Masterful Mix

In Denver, the reimagining of a distinctive 1880-built house proffers rich, decorative layers.

Bubbly, cell-like patterns ripple across a painter’s massive fluid art compositions.

After fire damages a Boulder home’s in-progress renovation, the design team rallies anew.

Recast for a family’s next chapter, this Denver abode pairs blue-chip art with classic furnishings.

WORK IT SHINESTY HEADQUARTERS

Shag-carpeted conversation pits and a Jet Ageinspired bar aren’t the typical trappings of a corporate HQ—which is precisely why Chris White, CEO of Denver-based apparel brand Shinesty, green-lighted them for the recent renovation of his company’s new home base, a 5,200-square-foot industrial space in Highland. “The Shinesty brand is all about forcing the world to take itself less seriously,” says Abigail Plantier, founder of local experiential creative agency Maximalist, who helmed the design. “Chris wanted the employees to feel like this was their house; a place where they can bring friends after hours.” Plantier employed retro-style furnishings, dramatic lighting, tropical prints and the boldest of colors when imagining a series of spaces one might encounter at a glamorous house party. “In the lobby, where everything is blue and reflective, you feel like you’re in a pool surrounded by cabanas,” she says. In the berry-hued boardroom, staff and guests can belly up to the bar and take in the city views. “This was a refreshing opportunity to create a special world for them,” Plantier says. maximalistxd.com

POST MASTER WHO: Megan Moore, founder and principal of Dado, a Denverbased firm offering everything from full-scale interior design services to expert advice on smaller projects. Of her serene spaces, Moore says, “We aren’t interested in the visual first; that really comes second to how a space will feel.” WHAT: Cool, calm and collected is the vibe of this feed, which showcases Dado’s well-edited aesthetic with mood boards, behind-the-scenes moments and completed residential project photos. Unafraid to reveal her favorite sources, Moore often introduces

followers to the emerging artists and makers whose creations she loves. WHY: “It takes real work to shape meaningful spaces,” reflects Moore, who uses Instagram to remind her followers of the effort and expertise that go into a well-conceived design. “I like to show the process as much as possible, so it doesn’t all seem like magic.” IN HER WORDS: “I hope our followers enjoy what we do and maybe get ideas for how they can make their own spaces feel good to themselves. And I hope they learn a little bit about interior design—and why it matters.”

CHECK IN IN ASPEN AND DENVER, TWO NEW HOTELS MARRY COMFORT WITH STYLE. Aspen’s Paepcke Park provides a picturesque setting for the town’s newest boutique hotel, Mollie Aspen. Designed by CCY Architects and Post Company, the quietly luxurious property’s 68 guest rooms and common spaces—including a restaurant, café and bar with menus curated by Gin & Luck—give a subtle nod to Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics. Understated white oak, terra-cotta and sand-cast brass finishes define the interiors, which also feature large windows to highlight the stunning Aspen views. Meanwhile, in Denver, Lyon Porter and Jersey Banks, cofounders of boutique hotel and lifestyle brand Urban Cowboy, recently worked their magic on the Mile High City’s landmarked George Schleier Mansion. The Gilded Age property has transformed into a 16-room boutique hotel, bar and restaurant. There, painstakingly preserved period details including an intricately carved wooden staircase and a 19th-century bar create a historic backdrop for such custom touches as hand-hammered copper soaking tubs and wallpaper that celebrates Denver’s place in the West. mollieaspen.com; urbancowboy.com

“I love Modern Nomad Home + Studio. This creative space in the Golden Triangle neighborhood is a collective of local craftspeople and different vendors who source around the globe. There, I look for those statement accessories (right) that add the final touch, like a vintage end table or the perfect rug for a bathroom. Whether it’s to pick up a gift or flowers for a photo shoot, The Perfect Petal is a lovely place in West Highland for florals. And the food and cocktails at Wildflower in LoHi are exceptional. The rich finishes and traditional elements create a cozy, luxurious surrounding, too.

