IN GOOD TASTE
After 11 years at the San Francisco Design Center, Jeff Holt and Peter West’s showroom Hewn (right) is now situated down the block on Kansas Street. At the 10,000-square-foot venue, “vast sight lines create a feeling of openness and accessibility,” Holt says. With the move came the addition of products from Transparent Atelier, Parete and Martyn Lawrence Bullard as well as the expansion of the HewnX Collection (upholstered pieces, custom plaster designs and lighting). Heading north to Healdsburg, Sklo’s trade showroom (below) is buzzing. Founded by Pavel Hanousek and husband-and-wife design team Paul Pavlak and Karen Gilbert, the company designs and prototypes its handblown glass lighting and objects just a few blocks from Healdsburg Plaza. Manufacturing takes place in the Czech Republic, “a country with a centuries-old craft tradition,” Gilbert says. The resulting products combine highly skilled techniques with sculptural forms. hewnsf.com; sklo.com
Surrounded by vines, a lavender garden and 125-year-old olive trees, the restored 1890s Victorian that now serves as family-owned wine producer Mathew Bruno’s first tasting room evokes the Napa Valley of yesteryear. Working with Michael Guthrie & Co. Architects, interior designer Chris Reed preserved the façade while “breathing new life into the space,” she says. Inside—where natural light comes courtesy of original bay windows—deep red and rosy hues reminiscent of cabernet are paired with ochre and pale gold. Custom-dyed grass cloth on the walls and end-grain French oak flooring serve as a backdrop for sinuous sofas and curved-back chairs. “I envisioned a more contemporary interior design—one that would seamlessly blend the charm of the 19th century with the modern design tastes and preferences of today—to create a comfortable space for all to enjoy the fine wines of Mathew Bruno,” Reed says. Tastings occur indoors and out, including a private experience featuring lunch and bocce. mathewbruno.com

GIVING BACK
TALKING SHOP WESTPARK HOME
WRITTEN BY COLLEEN MCTIERNAN
Katie Monkhouse of Katie Monkhouse Interior Design had always wanted her own shop. After a trip to The Original Round Top Antiques Fair left her with a larger inventory of vintage items than she knew what to do with, she made the leap and opened Westpark Home. Playing host to a mix of vintage finds, custom furnishings and original art, among other objects, the showroom exudes an eclectic and earthy ambience. Here the LUXE Next In Design 99 talent gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how she stocks the shop. shopwestparkhome.com What do you look for when sourcing vintage? I look for shapes that feel interesting and architectural. Rehabbing pieces is the most fun. Finding the perfect fabric or finish to breathe new life into them brings me so much joy and creative satisfaction. How do you create new furniture designs? I’ve worked with my furniture maker, Michael Finizio, for years. The designs are always born out of a need that can’t be easily filled with our go-to vendors. From there we decide what makes it into the Westpark line.

It’s not only Silicon Valley startups that originate in garages. Former antiques dealer and interior designer Carolyn Flannery’s nonprofit, Make It Home, began with amassing furnishings in her Marin garage. Through connections made from volunteer work, Flannery passed along pieces “to foster youth embarking on their independent living journey or foster families accommodating new arrivals,” she recalls, ultimately expanding beyond the foster care system to “any social agency with clients needing furnishings.” Make It Home receives donations—including accessories and small appliances—from designers, stagers, organizers, real estate agents and the general public. The items are checked, cleaned and, if necessary, repaired. Based on client needs, room concepts are developed by Make It Home volunteers, many of whom have experience in design and staging, and then installed. Carpentry classes recently launched, and the organization’s first upholstery class is slated for January. “We are not just providing furniture,” Flannery says, “but also delivering dignity and pride of place that will hopefully aid future successes.” makeithomebayarea.org
STATE OF THE ART COL GALLERY
Callie Jones and Julia Li—previously of Jessica Silverman Gallery and the Asian Art Museum, respectively—have joined forces on a new contemporary gallery in historic Ghirardelli Square. “We immediately connected,” Jones recalls of meeting Li. “As an artist herself, I knew she was uniquely positioned to champion artists here with me in the Bay Area.” Featuring emerging as well as established creatives, the duo hopes that Col Gallery is inviting to first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike. It opened with “Becoming,” a cross-generational exhibition of women abstractionists. The shows change about every five weeks, with Francisco Moreno’s paintings occupying the space in January. “All of the artists we present are ones we believe in—many of whom we have personally collected,” Jones notes. “Also, most of the artists we are working with have not previously exhibited in San Francisco, so we are extremely excited to be able to share their work here.” colgallery.co

