We say this when we are amazed, surprised, impressed, incredulous, and even, at times, when we’re disgusted. All these emotions can come into play when considering our hair, cosmetics, and wardrobes. The interpretation of the expression can depend on if we are observing ourselves as a before (just wow…jeans don’t button, zit on chin, bangs too flat) or an after (wow!...no muffin top, clear skin, good hair day).
It goes without saying—but we’re gonna say it— that “Wow” is the word of the month for our May Beauty & Style issue. Feeling good goes hand in hand with looking good, according to our cover feature Leslie Lee, RN and owner of Aesthetic Creator in North Mankato. A firm believer in education, Lee’s background runs the gamut from dental surgery, nursing, and fitness, to Botox and other injectables. One of her goals is to dispel the negativity that can surround enhancement products and procedures, and looks at it as a way to put a positive face on the future.
This column’s name, “Lather, Rinse, Repeat,” is an homage to the instructions that used to be on backs of shampoo bottles for as long as I can remember. It’s also a metaphor for what happens in life: do this, do that, do it again. I had the phrase ear marked for my all-girl rock band, but when that didn’t pan out it seemed like the perfect fit for all the things I write about. Shampoos were an obsession for my sister and me back in the 1970s. Oh, the joys of perusing the drug store shelves for the original fragrance Herbal Essence, or Lemon Up with its cool plastic lemon bottle top, and of course, Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific, which speaks for itself.
Making sure you never have a bad hair day, especially on your big day, is Grissel Hintz. Owner of Hairstyles by Grissel, she brings beauty services directly to your event venue. The comfort and
peace of mind this brings to her customers is one less thing for them to have to think about or travel time worries. Grissel offers a trial hairdo or two prior to the wedding so there are no surprises at the unveiling, only wows.
Defining your own personal wow factor is a process. Style has more to do with fitting one’s personality than literally fitting. Sometimes it helps to have a style idol. Mine, over the years has been a mixture of Ellen Degeneres and gap-toothed supermodel Lauren Hutton. Perhaps yours is Taylor Swift, Hailey Bieber, or maybe even a sibling or friend you admire. Over the last few decades I’ve tended to lean towards gender-neutral attire with a dash of quirk here and there. Never have I ever worn high heels. They’re just not in my DNA (Do Not Attempt). Many times I’ve headed to the dressing room filled with hope about a particular clothing item, only to quickly deflate once I try it on, because I didn’t pay attention to my DNA.
The philosophical maxim “Know thyself” could be style-writer Jess Blais’s mantra. Her essay encourages us to have a conscious closet. In other words, learn who you are and your fashion sense will follow. Who hasn’t gazed into the abyss of their over-stuffed dressers and declared they have nothing to wear? Jess suggests that you shift your mindset and look inward instead. Who are you, what is the impact of your purchases? Shop intentionally.
It can be a head scratcher figuring out all the product ingredients we hear and read about. But Melanie Kittleson, owner of Schöne Haut, trusts the science. From Retinol and Hyaluronic acid, to Hydroquinone and Revitalash, she knows her multi-syllable beauty concoctions, and how they can benefit us, no matter what our age. We may not be able to pronounce them all, but word on the street is wow!
We hope you’re just wowed by this issue, and are inspired to get some skin in the game. Be mindful, get educated, and embrace your inner supermodel. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Leslie Lee has a mission of not just helping people look good, but feel good. Through her work in aesthetics, Lee not only helps enhance people’s outward appearance, but also listens to their questions and concerns with compassion and care to ensure that their brain health is on par with the rest of them.
Lee is the owner of Aesthetic Creator in North Mankato and is also an RN and Aesthetic Injector at Mesna Plastic Surgery. Her journey to get to where she is took a lot of steps and self-reflection to determine what it was she wanted to achieve and offer others.
She grew up on a farm in Minnesota, near Elysian, as one of six children in her family and the oldest girl.
“Naturally caretaking falls under that. Not only cooking and cleaning, but also doing farm stuff like picking rocks and walking beans,” Lee said.
She believes that growing up with that kind of daily routine has added to the strong work ethic she has now as an adult.
She began taking post-secondary classes for cosmetology as a high schooler, graduated high school in May, and cosmetology school just two months later in July.
“I wanted to help people feel better. At the end of the day, we can say that we don’t care about our looks, but you still pick your clothes out in the morning and you still get your hair cut. There’s always a sense of self-care,” Lee said.
Upon graduating cosmetology school, Leslie started off doing the basics of hair and makeup for a few years. Then she decided to go back to school for a one year program to become a dental assistant.
“I worked in oral surgery for five years,” she said.
Lee recalled that the first time she went to get Botox and lip fillers, she was amazed with how much it enhanced her looks and how pleased she was with the results.
“I remember talking to the lady, Connie Brennan, who did my injections. I said to her, ‘I want to do this.’ I had no real interest in actual medicine or working in a hospital, but as a nurse I wanted to do that,” Lee said.
By that point Lee was married with two children at home and a six week old, but she quit her full-time job in order to go back to school yet again.
“I went back to nursing school, which can be terribly hard, but you can do it,” Lee said.
Lee began working with Lifetime Fitness, where Brennan is head of training. About three years later, she started working at Mesna Plastic Surgery in St. Louis Park.
I approach aesthetics by figuring out what’s bothering people and coming up with an intentional plan to treat it.”
“He’s a really well-known plastic surgeon in the Cities,” Lee said of Dr. Gregory T. Mesna, with whom she has worked for nearly 10 years, while also pursuing some of her own endeavors.
Leslie has again returned to school to become a nurse practitioner after developing an interest in hormones. She is slated to finish late this summer.
“Every time I have gone back to school, there’s always been a purpose in mind. I’ve done it for different reasons and it’s always intentional, which I think is important,” Lee said.
