Have you just re-entered real life after a whirlwind of summer travel? Bring your journeys into your home décor in meaningful, beautiful ways. Our resident design expert Travis Morelock tells us how. No coffee mugs involved, we promise.
On the edge of the bastion of gentility known as Nichols Hills, those in the know will find acres of beautiful produce and a woman who grows twenty varieties of tomatoes and a bounty of other fruits and vegetables. She’ll share it with you when you join her CSA – you’ll get impeccable, much more healthful produce and gain a deeper appreciation for locally-sourced food.

COMFORTABLE SURROUNDINGS As summer begins its slow slide into fall, days begin to shorten, and we begin to spend more of our time indoors. We move back into our homes, so to speak, and as we do so, our indoor surroundings become crucial. The science of how design of any kind affects our health and wellbeing is in its infancy, but what’s clear is that beautiful design has made our lives better. Some of us have been moved by a beautiful piazza in an ancient city, the interior of a soaring cathedral, or the calming beauty of a welldesigned spa. The buildings we occupy and the cities we live in can be designed not only to reduce stress, but to contribute to our healing and well-being.
the imagery photographer JD Merryweather brings us from his recent travels closely captures the feeling. See Norway through his lens starting on page 44. As always, we’ve got fashion on our minds, but what makes this issue’s spread different is that we’ve taken a high-fashion approach to upcycling, and it’s incredibly beautiful. The joy we feel in bringing you the best of Oklahoma, in every issue, simply cannot be overstated. We hope you feel it too.
Perhaps nobody knows that more than the Thomson family, one of Oklahoma City’s first families of design, who specialize in creating beautiful living spaces, starting with a hand-drawn rendering and ending with a perfectly-customized, timeless interior design. You’ll learn more about their process on page 52. We often spend more time in our work spaces than we do in our homes. Knowing that, it seems especially apropos that what Jason Thompson has created at Track 13. His ravishing, newly renovated historic building seems to bridge the gap between work life and life. It’s an opulent, functional space, replete with a beautiful gym, showers, climate-controlled parking and all the amenities you’ll ever want. See what all the fuss is about on page 40. In Norway, there’s a special word for the kind of coziness and community that happens during the fall and winter months: hygge. There is no parallel word in English, but

LET TRAVEL INSPIRE YOUR HOME
WILSHIRE CABINET + CO
Oklahoma’s summer heat is definitely in full force and if you are anything like me, you love to escape to cooler climates and take in some great sights during this time of the year! Traveling is one of the best ways to relax, let your stresses melt away, and create lasting memories with friends and family. But then, in the blink of an eye, you are back to the daily grind. Don’t let your next trip slip by without finding the perfect memento to incorporate into your home decor. Some people might grab a coffee mug or shot glass…and then into a cabinet it goes, without ever being seen again. Not that there is anything wrong with this practice (although the anti-hoarding side of me is hyperventilating just thinking about it), but I think cherished reminders of meaningful times are valuable to our quality of life. I want your souvenir to bring a smile to your face each time that you see it – and that means out in the open for you to admire.

My favorite places to display these keepsakes are in the more private areas of your home. Think master bedroom or master bathroom. Think guest room or guest bath. Think home office. These are the rooms that only your closest friends and family will see while giving you great memories to talk about or wonderful experiences to share. I suggest bringing your trip back home with you in one of a few key ways:
1. The Collectible: Finding that perfect sculpture or sentimental item to remind you of beautiful culture or environment from your trip is a great way to keep memories fresh and top-of-mind. For those who read my column regularly, you know of my personal aversion to visual chaos. Should you choose a collectible, make sure you select substantial pieces and highlight them so they don’t get lost in your décor or create clutter. There are so many innovative ways to display the perfect piece or group of pieces. One of the ways that I like to showcase collectibles is behind glass, in more of a museum-like fashion. The guys at City Glass in downtown OKC are well versed in this art. They have created so many unique shelves and display cabinets that command attention and preserve your find. Bonus: it also keeps the grandkids from treating precious artifacts as toys…
2. The Fabric: There are so many stunning fabrics from all corners of the globe! Consider bringing a true piece of art home with you – whether it be an article of clothing or bed linen. The beauty of fabric is that it doesn’t have to maintain its original purpose or shape. From transforming that colorful shawl you purchased at the beach into a one-of-a-kind accent pillow to giving the handmade blanket you brought back a second life as drapes or an ottoman, the talented folks at Harrison Fabrics & Drapery Co. in Casady Square can assist you in all of your fabric needs.
3. The Photo: One of the easiest ways to bring those memories home with you is with photographs. Don’t let that incredible shot just live on your phone, tablet or computer! Get in your time machine and go back to a time when we actually printed photos! A picture can become priceless art with the right print size, print quality, and perfect frame. The team at Framed in the Village on North May will assist you in creating a vibrant expression through perfect cropping, framing and matting. Surrounding yourself with reminders of your travel will make you happy each time that you pass them. They are a wonderful way to remember and share the great experiences you have had with friends and family and can also add depth and a curated feeling to your décor. As I always say, “Friends don’t let friends drink and decorate,” so put down that Pina Colada or Rum Runner Special and search for that special reminder to bring a piece of paradise back to Oklahoma.

