Trash to Treasure

Twisting Tradition

When designer Charlotte Moss creates an Alpine retreat, you can expect luxury textiles, layered patterns and the absence of an expected mountain aesthetic.

This modern Aspen home had light-filled rooms and expansive windows, but it was missing a cozy feeling—here’s how a designer duo helped find its hygge.

In the hands of Steamboat Springs artist Sue Oehme, discarded items such as produce bags and cardboard become vivid works bursting with color and texture.

Classic French architecture meets restrained details and a crisp color palette in this Denver home, and the result is a new and refreshing contemporary style.

Standing beside artist Will Ryman’s towering LongHouse 6 sculpture at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton.

Full Bloom

Pamela Jaccarino VP, Editor in Chief @pamelajaccarino

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: lena yaremenko.

This past summer, I had the pleasure of visiting LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden in East Hampton founded by the brilliant textile designer, Jack Lenor Larsen. Amongst the more than 60 contemporary sculptures, I was particularly taken with artist Will Ryman’s colossal, and fanciful LongHouse 6, an improbable, exaggerated 24-foot-tall cluster of six roses and fallen petals rendered in stainless steel, resin and painted in cadmium red light. The rose remains an idealized symbol for romance, natural beauty and perfection. Yet, Ryman designed his petals with bumps and irregularities. You can clearly detect its hand-worked quality, and his hint to embrace fading beauty, ephemera and the temporary nature of all things. As we forge ahead into the end of another “strange” year for the world, I hope that you will seek out and embrace beauty in all its forms. For artistry and design will always be in bloom, one way or another.

Health, Wellness, Sustainability, Innovation MAKING IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIVES. The kitchen has long been known as the heart of the home. Perhaps that is because it keeps the home, and all who live within it, nourished. And perhaps the appliances central to its design have a far nobler purpose than merely storing, cooking and cleaning. That is certainly what Beko believes. The brand feels that the perfect appliance can empower people to lead healthier lives, while technological advancements—like the use of recycled materials and carbon-neutral manufacturing—help the planet to be healthier, too. The Beko

team is deeply committed to technologies that perform at the lowest levels of energy with the smallest impact on the earth’s resources, because of its overriding belief that you can’t lead a healthy life without a healthy planet. In business for more than 66 years, with products sold in 140 countries, 28 production facilities and 40,000 employees globally, Beko has been a household name in Europe for many years. But recently, the brand has expanded into the United States, bringing its commitment to health and wellness to even more homes.

Preserve Your Produce, Preserve the Planet Imagine keeping your fruits and veggies fresh for up to 30 days, reducing trips to the store and pressure on your grocery budget. Best of all, with less food going bad and ending up in a landfill, it benefits Mother Earth as well. It almost sounds too good to be true, but Beko’s EverFresh+® food-preservation system does just that. Here’s how: • A series of crispers use breathable smart materials and other advances to maximize humidity and minimize moisture loss. • Active Fresh Blue Light™ recreates photosynthesis conditions to preserve the vitamin C in produce, which keeps it tasting its best. • An energy-saving ProSmart™ inverter compressor helps maintain vibrancy and nutritional qualities. • In keeping with Beko’s pledge to make wellness attainable for all, the EverFresh+® system is available throughout the line of Beko refrigerators, not just the top-end models.

CONNECTION: CCY ARCHITECTS

How did you arrive at the concept of connection as your central theme? John Cottle: Like a work of architecture, it evolved. The working title was Conversations, because that is so central to our process, but we eventually chose Connection because that’s what we’re trying to do with our architecture:

BLUEPRINT UPTOWN 240

As newly remote workers look to live a bit closer to their mountain playground, the demand for stylish homes in Summit County is heating up. Uptown 240, slated to open in late 2022, is the town of Dillon’s response, offering 80 condo residences with an elevated aesthetic that’s more urban than mountain. Within the six-story contemporary complex, designed by architect Kathy Parker of Studio PBA, units feature tall ceilings, private balconies and large windows—many with views of Lake Dillon. White polished-quartz countertops and gas fireplaces also come standard, and designer Shari Cahill of PlaSe Design created two sophisticated colorways— one featuring neutral champagne tones, the other highlighting richer hues—for the sleek tile, cabinetry and luxury vinyl floors. Resortworthy amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center, pet areas and, of course, up-close lake and mountain views. uptown240.com

make a specific connection—to people, to the place where a house is sited, and to ethereal environmental aspects, from sunlight to the sound of a river. How did you choose 10 homes from CCY’s 50-year archive? Jenny Trumble: Many of the homes have compelling stories—about how families wanted to live in the spaces; how the homes help them connect to one another and the landscape; and how the designs are informed by traditions that have been in families for generations. What else do you hope readers will take away from the book? JC: There is a common misconception that noteworthy architecture is loud and proud; a big sculpture that tends to thump its chest. One of the strong messages of the book is that architecture can be deferential. Gage Reese: Sometimes the quiet nature of a solution is more revolutionary than it may appear.

Connection: CCY Architects, the Aspenbased firm’s new monograph, gives readers more than artful aesthetics to which to aspire. By highlighting a process that forges deep connections among architecture, people and places, it also presents a way of thinking about design that can seem almost radically personal in the era of the ubiquitous modern farmhouse. MEET THE MAKER LAURA GOODSON

Describe putting paint to canvas for the first time. I didn’t really have any vision. I just started painting. When I was young, my grandpa had taught me how to draw a cowboy hat and for whatever reason, that just came through. Even now, when

I start a piece, I don’t think about who or what I’m painting. The cowboy hat starts coming down and whatever is inside of me starts coming through; things that I didn’t know were there. The cowboy is such a potent symbol. What does it mean to you? I think I am a cowboy at heart. And I think it’s a representation of my childhood: where I grew up, who I was surrounded by and what I aspired to be. Those were the people you looked up to. You’ve been painting for nearly four years now. How has your work evolved? Initially, I really liked single brushstrokes. On a hat or bandanna, the brush is coming down and then it’s done. But I recently started using acrylic, and with acrylic you can go back and add a whole new layer, so that has expanded my art brain. My latest launch of new work also explores the sense of division I feel within myself—roles and responsibilities versus my actual identity—so there are diptychs portraying two sides to the cowboy, and a triptych that divides him into a hat, face and chest. My work has turned more inward, to lift the veil of who the cowboy is.

