10 WOMAN OF INFLUENCE: JENEE NAIFEH LISTER

Jenee Naifeh Lister is a vivacious, high-energy game-changer. In her decades-long career, she helps multiple generations of families secure their futures via her wealthmanagement guidance and expertise. Her philanthropic life is equally vital. Raised by two of the great benefactors of Oklahoma’s civic and arts nonprofits, Bob and Jeaneen Naifeh, Jenee takes her legacy, as well as the legacies of those who works with, quite seriously.

13 THE ARTISAN: KOLBE THAGGARD

True bespoke clothing was once reserved for frequenters of London’s Saville Row or the ultra-rich in Singapore or Paris. Kolbe Thaggard is a man obsessed with perfection and dedicated to offering his clients across the country a white-glove level of service, extraordinary design and immaculate textile choices. There is almost nothing more indulgent, yet practical, than clothing made-to-measure.

RETREAT TO BALI 22 Andrea Mason returns to the Island of the Gods, a spiritual, beautiful place she’d

fallen in love with in 2017. For six transformative days, Mason and a group of women took flight from everything they knew, opted out of the daily hustle-bustle and opted into something powerful, and dare we say it, magical.

34 BARE TONE: THE NEW NUDES

Although some would argue that nude is always in fashion, there’s no denying that a new nude moment is afoot. At once sultry, sensual, and polished-but-never-prim, flesh tones in beautiful, textural pieces are the name of the fashion game as the season heats up. Sleek. Sexy. Wearable. This is public nudity we wholeheartedly embrace.

LOCAL OWNERS: MICHAEL THOMAS AND RICK ALLISS 43 Operating at the intersection of commerce and culture, partners Michael Thomas and Rick Alliss founded their newest endeavor, amshot, as a way to combine highlevel consulting and Fortune 500-level IT services. A true community collaborator, amshot opens its groovy office space to Oklahoma City’s art patrons with quarterly celebrations featuring local artists and local breweries in its never-ending quest to prove IT can be fun.

INTEGRITY, RESPECT & LOVE A Note from the Publisher In my life, I find a surprisingly short list of things that genuinely matter and many, many things that simply do not. Among those that matter the most is living with integrity, respect, and love. When these concepts are your guide, life (and business) becomes elegant, simple, and gracious. At Luxiere, integrity, respect, and love define how we approach everything we do as professionals and in our personal lives as well. We are publishers, journalists, artists and photographers, community members, parents, lovers and friends. It is a joy to bring each issue of LUXIERE to life, but with that joy comes deep responsibility. We approach our work with a simple, time-tested practice: if we say we will do something, we’ll do it. Our word is good. Our intentions are earnest. Our commitment to our clients is unwavering, as is our excitement and delight at introducing you to the most remarkable people and places in each issue. It is our greatest fortune to collaborate with people who are dedicated leaders in their respective fields. We fill our pages with the stories of brilliant and innovative people: artists, business owners, surgeons, real estate developers, designers, thought-leaders, realtors and athletes. We journey with you to exotic destinations and luxurious homes, and telling each of these stories is a privilege.

family’s legacy of philanthropy are inspirational. You’ll meet her on page 10. We’ll take you to Bali with Andrea Mason, co-owner of the beautifully understated, Scandinavian-inspired spa Udander in downtown Oklahoma City, as she leads a sun-drenched wellness retreat, starting on page 22, and we’ll introduce you to Amshot, an IT company with a strong commitment to the arts. Always in pursuit of great fashion, we bring you an exciting exploration of a classic neutral, beigeon-beige (but in no way vanilla), on page 35. Finally, we extend our deepest condolences to our longtime Luxiere family member, Chelsey Ann. Her dearly beloved brother, Chad Epley, was killed in a hit-and-run accident as he was bicycling early one morning. Chad was a culinary genius: a talented chef whose work at Vast restaurant atop the Devon Tower delighted thousands. More than that, though, he was a creative, curious, gentle soul whose energy and light will be sorely missed. We dedicate this issue of Luxiere to the memory of Chad Epley and to everyone who loves him. My Best,

Stacy D. Johnson

This issue brings you the story of Janee Naifeh Lister, a woman whose bold career and commitment to her luxiere /luk-zhur-ee/ A state of abundance, beauty, ease and comfort that is unique to each individual. 4

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

JENEE NAIFEH LISTER

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE Jenee Lister works tirelessly and cheerfully each and every day, building her legacy and the legacies of her clients. She wants her legacy to be one of love. “I hope people remember me for loving my family, my community, and my work,” she says. What she may not realize, though, is that she also leaves a trail of sunshine. Talking with her about anything is like having a strong cup of coffee and a shot of vitamin B12, all while sitting in a field of flowers. She’s effervescent, and it’s contagious.

Jenee Lister is a conduit for excellent encouragement, a proponent of never giving up and a believer in making a difference wherever you can. She draws her own inspiration from her family, her early mentors, her clients, and people whose stories of perseverance intrigue her, and she funnels that energy to the men and women she mentors. Her ability to learn from such a wide variety of people from so many walks of life is indicative of her voracious capacity for positivity.

Her life, like many women’s, is an imperfect balancing act. Maybe more like a juggling act, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. On any given day she might be flying to one of twenty or so states to meet with clients, rushing to attend her daughter’s softball games, or attending a board meeting for one of the many nonprofits and institutions she focuses on philanthropically. Her current board and trustee service includes Oklahoma City University, Casady School, United Way of Central Oklahoma and the Economic Club of Oklahoma.