“WILD WEST: WILDLIFE MASTERS PAST AND PRESENT” This winter, the spirit of the American West comes alive within the 119-year-old walls of the Steamboat Art Museum with “Wild West: Wildlife Masters Past and Present,” an exhibition guest-curated by notable art collector Tim Newton, a former CEO of New York’s Salmagundi Club among other achievements. Comprising more than 90 works in media ranging from oil and watercolor paints to charcoal and bronze, the collection highlights pieces by the genre’s legends and 35 living masters, from bears by Carl Rungius to bronze buffaloes by Sandy Scott. The show runs through April 13, but avid collectors will want to visit early to browse the full selection of works for sale. steamboatartmuseum.org

MEET THE MAKER KRISTEN ABBOTT

Whether she’s searching for vintage postcards to incorporate into her paintings or the perfect leaves for her recent wet cyanotype project, “The Language of Leaves,” Boulder-based mixed-media artist Kristen Abbott considers herself a treasure hunter. Here, she shares more about her process—and the meaning it yields. kristenabbott.com You describe yourself as an intuitive painter. In the studio, I’m fearless. My practice is a means by which I can channel my emotions and thoughts, allowing them to take tangible form in the world.

This is especially evident in your wet cyanotype prints, which get their beauty from the Colorado sun and foliage. My process calls for me to embrace the flow of the seasons. For this project, I also started intentionally selecting leaves based on their symbolic meanings. For example, I can pair English ivy—a plant that symbolizes love, loyalty and strong emotional ties—with willow, which can represent humans’ capability to withstand hardship and loss. What do you hope viewers will take from your art? I want it to encourage introspection. But I also hope it kindles people’s curiosity and inspires them to appreciate the everyday beauty that envelops us.

How do local landscapes spark your creativity? Nature has always been my primary inspiration, but since moving to Boulder in 2021, I’ve found myself even more captivated by the breathtaking beauty at the base of the Flatirons. Natural hues are guiding elements infusing my art with a sense of place and belonging.

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com

ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

SIDE-BY-SIDE

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT

FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com

ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com

Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org

DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

BATH + KITCHEN

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

onsistency, quality, teamwork and innovation are virtues that earn one a place on the Gold List. And so it is with Kyle H. Webb, AIA. As the President of K.H. Webb Architects, he’s made it his mission to build a team of skilled and talented professionals who, in turn, have helped his Vail-based firm amass an impressive portfolio of groundbreaking projects over the past 25 years. “When I launched K.H. Webb in 1999, it felt like we went from zero to 60 almost overnight,” Webb says. “Since then, we’ve been blessed to retain many of the outstanding architects who joined us early on, while continuing to grow our team slowly and organically.” Another constant in the firm’s evolution is their discerning, design-savvy clientele. “A stream of great clients provide us with unique and inspiring projects,” Webb shares. “My team and I welcome the challenge of bringing their visions to life because taking risks and exploring new

In the world of architecture, boundaries are meant to be pushed and the way we design and create environments is meant to evolve and adapt. When traditions and institutions resist change, they risk becoming irrelevant and can eventually fade away.”

How do you include the client in your creative process? From our very first meeting through completion, the client is an essential member of our team. We encourage them to explore their creativity, think in new ways and be inspired by the process, as we rely on them to share their sense of style, their personality and their vision for how their home should look, feel and function. What do you consider to be your greatest success? As we celebrate 25 years in business, I can point to our unique and diverse portfolio and our talented team of architects as a great success. But our greatest success overall? We are incredibly passionate about what we do and, for that, we consider ourselves very lucky.

“WE FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE A STRONG FOOTHOLD IN A COMMUNITY AS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL AS STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO.”

rue expertise is the result of steady, sustained growth, a passion for teamwork and a drive to be always innovating and improving. So it is with Chris Imbler and his award-winning team at Soda Mountain Construction + Design. Founded in 2006, SMCD began with a focus on high-end interior trim projects, but as the team’s skills grew, they transitioned to full, ground-up home builds. Last year, Imbler—formerly SMCD’s Vice President—purchased the firm with the mission to continue its upward trajectory. “Between 2012 and 2015, Soda Mountain built a series of speculative residences that exceeded market standards for quality and sale price,” Imbler says. “That allowed us to make a leap forward into the designbuild market with the addition of full-service architecture and interior design services.” When it comes to their clients, SMCD is committed to collaboration. “Our unique platform gives each client a big voice in the design-build process,” Architectural Designer Travis Mathey shares. “This

may begin with helping them find the ideal homesite, which is important when building in the mountains. From there, our architectural, interior design and construction teams begin a conversation that lasts throughout the entire project and delivers a beautifully crafted, highly personal home.”

