Ahead of the Curve

Tropical Beauty

Following her own sevenstep process, an interior designer and her architect husband create a home that truly supports their lifestyle.

An artist assembles well-worn fabrics, pages torn from old books and other discarded items to create metaphors of renewal.

By rounding corners and incorporating Art Deco forms in soft colors, a team gives a high-rise a contemporary endemic quality.

A 50-year-old residence reaches its full potential as a tranquil, cheerful retreat in the hands of a talented group of professionals.

What Sustains Us

For this issue on The Power of Architecture, I’ve been reflecting on its purpose and meaning. Aside from shelter, security and function, architecture serves as a spatial arrangement that forges communities and speaks to the culture of a place. At best, the spaces that surround us enrich the quality of interactions we have within them. It’s the reason we feel peaceful while sitting by a poolside loggia or happiness when ascending a stairwell with a view of nature. Our homes, and the buildings we encounter in our daily lives, also reveal much about how we see ourselves. The potency of architecture lies in its ability to innovate through materiality and design, to push us to think differently about our environment, and, most importantly, to lift the human spirit.

The most innovative dishwasher ever. From the world’s premier sustainable appliance brand.

With CornerIntense®, the industry’s first rectangular-motion spray arm, Beko’s 36, 38 and 39 model dishwashers clean dishes like never before. But they also use half the water and two-thirds the energy. It’s the most significant breakthrough in dishwasher technology in nearly 100 years. Along with this revolutionary approach, Beko’s new line includes custom panel options with fully flush installation and industry-standard dimensions. It also boasts a suite of impressive features. beko.com/us-en bekoappliancesusa beko_usa bekoappliancesusa

• The EverClean™ filter automatically rinses with pressurized water to remove food residue and debris, keeping it cleaner up to four times longer.

• DeepWash™ technology uses three water-adjustable jets to make sure tall bottles or jars with narrow openings get the extra powerful clean they need, too. • Next up, SelfDry™ unseals and opens the door on its own, letting air in to dry dishes naturally without the use of additional energy. Oh, and did we mention? These dishwashers are so quiet (the 39 model’s operating sound level is 39dBa), you’ll need the red light that shines on the floor to know they’re running. They’re the planet’s new best friend—and yours too. Bring your Beko home, starting in late May 2022.

Cleaner dishes. Cleaner planet. Cleaner conscience. Beko’s mission is simple, yet impressive. It aims to redefine what is possible in terms of performance, reduce the use of natural resources and price within the reach of everyone who wants to lead a healthy and eco-friendly life. It seems a tall order, but Beko has done it time and again, and its latest endeavor champions the trio of intentions.

Rising to the challenge of the dirtiest dishes, glassware, pots and pans, Beko dishwashers conquer it all for more peace of mind.

TALKING SHOP FINE FRENCHIE

Tucked away in the creative enclave of Miami Ironside, discover artist and fashion designer Valeria Krasavina’s new showroom, Fine Frenchie. Inspired by her French bulldog, Rabby, you’ll be immersed in a fantastical world of fashion, art and homewares that will add fun to any space. finefrenchie.com What inspired you to create Fine Frenchie? As an artist and a fashion designer, I wanted to create a character that combines my two passions, and that’s

how fashionista Frenchie came to life with all her designer outfits and her fabulous lifestyle. Also, observing my Frenchie since in 2018 has given way to the witty humor that touches people’s hearts. What can patrons find in your shop? I design and produce everything locally in Miami in very small quantities, which is why most of our items are keepsakes. What started from a drawing has now developed into a line of products that includes collectible art prints—that come with a certificate of authenticity—coasters, candles, throw pillows, silk scarves and wallpaper. Because I have control over production, I’m able to create capsule collections every two months.

BLUEPRINT 300 WEST BROWARD

In a sea of high-rises in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, 300 West Broward will dramatically stand out as the tallest in the city and for its uniquely sculptural shape. Jutting into the sky, two 38-floor towers will connect in a symbolic oblong form— the space created between them adding to its compelling appearance—and sit atop a 10-floor podium positioned as a pedestrian-friendly gateway to nearby transportation hubs and cultural landmarks. Although an opening date has not yet been announced, the anticipation is rising for this breathtaking, mixed-use tower designed by ODA, with Stantec as the architect of record. With 956 residential units starting on the 11th floor and penthouse lofts situated on the top two levels, the site will offer rich amenities such as sunset and sunrise pools, a lounge, a library and a health and fitness center. oda-architecture.com

