BLUEPRINT

This spring, Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud will open his first restaurant on the West Coast, Café Boulud, at the new Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills. To shape the space, Boulud and development firm SHVO tapped French Italian designer Marc Ange. “Daniel plays with French cuisine in many ways, so French heritage twisted with modernity became an essential ingredient of the design,” explains Los Angeles-based Ange. The sculptural interiors will feature an elegant neutral palette and natural stone elements, as well as Ange’s signature Refuge lamps with their breezy, palm-frond design. “In the mind of someone from Europe like myself, these tell the story of L.A.,” he says. “Some of the materials and details have been selected to evoke a French bistro or the café tradition, but the softness of the volumes and the earthy colors are, for me, the aesthetic translation of the sunny, peaceful and healthy Californian way of living.” mo-residencesbeverlyhills.com; marcange.com

TALKING SHOP MOOD INDIGO

A new interiors boutique, Mood Indigo, has recently opened right on La Jolla’s main drive. After careers in fashion and home retail, owners Dave DeMattei and Patrick Wade struck out on their own. “We loved the idea of creating our own brand, and the shop really does two things: It’s a local resource for designers and homeowners and it’s an investment in our neighborhood,” says DeMattei. “The friendly atmosphere here is what sold us on this area—besides its beauty.” (The couple and their dachshund, Penny, live just a few blocks away.) International offerings include accessories from Casa Lopez Paris and Montes Doggett, hand-dyed pillows from West African company Tensira and wool blankets from TBCo in Scotland. The shop also features local artists including photographer Chad Van Herpe, while vintage pieces round out the mix. “Furnishing the shop is like having another home,” adds Wade. “We’ve filled it with all the things we love.” moodindigolajolla.com

DESIGN 101 TIPS, INSIGHTS AND INTERIOR TRICKS FROM TWO L.A. PROS. WRITTEN BY CLÉMENCE SFADJ

Breegan Jane LUXE Next In Design 99 talent Breegan Jane creates interiors imbued with modern, approachable luxury that are unique to each client’s sensibility. Here, she shares what shapes her designs. Define luxury. For some, it means high heels and glam; for others, it’s sand and sandals— it’s about creating and enjoying the life you want. Your palettes are inspired by… European shorelines. In my opinion, they’re the reason why highlighting any space with a bright white has made such an impact for hundreds of years. I emulate that effect with Cool December by Dunn-Edwards. Go-to design trick: Using nondirectional patterns, especially in flooring. They’re great at creating the illusion of more space while instantly elevating a room. breeganjane.com Jaqui Seerman For designer Jaqui Seerman, who aims to craft entirely customized spaces, authenticity is always top of mind. The LUXE Next In Design 99 honoree tells us more about her ethos. What motivates you? Creating spaces that positively impact people’s lives by inspiring and delighting them every day. Every home needs… A versatile and comfortable statement chair. It not only adds character and style to any space, but also provides a cozy spot for relaxation and reflection. Design rule to live by: “Balance is key.” Whether it’s colors, textures or furniture placement, maintaining a harmonious balance brings a sense of cohesion and tranquility to a space, resulting in a visually pleasing See our Next In Design 99 environment. jaquiseerman.com

MEMBERS ONLY PENDRY NEWPORT BEACH

Pendry Hotels & Resorts has opened their third Southern California location, Pendry Newport Beach, near Fashion Island. Designed by Alessandro Munge, the Italian Canadian designer behind Toronto’s Studio Munge, the 295-room hotel exudes an easy-going spirit with garden-inspired decor that celebrates the lush beauty of the coastal town. But what’s also making a splash is the property’s myriad amenities, which include SET Steak & Sushi—a steak house-meets-sushi restaurant—Spa Pendry, with its high-tech treatment rooms and cryotherapy chamber, and the hotel’s inaugural members-only venue, The Elwood Club. Members will have access to music, art, travel, fashion, wellness and epicurean experiences through an ever-changing calendar of custom programs. pendry.com in bloom photos: alyson coppelli of alyvero photography. design 101 photos: breegan jane portrait, ryan garvin; jaqui seerman portrait, madeline tolle. members only photo: courtesy pendry newport beach.