“I am not inspired by just one person. I find inspiration all around. I am inspired by successful people like Bill and Melinda Gates who believe that all lives have equal value and that all children and young people should survive and thrive. I also find inspiration in stories of adversity and determination such as the author JK Rowling. This determined woman would not take no for an answer. Her manuscript was turned down by dozens of publishers. She could have quit and remained on government aid, but she believed in her product and herself. I am sure she had many doubts along the way, but if she’d quit the world would never have been introduced to Harry Potter!”

Mentorship is a special passion for Lister, in part because her own career was guided by meaningful mentoring, beginning before she’d even graduated. During her junior year at Oklahoma State University, her advisor suggested she consider financial management as a career. “That summer I made an appointment to visit my parents’ advisor, Bill Massad at Merrill Lynch, for career advice. Bill was very gracious to spend time with me and advise me on my career path,” she says. He suggested she spend a few years in sales to build her potential client base. She worked for a bank the first year after graduation, and then, as she says, “A little bit of good fortune came my way when I ran into Bill Massad one day. He asked me if I would quit my job and join him at Merrill. Of course I was stunned, and at the age of 24 I had no idea what was in store for me. I stated that I did not have the beginning of a client base as he had suggested. Bill told me not to worry as he would teach me everything I needed to know. My first day at Merrill was March 14, 1988. I have been with the firm ever since.” Massad’s mentorship, along with that of his partner Rick Fitzgerald, encouraged her to begin mentoring young people. “Through the years I have mentored young people in the community as well as at work. Through my Leadership Oklahoma City Class XIII, I learned about The Youth Leadership Exchange. This program was in its infancy and I joined early as a mentor. Mentors were assigned a student for the year. We transported them to and from their class every day. While in the car we had time to visit about the day ahead, and on the way home we visited about what was learned. I enjoyed being a mentor so much that I joined the board and eventually became Co-Program Leader for Class 2 and 3 of YLX.” She adds, “At work I try to keep an open door policy. In our business, it is very difficult to get established. I explain to our young colleagues that it takes about 10 years before you are comfortable and settled. I encourage my colleagues to keep up the hard work, because in time you will be rewarded.”

Lister and her team at Merrill Lynch are constantly inspired by the 120+ families they serve. “We are with our clients, helping them attain their goals, for multiple generations. I am honored to help them through the events of their lives, whether that’s planning travel, their children’s college, retirement or the legacy that they want to leave,” she says. The importance of legacy is something Lister’s family takes to heart. Her parents, Jeaneen, now in her 90s, and the late Bob Naifeh, taught her lessons of love, determination, philanthropy and grit, beginning in her childhood. “Some of the first life lessons that I learned were from my parents. As a business owner, my father left the house every morning at 4 a.m. and worked until late at night in order to build a legacy for his children and grandchildren. Dad taught me to never give up, face obstacles that get in my way, and plan your work and work the plan. He taught me to take risks and that it is okay to make mistakes as long as you learn and grow from the experience,” she says. Her mother’s determination equals that of her late father. Like so many strong women of her era, Jeaneen Naifeh made her mark within the parameters of a traditional gender role. “In regards to my mother, she lived the quote: Behind every successful man is a great woman. Mom was tasked with raising four children while supporting Dad in his business endeavors. Beyond child rearing, Mom was Dad’s sounding board. They planned their path together when making business decisions and considered the impact on their family. This example of collaboration taught me how to be a partner to my husband Darren.” Darren, like Lister’s father, is the founder of a company. “He established EGR Inc. in 1999,” she says.“EGR is a manufacturing company specializing in commercial cabinets and millwork. Our son Dylan works alongside Darren. Our daughter Madge is finishing her sophomore year at Casady.”

Q

Stacy: Explain to me what you do. What is your unique expertise?

Kolbe: I am a Fashion Designer, specifically menswear and womenswear. I began doing custom suiting three years ago. I always dreamed of creating impeccably tailored apparel and planned to be a full-fledged designer; creating custom suiting was the first step. My clientele has grown, and I now have offerings that range from men’s suiting, shirting, casual wear, and leather goods (shoes, belts, and bags) to women’s clothing including suits, jackets, jumpsuits, dresses, bags, and heels.

Q

Stacy: How is what you do different from anyone else in Oklahoma?

Kolbe: Some of what I just described, true custom-designed apparel, separates me from other stores and “clothiers”. Most clothiers only specialize in custom suiting in addition to a few ready-to-wear offerings. Most of these clothes, especially the ready-to-wear, are being made in China or other Asian countries, although some may be made in US factories. A lot of custom suiting that you will find locally is actually industrially made, with an expensive fabric being fed through a machine that cuts it to the specifications needed and then stitches it together. There is nothing “wrong” with this method; however, it does come with its own unique set of limitations, since a set of standard patterns are adjusted to fit the measurements. My process is quite different. From the youngest age that I can remember, I have had an obsession with the smallest of details and craftsmanship. The initial meeting with each client allows me to get to know them and understand their wants and needs. We subsequently move to the design process - I will personally sketch the piece and have the most exquisite materials available for the client to select. When the design and the fabric are solidified, I take complete body measurements which then are sent to my team of artisans in Naples, Italy, who construct a physical pattern for the garment. This is what separates KT from other stores: we actually create the pattern specifically for the client’s body instead of a having a factory modify an existing pattern to fit. From the pattern, each garment is constructed entirely by hand from start to finish. Doing it the proper way produces an unparalleled fit that you will never achieve with a machine, period. There is no substitute for artisanship. Once the garment is completed, I bring the client in for an initial fitting, and we make any adjustments I deem necessary - I am a perfectionist to the point of obsession. After the adjustments are incorporated, I hand deliver and fit each garment personally via a white-glove level of service. The final, personal fitting is vitally important to me, as it adds a finishing touch to the experience that is unconventional and reserved for the most exclusive group of individuals – those with impeccable taste and the means to achieve it. If the client allows, I photograph and have my videographer document the experience. 14 LUXIERE

LOC AL ARTISAN

my process is quite different.