MALMBERG STUDIO Award-winning Pensacola photographer Robert Malmberg has now translated his fine art photography into a nature-forward wallpaper collection with imaginative patterns. Many of his designs are inspired by the extensive botanical landscapes of the South, including his Magnolia Wild print, which contains dozens of still-life images of magnolia flowers during the phases of their life cycle. “I’m always inspired by my surroundings, and the unique Florida landscape provides endless opportunities for creating,” says Malmberg. “My Sunken Garden print, in particular, has distinctive South Florida energy,” he describes of his design boasting photographs from the botanical garden of the same name. The Malmberg Studio Wallpaper collection can be found at Twill & Texture in Miami. robertmalmberg.com

Artist and designer Carly Kuhn, known as The Cartorialist, recently moved from Los Angeles to Miami, where she opened a new design studio, The Cartelier. Kuhn, who became Instafamous for her fashion illustrations and collaborates with esteemed brands such as Dior and Oscar de la Renta, recently debuted a wallpaper and textile collection starring eight of her hand-drawn designs. Inspired by her move to Miami, the collection—which feels as if the artist drew the designs directly on your walls—features peacocks, cocktails, dainty stripes, whimsical chairs and nature. “I was particularly interested in the iconic image of palms: bold yet timeless. And it felt like the perfect pattern to bring into the collection,” she says of her Palms on Palms design. cartorialist.com

THE INSIDERS PIONEER LINENS

SCENE

DESIGN

Impressive by any standard, luxury linen retailer Pioneer Linens is celebrating 110 years in business in West Palm Beach. Helmed by its third and fourth generations of women—Penny Murphy and her daughters, Marissa Murphy Adriaasne and Camille Murphy Kubicek—the company continues to evolve with the changing scene of Palm Beach. Below, Penny Murphy takes us through the evolution of the store. pioneerlinens.com Then and now. Originally founded by my grandfather in 1912, Pioneer Linens began as a hardware store. As more people settled in the area, the company expanded to sell products that met their needs. After the hurricane of 1928, my grandfather reopened the business in Downtown West Palm Beach. When my father, George, returned from war and took the helm of Pioneer Linens, his insight changed merchandising and led the company to become what it is today: the luxury linen resource for Palm Beach. Secret to success. Keeping Pioneer Linens a family-owned business. We truly take the time to understand our customer needs and build relationships with them. Also, with our Pioneer Linens Signature Collection, clients can shop for specialty embroidered items and monogram options not available at department stores. The inspiration. Our customers include an influential group of celebrities, musicians, philanthropists, designers and executives who truly are entrepreneurs, and they motivate us to stay one step ahead in captivating the demand of our consumers year after year. Girl power. Working as a team has made me closer with my daughters. Camille is our buyer, and it’s a joy helping her expand her knowledge of buying inventory for a vast array of in-store merchandise. Also, with my background of starting our website in 1998, I’m able to work with Marissa to keep our e-commerce site relevant. Watching the company grow with their leadership is more than I could ask for, and I know my great-grandfather and father would be proud.

A LA CARTE Don your chicest fascinator or bow tie for a day of dining and socializing at the new Carousel Club at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale. Drawing from its name, the venue’s centerpiece is a stunning antique carousel. Designed by lauded Studio Collective, the tented and expansive open-air spaces flaunt decor inspired by the Camargue region in the South of France—a saltwater marsh area known for its pink flamingos, lush vegetation and indigenous Camargue horses, one of the oldest breeds in the world. Sporty motifs and greenery honor thoroughbred horse racing with a wink and a nod to the iconic racing stripes and equipment unique to the activity. Guests are treated to rotating culinary pop-ups from various beloved chefs, lively day-to-night entertainment and epic views of the race track. carouselclub.com

HOMEOWNERS WHO PRIORITIZE HOLISTIC HEALTH IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS ARE LOOKING TO THE SOUTH—WHERE WELLNESS COMMUNITIES AND AGRIHOODS ARE RISING FAST. W R I T T E N B Y K AT H R Y N O ’ S H E A- E VA N S

It’s not often that a kid’s birthday party will change your life. But for Monica Olsen, who hosted her son’s fourth fête at Serenbe, a wellness community 32 miles from her then-home in Atlanta, it was a transformative experience. “We had a pony party at the gorgeous stables which were designed by architect Peter Block and it was this magical day,” she recalls. “We thought, ‘Maybe we should just stop at the real estate office while we’re here…’ They pointed out a house, we bought it and basically never left!”

