BEAUTY

Any must-have spring makeup products? I recommend swapping your heavy foundation to a BB cream or tinted moisturizer. I love Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. This multitasking blend of skincare and makeup blurs imperfections with sheer hints of coverage and SPF30. If you prefer more coverage, I recommend trying Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm SPF30. It’s complete coverage with a built-in primer, moisturizer, oil controller, and sunscreen.

5. Natura Bisse C+C Vitamin Sheer Fluid: This color-enhancing firming moisturizer is sweat and humidity-resistant, with an adaptable color that provides an even, luminous tone. Laura Mercier Translucent Pressed Powder sets makeup for 16 hours and controls shine for eight hours. It’s a great setting powder for anyone who is active and on the go.

6. La Mer The Moisturizing Matte Lotion: If you prefer a matte finish or if your skin is oily, this lotion blurs lines and pores and gives you an Instagram-ready complexion. 7. Natura Bisse Inhibit Retinol Eye Lift: Now like never before, our eyes are a major focus when we wear masks. This product delivers spectacular lifting results and prevents the appearance of lines.

16 LUXI E R E

Another must-have for me is Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Shadow Sticks. They’re transfer resistant, waterproof and you can skip the brushes and blend them with your fingers. They are perfect for travel, easy to use, and there are more than 40 shades.

Spring cleaning can play a big role in renewing our routines. Any spring cleaning tips for replacing winter products for spring? As you tweak your regimen for the new season, don’t forget to throw out old makeup or skincare products. Cosmetics with sunscreen have an expiration date on them. If it does not have an expiration date, it will have a little symbol of an open jar with number on it. That will tell you how many months the product is good for since you open the container. You can write down a date with a sharpie when you open your new product to keep up with the expiration. Apart from throwing out old products, it’s also important to sanitize your makeup and skincare tools. Tools like makeup brushes, face rollers, and sponges require regular cleaning to prevent product buildup. Fill in the blanks. Swap____ for ____ as the season changes from winter to spring. Swap your winter makeup colors to spring tones. Pinks and corals are great for spring because they look fresh and youthful. Trish McEvoy Planner will allow you to swap colors with seasons, as it comes with a magnetic page that allows you to customize your makeup. And don’t forget about your fragrance—have something lighter and more floral for spring. My top picks for spring and summer from Bond 9 are Astor Place, High Line and Shelter Island. Do you recommend any skin treatments for the new season? I recommend deep-clean treatments to clean out congestion beneath the skin. Targeted peels for hyperpigmentation can also improve the appearance of the face, hands or neck, taking off dead cells to reveal brighter skin. Micro-needling can help create a collagen boost—it’s an amazing tool for unclogging pores, brightening your tone, and overall texture. Any at-home facials people can try? Natura Bisse Inhibit High Definition Patches is a non-invasive anti-wrinkle treatment that visibly rejuvenates the appearance of your skin. Trish McEvoy Correct and Brighten Professional Strength Multi-Acid Weekly Peel is another easy facial you can do once a week. It instantly brightens the complexion in one rinse-free step. The peel visibly improves uneven skin tones, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and blemish scars with continued weekly use. Can you give us a simple step-by-step spring/summer skincare routine? Cleanse twice a day. Once a week, use a face scrub in the morning instead of cleanser. Use toner or a face mist after cleansing, then follow up with a serum. Use a moisturizer, even if you feel like your skin produces a lot of oil (If your skin tends to be oily, you can always try an oil-free formula). Use an eye cream twice a week. Dedicate one day a week for self-care and put on a face mask. Wear sunscreen daily.

oday, he’s leading a company—Moleculera Labs—that provides next-generation antibody tests that detect whether an autoimmune reaction is causing neurologic or psychiatric symptoms. The company is dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults impacted by infection-induced autoimmune diseases. The research that sparked the precision medicine company was developed by Madeleine Cunningham, Ph.D., a George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the OU Health Sciences Center, who is a co-founder and chief scientific officer of Moleculera Labs. Dr. Cunningham’s initial research led to what became known as the “Cunningham Panel” as she conducted studies into a disturbing condition in children known as PANDAS, or Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep. When the clinical study ended, anxious parents continued contacting Dr. Cunningham seeking help for their children. “That’s when Dr. Cunningham came to me and said, “How can we help these hurting people now that the study is concluded?” Dr. Shimasaki recalled. “And that was when we co-founded the company in 2011.” PANDAS occurs when the immune system produces antibodies intended to fight an infection but instead the antibodies mistakenly attack healthy tissue in the child’s brain, resulting in inflammation and inducing a sudden onset of movement disorders, neuropsychiatric symptoms and abnormal neurologic behaviors. “When antibodies attack our joints, we call it rheumatoid arthritis,” Dr. Shimasaki said. “But when they attack our brains, sometimes we call it mental illness or rebellious kids or even just bad parenting—a whole host of things. But if it’s identified and biologic, you can actually treat it.” Once PANDAS is identified, parents can seek treatment for the underlying condition with anti-infectives and immune modulators. saki recalls one child in particular from years ago, a then 8-year-old boy named Adam. “He was diagnosed with ADHD, and they thought he had autism,” Dr. Shimasaki said. “His parents considered putting him in a psychiatric hospital because they didn’t know how they could help him. And then they heard about us.” After Adam was diagnosed with PANDAS by his doctor with the aid of Moleculera Labs’ test panel, he was successfully treated for an infection and his immune system dysfunction. A few months back, his mother sent me his picture,” Dr. Shimasaki said. “He’s now running high school cross country,” she said, “Recovery is possible. He’s 10,000 times better.” Moleculera Labs has tested more than 11,000 patients and has expanded the scope of its testing to include many other chronic disorders, including ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, and many others. They are now doing research to include an autoimmune heart panel and a post-COVID autoimmune syndrome panel. Dr. Shimasaki and his wife, Verna, a realtor, have two adult daughters who both live in California, which sparks a question. What keeps him here in Oklahoma City when he’s a West Coast native? “I would say it’s the great people, openness to innovation and entrepreneurial culture, the quality of life and, of course, the lack of traffic compared to San Francisco or Los Angeles,” he said with a laugh. “All this combines into why Oklahoma is a great place to build a company because there is an entrepreneurial history with the oil booms and the risk-taking mindset to drill holes in the ground and look for oil.” Dr. Shimasaki cites a passage from one of his books, where he compares the five essential elements of building an entrepreneurial culture to farming: You need good seed, soil, water, fertilizer and an experienced farmer; these equate to innovative ideas, incubators, access to capital, a trained workforce and seasoned entrepreneurs. Oklahoma City has all of those elements. “This is a very progressive, innovative, entrepreneurial-minded group of people,” he said. — ABOUT ROD WHITSON – Rod Whitson is based in Oklahoma City and serves as a strategic advisor to high-performing CEOs leading growth companies. rod.whitson@vistagechair.com

EDWARDS with his teammates at the Gene Rainbolt Graduate School of Business.

