INSPIRATIONALLY “As women, we often discount ourselves. This has to stop.”

By Marie Neale
arika Agarwala is a woman who, at first glance, seems a little on the delicate side. Almost fragile. She’s beautiful, fine-boned and preternaturally poised. But it’s a trompe lóeil. She is a formidable strategist, a fierce negotiator and a firm believer in the power and strength that women bring to the table in business and in life. She plies her trade for a local corporate leader in oil and gas. Her title is Vice President, Marketing/Midstream, and as she speaks about her passion for civic service, it’s clear that more than one app is running in her mind, at all times.
Sarika Agarwala Vice President, Marketing/Midstream, Oil and Gas Industry
Agarwala’s specific areas of focus as a volunteer are women’s development and health care. She also loves the performing arts. Her board service is focused in those areas and includes the St. Anthony Foundation, ReMerge and Lyric Theater. She meditates most mornings, to start busy days on the right note, and she’s a full-throttle, diehard OSU fan, having earned a master’s degree there. She even returned early from her family Thanksgiving trip to attend the OUOSU game. PHOTO BY SHEVAUN WILLIAMS
Her work with the St. Anthony Foundation came from a very personal experience with a health crisis. “My middle sister went through some difficult medical issues. She’s a dietician and lives in India. When I was at the hospital with her, I saw too many people with no family members there with them offering emotional support.” She realized that part of the reason her sister was able to ultimately overcome her health issues was that she had her family with her every step of the way. Now she wants to help ensure that others have the same level of support during a health challenge.
“ReMerge helps get women out of the hole many find themselves in when they have no housing or transportation,” Agarwala said. “Once they have those, they need jobs, and not just jobs but careers. To do that, they must regain their self-confidence and sense of self-worth. I see this among women in the corporate world. When I mentor women, I tell them they cannot be shy in asking questions or taking on projects.”
Agarwala focuses her civic involvement to ensure that she can make the most impact. Her mother, a social worker and a bold, strong woman, sets a wonderful example, which her daughter draws from. “My mother is very down to earth and she has a real knack for connecting the dots and putting the pieces together to make things happen.” Rounding out the strong women of the Agarwala family is Sarika’s older sister, who has completed her post doctoral in human genome and is currently working at National Institute of Health, in Washington, DC.
She sees women in the corporate world as an asset, and champions them, pushing her mentees to be bold. “As women, we often discount ourselves. This has to stop. We need to embrace all opportunities. If you don’t know how to do something which is a part of a project you have the opportunity to undertake, learn! A good mentor should push you to do things outside of your comfort zone. My mentors have made me fearless. I want to do that for others.”

E MANOIR AUX QUAT SAISONS - better known to English speakers as the House of Four Seasons - is an elegant 17,000 square foot re-creation of a 17th century French chateau.
Every room of the giant chateau is designed to impress, starting with the one ton chandelier in the entryway, reportedly repurposed from a hotel in France. Marble and white oak floors compliment the other unbelievable quality and finishes located throughout the expansive estate. Just beyond the entry is the "grand room," which at 1,470 square feet is bigger than many houses. Two more chandeliers hang there among various oil paintings permanently embedded on the walls. The master bedroom is loaded with luxury touches, including a working fireplace - one of nine in the house - ornate designs in the plaster ceiling and a carpet by Edward Fields, the company that provides carpeting for the White House. A side door leads to the spa, which includes a whirlpool and a "habitat," which can act as a sauna or replicate the atmosphere of any climate in the world, such as a tropical rain forest. That's just the start of the over the top amenites located in the west wing. The bathroom on the masculine side is decked out in dark polished marble, while the feminine side has a bathroom with ample drapery, gold faucets in the shape of swans, five closets even a refrigerated closet designed specifically for fur coats. The remainder of the west wing includes a large library with even more oil paintings on the ceiling, an enclosed patio with ample greenery and a high ceiling with a pickled wood finish and a combination study, office and breakfast bar. Even the small powder room, like most rooms in the house, also has a small chandelier. The other bedrooms in the house are almost equally as grand, as they are each laid out as spacious suites with their own private closets and bathrooms. Each has a unique design, as does every other room The eastern side of the house features a trophy room complete with a bar for entertaining guests, a kitchen area with a large bar and a restaurant-style booth for a breakfast area, and a large club room that bends off from the main house at a 30-degree angle, accompanied by a grid of lumber beams as a ceiling accent. The chateau features more luxury touches than a person can count the bar sports silkscreened brass, the bedrooms have folded silk drapes on the ceiling, and the walls of the solarium have more than 20 coats of finish on them. Gold plating is the norm on finishings, even on the door hinges. The planning and construction of the chateau began in the late 1980s, though due to the complexity of the design it took eight years to finish. And, technically, it still isn't finished, an additional 5,000 square feet in spaces on the second floor above the west wing and above every second-floor bedroom are still waiting to be shaped into living spaces. Located in Rockwood Hills Estates on Evanston Avenue in Tulsa, this completely custom and once in a lifetime estate is available for purchase at less than $4 million. Listed and offered by Laura Hawkins with McGraw Realtors, private showings are available. >