The origin story of Laura Goodson’s modern paintings of Western characters and landscapes is almost too far-fetched to believe. Determined to impress a new girlfriend with a passion for the arts, the South Texas native decided to pick up a paintbrush for the first time in her life. Using jet-black oil paint and her soon-tobe-signature bold strokes, she swiped a cowboy, a female silhouette and a cactus onto three canvases. Goodson’s girlfriend showed the paintings to the proprietor of Will Leather Goods in Houston, and he proposed a pop-up show for the following weekend, giving Goodson just four days to create her first body of work. She delivered, completing 12 canvases in one night—and the bona fide artist, who now calls Denver home (and the girlfriend her fiancée), has been painting for devoted collectors ever since. Here, she reveals the depth behind her deceptively simple designs. lauragoodsonart.com

ASPEN STREET LODGE Travelers ready to return to Aspen’s slopes have a sophisticated new lodging option to consider this year. Aspen Street Lodge offers the look and feel of a private home with amenities that only a luxury hotel can offer, from a resident chef and mountain guide to painting sessions with acclaimed Aspen artist Kelly Peters. Designed by local architecture firm Forum Phi and built by Madigan + Company, the eco-conscious building—located on the central-Aspen site previously occupied by the Hotel Lenado—is clad with stone and charred cedar chosen to mimic the bark of aspen trees. Inside, designer Debra Owens gave the nine lodge rooms, two-bedroom penthouse apartment and intimate common spaces a “modern industrial feel with a luxe twist,” she says, by juxtaposing white Venetian plaster walls against warm wood and blackened-steel finishes, and clean-lined furnishings by Poliform, Holly Hunt, Liaigre and Cassina with chunky fabrics, shearlings and leathers. Sculptural lighting from Apparatus, Roll & Hill and RBW illuminates artful wallcoverings, including hand-painted Porter Teleo designs, “creating a tactile and visually stunning place to relax and recharge,” Owens says. For its first full ski season, the lodge will offer full buyouts only. aspenstreetlodge.com

Childhood observations of the women in her family sewing, embroidering and crocheting together fuel Argentina-born, Boulder-based artist Ana María Hernando’s explorations of the female experience, which take shape in mediums ranging from delicate embroideries to massive cascades of boldly colored tulle. In Fervor: Ana María Hernando (through January 2), such works are combined with poetry and collected birdsong, giving form to feminine power and the beauty of the natural world.

Seeing the Invisible Innovative art requires an innovative exhibition. Seeing the Invisible (through summer 2022), a collection of contemporary artworks created with augmented reality technology, is the first show of its kind to be developed collaboratively by multiple botanical gardens around the world. The commissioned works—by an international roster of artists including Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui and Sigalit Landau—are displayed simultaneously in 12 outdoor settings in six countries and experienced via an iPhone or Android app.

The Indelible Garden: Prints by Taiko Chandler A striking sense of movement defines The Indelible Garden: Prints by Taiko Chandler (December 11, 2021–April 3, 2022), which highlights the Denver-based printmaker’s works on paper and Tyvek. To create the latter, Chandler prints densely layered colors and organic, abstract forms on flexible sheets of Tyvek, then transforms the synthetic construction material into delicate shapes and patterns by cutting away the negative spaces and artfully manipulating the partially transparent forms into sitespecific installations.

Well & Good

“Most of us spend 90 percent of our lives indoors, and two-thirds of that is in our homes,” says designer Tamara Magel. “Yet very few of us consider the impact on our well-being.” It’s a staggering and pertinent statistic that has inspired Magel and others to make wellness a cornerstone of their design philosophies: How can we build a house that not only looks good but also creates a sense of peace, beauty, security and comfort? For Magel, this started with adopting a 10-step healthy living approach. “A truly healthy home goes beyond clean materials; it incorporates our basic human needs for light, clean air and food, a quiet environment and a peaceful atmosphere,” she explains. In her work, this translates to non-toxic and eco-friendly paints, natural stone and elements (water, clay and grasses), natural

light sources and feng shui. “I tend to use less furniture and larger pieces to create ease of flow from room to room,” she says. “I start with symmetry and add strategically placed organic curves.” Symmetry is also key for architect Don Ruggles, an idea he explores in his book Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture, where he maintains that the most fundamental geometric pattern is the three-point facial pattern—two eyes and a mouth. What may seem like an abstract concept for the home is actually quite relevant: “The three-bythree pattern occurs over and over again in architecture and art,” says Ruggles. “Your brain will intuitively process it in an efficient way, which creates less stress and more rest.” The architect mentions the classic fireplace set up, in which the firebox opening is the center, and the mantel forms the upper left

and upper right of the design. Notice the pattern once, and you’ll see it everywhere: a headboard with two nightstands; the kitchen range and hood framed by cabinets; a front door surround; and so on. In California, architect Jennifer Hoppel is championing beauty and sustainability. With her firm, Burdge Architects, she just completed the first carbon-neutral luxury estate in Malibu, aptly named Zero One. “You don’t have to sacrifice design or luxury to achieve a structure that is good for you and the environment,” she says, noting the residence’s intentional siting, outdoor courtyard, sustainable garden, FSCcertified wood and even its less sexy (but no less important) ventilation system that promotes healthy air. “Being green is not this big, scary endeavor,” says Hoppel. “It’s attainable. It’s the way of the future.”

Past Perfect ARTISTRY AND ANCIENT TECHNIQUES COMBINE TO CREATE FURNITURE THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.

Father-son duo Philip and Kelvin LaVerne often buried their works in special soil, which would age the metal and give it the appearance of antiquity, like the piece shown here.

