EDITOR’S LETTER

THE SUMMER PLACE

For me, summer is a time to go home.

That is, wherever the place is that you feel most at home. The place where an afternoon well

spent is one in a cozy place with a good book. The place where digging into a flower bed is a leisure activity, not a task to master quickly. The place where making dinner can be the day’s work, if you are so inclined. Summer is time to go to the cottage, the cabin, the camp, the boat, the summer place or country house. It’s when we pile into cars and head “out of town.” It’s the time of year that we yearn for somewhere slower, greener and more relaxed. Wherever that spot may be for each of us, these short summer months are when invisible ties pull taut and bring us home, to our happy place. For this, our Summer issue, we asked our resident designer duo – Colin and Justin – to offer their best advice on bringing your cottage décor up a notch (page 20). They offer their musings to bring your summer place closer to the five-star resort getaway you (or your guests) may be dreaming about. This issue’s home tour too, takes us to the cottage (page 22). We get a peek inside one cottageowner’s newly designed dream getaway, custom-made to fit her multi-generational family for years to come. With Canada Day the next long weekend on the calendar, we were inspired to bring you a unique, Canadian destination to explore in this issue’s travel section. Writer Andrea Karr visited the remote area of British Columbia known as Desolation Sound (page 48) and returned wanting to share her experience with everyone; while secretly hoping they will never visit. In each issue of LUXE we try to bring you, our readers, the stories of people and places we think are doing beautiful, creative work who are also Canadian. This issue, we have to thank Canadian resort wear designer Chelsea Chen and her company Ciao Sea for sharing their work with us. Her swim and resort wear are featured in the Style section, as well as on our cover. We couldn’t be happier with the results. This summer, be sure to find some time to spend in your happy place.

SUMMER FINALLY!!!

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

H

OPEFULLY BY THE TIME you read this, you will have already had a few summer cocktails on an outdoor patio somewhere. As you are enjoying the long-awaited sunshine, get inspired by our Summer Issue. It’s time to shed our winter clothes and finally wear summer clothing: light, airy and

fresh.

It seems like everyone has a bounce in their step in summer. Especially the children. They are all so

excited that school is over and it’s time to play – all day! Time for water balloons, sprinklers and so much shenanigans in the name of summer vacation. My grandchildren are so very excited because now they get to spend more time with me. Which translates into now they can spend endless hours outdoors eating pizza and freezies, and running around uncontrolled through the sprinklers. Yes, that is summer! You may notice more polish and verve in this issue. That’s thanks to our new Art Director Jason Kang. Jason comes to us with a multitude of creative experience and we are fortunate to have such an experienced art director help us breath life and excitement into our pages. Now, with the addition of Jason to our already creative editorial team, stay tuned for even more exciting and dynamic issues to come. I don’t know about you, but I always long to lounge on my terrace on a hot Sunday afternoon with a cool cocktail and a good read. So, on a hot Sunday afternoon enjoy a cool cocktail and reach for our summer issue, get inspired and form a point of view! Let us know what your thoughts are about our new look and our articles. We are always interested in your input and ideas.

OPSON GRACE, the niche retail concept specializing in tableware and home accessories, opened a seasonal store in cottage country for the first time. Hopson Grace Muskoka is the Toronto-based retailer’s second store, having opened its doors in the Rosedale-Summerhill neighborhood in 2015. “From residents to cottagers and tourists from around the globe, Muskoka has established itself among the world’s most iconic summer retreats,” says Martha Grace McKimm, co-founder. “We’re excited to become a part of its vibrant community.” Located at 103 Maple Street in Port Carling, Hopson Grace will offer many of the same unique and exclusive brands sold in the retailer’s Toronto location, with a focus on more casual, seasonal offerings. This includes a new line of shatter-free dinnerware and glassware, along with other items perfect for lunch on the dock, cottage dinner parties and days out on the boat. New and exclusive to Muskoka is Mad et Len, a line of scented candles made in France’s Provencal mountains. The line’s hand-blended scents are derived from organic essential oils and encased in wrought-iron black steel apothecary bottles. Hopson Grace Muskoka will be open through the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. hopsongrace.com

YOUR COTTAGE This open-concept kitchen matches pale hues and high style hardware to natural wood-toned floors and beams.

