STATE OF THE ART
AMY ART GALLERY + STUDIO After outgrowing her former outpost in size and style, artist Amy Moglia Heuerman has opened her namesake Amy Art Gallery + Studio in the Naples Design District, just one block north of her original location. “My paintings tend to be large, and they needed more space so that my clients can step back and view them in a broader context,” says Heuerman, who chose the spot for its contemporary architecture, raw open layout and soaring wraparound glazing. “The 30-foot-tall windows, beautiful light and loft-like feel established the look I wanted.” Stop by the working studio, where the artist can often be found painting, and view roughly 50 pieces that will rotate in the exhibit space on a continual basis. While her bright and happy paintings lean toward abstract expressionism, expect a range of depictions, including seascapes, impressionist florals and her popular “The Girls” series. There’s also a salon meant for artful conversations. amyart.net

JAIMA BROWN EMMERT, DAISY BENNETT Jaima Brown Emmert, creative stylist and founder of Daisy Bennett, is known for her statement-making wallcoverings that ooze vibrant colors and modern twists on classic patterns. She showcases these designs at her Naples home— aptly named “Maison de Motif,” which means “House of Print” in French. Below, she delves into her new Mural Collection, boasting 14 distinct designs in an array of colors, and why she believes wallpaper is essential in creating a happy home. daisybennettdesigns.com Tell us about the new releases. The Mural Collection is a harmonious blend of Eastmeets-West design aesthetics, infusing novelty into even the most refined patterns, resulting in an intriguing fusion of whimsy and sophistication. It spans a wide spectrum, from the opulence of tropical foliage to the allure of exotic cheetahs; the delicate beauty of butterflies to the intricate tapestry of vining leaves. These designs mirror my
deep affection for nature and a vibrant palette. What are your favorite designs? The Chinoiserie Blossom Mural stands out as a cherished favorite, drawing inspiration from my mother’s Japanese peonies and tea roses as well as my own lemon tree and my African Grey parrot, Lily. And the Heron Mural paints a serene picture of lakeside life inspired from my back garden, where tall herons share the stage with sunbathing turtles by the lake. What keeps you inspired? My inspiration comes from many places like fashion, jewelry, movies, old wallpapers, travel, nature and art exhibits. I love visiting botanical gardens and flower shows to stay updated on the latest trends and styles. Antique wallpaper documents also inspire my designs, allowing me to blend old ideas with modern lifestyles. I’m particularly fond of the playful wallcoverings from the 1950s and ’60s, and I try to infuse that spirit into my work.

AC HOTEL NAPLES 5 TH AVENUE Make plans for a winter staycation at the new AC Hotel Naples 5th Avenue. With interior design by DLR Group and artwork curated by Kevin Barry Art Advisory, the hotel offers three stylish stories that evoke a sense of place along with European sophistication. “Drawing inspiration from the region’s majestic bald cypress trees and lush greenery, our design exudes that feeling of natural serenity,” explains Valentina Castellon, principal and hospitality interior design leader at DLR Group. The interior palette, featuring mossy light green and warm white tones, “bathes the spaces in inviting brightness, creating effortless transitions between different areas,” Castellon adds. Guests can escape to rooms dressed in woods and off-white tones, custom graphic wallcoverings and minimalist details—each with a private balcony—and mingle in indoor-outdoor social spaces showcasing works by an eclectic group of local artists. Lisa Kahn, founder and CEO of Lisa Kahn Designs, has revealed The Sanctuary Collection for Chelsea House, an impactful new assortment that includes furniture such as desks, bookshelves, mirrors, lighting and decorative accessories. The line is infused with elements and motifs she believes resonate with the soul—from crystals and textured woods to sacred geometries and celestial symbols. “My approach, centered on the concept of sanctuary, leads me to view spaces as more than just protective shelters. They’re crafted to nourish the soul by integrating the beauty and harmony of nature into our everyday existence,” Kahn says. “With this collection, my aspiration is to enhance both our living spaces and daily practices, encouraging contemplation and a strong sense of connection.” One of her cherished pieces is a white writing desk with delicate gold accents, which Kahn envisioned as a sacred place for journaling or creating. Another prized favorite is a navy bookshelf with glass doors, accented with gold details showcasing phases of the moon across its front panels. “The moon and stars aren’t mere aesthetics; they encapsulate the serenity and rhythm of the natural world,” she says. “The very essence of these celestial emblems aligns with the sanctuary I wish to bring into every space.” lisakahndesigns.com