LUXESOURCE.COM

Founded in 2005, Serenbe is tailormade to help residents live their best lives. It’s outfitted with a new 3,000-squarefoot spa, yoga studio, swim club, artist in residence program, lush hiking trails and many more wellness-geared elements that make it idyllic to say the least. And, it’s gaining traction: The community had around 100 residents when Olsen purchased her home in 2009, and boasts 1,000 today. All properties there—including townhouses, cottages and estates, most of which look more like

they’re in Scandinavia than Georgia— are EarthCraft certified. (Translation: they’re energy and water efficient, saving 30 percent of the energy costs of a typical home.) And Serenbe is not the only Southern community that epitomizes the notion that health is wealth. “Agrihood”—planned developments that mingle sustainablybuilt real estate and farm-to-your-owntable amenities—is booming. Community & Farm sits perched along the French Broad River and features a four-acre organic farm. Every home here is required to use a geothermal heating and cooling system, which comes with a hidden perk in the sweltering Southern summers: no HVAC noise buzzing. Broker and owner Allison Smith notes, “Pandemic migration has taken property sales through the roof as major lifestyle changes allow people to now work from anywhere.” Meanwhile, at Tennessee’s 5,200-acre hotel and residence Blackberry Mountain, sister property to the iconic Blackberry Farm, the lucky few private homeowners

on premises have access to wellness offerings that range from sound bathing to an aerial yoga platform. And yes—the untrammeled wilderness is a huge part of the allure too. Only 20 miles from Charleston is the new Kiawah River, where half of the 2,000-acre waterfront community will remain entirely wild and untouched. Protecting the natural world here is vitally important to this agrihood, which includes The Goatery—a farm dedicated

to artisanal goat milk products—beehives and pasture-raised cattle as well as myriad farms for produce. Residents can also enjoy maritime forest trails where everything from bald eagle pairings to migrating monarch butterflies are frequently spotted. “We love the community and people,” Kiawah River homeowner Megan Hendricks says. “But most of all, we love the wildlife we get to see every day while walking on the paths by the river.”

ARCHITECT THOMAS KLIGERMAN REFLECTS ON THE ENDURING APPEAL OF AN INNATELY AMERICAN VERNACULAR. A S T O L D T O G R AC E B E U L E Y H U N T

When I close my eyes and imagine a house, I picture the sounds it makes: footsteps on the staircase, slamming screen doors, faint voices from downstairs while falling asleep. If someone asked me where I’d choose to live out my days, I’d say a Shingle style home because they reverberate like a drum. My connection to buildings has always been visceral. By the time I left for college, I had lived in 10 houses— saltboxes up and down Connecticut; apartments in New York, London and Paris; an adobe in New Mexico. My father’s work moved us often, but summers were always for sailing in Rhode Island, which is where my love for shingled homes cemented. Shingle style architecture emerged in Newport in 1876, combining the simple forms of early Colonial buildings with the quirks of Victorian Stick style. The 1880s were fascinating years—everything was brave and new. During this time, rooms grew from small, symmetrical boxes into episodic progressions with

abstract shapes and enormous doors that opened onto terraces. These homes weren’t trying to be Italianate villas or French chateaus. Here was an American style. I’m grouped with classical architects, but I’m a closet modernist who is always pushing to see how modern traditional homes can become—yet I never want to lose sight of what people love about them. Shingles are a medium that encourages daring design because they’re so lightweight. You can have soaring cantilevers and chimneys that look like great blades dropped from the heavens. With shingles, you can make a home look like the sail of a boat filled with air. Have you ever sat on the porch of a shingled house in the rain? There’s this wonderful, cozy scent from the cedar that brings comfort like a favorite sweater. That’s the thing; no matter who you are, whether you live in Santa Fe or Seal Harbor, the draw of home is strong for Americans. And Shingle style buildings don’t look like houses, they look—and feel—like homes.

Touch of Whimsy

Parisian designer Vincent Darré’s fantastical collection with OKA includes the Spiral Lamp & Shade, XIV Mirror, Gemini Vase and Lyric Console Table.

LUXESOURCE.COM

As British retailer OKA expands its horizons stateside—it arrived in Dallas last November and will open in Westport, Connecticut, in September—a new collection with French designer Vincent Darré is next on the agenda. Darré, a former fashion heavyweight, captured the imagination of Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA, with his Cocteau-esque interiors. “Seeing Vincent’s work in the flesh excited me about the prospect of a collaboration,” recalls Jones after an early visit to Darré’s Paris atelier. “Everything he touches has a sense of drama to it.” For the duo’s tightly edited four-piece collection, Darré channeled OKA’s aristocratic-meets-bohemian style—a look that reminds him of photographer Cecil Beaton’s work—while also referencing the Neoclassical era and romantic 18th-century gardens. The result? Furnishings that work just as well in a group as they do individually. Included are a marble-topped console supported by ancient ruin-inspired legs, a column-like floor lamp (its spiral shade reminds Jones of a Philip Treacy hat), a black-and-white Grecian face vase and a mirror embellished with musical instruments and starfish. The playful collaboration allowed Jones and Darré to have a little fun while still championing true craftsmanship and creative ingenuity. oka.com