Cultivating a Healthy Relationship S T O R Y B Y T O R R Y L E O N A R D | P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y R YA N M A G N A N I
amala Gamble, farm-to-table chef and owner of Kam’s Kookery, also owns Guilford Gardens, a local Community Supported Agriculture farm. Nestled in the edge of Nichols Hills on the quiet street of Guilford Lane is a bright yellow house, and behind the happy facade of a normal suburban home is a food lover’s oasis. An immediate sense of calm and relaxation comes over you as you walk past the beautiful flower garden that transitions to a lush green lawn and then opens up to two acres of the most wonderful, delicious produce, including a chicken coop for eggs. It was incredible to see a field of beautiful tomatoes and to hear about the work and passion Kamala has for each of the over twenty varieties growing there. As we walked her grounds and talked about her farm, we had such a passionate conversation about what real food is, what it looks like, and why members of a CSA are truly changing their relationship with food and their health. She explained the process of just how grocery store produce reaches the consumer and is almost three weeks old and less nutritious by the time you buy it! For example, many types of tomatoes are harvested green, refrigerated, then “gassed” to ripen them once they get to their destination. Refrigeration causes a chemical reaction in the tomato that affects flavor, so the shipping process affects the flavor and texture as well as the nutritional value. Kamala truly embodies the best farm-to-table chef, wanting each person to know where the food was grown, how it was tended, and who produced it with such pride and care.

When you buy from your farmer using a CSA, you are getting the same day’s produce, ripened in the sun, ready for you to eat. Your produce in your bag for the week will have a higher nutritional content than anything at the store; local produce is nutritionally superior because local farmers use compost, crop cover, and crop rotation to ensure the soil is going to provide the best nourishment for their crop. Supporting your local CSA and shopping at local farmer’s markets are vital to the success of local farmers. By purchasing from your local farmer in a CSA agreement, you are engaging in direct communication with your farmer and ensuring a guaranteed market for their produce. This allows them to invest their time in making sure their crops are among the best. It supports biodiversity in their farms on a small level, and on a larger level, supports diversity in agriculture and encourages seasonal eating.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT CSA
16 LUXIERE
I asked Dr. Laura Miles, MD, Edmond physician and nutritional specialist, to weigh in on the advantages of organic and locally grown foods. Her answer, “Our food has changed dramatically in the last several decades. So many of our foods are now genetically modified (GMO), which usually also means there are more pesticides used on those foods. The nutrient value has also suffered with poor farming practices as well as the GMO movement. Organic food typically has a higher nutrient value and is not GMO. Local farmers take great pride in the quality of their soil, which directly impacts the nutrient value of the food they produce. It is very expensive to be graded as an organic farmer, so just because they don’t say organic doesn’t mean they aren’t using organic farming principles. Get to know your local producers and understand their farming practices, as prices are often cheaper than produce in the grocery store and are healthier for you!”
When you have a relationship with your farmer, and you’ve walked on the soil that nourishes your food, you have made a connection with your food, and eating is the single most personal thing you will do. At Guilford Gardens, we sampled the divine sun ripened tomatoes, we talked about personal responsibility for our health and how eating vegetables can nourish our body. It may be just a box of vegetables, but with it comes a relationship with a farmer who will show you where your food comes from, allow your children to pick their dinner, educate you on seasonal eating, facilitate relationships with other local farmers, and help you develop a lasting relationship with your health through your food.
Why should you join?
How does it work?
The relationship you will create with your food and your farmer are the single most important relationship you will create. You will know where your food comes from, it will help you eat seasonally, and it will support the local economy.
Each week a bag of 7-8 different types or produce are harvested and delivered or picked up by you. Getting your fresh produce each week encourages any consumer to eat well, eat seasonally, and get creative with their vegetable consumption!