In February of 2023, Lee made another big move when she opened Aesthetic Creator in North Mankato—something she had been considering for quite some time. She shared that there’s really no certification or mandatory training required to give injections, but it’s something she’s obtained on her own and she also offers her own training sessions for others.
“It’s fun. You have happy patients coming to see you who are not sick, but it’s hard in a different way because you have to be

emotionally on,” Lee said of listening to patients and making them feel comfortable and safe while giving injections.
She said there can be a negative perception of aesthetics that she feels is not true, and that her philosophy is that you can age intentionally.
“You can look at your mom, dad, aunts and uncles, and know how you’re going to age. You might have your mom’s eyes or your
dad’s nose—everyone knows what they’re going to look like if they pay attention.”
For her personally, Lee said she knew she had gotten her dad’s forehead lines so she chose to be proactive and treat them so they wouldn’t get worse.
“I approach aesthetics by figuring out what’s bothering people and coming up with an intentional plan to treat it,” Lee explained.
While it’s never too late to get started, the expectations, both in terms of results and cost, are something that need to be communicated to people so she makes sure to be transparent with patients.
“I feel like I make more of an impact because I’m building trusting relationships. That’s what true medicine is about I think. It’s about taking the time to listen and understand what someone is looking for,” Lee said.
While she may be treating a line or wrinkle, at the end of the day, 90 percent of aesthetes is treating emotions, according to Lee.
“If we have frown lines, we look angry. If we have marionette lines around our mouths we look sad. Sad, mad and tired are generally negative emotions, and people don’t want to look like that,” she pointed out.
While her passion for aesthetics is apparent, Lee has many other interests. Not only does she have her own clinic, she also owns several other businesses.
In 2022, she and her husband, Jacob, opened Ahavah Cottage, a successful wedding venue in Elysian which includes an outdoor ceremony space in the woods and an indoor ceremony space.
“We renovated the whole thing, and this is our second full year of weddings,” Lee said. They’re currently working on adding 10 total hotel rooms adjacent to the property which are expected to be finished early this summer.
Leslie herself was very involved in all aspects of the venue in the first year.
“I like to learn. I feel like nothing really is above me,” she said. However, she has since hired someone to manage many of the operations there though she remains heavily involved on the back end of things. In fact, one of the things she enjoys doing is finding people with the same passions and drive to work for her.
In addition to opening Ahavah Cottage in Elysian, Leslie and Jacob, along with family members Dylan and Hannah Sheehy, took over as owners of Mama’s Mercantile, a bakery in Elysian, in March of this year.
“The lady who owned it had posted it on LoopNet— I’m always searching for a new idea or property— and I found it and called her,” Leslie recalled.
She was interested because baking has always been a side passion and way of relaxing for her.
“I always wanted a bakery, without the pressure of a bakery,” Lee said with a laugh. Because she lacked the time to take on more herself, Lee was able to find a baker who she believed would be a good fit and together they developed recipes. Jacob did a whole remodel over the winter, and when the bakery officially opened under the new owners in the spring, it did so with a new menu.
“My oldest daughter is gluten and dairy free, and it’s so hard to go to restaurants to find something that actually tastes good,” Lee explained.
She has been creating special items for her daughter, and she is now proud to offer these tried and true recipes at Mama’s Mercantile.
Having the two businesses is satisfying to her personally, but Leslie also likes that they contribute to boosting the local economy. She shared that a liquor store and bait shop have since opened up in Elysian, too.
“Other people are bringing in businesses to help really grow the town,” Leslie said.
In everything she does, whether it’s providing a wedding venue to help a couple celebrate their special day, offering baked goods to bring people enjoyment, or providing a service to help someone feel their personal best, Leslie is all about boosting confidence.
“In the beauty industry, there’s a brain health piece that’s very important, and as a provider, you have to be passionate and be okay with having some hard conversations,” Lee said.
She said someone could be going through a divorce or just had a baby and as a
provider she’s tasked with figuring out if people are seeking a service to cope or make themselves feel better.
Lee shared that she had a brother who died by suicide, and reiterated that the brain health part of beauty is something she takes seriously.
“If your brain is not healthy, you will never see yourself as beautiful. I’m very in tune to brain health in general because I’ve been through that journey, and I’ve seen what stress can do to our bodies as a whole,” she said. “The health of the brain affects the body and there is nothing more satisfying than sitting with a patient and having a conversation to make them feel heard and seen. That’s super beneficial to someone’s brain health.”
She’s sensitive to the perception that aesthetics is all about vanity, and seeks to change this misconception by educating people, and empower others to take charge of what they want and vocalize it. Even though everyone ages, there are steps that can be taken to help people as they grow and change.
“If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. I think about what tools I have to help others look and feel their best.” RVW

GRISSELHINTZ BRINGINGBEAUTYTOYOU
By CHRISTINE NESSLER
“I get to see all these amazing venues, go to different places, and meet different people all the time. It’s never the same. It’s always new, so it keeps it exciting. “
Weddings and special events are stressful, there’s no doubt about it. With all the planning that goes into someone’s big day, whether that’s a wedding, prom, or Quinceanera, the last thing a person needs to worry about is getting to their hair appointment on time.
With her business, Hairstyles by Grissel, Grissel Hintz takes the stress out of clients looking their best by bringing her services directly to her English and Spanish-speaking clients at either their home or their event venue. Providing on-site services for special events has benefited Hintz as well, allowing for new and exciting challenges, personal flexibility, travel, and more personal connections with clients.
For more than eleven years, Hintz has been working as a stylist. She trained at Regency Beauty School in Burnsville. Always gravitating more to styling hair than cutting or coloring, she started her career at Blast Blow Dry Bar at the Mall of America.
After Hintz and her husband, Alex, had their daughter Esther, Hintz went to work for a photography studio helping her clients look their best for the camera. She immediately knew this was the work she wanted to do.
