Imagined Landscapes

Like Mother, Like Daughter

One Dallas residence with a spiral staircase and graceful details had its new owners at first glance.

Craftsmanship is at the heart of this Houston home built with an elevated and curated feel.

Austin painter Aileen Fitzgerald pulls ethereal landscapes out of the mystic and onto her canvas.

Furnishings get personal in this colorful Austin abode appointed for the designer’s parents.

“ Design is subjective, but we strive for architectural integrity. Classical elements feel timeless and never go out of style.” – TONY VISCONTI, PRESIDENT OF BELLA CUSTOM HOMES

he act of designing and building a wholly custom home is both art and science. Translating a homeowner’s aesthetic leanings into function-meets-form design intersects with a need to address every detail of structure and technicality. This crossroad is precisely where the passionate, expert team of Bella Custom Homes excels. Led by Tony Visconti and Stacy Brotemarkle, each of whom come from a long line of builders—they quip that it’s “in their blood”—the firm comprises talented craftspeople, artisans, architects and designers. The common denominator is their belief in honesty, integrity and transparency. “We provide a hands-on approach and seek to exceed the expectations of our clients,” Visconti says. “We are a small, luxury custom home builder, and everything centers on the homeowner.”

Bespoke + Beautiful “Every project is unique, and every family’s wants and wishes are different,” Brotemarkle shares. “We are here throughout the entire process to guide and educate our clients. Every project has its own unique challenges, and that can bring inspiration, too. For instance, we are known for building on topography lots. These sloped lots offer a chance to envision destinations in your own backyard. We love to create outdoor spaces where our clients and their friends and family feel like they are on vacation at a resort.”

FIRST LOOK HUNT & BLOOM

Will Hunt Lewis’ distinguished career in design spans decades. He ran his own business—a home furnishings, gift and full-service floral and event studio— before stints at Jonathan Adler, One Kings Lane and Kravet. Having relocated to Houston, he has now embarked on his next endeavor: Hunt & Bloom. Read on for details about this storefront and online shop. huntandbloom.com

What inspired the name? Hunt is part of my name, obviously, but I’m also relentless in my hunt for the best furnishings and decor. Bloom comes from my background in floral design and horticulture. Putting the two names together had such a nice ring. Describe the shop. The store is a tiny vault filled floor-to-ceiling with treasures. We’ve left no inch uncovered, so exploring is truly a magical hunt! We maximize every square foot, displaying a large collection of products—from wallpaper to entertaining necessities— in a small amount of space. We also offer custom upholstery, rugs and bedding. What distinguishes you? We blend old and new. Our assortment of vintage and antique pieces is compelling because we search the globe tirelessly for the best of the best. At the same time, we have carefully curated a variety of new styles. We want our selection to tell a very clear story about how we like to live and design.

CHECK IN

Two championship courses designed by acclaimed golf course architects Gil Hanse and Beau Welling anchor the new Omni PGA Frisco Resort. Not a golfer? The resort has you covered with 13 restaurant and bar concepts, a world-class spa, four pools, retail, entertainment, and nearly 130,000 square feet of event space. Luxurious accommodations include 500 guest rooms and suites along with 10 exclusive four-bedroom ranch houses. Interiors by awardwinning design studio Jeffrey Beers International tell a sophisticated story inspired by the resort’s Texas heritage while tipping a hat to golf throughout. Guest rooms feel like a cozy retreat with traditional tartan prints and emerald-green tufted headboards. “We get to showcase the best of Texas while casting a spotlight on Frisco as a unique destination experience,” says Jeff Smith, vice president and managing director of the resort. omnihotels.com/hotels/pga-frisco

