All’s Well

I’m writing this letter early on a Friday morning after completing a 10-minute meditation on my Calm app about building consistency. It’s just one component of my daily wellness practice, along with long evening walks, a plant-based diet and an ongoing edit of our home’s interior to make it more regenerative.

Coming out of the pandemic, we have a heightened awareness of the influence that our homes can have on our well-being and the broader environment. At Luxe, we’re taking a leadership role by engaging in this conversation with our readers as well as the greater design community. From conscious landscaping to wellness retreats and meditation rooms, you’ll find the theme woven throughout this issue. We also recently hosted our firstever Living Well summit in Los Angeles featuring a captivating lineup of speakers who inspired and educated our audience with topics ranging from the power of the downstate to universal rules about how to design with intention. I encourage you to learn more by tuning into our new wellness-focused channel, Wellness by Design, launching soon on designtvbysandow.com

INSPIRING MIND

KIMBERLY TIMMONS

Chances are you’ve seen the work of Kimberly Timmons Interiors before—at the Sheraton Resort in Steamboat Springs, the Laurel residences in Cherry Creek, or the Guard & Grace and Los Chingones restaurants in Denver. Or perhaps you’ve stumbled upon one of the firm’s many homes across Colorado. As the studio, which now counts a team of two dozen, celebrates its 25th anniversary, Luxe caught up with Timmons to chat Colorado design. ktinteriors.com

You currently have 50 projects in progress, about half of which are in Colorado. Are there common threads that unite such a broad portfolio?

Our expertise is diverse but the tiniest details are always thoughtfully designed— and completely custom, which takes our work to a di erent level.

Tell us about the local design evolution over the past 25 years. Looking back, there was definitely a long Tuscan phase. Now we’re seeing farmhouse style take on di erent aesthetics. Homes here are developing a more modernized blend of both those styles. As for hospitality, design has gotten a lot more light and fresh, with contemporary, clean lines.

Share your greatest hope for the future of the Colorado scene. I’m all about new development, but we don’t want to lose what makes this place special. My hope is that those approving new designs will work hard to ensure they’re adding to our landscape in a positive way, and that we won't lose our quaint historic homes.

ON VIEW HERVÉ TÉLÉMAQUE: A HOPSCOTCH OF THE MIND

As its name suggests, “A Hopscotch of the Mind” (on view at the Aspen Art Museum from November 4 through March 26) encourages viewers to jump from the various periods and media of Hervé Télémaque’s career, which began in the late 1950s and continues to this day. The name also captures the playful quality of the Haitian-born and Paris-based artist’s visual vocabulary, which encompasses cartoon-like imagery, abstract gestures and mixedmedia assemblages. These are all devices Télémaque has employed to tackle seismic political events and grapple with such subjects as racism, imperialism and colonialism. “Art is a desire to respond to the outside,” the artist once said. Here, viewers are invited to join in this dialogue—first, by connecting with eye-catching references to popular culture, then by delving into the histories and experiences captured in these works. aspenartmuseum.org

OPEN HOUSE

IN DENVER, CHERRY CREEK IS THE STAGE OF EXCITING DESIGN NEWS WITH THE OPENING OF TWO CAN’T-MISS DESTINATIONS.

HERMAN MILLER

Making its brick-and-mortar Colorado debut is Herman Miller, which recently opened its first Centennial State location in Denver’s Cherry Creek North shopping district. This new store, where customers can test-drive an array of ergonomic designs spanning the brand’s performance seating, workspace, gaming and lifestyle models, is the perfect opportunity to experience the benefits of sitting well firsthand. In addition, on-site specialists are here to explain each piece’s unique features, from breathable suspension materials to adjustable backrests. The customizable finishes and stylish details of recent introductions—including the Embody chair and the Wilkes modular sofa group—share the spotlight with such iconic classics as the Eames lounge chair. “Balance, comfort and wellness were focus points when we began introducing new Herman Miller shopping experiences,” says Debbie Propst, president of global retail for MillerKnoll. “This remains true for our Cherry Creek store as we continue to create spaces that support the everchanging needs of the hybrid worker and modern home.” hermanmiller.com

DEFINE STUDIO

Since its launch in 2014, Interior Define has been helping online shoppers customize thousands of upholstered furnishings to fit their unique spaces and tastes. This past year, the process became even easier—and more personal—as the digitally native, direct-to-consumer firm expanded its brick-and-mortar presence across the country to more than 30 retail locations. Joining the list is a new store in Cherry Creek North. At the Denver Define Studio, Colorado homeowners can touch and test components of their bespoke creations before purchasing, all in a showroom that’s been thoughtfully designed and decorated to have a residential feel. The 6,517-square-foot space displays more than 80 percent of Interior Define’s current product assortment (including tables, rugs and lighting) and offers an extensive sample library of fabric and rug swatches, leg options and more. Add complimentary design advice and slick rendering tools, and it’s easier than ever for customers to sit in the designer’s seat. interiordefine.com

MEET THE MAKER

JARED HANKINS

Known for his realistic oil paintings of intricate structures and gritty odes to Americana—including the beloved bison that have long adorned the RitzCarlton Bachelor Gulch’s Buffalos restaurant—Denver-based artist Jared Hankins has been pursuing a new subject matter: iconic mountains and ski lines. “I’ve always been a skier and I thought it would be fun to paint from this perspective and capture angles that aren’t typical,” the Colorado native says. Taking cues from the silver and sepia tones of early photos of the American West, Hankins works with a palette that emphasizes the contrast between rock and snow, using extensive knife work to push each peak’s unique chutes and cornices into “almost abstract shapes where you have highlights contrasting stark depths and textures,” he explains. “The intention is to make the scene feel real, but as the viewer steps closer, the painterly quality becomes clear.” hankinsfineart.com

AS WATER BECOMES INCREASINGLY PRECIOUS, LANDSC APE DESIGNERS OFFER GUIDANCE—AND HOPE—FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL DROUGHT-TOLERANT GARDENS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

With decades of experience gardening through droughts, landscape designers across the West Coast have themselves become a precious resource. Their collected insights and ideas offer a path forward that reduces water consumption and aides in the overall improvement of our environment. From big changes to concepts as simple as using native plants, the West’s take on waterwise gardening—the practice of selecting plants that require less irrigation—is a wellspring of inspiration.