LUXESOURCE.COM

It’s been more than 30 years since the last piece of furniture left Philip LaVerne Galleries, but the demand for the richly detailed tables, consoles and cabinets has only grown. This wouldn’t surprise their creators, a father-and-son team who knew they were crafting pieces with an enduring appeal even as they made them. Philip LaVerne and his son, Kelvin, were able to use their prodigious artistic gifts to create sculptural bronze and pewter pieces prized by designers and collectors. Their story begins in the late 1800s when Philip’s father, Max, immigrated to Brooklyn from Eastern Europe. “Max was a muralist, and he painted the ceilings of lobbies and churches,” says Evan Lobel, the owner of Lobel Modern NYC and co-author of a forthcoming book about the LaVernes. “When Philip was a child, Max would take him to the library, open an art book and ask his son to copy the images there. From an early age, Philip had a great talent and appreciation for art.” Those skills and inclinations were passed to Kelvin who, after graduating from art school in the 1950s, joined his father in creating one-of-a-kind pieces and selling them in a Midtown Manhattan showroom. The surfaces of their furniture frequently carry vignettes

weeks in soil the artists described as coming from the “Far East,” allowing it to oxidize and develop colors. The LaVernes monitored the process, encouraging hues with chemicals and setting them with wax when they achieved the desired shade. When unearthed, they would freeze or torch surfaces to develop patina or brightness. “The LaVernes were really advanced for their time. Their techniques, which they said were inspired by ancient practices, were never divulged,” says Merrill. “They were essentially painting with bronze and pewter, doing things that aren’t easily copied.” In 1987, Kelvin closed the studio doors and took up photography. But, more than three decades later, the LaVerne legacy continues to grow. According to Darin Geise, owner of Coup D’Etat, the singular nature of the work explains its enduring popularity. “People have a new appreciation for LaVerne pieces, and they are having a moment,” he says. Lobel agrees, noting: “They used to run magazine ads calling their pieces the ‘antiques of the future’—and they were absolutely right.”

Current prices for LaVerne pieces, like the rare Tao Cabinet (below) and a table from their first series focused on historical civilizations (left), bear out the statement. Todd Merrill notes recent auctions that have seen LaVerne works command top dollar. “In early 2000, Sotheby’s sold a Bathers cabinet for $90,000,” he notes. “If you had one today, you could ask whatever you wanted for it.”

LaVerne Everlasting DESIGNERS ON TODAY’S APPEAL OF THESE VINTAGE PIECES. “ At once avant-garde and traditional, a LaVerne work is always a fantastic focal point to any interior. The burnished bronze and verde gris patina adds a touch of deceptive antiquity and the plateaux quietly reveal a bas-relief scene akin to the face of an antique coin.” –JON DE LA CRUZ

“ W hat drew me to their furnishings is that they can work anywhere—either in a traditional or a modern interior. They are just as beautiful in either setting.” –JENNIFER COHLER MASON

“ T he craftsmanship of a LaVerne piece is amazing. Every detail is elegantly articulated and every time you study it, you see something new. You have to wonder, how did they do it?” –JACK LEVY

depicting life in ancient civilizations or scenes from mythology. “They were a very intellectual family,” notes Lobel. “They were interested in history, religion and music. Their designs were inspired by the subjects they loved deeply.” Their top-secret techniques created a look that’s immediately recognizable. Todd Merrill of Todd Merrill Studio describes the process in his book, Modern Americana: Studio Furniture from High Craft to High Glam, as a multistep endeavor involving hand carving a design in bronze and overlaying that with thin layers of pewter and more bronze. After that, a piece would be buried for six

NATURE-NODDING GREENS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY. GARDEN CLUB “Green is my favorite color in all areas of my life,” shares Chicago-based designer Alexandra Kaehler, who accordingly envisioned her pantry as an emerald jewel box. Leaning into her home’s leafy setting, Kaehler selected Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green, favoring a high-gloss finish over lacquer for the character of its brushstrokes. “I love the concept of bringing greenery inside,” continues the designer, noting that clients are increasingly sharing in her penchant. “After being stuck inside our houses, I think people are extra hungry for an outdoor connection, and translating that idea indoors visually is really comforting.” alexandrakaehler.com

INTO THE WOODS In a surprise to designer Marie Flanigan, Harry Potter spurred a chic color scheme— specifically, the series’ Forbidden Forest, which Flanigan’s young client requested her bedroom elicit. “Her inspiration was a lush, deep wood, and we used a moody palette to execute that,” Flanigan says. After reviewing four kindred paint samples (her own best practice), the designer opted for Sherwin-Williams’ Rocky River, pulling its strong saturation across the trim and ceiling. “Evoking nature breaks the divide between the indoors and outside,” she explains. “Here, the green envelops you and makes you feel like you’re sleeping among the trees.” marieflanigan.com

Maximalist color has gone mainstream in recent years, and the notion of “neutral” has evolved in turn. Just ask designer Nina Magon, who saw designing a bedroom at the 2021 Kips Bay Palm Beach Decorator Showhouse (top) as an opportunity to show the world that pink can be just as restful as the usual suspects. “Color is so important right now because it elicits emotions,” she muses, adding of Benjamin Moore’s Rosy Tan, “we wanted soft and cozy, and I think we nailed it.” Designer Stephanie Sabbe credits the success of this color family as a neutral canvas to its natural connotations. In her clients’ Nashville multipurpose room (bottom left), she used Benjamin Moore’s Pumice Stone, which nods to a sunbaked desert. Beyond sea and sky, “anything in earth tones is calming,” she insists. “For everyday living, surrounding yourself with fresh colors like these brings happiness,” chimes in designer Melanie Turner, who outfitted her clients’ Atlanta living room (bottom right) in Benjamin Moore’s golden Windswept Canyon. After decades of greige living, designers and clients are in agreement: dusty shades of peach, mauve, rust and rose offer a thrilling alternative.