Name influences that inform your work. We are fortunate to design and build in the beautiful Steamboat Springs area. Working in a ski town known for bountiful snowfall, we strive to build smart, energy-efficient homes with strategic roofing systems, proper insulation, adequate boiler and thermal heating packages and the best possible windows and doors. What do you consider to be your greatest success? As they say, you’re only as good as your last project. With that in mind, our greatest success is our ability to bring each client’s vision to life and create something truly inspiring. What’s next? As the challenges of a limited labor market continue, we’re working to enhance our construction management prowess. This allows us to keep building a high-quality product while eliminating the hurdles that might otherwise hamper a project.

here craftsmanship, innovation and teamwork meet, exceptional homes and environments are born. As the Founder and Owner of Alderview Construction, Tim Coughran has applied that principle to the premier homes he and his award-winning team have been building and renovating in and around Denver since 2016. “Having started out in the commercial construction industry, I learned that far too often the builder is brought into the design process too late,” the Gold List Honoree says. “That is why collaboration is such an important part of Alderview Construction’s DNA. Working with talented architecture and interior design

teams from the very start ensures a superior outcome for our clients.” When it comes to clients, Coughran and his team believe that communication and transparency are key. “Engaging with the client before their project’s design is finalized allows us to offer feedback regarding constructability and budget,” Coughran shares. “Given that costs so often influence clients’ decision-making, we make it our mission to assist them with advice and guidance at every stage of the design and build process. We also enhance the customer experience through the integration of technology, which makes their homes as functional as they are beautiful and personal.”

ASK THE EXPERT What style are you most known for? Because we undertake such a wide range of residential projects, the style of each home we build is determined by the client’s taste, lifestyle and design preferences. These concepts are then brought to life through the skills and expertise of the design teams we collaborate with. Describe the communities you work in most often. We specialize in constructing custom homes and performing full-house renovations in Denver’s most sought-after neighborhoods, including Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village and Columbine Valley.

Geneva Podolak SENIOR DESIGNER

hen difficult circumstances lead to life-changing growth, it’s hard not to appreciate the silver linings in life. That must be how Denise Taylor feels, after the need to stay home and school her children during the pandemic led to her achieving the dream of establishing a thriving design firm of her own, which she now operates alongside Senior Designer Geneva Podolak. “I left an eight-year position as a design director for another firm because I needed to be at home,” she shares. “I created Aspen Design House to complete a project here and there, but had no idea how resilient and exciting the luxury home industry

would be. My phone kept ringing. When I had three employees coming into work in my basement, we decided to invest in a studio.” At the heart of each of those projects is a belief that everything begins and ends with personalization. That, to Taylor, Podolak and team, is what “home” is all about. “Outside of our relationships with family and friends, home is the most important thing in our lives,” Taylor says. “Having a space that is designed for you, your interests and how you like to live is the ultimate comfort and happiness. We are intentionally a small, bespoke firm because we want to maintain the bandwidth to take the deep dive with each client.”

ASK THE EXPERT How do you ensure an enjoyable process for your clients? We have detailed meetings every step of the way. We coordinate with the architect and builder to oversee the whole construction process. On installation day, we tell the homeowners to head out skiing or plan to arrive a day later. We deliver a completed environment, with beds made, fresh flowers on display, music playing and candles lit. What project would you love to take on? We would love to design a ski home in Montana, another lakefront property or a contemporary apartment in the U.S. or Europe.