Many in the industry agree that a first step is changing our mindset: Waterwise doesn’t mean unattractive landscapes. And outdated language like xeriscaping (a term coined by Denver’s Department of Water in the 1980’s) hasen’t helped win anyone over. Landscape designers today are moving the conversation beyond gravel and cacti and showing just how inviting waterwise gardens can be. “People are getting into it now,” says Charlie Ray of The Green Room Collaborative in Phoenix. “They’re seeing how a dynamic native garden adds to the atmosphere

of their home.” Montecito Landscape’s Lisa Cullen has similarly shifted the dialogue with clients. “Nobody wants to do something because they have to,” explains the California-based organic gardener. “Rather than selling waterwise, we focus on the benefits and how pretty it can be.”

“We’ve overwatered environments for decades because of inappropriate material choices,” continues Ray, who carefully considers which flora and fauna to use for each project and often starts by adding shade trees, which create a micro-climate under their canopy. “Layer shrubs, massed for drifts of color and texture, and then lots of wildflowers—you’ll see the birds and butterflies come right in,” he adds.

For Forestoration’s David Noftsinger there is such joy in seeing blanket flowers grow wild in nearby Glacier National Park, and equally happily in his own garden. “Planting natives helps develop a sense of place and an appreciation for the bounty of your area,” explains Noftsinger, who recommends homeowners familiarize themselves with natives unique to their state. Visiting

local botanical gardens for inspiration can also be helpful. “Become a member, go to workshops, volunteer—they’re a key resource for local communities,” says Ray.

All in all, the approach to gardening and landscaping happening on a local level along the West Coast can be replicated across the country. And as Noftsinger believes, “the more pieces we put back together, and incorporate what’s supposed to be there, the more change we’ll see— every bit you can do is beneficial.”

Above: Forestoration created a unique garden oasis at the foot of Montana’s Columbia Mountain. Top: In Southern California, Montecito Landscape used colorful, drought tolerant plantings. Grounding Approach

VERA ICONICA ARCHITECTURE’S VERONICA SCHREIBEIS SMITH BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.

I like to say we design experiences and architecture happens to be our medium. Whether you call it wellness architecture or something different, what we’re seeking to do—not just with every project, but with every space—is nurture the soul, optimize people’s lives and elevate the human experience. Architecture is the practice of creating your surroundings and it can influence everything from an inhabitant’s emotions and cognitive performance to relationships and the ways in which we gather and interact. Did you know we spend 90 percent of our time indoors? How we sculpt and model that

interior really impacts every single part of our lives.

Buildings are powerful. There have been neuroscientific studies done where EKGs are performed on people who are then taken into unique buildings like a temple, Grand Central Station or the Salk Institute. Their frontal lobe actually shuts down once inside. This is what happens in meditation, when you enter a non-dualistic or flow state, which is your highest level of being. So people who can tap into this and work from their flow state are often high-performing businesspeople, musicians or creatives— they feel super productive and happy. I try to create spaces that support how people want to operate and are tailored to their

inhabitants in every way because when homes have a proportional or harmonic resonance, you will ultimately feel better.

At the end of the day, humans are a part of nature and if we fight that or try to shut it out, we end up hurting ourselves. I make sure that natural materials and plenty of light are present in every project. Using local resources also creates a sense of culture, belonging and identity which is really important to our existence. But everything comes back to being in harmony with nature and taking care of our planet. veraiconica.com

FROM CALIFORNIA TO THE CATSKILLS, THESE NEW HIGH-DESIGN DESTINATIONS ARE AIMED AT IMMERSIVE WELL-BEING.

If the latest crop of wellness hotels, retreats and fitness clubs across the U.S. have anything in common, it’s that exactly none of them adhere to the ubiquitous spa aesthetic of recent decades—dependably soothing but often dull. The future of luxury destinations takes a more full-bodied approach and looks

to improve your physical, emotional and spiritual states through elevated experiences and sophisticated spaces. From luxe resorts and nature-focused bootcamp-style getaways to exclusive, über-stylish gyms, these wellness hot spots will have you longing to pack your bags and take a deep exhale upon arrival.