Tell us more about the type of industries and projects that are a good fit for your MBA Consulting Project and consulting practicum. We look for projects which are meaningful to the students as well as helpful to the client companies, and we have been able to be very creative in our assignments. Some of our projects include financial analysis, market research, data analysis, digital marketing, etc. Industries include hospitality, banking, energy, healthcare, sports management, consumer products, aerospace and defense and management consulting. We will be working with over 60 companies this fall. These relationships are extremely important to both our program and our students, and we have to get it right. What is the best piece of advice you have received in your career? There have been several, but one of the best is “Don’t burn bridges, because you’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river.” What is one thing you hope all of your students will take with them from their time in the program? Confidence in their ability to solve complex problems, either working alone or within a team setting. What was a seemingly small decision that ended up dramatically changing the course of your life? A random phone conversation I had with Jim Wheeler in 2011. Jim was largely responsible for starting the entrepreneurship program in Price College in the early 2000’s. I had taught a course in this program as an adjunct in-

26 LUXI E R E

structor for six or seven years. I made the mistake of telling Jim I was looking for a new challenge. Within days, I was having lunch with the Dean of the College, and when offered the position, I told the Dean I would commit for three years; he countered with five. That was 10 years ago. As it turns out, I was the real winner in that negotiation. How do you believe learning has changed for students in the past 10 years? The delivery of classroom content has changed significantly. “Online” was kind of a 4-letter word among the academics. We were heading in that direction at a measured pace, but the pandemic probably sped up our online delivery by five years. Our faculty has done an outstanding job in record time of redesigning their courses to be delivered face to face, online, or in a hybrid format. The pandemic forced it, but they amazingly met the challenge. Another big change is that learning with phones, tablets and computers has become ubiquitous; students can learn from anywhere at any time, 24/7. There are more courses available in more places than any time in history. We cannot be satisfied for a moment with our course offerings. To remain relevant, we must keep pushing the education envelope. What are you reading now? In addition to an early morning devotional, I’m finishing Three Wise Men, a true story of three brothers who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq for different branches of the US Military. I’m about to start Think Again by Adam Grant.

What is the best part of your job? A couple of things, really. I especially enjoy working with our extremely talented students, as well as companies located in Oklahoma and around the country. We try to find the right fit between our student talent and a company’s personnel need. When a solid match does occur, it can be truly life changing for a student and result in an extreme sense of accomplishment for everyone involved. I also enjoy working with my colleagues at Price College – particularly the team at the Gene Rainbolt Graduate School of Business in OKC. We have professionals working hard to recruit, admit, advise, teach, develop and place students. All are extremely committed to both the University and the students. They make my role very enjoyable. What is one of your favorite life’s “luxuries?” I have a very blessed life, but an outstanding summer evening for me is grilling steaks outdoors at 8,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies with family and friends – tongs in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other. That’s about as good as it gets for me. — KATI HANNA is a partner with The Mettise Group, a full-service consulting firm based in Oklahoma City. A HELPING HAND:

INTERVIEW WITH VALERIE RILEY OF LIFESQUIRE

BUSINESS

ometimes it just feels like there’s not enough time in the day. With work, errands, and everyday tasks, we could all use an extra hand (or two) these days. Now, there’s a reasonable solution to the overflowing to-do lists that often consume our minds. LifeSquire is the relief for busy and overwhelmed people, offering part-time or fulltime help through curated assistant processes. Think your own personal assistant without the hassle of scheduling and managing along the way. Here, we chat with LifeSquire owner, Valerie Riley about services offered, how to know it’s time to hire an assistant, and the advantages of using LifeSquire. What are some common myths or assumptions people make about having an assistant? People feel guilty for needing help. They think having an assistant is only for the elite. The reality is that we are all busy, and we are only getting busier. A wise use of your time and resources is to outsource the things that no longer serve you. LifeSquire is a practical solution to the elusive idea of “having it all.” Are LifeSquire assistants your employees or contractors? They are all our employees, so they are covered by our insurance and workers comp. This also means we manage them; you just get the benefit of help without the headache of managing another person. How are you handling concerns about COVID? What precautions are you taking? As a company, we have our staff meetings via Zoom, so we limit exposure amongst assistants and clients. Further, all assistants are required to wear masks and practice social distancing when running errands. If anyone shows any signs of being sick, they are required to take a COVID test and quarantine as necessary. Luckily for our clients, because we are a team, we always have a backup assistant available!

BUSINESS

SPENDING OUR TIME SAVING YOU TIME LifeSquire is the nation’s top personal assistant firm, delivering first-class support to hard-working clientele.

What are some of the most common ways people use LifeSquire? This is always such a hard question to answer because everyone’s todo list looks a bit different. We help with laundry, animal and childcare, administrative tasks for our business owner clients, car maintenance, meeting service providers and a slew of other things that get stuck on your list. How do you know when it’s time to hire an assistant? We have a little hack to figure this out. Try to think of what your hourly rate is if you charged that way. Then look at a typical week of to-do’s that you either are procrastinating doing or don’t have time to get to, and add up how much time that would take you. Then decide how much more money or time you could be creating for yourself by not doing that list. You get to be a brilliant business owner, a wonderful parent, an attentive child – you don’t have to worry about your laundry anymore. Why would someone use a service verses hiring their own employee? The biggest reason is that we manage your assistant. You are allowed the freedom of just creating a to-do list and being relieved when it’s done. You never have to worry about being without help – you’ll always have a backup assistant. Lastly, we developed proprietary technology that allows all of your communication to be done through our app. You will see when your assistant clocks in and out, what tasks they’ve completed, and what’s on the list for the next day. Also, all of our assistants have access to a LifeSquire company credit card, so you never have to worry about exchanging money of any kind with your assistant. What is your favorite thing someone has said about the service? Recently a client told us that we are the first service she used that focused on making her feel special, without attaching any guilt to that feeling. We care deeply for our clients and that was music to our ears!

