CONTESSA MIAMI

Major Food Group continues to dominate the evolving food scene in South Florida, opening another design-forward restaurant, Contessa Miami, in the Miami Design District. Discover two floors of statementmaking details at the Northern Italian restaurant—with an original location in Boston—conceived by creative director Ken Fulk. Italy’s oldworld sophistication and Miami glamour intermingle at every turn on the first floor, including walls and ceilings dripping in pink Venetian plaster, dangling Murano light fixtures, high-gloss teak woodwork that recalls a Riva boat and a jewel-toned marble floor in a striking Art Deco pattern. “Contessa Miami transports guests to Italy’s Lake Como while being firmly rooted in the high fashion of the Miami Design District,” Fulk says. “Grand gestures abound, from emerald drapery to one of the country’s most gorgeous staircases.” These dramatic steps guide guests past oil paintings, historic photographs and gilded mirrors, making way to the second floor through a scrolled opening inspired by a historic lakeside villa. The dining room’s wall paneling is swathed in a deep teal that contrasts the smoked-oak herringbone-patterned flooring, while a symphony of silk pendant lights hovers above scalloped booths edged with Italian terra-cotta planters filled with lush greenery for an oh-so-Florida feel. contessaristorante.com/miami

AQUA VIVA

DIPLOMAT BEACH RESORT

No matter where you are in South Florida, a swimming pool is never far from view. Indeed, poolscapes as striking architectural statements have been integral to the region’s nostalgia and allure since the 1950s. From Miami Beach’s theatrical and glamorous Fontainebleau and Eden Roc pool designs by architect Morris Lapidus, to real estate developer George Merrick’s vision for the grand 820,000-gallon Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, water has played a powerful role in creating the famed environment. The iconic Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, originally built in the 1950s, with a subsequent full renovation by Hirsch Bedner Associates as part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, pays homage to its storied past but with a modern take on design. Its swanky two-story poolscape is a chic playground unto itself, with an infinity pool featuring a glass porthole bottom and two waterfalls that cascade into the 240-foot lagoon pool below. This is water recreation that’s impossible to resist and a reflection of the lightness of the landscape. diplomatresort.com

SHELF LIFE

PALM BEACH LIVING

The latest coffee table book written by Palm Beach native Jennifer Ash Rudick and photographed by Nick Mele, Palm Beach Living, delves into the stories and insights behind the area’s distinctly designed residences and gardens. Below, Rudick reveals book details that will leave readers with home envy. vendomepress.com

The inspiration. An intuitive desire to understand the way people live has always been behind my interest in homes. If a house is a portrait that provides insights into the tastes, penchants and idiosyncrasies of its inhabitants, then a collection of houses speaks to the social patterns of a town. Palm Beach residences create a narrative of a slightly eccentric and unfailingly philanthropic population influenced by the natural beauty of the subtropical surroundings.

Book surprises. Palm Beach isn’t all estates filled with gilded furniture, and the book reflects the varied ways of life, including not only mansions and landmarked homes but also apartments, cottages and new builds. There is a 4,000-acre working ranch west of town that’s thick with gnarled live oaks, cabbage palms and cypresses, and it’s a delightfully individualistic take on country life and a satisfying contrast to the couple’s more formal home in Palm Beach.

Importance of tapping photographer Nick Mele. Nick deserves the moniker “a modern-day Slim Aarons” for his breathtaking portraits, and the book’s photographs demonstrate his innate understanding of interiors and distinct eye for composition and detail.

POST MASTER

@STUDIO_SEIKALY

WHO: Tatiana Seikaly is a French Lebanese interior designer who founded Studio Seikaly, a Miami-based design studio. She finds inspiration in traveling to Europe and the Middle East, where her love for interiors began.

WHAT: Discover how Seikaly transforms spaces into unique sanctuaries with pieces that are sourced for longevity. Scroll to spot details from her projects as well as design inspo sprinkled throughout that is sure to spark creativity.

WHY: Interiors should evoke emotion, and that’s exactly what Seikaly strives to do with every project by injecting a sense of international influence.

IN HER WORDS: “Growing up, I spent my summers visiting family members abroad and was fascinated by the way people lived in different parts of the world. Each home was so unique yet could still stir similar emotions. My goal is to create memorable and unexpected spaces you always want to come home to.”

THE POWER OF TWO ARTISTORIC

Art, history and exquisite beauty collide in a unique way at Artistoric. Founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife duo Bailey Tichenor and Michael Assis, the wellcurated online gallery offers historical decorative arts that appeal to a new generation. Using a research-based approach similar to a museum, the Miami couple acquires pieces that are aesthetically impactful and have historical meaning—in particular pre-1900s ceramics—and recently expanded their offerings to include fine art and furnishings. The result is a gallery ripe with themes and complementary objects that reveal their relationship to one another and place in history. “We try not to limit our gallery’s scope, looking for anything we find interesting and that others might, too,” Tichenor says. “This approach has enabled us to acquire some really wonderful things and uncover fascinating stories.” artistoric.com

The location flaunts samples of her bespoke rug collection as well as collaborations with fellow innovators Jenna Krypell, Lauren Williams, Hinojosa Design Studio and more while doubling as a creative and event space. In Coral Gables, the new sprawling Kartell flagship store touts a myriad of indoor and outdoor furnishings that includes the brand’s most-loved pieces as well as new collections. One of the debut standouts: HiRay by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba’s outdoor collection of chairs, tables and couches (above), which offer a light, transparent feel and look. Lastly, European Flooring has opened a new location on West Palm Beach’s Antique Row. Designed like an art gallery, the space boasts an extensive offering of Legno Bastone hardwood flooring, crafted with a marine-grade core and a durable protective finish.