RESET Telluride, Colorado

The rugged San Juan Mountains were undeniably influential for architect and designer Stephanie Malsed when creating the interior scheme for Reset’s wellness center, the hub of an ultra-luxe, intensive nature-focused retreat in Colorado. The state-of-the-art facility for sweating, recovering and mindfulness practice harnesses the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—and draws in colors from the outdoors, namely pine green and warm pink tones from alpenglow. Guests engage in guided half-day treks and self-care rituals surrounded by nature or in the comfort of the wellness center. At the end of the day, retreat to a private section of the Madeline Hotel & Residences with amenities that include algae-infused slippers, a hydration bar and customized aromatherapy. resettelluride.com

THE RANCH Hudson Valley, New York

The Ranch, a results-oriented fitness retreat, which began in Malibu in 2010, is ready for its East Coast debut after taking over the legendary 200-acre Table Rock Estate in upstate New York. Designer Steven Gambrel oversaw the interior and historical restoration of the 1902 structure, devising a total transformation of its rooms, including the former ballroom reimagined as a gym for yoga, meditation and fitness sessions. Guests can kick off their morning with hikes through nearby Ringwood and Harriman State Park. Organic, plant-based meals, naps and daily massages are additional hallmarks of the idyllic but intense regiment. theranchmalibu.com

SENSEI PORCUPINE CREEK Rancho Mirage, California

A sense of calm and Japanese Zen penetrates the light-filled 22-room and -villa Sensei Porcupine Creek. A sister property to Lawrence Ellison and Dr. David Agus’ Sensei Lanai in Hawaii, the newest location promises guests a similarly bespoke journey toward living healthier, longer lives. Ellison oversaw all design details as a 230-acre private estate in the Santa Rosa Mountain foothills was converted into the ultimate wellness destination offering patrons three pathways to follow: Move, Nourish and Rest. The sunny and lush property—complete with gardens, a lagoon pool, golf fairways and hiking trails—is as much a part of the recipe for well-being as the Sensei Guide-led practices and treatments (think Abhyanga four-handed massage), plus five-star cuisine at Sensei by Nobu. sensei.com

HEIMAT Los Angeles, California

This fitness and wellness concept club, located in a refurbished 1930s industrial building in Los Angeles, is the future for the gym-going, Soho House-belonging, health-conscious set. The members-only outpost boasts stained glass panels dividing custom strength machines from a studio of specially designed Pilates reformers. The light-filled cardio area, complete with a cacti garden, resembles a chic hotel lobby while the locker rooms, conceived by Germany-based design studio Inco Media, are fitted with marble, hand-crafted wood paneling and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybeds. Upstairs, famed architect and designer Martin Brudnizki enriched the interiors of Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina’s Mother Tongue restaurant, which lives alongside a sparkling pool and exuberant co-working space awash in yellow. heimat.com

Wellness in the Woods

A LUXURIOUS MONTANA RESORT PROVIDES NATURE FOR NURTURE.

It turns out that you can get pretty close to nirvana by taking a mindfulness walk. I’ve recently leaned into the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who encouraged the practice of mindful walking. Yet, to truly deepen the connection, one needs to be in a place where the magical properties of wellness can take hold. For me, that was on a trip to The Green O.

Nestled into a quiet ponderosa pine forest hillside, the resort sits on 37,000 sweeping acres outside of Missoula, Montana, and envelopes visitors like a soft hug. One part luxury ranch and two parts nature immersion for body and soul, the all-inclusive, adults-only property is an exclusive assemblage of 12 design-forward, glass-boxed villas constructed with sustainable principles that dot the land like works of sculptural art. Of all the semi-secluded “haus” designs, my favorite was Tree Haus, which sits on stilts rising 23-feet above ground and features a spiral staircase running through its three-story spine. I enjoyed lavish comforts sheltered inside while simultaneously immersed in the panoramic landscape, glimpsed through towering floor-to-ceiling windows that provided views of wildlife and a hint of warm twinkling lights from Green Hauses beyond.

Among The Green O’s 12 rustic-yet-refined accommodations is Tree Haus, which sits on stilts offering an elevated view of the surrounding landscape.

This communal-like setting is crowned by Social Haus, the property’s heart center that functions as dining room, bar and central gathering spot. Architect and designer Kristen Becker of Seattle-based Mutuus Studio worked alongside interior designer and executive co-owner Nadine Lipson to conceive interiors that cast a smoky Modernism vibe with cozy campfire-style seating, leafy green hues and shou sugi ban wood reflective of the woodland surroundings. The Michelin-worthy culinary experience, led by executive chef Brandon Cunningham, impresses with nightly curated nine-course tasting menus, gourmet wood-fired pizzas available for delivery to your private hot tub, and artful delights by James Beard-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson. It could well be that her rosé-soaked rhubarb cake and dark chocolate brown tart with conifer green gelato ice cream were all the wellness I needed!

I spent my days learning how to flyfish on the Blackfoot River accompanied by a patient guide; riding ATVs through sprawling pastures; stopping off at the equestrian center for a bit of horse therapy and luxuriating in a mineral mud bath at the spa. But the most profound part of my stay was the stillness of early morning strolls in the woods, practicing mindful breathing and walking— and connecting to the wonders of the earth. thegreeno.com

SMART STYLE

When it came to her own kitchen in the greater New York City area, French-born, Manhattan-based interior designer Laurence Carr designed the space to serve as a central wellness area for her family of five. “My husband and I have three teenagers, and this is a place where we can work, socialize and cook together,” explains Carr, who collaborated with architect Jordan Rosenberg to conceive the contemporary home. “Biophilia, plenty of natural light and sustainability were also important considerations. There are large windows that provide a connection to the garden, and the

amount of light entering the space is important in minimizing the electricity and lighting that’s necessary.” Carr kept the palette clean and simple, employing a mix of dark gray and cream cabinetry, Calacatta marble and wood accents. “Cream is much softer than white, and the gray lends a contemporary touch,” says the designer. To create a look that’s seamless and streamlined, Carr paneled many of the appliances and even included a hidden door—made to look like one of the cabinets— that leads to a walk-in pantry. “The space feels timeless yet modern.” laurencecarr.com