lot of attention has been paid to eyebrows over the past few years. We have gone from the tiny pencil line of the 80s to the full brow in the 2000s and all the extremes in between. Brows grow in the shape of our orbital bone, creating definition and structure for our eyes and forehead. Thankfully a natural, defined brow creates an enhanced look without overpowering the face. Whether you have lost all of your brows or are maintaining full coverage growth, there are tools for any need in this modern makeup age.
THE OPTIONS: TOOL KIT Pencil - Great for thinning hair, it’s going to attach to the skin and stay put. Perfect for drawing in the hairline (Caution - can look overdone if not careful) Cream and Brush - Waterproof option for oily skin or those with no hair remaining. You can brush on a hair-like shape that still looks natural but won’t smudge off. Brow Gel - Clear grooming tool, for those who have curly or hard-to-tame hairs that just need a little help smoothing. Fiber Tint - My personal fav! Use if you have hair but it’s a little lacking in volume and color. The fibers attach to existing hair and fluff them up while adding a hint of color, leaving a gel finish to set in place. Powder and Brush - This is a great option for definition of color. It’s going to attach color to the skin and hair, creating a more polished look. Dye - Low key monthly option for those who have hair and just need a little pop. A stylist drops color into the brows for you, and you’re done.

tips for picking the right color It can go right or oh-so-wrong. Pick a color the same as the root of your hair shade. Good guidelines are: Blondes - Stay in that ashy grey brown tone; be mindful of auburn based blonde shades that pull too much red. Brunettes - Follow the natural tone of your full hair color; warmth and depth are your friends. Black - Usually use a deep espresso or dark brown with a black undertone. Pastels – My personal preference, but I generally follow the natural root tone of your hair.
BRUSH AND PRODUCT HOW TO: Start by loading a generous amount of product onto your brush and gently tap off the excess. Begin at the bottom of the brow hair line, creating a soft defined line across and making sure to follow the full length of the brow bone. It generally ends at a line from the nose to the lash line as a guide (There are guides online if you need a visual). Then use your brush in gentle upward motions, pulling the product from the root to the top of the hair line. Finish using a spooly (Yes that little weird brush at the other end!). It’s a magic eraser for brows. Use it to pull and comb the product through the brow hairs so it looks polished but not overdone. Brows are sisters, not twins, so don’t get too hung up on perfection. The intention is to create a picture frame for your eyes so that they do not get lost in your forehead and hairline. You can use the same technique for brow gel, tints, creams, powders or pencils.
“Intrinsic, esoteric, dynamic, cosmic, prosaic, therapeutic, rhapsodic, terrific.” ORA+CLE, a vehicle for finding meaning and magic. Creating a daily intention ritual does not have to be timely in manner. I have found as summer is winding down, school schedules are starting and the fall shuffle of life begins. Making time for these moments becomes more challenging and yet now is when my soul needs them the most. Card pulling has become a wonderful quick tool that still brings my mind to focus on my body and set an intention each day. Pause, take a deep breath, pull a card, read, set intention for the day. Sometimes it is a challenge, a small reminder that this world is bigger than ourselves. Other times it’s a little nudge to look inward. There are cards for all walks of faith and life. Angel cards, plant cards, animal cards, tarot cards, color cards, creative spark cards—you name it there is a card deck that speaks to you, your spirit and soul. Keep collecting the tools that help us grow and come back to ourselves, because isn’t that the real work we are here to do?

“I believe that there are things that need to be created in this world,” says local fashion designer Crystal Emerson, as her green eyes dance in her sunlit studio. “It’s almost as if the ideas are floating around the universe, waiting for a human to make them exist; sometimes I don’t feel ownership of the ideas because they’re coming from somewhere else, but it’s my duty to bring them to life. “ Emerson’s presence mirrors the style of her pieces - quirky and warm with just the right amount of edge. From printed palazzo pants to tailored urban wear, Emerson is not afraid to delve into unusual designs. Here, we chat with the designer about the soundtracks behind her designs, her love for thrifting, and what to expect from her future collections.