With her new hybrid cafe and retail collective in St. Helena, owner and lead designer Ann Backen sought to create “a ‘lab’ for living a beautiful life, so to speak,” she says. Offering “an alternative to fastpaced cycles and consumption,” Backen—the cofounder and CEO of architectural firm Backen & Backen—has assembled products both old and new. Antique furniture and garden decor mingle with goods from the likes of Marfa Stance, Haand and local artisans. The interior, she notes, nods to Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck, with their influences manifesting in oversize planters containing olive trees and the giant green-and-cream squares painted on the main floor. In addition to a living green wall, an expanse of wall space is used to project films and documentaries, along with inspiring quotes and images. The overall aesthetic, Backen explains, is “a coexistence of opposing forces: luxurious yet humble, elegant yet understated, restorative yet energizing.” Amid a muted palette of emerald, taupe, amber, sage, khaki and pebble, saddle leather banquettes beckon. “If the No|Ma House space could talk,” she continues, “it would say, ‘Welcome. Make yourself at home; trust your taste; make a new friend; be curious; find a sweet spot to sit with a book and a snack; and stay a while.’ ” nomahousecafeandcollective.com
LAUNCH Modern Perennial Beth Miles, whose sustainable brand Grange Home is headquartered in San Francisco, and Palm Springs-based fashion designer Trina Turk have started a line of pillows (top), called Modern Perennial. “I approached Trina with the idea that I could take Trina Turk’s textile overages and create a collaborative home assortment,” Miles recalls. “And as luck would have it, they had recently been considering what to do with their vast archive.” According to Turk, “These fabrics are signature prints exclusive to Trina Turk, along with many custom jacquards woven by top European mills.” The pillows also incorporate deadstock material, trims and regenerative fibers used in Miles’ work. Limited-run designs, available on the Grange Home website and at the Trina Turk flagship boutique in Palm Springs, will be released on a continuing basis. thegrangehome.com; trinaturk.com Shirley Robinson Textiles For her foray into textiles (above), San Francisco interior designer Shirley Robinson has created a range composed of cashmere and camel’s hair that is represented by Kneedler Fauchère. Its 12 weave patterns are hand-spun in Nepal, in up to 12 colors per weave made with organic dyes, and are “intended for upholstery, blankets and pillow coverings,” she says. Custom hues are also an option for the 100% cashmere weaves. “This collection has taken me over four years to develop and curate,” Robinson adds. “I am very excited to offer a luxurious product that is modern yet timeless.” shirleyrobinsontextiles.com

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com
ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT
FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com
ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com
Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org
DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Chevron Comeback Arguably an overdone go-to of the early aughts, New York City designer Nick Olsen implores design buffs to recall chevron’s posh uses—think Emilio Terry chairs, 18th century Georgian doors, and those memorable floors by Albert Hadley. “I keep going back to chevron because you can tweak the proportions, add embellishments and color, and, voila, it feels fresh all over again,” he raves. Case in point: this Olsen-designed Bedford, New York, dining room. nickolsenstyle.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

From this vantage point, imbibers are treated to a theater of tile featuring a bespoke scene of two cats (a nod to the bar’s name) against the Williamsburgh Savings Bank and the New York skyline in the interior’s signature green hue. This striking tableau exemplifies Neidich’s myriad inspirations—Parisian bistros, boutique hotels, diverse decorative styles and periods—combined in a look all his own. industrywest.com