Lasting Lineage Sara Hayat Design

Design is in Sara Hayat’s DNA. Since the 1870s, her family’s company M. Hayat & Bros. has produced luxury furnishings for everyone from royal households to prominent clients, including John F. Kennedy and his famous White House rocker. So, it comes as no surprise that the need to be creative eventually struck. Setting aside a career in finance, Colorado-based Hayat set her sights on made-to-order furniture with a debut collection comprising coffee, writing and dining tables, chairs and sofas, and inventive modular seating. Each of the designer’s pieces, which have their genesis in detailed drawings, are handbuilt by her family’s longstanding artisans in Peshawar, Pakistan. While her materials lean traditional (mahogany, marble, cane, brass inlay, leather and velvet), her forms (geometric, floral, stacked and beveled) are anything but ordinary. Hayat studied joinery and detailing techniques by researching her

family’s archival catalogues in addition to referencing some of the world’s greats— Oscar Niemeyer and Pierre Paulin for further inspiration. She also became fascinated with contemporary automobile and fashion styles, making note of what she loved and which aesthetics she responded to emotionally. “Intentional design has the ability to uplift, and I want my furniture to do just that.” And her Tetris-inspired modular sofa provides a plum example. “People should be creative in how they use it,” Hayat explains, noting that the piece can morph from a sleek living room sofa into a fantastical object for play when deconstructed. “These pieces should dazzle, anchor us in the moment and remind us of what we can be.” As the newly minted furniture designer begins using her own pieces at home, she can’t help but reflect on what her parents instilled in her growing up. “My mother always believed that you should surround yourself with items that make you happy.” A legacy Hayat will surely continue to uphold. sara-hayat.com

Feeling Blue

Delft by Plain English is a five-piece tile collection featuring designs inspired by antique tiles that decorate the founder’s own home. Children Playing I (background) and Sea Creatures (inset).

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sometimes inspiration is right under one’s nose. Or in the case of Tony Niblock, co-founder of kitchen manufacturer Plain English, it was right over his Aga range, where an assortment of antique Delft tiles is proudly displayed. Niblock first started collecting the blueand-white squares after spotting them at a historic house in Yoxford, England, in the 1990s. Now, that passion has grown beyond adorning his own home and evolved into the company’s latest offering, Delft by Plain English—a collection of handmade, hand-painted tiles inspired by his findings. “There’s a freshness about the color combination, isn’t there?” posits co-founder Katie Fontana. “And it’s so wonderful that there’s been a renewed interest and understanding around Delft tiles.” The tin-glazed earthenware tiles have been synonymous with the Netherlands since the 17th century when, impervious to heat or water, they became a functional— and charming—wall decoration for homes, public buildings and palaces across Europe. Plain English’s interpretation features figurative depictions of daily life, like children skipping, as well as fantastical scenes including a mermaid admiring her reflection—all in keeping with eclectic British style that is now back in vogue. “There is a naivete about them that people find appealing,” remarks Niblock. plainenglishdesign.co.uk

Synonymous with all things high-fashion, Valentino’s Anatomy of Couture show beautifully challenged the industry’s status quo. Under Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision, diverse and dramatic silhouettes graced models of all sizes, ages and backgrounds. One particularly au courant look: a head-to-toe periwinkle ensemble that straddles the line between minimalism and maximalism, while remaining “soft and welcoming in the democratic spirit,” notes Piccioli. valentino.com.

STAYING POWER

After 16 years, designer Dana Wolter knew it was time to upgrade her Birmingham, Alabama, kitchen. She soon whipped up a pretty, elegant and detail-filled scheme, but above all else, the space needed to stand the test of time. “I like to think of this room as timeless—a kitchen that will age well and get better the more you use it,” Wolter explains. To bring her well-aging vision to life, she opted for eternally exquisite materials like

LUXESOURCE.COM

Calacatta gold marble countertops and unlacquered brass fittings, all of which patina with use and become more beautiful. Wolter also gave careful consideration to several special details, including delicate fluted cabinetry, a hidden marble spice rack above the range and a functional trough sink carved directly into the island. As Wolter learned first-hand, renovating your own space certainly comes with its perks. The designer tweaked and customized every element to align with how she wanted the space to function. One especially lovely area came about from moving walls around: A graceful display niche that houses silver and crystal tableware frequently used for meals.