CASA BRANCA

Interior designer Alessandra Branca has injected new energy into her Worth Avenue showroom, Casa Branca, in Palm Beach. Showcasing recently launched collections as well as a sneak peek at makers to come, the reinvigorated space draws clients into a world of whimsy with cheerful colorways, rich textures and a fresh taste of spring. Read on as Luxe sits down with Branca to discuss her inspiration and what’s next. casabranca.com

What sparked the redesign? I love thinking of the store as this everchanging environment that reflects new ways to see Casa Branca as well as Palm Beach interiors. As always, there is a mix of patterns and textures and a play on vintage. The sky-blue Casa Branca Madagascar wallpaper, new to our collection, feels fresh. It plays against the green in our Audrey linen print and the new Palampore fabric in Coral and Stone. We were able to show different styles, blending updated furnishings, Casa Branca custom upholstery with wonderful 18 th -century Italian chairs and gorgeous vintage rattan pieces. The space represents my only rules for interiors: Mix it up!

Any standouts in the new spring collection? This collection is anchored on one end by joyful, sophisticated prints with an updated, classic appeal and on the other end by textured woven fabrics and wallpapers in rich colors that anchor a space. The prints are based on my love of classical concepts, such as the Tree of Life pattern in Audrey, and wonderful antique Palampores, which I collect. Spring green, sky blue, coral—they all live in harmony as they do in nature. What can we expect from you this year? Lots of design work as well as a wonderful event and collaboration with amazing vendors this spring at Round Top. Casa Branca has many upcoming launches, including the spring textile collection, collaborations across categories and a major expansion of our Palm Beach footprint and concept.

There's a word for the way an expanse of doors blends the indoors and outdoors into one space. It's called biophilic design. But whatever you choose to call it, the effect is the same – your favorite spaces become better, sunnier, and filled with fresh air as they're transformed into a paradise of nature. Another defining element of doors made with rich wood interiors, aluminum clad exteriors, and no compromises.

Grounds for Celebration

THE LATEST SCULPTURE GARDENS FEATURE MUSEUM-QUALITY WORKS THAT ENGAGE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT, INVITING WONDER AND INTROSPECTION.

JAMES DOYLE DESIGN ASSOCIATES

It would seem that Mother Nature shouldn’t need much embellishment, but in his new book, Intersection of Nature and Art, landscape architect James Doyle makes a convincing case for using world-class sculpture to enhance outdoor environments. “Once you set the right piece in a meadow, it ends up making sense; the scale is correct, and it adds whimsy and artistry to the natural surroundings,” he says. For art connoisseur clients, outdoor sculpture gardens provide an opportunity to expand their collection and experience pieces while communing with nature. “Some homeowners may want these works front and center, while others will prefer them to be more of a surprise that’s discovered as the landscape gradually unfolds,” says Justin Quinn, partner at JDDA. At a historic estate outside Philadelphia, an Antony Gormley sculpture punctuates the expansive grounds. Whether situated to inspire public awe or private contemplation, an artfully placed sculpture has the power to beguile onlookers. jdda.com

ARTERRA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

While northern California vistas take pride of place in landscape architect Gretchen Whittier’s designs, even the most breathtaking scenery can need a little coaxing. “Sometimes you have to reshape the view, and we often use sculpture to accentuate the end of a vista or create a focal point,” she says. For a Napa Valley project, finding the right location for a monumental tree sculpture by Ai Weiwei required much deliberation. Whittier ultimately landed on the entry courtyard, where it serves as a crowning centerpiece. Placing art en plein air also helps to create a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, visually extending the living area. “When you see a piece of sculpture through a window, and it feels like part of the decor, a beautiful connection is made.” arterrasf.com

MIRADOR GROUP

For architect Jerry Hooker, using sculpture in landscape design isn’t just about creating an aesthetically pleasing composition—it’s an opportunity to craft a personal narrative. A partner with Mirador Group, Hooker has used art to enhance the grounds of many projects, including the private roof terrace of a new condominium in Houston. Hooker created three separate garden “rooms” housing a sculpture that holds special meaning to the homeowner. Providing clients with such thoughtful landscapes encourages the kind of introspection one might experience in museums, a similarity not lost on Hooker. “Every single person will have a different interpretation,” Hook er says. “That’s the purpose of art.” miradorgroup.com

Green Thumb

AVID GARDENER ELLEN ECKER OGDEN REFLECTS ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GREEN HUES AS A WELCOMING OF THE SEASON AHEAD.

It’s a gardener’s spring ritual: waiting and watching for hints of green. Who knew that a color could hold so much promise and ll me with such a sense of hope. Like listening to music wafting through the air, shades of emerald and sage begin to layer through my garden the surrounding Vermont hills. I notice how fresh, minty green buds give to blooming leaves, and celadon spears of asparagus poke through the soil. Emerging plants move to a tempo all their own like a well synchronized orchestra.

Weeks ago, I went through the sacred processes symbolizing spring: cupping a handful of soil and inhaling as I put it to my nose. Healthy and organic, the mixture smelled sweet like chocolate cake and felt rich and crumbly in my palm. Preparing soil was only my rst act before pushing and sowing seeds for peas and lettuce in long, straight rows. Within a week, tiny sprouts have given way to tendrils, then so much more.

garden in a lush valley between the Green Mountains and Taconic Range, where pine, pistachio and jade tones blanket the verdant landscape like a giant tapestry of color coming together to create a rich work of art. As I follow a well-worn path from the woods, freshly punctuated with lime-colored buds peeking through the ground, back to my own garden, I pause. A medley of green hues will soon emerge to mean one thing—spring is here.

Whether soaring 20 feet above a bustling city street or punctuating a serene park, Jorge Blanco’s vibrant, aluminum sculptures are instantly recognizable. The playful silhouettes—depicting everything from human forms in motion to fruit and abstract shapes—are his vehicle for spreading joy. “Art is communication and feeling,” says the Sarasota-based artist, whose practiced sculpture for nearly 50 years. “I always have the same intention in my work: communicate happiness, energy and enthusiasm.”