Different things propel you toward your dream - sometimes those things are bad and painful, and sometimes it can be out of sheer boredom. For me, there were some personal things that happened, and I just knew I had to do something to keep myself creative and distracted. Things get thrown at you and you have to have some kind of way to be creative or you’ll implode, and that’s exactly what fashion design was for me. It’s good to have that vision because it helps you navigate through the crummy stuff. Everyone has these personal terrible crises that happen and you either let it destroy you or you pull up your bootstraps and do something with it - and that’s what I chose to do.

When I was younger, I would go into my grandmother’s closet and dress up in her clothes from the 50’s and 60’s and I’d wear them to school. By the time seventh grade came around, the movie, “Pretty in Pink” came out, which was a big influence on me. I remember my friend and I wore my grandmother’s old hats and brooches to the movie (I’ve always played dress up for any opportunity I could find). When the main character is sewing her dress in the movie, I had a moment where I knew that’s exactly what I wanted to do. That really lead me to thrifting and recreating pieces into how I had envisioned them to be.

I learned how to sew from my friend’s mother and aunt. We all sewed together every Monday, and that was such a pivotal point for me. It was so beautiful sewing with these two women who were strong, independent, funny and creative. We would listen to The Beatles while we worked and it was one of my warmest memories. After the Monday sewing sessions ended, I realized I had the passion, and I had the taste of starting a piece and finishing it from beginning to end. I wanted to learn more about draping, so I decided to enroll in OSU’s apparel design program. I started school four years ago and I thought I would be done after draping, but more design classes started catching my attention. I’m just riding the canoe on a river, floating and seeing where it leads me. It’s beautiful and new and fresh and I don’t know what the plan is, honestly. But that’s okay - that’s the best part to me. LUXIERE 25

My junior collection was all inspired by a song, Mucha Muchacha by Esquivel. When I first heard the melody, my mind was filled with camp, joyful clothes floating around and I needed to bring them to life. I listened to this song throughout the entire process of creating this collection - it guided me through each piece.
Q
FUTURE COLLECTIONS?
My senior collection is inspired by the song, Anytime Cowboy by Country Teasers. The collection is going to be full of beautiful gowns with Western influences to embrace my Texan/Oklahoman roots, but also with a bit of a punk rock twist - it’s a bit of a testament to who I am. OSU also inspired this collection - I can’t tell you how many silver belt buckles I see walking to class and it’s just so kitschy and cool. I’m also creating a side collection for OSU, which was inspired by the soundtrack from the movie, Little Miss Sunshine. I was listening to it and I started crying and got visions in my head of white garments across a woman’s life cycle - starting with maternity, then toddler, child, tween, teenager, twenties, wedding day, middle age, and old age. The models will all be different ages to represent each phase of life.

I love having garments that confuse people. I want people to walk away feeling inspired to incorporate something old and vintage into their look. I remember being a teenager looking through fashion magazines and thinking, “I can totally recreate this look by going to Goodwill,” and I’ve been doing exactly that ever since.

I think Oklahoma is ripe because we’re right in the middle of it all, and we don’t have outside influences bombarding us all the time. In cities like New York City or Los Angeles, things are constantly coming at you, and there’s no time to be still. That stillness is when you can be quiet and the idea can come to you. I feel like in Oklahoma, we have the advantage of quiet stillness, and we need to listen to that and embrace it.
Q
FUTURE GOALS?
There’s a class called functional design at OSU that I can’t wait to take. What I really want to do with that is create some clothes for people with disabilities like Bell’s palsy, epilepsy, or dementia. My grandmother has dementia and she takes her clothes off all the time! So as a designer, you have to make a piece that ties all the way in the back so they can’t get it off. I’ve thought about putting a functional design piece in the elderly stage of the life span collection. I would love for my grandmother to be the final woman in the Life Cycle fashion show.
My studio is my wonderland. All the ideas and thoughts that come to me throughout the day are culminated in this space. Because of this, I feel like it’s a very sacred space. - C R Y S TA L E M E R S O N