Rachel Donath’s metal Arte mirror, leaning above the ledge of a coveted corner seat, reflects the dozens of frames that currently hang. The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

pproaching each architectural project with fresh eyes while striving to reflect the personalities of the people who will live, work and play there is the key to delivering visionary designs. So it is with Houman Sharif, AIA, and Ghazaleh Jamei, AIA, Co-Founders of MEMarchitecture. “Because our ultimate goal is the artful interpretation of the functional realities of our clients’ rich and complex lives, they remain the central focus of our design philosophy,” Jamei says. To achieve this, Jamei, Sharif and their expert team put great emphasis on listening and observing so that they can fully understand who their clients are and how they wish to
live. “When creating environments for our diverse and design-savvy clientele, we impose no preconceived language,” Sharif shares. “Instead, we embrace a set of guiding principles that include the importance of coherence and continuity, the joys of light and transparency, elements of surprise and contrast, and purity in the use of materials. Although our architectural designs belong very much to the 21st century, they’re always highly crafted, which makes them warm, approachable and sophisticated. With an awareness that our designs will impact our clients’ lives for years to come, we are committed to fulfilling their most profound desires.”
ASK THE EXPERT Describe the types of communities and projects that best reflect your work. Although our primary focus over the past 14 years has been on luxury residential projects, we frequently apply our keen attention to detail and unique skills to select retail and office projects on both coasts. What’s new? Although the Bay Area will always be our base, we’re actively expanding in South Florida with two exciting Miami projects—hopefully with more on the horizon. To this point, what’s been your greatest success? With our team’s exceptional hard work and dedication, we’ve built an amazing portfolio of projects and garnered such strong trust with our clientele that many have come to us time and again with exciting new projects.

reating uniquely bespoke spaces is something that the Del Gavio Group prides itself on. Whether designing for a contemporary home, a farmhouse, a midcentury modern, a Craftsman style or something else entirely, the team can flex to any desired style— and create an outstanding design. Principal and Lead Designer Patricia Del Gavio says, “I typically design custom-made lighting fixtures to tie spaces together as a finishing touch. We also customize many furniture pieces to ensure that each space is unique.” The firm got its start over 20 years ago in the office furniture industry. Struck by the limited choices, Del Gavio Group was founded to create all aspects of design. They soon moved from offices into the homes of their clients, as residential projects quickly followed. The firm involves clients in their work through their signature “5 Phase” process, where they learn all about the client, their family and lifestyle. The client’s priorities for their

What communities does your firm work in? We work in the greater Bay Area, San Francisco, Carmel and the East Bay, plus Palm Springs and Newport Beach in Southern California. My daughter Olivia recently joined the team from Colorado so we now work on projects there. Honestly, we can go anywhere—we were recently part of a London project. I love to travel! What location would you love to work in that you haven’t already? Take me to Italy! I dream about designing for Tuscany. I would love to partner and create a vacation property there in the future. It’s just a matter of time. What’s next for your firm? I am working to create a furniture line that provides custom sizes and finishes of items we feel are missing in today’s product offerings. We are growing and welcome talented designers to check us out!

xploring, embracing and perfecting a multitude of styles, while remaining firmly focused on each client’s wants and needs is the key to building an exceptional design portfolio. So it is with Holly Hollenbeck and her awardwinning team at HSH Interiors. “I founded HSH Interiors in 2001 with the intention of keeping it small forever,” Hollenbeck says. “At the time, I was raising my three children and, because I’ve always enjoyed giving my full attention to each client, I would only take on a few projects at once.” As Hollenbeck’s children grew, so did her ability to expand her firm’s aesthetic reach. Today, HSH Interiors has two offices—one in San Francisco and the other in Tahoe—as well as projects and clients spanning from San Francisco to the Dominican Republic. “We are unusual in that we work equally well across a broad array of styles,” Hollenbeck shares. “This includes the recent restoration and update of a historic 1892 home in Marin County