Stormy beginnings: Thirteen years ago, Alex Geriner, founder of furniture company Doorman, discovered an old cypress door that had been salvaged from Hurricane Katrina. Inspired, he repurposed it into a bed. Do the hustle: Geriner began selling other repurposed pieces, and soon, “It became this fun side hustle,” he says. Five years later, he fully committed to the company. Thinking global, staying local: Doorman is rooted in the Crescent City, but focuses on the bigger picture. “Home is more than just four walls and the roof. It’s the planet that we stand on,” he says. Beyond recycling: Geriner pivoted from repurposing old pieces (“reclaimed wood is hard to find these days,” he notes) to broader environmental initiatives such as working with nearby lumber mills that sustainably harvest trees and turning to renewable energy. “Solar power is about 80 to 90 percent of our production energy,” Geriner adds. Modern history: “We pay homage to the style of New Orleans,” says Geriner, “but we’re bringing it into the 21st century.”

BLACK CROW STUDIOS Long Beach, California

Ahead of the curve: When Tracy Hiner launched Black Crow Studios, an art-driven custom wallpaper company, she set the path for the digitally printed mural companies that would follow in her footsteps. Doing more: “I was disillusioned with the luxury design industry,” she says. “Things happening in the world weren’t being addressed.” So Hiner started donating 20 percent of her Caliber Collection proceeds to a gun buy-back program. Rebellious streak: “I started thinking I could do this with all my collections,” she says. In 2019 the designer launched Rebel with a Cause, which she describes as a way to keep making art while making a difference. No limits: Hiner donates 50 percent of her personal profits to a range of charities. Each of her wallpaper collections is dedicated to a different cause, including justice programs, inner city arts and animal rescue. “I found charities that mean something to me,” she says. “I want to make the biggest impact.”

DUCHATEAU Soul searchers: In 2006, Benjamin Buzali and Misael Tagle started talking. They had noticed the difference between aged European hardwood floors versus that of new stained wood. “There’s a cannon to wood that’s changed over time,” explains Patrick Bewley, vice president of marketing. “There’s a soul to it.” Soon the luxury flooring company, DuChateau, was born. Thinking differently: DuChateau uses a combination of smoking, water bath and hand-scraping techniques, which not only creates the desired aged-inplace look, but it’s also sustainable. “We’ve always stayed away from formaldehyde and products with emissions,” explains Bewley. “And we’ve never used wood that’s illegally harvested.” Upping the ante: The company’s DuGood Initiative followed suit a decade later. “We were heartsick by the California wildfires,” says Bewley. In a partnership with the National Forest Foundation, DuChateau plants one tree for every floor sold. A portion of those trees goes to forests impacted by the wildfires. Fierce ambition: “We’ve planted more than 25,000 trees,” says Bewley. “Sustainability is our core value.”

Ingrid says:

Seamless indoor/outdoor living is an essential part of life for Coloradans. Having the beautiful mountains as a focal point makes our clients’ daily rituals remarkable.

community, which lets them live their best Colorado lives.”

+ Spotlight on 4D Design

“Good design is buildable design,” Sean says. “With that in mind, we are committed to 4D design because anything can be drawn on a page, but to have it come to life in 4D creates an environment that is truly a work of art.”

+ Colorado, Naturally

Meadow Mountain Homes is inspired by the natural world, which they incorporate into their distinctive designs. “We love integrating organic materials into our homes,” Ingrid adds. “When native stone and warm woods are combined with glass and steel the results are soothing and spectacular.”

EXISTENTIAL EXPRESSION Like many creatives before him, fashion designer-turned-artist Rogan Gregory looked to the female being as muse for his “Fertility Form” series. The stainless steel and bronze sculptures—nestled in an antique velvet-lined cabinet from ABC Home—are made of multiple parts stacked together and represent the many different cycles of life. These pieces, along with the salt & pepper shaker set (bottom center), exemplify Gregory’s focus on lines, proportion and asymmetrical harmony. r-and-company.com; abchome.com

NATURAL WONDERS En masse or on their own, Creel and Gow’s Stone and Mineral Spheres captivate, as do the many other exotic finds in the Upper East Side’s treasure-trove storefront. Ranging from rock crystal and zebra agate to green fluorite and orange calcite, each sphere is mounted on custom brass stands in varying heights. Seen here in an oak cabinet from antique purveyor Olde Good Things, the colorful, solid globes beg to be collected and arranged. creelandgow.com; ogtstore.com

BON APPÉTIT “This is a legitimate cook’s kitchen, but it doesn’t necessarily look like one,” explains Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson of the area she designed for a serious Atlanta-based home chef. With the client’s wish list in hand—sous vide, induction cooktop, steam oven, compost bin and more—Ferguson set about understanding how her client would use these features to deliver a dream kitchen.

LUXESOURCE.COM

The design scheme started with a dynamic quarter-figured sycamore wood wall, which conceals appliances like the refrigerator, freezer and juice bar. To warm up the space and continue the organic feel, Ferguson opted for an oak island with delicate walnut dovetail details and a handsome butcher block. She added walnut hardware throughout for cohesiveness. Varying the materials palette, the designer incorporated patinated metal for the hood, cabinetry and backsplash, which also hides a storage compartment.

But the pièce de resistance is a custom glass panel flanking the range that features gold wallpaper and fabric on the backside— a decorative focal point in the room. Notes of rose gold and brass in the fittings and finishing details balance the gray tones and brighten up the space. Ferguson’s best advice for a flawless kitchen is to ensure client conversations about functionality happen upfront. “Tell me how you plan to live and cook in the space, and then I can show you how to use it beautifully,” she says. harrisondesign.com

In an Atlanta kitchen, Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson worked with Block & Chisel on the cabinetry and included Fusion Blue Quartzite on the countertops. A Wolf range, rose gold Dornbracht faucets and Lutron shades complete the look.

SILVIA FRIGERIO, Managing Director “For me, the key word is ‘tailor-made,’ which is something I come back to every time I design a kitchen. When working on this Los Angeles project, I requested a list of the appliances the homeowners use daily, as they are avid cooks, and then incorporated pocket doors to conceal small appliances, double ovens and a coffee machine. The result is both sculptural and modern.” boffi.com

LIVING

“Entertaining has become more intimate and personal,” says artist-designer Sarah Espeute, whose hand-embroidered table linens depict playful tableaus of shared meals. “Above all,” she adds, “there’s a desire for novelty now—a wish to travel through the table—hence the word ‘tablescape!’ ”

TABLE TALK

Artist Sarah Espeute doesn’t take setting the table too seriously. Just look to the chorus of snails, turnips, wildflowers and the like, which flit between hand-stitched place settings on her whimsical linens. From a shared studio space in Marseille, France, Espeute embroiders these convivial scenes on thrifted, often century-old bed sheets conceived anew.