Located in downtown Oklahoma City, the shop sits in the regentrified Automobile Alley district. Scott and Ben opened Urbane on Sept. 8, 2012, about two years after they met and started dating. Since then, the now-married couple has worked to build a lush, inviting atmosphere and an atypically sophisticated style their repeat customers now expect. “We hope customers leave thinking they found a unique place that carries items they love,” said Ben who is often behind the scenes dealing with accounting, payroll and marketing. Scott focuses on merchandising and customer relations, and quipped that he is the creative genius of the duo. “He’s the face of our brand . . . he likes to say,” Ben said dryly, amused smile in tow. As a previous industry representative for 15 years for several brands they carry, Scott is savvy about the markets and purchasing. The pair agrees the store is not trying to be something for everyone. “Once people embrace their own style, they get what we’re doing,” Scott said. For those doing holiday shopping this December, the store is stocked with distinctive giftable items such as candles, barware, scarves and posh candies, along with holiday décor, quirky stocking stuffers and serveware for entertaining. Dr. Chris Rispoli, a shopper who stopped in before Thanksgiving for his second visit to the store, said Urbane has merchandise that other stores simply don’t have. “It’s all about being original, being different,” Rispoli said. “Plus everyone is extremely friendly. Helpful, but not hovering.” He left with several large packages, which Scott helped him carry to his car. “We try to make it feel like they are coming into our home. We hope they will linger, become our friends,” Ben said. In our opinion, they have accomplished all of the above

FTER YOU SPEND YEARS INVESTING your earnings in assets that you will use for retirement income, you may feel the hard part is over. Unfortunately, planning a retirement income cash flow is trickier than building assets. You need to start planning no less than 10 years before retirement in order to make sure that you don’t get off on the wrong foot. There are many obstacles to face when converting your savings into a lifetime income stream. You may be faced with challenges such as sequence of investment returns, inflation, difficulty converting assets to cash, reductions in promised benefits from pensions or social security, living longer than your money will last, unexpected expenses such as costly health conditions, and bond issuer defaults, to name a few. The impact of the unexpected can have a devastating impact on your portfolio. Take, for example, sequence of investment returns. Let’s compare two hypothetical $300,000 portfolios that experience the same annual returns, just in a different sequential order:
As you can see, portfolio B completely ran out of money in year 17, while portfolio A grew well above its original value. To PROMOTED CONTENT
reduce the effect that sequence of returns will have on your portfolio, you need to diversify your sources of income. One option is to utilize several different investments. For example, rather than holding one diversified mutual fund, you might hold several different funds that have very different investment strategies. That way, you can choose the best performing fund from which to make your withdrawals. You might also invest in income producing assets to reduce the need to liquidate investments. That will reduce the amount you have to sell when the market is down. Some investors can further diversify their sources of income by purchasing an annuity from an insurance company that guarantees a minimum annual income payment for life. Annuities can be very expensive and often do not have much potential to get equity-like returns, but they are not actually an investment. They are really an insurance policy giving you some guarantee of lifetime income. The guarantee comes with some risk (the insurer may not be able to hold their end of the bargain), but that risk is relatively low. Making sure that you have guaranteed lifetime sources of income to cover your basic necessities might enable you to avoid taking withdrawals from your other investments when their values are down. Some investors consider these guaranteed income benefits a reasonable replacement for their lowest risk investments. While sequence of returns is a big risk in retirement, inflation may be harder to prepare for. Most pensions and social security offer a “cost of living adjustment”, often referred to as COLA. However, many pensions have been reducing or removing their COLA’s. As we all know, social security is under pressure and some have suggested reducing COLA’s as a way to reduce the cost of the program. The 2015 Social Security and Medicare Trustees Report indicated that the trust fund would completely run out of money in 2034 if no changes were made but that tax revenue could cover about 75% of benefits from 2034 to 2089. The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 made changes to the program that will affect these projections, but it is still likely that COLA reductions will come up for discussion again. (FYI – the
025-Cameron2.qxp 12/8/15 9:23 AM Page 1
The Retirement Income Obstacles Budget Act removed file and suspend claiming strategies that allowed families to get higher lifetime benefits.) For high income earners, social security will replace a smaller percentage of income than for low income earners. The maximum monthly benefit in 2016 is $2,639. Even if COLA’s remain intact for the program, people who earned higher pre-retirement income are getting that COLA on a smaller percentage of their preretirement income than others. This means, they will have more pressure to find other sources of inflation protection to avoid a decreasing standard of living. Equity investments have historically experienced long term returns that outpaced inflation, so can be considered an inflation hedge. However, equity investments can react negatively to surprise inflation in the short term and are risky and volatile. They may not be suitable for all investors. Some other inflation hedges (which carry their own risks) are commodities, gold, real estate, and some foreign currencies. Floating rate loans and TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Securities) are two other options which have lower risk and might be suitable for more investors. Some people might be able to purchase inflation protection riders on products offered by insurance companies such as annuities and long term care insurance. A common obstacle that business owners and real estate investors have is the inability to convert assets to cash when needed. These situations need special attention to ensure that various options and their tax ramifications are properly analyzed. If you hold a significant portion of your net worth in illiquid assets, it is even more important that you begin planning for retirement early. In some cases, business succession planning will need to be done and may require agreements that need to be in place more than a decade before retirement. If you are house rich and cash poor, you may want to learn about reverse mortgages. In a reverse mortgage the bank pays you in installments and in return you give them ownership equity in
your home equivalent to the payments you receive plus interest and mortgage expenses. With a reverse mortgage the borrower gets to live in the house. These are not for everybody. They work best for people who plan on living in their home until death or at least for a very long time and who do not necessarily want to leave their home to their children. A reverse mortgage is usually more expensive than a home equity line of credit, so the two options should be compared. Some people prefer the reverse mortgage because they do not have to make any payments whereas payments must be made on a home equity line of credit. It is also important to know the terms of a reverse mortgage, especially whether or not they are non-recourse – which means that you or your estate can not owe more than the home is worth when the loan becomes due. Reverse mortgages backed by HUD offer some consumer protection, but are better for home values under $630,000. Homeowners with more expensive homes may prefer a proprietary reverse mortgage that offers higher loan amounts.
I
F YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE about these products, you can speak with a HUD approved reverse mortgage counselor at the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Oklahoma (www.ccsok.org) or you can come to our educational presentation on Thursday, January 14th from 6:30 to 7:30. Our guest speaker will be David Lee of Centennial Mortgage & Insurance. The presentation will be held at our office in our seminar room. Please RSVP to Amber at 405-463-7952. Obviously, there are many considerations involved in planning your retirement income stream. We highly recommend working with a Certified Financial Planner™ Professional to develop a long term plan and to make adjustments annually to deal with unexpected obstacles. Today’s planning software can quickly perform complicated calculations and help you plan for multiple scenarios. This offers you the opportunity to be prepared for many situations and to have realistic expectations of your retirement lifestyle.