Blanco’s penchant for art began in his native Venezuela. As a child, he discovered Auguste Herbin’s colorful and geometric paintings, which had a profound impact on

his work. While Blanco’s early sculptures portrayed darker subjects, his artistic language shifted to express a more positive point of view upon meeting his wife, Elena, in 1984. “The world has two sides,” Blanco explains. “One is sad, scary and painful, whereas the other is about beauty, smiling and comfort. I choose to focus on the latter because it is encouraging.”

Bold primary hues or bright white coloring are hallmarks of his work, which include 30 permanent public sculptures, in addition to private commissions, throughout the U.S. and abroad. His pieces directly reflect the inspiration he finds in day-to-day life, whether that be sports or the color of a piece of fruit.

Before embarking on a new sculpture, Blanco closely surveys the site where the work will live, observing shadows cast by the sun, wind conditions, vegetation and surrounding architecture. Each design originates as a humble paper sketch, evolving into a model and then a technical drawing before reaching its final machinecut, powder-coated form. “It’s important to me that people smile when they see my work,” Blanco muses. “It is a gift that encourages me to continue working.”

BETWEEN A THRIVING LANDSCAPE AND EXTERIORS BUSINESS, A DEBUT LINE OF PLANTERS AND A NEW MIAMI OUTPOST, THERE’S NO TIME FOR MOSS TO GROW UNDER ADAM SIRAK’S FEET.

WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

Inspired by the rich history of Istanbul, Orion II and Saturn III are part of Adam Sirak’s new collection of cast concrete planters with The Future Perfect.

“My practice is about telling stories,” Adam Sirak explains. Whether creating the garden at Art House of San Clemente, an artist-in-residency program outside Los Angeles, or a rooftop green oasis in West Hollywood, Sirak takes an uber-creative approach to exterior design. This approach has brought him residential projects throughout L.A., where he lives, and new hospitality work including a forthcoming hotel near Joshua Tree National Park.

His love of gardens was inherited from his parents, both of whom are landscape designers in South Florida. “I grew up in a masterpiece garden, and we were always taking trips to botanical gardens or the Everglades. It was plants, plants, plants,” he says, laughing. Now, Sirak is working with them to establish an office in Miami from which he can operate.

“Gardens are transportive, they’re living expressions of time and place. I find that endlessly inspiring.”

For his latest venture, a line of planters, the designer was inspired by an interest in classical antiquities and ancient civilizations. “I’ve used every planter under the sun and thought, where’s the one that’s really cool?” Sirak let ideas develop organically, sketching hundreds of prototypes by hand. Soon a collection developed; the drawings digitized, the molds made, and casting done at his California facility.

The made-to-order planters caught the eye of David Alhadeff, founder of The Future Perfect, who now carries the line, which takes cues from the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman empires of Istanbul’s history. At once ancient and modern, the designs can tell any story one might imagine. sirak.com

“I think of front yards as portals: They should welcome you into the garden and set the tone,” Sirak explains of this West Hollywood project. Although short on space, the fountain acts as a centerpiece while the sound of bubbling water adds a serene note.

BLOSSOMING BEAUTY

Textile artist Maggie Dillon specializes in portraiture, and while her color palette is usually more subdued, the saturated hues and bold prints of Sunbrella’s new Perspectives collection led her to compose the stunning portrait, You Belong Among the Wildflowers

“I seek a feeling of calm in my work, and the title felt like a deep breath of fresh air,” says the

Sarasota resident. The collection’s orangey red fabrics inspired the striking scene featuring a woman surrounded by poppies (a fitting choice as the flower blossoms in springtime).

LIGHT TOUCH

Dana De Ano starts each piece with an examination of the materials. “I hear what they have to say,” says the Chicago-based visual artist. “We have a conversation and then I play.” In this case, De Ano listened to the colors and textures of Donghia’s Lake Hill Performance/Outdoor collection. She was particularly drawn to the neutral colors and textural feel of its rich boucle and chenille designs.

For Front Lawn, the artist was inspired by Chicagoan’s determination to regrow their surrounding landscapes after the long winter months. EXTERIOR INSIGHTS

Bryan Echols, senior vice president of sales and marketing, shares the ins and outs of outdoor excellence.

Name some unique places that have included your designs. We’ve seen our furnishings on cruise ships, high-rise condominium balconies, in outdoor seating areas at restaurants and breweries, at landmark locations like New York’s Waldorf Astoria and The Breakers in Palm Beach, in films like The Green Mile, TV series like Revenge, as well as music videos like Kenny Chesney’s Old Blue Chair

How do you include clients in the creative process? We offer Lloyd Loom Lounge Galleries with a dedicated Lloyd specialist to our retail partners to showcase our multitude of design, material and color options. Digitally, clients and salespeople can build their own look online and collaborate with us virtually to achieve a final custom design.

How are you responding to the increased demand for sustainability? We pay careful attention to the availability and sustainability of the materials we use, the energy resources required during the manufacturing process and the impact our products have on the environment.

What’s new and next? While neutrals will always be important aesthetically, we’re seeing significant growth in our brightly-colored finishes and fabrics. Our Sea Glass, Denim Blue and Woodland Green are all extremely popular right now.

Don’t be fooled by its name: Though West Virginia’s New River Gorge was recently added to the National Park Service, the New River is one of the oldest rivers in North America. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, the park covers 70,000 acres of forestland which provides visitors plentiful opportunities for hiking, whitewater rafting and rock climbing. This postcardworthy destination is also home to the New River Gorge Bridge—the third highest in the country. nps.gov/neri

Three Generations of Design

LILLIAN AUGUST DESIGN DEITY CONFESSIONS of a

Some say that three is a magic number. For Lillian August, it certainly is. For more than three decades she has been a leading figure in the world of high-end interior and lifestyle design. With her son and co-founder, Dan Weiss, and now the addition of her granddaughter and marketing director, Eliza Weiss, by her side, August’s world-renowned brand boasts three generations of talent, skill and expertise that continues to bring traditional elegance and innovative ideas to her celebrated lines of fine indoor and outdoor home furnishings, textiles, wallcoverings, lighting, wall décor and rugs. In the following interview, August shares insights into her history, design aesthetic and unique eye for quality, detail and color, as well as the 15-year partnership she shares with Sherrill Furniture– all of which has made both Lillian August the woman and Lillian August the brand truly legendary.