From her home studio in Downey, artist Jasmyn Marie Maciel creates moody driedfloral pieces set in resin. She had been working with pressed flowers for several years when someone inquired about preserving a wedding bouquet. She shared the result on Instagram—where her feed is filled with mesmerizing process reels of epoxy pours atop delicate dried florals— and requests started flooding in. “It’s been a humbling experience,” she shares. Maciel, whose trays made from clients’ bouquets can be mounted as wall art, also grows her own favorites: roses, Queen Anne’s lace, yarrows and foxgloves. “I try to capture the details—the curvature of stems, the way the petals give the illusion of movement in the resin,” she explains. “My pieces are meant to be explored up close.” mariesfloralart.com

OUT ON THE TOWN LOS ANGELES WITH DAVID KO

SCENE

DESIGN

Melding his love of fashion with interiors, David Ko has developed a singular style that’s attracted clients including Hilary Duff and Gigi Caruso, becoming one of Los Angeles’ most innovative young designers. He shares his favorite L.A. hangs, from West Hollywood to Echo Park. maisonko.com A spot for inspiration: With its mix of vintage and contemporary, Hollywood design gallery Seventh House is what I want my future home to look like. A beloved shop: My sourcing trips always include West Hollywood’s Panoplie (below right)—they have that relaxed, refined European look down to a T. A go-to eatery: I love The Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel (bottom). It’s quintessential L.A. and also a great spot for when I want a remote office for the day. An architectural gem to admire: In WeHo, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s HQ, the Schindler House (below left). This 1922 modern home perfectly executes harmony between indoors and outdoors. A stylish bar for happy hour: El Prado in Echo Park. It’s cozy and chic, and the wood interior is every design lover’s dream!

MAKER’S MARK

Furniture designer Todd Hewitt, who honed his vision working with such innovative firms as Lawson-Fenning and Henrybuilt, has launched his own studio, Last Ditch Design. Handmade in Los Angeles, the collection includes beds, seating, storage, tables, desks and decorative objects—with new designs launching later this year. “I take a minimalist approach to my work: simple, sculptural forms and natural elements,” Hewitt explains. “Crafting from my own unique perspective, I’m interested in using the warmth of materials, their texture and shadows, rather than ornamentation.” With a focus on sustainability, he only uses ethically sourced lumber and has partnered with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit which plants a tree for every sale. “Legacy is very important to me, and these pieces are designed and built to be lived with for generations,” he continues, noting that he also does custom fabrication. “Quality and function first, aesthetics second— but I also want my designs to spark joy.” lastditchdesign.com

The German kitchen. Since 1898. www.hackerkitchens.us | hello@haecker-kuechen.us

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com

ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT

FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com

ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com

Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org

DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

LIVING

Gage selected classic elements for the kitchen, including a fluted apronfront sink from Signature Hardware and ceramic scalloped pendants by Regina Andrew. The countertops are Caesarstone’s White Attica.

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

MOD? TRAD? JE NE SAIS QUOI? BLACK-AND-WHITE TILE SUITS A RANGE OF STYLES—AS EVIDENCED BY THESE STUNNING LOOS.

Adorned in a banded pattern, Zia Tile’s Hex Zellige tiles in Ivory and Burnt Sugar bring earthy geometry to a primary bathroom in Minneapolis designed by Anne McDonald. annemcdonalddesign.com

LiLi Cement Tile’s Dama wraps the walls of a Nashville powder room by designer Benjamin Vandiver, providing a contemporary antidote to the exposed brass taps. benjaminvandiver.com

In Fredericksburg, Texas, designer Sarah Stacey employed Mosaic Tile’s Modage to celebrate this 1940s bathroom’s period features, including an original clawfoot tub. sarahstaceydesign.com

The golden undertones of Ann Sacks’ Ebony Blend Liaison Doheny tiles lend warmth to a sleek, high-contrast wet room in Bethesda, Maryland, designed by Erica Burns. ericaburns.com

DEALER’S CHOICE

“ THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WITH ALL OF THEIR SALES ASSOCIATES.

