ESG/sustainable investing considerations: Sustainable investing strategies aim to consider and in some instances integrate the analysis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process and portfolio. Strategies across geographies and styles approach ESG analysis and incorporate the findings in a variety of ways. Incorporating ESG factors or sustainable investing considerations may inhibit the portfolio manager’s ability to participate in certain investment opportunities that otherwise would be consistent with its investment objective and other principal investment strategies. The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of ESG or sustainable investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio where such factors are not considered by the portfolio manager. Because sustainability criteria can exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. well-designed home has layers. It’s a simple statement and one upon which most design and construction industry leaders agree. However, agreeing on what the layers are and how to use them is another story. It is my humble belief that successful design includes layers of color, shape, and texture. Few materials can offer you the same versatility and impact as metal when it comes to adding a layer of color, shape or texture. I could go on for days talking about the different ways that you can successfully incorporate metal into your projects. But

instead of just talking about them, I am going to share some resources (that are right at your fingertips) to help inspire you with ways to bring in those visual and tactile layers of design through the use of metal. New York is an amazing design mecca, and it is there that we find so many influences in the use of rare materials from around the globe. None are more inspirational than the designs and products from Ikonni. For 30 years, Ikonni’s founder, Iko Aviv, has been bringing unique materials from Western Europe to the United States and transforming them into stunning surfaces.

It wasn’t until early 2020 that these exquisite products became readily available to the Oklahoma market through a new distribution partnership with Wilshire Cabinet + Co in Oklahoma City. Make an appointment with Wilshire Cabinet + Co to explore the incredible breadth of accent panel and texture options available. Envision adding a unique wall treatment to highlight a focal wall, covering the front of an island or wet bar, or creating a one-of-a-kind square range hood. The possibilities are endless, but it is clear that there are hundreds of options to incorporate some of these chic materials into your home.

STOLL INDUSTRIES

In a relatively short amount of time, the metal fabricating artists behind basik have earned a stellar reputation in Oklahoma. This talented group of Oklahoma artists opened their doors using the mantra “We build cool stuff for discerning clients.” And that they do! The visuals showcased on their website prove that these guys can build anything— from completely custom steel doors, staircases and railings to commercial fixtures and furnishings. Lending a contemporary feel, adding something bold and beautiful into your space can be a simple statement starter or the glue that binds your traditional bones with a modern aesthetic. Kitchen range hoods are not an unexpected place for a metal element to live in your home. What is unexpected are all the new design options and attention to detail that today’s finest all-metal range hoods can exude. Family-owned Stoll Industries is now in their 3rd generation of qualityled craftsmanship and fine details that only a true large scale metal manufacturer can provide. The team at Wilshire Cabinet + Co can help you design your very own custom range hood, with every detail specific to you and your style. Made in Abbeville, South Carolina (with installation and service here in Oklahoma through Wilshire Cabinet + Co), these showpieces are an Oklahoma favorite for when your kitchen needs a start to its show!

Introducing an interesting metal element or multiple mixed metal elements into your home does not mean you have to remodel. In fact, one Oklahoma metal fabricator can inspire you with many options that require no major construction at all. Urban Ironcraft has been designing and fabricating fine iron products for over 15 years. They work in both the residential and commercial arenas, but their focus is beautiful table bases, wine displays, fireplace screens and vanity bases. They have an easy-to-navigate website that shows many of the creations that they have brought to life over the past years. Custom is not a scary word at Urban Ironcraft, either. If you can dream it, then they are happy to talk about it with you. As I often say, “Friends don’t let friends drink and design.” So put down that Quarantini and pick up the phone to contact one of Oklahoma’s talented design powerhouses to get started on adding a metal WOW factor to your next project! Virtual meetings and digital mock-ups have made taking the first step easier than ever. CHEERS! Travis Morelock Co-Owner, Wilshire Cabinet + Co