Q

Stacy: I understand you have clients all over the world. Would you describe your client base?

Kolbe: I have an amazing local client base; however, I also have clients in other cities and states. Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, New York City, Atlanta, Arkansas, Seattle to name a few. Others are coming soon. My client base ranges from everyday individuals to business owners, entrepreneurs, CEOs, YouTubers, basketball players and a few celebrities.

Q

Stacy: What are the current trends in men’s fashion?

Kolbe: I think we are in an interesting era for fashion in many ways. Tailoring is making a huge comeback along with bold colors, patterns, branding on everything. Streetwear is being mixed with tailoring, which can give rise to very unique styles. The luxury fashion market has continued to see growth year after year, with millennials accounting for 30% to 60% of the customer base. Marketing and branding is vitally important, and we are seeing a large amount of social media being used to promote products and brands.

FA R E W E L L T O B O R I N G APPLIANCES This was an incredible year of innovation for appliances! It was as if the entire appliance industry woke up right before DCW and decided they should care about how their product looks -- not just whether they can cook the perfect chicken or provide a beverage center. Think high-fashion makeover for the utilitarian. There were a few companies that really stood out for their fashion-forward approach to their 2019 Collections. True® Residential, a quality refrigeration brand that has been tested and loved by professional chefs for years, has stepped up their color game. The eye-catching emerald green and gold display attracted crowds. Emerald, navy blue, white and black were welcome color additions to the typical stainless garb that quality appliances have worn for years. Monogram® was another big standout. Their newest Minimal Collection was the perfect example of the general minimalist movement in the appliance arena. The display featured several wall ovens, all with unique frames, to show how well your new appliances can complement whatever finishes you have selected. Fisher & Paykel® delighted designers and builders alike with cool clean controls and sleek design direction. One thing is for sure – quality appliances are not the heavy, clunky work horses of the early 2000’s, and now is time to take a look at a fresher group of truly functional pieces of art. Bringing these stunning new looks to Oklahoma is Harry’s TV and Appliance, just north of Nichols Hills. I encourage you to visit them before you buy one more boring appliance! 18 LUXIERE

TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES T O M O V E L I F E F O R WA R D High tech has been the focus of many vendors over the past few years and that number is definitely growing. There are so many ways that clever companies are incorporating new technology into the spaces around us in order to improve the way (and ease) in which we live our lives. Technology has changed how we control fire as well as the way that we display it. DaVinci Custom Fireplaces® unveiled some innovative new sizes and finishes at the show. Seeing several new non-traditional fireplace shapes got my creative juices flowing -- and my favorite look has to be the long, linear 3-sided glass installation that was front and center styled in their display. This massive feat of fire genius would steal center stage in an open concept modern home or add warmth and depth in a rustic industrial warehouse (as it was stylized in their display). And, the impressive design didn’t just stop with what you can see. New for 2019 is DaVinci’s TouchSmart Technology® which provides touch screen control as a standard offering. Of course if you have a home that is as smart as your youngest child, then perhaps the optional Voice Command would be a better fit for you...”Alexa, start a fire”. With locations in both Tulsa and OKC, Rick’s House of Fire is bringing these beautiful new designs and cutting-edge technologies home to Oklahoma. Visit them to see even more. Technology has affected our industry in more ways than merely connecting your smartphone to your thermostat or giving you the ability to preheat your oven from the driveway! It has actually allowed

designers and manufacturers who know what they are doing to harness new technology to create more beautiful finishes. Nowhere was that technological marvel more apparent at DCW than with the tile vendors. The leading-edge processes of printing onto tile have allowed the industry to create magic. Today’s sophisticated manufacturing capabilities give designers the power to get looks to market quicker -- with less limitations, more detail and greater variety than ever before. I fell in love with the 3-D tiles in hex and diamond shapes from Bedrosians® and look for these to be very popular WOW factors and unexpected installs like kids’ bathrooms, powder rooms and that über fun wet bar. Not to be outdone, the folks at Somertile® did not disappoint with their unique looks in the style of pop art and graffiti. I loved the interesting story that these tiles allowed me to create, and I would love to see these used in unconventional places like laundry rooms, drop zones, mud benches or kids’ study areas. My good friend, Sydnye, and her team at Artisan Tile Studio in Nichols Hills would be thrilled to help you explore some of these allnew looks to amp up your favorite spaces or design all new surfaces for your home.

