efore Hannah Schmitt first opened the doors to The Treasury on Nov. 1, 2018, she admits she was jaded. Whether it was from her own experiences or tales from others, she was wary of going into a business that catered specifically to women. But in the year that the co-working space has been open in downtown Oklahoma City, owning and running The Treasury has taught Schmitt one very important lesson. “The biggest lesson that I am taking away from this first year is that people are good. I came into this a little bit jaded,” Schmitt said. “But the past year, watching the way women have helped other women in this space has been such a learning opportunity for somebody who witnessed that women can be catty and selfish and only out for themselves. Opening this space has really taught me that women really are nice to each other; women do just want to help each other.” The Treasury (10 North Lee) is not like the co-working spaces that have been popping up around Oklahoma. Co-owners Hannah and Brian Schmitt wanted it to be an oasis for women to be able to come together and learn, support and build up in an environment that they may not be able to find in a normal office setting. In other words, a community. “We are a co-working space for women. We provide women with resources and relationships for them to succeed at home and at work,” Schmitt said. “They are going to be surrounded by women who help them grow their business, who hire them, answer questions for them, mentor them. We are unique in that our space is more about the programs and events

8

that we have here than the physical space. The space is great, but you could find that somewhere else. You could rent an office if you want, but it’s not going to come with this built-in support system of women who want you to succeed at what you’re doing.”

“Men have their own challenges. Women, especially women in Oklahoma City, the members who are here and the people who come through for our programs and events, a lot of their problems are specific to being female.” However, when Schmitt met with Eric Fleske of Fleske Holding Company, he was so impressed with the concept that he offered to lease out the entire block to female-owned businesses. “I didn’t think he would really do it, because he is a developer and at the end of the day he has to make money,” Schmitt said. “But sure enough, he leased out to Sweet Yield Studio, Salt & Water Co., and The Wild Mother, all female-owned businesses. So he just really caught on to what we’re trying to achieve and has really helped female entrepreneurs here on Film Row.” However, Fleske said it was his wife and partner, Nova, who was the impetus behind filling the block with female entrepreneurs.

The Treasury currently has eight members who pay $350 per month. “That’s a lot to ask somebody,” Schmitt said. “Our members who have bought in have found the connections they make at the Treasury to more than make up that rental fee. But that is not a tangible thing you can show somebody. They are going out on a limb to believe my business is going to grow to make up this money.” The idea to tailor The Treasury toward women was not one that many people jumped on board with at first. Landlords and real estate developers wanted Schmitt to make it for women and men. But that was not what she wanted. “I think men and women have very different challenges at work,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt wants the Treasury members to get the most out of their community as possible. But she also wants other women to come and take part in the events and programs the Treasury hosts throughout the month. That is the way their community will be its most effective. “When they can do that in a safe environment that’s only female, there is just something different,” Schmitt said. “The feedback from members has been tremendous. The relationships they find are so different from any other environment. There is something really special about having another woman, maybe more or even less experienced than you, just come and give their perspective. It’s been very helpful to our members.”

“That day was so impactful and changed so many lives, and it was terrifying for all of us but ironically there were so many positives, as well. Everyone immediately just stepped up. There was no panic at the news station, people bravely stood up and did their jobs. I saw it all first-hand, and it took a while to process. We didn’t go off the air for days, and I remember looking to the sort of elder statesmen in the newsroom and I saw them stay calm, so I stayed calm and worked. That was important. Through that tragedy, people didn’t falter. It’s a perspective I’ve kept with me,” Harrison says. Staying calm and focusing on the work is key in a business like his. He does still occasionally encounter a situation, or person, that rattles him, but those are few and far between. When asked if he’s ever been nervous to interview someone, he immediately says “Jerry Seinfeld.” Do tell. “I’m a huge fan. He’s so smart, and I love his comedy. But he’s very East Coast, and I’d heard he’s a tough interview. And he is. I just dove in, and it really did not go great. He likes to make you sweat,” Harrison says, laughing. “George Clooney, on the other hand, is so gracious and nice. It’s like he knows it’s your job, so he tries to give you a good interview. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are lovely, too. They stopped on a red carpet and said ‘It’s so weird; we always see you in our bedroom’, which was really sweet.” The Bachelor and its offspring are certainly highprofile, and we couldn’t help but wonder, so we asked: would Harrison want his teenage son or daughter to be on his show? “I don’t know if I would want them to, but I wouldn’t stop them. I’d remind them that Dad is always watching!”

