In this regard, I can tell you that publishing each magazine issue is no different. The publication of last month’s issue was a blissful milestone that we memorialized in style. We were privileged to share our evening of celebration with the launch of the Bob Moore Maserati Women of Influence Campaign.
With each new issue, my goal will ever be to find and deliver the possibility of experiences that seem less obvious but that, if you partake of them, will enliven your life. More so, my ambition is to kindle your sense of adventure so that you might indulge in the bevy of experiences availed to Oklahomans and partake of the life Luxiere.
L
Sometimes, the first experiences stand out. First day of school. First job. First car. First love. Other times, cumulative experiences standout. Riding a bike. Graduation. Marriage. Giving birth. When an experience is positive, human nature is to repeat the exploits or reproduce the joy.
That gala was every bit of the springboard we wished it would be. That’s because with every experience, we also aim to learn new things and improve our offerings. In this issue, you will find an expanded range of Oklahoma experiences and an amplified measure of design scrutiny. Fine hair gives way to fine fashion, while fine homes and fine cars provide the means for exhibiting them both with delight.
K
If being an entrepreneur teaches a person anything, it is that life is full of experiences. Some good, some bad... mostly good, if we’re fortunate. A burgeoning appreciation for new experiences is part of the entrepreneurial adventure. This is especially true if the entrepreneur is a publisher (like yours truly) who happens to have just published the first issue of a new magazine.

HISTORIC LUXURY HERITAGE
fashion Edna Balliet founded Oklahoma City’s first luxury women’s store at the corner of Robinson and Park in downtown Oklahoma City in 1936, bringing the finest

first time. Seventy eight years later, Balliets, now

art
“Growing up,” says Oklahoma artist Dennis Johnson, “I always knew that creating art is what I was meant to do with my life.” He has spent his life honing his cra9 – learning new techniques, experimenting with various mediums and styles and creating a diverse body of work while investigating still life and landscape, Fauvism and Impressionism and more. Over the last 30+ years, that body of work has come full circle back to the style he loved the most 8om the beginning: richly colored abstract paintings.
Johnson began his art career in the early 70’s, selling paintings while attending East Texas State University. He was there to study printmaking, but one of his professors was creating airbrush work outside of class and it struck a chord in Johnson. Soon, he was spending all his 8ee time in the studio, talking with him, learning 8om him and being inspired. Upon his return to Oklahoma, he promptly purchased an airbrush, learned to use it and started creating wonderful airbrush figurative work. Throughout the 80’s, he came to combine figurative and abstract. As his career progressed, the figurative bled into brushwork and eventually disappeared into abstract creations.
010.qxp 9/22/15 1:47 PM Page 1
As an artist who has painted for over the last twenty-five years, I am continually looking to stretch my mind with new information and new points of view. My paintings are like inventions, and I love discovering new territory. I try to bring control, order and realism into my abstractions because I think those are things that no one expects to see in abstract paintings. I love to paint, and I think that says it all.”
- Dennis Johnson
Today, he calls his work “non-objective abstraction”, a visual structure that has never before been seen, but created out of elements that may be recognizable such as letters and mechanical and technical components. A primary focus of this style of painting is the mixing and blending of color. Color opens up depth, dimensions and emotions. But, it also requires control in order to harness its energy into a believable image. That is Johnson’s challenge and his joy as he strives to reach the limits of what a controlled, sophisticated abstraction can be. Dennis Johnson: A Retrospective will showcase a body of work created in the 80’s and 90’s as well as new works just created. From his early beginnings using only acrylics and throughout the years as he came to master oils and oil pastels, this retrospective is a visual journey of Johnson’s career. Dennis Johnson: A Retrospective will open at The Howell Gallery in Oklahoma City with an artist’s reception on Thursday, September 24th and run through October 17th. The Howell Gallery is located at 6432 N. Western Avenue in Oklahoma City. More information and images .om this show can be found at www.HowellGallery.com www.LUXIERE.com

Elegant architecture greeted me with the evidence and character of ďŹ ;y plus years of disrepair untouched by modern advertising.