D I G I N T O T H E D E TA I L S W I T H H A R D WA R E It seems like only yesterday we started to see some minor influences of warmer metal tones like brass and what we now lovingly call “aged gold” in design trends. Fast forward to this year’s show and you totally realize that gold is here to stay! Metallics abound - from plumbing fixtures to lighting and from hardware to even appliances, making it easier than ever to take a chance on the look. Seize the opportunities to add subtle hints of metallics all throughout your spaces. This year, there seemed to be a revolution in attention to detail in hardware. I feel that designers have truly taken hardware to a whole new level, with advanced machining and textural elements that give these very important pieces even more of a jewelry feel. Wilshire Cabinet + Co in OKC is always on top of the very latest hardware trends and newest finishes with staff that go the extra mile. To assist you with selecting and installing a little luxury on your cabinets, ask for Jennie, “the OKC Hardware Queen”, for help on your next hardware update or original install.

B O L D E R , DA R K E R CO LO R S DCW décor was all about the dark and moody colors. Dramatic looks, including blacks, golds, chocolates and deep purples, are at the forefront of today’s most current looks. I saw deep, dark reds, richer hues of stain, and more contrast than we have in the past few years. The calm, cool, clean and airy looks are still very popular, and with the serene feelings they provide, I don’t see them trailing off too soon. But for those who want their surroundings to feel more vibrant and alive and want to evoke that jaw- dropping moment when they entertain, there are so many great looks coming your way! No one wore it better than Plato Woodwork, Inc out of Plato, MN. Their newest collections feature bold, deep colors. Pairing their cabinetry with deeper-colored countertop materials added even more interest. One thing is for sure: this will definitely not be the year of boring kitchen designs! The color teams from both Sherwin-Williams and PPG Paints showcased their 2019 Colors of the Year at DCW. Check out Sherwin-Williams SW7701 Cavern Clay, and my personal new favorite color, PPG1145-7 Night Watch. You will surely want to incorporate these tones in art or accessories to keep your home at the forefront of what is happening in the color world! Au revoir, Vegas. Bonjour, OKC! This year DCW was full of surprises, and I am not just talking about the first time I have ever seen it snow in Las Vegas! Sorry Nevada, but the Oklahoma crowd brought some of our crazy weather your way...#welcome! As I always say, friends don’t let friends drink and design, so call on one of these fantastic Oklahoma resources and experience one of these latest new products for yourself. 20 LUXIERE

I thought to myself at that moment, this was the reason that I came to Bali.

24 LUXIERE

T R AV E L

The moment I arrived in Ubud (Bali) for the first time, I knew I would be back and that the next visit would be with a group whose members I did not know, but who could share the magic of this place. My first trip to Bali (back in July 2017) was life changing. I had just gone through a divorce. I was at a pivotal point in my career and life, and I felt stuck. In fact, I sat on the porch of my little Jawanese house (in the wee hours of the morning due to the significant time change) and wrote pages and pages about where I was physically, emotionally and spiritually. Not only was I reflecting on the past, but on where I was in the present moment and where I was headed in the future. I sat there alone and just noticed all that came to the surface for me. It was painful, enlightening, healing, and beautiful all at the same time. During my 6-night stay at the eco-chic hotel Bambu Indah (so thoughtfully created by husband and wife team Cynthia and John Hardy), I began envisioning what it would look like to bring a group back. The hotel property speaks for itself, but the culture and the people of Bali absolutely make it. I ate the most fresh and amazing food. I visited Tirta Empul (the water temple) for an individual water blessing with a Hindu priest. Strapped in, I swung in the jungle. I witnessed happiness through the eyes of people who did not have much. I saw how families lived in a compound where some kids slept on the porch, and I saw richness in it. I saw a healer who not only immediately found areas in my body that needed attention, but who allowed me to cry and surrender to the experience of sincerely letting go. Of all of it. I remember hearing the words spoken

to me, “You must be at one with yourself, before you can give to others.” I thought to myself at that moment, this was the reason that I came to Bali, for a soulful experience and healing that changed me. Mainly, my perspective on life had changed. During the first flight home of my earlier trip, I had put together a 6-day itinerary that I thought would be beneficial for others: an itinerary that was curated, meaningful, and which would help heal any situation that a person might be facing in life. I wanted to bring together the right resources and people to collaborate with who would support the overall mission of bringing a spiritual and inclusive experience to others. Upon arriving home, I remember standing in the house I was living at the time, and thinking, “huh” - I was ready to go back. The itinerary

sat on my laptop for several months, and seven months later, I put my first deposit down on a retreat that would be the beginning of something new. Something that has nothing to do with me, but a business that would help transform the lives of others through wellness and create connection through passion and purpose. The name of my business is Abhinaya (meaning “leading an audience towards” in Sanskrit). For more information on upcoming retreats, please visit www.abhinaya.me or email andrea@ abhinaya.me.

Energetic Wellness - the name speaks for itself. At first, I really didn’t understand how important the location of Energetic Wellness is to its services for and effects on people - mainly because most of us have to search hard, far, and wide to find the products and people we need to help support our health journey and our new-found love for our selves. The Center is neatly nestled down in a wooded lot on a busy street in Edmond. The location is my favorite part of the place, a little hidden oasis in the bustle of growing Edmond. Once you enter the cozy, cabin-type building, you can’t see the road, hear the construction going on down the street, or feel the busyness of the surrounding city. Energetic Wellness is a “house” of all the ingredients necessary for an elevated health experience for those of us seeking a natural way of life. When you walk in you can turn right to see Dr. Menzel, go to the Vitamin D bed, or enter the Infrared Sauna. You turn left to eat at The Real Cafe or shop in the Market. Almost all of the ingredients used in The Real Cafe are available for purchase in the Market, making Energetic Wellness a synergistic place for health. My favorite products is the millet bread used for the egg sandwich. Millet is a nutrient-dense, gluten-free grain that contains impressive levels of vitamin B, magnesium, protein, and fiber, a combination that aids in digestion and helps maintain cholesterol levels. In addition, antioxidants in millet help detoxify the body. The Real Cafe is where I go to get in some healing quiet time. The cafe is tranquil