I was honored, but I wasn’t sure, so I called two of my best friends and said ‘Should I?’ and if I do, then what can I do? How can I use the opportunity to help. ~ Chris Harrison

THE ARTISAN

Musical Chairs

STORY BY KIANA MORIDI P H O T O S B Y R YA N M A G N A N I

With any event comes preparation, and the grand opening of 70-acre Scissortail Park was no exception. From architecture to layout design, it takes a village to put the pieces together. Here, we chat with local furniture showroom Urban Farmhouse Designs, about creating custom pieces for the park’s two-story greenroom, where performers can rest and prepare. The room was first settled in by rock band Kings of Leon (quite impressive first occupants, if you ask us). Urban Farmhouse General Manager Kat Daggs and its Creative Director McKenna Olsen tell us what it takes to prepare for a high-scale event, furniture trends to be on the lookout for, and putting love into the pieces.

LUXIERE 13

THE ARTISAN

Tell me a bit about the furniture being created for the Scissortail Park greenroom. Kat: Of the eighteen total pieces for the greenroom, we have personally created six. Our custom pieces include an 84-inch farm table, two end tables, a coffee table, a bookshelf, and an entryway shelf. As far as seating, we didn’t want just farm tables or dining room tables, so we incorporated a velvet emerald-green chesterfield sofa into the greenroom, which added a bit of funk to the traditional farmhouse aesthetic.

How would you describe the style of the custom-built greenroom pieces? McKenna: Scissortail Park is up-andcoming and is a rebirth to a part of town that hasn’t seen a lot of love in a while. When I was brainstorming design ideas, I was thinking about raw metal industrial designs, but also functionality. There will be a lot people in entertainment and people of influence in the greenroom, so we wanted to create something that would make them feel in awe of what’s in front of them.

Tell me a bit about the creative process behind coming up with furniture designs. McKenna: Furniture design is a lot like fashion - as time goes on, design trends and aesthetics change. While Urban Farmhouse’s style is still relevant, there’s been a twist to our designs - a little more industrial with a mid-century modern vibe. When I’m creating new products and new designs, I have to take trends into consideration. And of course, one thing we are very focused on and what drew me to Urban Farmhouse is that we really take pride in using sustainable resources. I feel that when sustainability and design come hand in hand, beautiful things are created. One thing I try to do during the design process: I try to think what product we’re using, what materials we’re sourcing, how they come about, and then also what the offset will be. So I go for sustainability, functionality, and then I go to aesthetic. Aesthetic is the number one factor, but it has to function properly before it can be anything. 14 LUXIERE

THE ARTISAN

Where do the furniture ideas come from? McKenna: When I get overwhelmed, I immerse myself in nature and somehow, I always feel that inspiration right where I am. One of our table vases I designed is called the spider vase and it’s inspired by the looks of a spider. But when I was thinking about that design, I knew I wanted a more modern interpretation while incorporating the element of nature and spider lines into the piece. I try to keep the undertone of earth in everything I do.

Some furniture trends to be on the lookout for? McKenna: Whether you’re looking at our store or looking at clothing and style, midcentury modern is without a doubt making a huge comeback. There’s also a lot of gold and matte-colored metals coming out right now. People are driving away from the antique and farmhouse aesthetic, but they still love that raw look.

LUXIERE 15

THE ARTISAN

What is the secret behind creating good furniture? McKenna: Have a passion for what you’re doing. I think everybody has the potential to be a creator in whatever realm they want, but you have to really enjoy the creative process and everything that comes along with it. If you’re not passionate about the work, you can see it in your craft. You can tell when a piece has been made with love.

“The world can only see us, as we see ourselves.” - LG

AS THE LAST OF THE WARM DAYS PASS US BY, the need to cozy up and get earthy seems natural, and our body is ready to cleanse and release. It is the perfect time to lean into some self-care with detoxifying in mind. Why many may think of juice cleansing and crisp salads, this season of detox is focused on deeply nourishing and releasing of things that no longer serve you - inflammation that may be stored up in your body from the hot summer, too many cold margs at the pool, and general adrenal fatigue. In Ayurvedic medicine this season is a time for body and diet cleansing. Kitchari is an easy to digest porridge eaten for all meals. It gives your digestive system a time to rest and release the toxins built up in our system. It also acts as a hard reset for those of us who have fallen off the whole foods lifestyle from time to time. As someone with gut sensitivities, I find five to seven days of kitchari to be nourishing and rebalancing in every way. During the reset, the practice of Abhyanga helps activate externally what is happening internally. 18 LUXIERE

In an Abhyanga herbal oil massage, a healer blends oils and herbs for your specific needs and uses massage and penetrating heat to release built-up toxins. Adding this practice to your routine will truly give you a full body detox from the inside out. In the honor of detoxing the body and rooting down for the cooler months, time journaling and letting go are key. There are so many tools to help guide a brain reboot practice. -speaking into voice memos with a 5 minute timer -guided journals with question prompts -morning pages -gratitude writing Find what works for you for the season that you are in, and say yes to these seasons of life change. What may have been emotionally releasing for you last year might just not cut it now. There are times we need a little guidance to keep from distraction and that is okay, as long as the things weighing on our head and heart get out.