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL KINNEY
A HAT FINISHES THE STORY Chris Khrais knows how to put together a man’s wardrobe. The couturier of men’s clothing has been selling clothes since 1984, initially working out of the trunk of his car in Tulsa. Now the owner of Pinpoint Resource Fine Wear, Khrais sells pants, jackets, shirts and suits, but he says no outfit is finished without the right hat to go with it. “It completes you,” Khrais explained. In 2009, Khrais moved his haberdashery from North Penn Plaza to its current location at 50 Penn Place, located across the street from Penn Square Mall. The shopping center houses only a few retail businesses these days, but it serves as the perfect environment for a clothing store that’s bringing back a style from a seemingly bygone age. Around the time that Khrais moved Pinpoint Resources to its current home, he began to hear from his customers that they wanted something more from him than just clothes. “My customers were always asking me for hats, so I started carrying hats,” Khrais said. “I started with a few of them and I found I was getting good results. Then I went a little bit extra - I started carrying more and more hats and really getting into it as well. As you can see by my display, I have tried to be more creative.” Pinpoint Resources stocks a selection of as many as 100 hats, but none are baseball caps, visors or snapbacks. Even though the casual look seems to be the preferred style of many men, Khrais caters to the gentleman who wants to look sharp and turn heads when he steps outside his door. Pinpoint Resource’s inventory includes such styles as fedoras, the trilby, the Panama,

bowlers, the flat cap and the pork pie – all classic styles from the past, but perfect for the man whose personal style is timeless. “I'm learning from my customers, believe it or not,” Khrais said. “They are the ones teaching me about hats, especially the older guys who have been wearing them for a long, long time. They tell me what's right and what's in.” Khrais has watched as the trend in hat wear has slowly started to move back toward a bold and a more personally distinctive look as men seek to stand out from the crowd. It's not just athletes and celebrities who are adopting the look. Pinpoint Resource will soon start a service that will allow its customers to make their hats into even more of a personal statement. “It's going to be every person has his own hats. We'll take the hat; we'll work some kind of design on to it.” Khrais said. “It will be your hat only; it will be something different. Something that no one else has. It's going to be artwork. It's going to be like one of a kind, made just for you.” What a man chooses to wear is telling a story to the outside world. From the shirt all the way down to shoes and socks, he is informing the world who he is and what he is about. To Khrais, the right hat completes the look and finishes the story. Pinpoint Resource is located on the second floor 50 Penn Place and open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Sundays, when the shop opens at 12:30 p.m. You can call Chris at (405) 767-9700 or shop online at Pinpointwear.com.

TRACK 13: A NEW WAY TO WORK Track 13 is Oklahoma City’s first true-luxury office building, and the concept is brilliant. Amenities range from the extremely practical to the super-posh, and the entire space is jaw-dropping beautiful. But the spacious building on Northwest 13th, adjacent to the railroad tracks, had to wait many decades for its star turn. Jason Thompson bought what was originally a root beer bottling factory, moved his corporate offices into it, and waited. He knew he wanted to open up the space, but the building had been remodeled and renovated so many times that it had become a web of catacombs. “It was hard to see what was behind all the sheetrock,” Thompson says. “It had eight-foot, dropped ceilings. When we lifted the tiles, it was like ‘Oh my goodness, there are windows!’” As he continued to tear away walls, more beautiful details revealed themselves. “It was almost as though the building was talking to me as we worked on it. We removed walls in the loft and found a beautiful elevator door, stamped 1939. We cleaned out the shaft, added windows and we’re going to install high-power grow lights and plant bamboo, which you’ll be able to see from each floor.”

Modern details and amenities like polished concrete floors, state-of-the-art video and teleconferencing equipment, lightning fast Wi-Fi, breathtakingly beautiful board rooms, a spa-level gym, a spin/yoga room, and even showers. “You can come, work out, and have a space where you can truly get ready for work. Or you can walk into the gym at lunch or after a full day and be able to clean up after your workout,” he says. Two well-equipped kitchens, two impressive conference rooms, optional parking in a climate-controlled garage, and common spaces which can be used for client events are all part of office life at Track 13. High-tech printers, postage machines and other office equipment are on-site, and the building is on the streetcar route. “This is the building for people who need all of the amenities, but who don’t want to deal with all of the overhead,” Thompson says. “We do that for you.”