CALMING FORCE

Claire Staszak of the Chicago firm Centered by Design is known for what she calls a holistic approach, combining her love of interiors with a passion for wellness (she is also a certified yoga instructor). So, it’s no surprise that when she was tasked with the renovation of a 1930s Colonial north of Chicago, she whipped up a kitchen for a young family that feels calm, balanced and serene. Staszak was limited to working within the kitchen’s existing footprint, however she was able to make a few key changes—including closing off an opening to the dining room, removing a window to add symmetry and adding a larger window to bring in more light—that make all the difference. “In doing this, we were able to fit in everything we wanted, including a large island and a coffee bar,” notes the designer. “The clients wanted something fresh and beautiful with a mix of Southern charm and the feel of a French bistro.” With that in mind, Staszak installed custom cabinetry from her firm’s in-house line in a light taupe shade, cafe-inspired lighting, natural wood accents and periwinkle backsplash tile from Ann Sacks. “Custom cabinetry provides the opportunity for a variety of details tailored to the homeowners’

needs, such as arched doors and open shelving,” Staszak explains. With the clients being avid cooks and entertainers, storage was a major focus. The designer incorporated hidden compartments for appliances, bakeware and utensils, while niches flanking the range hold cooking essentials such as oils and spices. Meanwhile, easy-to-clean quartz surfaces lend durability to the hardworking space. “Health and well-being are important to this couple, and I really tried to be a calm and grounding presence during the renovation process,” Staszak says. “My job is always to take the stress off my clients, make the process feel like a true collaboration, and channel a Zen attitude.” Most importantly, adds the designer, “a space doesn’t have to be boring in order to feel balanced.” centeredbydesign.com

NATURAL INSTINCT

When Los Angeles−based decorator Mandy Cheng set eyes on the magical treetop views from this Woodland Hills kitchen—which sits three stories above the ground thanks to the home’s hillside setting—it became clear that nature should take center stage in this renovation. “The view inspired the design and dictated the palette,” Cheng explains. “I wanted to bring the trees in and tie the design to the outdoors.” Cheng chose a combination of white oak upper cabinets and open shelving, which recalls oak trees outside, and green to channel the leaves. “When colors are consistent between indoors and out it gives the illusion of more space,” Cheng notes. Furthermore, the designer installed windowed cabinetry that not only references the residence’s Craftsman style, but “maintains that open, airy quality. We wanted to keep the cabinetry from feeling too heavy.” Low-maintenance quartz countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures that will develop a patina over time and a “natural-looking” textured tile backsplash round out the scheme. To address the client’s need for additional storage, Cheng installed custom drawers for cooking utensils, a nook for storing paper towels and wooden crates to hold potatoes and onions. “The previous layout discouraged cooking and eating well because it didn’t function properly,” Cheng says. “Now it feels clean, calm and inviting.” mandychengdesign.com

Keep the Peace

WELLNESS ROOMS HAVE EVOLVED FROM AMENITY TO NECESSITY.

As our world grows increasingly complex and connected, the need for places to get away from it all grows too. From Luxe’s bird’s eye view, seeking escape doesn’t necessarily mean looking outside the confines of home— quite the opposite, in fact. Take this Glendora, California, meditation room by designer Norm Wogan, which perfectly illustrates today’s artistic, deeply considered approach to at-home escapism. May these magical wellness spaces, from Brooklyn to Hawaii’s Big Island, inspire you to create your own slice of sanctuary.

Designer Norm Wogan scoured local Indian and Moroccan shops for unique artifacts—including an antique altar and aged copper pendants—to outfit his client’s Glendora, California, healing and meditation room. wogandesign.com

TAKE PAUSE

“My husband and I took meditation classes years ago. Afterwards, we set the intention to do a daily 20-minute meditation in the morning and another in the afternoon,” shares designer Lisa Kahn. For Kahn, maintaining a morning practice was easy. An afternoon practice amidst the activity of office life was another story—so she crafted a meditation room in her Naples, Florida, headquarters. To encourage

midday respite, the designer wrapped the space in a Kravet raffia, adding comfortable pillows in a HomArt batik fabric and live-edge wood stands to display healing objects. “We believe meditation is an important element of the day to gather a sense of self when the bustle feels all-consuming,” she says. “It helps us stay connected to our larger purpose for being here.” lisakahndesigns.com

RECHARGING STATION

When hired by clients with an appreciation for the Japanese bathing ritual of a shower to cleanse the body followed by a bath to cleanse the soul, designer Lindsay Anyon Brier saw a unique opportunity for an exterior wellness space. Specifically, when she viewed their Piedmont, California, home’s deck, set conveniently off a gym, she envisioned a soaking tub. In collaboration with Berkeley Heat, she conceived a cedar hot tub seemingly dropped within the tree line. Underscoring the home’s commitment to sustainability, the creation boasts a drainage feature in lieu of chemical maintenance. (Wastewater is then used to irrigate the property.) Adding a touch of sparkle to the scene, decorative screens with a Moroccan motif “create a sense of privacy and intimacy while focusing the eye on views of San Francisco Bay,” notes the designer. anyondesign.com

HEAVEN SENT

An enchanting yet derelict Hawaii Island property brought together the team of designer Marion Philpotts-Miller, architect Paige Wilburn and landscape designer David Tamura. Together, they restored the home’s old growth teak ceilings and beams, infused light and flow throughout the interiors and reimagined the grounds, whose pièce de résistance is an entry courtyard designed for peaceful repose. A lanai illuminated by vintage Japanese lanterns and outfitted with an antique bench flanked by bronze Burmese guardians offers the homeowners a particularly contemplative space to enjoy the sights and sounds of several water features. Not the least of which is a hidden shower garden tucked behind a retractable teak screen. philpotts.net

DREAMING IN COLOR

Leave it to designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to kick any notions that neutral and wellness must walk hand-in-hand to the curb. Exhibit A: This exuberant massage room set high on a cliff in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Bullard confidently swathed the space in Benjamin Moore’s Covington Blue, a languid, ocean-green tone that plays to the Sea of Cortez beyond the windows. A medley of natural woven sisal and abaca furnishings—all nods to indigenous Mexican arts and crafts—join a 1970s painting scored at an antique shop in Mexico City, which Bullard admits is his favorite element of the room. “The vibrancy holds you captive whilst still maintaining calmness due to its abstract nature and ear thy pigments,” he explains, adding, “it has a distinct and welcoming warmth reminiscent of Cabo’s famous sunsets.”