Letecia Ellis Haywood For the ultimate staycation, this LUXE Next In Design 99 honoree can be found at The Post Oak Houston. “The hotel operates like a private campus, with five restaurants within walking distance. The guest rooms are cozy and wellappointed with comfortable beds layered in luxurious linens and marble-clad bathrooms for a spa-like experience. And don’t forget the people watching—you never know who you might see!” leteciaellishaywood.com Aileen Warren and Kiley Jackson From their River Oaks studio, these LUXE Next In Design 99 pros and founders of Jackson Warren Interiors are surrounded by their favorite local vendors, including Dimmitt Contemporary Art. “This gallery (above) represents diverse talent of emerging and established artists. We’ve been working with the owner as an art advisor for almost 10 years, and we know that no matter the project, we can always find art here that will enhance our design.” jacksonwarreninteriors.com Sherrell Neal This LUXE Next In Design 99 talent draws inspiration from the classic Vietnamese fare and vibrant decor of Le Colonial. “I love everything from the food to the interiors. It’s like stepping into a 1920s Saigon time capsule with stained woodwork and antique brass details. The elegant atmosphere is nostalgic. And there’s a genuine spirit of Southern hospitality. Lucky for the Lone Star State, San Francisco-based boutique Anyon Atelier selected Dallas as the setting for its second location. “The city’s love for design and creativity makes it the perfect locale for us,” founder Lindsay Anyon Brier muses. “We can’t wait to share our designers and artisans with the Dallas community.” Fall head over heels in love with the range of curated pieces comprising furniture, lighting, artwork and more found within this charming destination. Highlights include beloved Dallas-based Kufri textiles, furniture by Fong Brothers Company, accessories from The Lacquer Company and sculptural lighting and decor from Studio Henry Wilson. Artwork produced by French photographer César Ancelle Hansen also makes an appearance. Perhaps most importantly, Anyon Atelier offers pieces that easily mix into all sorts of styles and design schemes, with everything exhibited in an inspiring gallery-like setting so as to leave room for interpretation and creativity. “It is part art gallery, part retail shop and part showroom,” Brier explains. “It was born out of a nostalgia for my mother’s antique shop as well as the desire to connect with designers and design enthusiasts.” anyondesign.com

THE INSIDER CHANDOS DODSON EPLEY

SCENE

DESIGN

Houston designer Chandos Dodson Epley has officially launched Chandos Collective. It’s the culmination of years of experience, expanding Epley’s studio beyond residential design and architecture into art consulting, custom furnishings and home development. “My interior design firm has evolved over the last two decades to include many partners, employees and other businesses,” she explains. “I wanted an umbrella that really celebrated the ethos of it all.” Here, she shares more with Luxe. chandoscollective.com What differentiates Chandos Collective? Our team navigates the entire process from construction to finishing touches. We infuse our style

of understated elegance into every project, marrying classic details with modern restraint. I’m also intimately involved in each step of the process. Tell us about your goals. We help curate a home that is completely tailored to our clients. We layer art-historical references into the architecture phase, maintaining the integrity of the structure, while ensuring functionality comes first. We are building houses that stand the test of time aesthetically, while providing the most modern amenities. Anything else new for you? We are continuing to expand our range of bespoke furnishings and full-scale custom homes from the ground-up. My art advisory company, C2 Art, continues to grow as well. We have offices in both Dallas and Houston and work in 28 cities nationwide.

OPEN HOUSE Blue Print, the beloved luxury home boutique that merges furnishings, decor, tabletop accessories and more, has expanded outside of Dallas for the very first time. For its founding owners—Cynthia Collins, Caroline Eastman, Leslie Jenkins, Carrie Jane Pogoloff and Lucy Ward—the call to Austin was strong. “We were ready to expand, and opening in Austin was a natural way for us to grow our business,” the owners say. As is to be expected, the new space is bright and clean with a balanced combination of traditional and contemporary. Through the shop’s signature blue doors await a cheery mix of custom and modern furnishings, antique and vintage pieces, collectibles, fine art, lighting and one-of-a-kind accents. Moreover, the in-house design team is available to take on local projects. A portion of the store is also dedicated to entertaining, and local brides can register for an extensive collection of fine china, glassware, linens and more. blueprintstore.com

A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com

ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT

FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com

ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com

Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org

DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

LIVING

Gage selected classic elements for the kitchen, including a fluted apronfront sink from Signature Hardware and ceramic scalloped pendants by Regina Andrew. The countertops are Caesarstone’s White Attica.

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

MARK P. FINLAY ARCHITECTS “OUR INCREDIBLE CLIENTS ALLOW US TO EXPRESS OURSELVES ARTISTICALLY IN A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE FIELD, A GIFT FOR WHICH WE’RE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.”

T Mark P. Finlay, AIA PRESIDENT AND CEO

markfinlay.com 203.254.2388 mpfarchitects

he true sign of a deft professional is their ability to be flexible and design to the specifications of a range of styles for a variety of clients. Established in the 1980s in Connecticut, Mark P. Finlay Architects is a renowned firm that has expanded their scope nationwide. The project that first put architect Mark P. Finlay and his studio on the map was the design of an authentic French Norman house in Greenwich. The firm traveled abroad to source antique materials and artifacts to build into the home and the finished project was praised in the local community. “People thought the home had always been there—the ultimate compliment!”