AN INTERVIEW WITH

CHIP CARTER President & CEO of Cristo Rey Oklahoma City Catholic High School

M

eet Chip Carter, President and CEO of Cristo Rey Oklahoma City Catholic High School. He has a strong commitment and mission to change the lives of his students. While Cristo Rey OKC is only in its third year in Oklahoma City, it is part of a much larger, proven network with a staggering 100% college acceptance rate for its graduates nationwide. Within the walls of Cristo Rey OKC, you can hear students making plans for college and dreaming of becoming community leaders, doctors, teachers, and more because of the opportunities they have been given at Cristo Rey. I can’t wait for you to learn more about a school that brings businesses and students together for a life-changing mission. Tell me about Cristo Rey OKC and how it is different than other private schools in our state. Cristo Rey Oklahoma City Catholic High School, or “Cristo Rey OKC,” is a private Catholic high school that focuses on providing college preparatory academics with professional work experience. It is exclusively for families of limited resources. Most of our students will be the first college graduate in their family. We are distinguished by our unique Corporate Work Study Program, which partners students with local corporate employers one day per week and pays a majority of their education costs. Students learn professional skills and graduate with the confidence to succeed not only in college but also in the real world. Cristo Rey OKC is now in our third year with 250 freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Next year we expect to add another 110 students when we have all four grades. Minorities make up 85% of our students and 64% report English being a second language in the home. We are a member of a national Cristo Rey Network that has 37 schools in the country. This proven education model boasts a 100% college acceptance rate for its graduates network wide. We love to say that Cristo Rey is “Oklahoma City’s Future at Work!”

What do you love most about what you do? The students! We know without a doubt that what we are doing is changing lives. Our students want to learn and be the first in their family to go to college. They want the opportunity to have a life that their parents and grandparents haven’t been able to have. Only about 10% of our students have a college-educated adult in their home and most of our students have never been to a professional office environment until they come to Cristo Rey. When they go to and graduate from college (and they will!), we have not only changed that individual’s life, but we are affecting that whole family and its next generation. And when you are able to help change hundreds of families, you are changing a community. Who wouldn’t wake up every day excited about being a part of that? How has COVID 19 impacted your organization and what have you learned during the pandemic? Like every school in our community,

BUSINESS

Cristo Rey OKC has been hit hard by this virus. Because our Corporate Work Study Program is at the center of our financial and educational model, our school and mission are at risk. Our students work five days a month at our Corporate Work Study Partners, which covers the majority of their tuition and gives them valuable skills and confidence. With businesses closing, cutting back on their workforce, and taking extra care to limit their risk of exposure, our ability to secure partnerships for our students has drastically declined. We are hopeful that as more businesses become aware of our mission, we will continue to secure new Corporate Work Study Partners. How can the community support Cristo Rey OKC? There are three ways the community can support our school. Share our mission to help the community learn more about our school, make a donation, or consider becoming a Corporate Work Study Partner. We are actively seeking local businesses that are willing to join us and provide a professional work experience for our students. Some of our current Corporate Work Study Partners include Loves, BancFirst, Lopez Foods, MidFirst Bank, McBride Orthopedic Hospital, and Manhattan Construction, just to name a few. If your business is interested in learning more about our program, please call me at 405-945-9100. What is the best piece of advice you have received in your career? Strive daily. We should never stop learning or trying to improve. For me, one’s attitude is very important, and it should be based on striving for continuous improvement.

Who or what has shaped you in your life to become the person you are today? My faith and my parents. One of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received from my parents was being allowed to find faith for myself. Early in my adulthood I chose to become Roman Catholic. My faith and my relationship with Christ mean everything to me. My father never earned his college degree, a fact which most people who knew him will be shocked to learn, because he had to support his mother and younger siblings. Yet he was as intelligent and as professionally successful as anyone I have ever known. My mother has a Letters degree from OU and served on the Chickasha School Board for 10 years as well as the USAO Board of Regents for five years. My brother is also a life-long teacher and head of school, so education has always played a major role in my life. What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your career so far? Things rarely happen on our schedule or when we want, they happen in the Lord’s time. Be patient, work hard, always do the right thing, and understand that wherever you are, it’s exactly where you are supposed to be. Where do you hope to see Cristo Rey in 10 years? I hope to be able to stop someone in the community and ask if they have heard of Cristo Rey OKC, and their response to be, “Absolutely, we have a team of students in our company!” I also want to have an established reputation for sending not only all of our students to college every year but sending a good number of them to top tier schools. I want to be known for being as academically rigorous as any school in OKC. Lastly, we are looking for a new building for our school. We have been blessed to have a great relationship with OSU-OKC and are honored to be located on their campus, but we have outgrown our space. One of our main goals right now is to start a capital campaign and find a way to build or acquire a new permanent school home. What is one thing you enjoy doing when you are not at work? Spending as much time as possible with my family. My wife, Lori, is an attorney for the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office, and my two daughters, Cate and Lizzie, both attend Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. Our son, David, is a sophomore at the Colorado School of Mines, studying civil engineering. When my family is all in one room together, life is good. What is your favorite “luxiere”? I love traveling, particularly to the mountains. Crested Butte is one of my happy places. I also consider a nice dinner with friends or family to be another one of my favorite “luxieres.” There is nothing better than a nice, leisurely meal with a bottle of wine, good discussion, and lots of laughter! — KATI HANNA IS A PARTNER WITH THE METTISE GROUP and has been consulting with growing companies for more than two decades. SISTER BARBARA JOSEPH FOLEY