Denmark – land of the Vikings, now ruled by Michelin-starred chefs of “New Nordic Cuisine.” Home of Copenhagen, frequently rated as one of the happiest places on earth - sorry, Disney! Danes invented their own word for how amazing their lives are – hygge - that feeling of coziness that oozes out of every adorable nook and cranny in the country. Whether you are seeking antique buildings or mod furniture, you will find it in Denmark. This is a place where bicycles outnumber people, where they have all but eliminated waste, and where the entire population is crazy about jumping into the impossibly clean ocean waters that surround this land on all sides, except for the tiny border with Germany, which is all that attaches it to the continent of Europe.

O
ur first evening in Copenhagen we found our way to Kodbyens Fiskbar, a warehouselike building in the Meatpacking District. The place was packed shoulder to shoulder with people crammed around the bar and waiting to get in. Not having a reservation, we took our chances on the stand-by list and elbowed our way to the bar for bubbles and oysters – a pairing that we both could happily survive on for the rest of our lives. We started with a snack of Fjordshrimps – tiny little shrimp, flash fried in their shells, served in a paper cone, and eaten whole…shells, heads, antennae, legs and all. Each was about the size of a kernel of popcorn and, once you got past the sensation of eating bugs, was delicious. But oysters were our mission! They offered up six varieties, four from France and two from Denmark. The best oysters in the world come from France, and the Fines de Romegous from Marennes were spectacular, but, this isn’t a story about France, is it?! The two varieties from Demark were distinctive in their own ways. The Gigas oyster is invasive in the waters of Limfjorden; consequently, we are encouraged to eat them and eat them often. And they are very good! The wild oysters from the same waters are in fact the last original wild oysters in Europe and they taste…well, they taste a bit like an aquarium smells! When we finally got called to a table, we both opted for the six-course wine dinner that included scallops with crunchy pork; halibut poached in seaweed with oyster emulsion and Brussels sprouts; hake with green asparagus, horseradish, cucumber and Spanish chervil; marinated rhubarb with rhubarb sorbet, and sesame miso cake and Woodruff oil. Kodbyens Fiskbar was an unplanned splurge, but turned out to be one of our favorite meals in Denmark. When in Copenhagen, one must partake of “New Nordic Cuisine”. If you visited Demark twenty years ago, you needed an appetite for traditional seafood, because shrimp and fish dominated the menu. However, fifteen years ago a little restaurant called Noma skyrocketed Danish cuisine from dried-fish obscurity to smokedpine-infused cod over a bed of hand-picked asparagus
48 LUXIERE
the city stardom. The New Nordic cuisine makes the very most of what the land and sea – seafood still tops the food chain - has to offer, and best of all, it is sustainable. Sustainability, ingenuity, perseverance, and daring define New Nordic Cuisine. Noma is now the best restaurant in the world; we could not get in. We did make it to their little sister, 108, but it took some planning and research. Reservations are open at 108 two months in advance, and we were astute enough to get them that much in advance. Purveyors of New Nordic Cuisine forage for the ingredients of their seasonal menus in the woods, fields, and beaches in close proximity to where the food is prepared. Noma and 108 are the foraging pioneers of the cuisine and they are expert at creating stunning dishes out of even the most obscure finds. Our eight-course journey through springtime in Copenhagen included steamed egg yolk potatoes with Belgian caviar, rutabaga and gooseberry salad, sturgeon three ways (including the spinal cord), a mousse of quail heart and kidney (for the most adventurous of eaters only!) followed by the whole quail lacquered like a Peking Duck and accompanied by leeks served in an aged cheese sauce that we could have guzzled straight from a vat. If Denmark were known for only two things, they would be its New Nordic Cuisine and its outrageous knack for design, for it is home of Finn Juhl (architect and furniture designer) and Poul Henningsen (architect turnedlighting-designer) and so many other top designers. A trip to Copenhagen must include a visit to the Design Museum Denmark. Do not let the antique exterior of the museum fool you: once inside, it is like walking through a mid-century modern fun house. Of everything in the extensive permanent collection, The Danish Chair: An International Affair is clearly the stand-out. Through a brilliantly displayed tunnel of chairs, visitors learn how Danish design became a world-wide phenomenon due to what we rest our derrieres on. Entering the exhibit feels a bit like entering a space station – the octagon tunnel features three levels of chairs on each wall arching over the passageway.