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com
ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT
FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com
ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com
Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org
DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Chevron Comeback Arguably an overdone go-to of the early aughts, New York City designer Nick Olsen implores design buffs to recall chevron’s posh uses—think Emilio Terry chairs, 18th century Georgian doors, and those memorable floors by Albert Hadley. “I keep going back to chevron because you can tweak the proportions, add embellishments and color, and, voila, it feels fresh all over again,” he raves. Case in point: this Olsen-designed Bedford, New York, dining room. nickolsenstyle.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Ever the chameleon across styles, the check pattern can read orderly and Bauhaus, deliver a charming folk vibe, or harken back to retro midcentury days depending on the environment. “It’s an interesting mix of old and new,” says designer Elizabeth Mollen. TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

BELLY UP The subtle deco curvature of the metal Hudson Bar Stool by New York designer Anthony D’Argenzio (outdoor-friendly and available in two additional finishes, plus a counter height option), in collaboration with Industry West, mimics the undulating, green-topped bar. From this vantage point, imbibers are treated to a theater of tile featuring a bespoke scene of two cats (a nod to the bar’s name) against the Williamsburgh Savings Bank and the New York skyline in the interior’s signature green hue. This striking tableau exemplifies Neidich’s myriad inspirations—Parisian bistros, boutique hotels, diverse decorative styles and periods—combined in a look all his own. industrywest.com

CORNER BOOTH “I love sitting in cafes in Paris’ 6th where photographs of famous actors who have dined there line the walls,” says Neidich. “It tells so many stories.” The restaurateur’s hope is to replace the black-and-white portraits in his own establishment with those of modern-day artists and creatives who have had a memorable experience at his venue. Rachel Donath’s metal Arte mirror, leaning above the ledge of a coveted corner seat, reflects the dozens of frames that currently hang. The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

hen a truly collaborative project comes to completion, the end product is more magnificent than any single contributor could have delivered on their own. Founded in 1984, Smith and Moore Architects has long believed in the power of collaboration—be that with the client or the artisans and craftspeople that they choose to work alongside. “Our relationship with our clients is one of immersive collaboration from the initial introduction through the life of the project,” says Principal and Architect Daniel Kahan. The firm, led by Partners Harold Smith, Jonathan Moore, Peter Papadopoulos and Kahan, states: “A thorough understanding of our clients’ daily lives and their visions for how they want to live is essential to designing successful projects. Through open and continuous dialogue, we make our clients part of the project team.” And when it comes to partners, they approach their relationships and alignments with artisans and craftspeople

as “similarly essential to every project.” Kahan adds: “Employing the highestquality materials and levels of finesse in design can only be successful with a universally focused project team. We pride ourselves in this collaboration and in the final results being uniquely greater than the sum of their individual parts.”
What style is your firm most known for? We have always prided ourselves on being able to apply modern ideas and standards of living to classical traditions and frameworks, yielding timeless designs that suit the distinct lifestyles of our clients. The projects that emerge from this process result in design solutions that range from intensely classical architecture to more modern and contemporary buildings. What are some key influences? Much of the basis for our work comes from the study of both classical architecture and the interpretations of it by our more modern forebears. We strive not to be swayed by today’s current trends, and instead are inspired by the timeless examples of taste and quality that have come before us.