BEAUT Y

Let’s start from the top: FULL BODY DETOX

Head: A purifying hair and scalp treatment relieves the dryness, exfoliates, and regenerates the skin. A rice wax is a natural, delicate, scrub that cleanses as well as stimulates the microcirculation in the scalp. Such deeply nourishing treatments generally happen in a spa setting, but there are great at home options as well. Try the G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub from Goop. Mouth: Oil pulling…we talk about digestion starting in the mouth a lot around here. Tongue scraping and oil pulling daily are fast and easy beginnings for full release and digestion. Gut: A morning jump start with warm lemon water is another routine that has stood the test of time, and this past year I put this into practice. Let me tell you, a few things happened: one, my need to start pounding the morning coffee subsided, and two, my insides were gently warmed up for the day, making digestion smooth and easy. It was like a deep breath for your insides. Body: Full skin masking with Spirulite Active Charbon pulls impurities, excess sebum, and toxins from the surface of the skin. It is a great option for the shower lovers out there. Body detoxing is enhanced by dry brushing practices when the lymphatic system allows. Home: Creating seasonal home energy cleansing rituals is crucial to maintaining balance. Taking time to verbally and physically move the air creates calm, peace, gratitude, energy, and contentment. Small acts such as speaking affirmations into the entrances of your space, to aligning your furniture in the art of feng shui, to lighting incense copal, sage, or pal santos to energies can restore your home’s atmosphere. Home release and reset will help create a sanctuary in these eventful seasons upon us. Our space is a respite, no matter how big or small. Heart: While I wish there was an easily made potion for emotional detoxing, there isn’t. But along with cleansing our body and home, we can’t ignore the balance of our heart and soul. The tools of writing, therapy, reading, meditating and moving all help keep the flow going. During this time of detox, bring intentionality into truly letting go the thoughts that no longer serve you. Unnecessary dialogues that are on loop - write them down, burn them, flush them, let them go. Our book this issue is fitting: Letting Go: the Pathway to Surrender. Learning to read the internal cues we can trust, we can release needless mental chatter.

Lean into this nourishing season with your whole heart, and body, and mind!

STORY BY MICHAEL KINNEY

URBAN MEETS THE OUTDOORS AT THE

WOODSMAN TRADING COMPANY The Woodsman Trading Company is a gift and apparel shop in Oklahoma City unlike any other retail store in the state. Its drawing card is stocking items not just from Oklahoma, but from across the globe. Candles made in Broken Arrow are situated just across the aisle from sweaters from Ireland. Cologne from Tennessee is just steps away Ecuadorian blankets. This smorgasbord of unique wares is the brainchild of Gaylon Cornsilk. Since opening the shop in late 2017, his goal has been to introduce residents of Oklahoma to international and local brands they are not familiar with. “I feel like sometimes I bring in brands that are popular, say, in states like Colorado or Utah or California, but maybe they haven't quite hit Oklahoma yet,” Cornsilk said. “I love to pioneer brands, though, that are new to this area. That's very important; that is the thrust of what we do. I work with some big-name brands, but I also work with a lot of smaller companies.” The 42-year old Cornsilk opened The Woodsman after trying his hand at a number of different occupations. But none of them held his attention or passion like the idea of working for himself. “I've worked for other people. But I think over the years what my passion's always been and my ultimate dream and goal is to work for myself, so I could build something not just for myself, but for my wife and my children,” said Cornsilk, who is married with two teenage daughters. “So, not only for myself but I want to do whatever I can to build a future for my girls, for my children.” This desire forced him to make the decision to leave his previous retail job and open up his own business — one that I could be passionate about. 32 LUXIERE

Located in The Village, The Woodsman Trading Company (9705 N May Ave, Suite 120) has gone out of its way to stand out from other retail shops in the state. The phrase that sums up the store’s concept is ‘Urban meets Outdoors.’ “Now, I didn't come up with that, but I feel like that's who we are, urban meets the outdoors,” Cornsilk said. “We’ve got articles of clothing that are geared towards the outdoors, very strongly. But then we've got nice dress shirts, things that could work every day. I mean, you're working downtown, you're going to midtown, Bricktown, and the shirt looks great. You could look great hiking in it, but you could look great on a night on the town. So, urban meets outdoors, that's who we are.”