010.qxp 9/22/15 1:50 PM Page 1
by Vanessa Rudloff Photography by Shevaun Williams A true devotee of Cuba, Ernest Hemingway once said, “All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.” I have fallen in love with Cuba. Only 90 miles :om Florida’s coast, the flight was about an hour :om boarding to baggage claim. So close. It was winter but still a beautiful 80 degrees on the largest of the Caribbean islands. Americans know so little :om experience about some of our nearest neighbors. It may be naïve to admit and even more so to have thought but I wondered if we would ever be welcome. I half expected a hard eye or rude gesture in my direction. Yet as I le; the small Havana airport, I was faced with a sea of hopeful, smiling faces. They never subsided. The warmth and hope of the Cuban people became the recurring theme to the entire trip and they had me at first sight. The love affair deepened with the view :om my window as we traveled to our hotel. Elegant architecture greeted me with the evidence and character of fi;y plus years of disrepair untouched by modern advertising. It gave the scene a literary quality. There are no McDonalds, no parking lots, no box stores. The labyrinth of
streets are devoid of signage and display only the bright colors of luscious flora and Caribbean-painted falling facades. In a story like this one the characters are what make the landscape and the characters live a life in the open air. There are older men playing dominoes in the shade, children playing soccer and baseball in the street and lovers cruising El Malecón, the broad esplanade and seawall outlining the coast. All scenes are accented with
the array of colorful mid-century cars le; behind when the United States ended ties and began the embargo. On August 14th the US Embassy raised it’s flag in Havana for the first time since it was lowered in January of 1961. As one who has followed the recent neighborly handshakes and seen what could so easily change in Cuba’s current visual culture, I would suggest you take advantage of the opportunity to visit Cuba now. This beautiful country will be stepping out of those literary landscapes of untouched architecture and mid-century imports and greeting modern times. In the speech delivered by Secretary of State John F. Kerry, he spoke of looking forward, “...as two peoples who are no longer enemies or rivals but neighbors.” He illuminates the Cuban people that welcomed me with warm, resilient and hopeful faces. Our neighbors, once again, our :iends. www.LUXIERE.com

Taking Stock: a financial overview by Melinda Olbert, J.D., CFP
From the May 21st peak in the S&P 500 Index to the August low, shares were down 12.35%. It has been four years since shares lost more than 10% and some investors had become complacent while others were waiting for a correction. The recent volatility has le= investors shaken. It is this type of stock market activity that o=en causes investors to make poor decisions guided by emotion rather than logic. If we analyze what events have caused the volatility and what long term effect those events are likely to have on our holdings, we can make better decisions.
Still, total exports to all our trading partners combined account for 13.5% of our GDP, so the impact of Canada’s recession can’t be all that devastating. If we lost 100% of our exports to Canada (which is unlikely), it would reduce our GDP by approximately 2%. Since it is far more likely that we will only lose a portion of our exports to Canada and since our economic indicators have remained somewhat positive throughout the last two quarters of slowed growth in Canada, I do not think the impact will be enough to throw us into recession. Research by T. Rowe Price indicates that, in most cases, the market recovers rather quickly with strong returns <om recession lows. All the more reason to stay invested, collect your dividends and maybe even invest a little more when things look bleak.
“It is this type of stock market activity that often causes investors to make poor decisions guided by emotion rather than logic.”
The selloff began immediately a=er China announced a devaluation of its currency. Many observers took this as an indication that China was trying to boost exports to improve a slowing economy. However, it is not news that China’s economy is slowing. They have been slowing for years and this should have been priced into the market. Additionally, China’s move to devalue their currency was in line with their negotiations with the IMF to obtain Special Drawing Rights. Moreover, US exports to China account for less than 1% of our GDP. We are a net importer <om China and their currency devaluation could actually save us money. China’s shrinking imports impact developing Asia-Pacific countries such as Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand which depend on their exports to China to a greater extent than other countries. I would venture to guess that these countries represent a small portion of your overall portfolio.
Meanwhile, media paid little attention to the fact that Canada, our largest trading partner accounting for 16% of our total exports, entered a recession. (An example of why you should not depend solely on what you hear on the news.) This stands to be far more impactful to the US economy than events in China.
A third factor impacting the selloff is the uncertainty over when the Fed will raise rates. How the market will react to an increase in rates will depend on the view of the economy at the time and on the shape of the yield curve, among other factors. The stock market cares about interest rates because higher rates of return on fixed income securities reduces the attractiveness of stocks and because higher interest rates can reduce profitability of corporations that depend on debt financing. However, the market has usually adjusted to rate increases in the past and, on average, provided a positive return. Additionally, most people expect the next set of rate hikes to be very gradual and a rate hike will indicate that the Fed has confidence in our economy. When market volatility makes you queasy, take some time to review your financial goals. Make sure your advisor knows of any withdrawals you expect to make <om your portfolio in the next two or three years. Remember that a diversified portfolio has holdings meant to provide income or stability as well as holdings that are meant to provide growth. Some of your
010.qxp 9/22/15 1:53 PM Page 1
holdings are growing to provide income at the end of your expected life span. Those holdings may be the ones that take steeper declines in tumultuous times, but you must remember that they have years to recover before you spend them. One thing to observe in the recent market volatility is how fast the market moves up and down. Many people think the increased volatility is caused by electronic trading algorithms that process large orders automatically. Whatever the reason, the moves o=en don’t make any sense. Down 1000 points, then up 900, then down again. If you try to time the market, you risk selling when it has already moved down and buying a=er it has already moved up. There are also trading costs to consider. It is very difficult to time the trade just right to make a large profit when the market moves so quickly. For many investors it is best to just let your portfolio work the way it was meant to. Take income <om your lower risk investments and let the more volatile investments grow over time. If you want to take advantage of market dips, you might keep a little cash on the sidelines when the market is booming and deploy it during corrections, but don’t try to sell when you think the market is going to crash, because you probably will just lock in your losses and miss out on the recovery.