OF THE 35 MILLION PEOPLE who reside in Canada, approximately 6 million own (or have familial access to) a cottage. And that cottage will be visited, on average, by 17.2 people (family and friends) each year. Appraising these figures (courtesy of Blue Ant Media, owners of Cottage Life TV) it’s fair to suggest that cottaging has become a wildly popular pastime for urbanites who long for a furtive dalliance with Mother Nature. So, you’d better hope your guest accommodation is up to the challenge: because plus ca change… Aye, the days have long gone since cottages, cabins and chalets (or however you choose to label your second home, according to geography) were little more than glorified storage vaults for old sofas, sideboards and carpets. On our watch, they’re

valuable

getaways,

not

just

somewhere to stash the detritus that’s no longer needed in one’s principal residence. Holiday homes, as we appraise them, certainly, should be joyous respites, places in which to discharge the stresses of an ever faster spinning world. Seriously: shouldn’t we all aspire to dispense with “one star” categorization and beckon in a “five star” experience at every turn? Come on…. But hold it: before Canada’s cottaging fraternity throws up its arms in defiant protest, we’re not advocating the removal of all things past, rather a considered edit of less important (and less attractive) items so that a modern, rewarding platform can become your happy reality.

by COLIN MCALLISTER + JUSTIN RYAN

DOES RUSTIC HAVE TO MEAN ROUGH? COLIN AND JUSTIN, WHO REFUSE TO SLUM IT, SAY NO. HERE’S THEIR GUIDE TO LUXING UP YOUR CABIN TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE, ESCAPIST RETREAT…

So be brave: bid a fond farewell to dried flowers, kitsch wallpaper, brown tiled kitchen counters and flock detailed, wolf depicting artwork (“What a howl” said nobody in recent times) and prepare to move forward. Aye, if your cabin sucks, we insist you make it luxe…

Open the cottage to the outdoors with windows.

REDISCOVER THE KITCHEN

We’ve long since advocated that the kitchen is the heart of the home and, in the rural context, this seems especially

20 LUXE MAGAZINE CANADA SUMMER 2019

relevant. With fewer nearby restaurants and bars to populate, the cottage kitchen is likely to be an important congregation point for family, friends and neighbours. But, of course, nobody wants to be shut away, so if possible – and in conjunction with a contractor and the local planning department – consider a little auspicious wall removal to create an open concept space. You know… one that provides the perfect stage upon which to showcase your Masterchef skills… while others gasp in veritable astonishment. Proffer a luxurious feel with quartz counters. Canadian-made HanStone produces some of the market’s best choices (hanstone.ca), matching brand appliances and, if you have space, a separate dry larder filled with gastronomic flights of fancy. This project was unlike many others says Berwick, as she was able to spend many uninterrupted hours with her client. “We would drive the five hours to the cottage, and she would tell me stories of her travels and adventures.” The Muskoka cottage is shared within the extended family, as the homeowners have four children and 11 grandchildren but still reflects the discerning eye of its matriarch. And thanks to the modern design taste of R-Star Developments’ Brent Armstrong, Berwick didn’t need to change details that usually need an upgrade, like overhead lighting and countertops. The revamped boathouse (aka guest house) offers a light-filled and streamlined design for visiting family or friends, taking a page from Chip and Joanna Gaines with the liberal use of shiplap on the walls. The white and gray two-storey space includes three bedrooms (the loft space is one bedroom accessed by a stair ladder, the other two are on the main level), small kitchen, family 24 LUXE MAGAZINE CANADA SUMMER 2019

Living WOULD YOU FLY IN AN UBER?