Share a bit of your brand’s history and evolution. I began designing textiles in the 1970s with a line of English country house-inspired quilts and crafts. This allowed me to expand into licensed collections of fabrics, wallcoverings, and later, furniture with outstanding makers like Sherrill Furniture. With my granddaughter joining, we are reaching younger lifestyle customers with fresh designs and creative expressions like our recent outdoor fabric license with Tempo Fabrics and exciting new wallcovering designs with Wallquest.

Describe your aesthetic. Whether it is historic or fresh from the Paris runways, color, patterns and textures have always inspired me.

What are the hallmarks of your brand’s personality? Lillian August is a go-to brand for interior designers wanting to achieve unique lifestyle looks with exceptional quality and classic design.

We work in a wide variety of styles because our customers live in different parts of the country and have different wants, needs, tastes and visions. And the fact that we offer so many fabrics, finishes, colorways and customization options allows our pieces to adapt to any fresh design ideal our clients can dream up.

What is exciting you creatively right now? Our latest designs are leaning into three unique lifestyles. First is Hollywood Regency, which blends maximalist glamour with bold, bright colors and patterns. Next is New Traditional, which will expand into indoor and outdoor textile collections that combine a traditional coastal concept with a fun, youthful twist. Finally, our Vintage Roundtop mixes natural materials and relaxed finishes for a masculine, mountain house feel that represents Dan’s aesthetic point of view.

What constitutes good design? Timelessness, great taste and an original mix of colors, materials and creature comforts.

The Serene Luxury primary bath by designer Mary Maney, CKBD, of Crystal Kitchen + Bath in Crystal, Minnesota, won Best Overall Bath due to an elegant design that overcame myriad structural challenges. Marble is incorporated throughout the bath to add a feeling of luxury, while a rug pattern with a mosaic inlay centered in front of the freestanding tub creates interest. The resulting space, with its minimalistic style and fluid lines, combines a mix of tradition and modernism for a truly compelling bath.

There are many different rooms and moments that make up a home. But it is an undeniable truth that the kitchen and bath are at the center of it all. They bring the function every household must have, but they’ve also become the hub of the home in another way: they often serve as a design foundation, setting the tone for everything else. Each year, the National Kitchen and Bath Association celebrates the very best of these all-important spaces in its Kitchen & Bath Design Competition. The Creek Lane Kitchen by Sarah Robertson, AKBD, founder and principal of Studio Dearborn in Mamaroneck, New York, was designed for privacy, serenity and a connection to nature. It was also a kitchen that had to effectively accommodate the homeowners’ five cats, hence the “must-have” floor drain for the pets’ watering station. The beautiful mix of materials and integrated details combined with the practical storage and functionality of this kitchen made it a clear winner.

THE MARFA, TEXAS, RETREAT OF HOSPITALITY MAVEN LIZ LAMBERT SPEAKS THE LANGUAGE OF PLACE.

“I strongly believe that a home should feel of a place,” Liz Lambert explains of her Marfa, Texas, abode, which is a true reflection of the surrounding area’s distinct culture. For the Austin-based hotelier, who made her mark designing some of the country’s top hospitality destinations, far west Texas inspires everything from materiality and building techniques, to the items she uses for decorating and entertaining.

Lambert’s residence is situated on her family’s sprawling cattle ranch located between

the Chinati and Davis Mountains. When she returned home to Texas after a stint in New York City, Lambert set out to find a home near where she grew up. Fortunately, she didn’t have to search far after realizing an existing bunk house structure on the property could be transformed with a few tweaks. Soon, a screened-in porch and section of the kitchen were built using traditional adobe masonry and outfitted with regionally sourced furniture. “A lot of friends helped me put this house

together,” Lambert explains. “Most of what you see in here is local and really speaks to where we are.”

Whether guests prefer lounging by the water tank or escaping the Texas heat with a dip in the alfresco bathtub, the ranch celebrates life outdoors and the natural beauty found in this corner of the country. When it comes to the interiors, there is an honest purity to the space that allows for an easy, laid-back lifestyle in which friends

come and go with ease. Most meals are served family style by Lambert’s brother, acclaimed chef Lou Lambert, who uses the Wolf Range for pinto beans as much as he does the campfire for grilling dinner.

For the table, Lambert gathers pared down native flora and fauna along with objects collected from the land. Place settings feature beautiful terra-cotta plates and bowls made in neighboring Mexico. “I think simplicity is beautiful,” Lambert notes.“I gravitate towards places where things fall away; the simpler a place is, the more you feel at home.”

One motif the aesthete does collect in abundance, though, is stripes. The classic print was the starting point for her new textile collection, Perennials by Far West, made in collaboration with the performance fabric and rug company. “I’ve had a history with stripes,” Lambert explains. “From using them in projects to collecting hand-woven Peruvian

textiles and Nepalese saddle blankets. So we began by examining each of these patterns.” And what evolved was a colorful, bohemian-inspired line comprising five fabric and three rug designs that work just as well indoors as they do outside.

Lambert, a partner at MML Hospitality, and her team at Lambert McGuire Design, put their heads together with Ann Sutherland at Perennials—bonding over Texas and tequila— to dream up patterns fitting in any number of applications while still evoking the place for which they were inspired: far west Texas. “T he idea was to start with stripes and put together a collection where each pattern could live on its own while also complementing one another,” she says. The line is already right at home on the ranch: Lambert’s used it for upholstering vibrant throw pillows, dog beds and even a camper van. At home indeed. perennialsfabrics.com; farwestcollective.com

THE REPORT
The louvred façade of this South Carolina retreat creates a shaded dining terrace. Designer Elly Poston Cooper lined the pool deck with crisp white chaises to echo the symmetry of the architecture by McAlpine.