INNER SANCTUM

When designer Cheryl Settino Mosher’s clients tasked her with crafting a prayer room within their Brooklyn apartment, she did her research first. For visual inspiration, Mosher referenced Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament, looking to motifs of ancient civilizations.

Ultimately, she landed on a quartet of Schumacher wallpapers in sepia tones, which were deconstructed then put together in a bespoke pattern intended to evoke the feel of a sacred space modernized for contemporary

living. Meanwhile, for the layout, she used a Qibla compass to place the family’s beloved prayer rug directed toward the Kaaba. Bathed in diffuse sunlight, the room, with its cozy, velvet-covered divan, has become a reading room as well as a place for worship. “It’s an area to recharge,” says Mosher. “Now more than ever, we need these spaces. Whether you have a large home or an apartment, you have to make time to sit and find quiet—whatever that means for you.” brooklyn.studio

ICONS + INNOVATORS

Within any industry, profession or creative community, there are icons and there are innovators. Those in the first group—the icons—have a storied history and abiding level of expertise that has placed them at the very top of their field. While the second—the innovators—are discovering new ideas and ways of working that bring energy and ingenuity to their craft. And an important point not to be overlooked is that in many instances icons and innovators are one and the same. In this special section, Luxe Interiors + Design celebrates these enduring leaders and forward-thinking visionaries whose commitment to what they do and the people they do it for is both far-reaching and long-lasting.

AUTHENTIC DESIGN

“This year, we launched a sister brand to TRIO: Bode & Well,” Harris says. “As the product development arm of our business, it urges manufacturers to reduce dependence on toxic materials and harmful chemicals. We are actively focused on shifting the industry toward a healthier and more authentic legacy.”

HARRIS

most inspired organizations are founded in the mindset of innovation. Enter, TRIO. A national resource for authentic, unexpected and memorable interiors with a focus on genuineness, wellness, user experience and attainability, the design firm is led by CEO and principal Angela Harris. She weighs in on how TRIO aims to meet the needs of the industry beyond its interior design work. “We’ve seen a need for more responsible manufacturing, we want to provide not only the best possible design, but the best possible products.” Aiming to be a true partner to builders, developers and the end consumer, Harris established a sister company, Bode & Well. Through this duo of brands, she caters to every aspect of new community design. As a result, TRIO and Bode & Well have together become a go-to for multifamily, high-density work, master-planned community design, 55-plus resort-style living, model homes, sales centers, clubhouses and more.

EKMAN DESIGN

As experiences in a highly creative career go, few are likely to top working as an Imagineer for Disney. Perhaps it’s no wonder that now, as the principal of his firm Ekman Design Studio, Stephen P. Ekman is a leader who encourages visionary work. “We are known for transcending vernaculars and navigating various architectural styles,” he shares. “We pride ourselves on our creativity and thinking outside the box, while enjoying the challenges unique to each project.” Indeed, through attention to detail, the use of authentic materials and a passionate study of precedents, the EDS team has built a reputation for versatility, thoroughness and personalization. As for how his own goals inform these principles, Stephen says, “I’m proud of the beauty and sense of well-being we create. I want to leave behind timeless classic designs that transcend future generations with materials and details that are lasting.”

NEXT-GEN APPROACH

Asked to share the breakthroughs he feels are changing the industry, Stephen points to the planning process. “Threedimensional modeling and fly-through visualization using the BIMx Viewer helps clients experience their design through the evolving Metaverse. It gives them the ability to move from room to room and understand proportions and materials.”

DESIGN FIELD FAVORITES

Stephen shares a few of his go-to sources of inspiration in the industry.

• Muses: I have been influenced by renowned architects like Edwin Lutyens, Julia Morgan, McKim, Mead & White and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as early Colorado architects including Jacques Benedict, Burnham Hoyt and Frank Edbrooke.

• Media: Scrolling on Instagram helps us stay abreast of what peers and admired colleagues are doing. I love to keep tabs on #classicist_org, #michaelimberarchitect, #tomkligerman, #thomaspheasant and #curtisandwindham.

MARK DESIGN

Risk is often an ingredient in reward. For those who are considered icons in their field, this is especially true. Just ask Mark Haynes, Allied ASID. The designer and owner of Mark Design has found success from two big risks he took. “After working in advertising until the age of 45, I went back to school for interior design,” he says. “Then, after working at a design firm in Santa Fe, I relocated to Denver to start my own design firm. It was a daunting experience to move to another city without any clients.” But, three months in, he received his first big project, and his design studio has been growing since. One secret to this successful transition was his careful analysis of the industry “I initiated conversations with local showrooms, other designers and even individuals who had previously worked with an interior designer. What I determined was that there was a need for a smaller, boutique design firm that provided a more comprehensive, tailored, hands-on approach.”