ometimes, all it takes to see a dream realized is a single person or organization betting on you. Such was the case for Faith Fix, ASID. In 1998, she and her team at Freestyle Interiors were simultaneously awarded two of the first model homes in prestigious neighborhoods in Bonita Springs and Naples: Bonita Bay and Mediterra. “Our firm was located in Fort Myers at the time, and we made the decision to move to Bonita Springs,” Fix explains. The projects have resulted in many years of working with builder partners and clients. Many of them still comprise the firm’s client base today. Another wave of growth occurred when a
Boston developer hired Freestyle to design 74 speculative waterfront homes starting in 2008. Shortly thereafter, Freestyle was selected as the design team for Mangrove Bay in Naples from its inception. In 2018, Robyn Lang-Shankland moved from Scotland to join Fix as a Lead Designer, and in 2021, Freestyle opened the commercial division. In January of last year, Freestyle Interiors merged with Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. Of the aesthetics and approach that has brought them so much success, Lang-Shankland says, “We are chameleons of design who push boundaries to give our clients something unique.”
ASK THE EXPERT How do you include the client in your creative process? Lang-Shankland: We hold hands throughout the process, listening and learning from the client’s loves and lifestyle. From the beginning, we share inspiration images and create mood boards, which help us to envision a beautiful path toward their dream home. What type of project would you love to take on? Lang-Shankland: Although we are currently designing a private airport, I have yet to do so for a private jet—that would be fun! What’s next for your firm? Fix: We are excited to now have a design studio in downtown Naples to service our local clients, as well as the DBI office in Fort Myers to better serve our Sanibel Island clients. There are some exciting products and services coming out in the next 12 months, which will be announced as they unfold. Stay tuned! iews upon spectacular views. It’s what immediately sold a Dallas family on this ample waterfront residence in Naples’ Port Royal neighborhood, where dolphins frolic in the surf and there’s always a steady parade of boats. “The first thing you see when you walk in is this huge bay window that looks out over the water,” designer Kara Adam describes. “It’s a ‘wow’ moment.” The property would serve as a vacation home for the owners, longtime clients of Adam. Here, she wanted to honor their traditional style while creating a coastal haven prime for entertaining and relaxing. Doing so would require an extensive remodel, for which the designer collaborated with architect Jon Kukk and general contractor Joe Beauchamp. As expected, those covetable bay window views drove many of the team’s decisions. To emphasize the sight line to the outdoors from the entry, for instance, they dramatically opened up the foyer by transforming the walls into graceful columns. But the most noticeable change took place on the lower level, which offered three living areas. Catering to the homeowners’ love for entertaining in a more functional way, the group carved out a wine room, lanai, and chic bar with a dramatic backsplash made of water-jet-cut blue-and-white marble. “It’s fully transformative,” Kukk says of the space. “We took a house that didn’t have a covered living area outside and created a usable indoor-outdoor retreat.” Further, new floor-toceiling glass doors fully open, allowing gatherings to spill onto the back grounds. There, landscape architect Scott Windham lowered the waterline’s privacy hedges and added a splash of color using a purple bougainvillea that runs across a perimeter fence. “Although there’s interest,” he says, “it is meant to be a calm and cohesive area—much like the interior spaces.” The pool was also resurfaced with a glimmering gray-blue glass mosaic tile, and the structure’s exterior received a facelift with a coat of creamy-white paint, a taupe roof and Bahamian-style shutters. This breezy scenery inspired Adam’s selections for the interiors. “We wanted to keep everything
quiet and let the views shout,” she says. So the designer chose fabrics in natural tones, including cream-colored sofas and armchairs, pillows in varying prints, and off-white linen draperies with a blue trim. “I consider blue a neutral,” she explains, “so we used a lot of it, because blue blends with everything.” Clean-lined furnishings maintain the owners’ desired classic feel, and light wood accents impart a sense of airiness. Still, Adam thoughtfully welcomed occasional opportunities for lively patterns through wallcoverings, such as a blue floral print adorning a guest bathroom. She appointed the most dynamic motif for a chic statement in the kitchen: Amid the white cabinetry, the designer designated a backsplash using a glass-covered de Gournay wallpaper depicting colorful birds and fauna. “Because the kitchen is muted, this was a way to add some drama to the space,” she observes. “It becomes another ‘window’ to the outdoors.” Other whimsical moments are sprinkled throughout the home from the couple’s prominent art collection, curated by advisor Lynsey Provost. An energetic pink painting by Günther Förg takes center stage in the family room, and a green arboreal scene by Harold Ancart is a commanding presence in the great room. The staircase, meanwhile, is illuminated by the neon tubes of the bold Mary Weatherford piece the owners pass while en route to their suite, an expansive oasis worthy of respite. In their bedroom, twin oversize club chairs face the water to encourage lingering with coffee, while another seating area near the fireplace is perfect for cuddling up. The room also leads to the husband’s and wife’s separate offices, each with its own distinct vibe. Hers is adorned with a feminine, pink-lacquered desk and geometric wallpaper, and his is sharply dressed in dark blue grass cloth and fixed with French doors that lead to a private patio. Despite the home’s voluminous size and many gathering spaces, it maintains an intimate, inviting sensibility. “We’ve created all these different moments, but it still has a cozy feel,” Adam describes. “It’s a serene coastal retreat, yet it’s playful and fun, with touches of whimsy at every turn.”