woodsmantrading.com

But it’s not just clothes that fill up the store. The Woodsman also has candles, custom knives, pens, cooking utensils, backpacks, hats, cologne and much more that all embody the urban outdoorsman. “I've always had a knack for finding brands and finding things; I just have a knack for it,” Cornsilk said. “I feel like it's a gift from above. I've always been able to find things. So, finding the brands, for me, at least, has not been challenging.”

However, Cornsilk's initial concept of the Woodsman was completely different than what he created. “I had this idea of maybe a little bit more hardcore wilderness gear and technical gear and the kind of wilderness survival gear that I love,” Cornsilk said. “But then, I was at a particular trade show, and I was seeing the clothing and other things and this light bulb literally just went off in my head and I said, 'This is the direction I really need to be going.' I changed directions in a moment and started pursuing the Urban meets Outdoors concept. I wanted the store to be family-oriented and more of an outdoor lifestyle store.”

IMPROVE YOUR gut health BY TESTING FOR FOOD SENSITIVITIES

To test for delayed food sensitivities, we use panels that involve a blood draw and can test for up to 200 different foods, food additives and colors. Once offending foods have been identified, steps are taken to heal the gastrointestinal tract using special probiotics and supplements. Our patients have been astonished which foods are actually triggers and how avoiding these foods results in resolution of their symptoms. Symptoms that may indicate you have a food sensitivity include: • • • • •

Joint pain/swelling Migraines Eczema psoriasis Autoimmune disease Fibromyalgia

• • •

Arthritis Inability to lose weight Irritable bowel disease and other colon diseases

and immune system in a deficient state, which can create a cascade of deficiencies that may be corrected by returning the gut to a healthy state. So what does gut health mean to the average person struggling to keep up? Gut health means digging deep into your health and asking yourself about nagging and recurring symptoms. Do you have bloating, fatigue, chronic nasal drip, swelling of the hands, sudden weight gain, constipation, insomnia, or an autoimmune disorder? While these may seem relatively unimportant, and you get a little better with medication, you may need to be functionally evaluated. Testing and treatment with a combination of functional and conventional medicine can help. The good news is that medical testing technology is now available and simple. As a curious consumer, I always like to know what testing I really need and what treatments are indicated by the test results. Dr. Miles is very insistent that patients understand the meaning of the tests and the options for treatment. Using evidence-based testing and supporting the patient with guided access to medical information and testing are important components of her practice. She uses specific tests along with her medical training to help narrow down symptoms and actually treat the cause and not just the symptom. Tests offered most commonly are the ALCAT test, which she has used for 12 years, which tests food intolerances that could be irritating the gut, delaying healing and reaching optimal health; SIBO testing for intestinal bacterial overgrowth; and stool analysis using DNA sequence testing to provide direct information about the state of the gut microbiome. Such tests can provide important information about our lives and reveal how our body is recovering from our daily traumas. If you’re looking for answers to your health, and you need some guidance on how to deconstruct your life and rebuild your gut health, know that Vitruvia MD has an arsenal of tools to help you achieve optimal health.

Australia is huge, about as big as the 48 contiguous states, yet it has a smaller population than Texas. Most of the population lives on the coast; there’s not much going on the deeper you go inland. The coasts, though, are spectacular, in their beautiful urbanity and their serene beaches.

LUXIERE 49

his was my first trip to Australia, but it won’t be my last. My 17-day, journey to the land down-under went by in a blur; it felt more like a long weekend, gone much too fast. So much to see and do. I went with a spirit of adventure, and in that vein, I didn’t really have a big game plan. My thought was that I would let the fates dictate and just experience whatever came my way. I had jotted down a short list of places to see and things to do, but since I’m an architectural photographer by trade, my primary objective was to just get away and photograph whatever seemed interesting or beautiful to me. It’s so fascinating to see the different structural and ornamental architectural styles and ideas people put into the structures they build. When I wasn’t admiring and photographing the wildly diverse architecture, I found myself exploring the beaches and enjoying the excellent coffee shops. Australians are friendly and eco-conscious, and I marveled at how completely and easily they’ve incorporated living ‘ green’ into their daily lives.