DESIGNED FOR ESCAPE

“Given what has transpired over the past few years and the bombardment of too much information in our day-to-day lives, I think we all need a place to turn off the outside world so that we can stay productive and creative,” Haynes says. “It’s okay for people to say they need to take a little time away from their hectic lifestyles, jobs, the news or even their own families. Asked to discuss people who have influenced him, Haynes points to someone he has long admired: interior designer Thomas Pheasant.

“When I was just starting out in the industry, I saw one of his projects in a magazine. I fell in love with a vase in one of the photos and called his studio to find out where I could purchase it. The person I spoke with said they’d get back to me and I thought that would probably be the end of it. But a few minutes later, I received a call—Thomas had personally given them the information for me. Because of this experience, to this day, I will always make time to speak with design students, graduates or any craftsman just starting out in the industry.”

Cabin Fever

Nestled amid hills and peaks, a newly built Aspen residence takes a contemporary twist on mountain vernacular.

hile usually confined to gastronomy, the concept of terroir could be applied to this home. The French term references the conditions that infuse food and wine with the characteristics of a specific region. In a similar fashion, this abode is entirely intertwined with its Aspen hillside setting. “The clients were looking for a modern response to living in this particular place,” explains CCY Architects principal Rich Carr, who collaborated on the project’s architecture with associate Gage Reese. “The design was based on the idea of grounding the home to this specific site, for this specific family,” confirms the latter.

Their work was inspired by the natural materials characteristic to the region, and by the stone and wood of alpine environments. “It’s not your grandfather’s log cabin, but certain references speak to that,” Carr notes. Witness the home’s rafters, which are as structural as they are decorative, and the stacked planks that line its walls and exterior. Or take the timber canopy that caps both the front entryway and the ceilings of the living room and kitchen. “Our interpretations are very well crafted,” Reese says. “There’s not a lot of rustic accents other than the inherent richness and texture of the wood.” A richness complimented by roofs that each have different textures outside, and soaring fireplaces which also nod to rough-hewn shelters with a twist inside. “Each stone is cut to fit perfectly with the stone next to it,” Reese points out.

A steel-framed sliding window system enables the home to fully open and embrace the exteriors. Italian porcelain tiles—used for the home’s indoor flooring as well as its outdoor spaces—further the effect. “It erases the distinction between what is inside and what’s outside,” Carr comments. To enhance that feeling of living close to the land, the home is perched over a manmade mountain waterfall and babbling brook. They’re the work of Scott Sones, formerly of Ceres+ Landscape Architecture, who now heads his own firm, Sones Landscape Architecture. Sones designed the two water features to have the appearance of being connected beneath the dining room. “The intention

Wwas to have it feel like a stream that we built the house around,” Carr explains. “And it really does feel that way when you’re there.”

The wall of sound created by the water’s soothing murmur fosters a feeling of seclusion—and that impression is intensified by the uninterrupted views around the house. “We were able to crack how to nestle it into the typography of the hill to make it feel private,” Reese says. The result is a low and quiet ambiance on the front side while, in the back, the home’s two levels open to expansive sights of a large meadow with the Elk Mountains ringing the horizon line. “The spaces are organized around the experience of water and nature,” Reese concludes.

As for the interiors, KA Design Group principal Kenneth Alpert and design director Shaun Folensbee’s work augments the architects’ approach. Color, for instance, is minimal to keep the focus on the dramatic, changing landscape— a choice which also softens and complements the architecture’s material palette. “Everything is very clean, very simple. They didn’t want anything too jarring,” adds Alpert. “The idea was to invite the outside in and let it shine.”

To achieve this goal, the interior designers relied on strong, simple shapes, which they elevated with luxurious yet natural materials. They employed plush, inviting textures and sparkling metallics to make the most of the light streaming in through expansive windows. “Everything needed to be beautiful, soft and tactile,” Alpert says. Note the living room’s chevron carpet, woven from cowhide and fur, and the brushed-metal-and-resin top of the breakfast table. Or the crocodile leather on the bar stools, and the live-edge dining table, whose knots are accented with the burnished gold and horsehair upholstery of the chairs that surround it.

Yet that sumptuousness is not restricted to the public rooms, as demonstrated by the leatherwrapped headboard in the primary bedroom or by its bathroom’s all-in-one glass countertops infused with gold leaf. The close attention that went into designing the house’s relation to the land extends to its most minute details, such as the bar’s cabinet handles, which were carved from horn. The final effect is of an abode that radiates comfort, peace and relaxation. “It’s upscale but not showy,” Carr notes. “With a beauty truly unique to this place.”

THE POETRY OF PLASTER

Denver artist Monica Curiel shapes new meaning from a humble building material.

Beside small sculpted pieces, Monica Curiel uses a brush to blend water and plaster (right).

Images of gowns and fabrics (below) inspire the folds and knots that appear in her most recent artwork (opposite and previous page).

Plaster exudes pure possibility for Monica Curiel. Both versatile and tactile, it allows the Denver-based artist to mold her memories and Mexican-American heritage into poignant abstract works.

Minimalist linen whites, inky blacks and creamy taupes that Curiel tints with coffee grounds help draw the emotions her pieces capture into focus. First, the artist applies plaster onto wood panels. She then lets it dry just enough to form pliable layers that can be folded into dynamic shapes. “You have to understand how this material behaves and know how light and shadows will hit certain angles,” she notes.

Curiel grew familiar with this medium as a child, accompanying her father to construction sites where she learned to grout tile and plaster walls. Surviving a cancer diagnosis at age 19 gave her a yearning to study diverse fields, including interior design, fashion and fine art. But she found her true voice by returning to sculpting plaster. Her practice soon became “an ode to my parents,” she says. “It keeps me connected to their labor and sacrifice as Mexican immigrants pursuing the American dream.”