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE STORY BY CHRISTINE EDDINGTON P H OTO G R A P HY BY K E N N O N B RYC E

A

bout 50 miles south of Sacramento, the northern California city of Manteca is sunny and mild, perfect for tooling around town in a sporty convertible. Sister Barbara Joseph Foley, then just Barbara, a young career woman, loved zipping around town in her hard-top Toyota MR-2, often faster than she should have. She was living the quintessential early 1990s young professional lifestyle, the kind you might see in the movies or on a sitcom. She lived in a stylish condominium on a golf course, her career was on the right track, and she’d landed a position with the city’s purchasing department. She had a dog, a cat and an ever-growing collection of CDs. One day, as she was treating herself to a second television for her condo, she was struck with one thought: “What am I doing?” Even decades later, as she tells the story she sounds incredulous. “I didn’t need the second television. I didn’t need anything. It dawned on me that I was trying to find fulfillment with things,” she says. “I realized that things can’t be fulfilling.” The notion that she was trying to fill a void in her soul with more and more consumerism and that she should try something different was like a seed taking root in her heart. “Then God called me to do a very radical thing,” she says. Foley is a natural risk-taker, and she did something bold. She, by then in her early 40s, decided to jettison her condo, her career and too-material life, and enter a convent in Oklahoma. “I told my boss I was leaving and told him where I was going. He said, ‘Wow! Oklahoma,’ and kindly offered to hold my job for me for a year, but I said no, thank you.” Foley knew she wanted to give her new life her all, and having a fallback plan would defeat the purpose.

22 LUXI E R E

The year was 1997. Oklahoma City was very different than it is today. Downtown was barren and a little grim. Those first few years as a new Carmelite Sister, Foley was too busy to notice. “I was mostly confined to the convent, going to theology classes. My siblings came to visit in those early years and were like wow, what did you do?” Foley laughs at the memory. She has a joyful, easy laugh, which dances through her conversation. Eventually, Foley volunteered for a hands-on program called Hotdogs for the Homeless. As her acquaintance with Oklahoma City’s homeless population grew, so did her desire to serve them. She realized that their hunger wasn’t limited to a need for sustenance. They were also hungry for simple kindness, human compassion and dignity. The universe presented her with an offer she couldn’t refuse. “When I started volunteering for Hotdogs for the Homeless around 2001, it was new. Three of us would go out in a truck filled with hotdogs in lunch sacks. We went to the camps and got to know the guys. It touched my heart and I got a vision of having a place, someplace they could come and feel safe, chit-chat. Like a coffee house,” she says. A few years later, a space on NW 4th Street in downtown Oklahoma City became available, and she took the plunge. She fed the homeless sandwiches and gave them coffee and conversation. A weedy patch behind the building became a tranquil garden, a place for people to sit and feel sheltered. Word got out, and she added more volunteers, and more kindnesses: breakfast in a bag, clothing, hygiene kits. Since its inception, the pantry has remained nimble, expanding its services to address a variety of basic needs as they arise. Services include a foot clinic, a clothing room, a washer and dryer, a food

WO M A N O F I N F L U E N C E

bank, and an emergency vehicle that is used to visit the homeless in extremely hot or cold weather and to offer assistance to people on the streets who find themselves in dangerous situations. An eye clinic was poised to open when the pandemic blew into town, shuttering it a week before it was to open. Sister BJ’s Pantry is not a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. It is a place where, without the need to provide identification, patrons are met with a listening ear, open arms and an open heart as they visit a place of peace and rest. Dignity is an action word for Sister BJ, and for her, treating people with dignity and recognizing each person’s value and worth as an individual is crucial. “Dignity is respecting each person wherever they are. It’s so important. If you give a human being dignity, you help them to feel worthwhile as a person. It’s not an easy task all the time; in fact, it can be really hard.” Foley comes from a close-knit family with a strong Catholic faith. With lots of help from their grandparents, she and her five brothers and sisters were raised by their mother, who was widowed at 36. Foley’s work today draws its core tenets in part from Foley’s mother, who she says “always stood tall and always made me feel important. My mother always gently reminded us to treat one another with love and respect. If you are loved and you love yourself, you are then able to spread this to others.”

Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation They seem to pop up overnight, but dark spots can stem from longterm exposure and hormonal imbalances. Let me say this now—there are no quick fixes. For deeper results, we recommend visiting with a trusted cosmetic dermatologist for light treatments. Some pigmentation can be treated topically, seeing results in 6-8 weeks. Gentle and slow is the name of the game in skin brightening.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITES • GoopGlow Glycolic Overnight Glow Peel • Agent Nateur Holi(c) the C Duo Calcium & Vitamin C • Ayuna Cellular Oil Skin Revival Serum Note on topical treatments: be sure to use protection in the sun, as they can make the skin even more susceptible to future damage.

Redness Generally speaking, heat and sun exposure can leave your skin feeling puffy, inflamed, red, showing enlarged pores, and tight and dry. Fullspectrum CBD is a great ingredient to look for, and it has been popping up in the skincare world the past few years. It has high levels of vitamins A, C, and E, promoting collagen production and sebum balancing, and it is known for its ability to calm reactive, inflamed skin. Think of it as a big chill out for the skin’s nerve receptors.

Lip Color Changes It wouldn’t be fall without the beauty and versatility of a rich nude lip. Bring on rust, brown, nude and desert pink shades.

There is nothing more inspiring to me than a hard-working woman who doesn’t let anything stop her,” said Sally January, owner of local boutique Siempre Viva. “I’ve had a few indigenous women show me this example in such a graceful way—their attitude inspires me to use my gifts and privilege in the best way possible.” After living and studying abroad in Mexico, January fell in love with the culture and felt inclined to create positive change for women. Through graduate school and life experiences, she realized that the best way to create opportunity is through sustainable access to employment. “It was simple,” said January. “If I could perfect my retail skills state-side, I could empower more women—and then my passion for retail was born.” Now, January has two Siempre Viva locations (Norman and Beaver Creek, Colorado), both filled with colorful hues and purposeful, sustainable clothing. Here, we chat with January about providing work opportunities for women, the fight against fast fashion, and monochromatic fall trends.

What is your background in fashion and retail? What really began your love for fashion? My passion for retail grew out of my passion to give sustainable employment to artisans in Mexico. I spent many of my teenage years living in Mexico and falling in love with the culture. I was able to spend a lot of time in a few indigenous villages that had a profound impact on my life. I came back to the states with a yearning to help create change. When and where did you open the first Siempre Viva Shop? What led you to opening it? My very first store was opened in 2015 because I won free rent in a contest. I pitched my concept to a group of developers who believed in me, giving me my very first opportunity to show to myself that I could do it. My store was in Automobile Alley for two and a half years before relocating to Brookhaven Village in Norman this past February. I also opened a second location in my favorite place on earth, Beaver Creek, Colorado. What’s the story behind the store name? Siempre Viva means “always alive” when directly translated, or “succulent” in Spanish. For me, the name reminds me to always be present in the moment. Succulents are known to be hard to kill, with a strong will to live—that couldn’t be more me. What brought you to Mexico, and what do you enjoy most about Mexican culture and style? I first went on a study abroad in high school, and I could never get enough. In a place where I was more vulnerable than I have ever been in my life, the group of friends I made chose to lift me up, teach me, educate me, and most of all, accept me. There is nothing I could ever do to repay Colima for the eye-opening it gave me at such a young age. Siempre Viva is my life testament to give back and live to the fullest. Can you explain how you source pieces and items for the shop? I collaborate with artisans who already have a skill in a particular area, whether it be weaving, sewing, leather working, etc. We work together to design patterns that I believe will be most appealing to my customers. We have a formula we use from the Fair Trade Federation that helps us come up with a fair cost for the item while honoring fair pay to the artisans, based on where they live.

I’ve read that you provide employment opportunities for women in Mexico. Can you explain that process? My goal is to provide sustainable access to women in Mexico—meaning, when I hire a woman to work for me, I want that person to be able to rely on consistent employment so that they can use the income to better their families how they see fit. It is also important to me that the women are doing jobs that empower them and give them dignity. Most of the women openly share how proud they are to share their craft with the outside world. What is the mission and purpose behind Siempre Viva? The mission of Siempre Viva is to empower women through ethically made clothing and gifts, while providing an uplifting experience. Since I began, I wanted to show myself that though I may not be a millionaire, small changes over time can create real positive outcomes in the communities in which I work. Where do you see Siempre Viva in five years? What’s your ultimate goal with the company? I would like to continue to grow our retail side of the business, which will allow me to sustainably employ artisans. My ultimate goal is not only to empower artisans, but also to educate my customer base about how powerful their spending power can be. By choosing to support other companies who give back or take on similar business models, I can further my goal of providing employment to artisans across the globe. Any changes you’d like to see within the retail industry? My biggest fight is against fast fashion. About 99% of the boutiques that I compete with buy items at a very low price, mark it way up, and then have huge sales to give the impression of a good deal. However, this cycle causes massive transparency and disassociation issues in how those items were made. I want to connect my customer with the person who made their clothes so that they have a personal interest in wearing them. Any fall trends to be on the lookout for? COVID-Chic is the name of the game this year. Watch out for monochromatic jogger outfits and casual denim in the fall!