For Espeute, the joy in her chosen medium lies in its dualisms—her linens are nostalgic and modern; dressy and lighthearted; decorative and utilitarian. She admires blurred boundaries in design. “Multidisciplinary artists with a broad practice have reinforced the idea that there is no limit in creation,” she says, citing the work of painters like Cy Twombly and Raoul Ubac, and the architecture of Luis Barragán and Carlo Scarpa, amongst others, as inspirations. While a multidisciplinary artist herself (Espeute designs furniture and paints), there’s something about the handmade character of embroidery— and the act of gathering around the dining table—that comforts and captivates her imagination. “I think embroidery really touches people,” she muses, adding, “it’s wonderfully sentimental.” oeuvres-sensibles.fr

LUXESOURCE.COM

table talk photos: courtesy sarah espeute. french lessons photos: matthieu salvaing, courtesy rizzoli. the huntress photo: sofi perazzo.

Like many strokes of ingenuity, Oeuvres Sensibles (meaning “sensitive objects”), Espeute’s line of tablecloths, runners and napkins, was born from necessity. Coveting unique cushions and curtains for her own home, she turned inward, resourcefully picking up an embroidery needle—and the stars aligned. When a friend gauged her interest in creating a tabletop textile for an art exhibition, “I imagined a trompe l’oeil meal and things took off from there!” she recalls.

FRENCH LESSONS

Dior Maison artistic director Cordelia de Castellane has catalogued her flair for hosting in a new book: Life In A French Country House: Entertaining For All Seasons (Rizzoli). Previewing the bounty of inspiration within, here, de Castellane shares two of her signature moves for a sui generis fête. On linens. I love to order embroidered vintage tablecloths on eBay and dye them in my washing machine. How cool is it to have formal linens dyed a shocking hot pink? Contradiction keeps design interesting.

A tabletop vignette displays de Castellane’s maximalist tendencies. “The Saint-Louis crystal glasses and Clichy vases set the stage for this winter table—I even cheated by dipping certain flowers in dye!” she notes.

THE HUNTRESS

“My grandmother used to set the most impeccable tables,” recalls Federika Longinotti Buitoni. “To this day, I remember the gorgeous ceramic parrots she used as centerpieces, and the homemade clementine ice cream that she served on perfectly carved clementine skin. I learned never to underestimate the details, as this is often all people remember.” With such early-seeded reverence for the art of entertaining, the fact that Longinotti Buitoni grew up to found Collecto—a retailer dedicated to aggregating the finest tabletop wares from around the globe—is apropos. Traversing Italy for delicate glassware, France for Limoges porcelain and Mexico for handmade pottery, Longinotti Buitoni is building a veritable melting pot of luxury, artisan-driven homewares, with a new service wing offering bespoke, soup-to-nuts dining and kitchenware curation. Grandmother, we posit, would approve. collectoworld.com

On decor. You don’t need flowers to create an exciting centerpiece. In summer, I’ll fashion a runner out of ripe tomatoes only. For the holidays, I’ll fill crystal bowls with colorful candies. And there is no more beautiful focal point than candles—lots and lots of them in different shapes and sizes.

ART OF THE EDIT STYLIST MIEKE TEN HAVE DISHES ON ENTERTAINING AU COURANT.

Trick for charming guests: My mother always serves a little bit of soup in a teacup or finger bowl as an hors d’oeuvre. I think it’s such a clever and a fun way to repurpose tableware that isn’t used very often anymore—and more interesting than cheese and crackers! Finds you’re crushing on now: I collect a lot of antique plates, but my contemporary Alberto Pinto faux bois chargers are a favorite. While a classic motif, the scale makes them look more modern than grand-mère. I almost always reach for colored glassware—amethyst, emerald and aquamarines are my go-tos. And nobody does unique block prints like Gregory Parkinson. His colors are so luscious and interesting. Always in your pantry: I have tapers in every color of the rainbow. I mix them up seasonally and according to the table’s scheme. Hosting faux pas: Serving dinner too late. On Mieke’s holiday table: Gregory Parkinson’s hand-loomed pine zest ikat napkins (top), Pinto Paris’ faux bois buffet plate (center), Nason Moretti’s Idra twisted striped water glass (above) and vintage crystal-and-sterling swan salt and pepper wells from Chairish (right).

Best hostess gift: Not arriving early! Go-to for mixing things up: It’s fun to dine in an unexpected area, like a little card table in the living room. Moving locations introduces a feeling of novelty and excitement.

Advice for a spirited table: I focus on the mix of patterns and styles more than anything else. I have a collection of tableware, textiles and decorative objects (fanciful salt cellars, for example) and I love to use them in interesting combinations, particularly mixing aesthetic eras and cultures. I don’t like when tables are too “pretty.” There should be contrast.

Atop Malaika’s hand-printed Carnation place mat and flanked by the delicately embroidered Julia napkin rests a new pottery plate produced for the brand by artisans in the village of Tunis in Fayoum.

DREAM WEAVING

“From the outset, we were determined to create a business model with social impact,” says Goya Gallagher, who alongside Margarita Andrade, co-founded Malaika—a Cairo-based atelier championing traditional Egyptian crafts. At launch, the company covered embroidery tuition for local women, but the mission expanded with their retail success. In 2018, the pair opened Threads Of Hope, a free trade school, which trains community members for Malaika employment.