What’s next for your firm? We are currently designing a retreat in the wine country of Southern Italy. It comprises five homes on a single property and presents exciting challenges. The clients are also really fun—they completed their infinity pool before anything else so they would have somewhere to relax on site visits!

passion for beauty, function, craft and teamwork sets the stage for truly great design. As the Owner and Principal at Cook Design House, Jodi Cook leads a multi-award-winning team that’s been working in close collaboration with one another, their professional partners and their clients to deliver exceptional environments since 2016. “At Cook Design House, we believe that relationships are our greatest asset,” Cook says. “Over the past eight years, I’ve built a team of talented individuals who share my core values of kindness, respect, trustworthiness, dependability and warmth. These ideals extend to our clients and industry partners, and we treasure the relationships we’ve nurtured.” Another important aspect of Cook’s design approach is in the vintage and handcrafted pieces she loves. “My farm girl roots have given me a deep appreciation for goods that are antique, vintage and/or handmade,” the Gold List Honoree shares. “There is something

What style are you most known for? Our style is that which reflects the wants, needs and visions of the client and the current project we’re working on. Along with our ability to design across a wide range of styles, the common thread throughout our work is a feeling of warm livability. What’s new and next? We purchased and renovated a historic 1922 home in Denver’s Wellshire neighborhood in July, which now serves as our office, design studio and where we welcome clients and host industry events. We also enjoyed our first out-of-region publication in Luxe Interiors + Design Pacific Northwest for an amazing project we completed on Mercer Island in Washington State.

T

hanks to the likes of Instagram, Pinterest, HGTV and Houzz, it’s easy for anyone to gather ideas regarding the decor of their space. But Tim White, the latest owner of a historic house in Denver’s Curtis Park neighborhood, felt no such temptation. “When I hire professionals who are creative folks, I never want to head them in a certain direction,” says the homeowner, who is a seasoned developer himself. “If I express my leanings before I hear their thoughts, it may inhibit our choices; I prefer to reach a solution organically.” Besides, this house needed no spokesperson. Built in 1880, the Second Empire-style abode features a dramatic redbrick façade, an ornate front porch, classical wood cornices and a multicolored slate mansard roof. Having already been restored by Colorado Preservation, Inc. with great care, the mansion now begged for interiors with an equal richness of decorative detail—the perfect brief for a design studio known for bold interiors and color combinations. “This home had a presence, like it was the proverbial house on a hill,” says designer Troy Rivington, who, in close collaboration with firm principal Andrea Schumacher, embarked on a top-to-bottom reimagining of the residence. “When you walk in, you can feel the history,” Rivington marvels, pointing out the original moldings, staircase and striking stained-glass windows. “So many of the details survived over 140 years of existence; it’s amazing.” But charmed as they were by the home’s carefully preserved details, Tim and his wife, Stephanie, had no interest in living in a period piece. “Historic homes are often restored back to what they used to be,” Tim says. “We wanted the interiors to be sympathetic to the past but still designed for the here and now.” The newly expanded kitchen, for example, offers the contemporary conveniences of a sunny dining nook, large island and a wet bar. To its existing palette of natural wood, black cabinets and patterned floor tile, the designers added a dome-shaped concrete chandelier, emerald-green backsplash tile and striking Chinese brass cabinet

pulls. “We wanted to bring in modern touches so the interiors wouldn’t lean too historic, but at the same time twist it a bit,” Rivington explains of the eclectic assortment. “Because this home has a very distinctive look, bringing in elements that wouldn’t normally mix together really worked.” Further proof is on display in the study, where a gilded French antique chair, clean-lined velvet sofa and amorphous metal coffee table hold court between a giraffe-print rug and agate-patterned paper on the ceiling. And in the upstairs gallery, large contemporary paintings mingle with a glamorous curved settee, giant chandeliers and a carved-eagle console table painted a stark white in an unexpected departure from the typical gilt-wood finish. But even such eye-catching compositions fail to prepare guests for the visual feast awaiting them in the dining room—“one of my favorite spaces because it provides some context for the home’s history, yet is totally different from what most people would expect,” Tim says. Here, the millwork and high ceiling are glazed in a vibrant raspberry-colored paint inspired by the hues of the living room’s exotic drapery fabric—one of several details throughout the house that nod to the Japanese American population that called Curtis Park home after World War II. Books with sky-blue spines line one wall, a mural depicting cranes and cherry trees covers others, and a massive 1970s-era Murano-glass chandelier, also pink, shimmers over a vintage table flanked by patterned settees and armchairs in a soft blush. “When you’re in this room, you can feel people light up,” Tim muses. “It’s as if they’re gathering some of the energy that was put into that space.” For their private quarters, the owners desired a far quieter palette of creams and black. To compensate for the lack of color, Rivington and Schumacher lavished rich textures on every surface: a woven grass-cloth covering on the walls and ceiling, Belgian linen draperies trimmed with bands of bouclé, an upholstered bed adorned with brass nailheads, and, “for that touch of the unexpected,” Rivington says, a zebra rug. Amid the bursts of color, pattern and texture throughout such a spirited home, this calmer space underscores the design scheme’s allencompassing quality: an elegance that marries modernity with timelessness.