UBER ANNOUNCED Australia as the first international market for Uber Air, with Melbourne being selected as the third official pilot city. Melbourne joins Dallas and Los Angeles as pilot cities for the program, with test flights due to start in 2020. Taking Uber’s tech to the sky, Uber Air aims to open up urban air mobility, and help alleviate transport congestion on the ground. According to Uber, the vision is for safe, quiet electric vehicles transporting tens of thousands of people across cities for the same price as an UberX trip over the same distance. Susan Anderson, regional general manager for Uber in Australia, New Zealand and North Asia made the announcement at Uber’s global Elevate (Uber Air) Summit in Washington in early June. “Australian governments have adopted a forward-looking approach to ridesharing and future transport technology. This, coupled with Melbourne’s unique demographic and geospatial factors, and culture of innovation and technology, makes Melbourne the perfect third launch city for Uber Air. We will see other Australian cities following soon after.” Shown here: The Bell Nexus is one of several vehicles that will make up the Uber Elevate fleet. SUMMER 2019 LUXE MAGAZINE CANADA

NO SCREENS FOR KIDS UNDER 5 THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) issued strict new guidelines recently on one of the most anxiety-producing issues of 21st century family life: How much should parents resort to videos and online games to entertain, educate or simply distract their young children? The answer, according to WHO, is never for children in their first year of life and rarely in their second. Those aged 2 to 4, the international health agency said, should spend no more than an hour a day in front of a screen.

CHANGING

The City’s

WEST END TORONTO’S LATEST HANGOUT IS FOUND WITHIN REIMAGINED SHIPPING CONTAINERS by WAHEEDA HARRIS SOUTH OF THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT boom of King Street West, a former parking lot at Bathurst and Front Streets has become the neighbourhood’s newest modernist hangout. The new hot spot – Stackt Market – is not easy to label. Just opened in April, it’s made up of 120 used and new shipping containers; the dark grey boxes painted, piled and styled, adding a human-scale addition among numerous high rises. Designed by LGA Architectural Partners and constructed by Ellis Don, the metal containers provide 30,000 square feet of commercial space enhanced with windows and retractable glass curious from near and far. Four-and-a-half years ago Matt Rubinoff regularly walked by this barren 100,000 square foot space. Owned by the City of Toronto, the plot of land is destined to become a park but it’s in remediation for its former life as the site of an iron smelting plant, closed in the 1980s. As one of a growing population of residents calling the King West area home, Rubinoff was inspired to create something for his neighbourhood, and made a proposal to the city to create a new community hub. “I could see the growing need for the community to engage and connect.” Thanks to past travel, Rubinoff had seen how these industrial creations had been retrofitted into hotels, housing and showrooms and that they can easily be assembled, altered and dismantled. Stackt Market is not the first to transform shipping containers in Toronto: in 2010, Scadding Court Community Centre opened Market 707, a street food and retail market located at Dundas & Bathurst. Now they’ve become a Stackt partner, overseeing the on-site greenhouse and the outdoor community garden. Another neighbourhood connection has Stackt hiring

LANDSCAPE maintenance workers from Fort York Residence, a nearby shelter. What to expect when visiting Stackt Market? It’s a little bit of everything from dining to shopping, art to exercise – and it’s evolving. Early adopters of Stackt include Belgian Moon Brewery, offering four brews on tap brewed on-site; plant-based butcher YamChops; Jomo Studio featuring DIY workshops; sustainable prescription eyewear from Dresden Vision and sweet treats from Hamiltonexport Donut Monster. Fair trade and organic java is served daily from Reunion Coffee Roasters. Adidas is partnered with Flow Alkaline Spring Water to offer complimentary strength classes while BMO hosts a speaker series at its newest branch. Rubinoff’s goal for Stackt was not like typical mixed-used spaces; he didn’t want to populate the market with a static list of tenants. There are areas that can be rented for events, four spaces dedicated to pop-up endeavours of 45 days or less. They have welcomed marketing projects like The Endy Lodge, where visitors can try out a mattress (and instragram the relaxing effects) as well as short-term partnerships with annual events like The Stop Night Market and hosting an e-sports tournament with NXNE. Stackt also includes retail studios like Carmel Floral and inkbox Tattoos, Canadian-designed furniture at COFO Design, fashion from Sense of Independence and Ellie Mae and a mini-outlet of Indigo Books. Opening in June, the Pavilion will offer another unconventional option at Stackt: a 5,000 square-foot space that will be a kitchen/dining space, hosting a schedule of local chefs for short-term pop-ups as well as cooking classes. But it doesn’t stop there – kids programming, outdoor movie screenings, community partnerships and programs – Stackt aims to become embedded with Toronto’s King West neighbourhood and a destination for locals and visitors. Easily accessible by TTC, there’s also a rarity for downtown Toronto: on-site parking. For more info: stacktmarket.com