In both motif and materiality, the brand’s offerings—from silk-screened place mats to intricately stitched napkins and handmade pottery—celebrate the abundance of Egypt’s natural and cultural history. Ultimately, they hope this cycle of preserving heritage craft extends beyond the hands that create, down to the consumer. Notes Gallagher, “every piece in our collection has been carefully designed as a timeless family heirloom to pass on for generations to come.” malaikalinens.com

Over the past year, people spent more time at home than ever before. As a result, they demanded more from their spaces and homes began to transform into multipurpose environments. Micky Schlagel, founder and owner of Roombldr, recognized this evolution. “I saw a need to create a business that took the same approach as premium kitchen and bath firms, only for at-home fitness centers,” Schlagel says. “Health and exercise are two of the most important aspects of daily life, so why not invest in a home gym in the same way you would the rest of your house?” Roombldr was born from this concept and the entrepreneur’s combined careers in fitness and building as well as his partners’ 30 years of experience in fitness. “Though nontraditional,” Schlagel adds, “Roombldr’s practice relies on expert knowledge that allows us to serve our clients with state-of-the-art materials, equipment and designs.”

Roombldr uses technology to craft virtual room designs that give clients a glimpse of their ideal home gyms. “Once we have the client’s floor plan, we create renderings based on their workout goals, style, preferences and budget,” Schlagel says. Roombldr then sources equipment from a large portfolio of premium brands. These products are best sellers or have a high level of interaction through the likes of live and recorded classes, smart watch integration, exercise data collection and touch-screen capabilities. More specific requests, like golf simulators and other recreational activities, can be incorporated into the design, as well. “There are some amazing products and technologies in this up-and-coming category,” Schlagel says. “Our overall goal is to help people build the fitness room of their dreams.”

T

he owners of this Aspen home live primarily in Houston, but they have a special place in their hearts for the Colorado Rockies where, with help from their longtime designer, Charlotte Moss, they created a relaxed and elegant getaway for themselves, their two children and three grandchildren. The wife notes that the promise of family time was the main reason they purchased the home. “We all love skiing, golfing, hiking and fishing,” she says. But although the clan appreciates the great outdoors, their Colorado home is free from an expected mountain aesthetic. “They wanted something that felt like Aspen, but that wasn’t clichéd,” says Moss. Inside the stone-clad house originally designed nearly 20 years ago by architect John Rowland of Rowland+Broughton, the rooms are filled with a welcoming mixture of warm colors, rich textures, comfortable upholstered furniture and some antiques. Having designed their Texas abode, Moss knows the owners well, noting their taste, like her own, runs traditional. “I like patina and I like layering—and so do my clients,” she says. The entrance to the house, with its high ceiling, limestone floor and steps that lead to the living room, is striking, but it is the backside of the dwelling—home to the living room, main bedroom and kitchen—where something magical happens. Moss notes that, in these areas, the residents enjoy views of Aspen Mountain and, because the sky changes all day long, the spaces provide front-row seats to an ever-evolving nature show. In the living room, with its 22-foot-high beamed ceiling, fabric in warm tones of terra cotta and camel covers the furniture, harmonizing with the client’s antique rug and the existing stone fireplace, over which the family added a Bavarian deer head. “The goal was ‘warm,’ ” the designer says. “I would never consider using cool colors in a room where everyone goes after skiing.” Moss also lightened up the dining room, where she replaced dark wood paneling with blue-green plaster walls, a limestone fireplace mantel and a pair of ironand-brass sconces.

192

Moss made the biggest changes in the kitchen, which she essentially gutted, replacing a large fireplace with a wall of cabinets and adding a dining table along with an upholstered banquette. The palette of the room went from dark and heavy to light and bright, with the walls and cabinets painted a color the designer calls “French vanilla,” and the addition of a colorful Portuguese tile backsplash. She also added an arched doorway to the living room to better connect the spaces. The kitchen, Moss explains, is how the family enters the house after coming in through the garage and then the mudroom, which has the same pigmented-plaster walls as the dining room, along with engravings of birds of prey and a wall of lockers for sporting equipment. A sense of serenity characterizes the private spaces in the home, such as the main bedroom, with its walls of linen painted in shades of pale green, gray and white. In one corner of the room, a comfortable armchair and a lamp offer the husband a place to read late at night, and an adjacent, wood-paneled study with a fireplace provides a cozy spot for him to work. But downstairs, in the large family room, a sense of lively merriment reigns. There, Moss designed a red leather-covered, brass-trimmed bar, on the other side of which is a high-tech golf simulator— not a surprising addition given the family’s enthusiasm for the sport. Off the family room, a powder room is animated with a paper-backed fabric in a playful pattern that the designer likens to a “blown-up version of a Moroccan tile.” Moss recalls that the wife said she never thought a house as large as this one could be warm until she saw what the designer had created. The key is a design that defers to what Moss describes as “breathtaking views.” As she says, the rooms “frame the landscape” rather than compete with it, while also fostering the sense of community she observed the first time she met the family at the abode. As she recalls, “everyone was gathered in the kitchen, making pancakes together.” Now, the husband says the family tends to spend the most time in the living room, but the feeling is no less amiable. “With the children on the floor, playing games, it’s more than a living room,” he says. “It’s a family room.”

For the Aspen home of longtime clients, designer Charlotte Moss applied the classic aesthetic they share. It’s seen here in the dining room, where a collection of blue-and-white pieces adorn a table covered with a Pindler fabric. The draperies are made of a Stroheim textile, and the walls are pigmented with Farrow & Ball’s Castle Gray.

Warmth was Moss’s goal in the living room, as seen in the sectional’s terra-cotta Kravet chenille upholstery. The wing chairs from Jerry Pair are covered in a kilim-inspired Pierre Frey fabric, while the draperies, made of a botanical-print textile by Bennison, frame the expansive view toward Aspen Mountain.

In Aspen, a pair of designers make a couple’s contemporary mountain home inviting.