A Kravet rug and ceiling covering mixed with a Schumacher grass cloth on the walls create a rich backdrop for the study. The desk is Theodore Alexander and an Arteriors coffee table faces the Vanguard Furniture loveseat bedecked in a Christian Lacroix fabric. Benjamin Moore’s Martha’s Vineyard coats the shelves. The sconces are by Wo & Wé.

Brunschwig & Fils’ Lodi Garden drapery fabric inspired the living room’s palette. The sofa’s Jim Thompson Fabrics upholstery lends a rich note while a sideboard by John-Richard adds warmth. Vanguard Furniture’s Rowland chairs complete the scene.

t was while vacationing in Venice, Italy, in 2013 that Shaylen Amanda Broughton first dipped her brush into the canal to use for a watercolor painting. What began as a lark prompted a shift in materials and concept. “Water is considered the source of life, and that sparked something,” the artist explains. “I started bringing back naturally found water to incorporate its energy in my works.” These liquid souvenirs are the latest expression of a personal practice that began in childhood, when she learned the fundamentals of watercolor and oil painting from her grandmother, Grace. A degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design translated into an initial career as an interior designer. But for Broughton, creative satisfaction proved elusive in this field. Inspired by artist friends, she returned to painting; her landscapes soon garnered a dedicated following on social media, leading to mural commissions. However, with success came anxiety. “That’s when I started letting loose and doing abstract watercolors more as mediation,” she shares. “It feels like my truest expression.” From there, she moved to acrylics, a medium that allows her to mix in collected H2O and work at a larger scale—but also gives her the freedom to change her mind. “If I don’t like a composition I can just pour it again,” she notes. Broughton now creates massive abstract canvases that evoke the ripples and currents of the world. “It’s about a feeling,” she says of her pieces. “I’m never very literal with my work.” In a contemplative process, she uses a large brush to sketch shapes. She then pours thinned acrylic from a cup, letting the colors rise and swirl. “I’ll grab a piece of cardboard and move the paint around, or use big palette knives as if I’m icing a cake,” she explains. While the surface is wet, the artist uses a needle-tip applicator to drop a lighterweight medium into acrylic paint, thinning its viscosity and increasing its flow. When poured, it creates clusters on impact akin to the repeating rounds of honeycomb or a turtle shell. “It happened by accident at first,” Broughton describes of the bubbly, cell-like patterns. “It took research to recreate it.” As she looks ahead to a new body of work, the artist feels that her “liquid language” is best summed up in the famous words of Georgia O’Keeffe: “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say in any other way—things that I had no words for.”

Within her 1930s warehouse studio in Denver’s RiNo Art District, Shaylen Amanda Broughton (opposite) pours acrylics of varying viscosities to create the washes of color and cell-like shapes (left and bottom right) that have come to define her work. The artist is often drawn to watery hues and incorporates liquid collected from streams, rivers and oceans into her creations.