emember the sweet sound of a live audience cheering to a thick guitar riff or a solo drum session? That feeling of singing to the melody of a favorite song alongside another person who appreciates music just as much as you do. Yeah, the memory is faint for us too. But after a full year of essentially no live music, The Jones Assembly, sponsored by First National Bank of Oklahoma, is bringing back live shows with its MusicFirst event. MusicFirst is the brainchild of Social Order Dining Collective partner and co-owner of The Jones Assembly, Brian Bogert, and Graham Colton, also co-owner of The Jones Assembly. MusicFirst is keeping music alive, hosting live shows from genres all over the board Monday through Friday each week. From singer songwriter to rock and pop, The Jones Assembly is bringing back live music for listeners and musicians one show at a time. To learn more about MusicFirst, we chat with Bogert about the story behind creating the event, Oklahoma City’s growth into a music city, and concerts and shows to come. Tell me about MusicFirst at The Jones Assembly. After we safely re-opened in June due to the pandemic, we knew that it would be a while before we were able to host full-scale concerts again. Food, spirits, and music are the three pillars of our business model, and we wanted to make sure we could still deliver on all three. With that in mind, we began music on the patio the first full week we opened back up. We are fortunate to have a large spacious patio. We knew patio dining would be premium for our guests, and therefore we would have a built-in audience for our performers. What was the inspiration behind hosting shows every night? How did that come about and what sparked the idea? The pandemic hit local musicians and gig workers just as hard as it did restaurants. Suddenly, there was nowhere for live performers to play. We always knew we wanted to have nightly live music eventually, but it became clear that we needed to have this staple of The Jones Assembly reimagined. We decided we needed to help keep music alive in Oklahoma City. So much momentum was happening in the music scene in OKC prior to the pandemic, and we didn’t want that to stop. We made the decision while we were closed that we needed to do whatever we could to support our local performers. I pitched the idea to Mel Martin at First National Bank of Oklahoma, and without hesitation he saw the value in this endeavor for the community. First National Bank of Oklahoma has graciously helped fund the series through the rest of the year. What genres/artists is The Jones bringing in for this? From bluegrass to singer songwriter to country and rock, the genres are all

COMMUNITY

over the board. The one common thread is that all of the artists are from Oklahoma. How do you decide which artists will be playing at The Jones? It started with artists we knew, had worked with, or friends. My business partner, Graham Colton, is an influential figure in the Oklahoma music scene, so he has been instrumental in booking a diverse group of local artists. At first, it started with 7-8 artists and then they in turn started spreading the word to their friends. From there, we started fielding inquiries and demos. So far, we have had over 150 weeknight performances on the patio since we started this series last June, and have featured over 50 local artists. What excites you all the most about hosting a show every night? In my opinion, nothing beats the energy that a live performer provides. Seeing our guests dining and enjoying live music in a safe outdoor space during the difficult year and forgetting about the outside world for a while is priceless. The consistency of nightly live music is really resonating with OKC residents, and just knowing that our local artists have a platform to play every weeknight is pretty special. How would you describe the current Oklahoma music scene? How has it changed over the years? I think over the last four or five years the live music scene has put OKC on the map. In the past, we were often a drive-through city for touring national acts. When Graham and I moved back from Dallas in 2003, having nightly access to live music and concerts was the biggest void we found in the city. I never would have imagined in the same night that The Killers would be playing at The Zoo Amphitheatre, MGMT would be performing at The Criterion and St. Paul & The Broken Bones would be playing The Jones Assembly in the summer of 2019— and they were all sold out shows. I think that’s a testament to how OKC has become a top tier music destination. When Graham, Scott Marsh and our group produced the Kings of Leon concert at the Scissortail Park Grand Opening and over 25,000 people attended, it really felt like OKC had arrived as a music town. What do you hope to bring to the Oklahoma music/creative scene through weekday shows? I just think we have a great opportunity for our community to support local artists and hopefully we’ll encourage continued support for shows at all of our local music venues when it’s safe to do so. We are so fortunate to have multiple venues in this city now. When concerts start back up again at all of these venues, I really hope our city does all they can to buy tickets, attend shows, and support live music. The music scene wasn’t always flourishing like it was prepandemic and I just hope guests will continue to patronize restaurants, bars, and concert venues across the city that showcase live music.

Hopes for the future/future plans? We hope to continue MusicFirst for years to come so that our local performers always have a stage to play on. Any up-and-coming artists coming to The Jones that we should be on the lookout for? Outside of the talented lineup of local artists we showcase nightly, our first full venue concert will be Friday, June 25th as Americana Country & Blues artist Charley Crockett hits the stage. He

will be bringing his full band to the The Jones and I’m very excited about this one. We hope to really start ramping up again with large-scale concerts in late summer and fall, and our 2022 calendar is already filling up with some exciting returning and first time to OKC acts. Stay tuned!

school, and then they told me I needed to get a research experience because I kept asking all these questions,” she says. Her family’s physician had also been kind and encouraging to her, allowing her to go on rounds with him, and he also thought getting some research experience was a good idea for the young woman who was so interested in knowing why one patient could respond to an illness or a treatment so much differently than another. She applied to the Fleming Scholar summer research program at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation but had to do so three times before she got in. “The first two times I was turned down. The first time they told me that I needed to apply when I was in college. The second time, they told me I needed to get some research experience before I could get this research experience,” she says, laughing. By then a student at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, she found a rather ingenious way to use an undergraduate zoology course to fashion some research experience for herself. In this particular class, each student was assigned a fish, a snake or a tarantula to study. James was hoping for a fish, because, as a chemistry major, she saw lots of research opportunities with the fish. She did not want a snake. Not a fan. She bluffed a little bit, acting really interested in the snakes, talking about the snakes, all in an attempt to sway the universe into sending a fish her way. She got a tarantula. Her tarantula turned out to be her eightlegged ticket to a research project. James had heard about a scientist at Oklahoma State University who was looking at different kinds of toxins. She and her tarantula took a little road trip to Stillwater where our heroine learned to milk venom from it, which was then analyzed for an academic research project. Tenacity and creativity are two traits every researcher must have. “And that’s how I became a Fleming Scholar,” she says. James wanted to become a physician in the first place because she has terrible asthma and wanted to figure that disease out. “It made me really interested in medicine and in how we could do better.” Living on a farm, many of her biggest allergens were right outside the door. The newly minted Fleming Scholar was ready to tackle asthma research. At the time, though, there wasn’t any asthma research happening in Oklahoma. “I met a physician-scientist, an MD/PhD, something that I hadn’t even heard of before, who was a board-certified allergist and immunologist who was doing autoimmunity research,” she says. So she’d decided to learn all she could from him about autoimmune disease, thinking that because asthma might have an autoimmunity component. Instead, she found a career path, thanks to a pair of patients. “During that summer, he took me to the

hospital to see some patients, and two of the patients I met were both 19 years old, and I was 20. And one of them did really well and one of them unfortunately passed away in the ICU. It was really striking to me that, even though we had known about his disease for hundreds of years, we still really didn’t understand why some patients did well and others didn’t.” After medical school, James ended up taking care of the patient who’d done well. Around the same time, she also met patients with lupus and that cemented her determination. “Autoimmunity tends to affect predominantly women, and young women, between 15 and 45 years old, so during their peak years to have children. Autoimmune diseases afflict between 1 and 7 to 1 in 12 people, so I became really passionate about figuring out how we can improve the lives of patients who have autoimmune diseases. My research has really focused on what are the first things that will go wrong and if is there any way that we could actually prevent the transition to these autoimmune diseases.”