“I realized I was headed in the right direction,” said Hintz. “Styling and makeup.”
Her next career stop was at Luminous Beauty, a wedding company focusing on special event hair and makeup, as well as make-up lessons and in-salon spa experiences. Hintz appreciated the business model of taking services to clients. Betsey McKenzie, the owner of Luminous Beauty, became a mentor to Hintz and taught her about running a business.
In 2019, Hintz started Hairstyles by Grissel. The unique concept of bringing her styling services to her clients provides them peace of mind in a comfortable setting. All Hintz requires in their space is a big table and access to electrical outlets. She provides the rest from styling equipment all the way down to lights and extension cords.
Barbara Ann Tuma found out first-hand just how important that peace of mind could be on the day of her wedding last July at North Star Farm in LeSueur.
“My soon-to-be husband and I had started off our wedding day morning stranded on the side of the road with a blown-out tire. Needless to say, I was a ball of stress,” said Tuma. “It was nice knowing I could count on her (Hintz) to make sure we all would have amazing hair, do it in a timely manner, and do quality work.”
“I don’t want the bride to be stressing the day of the wedding. That’s the reason I do on-site,” said Hintz. “I want to make sure the day is smooth as can be and you feel like you are the best you.”
Hintz ensures everything runs smoothly on the day of the event by doing trial runs with her customers prior to the big day. The trial can take place at the clients’ home or at Vida Salon Suites in Mankato, where Hintz does some consultations. Between hair and makeup, the trial usually lasts from two to three hours.
“If you’re unsure what you want, we definitely need to do a trial,” said Hintz. “We try at least one or two styles just to make sure that you choose the right one.”
Many customers will bring in an image of their hair or makeup inspiration. It is helpful if the expectations are realistic. According to Hintz, hair colors and textures can make a difference for a style so clients should find pictures of styles made from similar hair types. From there she can execute her best version of the style.

Powder Play: The best product for volume.
Spray Wax: Gives your hair grip. Spray your hair with spray wax before curling.
Volume: When you tease your hair, do it in small sections and really push the comb all the way down to the scalp, then smooth out any spots fuzzy from the back combing.
Spray Wax : To help with flyways, spray your hair with spray wax and then comb it.
Shampoo: Choose products with extra hydration.
Updos: Dark hair doesn’t show detail as well. Use a shine spray to enhance details.

Even better than a photo is just spending time with the client on a regular day, giving Hintz an idea of their personal style and preferences. Hintz said most clients want to still look like themselves on their big day and so she considers what they like, how they do their hair on a regular basis, etc. She also takes into consideration if a client has any problem areas they want addressed so she can accentuate their best features.
“Beforehand we had done a trial of my wedding day hair at my home, so she (Hintz) was able to get straight to work,” said Tuma. “I absolutely loved the way my hair turned out! It turned out better than the trial and was nothing short of perfection! She’s absolutely amazing at what she does and has so much talent!”
In addition to serving customers for a variety of special events, Hintz has partnerships with modeling agencies and photographers in Minnesota. One of her partnerships is with wedding photographer Ashley Beckman, Owner of Ashley Beckman Photography.
“Grissel was amazing to work with and very talented,” said Beckman. “Our bride looked absolutely stunning, and her hair was perfect all day! She provided great customer service and care. She made sure not a hair was out of place before leaving. I had such a great experience working with her that I have recommended her to many brides of mine.”
Focusing on these on-site services has allowed for a lot of variety in Hintz’ career. Because of this, Hintz works hard to stay abreast of the latest trends in hair and makeup. Personal growth and continuing education are passions for her.
“What I love most about serving my clients is the excitement when they see the end results,” said Hintz. “There’s nothing better than having them feel amazing and that truly brings me joy. It pushes me to keep growing and improving my skills.”
According to Hintz, this commitment to education has opened doors for her by giving her clients the chance to express themselves in exceptional and creative ways.
“I bring the option of doing different, unique styles for my clients,” said Hintz. “That’s the thing that sets me apart. I know how to do a lot of different styles.”
Overall, Hintz says her style is clean and airy. She encourages potential clients to always look at a stylist’s portfolio to understand the stylist’s taste and capabilities. As someone who
loves all forms of art, Hintz appreciates that hairstyles are a form of self-expression so she wants her clients to have options.
“Hairstyles show who you are,” said Hintz. “Which is why I like the trials, because it gives me a chance to see their vibe.”
Providing on-site styling services has not only set her a part in the wedding and beauty services industry, but it has also benefited her personally. Her new business was just what her family needed, providing flexibility in their busy lives. The Hintz family lives in Mapleton, Minnesota. During the week Hintz spends much of her time caring for her daughter and their many pets: seven cats, two dogs, and one lizard to be exact. On the weekend she focuses on her clients.
“I get to be home all week,” said Hintz. “It gives me the opportunity to take my daughter to school and be at all her activities during the week. Then my husband is off on the weekend, so he takes over.”
Providing on-site services means Hintz never stays in one place long, another perk of the job. She travels all over southern Minnesota for her clients, many of whom are in the Twin Cities.
“I love it because I get to travel,” said Hintz. “I get to see all these amazing venues, go to different places, and meet different people all the time. It’s never the same. It’s always new, so it keeps it exciting.”
Finally, she enjoys the feeling of comfort clients have in their own homes, something that has helped create lasting relationships with former clients.
“It feels more personal, like we’re friends, because it’s in their house,” said Hintz. According to Hintz, when her customers are more relaxed, they can talk to her like a friend. They are also comfortable enough to be honest with her, something very important to Hintz. “I want to make sure they love what they are getting.”
As Hintz reflects on her eleven years in the beauty industry, she is most happy about her personal growth as a stylist.