and the completion of a brand-new, 9,000-square-foot modern home in Wyoming.” With that said, there are a number of commonalities found in every HSH design. “We like grounded glamour, statement lighting, luxurious area rugs, custom furnishings, pedigree vintage pieces and homes that speak to each client’s unique personality and lifestyle.”
Describe the types of communities you work in. Our two HSH Interiors offices could not feel more different. San Francisco is a modern white cube with metal and glass demising walls that feels very urban and sophisticated, while Tahoe is in an 1870 home that is the last remaining building from Truckee’s original Chinatown. These two locations reflect the wide variety of our projects, which range from historic landmarks to charming beachfront properties to cutting-edge glass, steel and concrete ski homes. What has been your greatest success thus far? In life, it has been raising three happy, smart, well-adjusted children. here is a lovely clarity that comes from a distinctive style paired with a clear methodology. Karma Dog Construction, founded in 2004, uses their vision and skill to focus on a barn modern aesthetic with a green building philosophy. Green building and passive design have also been a part of our process for decades because they yield the most efficient product.” The company has been building and designing homes in Northern California Wine Country for nearly 20 years, and prides itself on long-standing relationships with clients and vendors. “We listen to client needs, respect our team of employees and subcontractors by building long-term relationships,” says Vice President Micah Addison. “Strong collaboration brings out the best in each team member and project, and is reflected

in the community we build.” “Our team members also take pride in their ability to develop trusting, long-term relationships with our clients.” Preston weighs in to add, “We are experts in maximizing a site’s building potential.”
How do you include the client in your creative process? Preston: Clients are central to our process and their influences are integral to our designs. We nurture the design ideas in each client while bringing the influence of our aesthetic and the importance of natural forms and function into the final product. What communities do you work in? Micah: We work primarily in Northern California Wine Country: Asti, Healdsburg, Geyserville and Cloverdale. Many homes we remodel are older and historical. We strive to maintain their character while creating modern upgrades— blending the best of the old and new. How can clients work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Preston: Find a designer you can trust; one that respects your ideas and budget.

He answers, “Every project is different. The adaptive nature of our firm and creative processes means we will likely be working on something we haven’t even thought of yet.”
What is the first project that put your company on the map? One breakthrough project involved renovating a historic estate from 1908 with period-accurate materials and processes by uniting 275 artisans and materials from over eight different nations. Mastering this task set a new benchmark for our firm. Since this monumental undertaking, the term “challenging” has been reframed as an invitation to excel, steering us to bolder ventures. How do you include clients in your creative process? We actively listen to what is being said and not said. We listen to our clients’ words, communication styles and unique personality traits. We believe the best ideas emerge when our clients are comfortable to speak freely and be true to themselves in a solutions-based atmosphere.

t the core of many a creative soul lies passion, drive and a deeply ingrained set of values and philosophies. Growing up in Ireland, Bryan Murphy developed an appreciation for great architects and their work early on. That not only motivated him to study architecture but set him on the path to become a renowned master builder who, today, leads the award-winning team at PCH. Upon joining the firm in 1993, Murphy immediately connected with its mission to create beautiful, functional, one-of-a-kind custom homes through close collaboration with architects, designers and their clients. “Our ideal situation is one where we
get to work with the client and their design teams from the very start of the process,” Murphy says. “Preconstruction planning allows for the best creative outcome as all parties get to contribute to the end goal and bring the client’s dream home to life.” Continually impressed by his team’s dedication to artistry, quality, service and teamwork, Murphy took a leap of faith and purchased PCH in 2014. “The team we have here at PCH is a constant inspiration to me,” he shares. “The level of experience and talent I get to work with every day is phenomenal. Their dedication to one another, to our clients and to outstanding craft is what makes PCH a true industry leader.”
ASK THE EXPERT How is technology furthering your work? New and improving technologies at the jobsite have really elevated our process. These include drones and 360-degree imagery, which capture real-time project data and videos that can then be mapped to a floor plan. Additionally, we are excited about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze data and optimize performance in home systems.