EVERYONE IS AMAZING. ”

Interior designer Kimberly Colletti has been working with PIRCH for nearly a decade. When she started work on this warm, modern transitional home in the South Bay, the choice for where to find everything she needed for the kitchen, the baths, and the home bar was easy. Scan the QR code and see the finished project.

o many, the design of a property may seem effortless— an element of nature. But while it certainly is a part of the wider world, artful landscape architecture involves a far from effortless process. Just ask Jessica Viola, the Principal and Lead Designer of Viola Gardens. “Our firm is known for our ecological and artistic approach to design, our deeply seasoned knowledge of botany and ecological restoration, our artisanal building techniques and our holistic, permaculture-based approach to designing and building,” she shares. “We craft each vision based on who a person is, looking for creative and unique ways of mapping their experience in the landscape, from yoga platforms, labyrinths, food forests and artist corners, to farm-to-table dining, an amphitheater, dance bars, play structures and beyond.” Self-described as “an organic gardener with a keyboard, a jackhammer and a book of poetry,” Viola leads her team in translating each homeowner’s wishes while honoring Mother Nature. communication, reciprocity, transparency, respect, creative collaboration and the capacity to share and be heard, the Viola Gardens team invites its clients to enjoy the journey to their verdant new world. Asked what she would like to add to the equation, Viola says, “I would love to design a botanical garden where people can gather and be inspired.”

Name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it. I love Mexico City’s inspired layering of architecture, history, foliage, art, food and a tempered life. The communities along the Amazon and Madre De Dios also inspire me, for they have built in harmony with the land—not disposing of it or their culture— for thousands of years. What has been your greatest success? There are many, but I’m proud of my book, A Hundred Bells. It is a richly illustrated guide to the core practices of ecological design. What’s next? I’m focused on my non-profit art and ecology studio. We’ll host permaculture salons and talks, bird walks, nature talks and workshops on composting, seed saving and seed banks, food forestry, landscape painting, music, poetry and more.

or a passionate interior designer, every client is the apple of their eye. Chris Barrett is proof of this. An early project working with Jerry Moss at A&M Records resulted in her building a clientele the likes of Sean Hayes, John Stamos and Candice Bergen. While this certainly launched her firm, Chris Barrett Design, to great success, Barrett points to the process of getting to know each client—celebrity or otherwise—as her greatest joy. “We glean all of the information we can from them,” she says. “What is their vision? How do they anticipate using the house? What do they love? What are their color and style preferences? It all plays a role.” This exploratory path enlightens the design, and it drives Barrett. To that end, the firm recently made a major shift. “When I lived in Los Angeles, most of my client base was in the entertainment industry,” she shares. “I am now based in the desert, and the clientele is so varied. An open-ended design brief in tandem with a tightly curated palette results in the eclectic renovation of a Los Angeles gem.

Interior Design: Sage Gracie Allard, Sage Gracie Allard LLC Home Builder: Reza Parnian, Rhino Construction Group, Inc.

A

t 16, Sage Gracie Allard’s career trajectory was kick-started with a casual question from a girlfriend at West Torrance High: “Could you decorate my bathroom?” Allard was up for the assignment. “I painted it green with purple accents, styled it, put some shelves up, bought towels,” she says. “That’s when I said to myself, ‘I’m going to become an interior designer.’ ” It’s a moment Allard remembers with particular affection now, as that childhood friend and her husband eventually became her clients, tapping the now-established designer to renovate their new home in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood. The couple, who’d searched for nearly a year before scooping up a 1977 Spanish-style residence, loved the location, expansive backyard, pool and spa. As the architecture of the house was good, the plan was to simply make a few cosmetic updates and avoid construction dust—the initial plan, that is. A simple phone call to Allard for some design advice set into motion what eventually evolved into a larger project. From the beginning stages, the designer and the wife’s long friendship was key to the entire undertaking, as the strong foundation and easy rapport between them led to a surprisingly open brief for the interior decor and furnishings. “They said, ‘We want you to be creative and do anything you want to do, we fully trust you,’ ” Allard recalls. “No client had ever said to me, ‘Sage, what do you want to do?’ ” The homeowners did have some parameters, settling on a sophisticated yet approachable palette of black, white and forest green mixed with lightcolored woods and natural stone. Allard then chose fabrics and paints in a graceful gradient of verdant hues and creamy whites, layering in a couple of wallcoverings as eye-catching touches. “I focused on bringing in more rounded edges—the sofas and teardrop end tables of the living room, for instance—to nod to the home’s Spanish vibes; I balanced those shapes visually with sharper angles, like the very straight stair railings,” she explains. “I would describe the overall aesthetic as ‘geometric indie minimalist.’ ” Five months in, even though the interiors were nearly finished, there came an unexpected turning point. Allard casually mentioned to the