T R AV E L

Australia is a lot like the United States in a lot of ways. There are close relations at all levels of government between the two. Australia and the United States work closely with like-minded partners in regional and global forums, including the G20, East Asia Summit, World Trade Organization and United Nations. One difference: Based on my limited assessment, I feel like Australia as a whole is taking BIG strides in being a very eco-friendly place and I like it. Big thumbs up to our friends down under.

OKLAHOMA HUMANE SOCIETY’S YULE LOG: Ring in the holidays with puppies, kittens and your favorite local musicians. STORY BY RACHEL DEWBERRY P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y R YA N M A G N A N I

The Oklahoma Humane Society is serving up an adorable way to get you in the holiday spirit. On November 29th, you can visit okhumaneyulelog.com to view and download a Yule Log video featuring rescue dogs and cats frolicking in front of a festive fireplace scene. The OK Humane Yule Log video will be set to holiday tunes from favorite local musicians such as Husbands, Sophia Massad and Cavern Company. This visual album can be downloaded with any donation to the Oklahoma Humane Society, beginning November 29th. “We’re so excited to launch the OK Humane Yule Log this year. The video is a perfect thing to play in the background of your Christmas parties, while you’re wrapping presents, or enjoying a holiday dinner. All the dogs and cats featured in the OK Humane Yule Log will be in their forever homes this Christmas, and that’s really what OK Humane is all about. During this season of giving, we wanted to keep our community’s animal population in the forefront of people’s minds” said Rachel Dewberry, OK Humane’s Special Events Manager.

The Oklahoma Humane Society is Oklahoma’s largest animal rescue and is entirely donor-funded and fosterbased. OK Humane’s mission is to end the needless euthanasia of dogs and cats in the state of Oklahoma. OK Humane has a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, a neonate clinic, and a relocation program, among several other initiatives to help increase the state’s live-release rate of animals from local shelters. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA BABB

N

Just off North Kelley Avenue sits the Sundial Mansion, a historic gem of Oklahoma City. The villastyle estate transports its visitors to a foreign land in a distant time with its distinct turn-of-thecentury Spanish flair. After the home weathered years of neglect, Oklahoma realtor Keena Oden is breathing life into it once more.

In the late 1890s, America was a place of dreams and luster for immigrants from around the world. A Greek businessman named John Sinopoulo caught wind of that dream and left his Greek homeland in 1893 to pursue ventures in the American entertainment industry. After doing business across the country, he eventually made his way to middle-America, opening the Delmar Gardens in Oklahoma City – the state’s premiere amusement park at the time. Sinopoulo and his wife took a liking to the state and decided to build a home in the heart of it.

Construction of the Mediterranean style “Sundial Mansion” began in 1915 with the design help of John Eberson, known for his work with atmospheric theatres across the world. His theatrical touches are found throughout the home, especially in the main living room with what resemble sound resonators of the 1920’s on the grand white walls with a soaring two-story stained glass arch sitting between them. The house has 14 rooms across four floors covering over 7,100 square feet, in addition to a detached garage with an apartment above. The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, marking its significance in Oklahoma history.

The Sundial is a treasure, it is so important to preserve what we have. ~ Keena Oden

Keena Oden, its current owner and keeper, was no stranger to daunting renovations before she purchased the home. Having restored historical homes in the past, Oden always eyed the Sundial when she passed it on her daily commute. She said to herself, “If this house ever goes on the market, I’m going to buy it. Then one day, she saw it listed online, and within a week she had a contract.

With years of neglect and disrepair, the home was no easy undertaking. The first thing she tackled was the mauve carpet that covered the entirety of the home. Beneath the seventies style shag was gorgeous hardwood floor and intricate tiling. From the beginning, Oden’s goal has been to preserve and restore as many original features as possible, though her overall plans for the property are still developing. She asks herself: “What is the Sundial? A venue? A museum? A home?” The thought of selling it has crossed her mind, but only to a buyer with the home’s best interest in mind. “When you live here I think you need to be a steward of the property. A perfect buyer would be someone who is focused on preserving and restoring it. If someone came along and was that perfect buyer, I would consider it,” Oden said “though it would be hard to let it go.” Oden hopes to one day see the property restored to its original beauty inside and out, with intact interior features and lush gardens surrounding. Oden believes it is of utmost importance to preserve homes like the Sundial due to Oklahoma’s limited history, especially after the razing of many historical buildings during Oklahoma City’s urban renewal. “Oklahoma didn’t even become a state until 1907. We have very little history in comparison to other big cities like Denver, Cleveland and elsewhere. The Sundial is a treasure,” Oden said. “It is so important to preserve what we have.”