Finlay says. That project placed the company at the center of a discussion regarding custom-designed homes in the area. When beginning a project, Finlay says he and his team start with a program meeting to establish “the client’s wants, needs and wish list items.” He adds: “As architects, we understand that we are creating the house specifically for the client, so we keep them involved in the design process and collaborate with them through completion.” The firm’s prominent design styles include homes in Georgian, Federal, Regency, modern and more. What’s Finlay’s dream design? “I would love to work on a project in Scotland, my ancestral home.”

ASK THE EXPERT What design styles are you most known for? Because we operate in such different parts of the country, we are known for our diversity of architectural styles. We are contextualists, so the environment in which we work informs our designs from project to project. The design principles of quality, comfort and scale are the connective tissue through all our work. What’s your greatest success to date? Our greatest successes have been the people we work for and the cherished relationships we have developed with all of them. With over 100 repeat clients, our priority is ensuring a positive experience for everyone. Our motivation for doing this work is knowing that each client enjoys the buildings we have designed for them and that it makes a profound difference in their lives.

ike great architecture itself, a remarkable architecture firm is the sum of many exceptional parts. So it is with SHM Architects. When Mark Hoesterey, Enrique Montenegro and David Stocker launched SHM in 2005, the three architects working in harmony proved the right combination for success. “Early on, we undertook a series of projects in Highland Park, University Park, Lakewood and Bluffview that spanned the aesthetic spectrum from modern to traditional,” Stocker says. “Applying our individual skills while working as a team put those projects and us on the map.” It also paved the way for SHM’s impressive expansion. “Over the past 19 years, we’ve grown to a team of 75,” Montenegro shares. “In 2010 we added interior design services and in 2020 Nick McWhirter joined us as our fourth Principal.” Along with teamwork, their client-centric approach has resulted in an impressive portfolio and loyal client base. “The client is the center of our creative process,” Hoesterey adds. “Their wants

Share some of your inspirations. We owe a lot to early Texas architects like John Staub, O’Neil Ford, Charles Dilbeck and Frank Welch, and to architectural philosophers like Christopher Alexander. We’re also inspired by our travels and our collection of old architecture books. What style are you best known for? We say that we are “style agnostic.” That really means there are patterns (i.e., scale, proportion, axis, hierarchy, view corridors, light orientations, etc.) that come before the choices of style. Although style is important, it really serves these higher patterns. What type of new project would you love to take on? Something that combines residential work with other romantic notions. Some ideas we’ve tossed around are large equestrian estates and boutique hotels.

As the Design Director and Principal at SPRUCED, she’s built an expert team who’ve achieved remarkable growth and an excellent reputation by applying those principles to their one-of-a-kind designs. “I launched SPRUCED from my home office in February 2019, and within a year, added an assistant, moved to a new studio and won a Rising Star Award,” Bibawi says. “Today, we are a multi-award-winning team of 10-plus creatives who design from a 6,500-square-foot studio space. When my designers and I come together to work on a project, inspiration flows and magic happens.” That unique brand of magic also includes a close working relationship with each client. “Our client onboarding process begins with an interview where we review inspiration photos and discuss design concepts,” she shares. “Following that meeting, we provide a written project recap to ensure that we have a clear understanding of the client’s vision, scope and budget.

The act of interpreting this through the lens of an individual’s preferences, habits and beliefs is the trade’s highest art form. And Jan Showers, ASID is beloved for her mastery of this “language.” For each of her clients, she conveys personality in the details and keeps things livable, but she also achieves that high-end ambience sought by all. In fact, in the “World of Jan,” as her team affectionately calls it, interior design tells a story of style, glamour and a sense of that which is effortlessly chic. “To me, a ‘graceful’

space is the goal,” she shares. “I define that as an approachable, yet luxurious environment that puts one at ease while exuding total timelessness.” She brings the essence of this perspective to every bespoke design. No wonder her fullservice design firm, Jan Showers & Associates, is in demand throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, London, The Bahamas and beyond. Every project, she says, “is different and exceptional.” It’s the perfect way to sum up the unique yet unwaveringly elegant approach evident in her body of work. As for what she’ll do next, she says, “I’d be fortunate to do more of what I’m doing, but maybe also a small, exclusive hotel in a place I adore.”

