ESG/sustainable investing considerations: Sustainable investing strategies aim to consider and in some instances integrate the analysis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process and portfolio. Strategies across geographies and styles approach ESG analysis and incorporate the findings in a variety of ways. Incorporating ESG factors or sustainable investing considerations may inhibit the portfolio manager’s ability to participate in certain investment opportunities that otherwise would be consistent with its investment objective and other principal investment strategies. The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of ESG or sustainable investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio where such factors are not considered by the portfolio manager. Because sustainability criteria can exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. LIFE FROM HOME: A NEW NORMAL
DESIGN SPEAKS W I T H T R AV I S M O R E LO C K , CO - O W N E R WILSHIRE CABINET + CO
S
ince the beginning of this year, we have all experienced a huge transformation of the “normal” we once took for granted. Our daily rituals of going to the office, sending the kids off to school, sneaking into the gym for a moment of “me time”, dining out with friends, or making a quick run to the grocery store suddenly ceased to exist. In the blink of an eye, our normal just changed. Our homes began morphing into multi-purpose event centers where many activities need to happen simultaneously, and oftentimes, in the same spaces. Few of us had ever heard of Zoom and now we all wish we had invested in it! Watching the world cope with the challenges that have risen from adopting an instant, uninvited, and unrehearsed lifestyle has been an incredible learning process. Operating a business in an essential part of the home building/renovating industry has given our team and myself great insight into how we can provide real, sustainable solutions for a “new normal” life in your home. I personally believe that many things will go back to the way that they were, but I do not believe that we will easily forget this experience. I think moving forward we will spend a bit more time in the comfort and safety of our homes. I believe a functional home-office will never again be
a frill and, instead, become a requirement. People will take more pride in their homes, and if the space around them doesn’t bring about good feelings, then they will move on to some place that does. Here’s what we now know to be true: the kitchen remains the heart of the home (and is now the hub of the home, too); everyone needs more storage space; and many rooms must serve double duty. As we emerge into our “new normal”, we are reading and hearing about a new “Life From Home” concept. The idea is centered around a growing sense that our homes are now our safe havens – the place where we gather, nurture our relationships, sustain ourselves, learn in, work from, and invest in. I don’t see this movement in the same light as the doomsday preppers, but I do see the benefits of creating spaces in our homes that allow us to be more prepared, flexible, comfortable, and happy. Let’s take a look at some of the challenges this new concept can address. >

THE NEW HOME RESTAURANT First, let me make one thing clear: I still love going out to restaurants. I enjoy celebrating at some of the finest spots in town, whether it’s a special event or a random Tuesday. Piatto Italian off May and NW63rd is a new favorite, B10 is my classic steak go-to, and if you have not tried a famous crab cake or seafood risotto from Rococo, then you have not lived in OKC. All of that to say that eating at home has gone from the occasional to most of the time. If you have not had the chance to design a custom kitchen with a qualified kitchen designer, then do yourself a favor and make an investment in this all-important room. A great kitchen has zones that coordinate the storage of certain tasks with the areas in which they happen; think a baking zone or a veggie prep station. There are so many storage and organization ideas that can be incorporated into your new space that will make your work efficient and enjoyable.

HOME OFFICE & SCHOOL In today’s world some type of home office is not a foreign concept. But officing from home in the same place, and at the same time school is in session, is. Adding cabinetry to an unused or underutilized room in your home can bring calm to the chaos while providing neat and organized storage options. Think of adding mail slots so that everyone in the family can have a place for their incoming mail, task and chore assignments, or even encouraging notes. Think of how these spaces function for you and how they might work better. Hidden printer and filing cabinets integrated into your cabinetry give the room a clean calm. Hidden wireless charging hubs, installed below your countertop, allow you to stay connected and also charge as you work. Think of pocket doors designed to properly separate and organize different zones for each person in the house. All of these things and more are possible once you have identified the space you are looking to use…and have enlisted the help of creative professionals.
OUTDOOR Whether your home is a sprawling estate or a quaint bungalow, expanding out into the great outdoors is the best way to keep you from feeling confined or cramped. With warm weather arriving in Oklahoma, you’ll be able to enjoy some sun and relaxation outdoors. Winding down on the back patio, or cooking outside for weeknight or weekends dinners, is now more important than ever before. Today’s outdoor kitchens are much more than a stainless insert in a brick or stone wall. The custom, all-weather cabinetry from Wilshire Cabinet + Co allows you to create a truly functional kitchen outdoors – from built-in trash bins to grill tool organizers and plenty of clean, dry cabinet space for all your outdoor plates and glasses. Enjoying the outdoors in style should be a part of your new normal.
We will survive this new normal and thrive in it, through great design and by surrounding ourselves with the best of what makes us comfortable. Whether you’re investing in a new home build, updating just a room, or planning a whole home remodel, contact your favorite Oklahoma design and construction professionals. And, as always, the talented team at Wilshire Cabinet + Co is here to help. CHEERS! Travis Morelock Co-Owner, Wilshire Cabinet + Co