beyond the city Copenhagen will almost certainly be your landing spot for a visit to Denmark, but do yourself a favor, get out of the city! Denmark is incredibly easy to drive in and if you happen to visit in early May, you will be treated to endless fields of rapeseed (canola) blooms, which can only be described as the glowing yellow rival to the lavender fields of southern France in the summer. Yes, we did find a quiet country road where we could satisfy our photographers’ need to capture the sight, but we were respectful of the bees, which were everywhere, and confined ourselves in the car as we continued to be amazed with the landscape. Just north of Copenhagen is another highlight for the culture-conscious traveler: The Louisiana Museum is a must for modern and contemporary art lovers. The museum is accessible without a car, but if you take the train you will miss a lovely coastal drive. We drove past the famous Arne Jacobsen (yet another Danish architect and designer) service station to a lovely brunch at a roadside

kept secret in seafood buffets. We lucked onto this treasuretrove of shellfish by randomly picking a second-story local establishment called Jacob’s Fiskerestaurant. Although fluent enough in Danish to know that fiske means seafood, we were unprepared for the bounty that lay before us. We started modestly with a nice bottle of Gruner and a little sample of everything – smoked, steamed, salad, and raw – but by our second hour, we were on to pints of Carlsberg and making trip after trip to the buffet for the langoustines and crab claws. It is fair to say that we outstayed our welcome and the buffet lost money on us. Amid the disapproving, sideways glances from Jacob’s staff, we hit the road for Skagen. café. The museum sits perched on a hill overlooking the ocean and is housed in a vast property that is a mix of antique and modern design. Visitors can experience art from Monet to Ai Weiwei. The Giacometti gallery overlooking the pond is a clear favorite, and the surrounding grounds boast an impressive sculpture collection with the likes of Alexander Calder and Richard Serra. Perhaps it is the location itself, though, that is the star here – one can gaze out on the endless sea. Our first stop outside of Copenhagen was clear across the regions of Zealand, Funen, and Southern Jutland until we reached the oldest town in the country, Ribe. Pronounced a soft “reee-bay,” (explains why no one knew where we were going when we told them) is a town first established in the 9th century. It is quiet, romantic, and so far removed from the over tourism of Copenhagen that we felt almost like intruders on some local Danish secret weekend get-away. There is a canal that runs through town, snaking its way twenty miles or so inland from the western seashore, complete with water wheels, swans, and a perfectly placed rowboat anchored under a willow tree. Once you get out of the larger cities in Denmark, you leave the New Nordic Cuisine behind for more traditional Scandinavian fare – meat, potatoes, and seafood, and boy, does this country love their shrimp salad on white bread! For dinner in Ribe, we tried two local traditional establishments – Kolvig and Weis Stu – housed in charming, historic buildings, and both, surprisingly, with a wait list – where did these people come from?? The food was hearty, filling almost to the point of discomfort, and thank goodness we had a sweet little town with quaint streets to walk off our dinners. From Ribe, we headed north. While the town of Skagen (pronounced like a skein of yarn) is easily reached by train, if you drive you can stop in the seaside town of Saeby: a sleepy, little swath of a place, with what has to be the world’s best-
The main reason for the trek to Skagen was to experience Grenen, the northern-most tip of Denmark. At the peninsula of sand that stretches into the ocean, you are able to stand between two seas - The Kattegat and the Skagerrak - whose currents and temperatures collide, resulting in a visual divide of waters. Quite a sight, it is best experienced from about a half mile away, standing on dunes dotted with WWII German bunkers. Our day in the North was windy, like wind we don’t even experience in Oklahoma: sustained 60 mph, unrelenting, and brutal. From Grenen, we were off to find Rubjerg Knude – the lighthouse that is doomed to a watery demise in mere years. It was built on Lonstrup Klint, one of the highest points in Northern Denmark. The massive dune is rapidly (in geological terms) creeping inland. Our visit was like walking through the Sahara during a great haboob. Every bit of skin had to be covered or risk being sandblasted by the winds and swirling sands. Although the hike up the dune is less than a mile, the wind and sand made it feat of strength, though we could easily rest by leaning into the wind. The lighthouse itself can be seen from quite a distance, perched on the sands in the most dramatic fashion. The coastline is eroding at a rate of five feet per year and Rubjerg Knude’s crash into the ocean is somewhere between four and six years away. Note: we recently (post trip) learned that the Danish government is making plans to move/ save the lighthouse before it is undercut by the winds and sand. The ocean, the wind, freak hail storms in near-freezing springtime weather make Denmark a place that has borne truly hearty peoples throughout time. Vikings to designers, ancient Scandinavian hunters to contemporary new Nordic foragers, Denmark is…wild…and in all ways seems to have made its inhabitants blissfully happy – except Hamlet, of course!