and calming and provides no way of tracking time while you are there. I personally enjoy a cup of their bone broth, made in-house from all organic, non-GMO-fed chicken bones, while I decompress for a moment at the tables lined with gemcolored pillows and enjoy the plentiful sunshine coming through the windows. It was during this quiet time that I discovered a little booklet on the table that I initially thought was a menu, but was actually a book of reasons. It outlines the Who and Why of The Real Cafe. It has a wealth of information about Dr. Menzel, The Seven Laws of Wellness, and the health reason behind every ingredient in the Real Café food. The atmosphere alone is enough to convince you to come back, but the information about ingredients, the intent of the food, and how it will serve a higher purpose in your health journey will inspire you to try every single item. For the sake of your health, there isn’t a better place to find from-scratch comfort food, prepared with the highest quality ingredients available. When you walk in, it may not matter to you where your food comes from or how it is prepared, but once you have sampled their all-organic, non-GMO, from-scratch meals, you will suddenly be more aware of why such food is so important to the nourishment of your body. You will, for the first time in a long time, feel that you’ve done your body a favor by nourishing it and not just feeding it.

WELLNESS DISCOVERIES

Energetic Wellness is a “house” of all the ingredients necessary for an elevated health experience for those of us seeking a natural way of life.

Why does food matter at Energetic Wellness?

It’s a key aspect of the health experience they offer. Dr. Menzel wrote an entire book on the protocols used to run all aspects of Energetic Wellness. The book can be purchased in the Market, alongside the all- organic, non-GMO beauty products, foods, freezer items, meats, Stone Sisters frozen pizzas, Real and Ready to Go meals, and local kombucha. You will want to dig deeper into the products offered in the Market, such as the collagen powder, the Pure Synergy Vitamin C powder, fulvic minerals, food-grade body lotions, and 100% organic natural make up and nail polish. Each product has been vetted and chosen for those looking for good companies offering 100% organic, non-GMO products. Normally I order my products online, but I am thankful to be able to find the best products on the market available locally.

Why Pure Synergy Vitamin C?

Pure Synergy is such a great brand, and they really make the best vitamin C on the market. It is made 100% from fruit, including wild sourced berries, without any corn-derived ascorbic acid, and is perfectly pure and whole — just as nature intended. It is easy to digest and can be taken daily to help with immune support and healthy skin and nails. I prefer the capsules, but I do not mind mixing my powder in water with a lemon and orange slice. It complements fulvic minerals well and the two can be taken at the same time.

Why Vital Proteins Collagen?

Vital Proteins Collagen is a protein powerhouse made from bovine hides of grass-fed, pasture-raised animals, ensuring a natural, high quality, and sustainable source of the powerful ingredient. The product is meant to be mixed into a liquid such as your morning coffee or tea, but I prefer it in the form of a fat bomb, as the texture is a bit gritty for me.

Why House-made Bone Broth?

Their bone broth is sourced from all organic, non-GMO, non-corn fed chickens. “You are what you eat” also is true for chickens as well as people, so these are the best chicken bones on the market. I really enjoy cooking with bone broth, but also, on days I need something extra, I warm up a bit of it to drink. It’s really great for toddlers to sip on as well; it gives them a protein boost while helping their gut stay healthy!

Why Morningstar Inner Vitality Fulvic Minerals?

Even if we eat a wide variety of foods, it still seems impossible to achieve complete nutrient absorption daily. Morningstar Inner Vitality Fulvic Minerals, a liquid, plantbased mineral supplement, makes it easy to attain the daily requirement of absorbable essential minerals needed to assist your body in pH balancing as well as boost your energy and help with cell regeneration. I like to use fulvic minerals as daily maintenance. It helps me feel well and allows me to not rely on coffee as much. The energy boost in the morning stays all day and complements my seasonal eating diet. I worry less about a perfect diet, knowing that I’m drinking 100% organic, natural, plant- based minerals needed for my optimal daily health.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

MICHAEL THOMAS AND RICK ALLISS: MAKING THEIR FO OTPRINT IN TECHNOLO GY AND OUR COMMUNIT Y Interview by Kati Hanna, Partner with The Mettise Group & Photos by VGM Visual Storytelling One of the things I love about living and working in Oklahoma City is the amazing talent and inspiring companies that continue to impact our community. Local entrepreneurs Michael Thomas and Rick Alliss have been making a difference with both the clients they touch and the team they are building through their unique culture and approach to business.