s the world continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of the population has focused on the physical and economic effects. However, as more is learned, it's become evident that the virus has affected the mental and emotional state of millions across the globe. Jennifer Winton has been intensely concerned about those two areas. Winton, an Oklahoma native, is the owner and CEO of UShine, a nonprofit that focuses on the mental and emotional health of everyone that needs it. “We are a mental health resource for the mainstream,” Winton said. “We provide free mental health educational resources for everybody. We do believe everybody should make mental health a priority. We provide curriculum, small and large group material, that anybody can use who wants to get together and learn more about how various aspects of our life impact our mental health.” Winton and her start-up team formed UShine in 2015 after years of dealing with issues of her own mental health. During that time, she wasn’t able to find the resources she needed. That led her to create a place that did. “Like most of these things, they come out of a personal story. That’s true for me. I have struggled personally with anxiety and depression since childhood. UShine was born out of a frustration with my own experience of feeling like what was available for me to understand mental health in a holistic way was lacking. It was really difficult to dig in and find the resources for all those things. This isn’t a one size fits all journey.” Winton said out of that frustration, she wanted to bring together the means into one package that people can study all at once. That is where
22 LUXI E R E
UShine was born. The original plan had Winton and her team putting together specific packages for different groups that would address specific issues the members of a group were trying to deal with. “We want people to come together and discuss,” Winton said. “We are trying to help bridge that gap between those who struggle and those who don’t.” UShine chapters were created at Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma Christian Academy and Lipscomb University (TN). A team in Vienna, Austria also had formed a chapter. Yet, Winton still didn’t feel UShine was reaching its potential. “I started realizing this material is great for college students and high school students and for schools to kind of snatch up and use within their systems. But we kept having people see our posts and saying ‘tell me more about this curriculum. How can I get that? I want to get that with my friends.’ We started really seeing that people do want this. But as a school might be able to afford to purchase this material to use across a campus, we need to just get this out there free.” Near the start of 2020, UShine held a fundraiser which allowed Winton to put all of the material on her website, ushine.org. It is now available for any individual or group to access and use. “That’s been my goal all along,” Winton said. “It’s just when you are running a non-profit, funds are limited and it takes time to figure that out. But that was the goal from day one, to make it free. It just became a reality this year.” Winton offers two educational programs labeled Healthy Habits and UShine Conversations. They are broken down into sessions and allow groups of any size to utilize.

GET DIRT ON YOUR HANDS, drink water, eat plants, see the beauty of it all and know that you are nature, too. STORY BY CHELSEY ANN P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y B R I T TA N Y P H I L L I P S

hat a great thought to ponder! We are nature. We are connected to the earth in a magical, mysterious way. I don’t know about you, but this season of hibernation in our homes and marching in the streets has brought me face to face with some fears that take me right back to the earth. The ground. That truly grounding energy that pulls us to the garden and outside for an evening walk, nature reminds us that we are tiny and that this earth might just know what we need more than we do. These are intense times. Sacred times. Universally shattering times. How does one begin to write about self-care in this current climate? Is it important? Does it matter? Well my friends, yes it does! I fell head first into a pile of research, discovering the nervous system and the toll that trauma, new and ancestral, takes on the body. It became very clear that caring for your body, emotionally and physically, is of most importance during these times. Whether you are serving others on the front lines, caring for loved ones, mothering and teaching and cooking for the family, marching on the streets, writing congress, saving your business, or reimagining your whole life, this vessel of a body needs a moment of your time. I have written about morning pages before, but I will mention it again. In the Artist’s Way, Ann Cameron encourages us to pull out three pieces of paper first thing in the morning and free write/brain dump. These pages are for no one to read. You can keep them or burn them; you just have to keep writing till the mess in your heads is out (It always turns into more than three pages for me).