After fire damages a historic Edwardian-style Boulder home, an art-loving owner and her design team dream even bigger. WRITTEN BY CHERYL MEYERS P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y DAV I D PAT T E R S O N S T Y L I N G B Y N ATA L I E WA R A DY

I

t was an ominous string of calls on a blustery winter night that changed everything for one Boulder homeowner. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Lisa Watson’s landmarked home—just weeks away from the completion of a major renovation— was on fire. The cause was never determined, but the Chinook winds howling down nearby Mount Sanitas that night caused it to spread quickly. Firefighters saved the house, but structural and smoke damage meant that she and her design team—helmed by interior designers Kristin Losey and Felicia Bushman in collaboration with architect Neal Evers and project manager Karen Ramsey—would have to redo much of the project. Overwhelmed by the idea of starting over, Lisa looked for a new house, but nothing had quite the same character as the circa-1900 yellow clapboard Edwardian home she’d come to love. Thankfully, there also came unexpected good news: While assessing the damage, Ramsey discovered that the fire had burned away drywall to uncover original red brick walls. The revelation became a silver lining reigniting the homeowner’s excitement for the project. Fast-forward to today and Lisa will readily point out char marks on the interior’s now-exposed aged bricks. “They add character,” she muses. “It helps tell the story of this house.” Originally from Virginia and landing in Boulder after a stint in what she refers to as a “super contemporary” Los Angeles abode, she was ready to embrace a layered and collected aesthetic. “I grew up in a house full of art and antiques,” Lisa says. “For me, color is everything.” Losey and Bushman had taken big swings right from the start, before flames forced the project to a halt. “Lisa loves color with a curated mix of old and new,” observes Bushman of her client’s taste for going bold. With that in mind, the look of the topfloor primary bedroom initially kick-started the design scheme. “That hand-painted wallpaper was one of the first things Lisa fell in love with,” recalls Losey of the exquisite, vibrant green wallcovering they had found for the owner’s personal sanctuary

(and which, by a stroke of luck, was still en route from France when the fire occurred). “She had to have it, so we went from there.” Antiques and vintage-inspired furnishings, plus pattern-forward fabrics and blue paint on the ceiling, were added after the fire to complete this layered space. Lisa had also expressed enthusiasm for an intricate parquet floor and hand-painted blue-andwhite tile, which are now both used in the elegant kitchen. Coupled with a custom copper hood and gold-accent light fixtures, they make the space feel both design-forward and rooted in history. “Our client gave us the freedom to think outside the box and loved seeing new and unexpected ideas,” shares Bushman. “We wanted to be respectful of both the home’s architecture and historic charm and of its owner’s lifestyle and aesthetic.” Evers also hewed to this view, switching up the setup of a powder room and collaborating with the designers on the kitchen’s revised layout and a wet bar. Built-in shelving and structurally enhancing details such as the ceiling beams of the kitchen and family room further adapted these interiors to the homeowner’s needs. While the goal was to create a visually stunning and comfortable home for Lisa, her young son and their dog, what really takes these spaces to the next level, per the designers, is her art collection. The walls display pieces by giants of the contemporary art world: Rita Ackermann, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder, to name just a few. There’s a playfulness to the collection, too. Take the framed Hunt Slonem bunnies adorning the staircase. There’s also a skateboarding Bart Simpson mural on the basement wall by Denver graffiti artist Jolt and an Annie Leibovitz portrait of the Blues Brothers in the powder room. “When you walk inside this house, the effect is jaw-dropping,” Losey says. “There are unexpected surprises and eye candy at every turn.” On the exposed brick wall of the dining room, a pair of glittery-red Damien Hirst butterfly artworks now serve as a metaphor for the house’s metamorphosis. They’re a reminder that, with enough time and intention, almost anything can reemerge anew.

A Formations chest, Rose Tarlow Melrose House lamp and Mansour rug comprise the entry. Ornately framed Hunt Slonem art hangs in the stairwell while a work by Alexander Calder brings in a dash of color.