“All the work that I have put in has made a difference with my styling,” said Hintz. “I love seeing that growth. I always want to feel like I am getting better and better.”
Moving forward, Hintz plans to continue to put in the work of learning and growing as a stylist, help others interested in the beauty industry by teaching classes, focus more on styling brides, and grow her business throughout southern Minnesota. RVW

BOOK YOUR
YOUR CONSCIOUS CLOSET DEFINING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
By JESS BLAIS
Everyone has a personal style. Simply put, it is your distinctive appearance. The clothes you wear tell a story. A story about you—they are part of your identity. Your clothes are an outward reflection of how you feel on the inside. Style is truly about the way you feel in your clothes and embracing a style that feels like you. But, HOW do you learn? That’s the million dollar question, and my favorite mystery to solve.
First, we have to understand why our closets are overflowing but we still struggle to find something to wear? I am intimately familiar with this situation because it used to describe my closet. It happened because I shopped too much. I love clothes and convinced myself (with the help of continuous advertising messages and a fashion industry that produces way too much inventory), that I constantly needed to buy new clothes. I bought clothes when I was sad, when I was bored, when I was going to an event, when something was on sale, when something looked cute on the mannequin, when I saw something on social media… you get the idea. Yet, this constant stream of incoming pieces didn’t equate to more options because I didn’t know what I liked or what I needed in my closet to build a wardrobe that works.
While I am not aiming to be yet another voice in the never-ending arena of self improvement, I do know that understanding your unique personal style will simplify the process of shopping and getting dressed. In turn, helping you create a closet that works for your life. Which means you can buy less and wear what you have for years to come.
Real change started happening for me when I shifted my mindset. I started considering the impact of my purchases. Not only on my own energy and budget, but also on the environment and the people who were making the clothes. When I quit thinking of clothes as disposable, the idea of a conscious wardrobe began to materialize. Now, I look at my clothes as tools and I shop much more intentionally. Because I have learned what I like and how to style my items in countless ways, I add pieces that I know will work with what I already have. I rarely struggle to find something to wear. This didn’t happen overnight. It took a desire to change my habits and a lot of curiosity to identify what types of clothes feel like me
Personal style looks different for everyone. When you have words that describe your desired style, it simplifies the process of selecting pieces that work for your wardrobe. With this method, you can
appreciate an article of clothing while recognizing that it may not fit your style. This makes it easier to leave behind on the rack. New Yorkbased stylist Allison Bornstein coined the term ‘three-word method’ to help clients identify their personal aesthetic. Simply put, it’s identifying three adjectives that describe your style. I would like to offer some practical tips for finding those magic words. The best part, all you have to do is get dressed.
Here are three simple steps to find your personal style adjectives: Push pause on shopping for clothing for 60 days, including second hand clothing. Over the course of the 60-day shopping hiatus, snap a photo of your outfit each day. Then, take a moment to list three
RIVER VALLEY WOMAN | may • 2024 18
adjectives to describe each outfit and how you felt when you were wearing it.
Using an app like Pinterest, collect photos of style inspiration. Again, identify adjectives that describe the styles you like best. You are collecting data to narrow down your personal style adjectives.
Through this process you should arrive at 3-5 words that define the overall vibe you feel best in.
Once you have arrived at your adjectives you can begin to curate your closet. Let’s say your words are feminine, relaxed and minimal. You can weigh future purchases against these words to see if a piece will work for you. There are nuances and you can decide how hard and fast you want to play by these guidelines. And yes, your words can change over time. Identifying these adjectives is the first step to calming the closet chaos.
To me, personal style isn’t a destination. I am continuously learning and evolving. Over years of curating—rather than simply shopping—I have built a collection of pieces I cherish and intend to wear for years. I wish you joy on this journey of personal style discovery. BEING COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN MELANIE KITTLESON
Melanie Kittleson is owner of Schöne Haut, which means “beautiful skin” in German. She is a licensed esthetician and permanent makeup artist who specializes in an array of advanced skin care treatments, with the approach to achieve skin care goals and wellness for anyone and everyone. She serves New Ulm and other communities.
Tell us why you went in to the beauty business?
I have always had a passion for beauty and skincare. I love sharing my knowledge with clients, and the importance of maintaining healthy skin. It’s very rewarding knowing that I’ve provided a service that helped a client achieve their skin care goals/needs and to see them have confidence in their own skin!
What is an esthetician?
In short—a skin professional. My idea as an esthetician is to specialize in skincare treatments ranging from teen acne, to preventative aging, and how to maintain healthy skin with quality products.
What are some examples of science-based beauty products and ingredients?
I’m a firm believer in the professional products I use and trust. These products include PCA Skin, Glymed Plus, Face Reality, Circadia, and Colorscience and have proven, great results, in my experience. Retinol is a powerful ingredient to fight against aging skin. The benefits of Retinol help to increase collagen production, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, wrinkles and fine lines. Hyaluronic acid is also another key ingredient to keeping the skin plump, hydrated and it increases skin elasticity. Hyaluronic acid can help to treat eczema and facial redness. Another great ingredient to have in your skin care routine is Hydroquinone. This can help treat hyperpigmented skin conditions. Some common conditions Hydrquinone helps treat are age spots, melasma, freckles, and acne scars. It works to block production of melanin and even out the skin tone.
Should we use sun screen in makeup?
The sun is the most damaging to our skin, and I personally advise that SPF in makeup may not be sufficient enough to protect from UVA/UVB rays. It’s always best to use an SPF30 or more on a regular basis, in addition to reapplying sunscreen every 2-3 hours. An alternative to having SPF in your makeup would be to use a tinted sunscreen of SPF30 or more which will give you ample protection from UV rays.
How should the cosmetics and haircare products we use in summer differ from winter?