Our Minds Affirmations: Literally put the darn sticky notes on your car and closet walls - maybe even the front door. With all the visual fear and chaos we are consuming, seeing and hearing encouraging words reminds our bodies to let down that flight or fight mode and breathe deeply. Educate yourself from sources you trust. Limit scrolling time and social media as information sources. Find a therapist, counselor, doula, or mentor to help guide you through these new waters. Thankfully, with our available technology we can find helpers and healers that align more closely with our beliefs than we ever could before. No longer are we bound by our zip code to find the community we need.
Our Bodies Energy moves. Stagnant energy and thoughts build up free radicals in the cells and wreak havoc on your nervous system. So take that walk, run, bike or swim. Loop around the neighborhood. If you are a listening kind, the Calm app has some wonderful guided talks that help bring peace and stillness to an anxious mind. Podcasts are a great tool to seek knowledge on the current times and issues at hand. SLEEP – IT’S RECOVERY IN EVERY WAY I find it is so easy to jump into fueling your body with fresh crisp greens, seasonal fruits, and veggies in the summer. The warm air just begs for water-dense foods. Bring on the smoothie for lunch and pair it with ice water. VITAMIN D While we are not recommending sun worship, a few moments in the sun with a protective hat and safe SPF will do wonders for the mood and the body. Try the early morning to start the day off with a natural lift. STRESS AND YOUR SKIN Stress and free radical damage in the body it appears on the skin as wrinkles, discoloration (aka dark spots) and dullness. Antioxidants are the antidote — vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A/retinol, vitamin B3, coffee berry, grape seed, green tea. You can find most of these ingredients in skincare products, but just be mindful of percentages and quality. Do your research. Many of these powerhouse vitamins can cause more damage than good if we are not using sunscreen and protecting our skin as it is healing. Foods rich in antioxidants are blueberries, kale, spinach, strawberries, artichokes, and (yay!) dark chocolate. Healing from the inside out is preventative as well. I will leave you with this thought from Lauren Trend @self.practice:

aserati has always found a way to stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s been with its sleek and elegant look or high-powered performance, the Italian brand is known for creating its own path. This has been the Maserati way since its inception a century ago. “It’s a very historic Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer founded over a hundred years ago by the four Maserati brothers,” said Karl DeBoer, Brand Manager at Maserati North America, as we check out the cars on display. “The Maserati brothers got into racing and then ultimately production vehicles, and it’s because of that heritage that we’re here today with these gorgeous Italian-crafted vehicles. We’re very proud of that Italian heritage.” Because of the rich European craftsmanship, whenever the car company introduces anything new to the Maserati family, it tends to be bold and aggressive. That’s the case with the Limited Series Edizione Ribelle and the GT Sports Package, which were both on
display at the Washington Auto Show. “We really want to communicate all of the new value that we’re adding for consumers along with this limited-production series: the Edizione Ribelle and our brand-new GT Sport Package,” DeBoer said. “Providing value to the customers, more standard features and content - that’s really what we’re trying to communicate for the new model year.” The Ribelle line will include the Ghibli S Q4, Levante S and the Quattroporte S Q4 in the GranSport trim. “The name ‘Ribelle’ means rebel in Italian and pays homage to the rebel nature of Maserati as the choice for consumers who want to stand out from the crowd and not blend into the sea of sameness,” according to Al Gardner, CEO of Maserati North America. “These distinctive vehicles showcase the high level of Italian design and craftsmanship that Maserati is known for.” The limited series Ribelle hit North American showrooms in March. “We’re only producing 225 of these vehicles,” DeBoer said. “One hundred Ghiblis, 100 Levantes, and 25 Quattroportes, and that’s for all of North America. We are so excited to launch this very exclusive vehicle.” The Ribelle package’s sleek black trim is highlighted on the window surrounds, exhaust tips, vertical grille bars and the 20-inch dark wheels with contrasting red brake calipers. The Ribelle is just as intense inside, with premium leather seats in contrasting twotone black and red stitching. Also, the steering wheel and front and rear seats are heated. Maserati’s all-new GT Sport Package will be available in the Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte models. The package includes aggressive front and rear GranSport fascia, unique wheels and a selection of red, blue or black painted brake calipers. “We added more standard features and content to the 2020 model year vehicles,” says DeBoer. “For example, on our GranSport trims, our GTS trim, and then also on all Quattroporte models, we added our level two autonomy driver’s assistance package, and this comes with highway assist, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning—a whole suite of features.”