A research partnership with the Department of Defense led to an important discovery: A genetic predisposition toward autoimmune disease occurs in families and abnormal antibodies can be present a decade before the disease presents. A huge breakthrough. “We thought ‘Wow, this is where lupus starts.’” Discoveries like the one above are crucial to solving the puzzle of complex disease, and they’re so exciting that they’ll move a scientist to the scientist’s version of giddiness. As she puts it, “There’s nothing cooler than being the first person to know something.”

WILLIAM’S WORLD:

THE MIND BEHIND GRAEBER DESIGN A quarter century later, Graeber’s become something of a maestro, designing and building custom furniture for clients across the country.

BY CHRISTINE EDDINGTON PHOTOS BY ERIC GRANADO AND WILLIAM GRAEBER

W

illiam Graeber has at least three superpowers. One is that he can make precise calculations, design and engineer furniture in his mind. He sees his thought process as though he’s writing it out on a chalkboard, and he can hold that chalkboard in his mind and refer to calculations, measurements or notes he’s mentally written out throughout the process of building or overseeing the production of a week’s worth of furniture in his design studio. The second is that he has an uncanny charm with the ability to tap into a person’s demeanor and harmonize with them conversationally. He catches a vibe and surfs on it and he’s terrific at absorbing and reflecting emotion. The third is that he says aloud the emotionally honest things that most of us only think. For example, at the end of this interview, he looked up and smiled and said, disarmingly, “I hope you liked me.” Graeber, a self-described “troublesome kid,” now knows that he has a high-functioning form of Asperger syndrome, a bold contributor to his superpowersas an adult, but as a youngster he found himself getting kicked out of classes. At one point his choices had dwindled to two: PE or woodshop. “I chose woodshop. I’d been drawing since I was eight years old, and I took to woodworking like a duck to water,” he says. That shop class was the gateway to Graeber’s creative unfurling. He began watching “The New Yankee Workshop” and reading woodworking magazines. He built some drum risers—playing music has also long been a part of Graeber’s creative repertoire, and he played in bands for decades. Then, it happened. “My first project. Someone asked me to build some pedestals for their home. My second project was building an entry table.” But that’s not all that was going on at that particular moment. As his love for furniture design grew, so did the success of his other venture. He and a friend had opened Oklahoma’s first professional body piercing shop in 1992. By 1996, it was doing well enough that Graeber was able to open a small furniture boutique as well, which solidified his growing suspicion: he was born to be a furniture designer and woodworker. In 1999, he

LUXI E R E 39

sold his piercing business and never looked back. His north Edmond studio, Graeber Design, is sprinkled with sawdust and filled with furniture in various stages of construction, a sort of highstyle version of Santa’s workshop. There are lots of table bases, chair legs, pieces of raw lumber and power tools and the air is filled with music and shared laughter among Graeber’s team of designers and builders. It’s a harmonious group, an ad hoc family of craftsmen who build beautiful furniture together and sit down for lunch as a group each day. It’s cheerful. Flexible. Except for the music. “I’m the dictator of music. It changes every day: folk, metal, Sinatra, Prince, Johnny Cash…” he says. For the first 14 years of Graeber Design, he built a lot of cabinets. “I was about 75 percent cabinets and 25 percent furniture,” he says. He was also enjoying a steady flow of historical renovation work from around the country and traveling hither and thither to meet those demands. In 2013, he did something he still doesn’t quite understand: “I moved to Hawaii for no real reason.” He’d been there on vacation and the islands just got in his head. “I was at La Perouse Bay, and something rare happened. I couldn’t see or hear another sign of life. I sat and listened to the rocks and coral and waves,” he says. He was drawn to go back. “Everything became about Hawaii after that,” he says. He’d turn on the television and the show “House Hunters” would be in Hawaii. Flip to the Cooking Channel and it’s Hawaiian food. That sort of thing. So away he went. Aloha Oklahoma, Aloha Hawaii. But after a bit, island life felt too repetitive. “I’m glad I went but, when you live on an island, before long you’ve done everything. There was one movie theater on Maui. The putt-putt golf shut down.” It was a life of eat, surf, hike, repeat. Which - make no mistake - was lovely and Graeber doesn’t take for granted that he was able to do it. Two years later, he was back in Oklahoma, initially to care for his father, but at that point he knew it was probably to stay. “When I moved back in 2015, the market was ready.” The handmade, local movement was in full swing, and Graeber had honed his hand-finishing skills during his Hawaiian sabbatical. Today, Graeber Design crafts 200-250 custom pieces of furniture each year. Every piece is handmade, which means every single piece is unique. Bespoke. Many Graeber pieces are rendered in white oak or walnut. “I love white oak because of its density and because it handles Oklahoma’s humidity beautifully,” he says. “And walnut is just gorgeous.” Tables are by far his most prolific creations. All of his table base designs are based on a curved feature he calls an eyelash. Beyond that, they’re as different as can be. Beautifully ornate and timeless, traditional, super clean, elegant and modern or something else altogether. “The So-

phia base is the most popular,” he says. Graeber Design will celebrate 25 years in business in June, and there will be a huge celebration, including 25 days of Instagram giveaways. “We’ll give away everything, from T-shirts and coasters to dining tables,” he says, gleefully. All of his stock table bases are named for his pets. And all of his pets have been named after actresses. So there’s Sophia, Vivien, Ava, Lillian, Greta, Marlene, Tippi and Audrey. Sophia, the best-seller, is a smooth beauty with a solid base, and a choice of tabletops including round, oval or pill. All of his standard designs are highly customizable, offered in a variety of woods, finishes and sizes. He also makes chairs, beds, nightstands and side or coffee tables. Non-standard designs are limited only by his clients’ imaginations and the laws of physics, although even these are regularly bent. Demand is high and some custom orders are waitlisted and have been for years. William Graeber has clearly hit his stride. His life is sweet, his furniture is beautiful, and within his mind is his own brand of magic.

GRAEBER DESIGN takes great pride in making beautiful, functional furniture. Each piece is handcrafted in Edmond, Oklahoma, out of the best locally sourced and sustainable materials possible, and every piece we make is guaranteed to last a lifetime.