WOMAN SITS IN A LUSH CONSERVATORY surrounded by greenery, her hands clasped before her and her gaze softened toward the artist. Titled Madame Cézanne in the Conservatory, the artwork is a dreamy depiction of real-life muse Hortense Fiquet, wife to French post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne, a man who crafted over two dozen of her likenesses in the late nineteenth century. The portrait now hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but its effects are far reaching, for it acted as a springboard for the third and most recent Ciao Sea resortwear collection, Le Jardin de Madame Cézanne. “The collection is inspired by the impressionists [and post-impressionists] who were so good at painting mood,” says Ciao Sea’s founder Chelsea Chen (Ciao Sea/Chelsea, get it?), who unveiled the brand in summer 2018. Chen first saw the portrait five years ago and it had such an impact that she and her team of designers conceived a range of swimsuits, cover-ups, skirts and tops overflowing with

turn-of-the-century

nods.

aesthetic, the collection includes pieces such as a black mesh robe with corset detailing and floral embroidery, a swimsuit with sweetheart bustier and white lacing up one side and an intricate long-sleeved lace halter with cold-shoulder cutouts. Chen’s favourite item, the strapless bird-print body suit, is a pastel creation with painted florals splashed across a simple silhouette. The wow factor comes in the form of reflected fish that transform into birds along the torso of the suit. “The colour matching was a difficult task,” Chen says, but the final product was worth the effort and creates an effect similar to paint on the body. Plus, it seamlessly integrates the Asian motifs of Ciao Sea’s first collection, Femme Dynasty, into the European garden look of the most recent designs. Chen, who was born in China and moved to Canada when she was 16, travelled frequently as a child and became fascinated with culture, art and style from a young age. When assembling a vision board for Femme Dynasty, her debut collection, she looked to Chinese artwork and 42

“ I WANTED TO CREATE GARMENTS THAT COULD EASILY TRANSITION FROM TIME BY THE POOL TO DINNER.” garments – ultimately choosing to incorporate Chinese button knots typically found on cheongsams, koi fish and lotus flower prints, Chinese characters and kimono-style robes. Still available through ciaosea.com, the pieces offer a nod to Chen’s heritage and introduced the world to the theatricality of her luxe label. This cosmopolitan approach was central to the brand from day one. When Chen launched Ciao Sea in Toronto last year, she wanted to produce a line-up of clothing that provoked the feeling of “adventure and the excitement that comes with travelling,” she says. “Whenever I travel, the different kinds of cultural history that I encounter bring me inspiration for my collections. I hope that by wearing my pieces, women can feel transported to a different time and place.” Whether that be a garden in Aix-en-Provence or a stretch of sand on an island off China’s coast. In addition to Chen’s interest in infusing “modern design into classic styles” and “empowering wearers to take daring adventures through different cultures and eras,” Chen had a few other goals in mind. “My friends and I couldn’t find a brand that was suitable for different occasions,” she says. “I wanted to create garments that could easily transition from time by the pool to dinner.” As a result, many of the line’s beach cover-ups would look at home at a dinner party, while the swimsuits need only the addition of a skirt to move from pool lounger to cocktail bar. Chen also wanted every piece in her collections to have a level of detail not commonly seen in swimwear and resort attire. “The production facilities always tell us that we put in too much detail, which drives the cost up,” she says. “Obviously balancing quality with cost is very important, but I always work hard to keep all of those details in place.” ABOVE The strapless bird print bodysuit is one of Chen’s favourite pieces in the collection. It’s that attention to each element of creation and production that sets Ciao Sea apart, as well as its unique placement as a luxury resort-wear line in Canada – a country better known for its outerwear and leather goods than swimwear. “Globally, Canada gives off this feeling that it’s cold and icy,” Chen says. “But I want to send the message that it also has a hot, summery side.” And just because many Canadians live far from the ocean, doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the pleasures of elevated resort wear like the rest of the world. “Our collections don’t have to be worn at the beach or pool,” she says. “The lake is also a great setting.” In other words, whether you’re jet-setting to French Polynesia, sipping drinks next to a rooftop pool in Los Angeles or reading a book on your dock in Muskoka, it’s always a good time to journey afar through fashion. Though Ciao Sea is still in its infancy, Chen hopes to eventually broaden its scope to include menswear, kids clothing and resort-related products like hats and slippers. “I want Ciao Sea to become everybody’s go-to vacation wear for any destination close to a body of water,” she says. And more global inspiration is surely in the pipeline. For now, a delicate piece from Le Jardin de Madame Cézanne can transport its female wearers to a sunny garden in nineteenth century France – and impart the frisson of romance – no matter where they actually spend their summers.