“I CAN’T DESCRIBE IT. IT’S JUST A PASSION LIKE NO OTHER.” — JAVIER LECLERC

A

s you drive up to Javier Leclerc’s sprawling property in Edmond, it’s easy to see he has a fascination with fast cars. In one of his garages sit a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, a Mercedes Benz AMG G-T-R and a Porsche 911 Carrera. With their matte gray painting, tinted windows and eyecatching wheels, they are the embodiment of sleek, style and speed. Yet when Leclerc wants to show off one of his eight automobiles that run, he has to walk to the other side of his driveway and open his second garage. Sitting right next to a flaming red Corvette is his prized 1976 Chevy C10 truck with blue and white stripes. To say it looks out of place would be an understatement. “When I finished it, to me it was perfect as far as a truck goes. It was untouched

50 LUXI E R E

before I bought it, and I’m the only one who has ever modified the truck,” said Leclerc. “The color was one of my favorites; the model was one of my favorites.” Despite it being perfect, at one point Leclerc had sold the truck to a friend because that’s what he does. Restore and sell automobiles. However, the 47-year old instantly regretted selling his prized truck. “I started looking for another project like it, but finding a one-owner, unmolested vehicle is impossible,” said Leclerc. “So I just wanted it back because I would never find anything like it again.” Leclerc ended up doing something that may sound quite astounding to novice car buyers or even to experience car junkies. He traded his 2017 Shelby GT 350 to get his Chevy truck back in his garage. “The good thing about this truck is that it’ll always

appreciate,” said Leclerc. “That Mustang at some point is going to be worth less. That’s what people don’t understand. This [1976 Chevy truck] has AC and a nice stereo. I can drive it wherever I want to and if it breaks down, I know I have a bag of tools next to me and can work on it. If a new car breaks down, I have to call a tow truck or dealership.” Leclerc’s passion for anything to do with automobiles began when he was just a kid growing up in Puerto Rico. His mom drove his family around in a 1978 Blazer, a similar body type to his Chevy truck. Around the same time, Leclerc first got bit by the car bug, which has never left him. “I used to joke with my dad because I used to know every model of car that every member of the family had. I used to pay attention to that, and I didn’t

know why,” said Leclerc. “When I was 13 or so, my neighbor’s grandpa had a ‘69 Chevelle and it was slightly customized. That was the first time I saw that car and heard it. That sparked my interest in cars in general. It became my passion.” Leclerc took that passion with him when he moved to Oklahoma in 1995. Even after he joined the Coast Guard, he continued to work as a motorcycle mechanic for almost 10 years. In 2005 he opened up his own businesses. He started Superior Concepts in Edmond, which focused on window tinting and accessories for high-end and exotic cars. “On the side, I still built cars in the garage because that’s what I love to do,” said Leclerc. “And making them go fast, obviously, and making them sound louder. I was fortunate enough that I was able to sell my business about seven years ago.” At the tender age of 40, Leclerc thought he was ready to retire. He and his wife, Gwen, manage a 44-lot land development in Edmond and began creating what they hope becomes the best residential area in Oklahoma. Still, Leclerc couldn’t stay away from his garage and building cars for his enjoyment. “Then it became a business again. And now I am building cars for customers and buying and selling cars,” said Leclerc. “I have two guys fulltime at a shop, building.” For the second time, Leclerc started up a business with D.I. Motorwerz. Despite the hours he works on his customers’ cars, he considers himself still partly retired. Yet Leclerc always finds time to head over to his garage and tinker on a multitude of unfinished projects. “I can’t describe it,” said Leclerc. “It’s just a passion like no other.”