Here, delicate curved stone motifs on the shelves echo detailing on the center island to tie the areas together. In contrast to the light, airy kitchen, Wolter had a bit more fun in the pantry, where a moody palette and graphic marble slab surfaces add a touch of drama. “My intention with the pantry was to repeat some of the finishes and treatments in the kitchen, and to make the rooms flow,” the designer explains. “But at the same time, I wanted the pantry to be a little bolder.” Ample storage, refrigerator drawers, and a second dishwasher allow the space to function as a workhorse and keep messes out of sight. A successful passion project, indeed! danawolterinteriors.com

TROPICAL SWING

Interior designer Margaret Kaywell’s client sought an office space of a different color. Namely, one that would inspire future ventures, and host friends and associates for work and play alike. He found his answer in a run-down bungalow in West Palm Beach, which Kaywell—in collaboration with MP Design & Architecture and Tim Givens Building & Remodeling—imagined as a sumptuous private clubhouse. Reworking the layout from the studs, Kaywell conceived a gracious foyer with velvet banquettes flanked by a conference-meets-dining room on one side, and a billiards room on the other. The floor plan also includes a private office, powder

FULL HOUSE

Designer Nina Magon faced a unique brief when it came to the media room of a young Houston-based family. “The husband is a serious cards player and wanted a designated place to call his poker room. His wife said, ‘Okay fine, but you need to share it with me and your child!’” So spurred plans for a space that bridges the divide between moody man cave, elegant lounge and kid-friendly play space. “It’s a universally fun room; it works for everything,” notes Magon, pointing to the custom six seat table (the exact headcount for poker night) and adjacent TV area with its wipeable ottoman that rolls away to accommodate a playmat. But the real hero of the space is the custom cabinetry, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Seaworthy, which chicly stashes vestiges of life with a toddler, or a gamesman, as the case may be. ninamagon.com

LAST HURRAH

A family’s early 1800s farmhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, was a ground-up project—of sorts. Over the course of six years, and led by designer Susan Bednar Long, renovations were tackled phase-by-phase. By the time they set their sights on the unfinished attic, both designer and client had developed a keen sense of what was still missing—a workhorse. On the wish list: A well-appointed office, a gentleman’s lounge for cigar smoking and game nights, a sleep loft for family visits and a bevy of storage. While embracing the original beams and warm wood floors, Long set about modernizing the space with a cozy, masculine mood. Notably, in building out the crooked chimney, she created a stylish built-in

bar-meets-shelving unit wrapped in metallic Hermès wallpaper, which ingeniously serves as a partition between the lounge and office areas. Utilizing every solitary inch (while preserving an airy feel thanks to precisely scaled furnishings), the designer squeezed in a comfy window banquette, an 11-foot-long desk, a flatscreen TV and a sectional. Storage space abounds as well, including the antique home’s original, rehabilitated cubbies that now enclose back-of-house office supplies, camping gear and seasonal storage. “Only the pretty stuff is on view,” notes Long, adding, in the ultimate stamp of approval, “This was never an essential space, but it has become just that.” sblonginteriors.com

BRIGHT IDEA A stone that Primestones finds increasingly popular is quartzite, thanks to the vibrant and exotic hues trending in the design world. Available in a variety of colors, quartzite can complement any palette. Another coveted quality of quartzite is that some varieties have translucent areas that when backlit can really create drama in a space. Cristallo quartzite can be used this way for walls, bars and even bathroom sinks in order to add that extra wow factor.

WARMING TREND The company has observed a significant increase in the use of natural stone for fireplaces in Floridian living rooms, dens and even bedrooms. As a design element and focal point, a well-conceived stone fireplace can add an incredibly luxurious feel and appealing ambience to a home.

When renovating, an effective way to revive the look of a home is by changing the stone. A family-owned company offering one of the largest selections of premier natural stone in Florida, Primestones is committed to helping clients find the crown jewel for their project. The highest quality natural and engineered stone slabs can be found at any of the company’s three locations in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach. The firm works with homeowners and professionals, who utilize the various color palettes and patterns in their inventory in inspiring ways. Custom orders are an option as well. nterior designer Bea Pila and her husband, architect and general contractor Carlos Gonzalez-Ochoa, were facing a problem common to many empty nesters: “I still loved my house,” she says of the residence where the two raised their family. “But I had what I call neglected and abandoned rooms that used to belong to my children. There was also a living room and a dining room I had to force myself to use.” For the interior designer, the issue was especially acute: Several years ago, she wrote a book called Sacred Spaces for Inspired Living, in which she provides seven steps for aligning “your interior with your interiors,” as she puts it. Basically, Pila had seen too many people fail to do the soul-searching necessary to create a truly personalized and functional residence—one that supports the owners’ actual lifestyle. But here she was, living in an environment that didn’t agree with her authentic self and the couple’s day-today reality. “I felt out of alignment with my own philosophy,” the interior designer says. For years, the pair had been watching an empty lot on their beloved street pop on and off the market. So when the property last became available, they took the opportunity to acquire it and construct what Pila calls “the first Design Enlightenment home.” She elaborates: “It means that your house rises up to meet your needs—and not any superfluous or pretentious demands from outside influences.” Using the interior designer’s own enlightenment process, the two explored in-depth how they truly live and then planned the structure, which Gonzalez-Ochoa drew and built. For instance, instead of a formal dining room, they incorporated a dining area into a “great lounge room,” as Pila calls it, which also functions as the primary gathering space. “I want people to come and sit at the integrated bar and lounge in my living room, like I do in the cool hotels I love,” she explains. A pair of dining tables expand to seat 16 people, and when the interior designer opens the nearby sliding doors, she can easily accommodate 30 guests without breaking a sweat. With the salvaged square footage, the couple also prioritized office space for each of