F
rom her studio, a large outbuilding on her expansive North Port property, artist Cat Tesla transforms moments of mindful meditation into paintings. The rural setting, rich with trees and birdsong, offers ample places to sit and center herself before she begins working on the vibrant abstractions that have won her a devoted following. “I want to enter my studio without any preconceived ideas about what I’m supposed to paint,” Tesla says. “There’s a great quote by Helen Frankenthaler I’m always reminded of: ‘Every canvas is a journey all its own. There are no rules. Let the picture lead you where it must go.’ ” In that spirit, rather than literally interpreting the landscape, Tesla instead conveys the feeling of being in nature, the sway of the trees inspiring her brushstrokes. “Abstraction is a response to life and the external world: It’s always
moving,” she observes. “Abstract art refers to the internal, the transcendent, the unseen. That’s what I’m sensing and responding to in my work.” Before deciding to pursue her creative practice full time, Tesla was a genetic counselor at Emory University in Atlanta. “Science is creative problem-solving, and so is painting,” she says. It’s a quest that brings the artist into the studio daily, where she works on multiple pieces at a time thanks to a clever system of movable interior “walls” built by her husband. “The pieces are like siblings— they all grow up together,” she says with a chuckle. Her paintings, primarily done in acrylic and oil with details in graphite and oil stick, “all inform each other,” Tesla describes. Currently, she is focused on two ongoing series, “Exhale” and “Feeling Good.” After making the move to North Port from Atlanta in April 2022, “The first thing I did was exhale,” the artist recalls. “There’s something serene yet active about the Florida landscape, and that’s
what I wanted to capture.” The resulting works are tied to nature and the seasons, some colors even pulled from the begonias and hibiscus in her garden. “Feeling Good”—begun during the pandemic— is nonobjective, more abstract. “It was my way of coping during that time,” she explains. “I kept visualizing that we’d all be feeling good again one day.” Other recent projects include four works for Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute, where Tesla had once been a patient. Now cancer-free, she embraced the humbling opportunity for her creations to offer momentary mental escapes for patients living through the same treatments she once underwent. “I think of my larger paintings as worlds you can enter,” the artist describes, adding that she likens her smaller pieces to windows. Also on her mind is her annual lineup of classes, held both online and in person. “Teaching is my way of giving back, and it’s such a privilege,” she says. “Art is about conveying a feeling and evoking a response, but more than that, it’s about connection.”
North Port artist Cat Tesla (bottom) paints colorful abstract works (opposite) inspired by nature, particularly her own surroundings on her sprawling property. Creating art, she says, is part of her daily routine. “I like to honor where I am that day,” says Tesla, who transitioned to the industry full time after a scientific career.