DAILY SANCTUARY

Elly Poston Cooper’s clients would have loved a vacation house, but there simply wasn’t time for one. The solution? Transform their South Carolina property into a getaway. “They wanted to create the magic of taking a holiday in their own backyard,” elaborates Poston Cooper, who joined forces with McAlpine on the design of an enchanting pool house boasting a chef’s kitchen, bunk room and lofted lounge. “We wanted it to feel like a destination,” she adds, pointing to kicky flourishes like the rattan drums, shuffleboard table and Peter Dunham Fig Leaf fabric on the lounge chairs and pillows. “It plays off the grounds and feels great for summer, but fresh and funky the rest of the year,” the designer notes. Meanwhile, beanbag chairs in Heather Chadduck’s Little Bamboo print can easily move to the pool deck or lawn, where the thoughtful addition of a white stone wall caters to movie screenings. While the outbuilding has hosted fundraisers, birthday parties, and even a wedding, the everyday delights are what assure Poston Cooper of a mission accomplished. “On Sunday nights, they’ll order pizza to the pool house and have family dinner,” she says. “It’s where they go to unplug.” ellyposton.com

RUSTIC RAUCOUS

“It truly is a catchall,” shares Julie Massucco Kleiner of the souped-up pool house she designed for a sports-loving family of entertainers. Kleiner’s clients sought to create a party HQ on their new San Juan Island, Washington, property, and an existing storage barn at the edge of the forest was just the answer. In collaboration with Studio AM Architecture & Interiors and Wygal Builders, Kleiner revamped the structure from head-to-toe, refinishing the exterior with a dramatic charcoal stain. Inside, the team implemented a world-class entertaining program tailored to large gatherings that includes a full kitchen and bar (replete with beer keg and wine systems), “the world’s largest sectional,” per Kleiner, and rolling pool and ping-pong tables wi th hard-top covers that can easily be pushed together to create a makeshift 60-person dinner table. Carrying the space’s blue-and-white scheme through to the exterior living areas, Kleiner selected an Ann Sacks tile with “a retro, Slim Aarons feel,” to rim the pool, complemented by striped chaises and scalloped umbrellas. From its flexible, fun-first amenities to the preppy palette that nods to the family’s east coast roots, the finished result is “very atypical,” Kleiner admits. Just as intended. massuccowarner.com

GANGS ALL HERE

It’s not often that clients buy a house specifically because its acreage is perfect for erecting the pool house of their dreams. But that’s exactly why a young family purchased their Scarsdale, New York, abode, tasking Alisberg Parker Architects and Lucy Harris Studio with rendering an entertainer’s paradise on its outskirts. “It was our job to design something that belongs with the landscape and aligns with the architecture of the main house,” says principal Ed Parker, who echoed the existing structure’s palette and stonework while spinning things in a decidedly modern, laid-back direction. “It really feels like a retreat—almost like having a weekend home in the backyard,” reflects director of architecture, Shaun Gotterbarn.

“They wanted a place to relax, k ick back with friends and feel like they’re getting away from it all,” adds designer Lucy Harris who, aided by team members Kelley Roach, Jaclyn Doherty and Stephanie Saltzman, channeled the hospitable, hard-living chic of a boutique hotel for the interiors. Custom furnishings in sinuous shapes, natural material details and a fresh palette of blues and neutrals energized with red accents lend an off-duty vibe that’s “still elegant, but less buttoned up,” Harris notes.

While boasting plentiful amenities (including guest quarters and a semisubterranean basketball court), the beating heart is the pool-level lounge with its showstopping wet bar backed in book-matched marble. “It’s a little bit show business and a little bit sculpture,” muses director of interior architectural design, Will Jameson. “We got to play with some fun ideas, like the wooden slats on the front that shimmer as you move like a Bridget Riley painting.” The swank space merges seamlessly to the outdoor living areas, aided by bifold glass doors and garage-style windows. “You can have 30 people over at the drop of a hat with all the different seating areas,” notes Parker—and the clients often do. The husband hosts a basketball league, the wife runs a tennis group, and the kids’ entourage lives in the pool come summer. Concludes Harris, “It really is a playhouse for everyone.” alisbergparker.com; lucyharrisstudio.com

AMERICAN SCREEN SOLUTIONS

In the mission to create indoor-outdoor cohesion, there is perhaps no feature more important than windows, doors and sliding systems. But with these innovations must come high-quality screens. Otherwise, the elements will ruin the enjoyment of one’s open-air oasis. Enter, American Screen Solutions. “Retractable screens not only bring privacy, shade and protection from bugs,” says president Jorge Paulino. “Their ability to disappear also provides homeowners with the perfect transitional element for luxurious spaces where indoors and outdoors blend.” As far as the brand to choose, Paulino and team feel the answer is obvious. “For 30 years, Phantom has been the gold standard,” he says. “We offer their products with excellent service and a limited lifetime warranty, making us unique.” With 10 signature colors, multiple wood-grain options and customization capabilities, the selection stands out too.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

“One unusual but very savvy request is creating a temperature-controlled room with insect protection that opens up to the fresh air of Florida winter, but can also be closed during the hot months of summer,” Paulino says. “To successfully implement this, we install double-roll screens: one motorized retractable screen for insect protection and a clear vinyl that acts as a retractable window wall.”

TWOFOLD BENEFITS

Paulino talks retractable screens.

• Designed to suit: Integrating products with the look of a home is a part of our commitment. Our retractable screen doors fit all door types, including in-swing, single, double and slider.

• Creating sustainability: Motorized screens also limit the exposure to UV rays, with solar mesh options that help control the temperature and reduce energy costs.

