The couple’s private suite is also on the main floor. The bedroom is a tailored space with a four-poster bed that the wife “fell in love with,” says Oesterle, adding that its proportions “worked well with the high ceiling.” The room, done in restful shades of blue, overlooks a creek and shares a terrace with the adjoining study, making it a private, tucked-away retreat. The paneled study is a similarly quiet space based on an image the husband, an oil executive, had seen. Throughout, there is elk imagery, honoring the wife’s wish to celebrate local fauna. The animal motifs don’t end there. “She wanted to make the bedrooms special, so each guest room also has its own Colorado animal: moose, deer, buffalo, fox, bear, rabbit and owl,” Oesterle says of the wife. “It’s subtle, sometimes just a pillow or a book about the animals, but everyone notices and loves it.” In fact, the entire lower level, where most of the guest rooms are located, reflects the region’s adventurous spirit. Because this is a skiin, ski-out home, Oesterle created a locker room with benches at the back door that leads to a clublike lounge and a large family room with a bar and pool table. Just outside is a fire pit, hot tub and, of course, the views that brought the couple here. “We worked with Dennis Anderson on the native plantings that surround the house and blend into the hillside—it’s beautiful,” says Turnipseed. “The whole house is just calming,” adds Oesterle. “It’s good looking but comfortable and there’s something fun in each room, those little things that make a home special.”

Just off the homeowners’ main bedroom is a sitting room where they can “take care of business while away from their home in Dallas,” says designer Lucy Oesterle, noting the Rose Tarlow Melrose House desk. The chairs are by A. Rudin, the bench is by Lee Industries and the rug is from Select Surfaces. The chandelier is by RH.

omething elusive lurks in the portraits by painter Ron Hicks; faces seem caught mid-thought, things unsaid floating in the shapes and colors surrounding them. Such tension is part of the Denver-based painter’s approach to portraiture. A selfdescribed “abstract artist with representational tendencies” whose work is shown at Gallery 1261 and Vail International Gallery, he explores expressive potential to engage the observer. Hicks’ hybrid style evolved from the more traditional approach he first developed while a student. Inspired by classic portraitists, his early works felt atmospheric and romantic. However, the artist became drawn to the subtle boundaries where bodies and backgrounds blurred. “Underneath all of these very representational paintings, I found this whole abstract dialogue happening,” he says. The artist now sees his process as “a call and response” between his representational and abstract forms. Painting with oils, he first applies swaths of color, “and then I allow the painting to tell me what to add.” A clearer direction to a particular face or figure emerges as he layers, shades and even scrapes off color. He sometimes paints from live models but is less interested in exactness. Rather, Hicks focuses on rendering interesting compositions. “It’s more about the relationships of the shapes and the harmony of the tones,” he says. Hicks leaves it to the viewer to interpret the result. It’s a stance he adopted early on when developing his new style after an observer—visibly moved by a piece—said she saw a violent stoning where he envisioned a lover’s embrace. “Everyone has a view. The only thing you can do is hope for a response,” he says. What unites these different interpretations is the vulnerability Hicks infuses in the faces. The artist exposes his own more overtly in works like Still, inspired by his experience of being racially profiled and violently detained by the police. In this painting, in particular, he can only see fear in the figure’s eyes, and the ghost of hands held in surrender. “It brings me back to being pulled over and tackled on the street,” recalls Hicks. He accepts that “someone else might see something different.” What the artist hopes is that these faces urge viewers to go beyond preconceived notions and toward empathetic understanding. Because, he says, “in every one of the portraits, there is a piece of me looking back at you.”