THOMSON& THOMSON OLD-FASHIONED TECHNIQUE MEETS MODERN METHOD BY CHRISTINE EDDINGTON INTERIOR PHOTOGR APHY KENNON BRYCE
On a blazing summer day, a trio of Thomsons stand in a cluster, intently mulling the precise proposed placement of four family-heirloom framed sketches on a wall between the kitchen and living areas of a massive Nichols Hills project. Father, along with daughter and son squint, stand back, lean in, studying with the focus of a surgeon as they chat back and forth. “Dad, what do you think?” daughter Cody asks. “It’s looking good,” Cam replies, head thoughtfully cocked to the side, as son Ashford nods. The placement of the sketches is a crucial detail because, in true Thomson & Thomson style, the sketches are a surprise for the homeowner. They were drawn by her father, and Ashford, Cody and Cam were given the man’s entire sketchbook, along with carte blanche as to sketch choice and placement. Spoiler alert: the client loved both.
Sure, every designer will tell you that details are important, but in the Thomsons’ world, attention to detail is literally in their DNA. “My father founded Interiors by Ron Thomson in 1955,” Cam says. When Cam went to work in the family business, the name changed to Thomson & Thomson, then he and his dad each worked independently of one another, and now it’s Cam, Cody and Ashford. One could even say that Cody and Ashford are products of the family business. Cam met his wife Dencie in 1977, when she joined the firm as an intern. The pair married three years later, and as Cam half-jokingly says, “Dad was mad because I stole his intern.” Soon, the couple added four more Thomsons to their brood, two of which attended Savannah College of Art & Design and entered the family business.
LUXIERE 55
“Together, we bring the old school and the new generation together,” Cam says. Ashford agrees, as does sister Cody. “We don’t even try to change him. He draws everything by hand and we scan it in,” she says. Cam works, like his father before him, at a drafting table, with pencils, drafting equipment and markers. Lots of markers, hundreds of colors, from bastions of artistic illustration like Prismacolor and Chartpak fill an entire wall in Cam’s studio space. “If there is a floorplan, I’ll start by laying out the scale of the floorplan. Scale is everything. You’ve got to get the space around the tables, the size of the furniture and all of that right. So I start there,” Cam says. “Cam’s drawings will be accurate to the inch. It’s incredible,” Ashford says. “Once he’s got it drawn, he’ll hand it off to us and say ‘fill it with furniture.’” The rendering is crucial to the process because it enables both client and designer to see the finished product, making it a tangible goal to work toward.
56 LUXIERE
The ability to present a client with a hand-drawn, beautiful rendering is a skill Cam inherited from Thomson & Thomson patriarch and founder, his father Ron. “Presentation is everything,” Cam says. As the younger Thomsons identify furnishings and fixtures that will fit the vision of the space, Cam draws those into the room. In the case of the Nichols Hills home they’re working on, the client requested a monochromatic palette. She wanted a cozy, contemporary home, but also a setting that would allow her to showcase her top-notch art collection. Her kids are grown, so light colors were not something she was afraid of. “We created a beautiful, white, airy setting that would allow her art to pop,” Cody said. “We used durable, dog-friendly fabrics on furnishings, added some built-ins in the study and changed a lot of the fixtures in the home.”
LUXIERE 57
The three Thomsons, whose personal design styles are as different as they are, find it to be a natural fit to come together as a team. “We each sort of rebelled against going into the design business,” Cody says. She and Ashford each studied photography, not interior design. Their father majored in advertising design. But destiny called each of them and, one by one they joined the family trade. “My very first project was finishing up my grandfather’s very last project,” Cody says. Consider the circle complete.