Even though we may not see the sun in the winter months, we know that UV rays are still harmful to our skin, and SPF is just as important to use throughout the winter months. Sometimes our skin can become duller and drier in winter due to the lack of moisture in the air, but adding more hydration into our skin care routine will help to retain more moisture within the skin.
What are some of your favorite tried and true cosmetics? Colorscience is my go-to for everything! It is formulated to give you protection from the sun but also provides hydration and a healthy glowy skin. I love how light the formulas feel on my skin, and it’s great for all ages and skin tones. Another one of my favorite staple cosmetics is Revitalash. Revitalash has greatly enhanced and strengthened my lashes, making them healthy and long!
Are there special make up tips for women in their 30s, 40s, 50+?
The first step is to have a skincare routine that preps your skin to get the most out of your makeup. Find a primer that is best suited based on your skin type. A primer can help to smooth out the skin and creates a base for your makeup to lay nicely. Ditching powder for cream-based makeup allows for a more glowing look and is less visible in wrinkles and fine lines. As we age, our face starts to change in appearance and contouring can be beneficial with framing and brightening the face in areas we may have lost density or areas we may have gained. Also as we age, our eyebrows become sparse. Filling them in with a brow pencil or powder that matches your brow color will allow the brow area to look lifted. Microblading and microshading are options for fuller and lifted eyebrows.
Is permanent makeup a better alternative than applying regular makeup?
Permanent makeup is a great alternative for people who are busy in their lives or for those who have physical limitations. It is low maintenance, saves time, and can also give you a desired look even throughout physical activities. The initial cost may seem high, but if you consider your time of applying and removing, along with the cost of purchasing makeup, it is definitely a great investment for yourself.

ANGUS STEAK SALAD
Total Time 30 min | Prep Time 15 min | Servings 4
Balsamic Vinaigrette
3 T aged white balsamic vinegar
1 T Hy-Vee Dijon mustard
1 T Hy-Vee honey
1 clove(s) garlic, minced
¼ tsp. Hy-Vee ground black pepper
¼ c. Hy-Vee Gustare Vita olive oil
Angus Steak Salad
1 lbs. Hy-Vee Angus Reserve beef
loin New York strip steaks
1 T Hy-Vee hickory House savory steak seasoning
2 ear(s) corn, thawed if frozen
1 (10-oz.) bag Hy-Vee Italian blend salad mix
2 avocados, seeded, peeled, and sliced
2 c. cherry tomatoes, halved
¼ medium red onion, cut into slices
¼ c. blue cheese crumbles
Prepare Balsamic Vinaigrette: Whisk together aged white balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, honey, garlic, and black pepper in a medium bowl. Slowly add olive oil, whisking continuously. Set aside.
Heat a charcoal or gas grill for direct cooking over medium-high heat. Pat steaks dry and season with steak seasoning.
Grill steaks for 10 minutes, turning once halfway through. Remove and cover with foil. Let stand for 5 minutes.
Grill ears of corn for 5 to 7 minutes or until charred, turning occasionally. Cool slightly. Cut kernels off cobs. Thinly slice steak against the grain.
Line dinner plates with salad mix. Top with steak and avocado slices, corn, tomatoes, red onion, and blue cheese. Drizzle with Balsamic Vinaigrette.
Just like shampoo and conditioner, a balanced diet of nutrient-rich foods is a must for any hair care routine.
Vitamins C and E, omega-3 fats, iron, protein, B vitamins such as biotin, and other nutrients help keep hair strands strong and promote growth and fullness while maintaining moisture levels. Thinning hair or hair loss may be a sign of deficiency in one or more of these nutrients.
Boost your chances of a good hair day by filling your plate with these foods that promote healthy hair.
BIOTIN. this B vitamin is linked to thinning hair or hair loss. Biotin from eggs, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, tuna, and beef liver also plays an essential role in the production of keratin, a type of protein that makes up the hair.
OMEGA-3 FATS. Salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds contain omega-3 fats that may help keep hair lush and thick. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that regular consumption of omega-3 fats and antioxidants was effective against hair loss and improved hair density.
VITAMIN E. Vitamin E in avocado, almonds, pumpkin, asparagus, and mango is an antioxidant that helps fend off free radicals and damage from oxidative stress. Free radicals are unstable atoms that cause oxidative stress and cell damage and have been linked to hair loss.
VITAMIN C. Found abundantly in bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, red cabbage, citrus fruits and strawberries, vitamin C makes it easier for the body to absorb iron and has strong antioxidant properties to help prevent cell damage.
FOODS THAT PROMOTE HEALTHY HAIR
Hair is made of protein, so an adequate amount of protein from sources like beef, poultry, fish, dairy, beans, quinoa, and nuts is necessary to stimulate growth. A lack of protein in the diet may result in thinning hair or hair loss.
Spinach, carrots, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes are strong sources of vitamin A, which helps produce sebum. A naturally occurring oil, sebum helps maintain moisture throughout the body, including the scalp.
Good sources of iron are beans, fortified breakfast cereals, and shellfish. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition in which the body lacks an adequate amount of red blood cells to effectively carry oxygen throughout the body, which can lead to hair loss.
ZINC. This mineral, found in oysters, beef, tofu, lentils, and oatmeal, encourages oil production to prevent hair from drying out. A diet severely lacking zinc may lead to hair loss.
Shingrix is more than 90% effective for people 50 years and older.
Even if you received the Zostavax shingles vaccine, Shingrix can dramatically reduce your risk. Plus, it’s covered by most insurance plans. Talk to your Hy-Vee pharmacist today.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Hopefully as you are reading this month’s column, the birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining down on you. For many, this time of year represents growth and the opportunity for a fresh start as we head into spring. What a perfect time to celebrate our mental health and wellness! I am excited to share that May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness month. This has been observed in the United States since 1949. Continuing to talk about mental health and having awareness around this topic will help to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. For a long time, discussion about mental health was considered taboo, leaving many people uncomfortable or scared to talk about their experiences. It is important to continue to prioritize discussions around what mental health is and how we can best support ourselves and others around us. The more we talk about it, the more we can normalize it and recognize how important it is.