SPRING INTO HOME TRENDS WITH

HENRY HOME INTERIORS They are the culmination of four generations of furniture connoisseurs and interior designers. Their unique sense of style is grounded in sophistication for those with acquired tastes. BY KIANA MORIDI

How did you begin your career in interior design? What interested you in the industry? I grew up in the furniture world. My father ran a furniture store for 40 years that was originally opened by my grandparents. I was very fortunate to attend markets from a young age. On vacations growing up, we would make time to stop by furniture factories, art galleries, and stores wherever we were visiting. In June 2018, I left my job as a designer and head buyer to start Henry Home Interiors, which was opened in November 2018. What are some interior trends you’re seeing for spring/summer? The past four years, people have wanted gray, gray, and more gray. Finally, we are seeing less gray as people want to add softer, warmer neutrals layered with color! Blues, greens, pink, and reds are starting to come back, as well as darker, moodier tones. How would you describe the style of Henry Home Interiors? I think of Henry Home Interiors as having a very fresh, current style. We have looks ranging from updated traditional to contemporary. HHI is an exciting collection of fresh and updated transitional furniture with unique accents. People are always complimenting our unique offerings of art, rugs and lighting. We are not afraid of color or to make bold choices with our design. Our motto is “furniture and design for sophisticated living,” and we offer just that – lots

house is not a home until it’s decorated with your personality in mind. Well, maybe that’s not exactly how the saying goes, but Katelynn Henry of Henry Home Interiors may beg to differ. As spring and summer begin to approach, home décor and interior trends of vibrant pops of color and light begin to reflect the warmer months ahead. To learn more about interior design trends and designing a home with individuality in mind, we chat with Henry about the best way to make a house a home, the staple design piece for every home, and the power of a good rug.

of looks and styles for a beautiful home, but also something livable and functional. What’s the best way to make a house a home? Some people say, “A house is a home because of the people who live in it,” and that’s so true. As a designer, I do not impose my style on my clients, but rather help guide them in defining their own. I want to incorporate the homeowner’s own personality into our designs—your home tells your story about how you live. If you could name one staple design piece for any home, what would it be? Updated lighting! Lighting can really date a house even if you have new furniture. Swap ceiling fans for light fixtures – they will really brighten up your space. Also, invest in a good quality sofa. It usually gets a lot of use, so a lesser quality piece will not hold up well for very long. What do you recommend to someone who is thinking about redesigning their home? This past year, COVID has made everyone reexamine their homes and the way they live. At first, working with a designer is a little like dating. I ask questions to get to know my client and the way they really live, what they want to change about the space, etc. Inspiration images and photos are great. I also love walking through my store with clients to see what styles and designs jump out to them. I have 6000 square feet of options and lots of things for them to sit on, in addition to thousands of fabrics to choose from. The options are limitless! Fill in the blank. A design is not complete without _____. The right rug! Changing the rug in your space can completely change the look and feel of your room. What does the future hold for Henry Home Interiors? At least once a week, someone asks us where we are based out of, where our other stores are located, or if we will open a store in their area. Being a business owner, this is a huge compliment. Originally, I had never thought past our one store in Norman, but you never know what the future might hold!

HIDE ART:

THE BESPOKE WORLD OF KYLE BUNTING With a mantra of, “any size, any shape, any color,” the designer approaches rug design as a blank canvas, ready to bring his clients’ visions to life. INTERVIEW BY VALENTINA GUTIERRÉZ

M

eet Kyle Bunting—an innovative rug designer beautifully redefining how hide is used for interior applications. From vibrantly bold to subtly chic, Kyle incorporates elegant Italian hide into decorative pieces of art with an added bonus of comfort. Based in Austin, Texas, Kyle is constantly creating new pieces with his team of contributing designers. With a mantra of, “any size, any shape, any color,” the designer approaches rug design as a blank canvas, ready to bring his clients’ visions to life. Here, we chat with Kyle about his biggest inspiration, his favorite installation, and what a day in the life of a rug designer really looks like. Tell us how you got started and why you chose to work with hides. The business is 20 years old this year. I got into the design business after being in television and media for many years. When I bought my first place and hired an interior designer, I became enamored with the design business. To me, it was dimensional creativity, and it reminded me of the television business because it was very dynamic. You have interesting, creative people dealing with psychology, logistics, colors, and palettes. It’s a unique category of art. I knew I wanted to be in the business and do something special. One night I woke up in the middle of the night and remembered that, in Texas in the late ’70s, my dad had bought many hides, and he would cut

44 LUXI E R E

them into pieces and make them into tabletops and art pieces. One time a customer came in and said, “This is very beautiful, what you do, but is there any way you can make a rug for me?” So my dad figured out a way to make two rugs for his client, but he never made more. In fact, he never made any rugs again until August of 2001, when I, then living in San Francisco, remembered his rugs. So that is where the idea came about. “What if we do custom decorative carpets for designers that are very chic, high-end, couture, and highly artistic and sell them to designers and architects, but we make them out of hide?” I saw the potential at that moment, but nobody else saw it. Even my dad thought, “That’s a great idea! Maybe you will make one or two per month in the garage,” but I told him, “I have a bigger idea.”

We consider your rugs magnificent works of art. From concept to creation, walk us through the design process. We create beautiful decorative carpets that just happen to be made in hide. Our company works with interior designers and clients to bring their ideas to life. We help designers be successful for their clients, and we collaboratively create something beautiful. The designer understands the space and the client’s needs, and our job is to fit those needs. Designing is altogether a process that happens based on the relationship with the designer and bringing our ideas to improve the design. Once the size, color and patters are defined, a wildly complicated yet simple process begins. We use a drawing of the final design to determine what colors are going to be used, how they will be cut, and where the will be placed. Each piece is