THE LUXURY COLLECTION, part of Marriott International Inc., recently announced the opening of The Langley, a restored estate in the English countryside. Located just outside of London in the heart of Buckinghamshire’s vast Langley Park, The Langley offers 41 sumptuous bedrooms throughout two buildings: the grand and historic former hunting lodge of the third Duke of Marlborough and the adjacent Grade II-listed 18th century Brew House. Following an extensive sixyear, multi-million pound renovation, the property is now open as a hotel for the first time. Built between 1756 and 1760, the main Langley Park House is a grand Palladian mansion situated within iconic Lancelot “Capability” Brown-designed gardens. The refurbishment has allowed the historic, original features of the building to shine through, reflecting the natural setting of Langley Park alongside the refined elegance and grandeur of its heritage. waters broken by the backs of stately whales. And nowhere in the country

does reality so fully meet expectations as Desolation Sound, a secluded patch of deep water located at the northern part of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. The area is only accessible by boat or seaplane and has some of the most breathtaking views in Canada, while remaining unspoiled by large-scale business operations and overcrowding. But as word gets out about this hidden gem, a careful balance between growth and conservation are key to maintaining the pristine beauty that makes Desolation Sound worth the trek. Change to the Sunshine Coast, especially the northern end, may be slow due to limited accessibility, but the region has seen an increase in visitor numbers as more and more people seek out authentic experiences in the wild. John Hermsen, co-owner of Footprint Nature Explorations kayak and hiking tours, moved to the Sunshine Coast from the Netherlands 13 years ago because he fell in love with the “fjord-like landscape with steep mountain walls rising up from the ocean.” Now, he says that visitors are drawn to the quiet, as well as the element of surprise that being in the Canadian wilderness offers. “Of course, we have big whales and bears,” he says. “But I always find it rewarding that I can awe people with a sea star and show them the small things that matter.” Michelle Zutz, co-owner of Townsite Brewing in nearby Powell River, sees the growth in tourism as purely positive because it means sustenance for existing local businesses, as well as better opportunities for new boutique eateries, coffee roasters and breweries. Plus, she says that most of the tourists that visit are “like-minded to locals and respect our trails and beaches, businesses and people.” Whether they’re drawn to the scenic hiking trails, majestic wildlife or what Zutz calls the “relaxed coastal vibe,” the region is remote enough that “it’s not a place people stumble upon,” she says. “It’s a destination, planned and saved for,” which means that visitors tend to leave the place the way they found it. More tourism also translates to more jobs, plus potential support for the local First Nations population. Aleata Vanstone, a young Wet’suwet’en woman and grizzly guide with Khlahoose Coastal Adventures, learned of the many mutually beneficial relationships that exist between Sunshine Coast business owners and indigenous people when she was taking the Aboriginal Ecotourism Training Program through Vancouver Island University. “It’s very important to most local businesses to work with the First Nations because they feel like they won’t be ethical or successful if they don’t,” she says. “ AS A STRING OF SMALL COASTAL COMMUNITIES WITH LIMITED INFRASTRUCTURE, OUR TOURISM OPPORTUNITY IS IN HIGH-VALUE “BOUTIQUE” TOURISM, NOT IN VOLUME.” Although many First Nations and Sunshine Coast locals welcome expansion of the tourism industry, higher volumes of people in an area with limited infrastructure can also pose problems. “The tourism industry puts a huge demand on our water supply in the summer when we just don’t have any to spare,” says Daniel Bouman, board director of Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA). The main source of water for the Sunshine Coast regional district is the Chapman watershed in Tetrahedron Provincial Park, which is protected by Class A park status. “The regional district undertook a drive to [revoke the status] and double the water supply by taking more water out of the park,” he says. “They wanted to degrade the source area by pumping the biggest lake by an extra 24 feet.” The region also sees large-scale businesses trying to take over swathes of land while showing little regard for the environment, so the SCCA has to spend a great deal of time fighting proposals that aim to commercialize the Sunshine Coast. “The public is going to have to be pretty on top of it if we’re all going to keep tourism from being exploited by highly industrialized operations,” Bouman says. To address some of these concerns, the Sunshine Coast Region, in partnership with Destination B.C., created a 10-year development strategy. “As a string of small coastal communities value “boutique” tourism, not in volume,” says Paul Kamon, Sunshine Coast Tourism’s executive director. “We want to make sure that, as we increase demand with marketing, we are also working with our local and provincial governments on infrastructure upgrades that support the higher volumes and enhance the visitor experience.” As a business owner, Hermsen is a huge supporter of this strategy. “We would rather have fewer visitors that have a good impression and become advocates for our region,” he says. “Of course we want to make a living, which means we need people here, but we can focus on the kind of traveller that we want to attract and aim for quality more than quantity.”