Since taking the reins in 2014, we have completed a vast number of challenging projects, expanded our geographic areas and dedicated ourselves to mentoring young people interested in construction. I am very proud of these successes and look forward to continuing to learn, grow and give back with my amazing team.

reat design is a blend of talent, skill, passion and collaboration. Since 2008, Lindsay Anyon Brier and her award-winning team at Anyon Interior Design have worked closely with their clients and professional partners to create outstanding environments that deliver beauty, function and vision. “In every space we design, in every interaction with our clients and in every collaboration with architects and other design teams, we seek to invite, intrigue and create the enduring connections that make life and work meaningful,” Anyon Brier says. “That is why ‘Design is a Conversation’ is the cornerstone of our firm.” That unique approach is what
allows AID to design across a broad spectrum of styles and aesthetics. “Rather than focusing on one particular style, we approach each project knowing that no two clients and no two spaces are the same,” the Gold List Honoree explains. “Because each person and personal space comes with unique wants, needs, stories and points of view, it is our job to stay open to the beauty inherent in all of them, to sense where there is opportunity, to create solutions where there are challenges and to bring a fresh, bold, modern perspective to everything we touch. The one constant in all of our work is thoughtfully edited spaces brimming with inspiration.”
ASK THE EXPERT Share highlights from your firm’s background. It’s hard to believe that we just celebrated 15 years in business! Having one of our very first jobs published—a pied-à-terre I designed for my aunt and uncle in San Francisco— helped put us on the map. From there, we participated in a show house, my own home was published in a national publication and, in 2013, we relocated to our present studio on Sacramento Street and launched Anyon Atelier, which quickly gained an international reputation for excellence and became a cornerstone of our business.

What project put you on the map? In the early days of the studio, we worked closely with a client and their builder on a ground-up construction project where we specified all of the materials, consulted on the architectural plans and fully furnished the home. It was a thrilling project that fueled our ethos to deliver a thoughtful client experience and flawless custom turnkey design. How do you include the client in your creative process? Our clients are the central focus of our projects, so it is of the utmost importance that we understand everything about them, from their challenges to their needs to their biggest design dreams. collaborative approach to interior design guided by a skilled professional is the key to creating spaces that are personal, beautiful, comfortable, functional and stand the test of time. With nearly two decades of experience, Katie McCaffrey, along with her exceptional team at McCaffrey Design Group, brings clients’ needs and visions to life in the most unique and luxurious ways. “What makes a client happy? What functionality will make their life easier and more joyful? How do we make their home a source of comfort and contentment?” McCaffrey asks, before explaining. “The answer is listening and learning. Open communication and teamwork
are the best tools we have to understand our clients’ lifestyles and goals— including the all-important budget—so that we can source superior materials and smart designs that deliver style and substance, and surpass expectations.” Once the relationship has been established, McCaffrey brings the power of her design talent to each project. When asked what best defines her aesthetic, McCaffrey exclaims, “Color! We are not afraid to use it and have fun with it. We can and do design neutral rooms, but color is always a part of our spaces, whether it’s a pop, an accent or a complete design scheme, color brings elegance and leaves a lasting impression.”

I once saw a spotted ray at the aquarium and thought, “What a beautiful color combination. I’m going to use that.” Has the digital sphere played a part in your success? Social media has played a big part in our success—Instagram, in particular, is huge! Additionally, the ability to share digital design boards with our clients has been a tremendous game changer. Plus, virtual reality is becoming a major tool in our industry and is something we are very excited about. Being able to walk a client through their future home will be incredible.