MASTERFUL MIX

Interior Design: Robert Passal, Robert Passal Interior Design

B

uy classic and it will last a lifetime,” designer Robert Passal recalls telling his client over a decade ago. At the time, the young man was renovating his first apartment in Manhattan and felt drawn to the industrial look so in vogue then. The designer helped him see the light—just not one that resembled an exposed pipe with bare bulbs. Instead, Passal guided him toward iconic and evergreen pieces that would outlast his bachelor pad days. So when that client, now married with two young children, made the move back to his home state of Colorado, a trove of timeless treasures went West as well. A new build in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood provided the perfect base for this family’s next chapter. The cream brick abode— a collaboration between Godden Sudik Architects and Farm Ethics Real Estate, LLC—has the approachable air of a modern farmhouse on a corner lot across from one of the city’s many parks. Landscape designer Matthew Underly of Designs By Sundown further articulated the property’s verdant setting with yews, privet hedges and hydrangeas, adding outdoor amenities such as a heated patio, fire pit and raised garden beds. Inside, the home offered well-proportioned rooms and blank-canvas interiors. As the couple desired finishes with a bit more patina, Passal brought in “lots of millwork and moldings to help it feel more grounded.” He employed other character-building tricks, too: Ebony and mahogany stains infuse the white oak floors with warm whiskey-barrel depth, and carved surrounds bring a sheen of history to the fireplaces. Adding risers helped the floating staircase take on a traditional appearance, while new cabinetry and a fresh backsplash gave the kitchen a more classic look. Then came the layers of antiques, artisan-made items and artwork, starting with the placement of standout pieces Passal selected from his clients’ former home. Making the cut: a staggering chalkwhite plaster chandelier, a set of French Louis XVI dining chairs and an array of high-impact art ranging from Robert Polidori’s sumptuous jeweltoned photographs of Versailles’ interior enfilades to a John Hoppner portrait of a lady in a russet gown—an engagement gift from the client to his

then-fiancée. “She loves old-master paintings,” says Passal. “When she moved into his former apartment, he bought that for her to make her feel at home.” Because the wife’s family is British, an English sensibility suffuses the interiors. “She leans into the shabby chic aesthetic a little, which is a nice complement to his classicism,” observes Passal of the couple’s style. Several nods to her heritage pepper the home: A triumvirate of cozy textiles including 18th-century block-printed chintz, cottage-ready ticking stripes and Savile Rowinspired woolens make appearances throughout. In the primary suite, a cast-iron tub sports a British racing green exterior—for a very proper soak, of course. Meanwhile, a striped tent ceiling brings a touch of mod exuberance to the daughter’s nursery and provides pure sensory delight. Not one to give short shrift to this side of the pond, Passal drew inspiration from the local scenery, too. In the study, fir trees sway across a hand-painted mural, bringing a distinctly Rocky Mountain twist to the space. “It’s my ode to Colorado,” Passal says. The designer also made sure to incorporate some of his favorite touches. Like legendary decorator Billy Baldwin—Passal’s inspiration— he adores a dark-walled cocoon of a room. Glossy navy millwork wraps the handsome study, which sits at the front of the house. “It gets moonlight, and I’ve always believed that dark rooms are made for evenings,” he muses. In stark contrast is the soaring great room with its soft cream palette and abundant windows, which seems built for sunny afternoons. A true family-friendly space, the couple “wanted it to be approachable and comfortable, but also chic,” recalls Passal. He opted for a Persian rug to camouflage spills and a bronze coffee table that will only look better with age. A chandelier made of glass shards and wire by British artist Deborah Thomas and a James Nares painting (another remnant from the owner’s bachelor days) bring an air of sophisticated cool to the room. It all goes to prove that the most interesting, nuanced spaces are evolutions, where a painting here or a chair there can represent all the eras of an individual’s life. For Passal, helping his client select pieces that would go the distance not only sparked a collection, but a friendship, too. “In the end, it’s not just about the design,” he reflects. “It’s about making a connection and building a relationship.”

Against millwork coated in Benjamin Moore’s Hudson Bay, Raymond Hendler’s 1964 painting Friendship Island brings a playful midcentury note to the library. By the fireplace are two antique stools, one neo-Egyptian and the other African in origin.