HOME + DESIGN

then numbered. Then it is a matter of searching our inventory to find materials that match the size and hues of the pieces and looking through what is left over from previous jobs in a way that is not only creative but is sustainable in that we are using our materials efficiently. Once the pieces of hides are selected and numbered according to their location on the design, we have the rug assembled according to the design template. There is a lot of organizational structure behind making a rug. We pay special attention to grain, quality and hair direction during assembly of the pieces to create some movement and dynamism. Finally, we cut the edges meticulously and paint them. We then photograph the pieces for marketing and archiving purposes. Depending on the size, the scale and the complexity of the project, the process can take a couple of days or, for complicated designs, two months. What are the advantages of hides versus other materials? Hide is just the material that we happen to use to make our work very interesting and beautiful. We double and triple saturate the dyes so that the colors are vibrant. We also use Italian hide, which is the highest quality you can find. An advantage of hide is that it has a tactile, interesting way of playing with light that is exciting to look at. It is also very durable. It is soft on your feet, yet stains are very easy to manage. Have you expanded your product lines? We are predominantly a decorative carpet for residential interiors; residential is 80% of our business. The rest is boutique commercial work like offices, restaurants, bars and hotels. Most of our commercial business is vertical—wall coverings, art pieces and murals. We also sell our hides to designers for upholstery for chairs, benches and other furniture items. What is your most popular rug? All cream carpet - monochromatic white hides. They are what we have done most of since I started doing rugs, and it is still probably 20% of the business. What is interesting about them is that the aesthetic is very compelling and attractive. Hide is the only thing you can use that gives you that pale creamy aesthetic without having to clean all the time. If you did a white rug in wool, everything would show. Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration has been my father Jim Bunting, who passed away in December of last year. My father created this idea and nurtured it into a small little thing, but he had a completely different line of work. But when I asked him, “I have this idea, would you mind if I ran with it?” he said “I would be thrilled, but I am only going to ask you for one thing…I am going to ask that you give it everything you have and never give up.” To have been raised with an entrepreneurial background, where my dad told me that I could do anything that I wanted if I put my mind into it, was very inspiring to me. His entrepreneurial ex-

EVERY SUCCESS STORY HAS a beginning, a humble spark of vision that sets aflame creativity and imagination.

perience was incredibly important, and his love, encouragement and support through anything I wanted to do are what led me to where I am today. I remember the time when I told him, “My pink, purple and orange rug is on the cover of Architectural Digest in Tommy Hilfiger’s living room! He shook his head and said, “I did not see what you saw, but this is unbelievable. Look what you have created!” Tell us about your favorite installation. We were hired by an interior designer in Los Angeles to create a custom hide rug that was going to be installed in Saudi Arabia in a private, women-only spa. The designer said “I want to work with you. But the rug needs to be there in two months and it needs to be very beautiful.” The rug was to be 950 square feet and laid into a concrete indentation that was half an inch deep and had already been poured. The designer emphasized that it had to fit perfectly into the space. It was proof of some of the critical demands of the business and of the complicated development processes in our work. The engineering of the project was very complex, it was a logistical issue to get it shipped because of the rug’s size, and there were time constraints - we only had a couple of months to pull it off. Internally, we had

46 LUXI E R E

to find a way in production to have the space to make something that big and be able to cut all the panels and move them all around as needed. It has been my favorite project because it showed that every part of the business and the people on our team could all work with the client and our partners to fulfill what was needed, and we managed to deliver it with flying colors. It was a turning point in many ways. Tell us about a typical day with Kyle Bunting. I wake up early, work out quickly every morning, eat light and fly out the door. If I am not at the office and with my team by 8 a.m., I am not in Kyle’s happy place. How does it feel like to walk on a Kyle Bunting rug? My friend Cindy Allen, who is the editor of Interior Design Magazine, said it best, “It gives you happy feet.” I think I could not have said it better myself. How did you meet Jennifer Welch? And how do you believe your styles align? In my business, it is our responsibility to introduce ourselves to talented interior designers like Jennifer Welch and inspire them with what we can do so that we can develop a relationship and collaborate as much as possible. Jennifer discovered our line and started using our product, so I reached out and wanted to get to know her, and we just hit it off right away.

I believe our styles are similar in a way that we have a very diversified and eclectic approach to design. She is one of the best. Our personalities really connected and we formed a very special relationship. I believe we both saw how to make things and manage the business and assist one another; we also see things very similarly. We have an alignment of communality. Also, our diabolical sense of humor probably helps! What does the future look like for Kyle Bunting? What we do is very special. We are in the luxury business but our product is also very artistic. It is also very comforting and useful in that there is a practically to it. It’s luxurious, it’s purposeful and it’s artistic. We are just getting started telling the world what we can do, and I can’t wait to see what we do in the next 20 years. What is your LUXIERE? Luxiere to me is being genuinely, wholeheartedly loved and cared for. Tell me what feels better than that?

here may be a reason you’ve never seen Jennifer Welch and comedian Larry David in the same room. Kidding. Sort of. If they’re not actually the same person, the uncomfortably funny curmudgeon is, at the very least, her spirit animal. For one thing, Welch is really smart and hilarious. Like belly-laugh hilarious and Mensa smart. For another, at the end of the day, she really just wants to be left alone. She wants to get up really early, work really hard and then go home.

48 LUXI E R E

Perhaps that’s why she’s been pretty sanguine throughout the year-plus of quarantine, other than during her bad, long-haul bout with COVID-19. “Honestly it’s mostly been good for me. I don’t miss socializing. I find that the older I get, the fewer people I need in my life,” she says. “I don’t have to lie anymore. My kids are too big now to use as an excuse not to go places. I talk all day long at work, and when I come home, I’m all talked out.” She (sort of) jokingly says she suffers from FOMB (fear of missing bedtime), not FOMO

(fear of missing out). “I shine in the mornings. I wake up before sunup and if I happen to be somewhere and it gets to be about 8:45 pm, I get anxious. I need to be home. For me, about eight hours of sleep is ideal. I don’t drink alcohol and I don’t smoke. My life is very scheduled, like a toddler,” she says, laughing. Welch, like many high-level creatives, is paradoxical. She’s a bold-thinking extrovert who likes her solitude and prefers to be in her pajamas by 7:45 or 8:00. She’s an avid global traveler with a designer wardrobe that will blow your mind, but she also loves athleisure and tennis shoes and has honed her non-travel life down to only what’s crucial to her: family, business, fitness and pets. Mostly one dog. Tubby is Welch’s soulmate. “Tubby was originally a gift for my son Roman,” she says, but fickle fate intervened, and Welch fell in love with the French Bulldog. Her older son Dylan is leaving for college in the fall, and, like for most parents, the transition is bittersweet for Welch. He’s going to Syracuse to study journalism, and she’s extremely proud but also a little misty about his childhood being all but over. Younger son Roman saw a chink in her armor and wisely seized the moment, making his move. “My child has been rather irritated with me for about five years that I stole his dog, and he has a valid point… so Roman caught me at a weak moment, and he’s like, Dylan’s leaving and I’m going to be so lonely and you’ve got to get this dog for me.” Enter Cha-Cha Welch, French Bulldog and newest member of the family. “I used to not say it, I was like ‘I don’t have a favorite dog,’ but Tubby’s my favorite dog. And he’s actually my favorite creature that I live with. I love my children, but they are moody. Sometimes they are assholes. But Tubby is consistently happy to see me -- if I’m gone an hour or if I’m gone a week. Children are distant, conditional, depending on their mood or if they’ve eaten,” she says, laughing, “So now I’ve completely come out of the closet about it and said Tubby is my favorite creature on the planet, but my kids are 14 and 18 and they’re like ‘fair enough.’” You may know the now-famous Tubby from