Waves and sinews from childhood memories permeate her art, from striped cobija blankets to damp bedsheets billowing in her grandmother’s backyard, or a rippling river where she and her sister used to play: All these shapes undulate through the delicate drapes and grooves Curiel coaxes into her plaster paintings.

The artist appreciates using “the things we consider ‘ordinary,’ ” she notes. This includes utilizing plaster powder and sheets from the hardware store to form her ethereal folds. She also employs tile-grouting tools to carve out shapes and sandpaper to smooth surfaces. This paraphernalia fills her luminous studio with a comforting chalky aroma that conjures memories of her father.

In another homage to him, Curiel’s latest foray into functional design was inspired by his love of music: Her recent light fixtures, chairs and decor items evoke the ornamentation of mariachi garments. Wherever her practice may lead, she remains grounded in a sense of herencia, or heritage: The love and lessons handed down from her parents, but also the inheritance she’s building through her work.

“I think about my pieces as objects I will leave behind on this Earth,” Curiel says. Plaster, after all, retains the touch of her fingers, preserving every movement, mark and memory.

MINIMALIST MINDSET

Despite the constraints of an existing footprint, a design team transforms a Beaver Creek townhome into a modern masterpiece. WRITTEN BY LAURA FENTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMBERLY GAVIN

L U X E S O U R C E C O M206
Architecture: Stephanie Lord-Johnson, Berglund Architects Interior Design: Yvonne Jacobs, Jacobs + Interiors Home Builder: Steve Boderck, Beck Building Company

Step inside this Beaver Creek residence’s unassuming entry door and the drama is quick to unfold: A bright space highlighted by a sculptural chandelier suspended within an open, visually inviting steel-andoak staircase offers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. This come-hither effect is very much by design, and the “reveal” becomes even more impressive as you ascend the stairs, notes interior designer Yvonne Jacobs. Upstairs in the main living space, a patinated metal fireplace surround soars to the 23-foot-tall ceiling. The color palette is muted yet the space is alive with texture. Everything on the interior is pristine while, outside, the views span out to the ski way and waves of trees backed by the Rockies.

The homeowners—avid hikers, skiers and snowshoers—were drawn to the home’s walking proximity to Beaver Creek village and easy connection to the area’s trails. But it took some imagination to believe that the abode, which was once decked in heavy drapery, elk chandeliers and a slew of rooster motifs, could ever be the sleek, minimalist retreat it is today. “It was immaculately done, but in a very dated ‘mountain’ style while our taste is more contemporary,” recalls the wife.

The couple called upon Jacobs because they loved her restrained take on mountain modern aesthetics. And while they anticipated a renovation, her team’s assessment of their space (which included replacing the closed-off spiral staircase with airy, industrialstyle steps) opened their eyes to more extensive possibilities that would better suit their lifestyle and taste. Jacobs also suggested opening the kitchen to the main living space, which required significant engineering. “We were willing to take this home down to the studs, which is pretty much what we did,” says the wife. But the stacked, four-story design presented significant architectural limitations. Plus, the local homeowners’ association prohibited the designer from enlarging the footprint and limited her in altering the size and location of any windows. As a result, the transformation needed to come entirely from within.

Jacobs brought in architect Stephanie LordJohnson and general contractor Steve Boderck, both of whom she had collaborated with on prior projects. In addition to their plan to revamp the

staircase, Lord-Johnson devised several tweaks to improve the flow, such as removing a superfluous hallway, eliminating a beam in the main living space and simplifying the lines of the ceiling. The architect also helped strategize an exterior change the homeowners successfully petitioned their HOA for: updating the windowed wall in the living area with fewer panes of glass and more functional doors opening onto the patio.

For the interiors, Jacobs’ main directive was to create a clean, clutter-free environment imbued with warm touches. To achieve the right balance, she paired a cool gray palette with a mix of oak and sunburnt barnwood that would read as an authentic alpine residence. “The owners are very design-savvy and love a modern look, yet wanted this to feel like a mountain home,” says Jacobs, “They asked for elements that only a Colorado home would have.”

Because the direction was more minimalist, the designer opted for materials and structural choices that were statements in themselves. For example, the new fireplace surround—a collaborative effort between Jacobs, LordJohnson, Gregg Mackell of 186 Lighting Design Group, and metal fabricator Raw Urth Designs— is crafted from a patchwork of metal panels interwoven with lighting elements. Situated atop a floating stone hearth, it reads as a large-scale sculpture and serves as the living area’s focal point.

The largest and most demanding task for Boderck involved connecting the kitchen to the main room, since Lord-Johnson and the team had designed a giant steel beam that would span the full length of the new opening. “Adjusting a space while maintaining an existing structure is always a challenge,” notes Boderck. But while this installation was a bit of a nail-biter, it enabled a “total transformation,” Lord-Johnson says. “We could have put it in a column,” she explains, “but that steel beam changed everything. It’s such a great connection.” As for Boderck, he is pleased that this structural element took center stage and that they chose to expose rather than hide the engineering. Now, the whole home enjoys a fresh perspective: The reconfigured layout makes it feel bigger and natural light pours into every corner. “Turns out we didn’t need any extra square footage,” Lord-Johnson concludes. “We just needed to amplify what already existed.”

Diamond in the Rough

Largely untouched for over a decade, an inviting Vail gem is modernized for new owners.