hen the word began to spread that Chef Andrew Black was going to open a restaurant called Grey Sweater, Black received some confused looks. He was even asked if it was going to be a clothing store. Yet for Black, the name Grey Sweater made perfect sense for what he wanted to build in the heart of Oklahoma City. “Grey has no allegiance. And so the food in this room has no allegiance,” Black said. “The sweater is the warmth of the service that we offer, and that’s what Grey Sweater is. Grey Sweater is a continuing journey—it never ends. It’s a lifestyle.” The journey has taken Black around the world waiting for the right moment to cross paths with the right place. Originally from Jamaica, he’s had stops that have included Paris, Cuba, Memphis, and Turks and Caicos, among others. Then 15 years ago, Black had to be convinced to give Oklahoma a try. Even after he begrudgingly made the decision to work at the Skirvin Hotel, he thought it was just going to be another stop on his journey before moving on. “I decided to give it a chance, and I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it for a year’,” Black said. “And then two years into it, I was still here. Three years, I didn’t unpack, four years, I didn’t unpack. So the fifth year I decided to unpack, and now it’s home for me.” Now Black says he’s become one of the biggest cheerleaders of the state and its restaurant scene and is constantly singing the state’s praises to anyone who will listen. He knew Oklahoma City was the right spot to unleash his master plan. Black partnered with Rudy Khouri and took the ground floor of The Maywood apartment complex in downtown Oklahoma City. Their consortium includes Grey Sweater, La Baguette and Black Walnut. “We wanted to make sure that these three restaurants were built in such a way that we never grew bored of coming here,” Black said. Grey Sweater has proven to be a totally unique dining experience. The small, intimate, reservation-only eatery has quickly become a go-to spot since its opening in September of 2019. “When we embarked upon doing Grey Sweater, we knew we wanted to do something without boundaries and barriers,” Black said. “We knew we wanted to do something as far as your imagination could stretch. We knew we wanted to offer food from all over the world.” Black’s mantra of no allegiance stretches into the food as well. There are no sacred dishes that have to be kept year-round. Even the chef himself is unable to pick one to call his favorite. “It’s hard to say what my favorite dish is because I’m not committed to it,” Black said. “I could love it today and move on to something better tomorrow. There are a few things that appear on the menu only because they are signature dishes that people love. But I can’t promise they’ll be there the next six, seven months. Owing no allegiance, a freedom of flavor takes guests on a journey to places undiscovered.” Grey Sweater doesn’t provide the standard à la carte style. Instead, they allow patrons to choose from a three-tier tasting menu to complete a 3-course, 5-course or 10-course meal. Even with just 45 seats, Black doesn’t want patrons of Grey Sweater to ever feel rushed. In his mind, the meal is the focus, but there are other elements to the experience. The conversations and the atmosphere make up a big part of what the Grey Sweater experience is all about. “It’s a place where I’ve seen people get engaged,” Black said. “We’ve seen so many good stories. We’ve met so many lifelong friends that join us, and not just guests, but also staff. You can’t ask for much more.”

THE ART OF FOOD

WITH CAFÉ CONTEMPORARY

From head-turning architecture to a diverse menu, Oklahoma Contemporary’s new café is as unique as it gets. The brains behind the concept, Avery Cannon walks us through its creation. S TO R Y BY VA L E N T I N A G U T I E R R E Z P H OTO G R A P HY BY K E N N O N B RYC E

very Cannon’s take on groundbreaking food concepts and appreciation for finely selected ingredients has translated into a series of innovative restaurants in Oklahoma, such as Empire Slice House and Wheeze the Juice. Now, Cannon is embarking on a new project that has been a year in the making: Café Contemporary, a place where people can enjoy art in its many forms, including gastronomy. Cannon has taken the time to dive in deeply and rediscover his passion for food. “I believe that this is an elevated traditional café in some form. We offer a full coffee service, beer, wine, soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta plates,” he said. “The vision was always for Oklahoma Contemporary to have a café. I was not looking to start a new restaurant. Luckily, this project was presented to me and I saw it as a great opportunity to get into the food game again.”

“FOOD BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER LIKE NOTHING ELSE CAN. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME THAN NOW.” —AVERY CANNON, CAFÉ CONTEMPORARY