WHAT TO SEE, DO AND EAT ON A VACATION IN REMOTE DESOLATION SOUND, B.C.

STAY

Book a three-to-five-day tour with Pacific Coastal Cruises & Tours (coastalcruises.ca) and call Homfray Lodge (homfraylodge.com) home. After a few leisurely hours cruising through secluded waters from Lund, you’ll be filled with awe when you reach the Homfray’s dock, which sits perched on the edge of a mountainous forest.

DO

Take a day to see the grizzly bears up close with Klahoose Coastal Adventures (klahoosecoastaladventures.com) at Toba Inlet – an excursion that’s included in some Pacific Coastal Cruises & Tours packages – then explore the area by boat or kayak and search for wildlife like orcas, humpback whales, seals, jellyfish and porpoises. After dark, head out to Homfray Lodge’s dock to stargaze and test the water for bioluminescence, which looks like fireflies flitting under the surface. Once back in Powell River, take a small-group hiking tour with Footprint Nature Explorations (footprintbc.ca) and behold the breathtaking vistas that make up the 180 kilometres of the Sunshine Coast Trail.

EAT

Though you may spend much of your trip at a wilderness lodge, plan for a little extra time to enjoy the food in Lund and Powell River. Stop at Nancy’s Bakery for fluffy cinnamon buns, Little Hut Curry for authentic Indian flavour and Coastal Cookery (coastalcookery. com) for an extensive menu crafted with local ingredients.

DRINK

Pop in to Townsite Brewery (townsite brewery. com) for a locally brewed beer like Tin Hat (IPA), Zunga (golden blonde ale) or Zwarte Wheat (Belgian dark witbier), then plunk down at the long table and visit with the local sitting next to you.