Let’s chat about a few ideas to practice when working on maintaining positive mental health and wellness. First and foremost, I like to go back to the basics of eating well and staying hydrated, staying active and moving your body, and getting quality sleep. It is also important to stay connected with yourself and others, including socializing, limiting time on screens and social media, spending time outdoors in nature, and practicing regular self-care. Think about trying new activities or hobbies, learning more about areas that interest you, journaling or writing, and mindfulness or meditation. Fostering healthy and supportive relationships and maintaining appropriate boundaries for yourself are also incredibly important. Finding purpose in activities such as work, volunteering, hobbies, and meaningful quality time with others can help to maintain
feelings of positivity and contentment. In addition, it is important to have patience with yourself, take breaks when needed, and ask for support if you feel like it could be helpful.
I also would like to acknowledge the importance of checking in with others. Some people feel uncomfortable sharing how they are doing, and unfortunately keep to themselves due to a fear of being a burden. I suggest that you call your family members and ask how they are doing. Check in with friends, coworkers, or classmates, etc. I encourage you to talk to your kids and educate them on mental health and ask if they are experiencing mental health related symptoms. The more we talk about it, the more natural and comfortable it becomes, allowing kids and teens to feel open and willing to share if they are having a difficult time. If that is the case, I recommend that you seek support and resources, in efforts to be as preventative as possible. It isn’t as often that we slow down to look another person in the eye, and just say, “Hey, how are doing?”.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, I encourage you to try to do something kind for someone else. Perhaps you will consider a random act of kindness, such as buying a coffee or tea for the person in line behind you at the coffee shop. How about taking a few moments to write a nice card or note to a family member or friend you haven’t talked with in a while? There are many ideas that are free and take little to no time or effort. Try holding the door for a stranger, picking up an item someone might have dropped, giving a friendly wave to the neighbor walking by, or even a simple smile to someone when you are out and about. Keep in mind that there are people who experience isolation, loneliness, and don’t have the opportunity to interact with others on a regular basis. A smile or friendly “hello” could be the highlight of their day. It is also important to remember that we don’t know what other people are going through and what challenges they might be experiencing. A kind compliment from a stranger can go a long way, so I hope you will give it a try. Plus, being kind to others feels good on the giving end as well!

SIZZLE & NOURISH YOUR SUMMERTIME SKIN SURVIVAL GUIDE
Hey sun seekers and wellness warriors! With summer vibes in full swing, let's chat about a must-have: protecting your skin while enjoying those sunny days. Glowing skin is awesome, but let's avoid the lobster look, okay? Imagine lounging on the beach, looking and feeling amazing, with skin as chill as a cucumber. How? It's more than just sunscreen (although, seriously, don't forget it). It's about what you eat too.
YES,
you heard it right! Nutrition isn't just about fitting into your favorite swimsuit; it's about giving your skin the love and nourishment it deserves. So, let's dive into some tasty treats that double as your skin's BFFs.
FIRST UP,
hydrate like it's your job! Sip on coconut water to replenish electrolytes and keep your skin supple and glowing. Load up on antioxidant-rich fruits such as berries and citrus to fight off free radicals and keep those UV rays at bay.
AND DON'T FORGET
the greens, folks!
Leafy veggies including spinach and kale are packed with skin-loving vitamins A and C, giving you that enviable summer glow from the inside out.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Amp up your skin's defense with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and chia seeds. These beauties help maintain your skin's natural barrier, keeping those harmful rays from wreaking havoc.
NOW,
before you hit the waves, here's a vital reminder: Research your sunscreen before slathering it on. Shockingly, many sunscreens contain potentially harmful ingredients. Make sure yours is free from chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been linked to coral reef damage and even hormone disruption. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for safer protection.
FUEL
your body with the good stuff, choose your sunscreen wisely, and get ready to glow like the summer goddess you are. Cheers to sunny days and skin that's as fierce as you are!

BEAUTY TIPS+TRICKS FOR PETS
Is your pet setting trends on the runway, or Boho chic in the backyard? Either way, check out these quick tips to get your pet beauty pageant ready for summer.
• Since their entire body is covered in fur, brushing, even a short haired dog or cat, is important. For longer haired dogs combs are important, as well to make sure you are brushing that undercoat and not just the top layer.
• Some pets can roll out of bed and their hair already looks great. They have that natural glow! Some pets look like they lost their battle in a wind storm and now have dreads that they did not get professionally done! These mats can become quite tight and can be super uncomfortable. We see many pets for lacerations that need stitches as people are tempted to cut those mats out with scissors. Quick barbershop trims with scissors can end up costing you in the long run. If mats get out of control, make a grooming appointment to get these safely taken care of.
• People are often convinced that they need to shave their dog or cat in the summer months to help keep them cool. However, pets with undercoats thermally regulate themselves. This means the under coat keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. When this coat is gone, these dogs can overheat. There is also a potential that their lush undercoat may not grow back at all.
• A pedicure should happen roughly every 2-4 weeks. The longer you wait, the longer the quick grows. A long quick means a longer nail. If you can trim the tips every other week, then the quicks stay shorter. This task can be a very fearful event and lots of training, desensitization and possibly medication may be needed to make this task less scary. There does not need to be pain in beauty.
• For cats you can apply vinyl claw covers every several weeks. Not only does this prevent the cat from leaving graffiti on your furniture, it also is a great accessory. Pick your colors based on what holiday is coming up!