Like any other art form, before a piece is revealed, there is extensive research on materials, mediums, trials, and errors. As a consumer, we can overlook the process that chefs undergo before determining if a particular dish will make it to the menu. Cannon and his team, Chef Neely Hopper and Pastry Chef Kristen Steimer, wanted to create a café based on innovation and inclusivity. “Directionally, we wanted to make a modern dinner with a menu that encapsulates every aspect of food. If you’re vegan, a meat-eater, or a vegetarian, it can all be intertwined in a way that creates a unique experience.” Creating menu items for Café Contemporary was a creative and collaborative experience. “We got together once a week, played music, and got to explore things as a team,” explained Cannon. “I would do a soup or a salad. Neely would create a pasta dish. Kristen would bake, then we would all bring it together and taste everything. Some days, nothing would work out. But then there were those moments when we instantly knew that what we put together was, in fact, coming together.” When asked about what makes his team unique, he said without hesitation, “I enjoy the fact that there is an age gap between the three of us. Neely was able to bring a set of skills to our team that you can only gain through years of experience… I have a lot of respect for Kristen, and she is just incredibly talented.” It may seem like an odd time to open a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic, but Cannon’s enthusiasm, passion for food, and gratitude overpower any challenge. “Opening at a slower pace has allowed us to devote more time to the process and fine-tune the menu, dishes, and ingredients to a point that we are deeply satisfied with. The café has a door that connects directly to the parking lot, which has been extremely beneficial for to-go customers, since it allows us to simply deliver the food directly to their car.”

56 LUXI E R E

The next order of business for Café Contemporary is to transition into a seasonal menu, elevating the quality and freshness of the dishes, while following the European gastronomic approach. When we asked Cannon about the future of gastronomy, one can see how community plays a significant role in his purpose. “I would love to see the different districts come together even more. I would love to see people experiencing the food the south side has to offer and vice versa. We can learn a lot from each other through food. Food brings people together like nothing else can. There has never been a better time than now.”

ith every new season comes change and growth. Fresh, crisp air, pumpkin-spice everything, and of course, those beautiful fall leaves are soon to be a part of our worlds. Sisters Leah and Lauren Palmer, owners of floral design studio The Wild Mother, are no strangers to the ebb and flow of a new season. The unique studio serves as a space for creativity and for tending to colorful blooms as well as creating designs and floral arrangements for special occasions. “The Wild Mother is a paradox—the embodiment of the divine feminine—fearsome and nurturing, awe inspiring and accessible, dangerous and loving,” said Leah. “We want all of our floral arrangements to incorporate elements that communicate the feminine spirit.” The sisters believe in not only creating beauty, but also hosting workshops to discuss societal and racial injustices occurring today. Using their platform as business owners, Leah and Lauren hope to raise awareness and create change, one conversation at a time. “Our vision of The Wild Mother has helped us withstand incredibly difficult times; even today—in the midst of a wildly uncomfortable year—we prop up The Wild Mother as an act of courage,” said Leah. Here, we chat with Leah about the journey behind the business, the best fall foliage, and her hopes for the future. How did your love of floral arrangements begin? In college, Lauren would peruse the tiny floral section in the Shawnee Walmart almost daily, searching for the best the little town could offer in exchange for the few dollars she made teaching weekend piano lessons. She would return home with generic grocery-store flowers and somehow manage to turn them into masterpieces. I was simply an observer of her work, studying the way she interacted with each bloom and placed it in the vessel. Our friends also noticed her skill when her arrangements graced the dinner table. They would eventually

58 LUXI E R E

ask Lauren to make bouquets for their weddings. We worked together on projects, and the passion and excitement for creating art with natural materials grew rapidly. The Wild Mother was founded in 2012 and the floral design studio was open to the public in 2019. Leah explained the sisters’ inspiration, “Our love for flowers and created beauty is an ancestral love manifested in us today. Our ancestors loved the earth and cultivated the land, and I like to imagine that they were always artists and healers, using creation to serve the community. Participating in a reciprocal relationship to Earth is truly the impetus for The Wild Mother Creative Studios.” What inspired the idea to open a flower design studio? In 2012, Lauren and I were having extensive conversations, listening to our spirits and dreaming of our futures. As Black

women who had worked and lived in oppressive settings, we were excited by the idea of working for ourselves—a place where our creativity could be uninhibited by others’ limited perspectives. We imagined a space where people could submerge in various art forms—narrative, poetry, music, performance, and visual art—and draw from the power of a community. We imagined a platform from which our voices and others would be fully expressed. Although event and wedding floral has become the staple of our Creative Studio, we often say to our followers that they are “witnessing more than just flowers.” What is the purpose behind The Wild Mother? We believe our business represents a journey of freedom and healing for us, our ancestors, and our descendants: “Healing forwards and backwards.” Cultivating leadership and self-actualization honors our ancestors and carves out space for our descendants. What events does The Wild Mother create arrangements for? Whether for an event with over a thousand guests or for a micro-wedding, our typical client is hosting an unforgettable celebration that engulfs their guests in sensory experiences and communicates a clear message or story throughout. When we pitch concepts to our clients, we call them Floral Stories as a means to help them consider their event in terms of a narrative arc. Ultimately, we are offering story-driven floral and event services that connect you and yours back to each other. In addition to serving brides and grooms, we’ve had the honor of working for organizations like DowntownOKC (2017), The Obama Foundation (2018), and Flourish OKC (2019). Using your platform as local business owners, what do you hope to accomplish both personally and as a local business in the OKC community?