T
he breezy white interiors of a home near the beaches of Naples might conjure images of shiplap, swaths of blue-and-white stripes and sunny days spent whiling away on a wicker chaise. But for the husband and wife who purchased this newly built residence, serenity didn’t come with traditional nautical decor. “We wanted it to be unique; a design that worked in communication with the surrounding nature,” the wife says. To keep their interiors out of the coastal comfort zone, the couple sought the fresh perspective of friend and designer Colleen Simonds. Upon first visiting the home by general contractor Chris Stout, she was struck by its expansiveness. “This is not a house with nooks and crannies,” the designer observes. “The scale of the rooms is impressive, the ceilings are high, and when the entire back of the house is open, the indoor-outdoor feeling is extraordinary. I understood that my challenge would be to impart a warm, comfortable style full of personality.” To that end, she developed a palette of wallcoverings to replace expanses of white Sheetrock. This includes a faux linen for the living area’s seating niche, a sand-colored grass cloth for the primary bedroom and the den, and a handwoven raffia with a bold botanical print for the powder room. To cozy up the white oak floors, Simonds sourced rugs that “would be warm, interesting, comfortable and textural,” she describes. The living area’s new sofa and vintage chairs, which gather beneath a vaulted ceiling, are grounded by a wool carpet with a variegated texture that “feels casual,” the designer says. “If I walked across it with sandy feet, it would be okay.” Similarly, on the adjacent loggia, a sisal weave stands up to wet footsteps coming in from the pool. To these warm neutrals, she added accents of blue through artwork, upholstery and even the interiors of the kitchen’s upper cabinets. But it’s not just any blue, Simonds clarifies. “I wanted to be thoughtful about the tones and not revert to navy and white,” she explains. “This is a medium blue that connects to the outdoors. It feels logical that it’s there.”
Simonds then took more liberty with color in the private areas, which flank the main living spaces in two wings: One side holds the primary and guest suites, while the other houses the children’s bedrooms and a playroom. The couple’s suite is awash with the shades of a pink sand beach—blush tones on the brass bed, golden swirls on burl wood nightstands and lustrous sea-blue tiles in the adjacent bathroom. In the daughter’s bedroom, a disco ball throws dappled light over a pink vintage chaise and grape-purple rug. But all this is mere preamble to the drama of the playroom, where a mural covers the walls with giant, geometric swaths of bold colors. This, along with carpet tiles in a blue-and-white checkerboard pattern, provides the backdrop for a large L-shaped sectional upholstered in a vibrant cobalt blue. “You might think this was one area where we felt outside our comfort zone,” the wife says, “but we loved it from the start. It’s fun without feeling too juvenile.” Another win was the designer’s discovery of the dining area chandelier, an artful piece that combines swags of hand-tied rope knots with glowing ombre glass orbs. “That space was tricky, because I needed to fill the volume without blocking the view,” she explains. “This piece checked those boxes. The rope detail feels casual and beachy but not conventional.” In the primary bedroom, Simonds defied another convention by filling the window alcove with a shearling-draped swing, rather than the expected armchairs and ottoman. From this vantage point, the homeowners enjoy the full impact of landscape designer Kevin Schafer’s composition of lush plant textures and colors surrounding the saltwater pool, “which imparts a tropical, resort-like feel while providing privacy,” he says. It’s just what the owners envisioned for their getaway. “You really feel like you’ve escaped to some remote tropical spring,” the wife says. “From the hanging chair to the reading nooks and the loggia’s fireplace, we have no shortage of spots to curl up with a book or take a nap. It really helps us slow down.”