As a female leader in the field, what do you believe the future holds for women in design? Women in design have the brightest future, as long as they understand the business side. There are so many women with a great eye and good taste, but they must have the right instinct for running a business, too. I think that can be learned, but it helps to have a brain that is fairly balanced—analytical and creative.

any businesses today use social media to gain customers, able to reach new people directly and share their company’s capabilities and vision. That’s certainly true for Shelly Cotter Designs. In her first project, which she named Harvard Court, Owner and Principal Cotter produced daily videos showcasing the progress of the five-month redesign that she shared on Instagram and Facebook. Before the project ended, Cotter had created “a young and thriving company.” She’s now a big believer in the power of social media, saying, “Social media exposes us to what is happening all over the world. Everyone’s work can be displayed globally, and that level of visibility helps make us all better.” Cotter is proud of her work launching her firm, as this is her second career. After spending many years working in sales for Knoll furniture and Herman Miller, she decided to strike out on her own. “It takes courage to start over,” she says. “I have learned lots of new

Being brave and putting myself out there on social media has been hugely beneficial for me.” Cotter’s business now includes small to large renovations and, recently, new construction. SCD is known for all types of transitional and modern design. Cotter shares, “I love spaces that are clean, understated, comfortable and livable. Good design is attainable for all.”

In what ways do you include the client in your creative process? I learned through all of my years in sales with Knoll that listening to the customer is the most important thing. I begin with a question and answer session upon meeting new clients, and I get to know them thoroughly. I pay close attention to details. I also have clients select three to five interiors that they like and discuss why they like them. I invite client participation and also include them in item selections and decision-making. What type of project would you love to take on? All of our work to date has been in beautiful, transitional Dallas homes. It would be exciting to work with a few midcentury modern clients. It would also be fun to have the opportunity to do a mountain modern home. I just love that combination!

ometimes, the most memorable endeavors are those where two friends combine their passion and talent to begin a flourishing partnership. Enter, Jessie Jones and Catherine Howser. The duo have more than 16 years of experience in high-end residential design and met as co-workers at a previous firm, and today, they’re Co-Founders of Statera Interiors. “After years of working together, we recognized how well our knowledge and expertise harmonized, so we decided to establish our company,” Howser shares. The power of this collaboration was immediately proven, when their new interior design firm landed more than 30 projects in six months. When Jones and Howser met, they found their common ground in both growing up in the world of construction and innovative thinking, with each of their fathers owning businesses in the industry. Jones and Howser bring out each other’s creativity and were able to build a firm that speaks to their abilities. “We like to say that our ‘firm style’ is that of our

clients,” Jones says. “We gear each project to the client’s needs, wants and lifestyle, so that their personality can shine through in the design. Our goal is to turn the vision into a house that feels like home.”

What kinds of projects do you work on most often? We are a full-service interior design firm providing work in residential new construction, renovations and furnishings, as well as light commercial. What mantra do you live and work by? This stems from our firm name, Statera, meaning “balance” in Latin. We believe design is a harmonious balance between creativity and function, hence our mantra: Beautifully, Balanced Interiors. What’s next for your firm? More than anything, we look forward to a continuation of our specialty: designing innovative and functional interiors that are tailored to each client. Our unique skill sets, combined with a listen-and-deliver approach, provide exceptional customer service. At the end of it all, we deliver a bespoke design admired for years to come.