In a place as storied and magnetic as the mountains, inspiration is in no short supply. Take one look at the stunning homes created by Collective Design, and the influence of this awe-striking landscape is clear. “We seek to match the grandeur of these monoliths while striving to continue exploring our craft,” says Principal Architect Zane Levin. “Our style has embodied a mountain modern aesthetic, although we are incorporating other contemporary styles that harmonize with the surroundings and the various elements of human history in this place.” With these stylistic leanings in tow, the Collective team designs gorgeous homes—inside and out. “On the interior, our clients are no longer seeking the visual comfort and traditional wood features that used to dominate the mountain feel,” says Adrienne Rynes, President of Interior Design. “They want modern spaces that won’t feel dated in a decade.”

“The indigenous history within these mountains, the mining in the hills and streambeds and the explosion of ski culture have combined in our designs with amazing results,” Levin shares. “We are fortunate to work with vendors who are deeply in touch with the history of the places they represent. Indigenous artists honor the environment with recycled craftsmanship and local vendors source stone and reclaimed wood from the area around us.”

It is an escape and a place to grow new memories. In the world of design, there are some locales that add a special level of inspiration to the craft. The mountains are certainly one of those. To confirm this, all one has to do is look to the firms who are enveloped in those regions, like Jacobs + Interiors. “We have projects throughout the nation, but we are located in the Vail Valley, surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains, and that has its influence,” says Principal Designer Yvonne Jacobs. “In this area, we work with second and third homeowners who are design savvy and allow us to push the envelope. It invites unique elements, from bunkrooms that can sleep six to luxury mudrooms and saunas to end a long day on the slopes.” Of course, core to their approach is a bespoke factor, too. “We always try to dig deeper and figure out what the client’s family life looks like, their design aesthetic and what brings them joy.”

WE LIKE TO SAY THAT ONCE YOU ARE OUR CLIENT, YOU ARE A LIFETIME CLIENT, AND IT USUALLY DOES HAPPEN THAT WAY.” Top This Estes Park new build took advantage of all the views, creating a perfect escape for the homeowners. Clean As Mountain Air

Anyone who has ever taken a deep breath in the mountains knows that the crisp, clean air is invigorating. Karska aims to preserve this while benefiting her clients, via a different type of clean. “A current technology trend taking over Colorado is the use of clean energy,” she says. “Replacing gas stoves and fireplaces with electric/ induction appliances is slowly having a presence. Additionally, heat pumps are improving and being used more.”

kasiakarskadesign

The mountains have a certain majesty that tends to make lifelong impressions on people. Just ask Kasia Karska, who grew up in Poland near the Tatra Mountains and has been chasing the feeling of being mesmerized by them ever since. Today, she lives in Eagle, Colorado, and the Sawatch Mountains serve to inspire much of her work as a celebrated interior designer. However, she says that modern influences are also having their moment. “I never want to completely get away from the mountain look, but I think we are leaning toward ‘mountain modern’ now,” Karska says. “I like to approach this through thoughtful edits, like replacing the classic antler chandelier with a crystal one in the same shape.” Given her design-build capabilities, Karska also attends to the structure of a home, for which she says sustainable materials, like reclaimed wood and low-maintenance, long-lasting Corten steel, are “go-tos.”

Sometimes, a single place or aesthetic genre is the driving force behind countless bouts of creativity. For Seth Hmielowski, Scott McHale, Randy Henrie and their team at Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, that one inspirational source is both place and genre: the mountains. “Since 1952, our firm has been home to those who share a passion for the lifestyle of the Rocky Mountains,” Hmielowski says. Thankfully, that muse is well-protected—in part by Z Group’s work. “What sets Aspen’s creative community apart is the shared commitment to preserving our breathtaking valley,” Hmielowski explains. “Our local municipalities understand the importance of sustainable design and have established parameters that encourage innovation, resulting in solutions that benefit clients and the environment.” As for the former, they too receive the team’s utmost dedication. “For us, style is rooted in an understanding of the client.”

While the environment plays a core role in Z Group’s approach, so too does each homeowner. “We believe in crafting transformative spaces that tell a story, reflect our client’s vision and leave a lasting legacy,” Hmielowski says. “An invaluable exchange of ideas, insights and creativity with each client fuels our process. They are an integral part of the journey. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final product, our work is a collaborative endeavor.”