WARM EMBRACE

Interior Design: Joe McGuire and Matthew Tenzin, Joe McGuire Design Home Builder: Thaddeus Eshelman and Jimmy Terui, TE Builders

T

here’s something almost primordially comforting about living in the mountains. In the quiet seclusion of the surrounding landscape, time seems to slow down so one can truly savor moments of laughter and joy, swapping stories by the fire. This is what Craig and Mariah Morris craved most for their Aspen home. Though they love the contemporary structure—with its bright, voluminous rooms and expansive windows that perfectly capture views of the awe-inspiring mountainside—they also craved something more intimate and cozier. They turned to designers Joe McGuire and Matthew Tenzin to cultivate close-knit gathering spaces perfect for cocktail hours and family dinners. Originally built in 1977, the mountain abode was renovated in 2019 by the previous owner into its sleek statement of glass and sunlight, made in consultation with architect Scot Broughton. In their work, McGuire and Tenzin especially delight in making such grand contemporary structures feel welcoming and human-centric. “People seem to be drawn to us to create cozy interiors in these types of spaces,” notes McGuire. “We balance the architecture and complement it, so it doesn’t feel cold and stark.” The home already provided an inspiring canvas for the designers to explore, and they found able partners in general contractors Thaddeus Eshelman and Jimmy Terui, who also oversaw the 2019 renovation. Collaborating on the new customizations with McGuire and Tenzin “was the bow on the present,” notes Terui. “All of their final touches really put it over the top.” Together, they focused on incorporating new finishes that would add more visual weight to the interior’s broad white walls and pale oak flooring. The abode featured black metal-framed windows and ceiling box beams that cut through the light and airy spaces, and the designers emphasized this juxtaposition by adding a few bolder finishes, such as staining the kitchen cabinetry in a deep ebony hue. The rich color “gives some structure and energy to the space, so it’s not just neutrals,” Tenzin explains. To temper the angularity of the architecture, the designers introduced some curved elements to the interiors. “Right now, we have this desire for

204

LUXESOURCE.COM

softer lines, yet still done in a very contemporary way,” says Tenzin. This was the guiding principle behind selecting the new furnishings and accents: all are unequivocally modern in silhouette, but never too sharp or sleek. Chairs and sofas have rounded backs and arms softened with tactile materials like shearling, wool and saddle leather. Mixing abstract designs with traditional Moroccan weaves, “the rugs are also really special, as they add a lot of comfort and interest,” says McGuire. The couple’s bedroom in particular is a study in tactile layering, with an upholstered bed frame, a fabric-paneled wall and artful Apparatus sconces featuring wefts of horsehair. “Textures were a key part of adding in that warmth to the home,” notes Tenzin about their overall approach. The designers also kept everything within an organic palette borrowed from the surrounding mountain woodland to create cohesion. “Golden tones from the aspens, amber tones from the scrub oaks and greens from the evergreens all filter in through the house,” notes Tenzin. And in the couple’s serene main bedroom “there’s a little bit of a lavender hue that relates to the lavender and sage that grow so beautifully here in Colorado.” Artwork introduces more personal and playful notes of color, like the specially commissioned comic book-inspired piece by artist Nelson De La Nuez, which serves as a touching reference to the couple’s love story. A self-confessed lighting fanatic, Tenzin was particularly passionate about how they would illuminate the home. Style wise, materials ranged from minimalist black metal to delicate amber glass globes. But “it was also really important for us to find LED fixtures that get warm as you dim them,” he explains. “It’s so critical for creating the right vibe.” These technical details are very much like “the difference between gray, cool lighting, which makes everybody look like a ghost, and that beautiful candlelit feel where everyone looks glamorous,” adds McGuire. Nestled in this soft glow and laden with lush textures, the dwelling now feels more approachable. And for the designers, there’s nothing better than infusing soulfulness into such shiny, modern spaces. As McGuire says, “When you can walk in and see the family truly relaxing in their own home, that’s a feeling of success for us.”

Designers Joe McGuire and Matthew Tenzin softened the entry hallway in this Aspen home by adding warm hemlock paneling. Other tactile features include a delicate Akari globe pendant by Noguchi as well as a Moroccan runner by Mehraban, a leather-and-maple console by Croft House and a bench from Stahl + Band, all based in Los Angeles. The custom artwork is by Nelson De La Nuez.

The dining room is awash in serene hues, with notes of blue in the Nourison rug and neutral tones in the bleached oak table, a credenza by Los Angeles-based Croft House, and leather dining chairs from HW Home. A Bocci 28 Armature chandelier and Articolo wall sconces with gray glass shades illuminate the space. The artwork is by Jo Hyman.

Artist Sue Oehme gives discarded and overlooked items a new life.

Trash to Treasure

S

ue Oehme has an aversion to throwing things away. “I want to use items again, recycle them, or whatever I can do to keep them out of a landfill,” she says. That mindset is behind her mixed-media pieces, which incorporate elements like produce bags and the little tabs that cinch bread bags closed. In her hands, they become vibrant cityscapes and nature scenes bursting with color and texture. The artist says a love for I Spy children’s books also inspires her art. “My son grew up reading them and we just loved trying to find different things,” she says, noting that it delights her when viewers spot familiar items in her pieces today. When she isn’t making her own art, Oehme enjoys another life as a master printer. She studied both painting and printmaking at the University of Michigan before moving to New York City in the 1980s, where she took printmaking classes at New York University. Later, she worked for Tyler Graphics, where she collaborated with legendary artists like Frank Stella and Helen Frankenthaler. “It was a phenomenal place to learn how the whole process works,” Oehme says. In the late 1990s, she arrived in Steamboat Springs to work for another company before launching her own printmaking facility, Oehme Graphics, which just celebrated its 10th year. Eventually Oehme started incorporating test plates—used to demonstrate specific techniques— and pieces of other artists’ printing plates (with permission) into her pieces. “They will come to a show and say, ‘Oh, I know that!’ ” she says. For All Our Lost Souls, exhibited at Space gallery in Denver earlier this year, Oehme used post-consumer packaging as printing plates, creating layers of vibrant colors on pieces of vellum and paper before assembling them into a collage that floats off the wall. These recycled plates later found a life of their own in another piece she created by stringing them together, titled Leave No Trace. “I was thinking about seaweed forests in the ocean—how they grow tall toward the sun and move effortlessly in the currents,” she says. “It also evokes lost fishing nets and all of the plastic waste in the oceans.” Oehme is concurrently planning her next art exhibit and a disco party for neighboring creatives. Noting that the local art scene is booming, she says she feels grateful to be part of it. “The community of artists here is strong,” she observes. “I’m one of the luckiest people because I get to do what I do here.”

