FREEDOM: A LIFE WELL-PLAYED A Note from the Publisher Freedom means something different and uniquely personal to each of us. While one person may relish a solo trip to the French Riviera, another person may sink blissfully into a mountain of pillows with the latest thriller and a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s. Someone else might choose an evening spent regaling friends over a meal. It all comes down to choice: spending your days and nights as you choose, where you choose and with whom you choose. It’s a luxury too heady too pass up, and it’s the concept we are exploring in this issue of Luxiere. We gathered a group of models and set our sights on Freedom, Oklahoma, to celebrate the simple beauty that is the bucolic countryside, far from the hurly-burly of urban life. Our creative team soon discovered that, in this instance, it literally did not require Freedom, but rather it was the stops along the way that offered a perfect backdrop for the sartorial masterpiece within these pages. From the moment man discovered horse power, speed and freedom have been intertwined and the exhilaration of flying, encased in the cockpit of the fastest street vehicle in the world is breathtaking. Fireball Camaros, the brainchild of Ryan Martin, offers the sexy combination of muscle, speed, black leather and flame-red

lacquer to those who are daring enough to imbibe. We love exercising the freedom to live well, to dine exceptionally, and to engage all of our senses as often as we can. Travel liberates our minds. A great meal and conversation with friends, whether in our homes or out for the evening, unleashes our imagination and stokes our soul. The knowledge that our ability to do, and live as we choose is a gift from countless generations that came before us makes freedom the most precious gift of all. A gift we mustn’t squander, and one we hope you’ll embrace as wholeheartedly as we do.

Until next time, Stacy D. Johnson

FOCUS ON HOME 16 PHILANTHROPY: Living a life of dignity, in a pleasant home, requires very little, but it does require a few things. SECOND CHANCES WITH REMERGE

story: Sherry Dale, Partner - The Mettise Group

In 2011, a group of more than 25 agencies was convened by United Way of Central Oklahoma to address the unacceptable fact that Oklahoma incarcerates more women than any other state in the nation. From that workgroup, known as the Oklahoma Collaborative, ReMerge was created and accepted its first participant in September, 2011. I am honored to serve on the Board of Directors of this important nonprofit and enjoyed the opportunity to interview Terri Woodland, Executive Director. What is ReMerge?

ReMerge is a nonprofit organization providing a diversion from incarceration for mothers of minor children or women who are pregnant. We serve moms charged with nonviolent crimes in Oklahoma County who have been approved by the District Attorney’s office to enter our program. We provide an array of services to remove barriers women face when raising children alone and navigating the criminal justice system, increasing chances of recovery and long term success. ReMerge provides comprehensive services designed to transform pregnant women and mothers facing incarceration into productive citizens. What are the outcomes?

We’ve been very pleased with the outcomes in a short period of time. We accepted our first participant in September, 2011. To date, 80 women have successfully completed the program, positively impacting the lives of 195 minor children by keeping their mothers out of prison. Our recidivism rate is 5% and our completion rate is 72%. Since beginning the program, ReMerge has saved the state more than $12 million dollars by keeping these 80 graduates out of prison and in the community with their children. In addition, our graduates are contributing members of society, employed, paying taxes and caring for their children. How is ReMerge different from other programs?

ReMerge is designed to work with high risk, high need mothers. If the proper supports and services aren’t offered to facilitate rehabilitation, these mothers are likely to reoffend - not because they are hardened criminals, but because they face so many barriers when trying to raise children alone. We remove barriers so moms can focus on rehabilitation, learning to live life clean and sober, and reunite with their children and families to become productive citizens. The definition of diversion is an instance of turning something aside from its course. These mothers are sitting in jail on a course that ends in prison time. We divert these women from that course and bring them to ReMerge where they are given tools to build a foundation that sets a new course for their future.

14 LUXIERE

Rather than step foot in a prison, these moms step into a new opportunity of treatment, recovery, and hope. We collaborate with more than 35 organizations within our community to provide these services, which include: safe and sober housing, transportation, education and employment, trauma informed treatment for mental health and addiction, legal services, and an array of other life skills to increase chances of long term recovery and success. ReMerge works because of its holistic focus aimed at removing barriers and building foundations for success. Tell us about a typical ReMerge mother

The average ReMerge mother is 29 years old, has two children and is facing charges related to drug or alcohol abuse. More than half grew up in a very dysfunctional family where there was violence, abuse, addiction or a parent who was incarcerated. Most have experienced trauma, either in their childhood or as an adult, with more than half reporting rape or intimate partner violence. Many of the women come into the program lacking basic skills and necessities such as safe and sober housing, education, employment, positive support systems, adequate healthcare, parenting skills, family support and reliable transportation. Many are unemployed and/or underemployed unable to earn a living wage so they can care for themselves and their children. What is the cost of the program and how is the program funded?

ReMerge is free to participants and their families. The average time needed to successfully complete the program is 19 months, and the cost per year is $17,000. The average annual cost per inmate incarcerated in an Oklahoma prison is $18,467. This incarceration cost does not include the cost to care for children in guardianship or foster care placements, the emotional toll on families and lost wages. ReMerge is funded by blending public and private dollars. Our public support comes from Oklahoma Department of Corrections and Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Other funding comes from foundations, grants, corporations, and individual donations. We are constantly looking for new funding sources and hope to increase individual and public support contributions in the future.