Architecture: Kyle Webb, KH Webb Architects Interior Design: Sandy Moore and Megan Newman, Accentrics Interiors Home Builder: Travis Cremonese, Shaeffer Hyde Construction

Over the past 15 years, Mike and Lori Kosloske have traveled the world, settling down in a few different places along the way—and interior designers Sandy Moore and Megan Newman have always been along for the ride. The two have outfitted several homes for the jet-setting couple, who purchased their latest residence in the Vail area to serve as a recreational snow retreat. “They have a large family and lots of friends,” Moore says, “and they wanted a house that would be a great spot to vacation and bring everyone together.”

The property is at the top of a mountain—ideal for Mike, an avid skier—and close to a quaint village, which appealed to Lori. Yet the 2007 residence was largely untouched. “The home had great bones but needed a face-lift,” Newman says, recalling the original bathrooms, yellow Venetianplaster walls, and carpeted bedrooms. But the layout was accommodating and offered vaulted ceilings, en suite bathrooms and an abundance of glass that let in views of the valley.

Lori envisioned a contemporary mountain feel with a fresh palette and elevated finishings. Inspired by the dark branches of the surrounding snow-capped aspen trees, she pursued a blackand-white color scheme with pops of gold against the brown hardwood floors and woodwork. “The big question was: Could we bring the house up to the vision Lori wanted?” Moore reminisces. “We thought we could.”

They turned to two professionals who knew the residence better than anyone: its original architect, Kyle Webb, and general contractor Travis Cremonese, whose firm was behind the construction. “Originally, it wasn’t a typical log house but a more transitional, cleaner design,” Webb explains. Which luckily meant that modernizing it wouldn’t require a heavy renovation, Cremonese adds. “It’s a gem of a home that was ahead of its time,” he notes. “This new project was about complementing the elements that were still here.”

The team found subtle ways to bring the abode up to date, like refurbishing all three fireplaces and replacing the carpeting with wood flooring. And in the main living area, the bar became a centerpiece by swapping lacquered shelving for

a sleek glass-and-metal unit mounted against an antiqued-mirror backsplash reflecting views of the mountains outside.

A fresh material palette sets the tone in the kitchen too, where black granite eliminates the utilitarian feel of former stainless-steel countertops. Then there’s the focal point: a custom oversize brass hood. “I said, ‘We need a showstopper here. Let’s go big,’ ” Lori reminisces. “It makes me so happy.” The biggest transformation occurred upstairs, where the team gutted and combined two bedrooms to devote the entire second level to a primary suite. “Mike and Lori now have a private area to retreat to when hosting large groups of guests,” notes Newman.

Throughout the residence, the designers painted walls a warm white and selected cozy, large-scale furnishings to match the volume of the home. “We focused on bringing in warmth with bouclés, heavier woven textiles and pure-wool rugs,” Newman says, pointing to the great room’s sheep-wool chairs and velvet pillows. Meanwhile, contemporary lighting, airy draperies and streamlined forms balance the rustic backdrop. “The house has stone columns, as well as wood ceiling treatments and cabinetry,” Newman remarks. “When you pair that with clean lines, it feels like a newer, modern home.”

While grounding spaces in creams, blacks and charcoals, the designers also introduced accent colors, particularly in the bedrooms. “We wanted this abode to be a place where, if you repeated your visit, you could stay in another wing and get a different experience,” Moore explains. Ochre and mustard appear in one room, while the children’s area features a deep red. The primary bedroom, meanwhile, fulfills Lori’s request for a soft, romantic feel with blush pillows, a white-leather bed and lace sheers.

No matter which part of the residence is occupied, they all foster relaxation and gathering. The media room, outfitted with a pool table and games, fully opens to the patio for indoor-outdoor entertaining. And the Kosloskes have already organized ski trips and celebrated holidays throughout the year in the house. Up next: family Olympics, a friendly sporting competition for medals. “There’s life and excitement in the home now. It’s used and cared for,” Lori enthuses. “It just needed some love.”

How does one define a healthy home? For Jeff Hindman, the answer is simple yet multifaceted. “A healthy home is sustainable, efficient and supports the environment and the wellness of those who live there. It is an oasis, providing fresh air, clean water, comfortable living spaces, inspiring beauty and a connection to nature.” With this passionate perspective in tow, Hindman founded Cottonwood Custom Builders in 1995. Since, the firm has become a leader in green building techniques, including net-zero all-electric homes, fire-resistant construction, indoor air quality and renewable energy such as solar and geothermal. The team excels at building homes that are truly tailored to the homeowners. For one client, the desire to live in symbiosis with the house resulted in highly specialized spaces—for work, growing food, meditation and more. For another, secret cat tunnels gave beloved furry family members enrichment and escape from their canine companions.

GUIDE TO A WELL HOME

The Cottonwood team specializes in building healthy homes, and it involves a holistic, ground-up approach by necessity. Hindman shares the foundational steps they take to make places that keep their inhabitants living well.

• Invest in air quality. When it comes to air sealing, waterproofing and insulation, the details are what makes or breaks the performance of the finished home.

• Embrace natural light but minimize solar heat gain. Taking the Colorado sun into consideration, we reduce the need for mechanical cooling while enabling the inhabitants to enjoy the benefits of natural light: reduction of eye strain, boost in productivity, healthy houseplants, increased vitamin D levels, balanced circadian rhythm and more.

• Use nontoxic building materials. During our building process, we avoid materials that release VOCs and other harmful pollutants, and we advise interior designers and decorators to do the same with furnishings and accessories.

• Integrate nature. From living walls to built-in herb beds, we love to work with our homeowners to bring the outside in.

Top This vertical garden has more than 1,000 plants. It is externally monitored and automatically watered/fed. Right Thoughtfullylocated natural light has tremendous health and green-energy benefits.