homeowners that, if they were willing to consider a structural change, removing a wall of the room they were using as their home gym would allow for a walk-in wine storage space. Her clients paused, looked at each other, and immediately said, “Let’s do it.” The ensuing renovation opened the second act of the project. Per Allard’s suggestion, the couple’s wine collection now resides within easy reach of their dining room table, where a custom wooden rack is revealed through a modern wall of glass. Part of their former gym (now relocated to the garage) also became an elegant prep kitchen complete with custom cabinetry and visually striking stone slabs. Under the designer’s guidance, a larger wish list then unfurled. Allard’s clients opted to redo the kitchen floor with a textured, dark Moroccan-style tile and build in a curvaceous breakfast nook—one of the designer’s favorite moments. They decided to swap ornate Spanish-style stair rails for a more modern thin wrought-iron design and to overhaul their primary bathroom. More renovations continued outside, too. Tactile green zellige tile now enhances the pool, a detail inspired by the couple’s love of Hotel San Cristóbal in Todo Santos, Mexico, while a new backyard deck and outdoor kitchen make al fresco dining a breeze. General contractor Reza Parnian stepped in to manage the slew of changes, adroitly taking care to avoid damaging the wallpaper, paint and other interior finishes that the designer had already put in place. During the process, as her clients’ confidence and design repertoire grew, Allard snuck more color into the palette. Rose and amber hues add nuance to the primary bedroom and create a showstopping moment in a guest bathroom where the wallpaper features flourishes of pampas grass. “These are young, vibrant, intelligent people and I wanted these spaces to make them shine,” says Allard. While the homeowners’ original intention of avoiding construction dust did grow into a project that included plenty of it, the result is the same: They love their home. “Sage has made it really hard to go on a luxury vacation, because when we come back, we rediscover that our own house is just so nice,” comments the wife, adding, “Our tastes and preferences changed.” And she’s happy to boast that she knew the designer back in the day. “Even in high school, I felt that Sage was going to do amazing things.”

I

t’s hard to define a timeless design, but you know it when you see it, and that’s what my team strives for,” states Jodi Fleming. This idea, the interior designer muses, speaks to a look that embraces a sense of history; a classic style that “sort of simultaneously stretches through time, forward and backward, and is immune to trends.” Such a quality was at the forefront of her mind when recasting an Italian Revival-style property in Montecito for her Midwest-based clients. She and the homeowners agreed that the residence, built in the early aughts, offered a great architectural base. But the house also had heavier “Tuscanesque” design elements and, despite its 4-acre setting with sight lines out to the ocean and mountains, it “didn’t relate well to the land or have a good relationship to the views,” Fleming recalls. She eagerly seized the opportunity to make stylistic transformations that would reveal the property’s untapped potential. Essentially, the house “needed life breathed back into it, and we needed to enhance its access to the exteriors,” the designer describes. To do so, she collaborated with general contractor Darrell Becker and his son, Andy Becker, who served as supervisor. Landscape architect Derrik Eichelberger, who works frequently with the Beckers, rounded out the team. The creation of a brighter, breezier aesthetic inside and out quickly became a shared goal. As for the interior scheme, both Fleming and the wife believed that the spaces needed to honor the home’s Italian heritage while reflecting more intimacy and emotional depth. Notes the designer of their discussions, “My client understood that the house had an Italian villa feel, but also wanted to see some contemporary furnishings mixed in with antiques to embrace the past and present of this home.” Fleming made certain this desire would be reflected from the entry, where a trio of oversize iron-framed lanterns with a clean-lined aesthetic grace the groin-vaulted ceiling, illuminating an antique console topped with vintage vessels. The designer further articulated this ethos through an edited palette of neutral tones. Materials that emphasize texture and depth became incredibly important: Throughout the home, expertly applied plaster surfaces create a clean and bright backdrop, while wide-plank French oak flooring as well as a weatherworn