them, a large design workshop and a Zen garden and meditation area. This last element points to one of the pair’s driving forces as they determined the residence’s aesthetic: a relationship to nature. Expanses of glass, both doors and windows, provide a visual and physical connection to the lush lot (Pila designed the landscape herself ). Light infiltrates every space, including through an atrium in the heart of the house and clerestory windows in the kitchen and the workshop. What’s more, the interior designer integrated three water features on the property: an indoor fountain near the entry, an element in the Zen garden and a trio of waterspouts in the pool, all of which combine forces to infuse the home with the sound of bubbling water. Other decisions about the structure’s style grew from the couple’s love for midcentury modern design, especially as it developed around Napa, California, where they had seen architecture that interpreted the warm materials they desired in a contemporary way. “I’m not a cold modernist,” Pila says. “I cannot live in a white house. It makes me nervous.” So, she infused the spaces with color and personality. The kitchen’s sleek cabinetry of mixed materials, for example, blends with a stateof-the-art gas range and an exposed red flue. “It’s the closest I’ll have to a fireplace in Miami,” the interior designer laughs, “and the red represents the heat, the fire, the hearth, the heart.” Terrazzo floors extend through most of the rooms, which are filled with furnishings that meet her standard for comfort and connection. “Furniture is the architecture of behavior,” Pila observes. “The way we place our furniture teaches us how to behave in a space.” That’s why, in the great lounge room, she skipped a sofa and opted instead for smaller seats— including swivel chairs for easy rotation toward the bar—that help foster conversation and gathering. Ultimately, the house is a testament to Pila’s philosophy and the Design Enlightenment process she has developed. “I wrote the book because I felt residential interiors are still answering to a past that no longer serves us today,” Pila says. “I ask my clients right off the bat, ‘How do you want to feel in your home?’ Carlos and I wanted to feel tranquil, and now we do.”

Natural Connection Discovering beauty in the old, a multimedia artist creates assemblages that offer themes of unity. W R I T T E N BY TA N YA WA R D G O O D M A N | P H O T O G R A P H Y BY S O N YA R E V E L L

or many artists, the spark of creativity begins with a clean slate: a blank canvas, new brushes, a freshly opened can of paint. Karla Kantorovich, however, finds inspiration in the discarded and the decayed. “I’m very attracted to that moment of fragility when objects are approaching nothingness,” the artist explains. Viewing these scraps as pieces in a collective puzzle, the Mexico City native combines items such as fabrics and pages torn from old books to create a new vision of wholeness. Her wall-sized pieces incorporate items as disparate as a frayed hammock, tree branches, textiles and yarn, while more intimate assemblages are composed of layered handmade paper, brittle leaves and fragments of canvas ripped from the artist’s own paintings.

Working out of a sun-drenched Aventura apartment-turned-studio, Kantorovich arranges and rearranges her found materials in a meditative ritual of reparation. To her, this practice underscores a broader perspective on human relationships and the cycle of life—and the attempts to restore both. “We are supposed to be connected,” the Miami artist muses. “It’s part of our nature to try to heal or complete that brokenness.” Natural elements, particularly trees, are a dominating force in her work. Using repurposed shirts, Kantorovich distresses each item by applying pigments in an arboreal palette of ochre, birch and muted moss. “Everything comes back to the tree, to the bark,” she says. “I’m obsessed.” The artist’s most recent creations involve mixing scraps of recycled paper and water in a household blender to craft a renewed version of paper, which is texturized and treated until it resembles bark. It is then

sewn together as a nod to regeneration: the cycle of existence and the inevitable return to the earth. “The thread is like the consciousness that connects us,” she reflects. “It’s a bond for life.” The recipient of an Ellies award from Oolite Arts, Kantorovich is preparing an installation that will offer reflections on healing as individuals and as communities. Drawing upon the technique of Mexican amate, a type of bark paper, she is creating her own interpretation of handmade paper using recycled materials and will include a video and audio component for an immersive experience. “Each country has different techniques around paper,” the artist says, citing a desire to understand the artistry of Korean joomchi, a method that involves manipulating hanji paper so it becomes as durable as cloth. “A part of healing is connecting to wisdom. From our ancestors and other people, we are always learning.”