Rosé ALL DAY by MICHAEL PINKUS

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. The weather is starting to get warmer, and we’re taking our favourite outdoor furniture outside, plunking it down where it’ll get the most sun exposure and readying ourselves for limited time outdoors. As Ontarians, we know July and August are our main outdoor months and they need to be savoured. That all said, every year I write in glowing terms about dry rosé, a real up-and-comer in the wine world. After years of living in a sad kind of limbo and obscurity rosé has found a new lease on life as the summer beverage of choice for many, and not just the female and trendy set, as has been depicted in popular culture. It has become a real summertime, sit on the patio of your choice sipper

ROSÉS TO GET, SEARCH OR ORDER TO MAKE YOUR SUMMER BETTER …

CHATEAU DE BERNE 2018 ROMANCE

France; $19.99, consignment The name seems to be one of those hokey things you want to avoid, but actually this one really is a delicious little limeraspberry number with a hint of orange blossom on the finish. ✰✰✰ +

MAS DES BRESSADES 2018 CUVEE TRADITION ROSÉ

France; $16.95, #950576 A little deeper in colour than the trending rosés on the shelves, but that might explain the mainly strawberry and lime notes, and while it has a short finish, it is very tasty. ✰✰✰

BODEGAS IZADI 2018 LARROSA ROSÉ

Spain; $16.95, #490961 This was a real winner for me last year and it’s come around again this year: nice dry palate with orange, lemon-lime, raspberry and cranberry. Pick this one up by the six pack because it’ll go fast. ✰✰✰ +

REDSTONE WINERY 2018 ROSÉ

Ontario; $17.95, winery and available June 2019 at LCBO Two years ago, Redstone made my top rosé list and they’re back again. This fruity version ends dry, but has a mid-palate loaded with raspberry, strawberry and melon – great balancing act here. ✰✰✰ +

MALIVOIRE 2018 LADYBUG ROSÉ

Ontario; $16.95, #559088 What started out as a sweet rosé has been getting drier with each passing year, and that’s a great thing. Cherry, raspberry, lime with a bitter melon finish; cheerful and so easy to drink. ✰✰✰ +

HENRY OF PELHAM 2018 ROSÉ

Ontario; $14.95, #613471 This great value rosé from Ontario should be picked up by the case. Pretty and floral from the get go, then it adds in melon, raspberry and cherry – sweet fruit but there’s a lovely long finish hit with acidity that takes it to the dry side. ✰✰✰

✰✰✰✰✰ = Outstanding ✰✰✰✰ = Excellent ✰✰✰✰ = Very Good ✰✰✰ = Good + The wine offers a bonus but not enough to go to the next level.

WAYNE GRETZKY 2018 ROSÉ

Ontario; $16.95, winery only A first from Gretzky and something you should really make a trip to the winery for: lime, lemon, raspberry, strawberry, melon rind and even some herbal notes. ✰✰✰ +

MELDVILLE 2018 CABERNET FRANC ROSÉ

Ontario; $20, Legends Winery Huge strawberry with a subtle bitter-ish herbal note; good hint of lime on the finish … very summer. First rosé I tried this year and still memorable. ✰✰✰ +

CREEKSIDE 2018 ROSÉ

Ontario; $15.95, #48819 A real blast of refreshment with a hit of wild cherry, along with the balance of

beets, cranberry and citrus. The beet may be jarring, but it fits right in, trust me. ✰✰✰+

LEANING POST 2018 ROSÉ

Ontario, $20, winery only Not often do you get this kind of complex rosé, but this Leaning Post delivers on so many levels: herbal, melon, cherry and more. Very drinkable and refreshing. This is a ‘just can’t get enough’ rosé. ✰✰✰✰

WESTCOTT VINEYARDS 2018 PINOT NOIR ROSÉ

Ontario; $22.95, winery only A 100 per cent lightlycoloured pinot noir that’s dry with floral, cherry-raspberry and lime – even shows some stone fruit and grapefruit on the finish. Westcott’s new winemaker nails this one. ✰✰✰✰

SEVEN HILLS 2018 ROSÉ

Washington, order from winery Tried this while in Washington State and was blown away, considering the rest of the rosés during the trip were quite lackluster. Cherryraspberry with intense lime and a bolt of acidity that jars the palate awake – this is serious west coast rosé. ✰✰✰ +