composition of stones on the wall around the kitchen range reference a rustic yet refined vocabulary. Installing repurposed, hand-hewn beams in the main public shared spaces and primary bedroom “gave the spaces a more grounded feel, and helped relate them back to the exterior,” explains Fleming. She also managed to retain the home’s large-scale stone fireplace surrounds by cutting them down into proportion with the rooms they occupy—turning what used to be oversize ornamental elements into dignified design moments that no longer overwhelm. Generously sized steel doors that separate but visually link the living, dining and kitchen areas are an intervention that seamlessly integrates contemporary materials into the architecture. “Reimagining this house with a modern twist for how we live today took a lot of the fussiness out,” Darrell observes. A window-filled family room right off the kitchen further underscores that point. Fleming also points to lighting choices such as the contemporary silhouette of the dining room’s black-glass-and-aged-brass chandelier as a key element that freshens the home’s traditional moments. “The owners feel most comfortable in a classic setting, but they embraced modern lighting,” she says. Of this alliance of old and new, Darrell concludes, “The changes we made to modernize this house still keep it congruent with the original architecture.” The ability to comfortably entertain indoors and out and to welcome guests with plentiful seating options was also important to the homeowners. To meet this need, Darrell and Eichelberger devised a powder-coated steel structure interlaced with olive branches to frame a large outdoor dining area. This space enhances the connection between outdoors and interiors while creating a casually elegant al fresco seating option. Eichelberger also came up with new plans for the grounds, which were overgrown. Part of his strategy included removing paving in the motor court in favor of limestone and gentler hardscape materials, as well as devising a decisive plant edit and adding mature olive trees and other Mediterranean plantings. As the pieces came together, it was the design team’s commitment to a shared set of values and concepts—via quite a few mood boards—that led to the pride they feel in this home’s new chapter. “Our theme of keeping everything clean, pure and honest is consistent throughout the interior to the exterior,” Fleming concludes. “It all relates.”

Paths Less Taken Los Angeles painter and perpetual traveler Leslie Nix describes her experiences in distant lands with hot wax and vibrant pigments.

WRITTEN BY DEBORAH BISHOP | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMA N

F

or Leslie Nix, boarding an airplane is always the first step to creating a body of work. Since earning a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design at 19, the artist has explored nearly every U.S. state and more than 40 countries, soaking up impressions, snapping photos and—always— sketching and painting. Once back in her studio located in a historic building of Los Angeles’ Lincoln Heights neighborhood, she translates a swirl of moments and experiences into richly layered multimedia paintings that thrum with life. Neither abstract nor photorealistic, her compositions forge their own genre of landscape art: sensory memories that serve as portals to other countries and cultures. Armed with a paint brush and heat gun, Nix applies hot wax mixed with highly pigmented oil paint to large-scale birch panels primed with alcohol dye, gesso, tissue paper and resin to create a glossy foundation. She adds the malleable encaustic mixture layer by layer, using razors to scrape it back and play with the medium’s luminosity, depth and tactile sensuality. Her process creates “almost a stained-glass effect,” she says. “There’s often these beautiful, gem-like scenarios happening underneath.” The resulting works are striated with colorful mosaic-like patterns and dimensionality. Nix toggles between working on her paintings and crafting sculptural lamps that resemble ancient treasures. She casts and carves brass remnants gleaned from her partner’s furniture-making practice into cradles for jewel-toned chunks of cast-off fragments from glass factories. “When the light shoots through, it creates this magical aurora borealis effect,” she describes. Her latest solo show, “Encaustic Impressions of Mpumalanga,” featured these one-of-akind lamps alongside her paintings at Coup D’Etat’s L.A. gallery. A group show at the same location is also scheduled this spring. Recent wanderings have taken the artist to England, Greece and Rwanda, where she spent time with mountain gorillas and traveled the country via helicopter. The geometry of the grids and terraces carpeting the East African country’s hillsides are her latest inspiration. “I’m working out the direction for my next series,” Nix hints. “I’m excited to stay put, hang with my dogs and just paint.”

Artist Leslie Nix (opposite) uses hot plates and heat guns to keep her concoctions of warm wax and saturated oil paints malleable. She applies the mixture to birch panels using brushes, palette knives and other tools (below). Snapshots from her travels (left) as well as found and collected objects, fabrics, plants and more (bottom) serve as inspiration for her encaustic paintings and slag-glass lamps.