F
or years, designer Bria Hammel’s clients had escaped the harsh winters of Minnesota for Naples, where they owned a condominium. Eventually, though, the couple felt it was time to expand their footprint in the Sunshine State so they could host friends and extended family for their regular sojourns. The gracious four-bedroom home they acquired was certainly large enough for the gatherings they envisioned, but its dark finishes didn’t portray the calm, casual atmosphere they desired. “We had to shift the meaning of the house by taking out the formality to make it more approachable,” Hammel explains, adding that the style needed to lean more Southern than tropical. “They wanted this to feel like a retreat—somewhere they could come and relax.” Although modifications were in order, the structure did offer plenty of advantages. The layout was largely suited to the clients’ intergenerational needs, and the kitchen had been renovated with high-quality finishes and appliances. So, working with general contractor Joe Smallwood, Hammel made impactful gestures such as transforming the formal dining room at the front of the residence into a cozy media room, a more apt use for the family. “We wanted the space to feel playful for the grandchildren but sophisticated enough for it to be seen right off the foyer,” she says. Down came the bold wallpaper and up went a light-blue, striped linen wallcovering, which the designer installed horizontally for a unique effect. Here and in other spaces, she repurposed the owners’ condo furnishings, rounding them out with fresh acquisitions. “We started with those existing pieces and then worked around them,” she explains, pointing out how her clients’ sectional coexists with the media room’s new game table, chairs and toy storage. To help lighten the interior framework, Hammel replaced the high-sheen flooring throughout the residence with wide oak planks in a natural finish, then established a color palette of soft blues, sage greens and pale yellows. “Although it’s playful, it’s still very calm,” she observes. Punches of whimsy also come from select wallcoverings, particularly in bathrooms, such as a cheeky flamingo print in
a powder room. “We didn’t want it to feel overly tropical, but this is the clients’ Florida home,” the designer acknowledges. “So we encouraged them to have some fun.” Still, most spaces called for restraint. In the double-height great room, for instance, a lightblue sofa joins delicately adorned armchairs and benches against a white backdrop. Bedroom walls also eschew pattern and color in favor of layered fabrics and artwork, particularly pieces by local artists as a way of honoring the surroundings. Jute rugs and touches of rattan, like the great room’s coffee table and the primary bedroom’s nightstands, add a dimension of texture while incorporating neutral tones. And light fixtures, too, impart a casual feel, including the breakfast nook’s woven beaded fixture, the primary bedroom’s bamboo chandelier and the brass sconces found around the house. These natural materials help emphasize the property’s indoor-outdoor sensibility. The great room’s large stacking glass doors open fully to the lanai, home to a well-used seating area overlooking the pool. Echoing the interiors, Hammel outfitted this space with similar textures and tones—wicker, blue, white—so it appears as one cohesive gathering area when the great room’s doors erase the boundaries. “They are open and complementary to each other,” she says, adding how both furnishing arrangements allow for a seamless flow. Near the lanai, a grill station and large table support the family’s alfresco dining preferences. But when not enjoying a meal amid the lush grounds, the owners have another cozy place to savor the warm climate at the front of the house. Making a hospitable first impression, the designer endowed the generous porch with pineappleshaped lanterns, a quartet of rocking chairs, and a blue ceiling and shutters against a clean-white exterior. “We wanted it to feel fresh, with a mix of Southern and coastal details,” she says. From the front door to the upstairs bedrooms, the owners’ new winter outpost offers the breezy, carefree feeling they crave when eager to warm up from their home state’s colder weather. As Hammel perfectly summarizes: “It’s playful, happy and inviting.”

Although the phrase “ones to watch” usually calls to mind an up-and-coming new talent, it can sometimes describe the legend who always endeavors to break the mold anew. Enter, John Marquette. Decades into his career, the interior and furniture designer specializes in working with the best Milan-famous brands, like B&B Italia, Minotti Cucine and Fendi Casa. His pieces have been renowned for decades, so much so that a 1994 collection will be on display at Art Basel this year to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Marquette has also taught courses on furniture design and was commissioned to outfit the de la Cruz Collection museum in Miami Design District. But his latest endeavor is that of which he is most proud. “Early this year, I will be opening 4141 Design in Naples,” he says. The showroom has become a go-to in Miami, and now, a new market will have the chance to explore collections from beloved Italian brands.