and built by designers, engineers and craftspeople at Aston Martin’s Gaydon, England headquarters. Based on the V8 Vantage, the car’s chassis has a longer wheelbase at slightly over 105 inches and has a width of a little more than 83 inches with mirrors. Length is nearly 174 inches and height is a mere 49 7/32 inches.
At less than 5 months from first sketch to the initial body panels being produced, the DB10 was designed and surfaced in a remarkably short timescale. All 10 cars produced for SPECTRE were developed
All body panels are carbon fiber, which is exposed on the sills and diffuser. As few body panels as possible were used to > reduce the number of shut lines and maintain a pure, uninterrupted sculpture.

reduce the number of shut lines and maintain a pure, uninterrupted sculpture. Designed with one elegant shoulder line from front to back, the profile is a nod to the DB5. A body side crease called the “UFO line” runs around the car from front to rear and intersects with wheel arches giving the car its characteristic short overhangs and muscular feel. A shark inspired nose with the grill sitting in the shadow area beneath the main feature line hints at the cars stealthy character. Exterior paint took nearly four times longer to apply than regular paint. The finish provides a silky smooth liquid metal appearance that is super-reflective and shows off all the contours of the exterior form. The primary emphasis of the interior is a driver-focused cockpit that is functiondriven, tactical, essential, and dedicated to the task. Leather trimmed panels dress carbon fiber surfaces finished with contrast stitch welt detail. The environment lends a bold, muscular and powerful feel. Inspiration from military watches and high luxury timepieces were incorporated into the illumination of the instrumentation and switches. Each switch is a piece of precision detailing. All eight DB10s survived filming and all 10 will be used for promotional work around the world. The DB10 features a 4.7 litre V8 engine with a manual gearbox propelling the car to a top speed of 190 mph. Unfortunately the DB10 is not a production car but it does provide a glimpse into the future design direction of next generation Aston Martins. One important bright spot for those who might be inclined to own a DB10 is that one will be auctioned off for charity in 2016.