Carefully considered finishes that blend arcs, curves, reeding and fluting bring a fresh perspective to a Spanish-style home in Orange County.

INNER BEAUTY

Interior Design: Lindye Galloway, Lindye Galloway Studio Home Builder: Kane Cassidy, Olive Tree Construction

In the great room, Lawson-Fenning’s Isherwood chairs meet a custom sofa and coffee table by interior designer Lindye Galloway. A Loloi Rugs floor covering brings in a subtle floral pattern while draperies from Solé Shades convey lightness.

S

hould a home’s interiors reflect its exterior? It’s a question that sparks constant debate, and one that Lindye Galloway carefully considered when undertaking the renovation of a Spanish Colonial Revival-style home in Orange County’s Shady Canyon community. Built a decade ago, the expansive home showcases many of the markers of this architectural style: terra-cotta roof tiles, stucco walls, arched windows and doorways. The interiors, however, leaned a tad too old-world traditional and formal—think oversize wroughtiron chandeliers and candelabra-like sconces everywhere—for the interior designer’s clients, a young couple that is considering expanding their family. So, when coming up with a plan to modernize and streamline their living spaces, Galloway was determined to introduce what she calls a “modern organic aesthetic” while still honoring the home’s architectural framework. “We knew we wanted to incorporate the Spanish style suggested by the structure, but we also desired more of a natural, earthy feel,” explains the LUXE Next In Design 99 honoree. “We felt we could ease into a modern Spanish Santa Barbara look—I just don’t think the interiors would have felt true to the architecture if we didn’t bring in at least some notes of what existed on the façade.” Her clients had fallen for the approachable yet sophisticated vibe that defines Galloway’s Instagram grid. The goal, at its essence, was to weave that feeling into their new home. In addition to lightening up the house’s heavier traditional elements, the interior needed to function more effectively for how the owners live. Their home, happily, had “those good bones,” recalls the designer, and only required minor structural changes. Galloway overhauled the primary suite’s layout, found space for a breakfast nook and tucked in some surprising elements. In the living room, for instance, one of the two arched cabinets opens to reveal a hidden bar. She also put a lot of thought into revamping the interior architecture, specifying textured, visually distinctive wall treatments that feature plaster, reeded detailing and natural stone. Modern

light fixtures, meanwhile, top off the residence’s different spaces and illuminate curvaceous furnishings throughout. “When it comes to integrating traditional Spanish style with modern organic design, I believe you can marry the two in a strong way,” Galloway declares. That union began at the front door. The entryway’s star-and-cross limestone tile is a staple of Mediterranean aesthetics. But in the gray-andwhite colorway the designer specified, the effect reads graphic and modern. “We felt like we needed to break up the home’s hardwood floor to curtail its expansiveness,” she explains of her tile choice. Other subtler tweaks also ensure that larger rooms feel cozy rather than cavernous. The kitchen’s beams were placed unevenly on purpose—“a unique touch,” notes Galloway—and a domed niche brings intimacy to a breakfast nook, where banquette seating wraps around one half of a circular table to echo the architecture’s curves. “This was unused space, so we created an arched cove as an intentional focal point,” the designer explains. Her attentiveness extends to the furniture, where rounded contours and soft shapes predominate. The unexpected placement of contemporary sconces also underlines this home’s affability. But the finishes are what really elevates this abode in the eyes of general contractor Kane Cassidy: “They’re a fantastic combination of natural and modern materials with layer upon layer of detail.” Achieving these elements wasn’t without effort. He points to the tambour wood walls in the family room and the primary bath as one example of the intricate feat his team tackled. It’s these details, from the stairway’s leather-wrapped handrails to the meticulous lines of tiles in the primary bathroom to the living room’s impactful raked plaster walls that give the home its depth. Cassidy also points out the beams that canopy the living room, family room, primary bedroom and the kitchen, adding even more warmth and texture. “It’s basically like putting flooring on the ceiling,” he quips. At the end of the day, the project was “about a home that looks intentional and well curated while also being inviting,” Galloway concludes. “Taking something that felt rather formal and traditional and giving it a modern twist—it was such a fun challenge.”

The ottomans are from the designer’s eponymous shop. She also customized the nearby island’s counter stools. Opposite: In the same space, organic reeded details deftly disguise the refrigerator and highlight the door to a pantry.