his starring role in the 2017 hit Bravo reality series “Sweet Home Oklahoma,” which followed Welch and her cadre of sophisticated yet wackadoo friends, family and colleagues through their daily adventures. In addition to Cha-Cha, the Welch menagerie also includes a Pomeranian named Spike and a cat, Kitsky, who’s remarkably high-maintenance. “Kitsky has asthma and diabetes, so we use an inhaler, and I give her two shots a day.” If there was ever a question that these are truly miraculous times, the cat inhaler is all the evidence needed. Aside from being a walking “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode, Welch is also a divinely talented designer, whose work takes her all over the nation, from Rye, New Hampshire, to Houston to Des Moines, albeit these days often by Zoom. “Rye is a little beach town on the East Coast. Our

projects are all over the United States, and you know, there are these pockets of sophistication all over the country, kind of like in Oklahoma City.” She’s got about 20 projects on deck at the moment and has just collaborated on a line of fabrics for the indoor-outdoor textile company, Link Outdoor. “Prior to COVID-19 hitting, Link Outdoor asked me to collaborate with them on a fabric line, so I worked with their design team and we created a fabric line, and I’m just really excited about it because, as an interior designer, you have clients who want nice things but they want to be able to enjoy them. So if you buy a really expensive sofa but you’re scared to have a cup of coffee on it or drink a glass of wine on it, you’ve spent all this money for something you just feel like you can’t enjoy,” she says. The fabrics from

Link Outdoor are soft, lush and fabulous and her collection is based around textiles she loves: Ikat fabrics from Turkey and Uzbekistan. Another big, super-empowering event in the past year: Welch bought a building, a headquarters for her empire. “Jennifer Welch Design had been a renter for all of my interior design career, and in early summer I bought a building for my firm. It felt really great. I bought it. I didn’t have to ask my dad, I didn’t have to ask a husband, I bought it. It’s a really beautiful space with all this natural light. I love it. The greatest thing about my career is having the freedom to completely live your life the way you want to.” That world, the world Welch has created for herself, means dogs are sleeping under her desk and a framed photo of Larry David is sitting on top of it.

SUGAR HILL:

$5.9 MILLION REASONS TO LOVE THE PALM HOME Jim and Terri Palm spared no effort in constructing a lavish dream home for their family, and the results are simply magnificent. BY CHRISTINE EDDINGTON

F

rom the vantage point of Jim and Terri Palm’s immense, secluded compound in the rarefied enclave of Sugar Hill, every single thing is beautiful. The rolling landscape outside of Arcadia could almost double as the couple’s beloved Colorado, which for them is as much a feeling as a place. Sugar Hill itself is intentionally private, under-the-radar and frankly out of reach for all but a very few. It’s as if the property reached out and found the Palms in a serendipitous turn of events. Jim was driving through the Oklahoma countryside, looking for the right place for their family home. It had to be private. There had to be room to create the large-scale, resort-like family home that would house the entire Palm brood, children and grandchildren, pets, all of it, with space for every amenity anyone could ever think of. It would be the site of so many family celebrations: birthday parties, family reunions, weddings and social events of all kinds. The vision was impeccable: transplant a luxuriously rustic Colorado resort with manicured grounds and five-star interior spaces. A phrase comes to mind: all who wander are not lost. Jim, while wandering, happened upon Sugar Hill, and his family’s future was found. Only three homes had been constructed at that point. The gate to the hidden development was open, and Jim knew what he’d found: Mature oak trees, natural springs and waterfalls, rock formations and far-reaching views of tree-tops nearby Lake Arcadia.

“When we thought about building, we knew we wanted a modern and versatile mountain home,” Jim says. “We wanted it to feel like a resort for our family, and to be large enough that we could have everyone there together.” The wine cellar and sub-ground level was inspired by a weekend hangout: Jim had spent time with legendary oilman T. Boone Pickens at one of the man’s ranches in the Texas panhandle. The lowest level of the Pickens property looked and felt like a naturally occurring grotto or cave but was manmade and composed of Lueders limestone rubble. “I asked if he’d mind if I used the same type of material in our home,” Jim shared, and with permission granted, the Palm wine cellar got the Pickens treatment. What Terri Palm loves most about her home is that builder Jeff Gibbs and designer Lisa Cazes have created a unique experience and feel for each space in the 12,020 square feet of manse. The primary suite is quietly glamorous with a see-through fireplace, garden room, movie-star closets, heated floors and spa-like bath amenities including a resplendent steam shower. Perhaps the coup de grace is the THX certified theater room and entertainment suite. There’s the 119” Screen Innovations Gamma Maestro screen, JVC 4K shift projector, stateof-the-art surround sound amplifiers and speakers, remote-controlled climate, lights, movies, shades and music, custom acoustic paneling, 10 leather auto-recliners, a granite bar with seating for eight, concession room with

theater-style popcorn machine and always-stocked customized candy display drawers, a two- pony keg refrigerator and sliding glass doors opening to an adjacent covered patio. The spec list of technology in this portion of the home alone is a perfectionist’s dream, and Jim spared no expense. In fact, no expense was spared anywhere in the home. The amenities dreamed up by the homeowners and their team is summarized in four pages, but the true scope and scale can only be realized in person. There’s a dog room with auto-filler water bowls, granite countertops, a commercial grade bathing facility, KitchenAid dual drawer refrigerators and its own yard. A main suite with six guest suites with full baths, plus an office, plus a garden room. The home’s immense footprint can seem daunting on paper, but the flow, spatial orientation and elegant proportions are such that the home feels warm and cozy. It’s perfect. The outdoor living spaces were created with equally meticulous attention to detail and can be enjoyed 300+ days a year. The main patio can be sheltered from sun or wind with its four motorized screens. Radiant floor heating makes it cozy when temperatures fall, and four oscillating fans add a breeze when one is needed. The outdoor kitchen includes a granite countertop island with seating, a six-burner Wolf grill, KitchenAid icemaker, GE Monogram minifridge, a natural gas fireplace and a 65” Sony Brava television. Two more patios are equally well-appointed. The pool and cabana areas of the home could easily be mistaken for a posh resort. Two breathtaking chandeliers anchor the cabana’s main living space. The cabana perfectly complements the infinity pool and grotto, hot tub and fire features, one a glass-filled bowl and the other a granite boulder. Six patios are ready for events, and the home and cabana can be combined or used independently, as can the expansive open area surrounded by oak trees. One might easily wander the palatial home and grounds for days, never seeing the same detail twice. There is beauty at every turn and brilliant touches throughout. It’s a masterful home and, for Jim and Terri, it’s also a love letter to their sweet family, who are the inspiration behind it all.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous of these is the Bryce Amphitheater, which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos.