BEATRIZ MAYORCA’S CREATIONS S TO R Y BY VA L E N T I N A G U T I E R R E Z
B
eatriz Mayorca understands what it is to have many layers that, in the end, combine to form an identity unique to each individual. Beatriz is an artist, immigrant, mother, wife, and above all, a persevering woman with an unparalleled passion for art. Beatriz’s story begins in Venezuela, a vibrant country bathed in the waters of the Caribbean — a country that now suffers a complicated political and social situation. In its former glory, Venezuela became rich in immigrants who came to the country after the Second World War, many with empty hands and hearts full of hopes for a new beginning. The European immigrants shaped the arts and architecture of the country. A prime example is La Universidad Central de Venezuela, the university from which Beatriz graduated. Famous for its modernist architecture, it is full of art by world-renowned artists such as Alexander Calder, Jesus Soto, Oswaldo Vigas, and Victor Vasarely. Beatriz started her career in Engineering and later changed to Mass Communication. Without her knowing it, the university’s visual influence and its studies in engineering and communication would form an essential part of the career that she would later start. In 2005 the company for which Juan Carlos Brito, Beatriz’s husband, worked decided to transfer him and his family to Oklahoma, which initiated a new identity: “Immigrant,” a word that Beatriz carries with pride. Many do not know it, but this word is good friends with another: “Opportunity”. “In a country as complex as Venezuela, where Maslow’s pyramid dominates social existence, little time and resources are dedicated to art.” Mayorca says, “Many of us do not allow ourselves to explore our creativity that could perhaps develop into a great passion or career because other basic needs are not covered. There is no space for gambling.” Once in Oklahoma, Beatriz decided to allow herself to explore something different that had intrigued her her whole life: art. “I graduated in 2011 from University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree
in Fine Arts. During this time, I explored different art media, but where I found my passion was using power tools, mixing elements such as concrete, metals, woods, mosaics, and other elements.” When I asked her what she believes her success is attributed to, she said without hesitation: “Perseverance - I have learned to see the “NO’s” as part of the process. It was challenging at first. Once I earned my degree, I dedicated myself to learning about the economic part of art, how to present proposals to a committee and how to calculate budgets and overhead for the art pieces to be fairly priced and profitable. I wanted to do things well from the beginning from all points of view, including legally”. Beatriz’s art perfectly encapsulates her different career paths, her roots, and her dreams. Without realizing it at the time, everything she was learning would manifest in the creation of something bigger. Her background in engineering now plays a crucial role in the production of significant works of public art. Her materials combine EuropeanVenezuelan architectural influences such as metal and concrete with the use of natural elements such as wood and ropes commonly used in South American culture. Her background in communication and her deep understanding of human interactions have allowed Beatriz to create marvelous art pieces. She is driven by an enormous desire to bring something positive to Oklahoma and its public art. “I intend to bring art to all audiences, to give the people of this city, who have given me so much, a pleasant moment… a smile. Art is something magical; it brings people together. No matter how different we are, art is something that we can all enjoy and it should be there to unite.” Beatriz’s essence is filled with gratitude to this country and to this city. “I am very grateful to be part of this city. I have been here for 15 years, and I am pleased I have been able to see and be part of the growth of Oklahoma City. I would not want to be anywhere else.”