Turning on the Charm

Interior Design: Kara Adam, Kara Adam Interiors

F

alling in love with a house can feel a bit like being cast under a spell. One Dallas family experienced such enchantment when photos of this abode popped up in the wife’s inbox. The couple had no intention of moving their young children from the home they had recently completed with interior designer Kara Adam. But once they saw its double-height foyer, they simply couldn’t resist. “You’re greeted by a Cinderella spiral staircase,” the wife describes. “I immediately knew it was going to be difficult to walk away. It gave me that ‘feeling.’ ” News of their move surprised Adam, but she became equally enamored. Architecturally, “The house was in such great shape,” the designer says, pointing to the formal living and dining areas and family room, where light pours in through vast arched windows. With no major structural changes needed, she focused on tailoring the interior design to the owners, leaning into the romantic verve that so captured their imagination. Adam and her project assistant, Ashley Ifert, added colorful, feminine touches, using the dining room’s existing blossom wallpaper as a jumping off point. “I said, ‘Let’s lighten things up,’ and began layering in textures and patterns,” she notes. Most of the walls and kitchen cabinetry received a coat of fresh white paint. And, like brushstrokes on a canvas, lively prints and flushes of color appear throughout. Some spaces remained restrained in their palette, including the serene primary bedroom cushioned in creamy comfort with an upholstered bed and wool carpeting. Others go deeper, such as the library with an atmospheric blue shade on its walls and bookshelves. The formal living room leans into the soft, dreamy tones of a Claude Monet garden, grounded by cool green walls and twin velvet loveseats—not to mention floral notes from the lilac linen armchairs and a tufted pink leather ottoman. The rugs and draperies share similar intersecting lines. “I love patterns in relation to each other,” Adam adds. Yet, in a surprising move, she paired the dining room’s flowering walls with a bold zebra-print rug. More wallpaper choices create varying moods within the home, from the hand-painted pinkand-indigo design in the powder room to the

abstract lavender swirls in the daughter’s bathroom. For a bar area adjacent to the dining room, “We wanted a moody jewel box,” says Adam, who cocooned it in a dark geometric pattern with chocolate-gray lacquer on the ceiling and cabinetry. Cubist wallpaper brings a contemporary counterpoint to the breakfast nook framed by grand arched windows. Against the more formal architectural elements, the modern print “feels chic and cool,” the designer explains. “I love mixing a little bit of contemporary into a traditional setting to add interest.” A similar push and pull guided the furnishings, which contrast genres in silhouettes and materials. In the same breakfast nook, a lantern pendant lights a classic Eero Saarinen dining table and cane Marcel Breuer seats. Meanwhile, the family room features two sculptural armchairs and an old-fashioned English roll-arm sofa upholstered in a friendly plaid—a charming yet practical choice for everyday use. “Patterns are your friend when you have small children,” the designer says with a knowing smile. Against the more traditional architecture, graphicleaning paintings by artists like Ethan Cook, Rachel Perry and Alex Kwartler—acquired with guidance from art advisor Lynsey Provost—feel “fun and contemporary,” the wife explains. Rear doors open onto a backyard pool area crawling with ivy and covered by a canopy of mature magnolia trees, alongside a trickling lion-head fountain. Here, Adam cultivated outdoor gathering spaces with dining and seating arrangements, and poolside chaise lounges from which the parents can watch their children swim. The choice of crisp white for the sculptural concrete tables and wicker-style chairs stands out against the lush greenery. “They love to entertain outside,” Adam explains. “So we wanted areas where everyone has a spot, no matter if it’s for an intimate conversation or a larger group.” Inside and out, the spaces are imbued with a little extra magic: whether it’s everyday moments with the children doing homework in the breakfast nook, or the holidays with family draping garland along the fairy-tale staircase that forever rerouted this couple’s life. “When you put your stamp on a house, it really feels like home—and you can create those memories forever,” the wife muses.

Architecture, Interior Design and Home Builder: Roxanne and Jonathan Wimmel, Wimmel Design & Construction

U

pon first glance, this new house occupying a treecanopied corner in Houston is a study in simplicity. Its clean roofline caps the striking structure, which features metal-framed windows set into crisp-white walls. However, closer inspection reveals nuance: from the subtle dimension of the slurried brick façade to the graceful curve of the front wooden door. “We’re big believers in taking cues from our surroundings,” says architect Roxanne Wimmel, who worked alongside her husband, builder Jonathan Wimmel, to offer turnkey architecture, interior design and construction services for these owners. “We wanted to acknowledge the fabric of the neighborhood.” First developed nearly a century ago, the enclave was originally filled with bungalows. Though most of those dwellings have long since been replaced, their classic style continues to influence the designs taking shape today—this house being no exception. The Wimmels collaborated on its architectural design, with Roxanne overseeing the interiors and Jonathan the construction. To achieve the square footage required for this family— which grew from four to five members during construction—they stretched the design down the length of the property. They then oriented the main floor living spaces toward a side yard that’s shielded from the street by a low brick wall. “Because there’s not a house on the other side of that wall, a lot of natural light floods in,” Roxanne explains. This gave the interiors a sunny disposition that caters to both owners’ aesthetics, with the husband leaning more contemporary and the wife more traditional. Experts at drawing inspiration from clients and filtering that information through their own lens, the Wimmels strived to merge the husband’s and wife’s respective styles. “You’ll see clean, contemporary details in our work, but we soften those elements with raw, natural materials as much as possible,” Roxanne explains. The unassuming nature of those finishes— and their seamless integration into a more modern envelope—often requires meticulous craftsmanship, Jonathan notes: “There’s a higher level of knowledge and attention required to execute the details.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the kitchen, where the edge of a quartzite countertop curves down to rest flush atop plain-