Interior Design: Monica Santayana and Ronald Alvarez, Moniomi Design

Designers Monica Santayana and Ronald Alvarez arranged Gloster’s Dune chaise and Ambient floor lamp along with West Elm side tables on the balcony of a South Florida condo. “We wanted the outdoor space to be fluid with the interior decor, so the colors and fabrics are similar,” Santayana says. “We chose pieces that look residential.”

mid sleek high-rises, ocean vistas and white sandy shores, it was only natural a family envisioned a modern coastal look for their South Florida condo. The new-construction unit would serve as their summer getaway, and they turned to designers Monica Santayana and Ronald Alvarez to outfit the space. When the duo set foot in the residence, however, they couldn’t help but notice subtle opportunities to increase circulation and efficiency. “Our task was to furnish the home and finish tidying up a few things, like lighting selections,” Alvarez says. “But once we got in there, we decided to introduce some changes to the interior architecture.” From the outset, it was impossible to ignore the layout’s sharp angles, which weren’t conducive for a couple with two young children. Santayana and Alvarez, who worked with the firm’s designers Sentrell Marsh, Filip Berdek and Gary Kritzer, knew rounding features where possible would create a softer and more open feel. “We curved the walls and the ceilings and added cove lighting,” Santayana notes, pointing to the smoothed corners in the living and dining areas. “It was a minimal change, but the effect was drastic.” More dramatic transformations took place in the kitchen, where the team installed a mirrored backsplash and removed a floating hood to open the area and enhance the view of Sunny Isles Beach. “Once that disappeared,” Santayana says, “we created a dynamic new form for the island.” They swapped the rectangular original for a larger, more organically shaped version that accommodates seating for five. “It’s a beautiful feature that takes dead space and makes it useful,” Santayana says. “In a small unit, you don’t have the luxury to add pieces of furniture like a buffet, so the island now supports all functions of the room.” With the adjusted framework set, the designers could then tackle the condo’s furnishings and finishes. The clients desired a tropical style, to differ from their New York residence, yet the team stayed away from anything too literal. Instead, “we used textures to support that modern Miami look,”

Santayana explains. “It’s elevated without being obvious.” Coastal-inspired materials show up in contemporary pieces such as the kitchen’s rattanwrapped counter stools and the balcony’s woven floor lamp and teak-framed sofa. Wallcoverings, too, add to the effect: The gray-toned lines in the living area echo the ocean on a cloudy day, and the painterly look of the primary bedroom’s headboard wall mimics a sunset. The powder room is the only space where island style is onthe-nose, with a lush palm tree scene that adds oomph. The overall color palette, however, stays away from ocean tones, instead embracing a cozy range of warm whites and pastel pinks, with only the occasional blue. In a similar vein, rounded silhouettes nod to an endemic quality while responding to the home’s reimagined form. “We used a lot of soft shapes, like curved sofas,” Alvarez notes. “It’s indicative of Art Deco.” The living area’s sectional complements a nearby curved corner and joins accent chairs in a similar shape around a circular coffee table. Half-moon hardware decorates the powder room cabinetry, and cylindrical end tables abound. Even rectangular forms, like the primary bedroom’s nightstands and console table, have rounded edges. For a dose of glam, the designers selected statement lighting for every space. “Each fixture feels unique to its room,” Alvarez says, “but they all work well together.” The rod-like brass piece over the kitchen island, for instance, has a counterpoint fixture featuring a looping cord in the dining area. Yet the most attention-grabbing is the floor lamp of round gold pendants the team chose to elevate a living area corner. “The space needed a vertical, sculptural moment,” Santayana observes. “The way we curved the walls called for something, and this is a fun, funky piece that also creates a beautiful glow at night.” The project’s dreamy end result proved even more beautiful than the owners envisioned— so much so, they are embarking on their next endeavor with the designers. “They were so happy with the outcome of this unit,” Alvarez says, “they now want us to make their home in New York feel just as comfortable.”