• No dry shampoo for these guys! While cats may not tolerate a bath, dogs may need and require frequent baths. There is no such thing as bathing too much but this is an instance where product really does matter! These baths should always be followed with a conditioner to help moisturize the skin and smooth the hair follicles and good cool water rinse is important! This can be especially important during allergy seasons when the allergens sit on the skin and coat and cause irritation. When in doubt, wash it out!
• Are you trying to keep those grills white and clean to create that perfect smile?
• Don’t fall for the “dental package” at the salon. Save your money and buy them a pup cup on the way home! Just as in people, pets build up plaque with each meal. We brush our teeth twice a day (right!?). When we forget to brush, that plaque hardens and turns into calculus, then your hygienist has to scrape this off at your dental appointments. Long story short, if you are not brushing your pet’s teeth daily, or at least several times a week, brushing once every 6 weeks or once a year does nothing.
• Just as in people, fashion and beauty can also cause a great deal of stress. When we go to get our hair done, we sit nicely for them to give a head massage or let the color set in under the heater. Your pet might or might not sit nicely but they don’t speak Human and they have no idea what’s going to happen. These appointments can be very scary. If you have a puppy or kitten that will require grooming, get them in for some fear-free visits. Early in their lives, make an appointment for them to have a bath only or just get treats on the table. It’s not fair to assume that they will be “fine.”
• Clothing is not for every pet and doesn’t need to make a statement. For some pets getting dressed up is incredibly stressful. Others feel naked without it. Some dogs become quite anxious when their collars are removed while some cats become clearly distressed when bling is around their neck! Thundershirts for things such as fireworks and thunderstorms can be helpful in some patients who like to feel like they are being snuggled, but if you are only putting this garment on before a thunderstorm you can INCREASE their anxiety as they now associate it with something scary coming!
Remember that grooming is not just about appearances but it also serves a purpose. With these quick tips, you and your pet can enjoy a fabulous summer together whether on the runway or in the backyard!

NEW TO PLANTS?
As the public becomes more interested in issues such as habitat loss, pollinator populations, and low-maintenance gardening, I’ve gotten more questions from both beginners and experienced gardeners regarding native plants. Here are some of the common questions I’ve received:
What are native plants?
Native plants are plants that have originated in and adapted to our area. Southern Minnesota is home to two separate biomes (a large area characterized by its vegetation, soil, climate, and wildlife): Tall grass prairie and deciduous woods. Native prairie plants are mostly grasses and forbs that have evolved to withstand extreme temperatures, lots of sunlight, grazing from large mammals such as bison, and fires that once swept across the plains and kept trees at bay. These conditions made these plants the hardy species that makes them attractive to gardeners today—most of their biomass is actually stored in their roots. There are also many native woodland species of trees, shrubs, and understory plants that have historically grown along rivers and wetlands that protected them from wildfires.
How will I know if a plant is native?
Experienced garden center and nursery staff will be able to help you determine if a plant is native or not. A good rule of thumb to remember is that a cultivar is not native. You can tell that a plant is a cultivar because it has a name in single quotation marks. For example, although switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a native grass to Minnesota, Panicum virgatum ‹Shenandoah› is cultivated to have a brighter red color. Non-native plants and cultivars still have their place in our landscapes, but these distinctions are important, especially if you are required to plant natives through programs such as Lawns to Legumes.
Which native plants should I grow?
An important factor to consider before purchasing native plants is your soil type and light conditions. If you have a wet soil that gets lots of sunlight, look for species such as lobelia, blue flag iris, and swamp milkweed. If your soil tends to by dry, you can plant species such as purple prairie clover, vervain, and hyssop. Woodland species including Pennsylvania sedge, lady fern, columbine, and Virginia bluebells work well in the shade.
If you’re trying to attract pollinators, butterfly milkweed, blazing star, asters, and goldenrod would be good options. If you love the
texture of grasses, little bluestem turns various colors throughout the season beginning with green, to blue, and a coppery red in fall. Prairie dropseed forms a tufted mound with slender long flowering panicles and a unique fragrance.
Another characteristic to consider before planting is the height of the plants when fully grown. Some grasses like big bluestem can grow more than six feet tall, while prairie smoke rarely grows taller than a foot. Planting tall plants together as a group will help to hold each other upright and prevent them from crowding out smaller species.
Red osier dogwood and serviceberry are great native options for landscape shrubs, as well as trees such as ironwood, oak, and hackberry.
How do I care for native plants?
Many native plants will be small when planted and can take a year or two to grow into their full size after they’re planted. That’s because they are working on developing their dense root system that makes them so hardy. I’d always recommend a starter fertilizer when you plant. Once these plants are established, they shouldn’t require much of anything for fertilizer or water.
I recommend leaving your native plants through the fall and winter as a food source and shelter for insects and animals. In the spring, chop them down with a pair of sharp shears or mow them down with a push mower. You can leave last year’s growth on the ground and use it as mulch for the coming year.
Can I start native plants from seed?
Yes, many native plants are easily grown from seed. Many do however require cold stratification for best germination. This process involves keeping the seeds are in cold, moist conditions similar to the Minnesota winters they are accustomed to. It’s important to remember that it can also take a few seasons for these to reach flowering size as they spend the first couple of years developing a dense root system. Patience is required, but the reward is beautiful.

HEARING AIDS CAN HELP!
Receiving your first set of hearing aids does not have to be a scary experience. In fact, it should be an exciting experience that leads you to better hearing. Choosing the right hearing care provider is key to your success.
The hearing industry has best practice guidelines when it comes to fitting hearing aids to ensure that providers understand what they must do to ensure maximum benefit with hearing treatment.
Hearing aids can help as long as you have a hearing care provider who is knowledgeable and specialized in programming hearing aids. Many of you likely receive dozens of mailers about hearing products. There are many options, from private practice hearing specialists to medical audiologists at a clinic. But make sure you know as much as possible about the practice, the provider, and the hearing aids they sell. You need to feel confident and comfortable.