sawn white oak cabinetry. An expanse of handmade zellige tile, meanwhile, seems to disappear behind a custom hood’s beam of reclaimed wood. On the back wall of the adjacent bar, two slabs of limestone meet not at a straight joint, but at a stylized zipper seam that contrasts against the stone’s brushed finish and chiseled edges. Cobblestone pavers on the front porch and veranda, as well as in the laundry and mud rooms, have an equally rough-and-tumble quality. “I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel in every space, so a lot of materials are repeated throughout the house but in different ways,” Roxanne says. In the powder room, the dimensions of the aforementioned floor tiles were retained, but the stone—a charcoal marble—is different and dressy enough to complement an elegant vanity sculpted from slabs of violet-streaked marble. In the primary bathroom, which required larger tiles to match the scale of a massive marble-encased tub, Roxanne had reclaimed limestone laid in a French pattern, a fluid arrangement that works with reeded-front cabinets and plaster walls to temper the rigidity of the mitered-edge vanity. From that room’s soothing gray finishes to the dark gray-bronze of the study’s walls, the colors employed throughout the home create a natural and warm palette that’s emphasized by the patina of vintage furnishings “that have lost a little bit of that newness,” Roxanne notes. The living room’s classic Fritz Hansen club chairs, for instance, had been inviting relaxation for decades before she updated them with a coat of plush shearling. A Guillerme et Chambron ottoman, reinvigorated with yellow alpaca upholstery, “has a 50-year-old finish on its wooden legs,” she adds. The dining room’s French midcentury chairs, primary suite’s timeworn Japanese bench, and cotton-candycolored bunkroom’s vintage Turkish rag rug underscore a collected-over-time feel. “We made sure to find as many antique pieces as possible to balance everything else feeling so fresh,” the wife explains. Grounded in its materiality, the beauty of each space is indisputable. “Our styles may have started off quite differently,” the wife continues as she reflects on her and her husband’s individual preferences. “But over time”—and as the design of their new home has worked its quiet magic—“they have merged into an elegance that suits us perfectly.”

A custom white oak double door conceived by Wimmel Design & Construction and copper lanterns by St. James Lighting lend warmth to the exterior of this new Houston abode. The façade features slurried brick and windows by Ram Windows & Doors.

IMAGINED LANDSCAPES Austin artist Aileen Fitzgerald paints ethereal scenery that taps into memories of place.

ainting is an act of conjuring for artist Aileen Fitzgerald. While the creative draws inspiration from places like Texas Hill Country and the sea, she pulls the scenes she paints entirely from her memory and imagination. “It’s as though my landscapes organically appear—like an entire vista is already living on the surface of the canvas, just waiting for me to reveal it,” she says. To create these ethereal works, Fitzgerald first washes her canvas in coats of waterthinned acrylic paint, which she rubs in with a cloth. “The process is a really contemplative progression of building up layers,” she explains. “I’ll water down some paint and then rub it into the canvas. It may require 20 to 50 layers, as each is very thin.” On top of this foundation, the artist then uses a dry brush technique to tease out branches, rolling hills or waves slapping against the shore. “The landscape is already there. The game is for me to detail it and pull it out of a haze,” she explains. This unique method has evolved over the last several years since Fitzgerald began painting professionally. She loved art as a child, but wasn’t encouraged to pursue her interest— nor was she supported in the only art class she ever took. “I remember my high school teacher telling me my technique was wrong. I never wet my brush and rarely switch brushes,” the artist says. When she became a critical care nurse, her hobby eventually petered out. However, after Fitzgerald found her old paintbrushes during the pandemic lockdown, she painted again for the first time in years. “It set off a blaze in my mind,” she recalls. With her creativity reignited, the artist soon took a leap of faith and left nursing to pursue her creative passion. At first, she sold her works on Instagram, which eventually led to placements in shops like Amber Interiors, a partnership with Four Hands and an upcoming show at Commerce Gallery. As Fitzgerald’s artistic career gained steam, it became clear she would need a studio. So she moved into a space in a historic building on Eighth Street in downtown Austin, where she now hosts annual exhibitions of her work. Like one of her landscapes conjured into being, her career has continued to blossom and take shape within these walls. “I am surrounded by this blank, clean, massive space that is screaming for my ideas to be just as big,” she says. “The studio has expanded everything.”