Wearing an Eracism shirt, Ron Hicks poses in his Denver studio (opposite). A sculpture and sketches help the artist work out gesture and posture (left). Like his paintings, Hicks’ palette starts to take on an abstract nature as he mixes and layers colors (below). He describes his work as a hybrid between abstract and representational art (bottom).

hile dining at a storied Denver restaurant, a family’s attention was captured by more than the menu. The scene was Linger, an eatery housed in a century-old building that used to be the Olinger Mortuaries (the current moniker was achieved by turning off the “O” in the neon sign that’s long stood above the building). The couple was entranced by the way the remodeled building captured the view and the eclectic decor. “It was different,” says the husband. “And we wanted something different for the home we wanted to build.” The husband asked their server if he could get the name of the architect, and the next morning he called Boss Architecture. After talking to principal Chris Davis, he laid the idea of working with anyone else to rest. In truth, the couple was thinking more about the land than the house when they purchased a large Wash Park lot with a multi-family building on it. “We wanted a backyard where we could throw a baseball with our kids,” remembers the husband. But soon, the architecture enthusiast looked beyond games to something more. “I grew up in Chicago, and that gave me a taste for good architecture,” he says. The most important directive became creating a home that was modern but also fit in with the historical homes in the area. Noting that their work is all about context, Davis says they were up for the challenge. “We paid a lot of attention to materiality to make it happen,” he says. “For example, the mortar lines are thinner, and the rafters are exposed—just like some of the classic bungalows you see in the neighborhood. We took these features, which were popular 70 years ago, and used them in a modern way.” Architect Kevin Stephenson, co-founder of the firm, says that stripping such classic elements to their essence often provides a fresh take. “There’s the perception that bigger and shinier is better,” he says. “But we find that if you minimize the materiality and the composition of a home, less can be more—and that’s what we did here.”

Inside, a striking staircase connects the home’s three levels: The lower level is a dedicated children’s play zone; the middle level houses a kitchen, family room and living room; and the upper levels are bedrooms. The floating staircase is marked by its open nature, with a handsome wood screen separating it from the kitchen area. “The couple was clear about wanting to be connected with their children, who are still young, while they played downstairs,” says Stephenson. “In our projects, we strive to make things that are functional yet beautiful, and that’s the case with this staircase. It’s celebrated here as a piece of sculpture and walking up and down it is a kinetic experience.” Artistic touches also reign in the kitchen, where a striking black-and-white marble backsplash was chosen because it reminds the husband (a doctor and an artist) of the work of one of his favorite painters, Franz Kline. “We had imagined this as being a solid Carrara marble piece, but when we saw this stone, we spotted a new opportunity,” says Stephenson. “By cutting it and matching it, it became a dramatic feature.” Designer Jessica Dornan, who worked with the couple on all of the spaces save for the living room, says the burnishedbrass accents make the stone sing. “The color of the range hood, the faucet and the counter stools underline this feature as a focal point,” she says. In the living room, furnished with the help of designer Jayna Barber, the focal point—a large, wall-spanning fireplace composed of Summit Brick in Winter Sky—is more than a pretty feature. “It not only adds a nice materiality to the room, but also privacy by screening a view of a nearby neighbor,” says Davis. “We added metal panels to the long firebox to visually extend it and make it fit with the scale of the surround.” As the homeowners envisioned, the backyard— designed by landscape architect Ariel Gelman—has been the scene of many baseball games. “Given how many windows we have, it’s amazing we haven’t broken one,” the husband jokes. Turning serious, he notes, “The value of good design isn’t something I fully appreciated until now. It has made our life at home better and more comfortable.” Consider it a home run.

The owners of this Denver home say they find themselves gravitating to the living room in cooler months, and the Como sectional by Giorgio Soressi for DWR makes a great place to relax. Designer Jayna Barber says the piece is durable for family gatherings but also sophisticated for entertaining. The painting is by Chuck Meyers and the coffee table is by Orren Ellis.

In the dining room, Herman Miller Eames chairs provide seating at the owners’ existing table. The wood screen on the stair not only lets natural light flood the staircase, it allows the owners to keep in contact with their children when they are using the downstairs playroom.

One of the owners wanted an outdoor sleeping area, so the architects provided the space right off the main suite. The rafters, modern takes on the neighborhood’s traditional architecture, were reinforced by general contractor Jeremy Larson to allow the hanging bed, designed by the husband.