JUDITH NORMAN OUTDOOR LIVING

954.925.7200 | jnoutdoorliving.com | jnoutdoorliving

One of the most dramatic disruptions in American life in the last few years has been a shift in how people are living and interacting in their homes. Data showed the number of people working from home tripled in 2021, and the numbers are likely even greater today. In the world of home design, this means that creating a serene and beautiful oasis is frequently on the client request list—and stunning outdoor spaces are a must. David Fine, vice president at Judith Norman Outdoor Living, says, “Clients are aware of the need to spend time outdoors as part of a healthier well-being and improved mental health.” Fine has also noticed the trend towards lush home environments that can serve a dual function as an office when needed. He adds: “Making your outdoor space a comfortable and beautiful oasis inspires people—and clients will find themselves doing a lot more activities and entertaining outside rather than indoors.”

OUTDOOR EXPERTISE

Judith Norman is known for “having a large selection of outdoor product on our showroom floor,” says Judith Norman Outdoor Living manager Lesley Rojas, who describes the company as “a one-stop shop.” The team’s expertise covers many products, including outdoor furniture, rugs, artwork, planters, decorative lighting and landscape lighting. Rojas adds: “With our extensive listings we can source any style and material at multiple price points. We want to offer solutions and make the process easy.”

TRENDS IN DESIGN

As outdoor spaces are now seen as an extension of indoor living, the Judith Norman team has seen a move towards more comfortable products. Rojas says, “The outdoor industry is introducing new materials and designs that focus on comfort. With the outdoor space seen as an expansion of the interiors, homeowners expect the same quality and comfort in their outdoor furniture as they do in the rest of the house.”

KWD LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

True outdoor living allows homeowners to expand their space and integrates natural elements into daily living. As Amy Wieland-Carlson, Managing Principal of KWD Landscape Architecture, notes: “In South Florida, we are able to enjoy year-round access to outdoor spaces—whether it’s enjoying mild winter weather or cooling off in the summer, outdoor living creates additional areas for entertainment or lounging.” Since its inception in 1984, the landscape firm has been designing one-of-a-kind outdoor spaces. “Our company is filled with long-term employees who have been mentored by Founding Principal Krent Wieland, who began working in the field in 1978,” says Amy. “We are a timeless, innovative and proven design firm.” A frequent request is for a serene environment. Amy adds: “Clients want to capture that resort feeling in the privacy of their own homes—spaces to entertain in or simply relax and enjoy.”

BESPOKE BACKYARDS

The KWD Landscape Architecture team works with every client individually to accomplish their goals and surpass expectations. And while every space is unique, there are some repeat requests. “Water and fire features are always popular,” says Amy. Today’s new trends? “Brimming spas and sun shelves are sought after right now,” she says. “Koi ponds and yoga spaces also top the list. Our challenge is to design elements in a unique way each time. Our clients want something special—they don’t want what their neighbor has!” Clients are particularly fond of features that arouse the senses and connect to nature. Amy shares: “The soft sound of water, the enchanting dance of fire in a fire feature, water’s reflection of the sky, the aroma of plant life such as jasmine or ylang ylang— these are ways we create unique spaces for our discerning clients.”

Above Overlooking a small lake, this pool has a stunning sculpture as a focal point, with fire features on each side framing the vista. Top An ariel view of a KWD project. Amy notes upkeep is essential: “Maintenance of the hardscape and landscape elements is a must.” Far left Incorporating contrasting colors, textures and features into landscape design stimulates multiple senses and gives depth to outdoor spaces. This condo’s eye-catching makeover is the result of editing a wealth of inspiration.

CB2’s Tropez sofa and Filaki lounger create a high-contrast scheme on the balcony, where the pillows and Fatboy’s Bolleke hanging lamps are from West Elm. The stools—Hay’s Palissade from Design Within Reach and Kartell’s Pilastro—add pops of color.

hen Nicholas Smith met with designer Ashlie Broderic to discuss a strategy for his South Florida residence, he handed over nearly 100 inspiration images gathered on Instagram the past six years. The New York financial professional knew what he liked, to be sure, but had no idea how to distill all his ideas down into one apartment. He asked Broderic: “Can you make sense of this?”

The designer sifted through the mountain of screenshots and zeroed in on a common thread. “Everything he sent me had either intense moments of color or a black-and-white, graphic nature to them,” she recalls. “He was looking for contrast, crispness.” It was an appropriate vision for his new-construction condo, perched 30 floors above the lively Wynwood neighborhood. “But it was just white walls,” Broderic says—the opposite of Nicholas’ playful, vibrant style—so she set to work translating his digital inspo into a real-life space with modern furnishings, bold punches of color and a Miami spirit. “It boiled down to a fun, refined, masculine-chic home,” she says. “As we selected pieces, we asked ourselves: Does it fall into these categories?”

From stepping through the front door, it’s clear the designer checked all the boxes. Adorned with a gallery wall of quirky David Shrigley prints, the foyer reflects the owner’s sense of humor. “It gives you a glimpse of what’s going to happen,” he says. “It’s a bit of a buildup.” Turn the corner, and the full breadth of Broderic’s design is on display in the combined dining and living area. A light fixture with wood and metal shades, for instance, “nailed our masculine-chic vibe,” she says, while a curvy forest-green sofa and pair of wavy wicker lounge chairs inject that Miami flair.

Art, too, nods to the home’s surroundings. In the living area, a linear wall piece by an Australian artist Nicholas discovered on Instagram is reminiscent of a nearby building with a rainbow-striped exterior. Yet the designer was particularly inspired by an iconic component of the area’s creative character: murals. Leaning into her client’s penchant for black and white,

Broderic covered the living area’s 30-foot-long wall in a print that mimics spray-painted street art. “The nature of the neighborhood influenced what the design became,” she says. Despite the wall’s eye-catching design, however, one aspect remains nearly invisible: A jib door hidden in the wall—concealed with no visible moldings by general contractor Daniel Artola so as not to disrupt the wallpaper—is the sole access to the primary suite. “It feels like the wall opens up,” the designer adds.