I LIKE TO NURTURE THE LOVE OF DESIGN AND FURNITURE IN OTHERS.”
Connecting Over Design Along his journey, Marquette has experienced close collaborative partnerships with individuals who share his passion for making design more accessible. “I am most inspired by these fellow design devotees,” Marquette says. “One such person is Craig Robins, who created Miami Design District. Similarly, the developer who approached me about 4141’s Naples location, Kevin Stoneburner, is proving a great influence for me. He saw what I achieved in Miami and his belief in bringing it to Naples has been inspiring and rewarding.”

Asked to share one of his favorite projects to date, Marquette says, “We provided the first terminal for Virgin Voyages in the world, and our goal was really to set the bar for the others to come. It was exciting!”

TO CONSTANTLY CREATE SPACES THAT REFLECT THE HOMEOWNER AND DELIVER ORIGINAL INTERIORS IS MY GOAL.”
DANIELLE REARDON, PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
Style That Suits “One home can be full of color, while the next client desires spaces void of it,” Reardon says. “Personally, I prefer to incorporate texture into my designs and love playing with the juxtaposition of elements, such as crystal chandeliers against hand-hewn wood grains, but my approach is all about the client.”
Goals, Growth, Go-Getting

In many cases, the most successful individuals in their field have a diversified background that speaks to many adjacent pursuits. Enter, Danielle Reardon. After studying architecture and working in textiles, the creative took a hiatus to raise her three children. Some years later, they were grown and telling her—alongside friends, co-workers and mentors—to take the plunge into her true dream: opening an interior design firm. “I had earned a degree in the trade, and that tremendous urging and support was the last push I needed,” she shares. Abodeable was born. Before long, Reardon also partnered with Jesse Brawley, who has been building in Naples for 30-plus years, to establish a construction division. “This fall, my third venture will come to life in Abodeable Home,” Reardon enthuses. “It will be my flagship showroom, catering to the discerning Naples local who appreciates bespoke furnishings and accessories.” Left Vibrant colors were pulled from the dining room art onto the table via hand-blown glasses and dinnerware. Reardon shows her ambitious side and ardent devotion to design. • What’s next? Once I feel that the flagship store is complete, I would like to expand to other beachside towns. • Define success. If the company is growing, that means people are loving what we are delivering, and that is success. • Share your off-the-clock life. I’m never off the clock! My hobby is my work. Occasionally I go on a run, but even then, I am thinking about projects and making plans.

FUSING TRADITION AND INNOVATION, WE BRING EXCEPTIONAL WORKS TO LIFE.”
LOUIS BELTRAN, MAESTRO, SCULPTOR, ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER
Steps of Skill Beltran shares the process Belt undertakes for each custom creation: • First, the concept is envisioned and interpreted by me, with input from our design team. • Then, it is drawn to detail by architects and designers to ensure it suits the project, dimensions, etc. • Millenary techniques, such as forging, chiseling, hammering, sand and lost wax casting and repoussé are then executed by hand. • Lastly, special finishes like oil, beeswax and hand-applied patinas are the final touch.

In any creative pursuit, seeing a talented individual dedicate themselves to a niche is exciting. Enter, Louis Beltran, who, alongside his family, has been crafting unique metalworks for residential design since opening Belt in 1985. From classical to contemporary, railings to art commissions, the works produced by the firm are forever pushing boundaries and redefining the possibilities of metal use. “Each project we’ve completed has been a milestone in our portfolio, expanding our horizons and opening our clients’ imaginations,” Beltran says. Based in Miami and New York City but collaborating on projects throughout the globe, the Belt team has won many an award for its beautiful designs—and unparalleled craftsmanship. “We have honed our skills in the old-world techniques of blacksmithing, bronzing, forging and casting, combining them with cutting-edge craftsmanship.”
“We are developing limited-edition collections of some of our more sought-after pieces, such as lighting fixtures, furniture and surfaces,” Beltran says. “In this way, we will make our timeless designs more accessible.”