CULMINA 2018 R&D ROSÉ

British Columbia, $19, order from winery Worth reaching out to the winery for delivery to your door. Floral, citrus, raspberry with a hint of grapefruit on the finish, and lime zest for freshness; don’t let this one pass you by. ✰✰✰ +

different red grape varietals, but mostly pinot noir, the others just add some much-needed depth. Strawberry, lime kick things off, adding in peach and some grapefruit pith on the finish plus a bitter note that helps dry out that fresh fruit. ✰✰✰ +

BANROCK STATION 2018 PINK MOSCATO

Australia, $11.95, #170134 For those who want to stray to the sweet side … in the past this has been a sweet mess, but this year they seem to have nailed that moscato d’asti vibe with ginger ale, sweet pear and pineapple notes that good moscato should have and because it’s rosé there’s a dash of raspberry too. ✰✰✰+

In the late ’90s, the party stopped when new owners converted the building into a Howard Johnson Hotel. of Canada shortlist

THE ROYAL ARCHITECTURAL INSTITUTE OF CANADA (RAIC) recently announced the shortlist for the 2019 RAIC International Prize for socially transformative architecture. One Canadian firm — Hariri Pontarini Architects, of Toronto — achieved a spot on the shortlist of projects. A six-member jury chose a university building in Peru, an artists’ residence and cultural centre in Senegal, and a Baha’i Temple in Chile. The biennial prize was founded in 2013 and is open to architects from anywhere in the world. “We see in these exceptional buildings how architecture can strengthen community, bring together diverse peoples, lift the spirit, and exist in harmony with the environment,” says RAIC President Michael Cox. “Each of these projects offers lessons that can be applied elsewhere, and we hope they will inspire architects around the world as they design for human well-being.” Hariri Pontarini’s project – Baha’i Temple of South America – is designed to be a place of welcome and meaning for everyone. Its design has attracted more than 1.4 million visitors since opening in fall 2016. The temple is composed of nine cast-glass and marble wings, achieving a sense of weightless movement, light, and at the same time permanence. At the edge of the Andes, it was built to withstand a rugged climate and an earthquake zone. Its 14-year realization involved hundreds of local volunteers and a global effort, including fabrication in Canada and Germany, marble from a Portuguese quarry, and Chilean tradespeople. The prize winner will be unveiled at a gala in Toronto in October. SUMMER 2019 LUXE MAGAZINE CANADA

A RECENT SHOW, VANESSA MCKERNAN

LEARNED something powerful about her painting and herself. When McKernan finished With Child and Roses, she hung it sideways to dry on her studio wall, without even looking at it. Even though the large three-feet by five-feet, oil and graphite painting was something she worked on throughout the course of two weeks, she really hadn’t thought about it. “I have a two-year-old and it’s the first time in my life being a mother and parenting, so I was always trying to make a piece of art about the experience, but it never worked out. Every time I went to do it, it just never fit,” McKernan says. With the Artist Project, an annual contemporary art show approaching, she framed the painting, and then hung it on display. On the fourth day of the exhibit, a woman came by to inquire about With Child and Roses. “We started talking about the piece. It was sort of unusual because she had the same last name as me, although we’re not related. I’m related to most of the McKernans in Toronto and I was surprised by that,” she explains. “The woman asked why I made this reflection on being a mother, and I was telling her a little bit about it and how I love painting big messy crowds in the background. In an off-handed comment, she said she saw something different; she thought my painting is about the woman carrying her inner child. She was right,” reveals McKernan. “I almost burst into tears because she really saw something that I could not, and I didn’t see: the truth in the piece, the under layer you’re not always aware of as an artist.” McKernan explores different parts of the self and mind in her work. She examines social interactions of people and observes behaviour on an unconscious level, as seen in her paintings Waking Up, Two Riders, Through Tall Grass, and Burial for a Cat. “I believe painters and creative people are connecting to something larger outside of themselves,” she explains. “This doesn’t always happen in the process of being in your studio and working and painting, but occasionally truths are revealed about yourself and about the world that you maybe wouldn’t get to any other way but through the piece.” Vanessa grew up in a family of eight children with music at the forefront of their lives. Her father was a musician and wrote musicals. He loved to play songs from musical theatre and from SUMMER 2019 LUXE MAGAZINE CANADA 65