W
hen interior designer Ken Fulk met this Mill Valley couple in 2002, they were entering a season of life in which the combined needs of their three young children and active work and social lives dictated many elements of their home. Over the next two decades, as Fulk worked with them on a number of residences, he says they essentially “grew up together” and became friends. Along the way, Fulk collaborated on one of those dwellings with residential designer Stephen Willrich, who has also enjoyed a long, congenial history with the family. So, when the couple again called on both design pros to create a new abode, there was that spark of excitement that comes when getting an ace team back together. This time, the couple wanted to construct a dwelling just for the two of them. “After having a very robust and vibrant family life, this was to be a manifestation of what living together looks like after the kids have moved on,” Fulk says. “The house was to feel like a big, happy exhale.” For this new chapter, the pair chose a special location. “When I first walked the property with the clients, we were struck by its unique qualities,” Willrich says. “It’s not often that you find a hilltop perch surrounded by the stunning Marin hills with views stretching from the iconic Mount Tamalpais to the San Francisco Bay.” Adds Fulk, “California has this arresting, humbling beauty, and the fact that you can literally see the city yet have wild nature at your doorstep—it’s staggering.” Willrich’s aim of integrating the architecture of the home with the environment drove every element of his design, from the subdued exterior palette of Western red cedar siding and roughedged limestone walls to the standing-seam metal roof. Sliding steel-framed pocket doors unite the indoor living spaces with the gardens crafted by landscape architect Eric Blasen and his team. In all the primary living spaces, when the glass panels move away, “the line between interior and exterior space blurs,” Willrich notes. General contractor John Rechin adds, “Great care was taken to ensure one could walk out of the home to the outdoors on the same
plane.” Once outside, subtle elevation changes among the dining terrace, fire pit and gardens follow the site’s topography down toward the infinity pool at the hilltop’s edge. “We designed it to feel like a fountain you can swim in,” Blasen says. “It’s a reflecting pool that carries the view out into the landscape.” The design team brought the exterior materials of wood, stone and steel inside the house, installing a white oak that Rechin had finished in place so it could wrap floors, walls and ceilings in a consistent natural tone—“it’s honeyed but not dark like grandpa’s hunting cabin,” notes Fulk, who advocated for some hand-plastered surfaces and hand-glazed tiles. “The house had to have a soulful quality and contain things that live and breathe and age purposefully.” This quiet canvas “gave us permission to bring in strong, opinionated elements, such as the shimmering thistle-pattern wallpaper in the powder room and the joyous little bar that’s its own sort of jewel box in the living room,” the designer says. “The house is so solid in its foundational elements that it could handle us adorning it.” Choosing his moments carefully, Fulk layered in saturated jewel tones. A plummy lacquer adorns a dressing room’s walls, while deep aquamarine skies mark a hallway wallpaper depicting painterly cranes. The bold color choices extend to the furnishings and decor, with ruby red making an appearance on the family room’s custom chandelier inspired by a Jean Royère design and amethyst-colored upholstery adorning the dining room’s Chippendale-style chairs. Further energizing each space is a highcontrast pattern play: a houndstooth and stripe on a Louis XIV-style bed; bold black-and-white lines on the living room’s Kuba cloth-patterned sofa; and gleaming brass inlays in the primary suite’s ebonized wood headboard wall. “The clients have always been up for a little fun,” Fulk says of the array. “Especially in this house, where they didn’t have so many things, it was about finding elements that speak to them, whether they’re blue-chip pieces or flea-market finds. It’s that unexpected mucking things up that makes a more interesting house. You must live up to architecture and nature, after all. You can’t just take a backseat.”