LUXIERE 45

amshot

How did amshot start? -------Michael Thomas: I started my first business in 2004 installing WiFi in restaurants while I was still in school, which evolved into IT consulting. I saw an opportunity to better serve my clients by pairing consulting with high-quality IT services, so I started hiring team members and amshot was born. While amshot was still growing, Rick and I met in the OKC Midtown Rotary Club. We started spending way too much time together, had many late-night tech talks at Ludivine, and eventually realized that we were two sides of the same coin. Rick joined amshot in 2015, heading up the software side of things, and now we’re able to offer our clients everything they would expect from a Fortune-500 company’s IT department. The rest is history. Why the name amshot? -------Michael Thomas: amshot is an anagram of my last name, Thomas. My family had a concrete business called Thomas Concrete and I wanted to pay homage to the Thomas name, but not as overtly. amshot was unique and short and I liked the sound of it, so I went with it. Your company is known for attracting and retaining great people; what is your secret? -------Rick Alliss: We believe that everyone is an expert in their role and we treat them as such. Even if they’re new in their role, they’re an expert at learning. From there, we create a fun environment that people want to be in. Our culture has really been a differentiating factor for us in an industry that typically sees high turnover rates. Describe the growth of the company over the past couple of years. -------Rick Alliss: amshot has always been a “learning organization”–our team is constantly learning and supporting others in learning. This has had a profound impact on our company growth—both internally and externally. Internally, team members feel empowered to succeed, and it’s had a positive effect on their productivity and their experience of working at amshot. When word gets out that amshot has a positive environment, our team grows. Externally, we’ve been

able to increase our community involvement in events, education, and sponsorships, fostering more learning in the community and getting our name out there. All these by-products of our culture—increased productivity, a growing team, and more community involvement—have allowed us to service more and larger organizations. It’s amazing to see the effect the culture has had on amshot’s growth. What are the highlights and challenges of owning your business? -------Michael Thomas: I love telling the story of how we can help our clients. Showing them how technology can help them, how it can help their business, changing the perception of technology and what it can accomplish – it’s exciting to me. On the flip side, what amshot provides is hard to explain. It’s more comprehensive than what most people understand as “IT.” Our product is tailored to each client and it doesn’t compare directly to other offerings, which makes telling that story a challenge. The trainer in me loves seeing people grow in their careers and mature in their skillset. Our annual Thanksgiving party is really the culmination of that for me. On the day before Thanksgiving every year, we have an amshot “family” gathering at an Asian restaurant. Seeing everyone together, hanging out, bringing their families, having a good time, eating lots of food—everyone whose lives have been made better by amshot—is really moving and inspiring. I love seeing the party grow bigger every year. The biggest challenge for me is keeping the company nimble as we grow. There’s a balance that’s necessary in making sure we’re always progressing but keeping things steady enough that we don’t shake up too much all at once. But I like a challenge, so it’s fun for me at the same time.

How do you maintain work/life balance? -------Michael Thomas: I have a brilliant wife who works as an attorney and two young daughters. Work/life balance can be tricky when there’s always more work to do and there’s always more time I could be spending with my family. Sometimes responsibility swings in one direction, sometimes the other, and at any moment, that can change. But as amshot has matured as a company, the boundaries between work and family have become more defined because the team at amshot is so reliable. I trust their abilities and that lets me spend more time with my family, whom I could not succeed without. Rick Alliss: My family is very important to me, and I could not do what I do without them supporting me. Because of that, I am very sensitive to everyone else’s work-life balance. I’m always brainstorming and coming up with ideas, but I’m not going to write team members in the evenings because I don’t want to burden them. I’ll bring you my thoughts and ideas Monday through Friday, nine to five. Michael is kind of the exception to that – like he said, when you own a business, work is always there and family is always there. But family is so important, and if I don’t reply to Michael during a family time, or he doesn’t reply to me, we are okay with that. Who had an impact on you as a leader? -------Michael Thomas: One of the most exciting things about my job is getting to interact with leaders at other successful businesses. I have learned so much from the interactions that I have had with my clients’ leadership teams. The way they solve problems has influenced my own problem-solving strategies, and I continue to learn from them as we grow our businesses together. Rick Alliss: Aubrey McClendon and Lori Garcia at Chesapeake taught me how to create a team environment by encouraging learning and by empowering each individual to achieve their potential. That is a strategy that I have implemented here at amshot, and it has brought us a lot of success. Describe the culture at amshot. -------Michael Thomas: When I started amshot, I set out to make a place where I wanted to work. A lot of my optimism, spontaneity, and creativity has gone in to cultivating the culture here. Rick and I also put a lot of stock in the Four-Way Test, something we were taught in Rotary. When making decisions we ask ourselves: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