I would like to see more of Oklahoma City’s small businesses join us in fostering a vision that centers community wellness above the individual’s personal gain. It may require sacrifice and restructuring pre-existing systems, but the outcome would be incredibly beneficial to all.

In that spirit, Lauren and I founded The Conversation Workshops, a project born out of a need to connect people in conversations about systemic racism. After two years of writing curriculum with our co-creators and a full year of piloting at Oklahoma State University, the antiracist workshops have become an online course that teaches ways to respond to systems of racism. The course is suitable for working at a self-guided pace or for groups working through the curriculum together. You can learn more about our work by visiting www. conversationworkshopsok.com or our social media channels @conversationworkshopsok. Tell us about The Wild Mother workshops. Outside our typical events and by-appointment studio, we occasionally host opportunities for the

public to play in flowers with us, inspiring them to set a table and invite friends to share intimate moments together. We hope to encourage beauty in the home by making floral arrangement accessible to novices. Workshops are a powerful way to connect with the people who love our brand but are not planning an event. Some of our favorite responses say that the afternoon spent in our studio was therapeutic and healing. Best flowers for a fall arrangement? There are so many fall beauties, but I always look forward to fall foliage, such as Cotinus or ninebark. These lay a beautiful backdrop, create contrast, and add hints of drama in ways that standard green foliage simply cannot. Also, the burgundy and coppery foliages often add a woodsy and spicy aroma to the sweetness of a standard rose. It’s truly magical. If you could create floral arrangements for any place or event, what would it be? Lauren and I have a dream to create editorial floral installations for film and video sets. We often joke that we could close up shop and die happy after working on the set of Beyoncé’s music video or a BBC classic! Future plans for The Wild Mother? Each week, we use our Instagram account to publish weekly arrangements and bouquets that are available for curb-side pickup. This practice will last through the duration of our social-distancing practices. Anyone looking to experience The Wild Mother can purchase what we’ve lovingly called Friday Flower Saturday Sale. Our dreams include compiling our best practices and tips for hosting an awe-inspiring event from home. We are working to empower people, especially men, with inspiration for their own moment-making.

Ansel and Georgia It is palpable here—the grounding energy of the land, the connection to centuries of creatives, the culture of freedom seekers. This Vata energy brings your awareness back to your own sacred vision. The Pueblo people believe the earth is “imbued with the breath, thoughts and feelings of all who have walked on it,” a transfer point of energy where there is no time barrier.

Abiquiu is the Western corner of a triangular space reaching to Taos and Santa Fe with lines passing through Ojo Caliente’s ancient natural hot springs, Hernandez, pictured in Ansel Adam’s “Moonrise” and Chimayo, the home of legendary weavers. The deteriorated adobe structure there, next to the chapel dating back to the 1730’s, was long coveted by O’Keeffe, who after 13 years finally persuaded the Roman Catholic to transfer occupancy to her in 1943. Her studio opened to the river valley below, and to Pedrenal, the mesa she introduced to the world through her paintings, behind. She would travel by foot to Plaza Blanca, “The White Place” and by Model A Ford to “The Black Place”, the subjects of many of her works. Although well known, Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams were not the first artists to feel a calling to Northern New Mexico for inspiration. Even they were beneficiaries of invitations to the area by other artists to collaborate.

Lawrence and Huxley North of Taos in San Cristobal nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains is Taos Goji Farm. The Vom Dorp family, originally from Sweden, has cultivated the garden and maintained the cabins for over 40 years. In the early 20th century the land was the retreat of British writers D.H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley. The micro valley continues to cultivate more than Goji berries and vegetables. Family-made sculptures, a library of vintage mindfulness books and WOOFERS (organic farm apprentices) are ever present among the sagebrush to conspire with you to find whatever you seek in the space.

“For the whole life-effort of man was to get his life into contact with the elemental life of the cosmos, mountain-life, cloud-life, thunder-life, airlife, earth-life, sun-life. To come into immediate felt contact, and so derive energy, power, and a dark sort of joy. This effort into sheer naked contact, without an intermediary or mediator, is the root meaning of religion.” -D. H Lawrence 1924