ometimes, it takes a professional’s eye to see a home’s potential. Such was the case for one couple who purchased a 1970s dwelling that hadn’t been updated in decades. Upon observing the expansive grounds and promising footprint, a team of experts helped their clients look past the jumbled floor plan, Mexican tile and dated finishes to visualize what the property could be: a bright, coastal-inspired sanctuary. “We saw great spaces and bones,” says interior designer Ellen Kavanaugh. “We gave the couple the confidence that we could make this house really wonderful.” Such a transformation required a major renovation. Residential designers Daniel Ménard and Yianni Varnava partnered with general contractor Chip Valle for the job, with Michael J. Johnson serving as architect of record. They knew the structure’s low ceilings and enclosed areas were a main source of the home’s dark interiors, so they forged a plan to refine the layout in a way that would enlarge spaces and introduce more natural light. “The original house had a lot of hallways and small rooms,” Varnava recalls. “We consolidated areas to have better flow and more openness throughout.” The team also raised ceilings wherever possible, including in the reconfigured family room, and crafted several with tray, barrel and groin vaults for a captivating touch. “It was basically like building a new house,” Valle says of the remodel. Although much of the work promoted the concept of opening up the structure, there was one space where the opposite occurred. At the front exterior, the team enclosed a portion of the long outdoor courtyard to form a proper foyer with archways leading to the great room. “The entry allows you to access different parts of the house without having to go through the main living area,” Ménard explains. Knowing this scene would set the tone for the rest of the home, and desiring a lighthearted, fresh take on traditional Palm Beach style, Kavanaugh selected striking glazed teal terra-cotta tile flooring and commissioned an airy, modern

tropical mural on the walls. “We knew right off the bat we wanted this mural,” she says, “so we designed the space to enhance it.” Beyond the foyer, crisp white walls and pale oak floors offered a clean backdrop for the interior designer to make daring color choices in unexpected places—such as the great room’s sky blue ceiling. A nod to the pool beyond, it is coated with a highly buffed Venetian plaster, creating a luminous quality to reflect light. “I find it’s interesting to take a bold risk with a few finishes,” Kavanaugh notes. To keep the large-scale space—split into dining and living areas—physically and visually uncluttered, the interior designer incorporated pieces such as white upholstered furnishings, a Lucite coffee table and natural textures, including a long wood dining table capped by rattan peacock chairs. Oceanic blues and leafy green tones add doses of color on pillows, artwork and accent chairs, underscoring a tropical feel. Meanwhile, most of the private spaces take a quieter turn. The primary bedroom, for instance, features a palette of soft blues and creams, complementing the tray ceiling’s limewashed cypress. “Anytime you add natural wood to a ceiling, it makes the space feel like it has a soul,” Kavanaugh says. “It brings so much life.” New French doors also introduce light into the primary bedroom and offer views of the backyard, where landscape designer Todd MacLean adopted the interior’s color scheme. “There are hints of blues and greens we wanted to bring from the inside out,” he says, pointing to the Alexander palms and green island ficus near the pool. He also installed bougainvillea along the columns of the loggia, which Kavanaugh transformed into a flexible alfresco gathering space using natural materials and color accents similar to the interior tones. Radiant and welcoming, the house is a testament to how anything is possible with a stellar renovation, the interior designer says. “This project is a perfect example of clients going out of their comfort zone and giving us the freedom to make bold choices they absolutely love,” she reflects. “They’re thrilled with their new home and wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Together, Lynda Smith, her daughter Ariel Smith-Hortman and Elisa Sugherelli are LSA group. With One Sotheby’s International Realty, they work to deliver unmatched service in the South Florida ultraluxury real estate market.

First and foremost, the team wakes up with gratitude. They think about three things they’re grateful for and why. “Secondly, we write out our goals for the week. Then the day can begin. We’ll be connecting with our clients, finding new inventory or developments in our area and time-blocking appointments. However, the most important piece of each day is feeling grateful. The team adds: “Many times you need to figure out the deeper reason for someone needing to sell or buy. Only once you understand the ‘why’ can you exceed your client’s expectations and have a long-lasting relationship.”

Contributing valuable resources ranging from maintenance and repair vendors to home managers and movers, they guide clients through smooth journeys to their new homes. Often, the team has paired clients with builders to see ideas come to life. Asked what is to come, Smith points to embracing a new concept of luxury. “We want to go beyond the standard real estate market role to provide another level of white-glove service.” Alongside this vision for her firm’s future, she has one for her industry. “We would love to see more women join and succeed in this field. If I could offer any advice to those starting out in real estate, I would remind them that it is hard work, but if you stay with it, persevere and make strong connections, it will be so worth it.”

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE Asked to discuss the unique strengths women bring to design and real estate, Smith dives right in. “Fortunately, our industry is becoming more female-dominated because, simply, we’re really great at it! Women are relationship specialists and networking professionals. We cultivate connections with purpose that are genuine and meaningful.”