SOUTHERN UTAH

A FANCIFUL LANDSCAPE CARVED BY WIND AND WATER The breathtaking red rock landscape of southwestern Utah is a perfect getaway for those times when you need some deep rest and rejuvenation. BY OLIVIA HANSON

64 LUXI E R E

n March of 2020, I, my dog Juneau, and my travel trailer were all set to camp in southern Utah, but we all know what happened last spring. Utah closed all parks and public campgrounds, dashing my hopes of seeing Utah’s magnificent landscape. Once Utah camping reopened, a friend convinced me to go in spite of the pandemic, so in late October, off I went, hoping that being outdoors would protect me from inhaling the dreaded virus. I did not get the virus, but I did get the bug to see more of our national parks. Utah has five! Only California and Alaska have more, but Utah is a clear winner in parks per square mile. In just 450 miles of driving you can see five national parks, two national forests, two national monuments, a national recreation area, several U. S. conservation areas, and quite a few state parks, each with surprisingly different scenery. The warm red, peach and coral sandstone has been carved by water and wind into magical sculptures among buttes and canyons; the intense dessert sun and clear air create a sky blue like no other. A trek across the flat plains of Oklahoma and the southern mountains of eastern Colorado brought us to Moab, Utah, just outside Arches National Park. The drive through the park is spectacular, with numerous scenic pull-offs. Sandstone arches, spires, and hoodoos rise against a sky so blue and bright that it seems to vibrate over the warm rusty reds and ochres of the snow-capped La Sal Mountains, visible even 30 miles away. I hiked through Park Avenue Trail, alongside its enormous vertical walls of red sandstone resembling rows of skyscrapers. Another short hike over a flat valley led to Sandstone Arch, a huge formation rising from the plain. Entered through a short, narrow canyon, the rocks open to a cool, peaceful, room with a floor of soft sand and an enormous arch above. There, two fathers were minding their toddlers while the older children sat in the sand doing homework on electronic workbooks. What a way to go to school! Cut by the Green and the Colorado River, deep, meandering canyons join in Canyonlands National Park to form even more colossal gorges. The scenic drive along White Rim Road in Canyonlands was breathtaking, with views of magnificent canyons and cliffs. Green, shady riverbanks deep in the canyons relieve the austerity of the high desert and support most of the desert creatures, including a few humans. The Colorado River collects the water of several more streams as it flows out Canyonlands, through Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, into Lake Powell, and on to Arizona and the Grand Canyon. Just north of Glen Canyon lies Capitol Reef National Park, with even more types of sandstone formations. The ancient reef juts out of the wide valley in huge cake-like structures

ZION CANYON NATIONAL PARK Follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present day adventures.

CAPITAL REEF NATIONAL PARK Discover the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic wrinkle on earth! Capital Reef is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes, and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles.

displaying distinct layers of colors and textures formed by the mud, sand, and debris of ancient seacoasts. Some areas of the buttes weather so that rocks roll onto the plain in whimsical arrays along the sandstone towers. We saw petroglyphs of an ancient pueblo culture along the Fremont River. In the heart of the park is the Fruita Historic District, a town settled by early Mormons who established homes and orchards in the fertile river valley. It now houses the park’s rangers and other staff as well as a restaurant. We bought lunch and ate on the lawn of nearby early military barracks, with antelope grazing nearby and magpies chattering at the adjacent table.

A drive around the southern edge of Zion National Park and through its 1930s-era tunnel leads to a unique desert terrain – odd swirls and slopes of peach, yellow and cream – and then on to Dixie National Forest brought us to cold temperatures and a completely different terrain, still sandstone, but with much more vegetation. At the top lay Bryce Canyon National Park, a fairyland of vertical pink cliffs, orange and red sandstone spires, hoodoos, and towers, with a backdrop of evergreen forest. As I climbed the steep trail, the temperature dropped even more, and banks of fog started drifting into the canyon below. At the highest lookout point,

snow started falling, and by the time I returned to the trail entrance, I could barely see anything in the canyon. We decided to take a mountain shortcut to Saint George, not realizing that the snowfall would continue until we descended to lower elevations. Visibility became minimal. Fortunately, other people being more sensible, few vehicles were on the road, and winds kept the road clear. We safely descended into the warmth of the desert and on to St. George. Zion Canyon, the prize of Zion National Park, limits the number of visitors, and you must sign in each morning to get a place in line. Zion Canyon, created by the Virgin River, is incredibly

LAKE POWELL Encompassing over 1.25 million acres, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based and backcountry recreation. beautiful and well worth the effort. A tram took us to the base of the 1000-foot canyon, where a trail follows the river and ends as water emerges under a huge rock at the base of the canyon. Maskcovered hikers became quiet as they progressed up the trail, awed by the natural beauty of the clear aqua-tinted water, the grottos and cliffs on either side, and the towering cliffs above. Trees clung to the cliffs and shades of green dominated the landscape. Along the always-shaded areas, trickling water formed icicles on the canyon walls. As I eventually emerged from the canyon into the bright desert, I already missed the serenity of the hidden canyon. A short drive from the striking scenery of St. George to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area took us to the Utah-Arizona border for a last view of the Colorado River as it exits Lake Powell in Arizona and flows toward the Pacific Ocean. The lake stretches far into Utah, but it has never been at full capacity and is slowly shrinking as snowfall across its watershed decreases. The lake’s peculiar cobalt blue water is in stark contrast to the arid, colorless landscape. On the other side of the dam, the mighty Colorado continues its meandering a thousand feet below, creating the

iconic Horseshoe Bend. The view from the main lookout above is one of the United States’ most memorable sights. Restrictions on travel have decreased the number of visitors to the national parks, so the crowds were few. It’s my experience that people who visit national parks are generally respectful of the land and each other. Most people were wearing masks on trails and lookouts, and they easily strike up conversations and offer help to others. It’s as if they are excited and proud to be part-owners (a very small part!) of such beautiful lands. As Teddy Roosevelt said when he formed the National Park System from the lands that American nature lovers had helped save, “The fundamental idea behind the parks…is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.” When I looked up at the incredible and magical scenery of Utah, I was struck with gratitude that a few people worked to help “We the People” become stewards of the beauty of our national parks.