Displayed on artist Aileen Fitzgerald’s Austin studio walls are two large works (bottom) created using layers of watered-down acrylic paint on raw canvas. She uses paint, water jugs and brushes (below) to bring each ethereal piece to life. A gallery wall (left) features prints showcased in found antique and vintage frames.

or Laura Stanley, interior design is more than just a profession; it’s a cherished legacy inherited from her mother. “And so, I knew how important it was for my parents’ new house in Austin to feel like their longtime home back in Memphis, which was such a happy place for them,” the designer says. The couple’s move to Texas, which they made to be closer to family, became official when they found this house that ticked all their boxes. That it was the original work of residential designer Ryan Street, whom they already knew, was the sprinkling of fairy dust. “It was built about 20 years ago and had a good layout, but we wanted to add lots of warmth and personality,” Stanley says. “My parents are fun people, so creating a sense of welcoming comfort through layers and bright colors was key.” The opportunity also couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time. Stanley had recently founded her firm with designer Lizzie Bailey. The duo eagerly accepted this meaningful project as one of their first. “Lizzie knows my parents really well, and we all share a similar aesthetic,” Stanley adds. “She was in harmony and slid right in with her incredible eye—like suggesting we reupholster the living room sofas in an ochre-colored material with coral tape and nailhead detailing at the base.” In short, it was a dream project for everyone. Little renovation was needed beyond the kitchen. To that end, the designers brought on builders Chris Risher and Jeremy Martin to help reconfigure the space with new cabinetry and an easier flow for the couple, who enjoy cooking. Rather than wallpapering the main rooms, they embraced the cream-plastered walls throughout and added color in the form of adventurous schemes. The pantry and small study just off the kitchen received a wash of bright yellow paint inspired by a Rita Konig-designed hotel in Los Angeles. “That was a home run,” Stanley notes, her mother chiming: “I need yellow. It makes me happy.” Meanwhile, the sun room shelving dons a fiery red, while the dining room ceiling is coated in a mossy green hue. “The colors are unexpected and capture the essence of our family,” Stanley says.

Filling these rooms is a mix of treasures brought from the couple’s prior home, all augmented with new finds. Avid collectors, they spent years traveling to favorite shops in New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and New York—“especially John Rosselli & Associates and Amy Perlin Antiques,” Stanley says. Noting both the 18th-century cabinet in the living room and the sun room’s brass-tray top coffee table, her mom adds, “It’s lovely that so many of our pieces have found a place here.” Paintings and figures of myriad animals add a layer of whimsy, but the antique papier-mâché French growler bulldogs in the entry might just make guests do a double take. The home’s lively spirit continues in the primary bedroom—an effervescent escape with its mix of patterns and a palette that includes yellow, mossy green and terra-cotta red. “Mom originally wanted to go with cream, but she quickly realized that wouldn’t be the right choice,” Stanley explains. “Instead, we embraced a fun blend of her favorite colors, creating a space that truly reflects her personality.” That same authenticity also embodies the large upstairs game room, designed to host family gatherings. “All the vibrant green cabinetry had been gray, and it was fun to select more suitable and beautiful hues for that room,” says her mom, who developed a passion for color after collaborating with an interior designer on her Tennessee house years ago. She credits books and magazines for helping to cultivate her love of design: “I have an armoire upstairs filled with old ones, and it’s still so fun to flip through them.” While the interiors evoke the feel of the couple’s previous homestead, the landscape design required an aesthetic shift. Stanley’s mother, an avid gardener, has refocused on more Southwest-appropriate plantings with the help of landscape designer Rick Scheen and landscape architect John Hall. “I’ve had to adapt,” she says. “But we’ve added more greenery with ground cover, olive trees and agaves.” And yes, there are vibrant accents as well. “It’s important for people to be themselves,” adds Stanley, who advises identifying what you love and infusing it freely. “That’s really the most successful way to decorate a house. It adds joy and delight.” Just ask her parents.