Continuing the mural inspiration, Broderic cloaked the bedroom’s headboard wall in a moody blue wallpaper with a hand-painted pattern. The rich tone reappears on the walls of the office, where she combined Nicholas’ love of books and colorblocking to create a “bookcase” of shelves affixed to a rectangular light-pink wall mural. Geometric art and a swooping lounge chair join an asymmetrical rug, the starting point of the room. “The vibrant Memphis vibe of the rug gave us a design direction,” Broderic says. “I wanted to create a pared-back, clean, edited interpretation of the look—like Memphis’ cool, glamorous older sister.”

As a counterpoint to the dark-hued spaces, the guest bedroom boasts a chic color palette of lavender and pink tones, as seen in the artwork that hangs above the bed. “I like color, but Ashlie helped me integrate it without being overwhelming,” Nicholas says. “That piece satisfies my craving for this room.” A rug in similar tones grounds the area, while the surrounding furnishings remain subdued to evoke the refined luxury feel the designer had identified in her client’s batch of inspiration.

Midway through the project, Nicholas decided to relocate to Miami full time, altering the purpose of the space from a weekend getaway to a primary home. This shifted Broderic’s mindset, too, into a more detail-oriented view that involved rounding out the residence with final touches such as accessories by some of her favorite ceramic artists that also struck a chord with her client. “She understands me better than I understand myself,” Nicholas laughs.

The designer considers this project “the apartment Instagram built,” she muses. All it took, Nicholas says, was her curator’s eye. “Somehow, from looking at all those images, she picked out exactly what resonates with me.”

HEAVY METAL

Embracing one of nature’s most utilitarian materials, a sculptor extracts fluid poetry from steel.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Compared to glittering silver and gold, steel may seem “less noble than other metals,” admits sculptor Carolina Sardi. Forged into machinery and infrastructure, the pliable alloy is most valued for its strength, not beauty. But its strict utility melts away in Sardi’s hands, becoming sinuous forms that coalesce into sculptures and installations that dangle from ceilings or meander across walls, casting dappled shadows in their wake.

The artist revels in the contradiction of her medium. “I like that I can make this industrial material into something precious,” she explains. “I can make steel look light instead of heavy and polished instead of rough.”

During Sardi’s studies at the National University of La Plata in her native Argentina, the country’s Concrete Art tradition grounded her earliest forays into sculpture. Known for its sharp abstract geometry and unconventional materials, the movement focused on distilling a pure visible language, freed from realistic representations and confined dimensions.

Today, the sculptor’s petal-like forms lean more organic in comparison, echoing the lush tropical flora of her Little Haiti studio’s adjacent garden. Yet despite the industrial precision that manipulating steel requires, her pieces— which include furnishings and architectural applications—preserve a hand-sculpted feel. Sardi first sketches the composition, then adapts the shapes into a schematic plan with scaled measurements. Large architectural installations are machine cut with AutoCAD blueprints. But for most works, like her recent exhibition at Pan American Art Projects, she draws directly onto the metal sheets, slicing out forms using a plasma cutter and welding them together. The artist then experiments with textured patinas, ombre paints and mirrored chrome and copper plating, choosing finishes “that accentuate the sculpture’s shapes,” she explains. “I’m always searching for that balance of opposites, how they react to and attract each other.”

Similarly, part of her work explores a “visual alphabet” of lines and volume. Incorporating negative space into the composition, Sardi’s pieces are integrated within the surrounding architecture, responding to the changing light. “Space is something that we don’t see, but it’s all around us,” the sculptor says. “I like to embrace its qualities.”

The Little Haiti studio of artist Carolina Sardi (opposite and bottom) displays her steel wall pieces, freestanding sculptures and architectural applications. Each composition, which is typically painted or plated in chrome or copper, plays with organic forms and balances positive and negative elements through cutouts (left and below). Her creation process involves drawing, performing geometric equations and grinding, welding and carving steel.

Good Vibrations

An interior designer’s resolution becomes reality when she brings a family’s minimalist home to life.

ear the end of one holiday season, interior designer Erin Cantu set a goal for the new year: to land her first groundup project. Not even two weeks later, she was introduced to a couple seeking help for this exact purpose. Niki Rubin and her husband, Cole, planned to build a house for their young family on a lot across the street from Niki’s childhood home. She and Cantu connected over their shared “less is more” ethos and, months earlier than expected, the interior designer’s resolution soon manifested. “It was an awesome way to start the year,” she laughs.

From the outset, Cantu and her clients envisioned a house that was refined yet conducive for an active lifestyle with three children. Plans initiated by residential designer John E. Balistreri, and the late engineer of record Paul A. Hagler, presented a contemporary West Indies-style residence with an open-concept layout that places the bedrooms upstairs and public spaces on the main floor. “We created a design that is livable and casual but formal enough for any event,” Balistreri says, noting features like ceiling beams, a stylish bar and a media room. “Even though the house is large enough for every type of gathering, we were particularly focused on keeping each area to scale and feeling homey.” Part of that involved letting in an abundance of natural light by connecting nearly every room to the exterior spaces, including creating balconies for many of the bedrooms and fully opening the family room to the covered patio. “The house lends itself to the outdoors,” observes builder David Schack, who also converted garages into an indoor basketball court for the sports-loving family. Meanwhile, in the spacious backyard, Cantu and Niki conceived a clean-lined pool with a porcelain deck, while landscape architect Chuck Yannette introduced a desert feel with succulents and agave plants.