From there, we put emphasis on living up to our core values of honesty, empowerment, vision, adaptability, passion, and respect, and I truly believe that those values have permeated our company as a whole. One of our brand promises is “IT can be fun,” and we work hard to make that known, especially since the industry isn’t really known for being “fun.” For example, we host a quarterly art show called exhibITion where local artists fill our office with their art, we bring in a local brewery for the opening, and the proceeds go to a charity. We’re proving that “IT can be fun,” we’re representing our core values of passion and empowerment by empowering the community, and we’re supporting the arts community— something we’re really passionate about, which, again, is unique in the technology space. Describe each of your leadership styles and how they impact your team and company. -------Michael Thomas: When I lead I am always asking myself, how would I want to be treated? Am I cultivating the type of company I would want to work at? Personally, I would want to have the freedom to make decisions and have agency over my success. I think that makes our workplace somewhere people don’t have to work, they want to. I truly care about each and every person, and when I look at amshot I see human beings, not just numbers on a spreadsheet. Rick Alliss: I believe in empowering my team members. I joke that my goal is to be useless. I want my team to be so effective and successful that they don’t even need me around. I’m always working to put procedures and processes in place that maximize confidence and empowerment and minimize the need for supervision. I know you both are lifetime learners; what book are each of you currently reading? -------Michael Thomas: Purple Cow by Seth Godin. I’m always looking for better ways to tell the story of amshot, and this book was recommended to me by someone who knows that. We’re already using some of the strategies in the book, which is exciting, and I am interested to get another angle on how to differentiate amshot by the way we present ourselves. We’re striving to be a “Purple Cow.” Rick Alliss: The Good Neighbor by Maxwell King. Leadership is all about communication and showing people that you care enough to help them grow, and Fred Rogers was great at that. He used to say, “I like you just the way you are.” He conveyed genuine care in everything he did, and that’s something that I aspire to be known for. What is the one book you would recommend to other leaders? -------Michael Thomas: The CEO Next Door. It’s a very actionable book that I have read several times and have applied to my own role at amshot. The truth is that most of the admirable skills attributed to legendary CEOs are learned skills, not inherent ones. Understanding that helped me appreciate some natural tendencies that I had never recognized in myself and highlighted some areas that I needed to work on. And it’s all backed by data. Rick Alliss: Radical Candor by Kim Scott. It really helped me understand what a “good boss” looks like. In order to help others grow, you have to understand how to communicate expectations well. It’s about challenging them, but also showing them you care.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as leaders? -------Michael Thomas: I am part of an executive peer group called “The Tribe”, where we discuss challenges and brainstorm solutions. It’s been a really great resource as amshot grows. I also really enjoy staying up-to-date with the news, but I’m a big fan of the newspaper over television news. I find it’s often more curated and thought-out than the sensationalist headlines on television. Rick Alliss: I think podcasts are a great resource for potential and growing leaders, so I listen to a lot of podcasts. I am also part of The Tribe and several other leadership organizations, and I try to read as much as I can — especially books about people that I aspire to be more like. How has your life experience made you the leader you are today? -------Michael Thomas: My parents always told me I could do anything I wanted to do. That was both inspirational and exciting—they allowed me the freedom to do what I wanted, and that included making mistakes. It gave me the confidence to pursue my goals without fear. And even now, I do what I want! I also traveled a lot, and that gave me an appreciation for how different cultures solve the same problem in different ways. There are many paths to success and an infinite ways to succeed at any one thing. Rick Alliss: My father was in the Air Force for 20 years; he taught me the benefits of structure and the drawbacks of over-structure. My dad was a great leader who brought a lot of structure to his team. He was a rulefollower, so much so that they called him “Safety Dave.” But he also looked after the people around him. During the holidays, my parents threw parties for the military members who didn’t have families nearby. He really set a great example of structure while giving team members space to express themselves; his example taught me a lot about how to take care of members of my own corporate team.

What’s your luxiere? -------Michael Thomas: I love restaurants, and not just for the food. When I go out to eat with my family, it’s a chance to spend quality time together over the dinner table. When I go out to eat with my coworkers, it’s a chance to get to know them better outside of a work setting. Of course, I also love having the newest technology. The latest and greatest laptops, TVs, phones, watches, home automation widgets — the tech with the most flashy, whizbang features is my true luxury. Rick Alliss: I’m really into local art. It’s kind of my hobby in a way, keeping up with all the local artists, collecting new pieces. Last year, amshot started hosting a quarterly art show called exhibITion, which became my passion project because it combines my work with my “luxury” and it is something that I’m really passionate about. It’s been an honor to fill our office walls with the work of these incredibly talented Okies.

OF PEARLS AND PENDLETON: by Christine Eddington

THE EXQUISITE SHOP AT THE NATIONAL COWBOY MUSEUM & WESTERN HERITAGE CENTER

Oklahoma’s largest collection of breathtaking, designer pearl jewelry, authentic Navajo jewelry, Pendleton woolens, and boutique-level clothing is tucked away in a location heretofore known only to a dedicated corps of fashionistas and forward-thinkers. Today, you join their ranks. Where, pray tell, is the Xanadu we speak of? It’s the exquisite shop at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and shop manager Laney Carey is the driving force behind it. “My career started in interior design, so when I arrived, I knew I had to create a visual story. Really, the shop was more of a traditional souvenir shop at that time. There were no clothes and no Oklahoma-made products.” Carey set to work, bringing in beautiful clothing lines, jewelry from the likes of Santa Fe luminary Rocki Gorman, and Jackson, Wyoming-based Pearls by Shari, Christina Greene, Teller Indian Jewelry, as well as a spectacular selection of bolo ties, one-of-a-kind and handmade home goods, books and catalogs in support of each exhibition and, of course, sweet trinkets for school kids who roam into the shop, clutching a few dollar bills. The reimagining of the shop has transformed it into a destination within a destination. “We have clients who come in from all across Oklahoma, or who come shop with us any time they are in Oklahoma City. It may be to pick up a unique kilim pillow or a piece of art.”

Prix de West, the Museum’s internationally-renowned invitational art exhibition and sale begins June 7 and heralds the beginning of the shop’s most intensive schedule of trunk shows and events. It’s like Christmas in June. “We’ll have book signings and trunk shows…so many trunk shows. It’s always such an exciting time, and our customers love knowing that every purchase they make goes to support the mission and goals of the National Cowboy Museum & Western Heritage Center,” Carey says.