T
he recent remodel of this Mill Valley home represented its third time at bat. The bases were loaded: From its place at the top of a knoll, the dwelling enjoys sparkling views of San Francisco, the Bay’s blue waters and Mount Tamalpais’ lush greenery. Built in 1993 by an architect-owner, the structure resembled an Adirondack lodge, complete with a hefty stone fireplace in the living room. Its second owner made modifications to imbue a Hamptons vibe, including painting the copious wood paneling white. Its third and latest owners, a couple in their early 30s, enlisted a team to conjure a fresh California modern aesthetic. Players included interior designer Corine Maggio, who had worked on two previous projects with the couple; architect Heidi Richardson, who knows the original owner and is well-versed in the property’s history; and general contractor Michael Houts, whose skills for navigating challenges ranging from faulty waterproofing to electrical issues proved invaluable. “It is interesting how a dwelling’s basic form can transform itself over time into something else,” Richardson observes. “Even though we did not move a lot of walls or elements, and the form stayed the same, the house looks very different.” Timing dictated the extent of the project, with early ideas—like a major façade makeover—scrapped in favor of expedient occupancy. “The scope of what we had initially imagined was going to take five years to complete,” says the homeowner, who moved in shortly after the year-long remodel—lightning fast in construction time—concluded. From Richardson’s perspective, there were some key items to address; chief among them was the removal of the timber trusses in the living room. “They were too heavy-handed and low,” she recalls. That edit opened the space, accentuating the cathedral ceiling’s 21-foothigh peak and yielding a “blank slate of a room filled with natural light,” the client says. “That’s the best canvas—an airy room with a beautiful view.” It was the perfect backdrop for Maggio to work her magic. Throughout the house, she
used a warm white on the walls and ceilings, which, combined with newly installed white oak flooring, achieved the light and airy atmosphere that the client desired. Replacing the original stone version, the living room now features a clean-lined Calacatta Viola fireplace surround, on top of which rests an ornate 7-foot-tall mirror. Character is further developed with vintage pieces, like the space’s antique rug as well as the church pew in the entry. Integrating furnishings and accessories endowed with personal history was a priority. “When you have a lot of new, new, new, a room can seem one-dimensional,” the homeowner says. “I come from a family of sentimental people.” It’s a heritage that Maggio was happy to celebrate with moves designed to stir the heartstrings. In the breakfast nook, as part of a gallery wall, she incorporated a print that the client’s grandparents brought back from their honeymoon along with a photo of a great-aunt in her wedding dress. Other elements are decidedly contemporary, like the sleek staircase modernized by Richardson and Maggio. Gone are the chunky newel posts and balusters, as well as the dark wood handrails, treads and risers. The current pared-down iron-and-oak design “looks so simple,” Maggio says, “but it’s deceptive, as there was a large amount of work involved.” Replacing doors and windows was another game changer, especially the introduction of an accordion door that makes the boundary between the dining room and expansive deck practically disappear. Meanwhile, the dwelling’s smaller venues presented an opportunity for Maggio to “really go for it,” as she says. Cases in point: a pair of powder rooms wallpapered in exuberant patterns; a bold palm print for one and a charming toile in the other. For the homeowner, who prizes both form and function, the swing that achieved a design grand slam proved to be keeping things simple and approachable. “I joked with Corine that all the materials need to be bulletproof because we should assume that there’s a muddy Lab running all over the place,” she says of Oliver, the canine in residence. “It was important to me not to get too refined. After all, the whole point of this home is to put the people in it at ease.”

hen Lucy Martin goes foraging for mushrooms, it’s for artistic rather than culinary purposes. Martin’s luminescent forest paintings capture the kinds of details many of us stroll right past: a cluster of red-cap mushrooms encircling the base of a redwood tree, fallen acorns nestled in a thicket of decomposing leaves, a twisted oak branch traced with a lacework of lichen. “There is nowhere I’d rather be than surrounded by trees,” says Martin, who grew up in Boulder and currently lives in Sonoma County. “Since childhood, this has been my refuge and the place where I’m happiest, calmest and most content.” Although some of Martin’s paintings have a fanciful air—as if illustrating a Grimm’s fairy tale set in the Black Forest—she is quick to clarify that all are drawn from real life; they are both evocative and botanically accurate. When Martin spies an intriguing vignette, she takes photos and brings specimens back to her studio to recreate the scene. “With mushrooms, for example, I’ll also gather the surrounding leaves, twigs, redwood needles, fir cones, acorns and moss to set up a little composition,” she says. Mixing watercolors with more heavily pigmented gouache, the artist applies paint to paper in multiple layers. “When I’m painting bark, I’ll start with the darkest shade, apply a texture over that with a very dry brush and then carefully add washes on top to add color,” Martin explains. The artist’s travels have taken her to forests from Mallorca to Pennsylvania to Point Reyes, and her “small landscapes,” as she calls them, act as portals to these serene settings. One can almost sense the cool, moist air and smell that distinctive forest mélange of fresh green growth and decay—like the olfactory equivalent of umami. “My collectors tell me my work makes them feel as if they’re in the forest, even when they’re miles away,” Martin says. “I believe it’s healing for people to be immersed in nature. And if we are going to save this beautiful planet, it’s important we not just do so for practical reasons but because we love it—the trees, the fungi, the animals and birds—all of it. I think—I hope—this can motivate us to act not only for ourselves but for our children and beyond.”
Lucy Martin’s art focuses on nature’s details, as seen in Valley Oak with Oak Galls and Lichen (opposite). Her studio (bottom) is filled with foraged objects (left) that inspire her work. Another painting, Five Leaves (below), examines mottled specimens.