Once the groundwork was set, the interior designer established a backdrop of mostly white walls and warm wood throughout the house. “White oak was the species of choice,” she says,

pointing to millwork. The next layer introduces a palette of durable finishes in tones of honey, caramel and tobacco that reflect her clients’ style. “My aesthetic is casual, functional and somewhat minimalist,” Niki describes. “I like a worn-in polished look and want all the materials in the house to be practical.” The media room walls, for instance, have a textural matte application, and the club room boasts a bar with a hammeredcopper top and herringbone-patterned flooring. But the showstopper is the deeply veined Calacatta Gold marble of the kitchen’s backsplash and double islands. “Every neutral color we wanted to embrace is in that stone—it ties everything together,” Cantu says. “We wanted it to be super dynamic and dramatic, taking more of a maximalist approach there.”

Echoing the home’s framework, the interior designer leaned into natural colors for furnishings and focused on comfortable, enduring textures. Leather appears on the metal-armed living room chairs and wood-framed dining chairs, exuding a relaxed Danish ambience. In the cozy primary bedroom, she grounded the space with a vintage rug in a mix of browns and deep eggplant tones. By highly editing the selections to create a contemporary, soft atmosphere, Cantu allowed the focal point in most spaces to be the accent lighting, like the dining room’s twin mottled-brass fixtures and the stairwell’s brass sconces. “The background in the house is cool and relaxed and doesn’t have a lot of detail,” she notes. “This enabled us to use the lighting as a subtle jewelry effect.” Then there is the art collection, in which the interior designer and the Rubins arranged cheeky works such as paintings of dueling 1990s rap stars in the living and dining spaces. “We put one on the east side and the other on the west side—like an old-school rap feud,” Cantu says. “They’re huge conversation pieces.”

The creation of the home proved to be a moment of kismet not just for the interior designer but also the owners. “When my husband and I were 18, he said he was going to live on this lot one day,” Niki recalls. “I thought he was crazy, but it was meant to be.”

Old Florida takes a gutsy, 21 st -century twirl

In the entry niche, Schumacher’s Mrs. Howell grass cloth—framed in bamboo—offers a chic backdrop for Woodbridge Furniture’s Scroll console, a 17th-century Italian mirror and Imari porcelain vessels. “We always encourage clients to share collections in clusters for more impact,” designer Janie Molster explains.

ome 25 years ago, when designer Janie Molster first visited South Florida, she fell fast for its retro charms and the sense of slow living that blanketed the area like pixie dust. Fast-forward 20 years, and the designer returned to find the region bustling. “The transformation, from the arts scene to the restaurants and nightlife, was like magic,” she recalls. At once, Molster saw the idyll as a place that would nourish her curiosities—and lure her large family brood.

Soon, after a couple rental stints, she and her husband, John, secured a condo of their own. Situated within a 1970s club property, their Delray Beach residence was a walk back in time itself. While certain period details were charming (see: the hallway to her front door, lined with a painted raffia grass cloth “you might find at Sister Parish’s house,” the designer quips) others, like vinyl laminate floors and dated millwork, were less so. A cosmetic renovation, she says, to “clean and open things up” and to brighten the spotlight on the unit’s best feature—magnificent views of the golf course—was the first order of business.

Molster’s “when in Rome” approach proved a many-layered thing. “Part of me wanted to go full-on Palm Beach Regency, but there’s another side of me that loves modern design, so I had to find a way to marry the two ideas,” she explains. Ultimately, finding that rub while honoring the building’s roots would guide the process.

What the designer didn’t anticipate, however, was how naturally those worlds would come together, spurred by her passions for contemporary art and Chinese porcelain. She began collecting both “willy-nilly” immediately after purchasing the condo, amassing her treasures in the guest room of her primary residence in Richmond, Virginia. “My husband would come in, look around and say, ‘Janie, have you even ordered a sofa yet?’ ” Molster laughs. But there was a method to the madness: “Piles of porcelain sitting next to contemporary art summed up the inspiration,” she shares. The room became her design lab, and she’d reference the shapes and colors within when selecting every detail that followed.

Take the living room, where a pair of Stephanie Henderson bull’s-eye paintings inspired the rounded backs of both sets of lounge chairs as well as their placement atop the sphere jute underfoot. “Ironically, the 1970s saw the birth of the circular rug,” the designer observes. In a move she describes as “landscaping the room,” she carried the theme through to the finishing touches, deploying curvaceous ginger jars across tables, floors and other surfaces.

In the primary bedroom, it was a textile that led the way. Breaking her own rule of avoiding bold prints as a primary focus, Molster selected a fabric depicting yellow flowers for the canopy of her gilded bed and the drapes. “That floral is so different for me, and it’s just fabulous,” she says. “That was my inner Florida demon coming out.” One could argue the designer’s alter ego also had a say in the guest bedroom, with its bamboo beds and monochromatic palm tree wallpaper. But, as with the rest of the residence, anything verging on pastiche is tempered. “The colorway is crisp and not too saccharine,” she muses. “Black and white is a great palette cleanser.” A low-ceilinged hallway designed as a “psychedelic tunnel” with a swirling yellow pattern on the walls and a sunny gold print on the ceiling provides another edgy counterpoint. “I thought, ‘If I can’t fix this architecturally, I’m going to make it something you’re enticed to wander down,’ ” Molster adds.

The designer went all-in on her yellow-andgreen palette for its “appropriateness for the era of the building and for Florida’s sunshine and lushness,” she notes. Still, no Janie Molster project would be complete without her favorite hue—pink—and accordingly, the breakfast nook was given a rosy botanical mural. To her surprise, it’s the space she spends the least amount of time in. “I imagined working from that adorable room surrounded by pink and flowering vines, but my husband has commandeered it,” she laughs.

In turn, Molster has claimed a spot of her own: a skirted settee in the sun room she reassigned as a dining area and lounge. “I expected it to function as an overflow entertaining space, but I have my coffee there every morning,” she says. “Places can unfold and surprise you.” Not unlike a certain Florida town that struck a chord and lodged in her heart many years ago.