Sue Oehme’s mixed-media piece Leave No Trace (previous page and opposite) uses recycled printing plates and is inspired by seaweed. Another in-progress artwork (left) is from a series entitled “Peek One the Other Side.” In her studio (below) watercolor test strips hang on one wall. Oehme looks through pieces of paper that will later be used in her art (bottom, left). The ink stripes on these pieces of paper (bottom, right) will also be used in her art after they dry.

Twisting Tradition Restrained details and a crisp palette put a fresh spin on classic French architecture in Denver. W R I T T E N BY L I Z A R N O L D | P H O T O G R A P H Y BY P E T E R V I TA L E

reating a brand-new home for a young family with children that includes substantial crown molding, limestone casings on windows and doors, and striking cross-vaulted ceilings may not be the most common scenario, but when such a vision was presented to architects Don Ruggles and Melissa Mabe, they embraced the opportunity as it falls right in line with their expertise. The result is a grand, stucco-clad home inspired by traditional French architecture but distilled for more contemporary living in Denver’s Polo Club neighborhood. “They were really well-versed in design,” Ruggles says of the homeowners, who were referred by general contractor Edward Diamond. “They’d done their homework and provided us with a number of images. All of them were focused on refreshed, traditional design.” In fact, one of the early inspirations came from another Ruggles Mabe Studio residence in the area. “They’re quite sophisticated clients,” adds Mabe. “When they walk in the room, there’s an elegance about them, which is fun, because they influence the design in a beautiful way.” Given that the lot boasts several mature, stately trees, one of the first tasks was siting the structure around these landmarks to best take advantage of the views. Ruggles also carefully considered the position of the sun to determine how light would fill the rooms. The couple wanted to be able to monitor their young children outdoors, and the husband sought expanses of yard where he could play games with the kids. As a result, bedrooms are situated upstairs and the family spaces below are designed to open onto stone-paved patios and manicured lawns created by landscape architects Adam Hallauer and Jeromy Montano. The front of the home features a high-ceilinged, formal entry with elements such as a copperroofed overhang and gas lanterns. “There’s a sense of verticality to the composition,” explains Ruggles. “That absolutely comes from the Empire style, but we erased some of the overly wrought details to give it a more distilled look.” “Everything needed to feel fresh,” adds Mabe, who worked on the interiors with designer Emily Lindemann. “While they wanted the interiors to be rooted in a classic

style, they didn’t want to overdo it.” Pulling back on some of the finishes helped accomplish that, such as using a simple English bead trim to create shadow lines and texture. However, more ornate features—such as coffered ceilings and cremone bolts on many exterior doors as well as the kitchen cabinets—remain. A clear, bright palette set against a white backdrop adds to that sought-after fresh feel: an all-white kitchen, crisp creams and blues with neutrals in the family room, and white and Kelly green in the living room. Trips taken by the couple and the design team during the years it took to build the house turned up antiques in Charleston and glamorous modern pieces in Palm Springs, and the finds were incorporated into the home’s interiors. “The big brushstrokes are all timeless, and the fun punches are often decorative elements, such as the art or pillows,” says Lindemann of how the team bridged those collected pieces with the traditional French elements of the abode. “The only place where we made a really contemporary statement with the furniture was the dining room.” There, a goatskin-parchment surface tops a table with an acrylic base, and hand-embroidered silk wallpaper wraps around the room. “We balanced that with two very traditional dining chairs and an antique buffet,” the designer adds. The deft layering of old and new continues in the main bedroom, where a gilded four-poster bed and chandelier are updated by the addition of clean-lined seating, mirrored accents and contemporary accessories. Over in the kitchen, antique green china is displayed in the upper, glass-fronted cabinets expressly to weave notes of the living room palette into the otherwise white space. This attention to detail is found throughout the residence. “The millwork on the doors and the window casings is just spectacular,” says general contractor Brian Husmann, who worked alongside Diamond. “You just don’t see that every day.” “A lot of decisions that went into this house were driven by the family,” says Mabe. “Our clients really thought about how to bring everything together.” Now, at the end of the day when the sunlight filters in through the main bedroom’s windows, just as planned, and the wife reads to the kids in the nearby sitting room, those careful decisions support the most important goal of all— creating a family home.

At a Denver residence designed by architects Don Ruggles and Melissa Mabe, sconces by Sheryl Stringer Gas Lanterns & Lighting flank the entry. They complement the copper gutters and entry roof. A formal procession leads to a foyer with a two-story window well and a spectacular curved stair with a railing made by McSwain Metal Fabrication.

Above: The bright white palette of the interiors continues onto the living room patio, which is paved in Turkish basalt. McKinnon and Harris outdoor furnishings provide elegant seating around a limestone fireplace with a built-in television. Opposite: Off the family room and against Benjamin Moore’s Atrium White walls, the breakfast area features a custom table by David Kremer paired with Kathy Kuo Home dining chairs and a banquette upholstered in a Kravet textile. In the flanking William Ohs cabinets are blue-and-white ginger jars and other dishes. The forged-iron lantern is by Gregorius Pineo.

Right: A series of Visual Comfort lanterns centered in the cross vaults of the main hall lead the eye toward the living area and its patio. The limestone columns were sourced from Materials Marketing. Opposite: For the sitting room in the main bedroom suite, the wife wanted a more modern feel. A velvet Kravet sectional with contemporary lines sets the tone, and playful, colorful animal artwork from Dallas-based Coco & Dash fills the walls. The Paul Ferrante chandelier is from John Brooks.

In the main bedroom, traditional style appears in the gold-leaf canopy bed by Alfonso Marina from Chuck Wells & Associates and an antique-inspired Vaughan leaf chandelier from John Brooks. A pair of Rose Tarlow Melrose House corner chairs upholstered in Kravet fabric and a Dennis & Leen hexagonal table, all from John Brooks, lend a contemporary edge. The Oushak rug underfoot is from Azari Rug Gallery.

The common areas of the home are oriented toward the landscape designed by Adam Hallauer and Jeromy Montano. The outdoor spaces were envisioned as casual places where the children can play, but more classic elements like the dark green boxwood and conical Norway spruce offset the bright white exterior.