Your hearing aids will only be as good as the provider programming them! The last feeling you should have is high sales pressure to make a decision on the spot. Ask questions, and don’t be afraid to say no. Hearing aids are an investment, not just a financial one, but a health-changing investment that will impact more than just your bank account. Make the right decision by doing your homework. Ask your friends for referrals and who they trust with their hearing health.
What
you should expect during your hearing aid fitting
Before and after questions are a great way to determine how much success you are having with your hearing aids.
The physical fit of your hearing aids affects more than comfort, it can dictate how well a hearing aid can be programmed and functions.
Make sure you communicate to your hearing professional your technology comfort. If you are not tech savvy, that is okay, hearing aids don’t have to be complicated. They can be programmed to be simplified for patients who just want to hear.
Understand you must have realistic expectations. You will never hear like you did when you were younger. Getting used to hearing aids takes time and isn’t always easy. There will be some sounds that you hate, but it will get better. Your hearing care provider should discuss with you what to expect.
Remember, you are not the only one affected by your hearing loss. Family members will also benefit from this life changing choice! Enjoy the sounds you have been missing.

New American Families
For more than 10 years, YWCA Mankato has been a partner to the refugee and immigrant communities of the Mankato area. Through its ongoing program, New American Families (NAF), the focus remains on supporting Somali and Latino families with children from prenatal to age five. NAF’s efforts center on personalized home visits using the “Parents as Teachers” curriculum, and a comprehensive approach to addressing social determinants of health. Together, community members and YWCA Mankato are working hand in hand to remove obstacles and create a nurturing environment where families can flourish.
While prenatal care plays an important role in ensuring maternal and infant health, research has shown that Minnesota provides unequal access to prenatal care for African American/Black and Latina mothers. In addition, children of color, as measured by race and ethnicity, are more likely to live in low-income households and least likely to enroll in preschool programs by ages 3 to 4.
To this end, YWCA Mankato works with families resettling in the United States to provide services which include home visiting for immigrant and/or refugee parents that are either pregnant or have children up to age 5, referrals and resources for families seeking essentials such as education access, health care, human basics, and economic supports.
In our commitment to inclusive practices, YWCA Mankato ensures that our team reflects the diversity of those we serve. We employ Parent Educators and Community Outreach Specialists who deeply understand the unique needs of our communities. Additionally, our monthly Group Connections provide a vital platform for families to forge connections, share experiences, and access resources within the broader Mankato community.
To further the impact and to really address the upstream root causes of barriers experienced by refugee and immigrant families in Minnesota, YWCA’s staff is exploring and expanding advocacy efforts that address systems that are not built for ethnically diverse families. As an example, employment options are limited for non-English speaking individuals. As our region struggles with a shrinking workforce, it is crucial that we address language barriers as a challenge separating qualified workers from vacant positions.
At YWCA Mankato, we believe in addressing barriers at every level of community —personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural. We invite everyone in Southern Minnesota to join us in welcoming New American Families into our neighborhoods and embracing the richness of diversity within our communities. Together, we can create a more just and compassionate society for all. By addressing disparities in access to prenatal care and advocating for systemic change, we are working towards a future where all families, regardless of background, can lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Join us in this mission as we continue to champion the well-being of mothers and infants, ensuring a brighter and more equitable future for generations to come.

SELF-CARE LOOKS GOOD ON YOU
True beauty stems from being healthy and happy. To be healthy and happy, women need to put themselves first. That’s easier said than done.
No matter how tired or hungry we are, we make sure everyone is taken care of before we eat or rest. We tend to put the needs of our children, spouse, aging parents, or workplace above our own needs.
Instead, follow the wisdom of the pre-flight announcement: Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.
Now let’s look at ways to take care of you and make your physical and emotional health a priority.
Well-Woman Visits are recommended annually for women of all ages. Women go through many transitions in life: menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. With each stage, you have different healthcare needs. Your healthcare provider follows preventive guidelines to make sure you are screened for cervical cancer, breast cancer and other cancers. As you face menopause, we can help you navigate this transition and manage symptoms.
Annual well-woman visits are a starting point for good health. We may advise a routine blood test to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. This simple test can help us catch cardiovascular issues or pre-diabetes when there’s still time to prevent health conditions that can affect your quality of life.
As a family nurse practitioner, I encourage you to be honest with your healthcare provider. We can support you in establishing health habits to make activity, nutrition and good sleep part of your everyday routine. If you’re struggling with using tobacco products, alcohol or drugs, start the conversation with your healthcare provider.
Emotional and mental health is as important as your physical health. Your well-woman visit is much more than a physical exam. We talk
about what’s going on in your life. If you’re thinking about having a baby, we’ll talk about lifestyle, vitamins, medications and more. If you want to prevent pregnancy, we’ll discuss birth control options.
We treat the whole person. We ask how you’re feeling and sleeping? Are you depressed or anxious? Are you stressed? Are you grieving? Are you going through changes at work or home?
Your annual visit will set the table for self-care.
Self-Care is not selfish! It’s up to us to take care of ourselves so we have the energy to take care of others. Self-care is a good night’s sleep, yoga, a walk, reading, painting our nails, showering! Good selfcare refreshes and refuels.
Move, eat and sleep are the triangle of self-care. Look for ways to move more and sit less every day. Walking is one of the best ways to move more. When you want to talk with your husband, children or friends, suggest a walk together. Research shows that walking and talking helps people talk more freely and easily. Give it a try!
Be realistic about healthy eating. For instance, add an extra vegetable or fruit to each meal. Try no-meat Mondays and cook easy recipes such as bean and rice bowls with tasty toppings. Get your family involved in meal prep. It’s good to get help.
For better sleep, skip the social media scroll and unplug 30-60 minutes prior to going to bed.
Self-care looks good on you!