J. Alexander Medium Stamped Box with Turquoise J. Alexander Rustic Silver has created a line of modern home accessories that comes from the designer’s love of early Navajo silversmiths. Each piece was created in resemblance to the Navajo stamp work of the early 1900’s. Handcrafted from German silver and inset with turquoise, this hinged box has a black velvet lining to safely store your favorite treasures.

omething spectacular and unprecedented is happening in Midtown. Meticulously positioned on a perfect piece of land, a residence more luxurious than anything previously imagined is poised to rise, eight stories high, into the cerulean Oklahoma sky. In cities throughout the world, the most fortunate live in full-service, concierge buildings. Homes within the buildings are privately owned, and ownership brings a level of service and convenience heretofore unseen in our little corner of the country. Grant Willoughby and John Ridley, who together comprise Willoughby Ridley Development, sit across a polished marble conference table from one another, in the sleek converted shipping container-turned high-tech-office on the grounds of what will be a revolutionary piece of architecture for Oklahoma City: The Elliott. Words like revolutionary, unique, and game-changing are bandied about easily and often in real estate circles, but for Oklahoma City and our fair state, The Elliott is a first.

story: Christine Eddington | renderings: Rand Elliott Architects

LUXIERE 57

“E V E R Y

PA RT OF THE BUILDING IS ONEOF-A-KIND. JOHN RIDLEY

Each of the 30 residences within the building will have incredible views, pool, garden and outdoor kitchen access, gorgeous interiors and full-time concierge service. Living at The Elliott will be like living in a Five Star hotel. That means someone is always available to smooth out the details, whether that means bringing your car around, finding you a chef, ordering your groceries, handling your cleaning or any other of a multitude of those little things that make the day chaotic. The Elliott has been designed by world-renowned architect Rand Elliott, who is well-known for his sculptural boathouses and iconic commercial spaces such as Classen Curve, OSU’s Spears School of Business or the soon-to-be-completed Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center. The building is, however, named for Willoughby’s grandfather. The three men met to discuss the project and felt an immediate spark of creative kinship. “One of the first things we look for is chemistry in any project,” Elliott says. “People with harmony of vision tend to find one another, and people come to us because we do unique things. That’s intentional. We look for unique people, doing unique projects. We love challenging projects.”

LU X I E R E H O M E F E AT U R E

This project, The Elliott, is certainly a horse of a different color. “Downtown Oklahoma City is a cacophony of all kinds of buildings,” Elliott says. “What you’re doing as an architect is finding a design solution that is sympathetic to the existing neighborhood but which also looks to the future. The thing you should never do is create fake history. If you build a building in 2019, it can’t look like a building from 1930. I love historic buildings, but that shouldn’t be what we build today.”

Eight floor plans are available, but no two will be alike. “John and I have created four themes or design palettes for residents to choose from to personalize their homes. One is very modern, one is transitional, one is a bit more earthy and another is somewhere in between.” Of course, these can be adapted, or even abandoned, should a buyer so choose. Furthermore, a resident could choose to purchase two homes and combine them for a large, multi-story home, unique in every way.

Elliott is quick to point out that Oklahoma City is ready for a building like The Elliott, and developers Grant Willoughby and John Ridley heartily agree. “Every part of the building is one-of-a-kind,” Ridley says. “There is a library in the lobby, an actual place to sit and enjoy the space. The library will be curated by a series of guests, like Commonplace Books and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which will change quarterly.”

The structure combines 120-year-old brick with a modern glass façade. Windows are placed according to the Golden Ratio, a mathematical ratio commonly found in nature, which is marvelously balanced and harmonious. It is found in the Pyramids of Giza, Da Vinci’s ‘The Mona Lisa,’ and now, The Elliott. When the ratio is used in design, it fosters organic and natural looking compositions that are pleasing to the eye.

Creating luxury living spaces is a natural extension of a decadeslong friendship between Ridley and Willoughby, although the two men each bring a distinct aesthetic style. They met in junior high and were fast friends for the brief period they attended the same school. Both left Oklahoma as young adults, both lived in Los Angeles for a time, and both returned after a decade or more. Willoughby also lived in Nashville and spent years playing guitar and singing in a band. He drives a cool sports car, wears sleek, on-trend, neutral-hued athleisure wear and has a polished, urbane, clean-shaven style. Ridley, whose highlevel Hollywood career included working at Warner Bros. and projects with Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Christian Bale among others, spends much of his time in his fiancé’s hometown of Portland, Oregon. He wears a knit beanie, jeans and a sweatshirt and sports a just-scruffy-enough beard. His vehicle of choice is a quirky little Daihatsu mini-truck, the visual opposite of Willoughby’s Porsche. Together, though, they make magic. “John and Grant are immensely courageous. They want The Elliott to be unique and interesting, and it will be all of that and more,” Elliott says. Each home within The Elliott will have breezy 12-foot ceilings, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, high-design finishes and brilliant views. The glass face of the building directly faces the Devon Tower. The brick side has a little bit of a bend, “a reference to the neighborhood to its north and the older buildings surrounding it,” Elliott says. Rather than outdoor terraces (which, if we’re honest, are only pleasant a few days a year in Oklahoma’s unique climate), there are “skyboxes”, as Elliott calls them. “They are little areas where you can step out into space. Maybe place a desk or a lounge chair there. They’re a spot to read, pet a dog, ponder and wonder. The skyboxes are a lovely, romantic gesture,” Elliott says. At this writing, three residences have been snapped up in quick succession, and nine more are fast on their heels. “It’s time for Oklahoma City to have a project like this,” Elliott says.