In Woodside, a new home reflects both the people within and its lush landscape. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y PAU L DY E R S T Y L I N G B Y Y E D DA M O R R I S O N
The family room opens to a terrace shaded by a large oak tree. Fabricated by Kroll Furniture, the Mariaflora-upholstered custom sofa faces a coffee table crafted by Statsky Design. By the window is a chaise from Room; the rug is by Marc Phillips.
L
ooking back at the homes his firm has created, architect Timothy Chappelle says this new Woodside abode “has one of the most unusual shapes.” The residence, situated at the top of a hill, follows the serpentine contours of the landscape as it cascades down the slope, creating a sense of connection and timelessness as it goes. Chappelle spread the home along the ridgeline, keeping it to one story (though there is a basement) to be sympathetic to the valley below. “We didn’t want to be a bright white box on the hill,” he explains. And by cleverly positioning the building, the architect was also able to protect the property’s oak trees, one of which, just off a patio, acts as “the guardian of the house,” he says. To establish a sense of history, Chappelle and the owners—a couple with three children— focused on an agrarian architectural style and a natural material palette: cedar for depth and texture, St. Helena stone as a tie to wine country and a corrugated metal roof. “Tim and his team are masterful at creating beautiful, high impact spaces that still feel comfortable,” the husband says. “We gravitated to a design that felt like it had always been there,” the wife adds. “We love the old-world style because it reminds us of a Tuscan villa we stayed in many years ago.” Brought on to realize Chappelle’s design, general contractor Mike Smith refers to the new abode as “one of my most gratifying builds,” he says, noting the pool house and fitness barn that round out the site. “Tim’s approach to compound architecture, with all its different massing, just blends beautifully with nature. It’s a combination of rustic and modern.” The interiors speak the same language, with designer Jennifer Robin taking an equally considered approach. “My goal was to create interiors conducive to entertaining while maintaining comfort for more intimate family connections, as well as durability for everyday life,” she explains. “Every room has a distinct personality and function, yet we also wanted to ensure cohesion as one transitions from space to space.” To that end, she blended mountain and wine country aesthetics
with the homeowners’ more traditional tastes for a unique experience. “It was amazing how quickly Jen got our style,” the wife says. “The whole house reflects our family and how we live. It’s more beautiful than we could ever have imagined but still so comfortable and warm.” “Working with a team of detail-oriented craftsmen was instrumental in bringing the design vision to life,” adds Robin’s project manager, Dani Souza. That vision resulted in an airy wire-brushed cedar dining room ceiling as well as a living room with a large cocktail bar and doors that open to the patio and fire pit. The kitchen, with its curved built-in banquette, is specially designed for more casual family gatherings. “It’s my dream kitchen that I’ve been waiting 20 years to cook in,” the wife says. Other key spaces include a media and games room that connects to an exterior dining pavilion and barbecue area, and a primary bedroom suite designed to “nurture and promote rest and revival,” Robin describes. “The richly saturated upholstered wall is unexpected but perfectly harmonizes with the emerald tones of the landscape.” There are “smaller moments that we treasure, too,” explains the wife, like a nook for the Bösendorfer piano (“Our very first purchase for the home,” she recalls) and a daybed that overlooks that majestic guardian oak. Landscape architects Ben Langford and Johnson Bullard assisted the homeowners in further tailoring the site to their interests. “Our work is about connecting people to place and crafting everyday experiences they can delight in,” says Langford, noting the sports lawn, olive grove near the pool, fruit trees by the tennis court, vegetable garden, and new vineyard created by David Page of Post & Trellis, which had its first harvest last fall. There are also climbing roses in a nod to the wife’s mother’s rose garden, and flowering trees that recall places the couple have been together. “It helps clients connect more to a site by adding plants that mean something to them,” Bullard says. “The way this house flows encourages everyone to be present in each place—it’s a testament to Tim’s architecture,” Bullard continues. “This house, inside and outside, is a collection of experiences.”