2020 PROJECT HOUSE
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
STORY BY KIANA MORIDI PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL SHINGLETON
T
hey say home is where the heart is—or where you’ve been cooped up for the past few months/eternities during the thick of a pandemic. Now more than ever, people are looking to purchase in-state homes that are far away enough to feel like a getaway, and the new 2,225 square foot four-bedroom home in Carlton Landing at Lake Eufaula is perfect for that. In late 2019, builders Lindsey & JJ Morris of Scissortail Homes were approached by Cottages & Bungalows Magazine along with its sister publication, American Farmhouse Style, to be their featured builder in 2020. For the past few years, both publications documented the process of building what they’ve termed “Project Home” — a showcase, custom home from concept to completion. For the eye candy and interior design of the home, Rachel Shingleton implemented soft color palettes and touches of light, airy tones—think calming hues sprinkled with pops of color. To learn more about the design process, we chatted with Shingleton about layers, colors, and the recipe to a memorable design.

What is your background in interior design? My official background is in graphic design, but interiors have always been my first love (I drew floorplans for fun when I was a kid!). In 2008 I started my design blog, Pencil Shavings on a whim as a way to connect with other creatives and potentially attract new graphic design clients. I was able to grow it into an online shop where I designed and sold custom products like phone cases, paper goods, home decor and accessories. I was also blogging a lot about projects we were doing around our house at the time, and the blogs resonated with the readers. Blogging opened a lot of doors for me, and I connected with the editors at Better Homes & Gardens at a conference and was invited to write online for them about interiors. Over time, it felt like interiors became the focus for me creatively, and I took the leap to start taking on clients. Tell me about the surge of buying activity of secondary/vacation homes in the area as a result of the pandemic. There was a rush of buyers in Carlton Landing over the past few months; people are realizing that they’re probably not going to be traveling as extensively for the foreseeable future and a getaway that’s close to home is really appealing.

Any special features of the house? Scissortail is great at building houses with interesting, unexpected touches and we wanted this house to reflect that. But I think the custom kitchen cabinets we designed together are my favorite element of the home. The lattice detail featured in the kitchen is carried throughout the home, from the master suite all the way up to the bunk room upstairs. The bunk room is probably my second favorite room because it’s such a happy space and perfect for sleepovers. We kept the palette light overall and allowed the suite bathroom to steal the show a bit with some really fun tile. What was the inspiration behind the design of this house? We needed the design to appeal to the Cottages & Bungalows/ American Farmhouse reader, so it was important that it be a blend of modern and traditional with a twist. Lindsey and I collaborated on the overall color scheme and general vibe that we wanted the house to convey. We wanted to get beyond the basic black and white color scheme you often see in this style and curate something new that you don’t see everywhere. It was about creating a cohesive color palette with an elevated take on farmhouse style.

“PEOPLE ARE DEFINITELY IN THE MOOD TO REDECORATE; WE’RE SPENDING MORE TIME AT HOME THAN EVER, SO IT NEEDS TO FUNCTION WELL.” —RACHEL SHINGLETON
How would you describe the interior design of the house? Overall, it was about being functional, pretty, and relaxed but still intentional. I used performance fabrics for the sofas and the custom cushions on the banquette in the dining room. I wanted the home to have a natural, layered feel, and I was especially interested in creating a muted color palette that was unexpected but still pretty calming overall. In the tile selections, for example, we wanted something that has that handmade feel with imperfections and variations. If you could choose one room in the house to quarantine in, what would it be? Why? I really wrestled with this, but I think I’d choose the master bedroom. It’s so dramatic with the 12-foot ceilings and that amazing canopy bed. I’m pretty much in love with the bathroom too—I think it’d be the perfect place to ride out a quarantine. Any tips for people looking to redesign their home during quarantine? I think now is the time to get intentional about how we want to live. Home matters, and it needs to feel comforting and restful. We’re spending more time at home than ever, so it also needs to function well. Personally, I’m decluttering like crazy and editing is everything! My favorite tip is one my husband uses for his real estate clients—use your iPhone to snap a few photos around your house and see what sticks out to you from those photos. Sometimes we tend to gloss over clutter or general visual busyness, especially if we’ve been in one space for a while, so you might be surprised by what you see. What makes a house feel like a home? Layers. Bring on all the pillows, blankets and comfy bed sheets! Make your home personal with artwork, accessories, and things you’ve collected from travel.