Please share a success story

At a young age, Lauren started drinking alcohol which became a gateway drug to many other recreational drugs. Pregnant and 16 years old, she stayed sober during her pregnancy. Ryleigh was born in January, 2008. Due to Lauren’s addiction, her life had become completely unmanageable and she knew she could not care for her daughter. Eight months after Ryleigh was born, Lauren signed guardianship over to her grandmother. Just 23 years old and facing charges that would result in being sentenced to prison, Lauren was offered the ReMerge program as an alternative. She was ready for change and a chance at being a mother to Ryleigh when she entered the program. Success was challenging, but she never gave up fighting to get her daughter back. With the support of ReMerge, her grandparents, and her mother, Lauren successfully completed the ReMerge program in July, 2015. Currently, Lauren is employed full time at the Better Business Bureau. Ryleigh, now age 9, is living with Lauren full time and is attending school in Edmond. Lauren is very active in AA and attributes her continued success to her positive support system at her place of employment, her participation in the ReMerge continuing care program, and her family - especially her grandparents and Ryleigh. Lauren’s story is similar to many other stories. Addiction is a disease, not a crime. Individuals struggling with addiction can learn to live a life free from drugs and alcohol, and become a contributing member of society.

ReMerge Graduates

Lauren’s words:

“When I came into the program I was broken, hopeless and I trusted no one. Slowly, but surely; I started to discover who I am. Somewhere between the AA meetings, self-help classes, and the love and support, I gained a new outlook on life. I graduated the program on July 23rd, 2015. Since I graduated, I have continued to use the skills and tools that ReMerge taught me to better my future. I now have full-custody of my daughter, Ryleigh, and less than a week ago, we moved into our very first home together. I am surrounded by relationships that are full of love and support. ReMerge loved me when I could not love myself and carried me when I could not stand on my own two feet. They helped me learn to live and love again. This program has touched my heart in a way that I will never be the same again. My heart is full and I am forever grateful.”

CHAOS, DESIGN AND HEART by: Debbie Anglin / photography: Josh Welch

It looks like chaos. Pieces that don’t match, thrown next to each other, stacked on top of each other. To the untrained eye, the Focus on Home warehouse, filled with donated sofas, dining room tables, lamps and headboards looks like an unorganized mess. So it is with the clients they serve - families who are moving out of homelessness. These are people who haven’t had a lot of order or harmony in their lives - living in a shelter, in their car or on a friend’s sofa for weeks or months. They are the single mom with small children who finally found another job. They are the man who served his country and recently beat an addiction. They are getting back on their feet and are thrilled beyond words to get their own place. “It’s incredible when someone who didn’t have a home moves into a place that’s all their own,” says Joli Sanders, founder and executive director of Focus on Home. “But they walk into

a completely empty space. Where will they eat dinner – and on what plates? Where will their kids lay their heads that first night?” An interior designer by trade, Sanders remembers the early time in her career, as a struggling single mother, in a place filled with furniture discarded from others. Her successful career in interior design led her to wonder how a great resource, “old” furniture from a redesign, usually still in great shape, could be used again to help people with no furniture. She checked with organizations that serve the homeless and found there was a tremendous need. “An empty space isn’t ready for a family,” adds Sanders. “I want our families’ experience, when they walk through their front door, to be one of amazement. We furnish their homes down to the details – the table is set with plates, napkins, glasses and forks. The bed is made with clean sheets, fluffy pillows and warm blankets. No more chaos. It’s ready for them to start living.

“We help families create comfortable, dignified homes where they can live, love and grow strong.”

Thank you to Anglin Public Relations for finding and sharing big ideas and the people making them.

“Moemoea” is the indigenous New Zealand or Maori word for dream. It was certainly Peter Jackson’s dream to adapt his now famous Lord of the Rings trilogy from page to screen with extensive location filming across his homeland. Kiwi Jane Campion’s Oscar winning period drama, The Piano, is a reverie of the new Zealand landscape. But these famous storytellers are not the only ones who find that the treasures of the Southland of New Zealand can charge the imagination and satisfy fantasy. Ornithologists daydream with excitement of the dozens of endemic bird species. Animal lovers hope for a glimpse of the hector dolphins found nowhere else in the world. Gemologists wonder at the myriad Maori designs native carvers continue to produce from the beautiful greenstone that is mountain jade. Writers are spellbound with the tales told by living characters who seem to spring directly from the pages of The Old Man and the Sea. Hikers can mark their goals with the Great Walks, the premier tracks that pass through the chimera of spectacular scenery. Adrenaline junkies seeking to live their fantasy of “go big or go home” find rock climbing, zip lines, skiing, kayaking, white water rafting, jet boating and diving with the sharks. A Pinot Noir from the vineyards of the central Otago valley becomes a muse for even the most discerning oenologist...and seafood lovers revel in sweet dreams after a meal of succulent blue cod, albacore tuna, arrow squid, green-lipped mussels or bluff oysters harvested fresh daily. For all that, it may be the photographer who discovers the most heavenly experience in the land that time forgot. New Zealand is a vivid narrative that explodes before the lens. It was my dream come true.

(405) BREWING CO. FOUNDERS PLAY WITH FLAVOR AND FINESSE IN NORMAN’S FIRST MICROBREWERY & ON-SITE TAPROOM by: Melanie Wilderman / photos: Jana Carson

With a dedication to hyper-local ingredients and creative flavors (405) Brewing Co., Norman’s first microbrewery with an on-site taproom, has been making craft beer since 2015, but opened its taproom to the public in February. However, the first inklings for this business sparked a decade ago on a boys-only cross-country road trip. 2007: Friends and Norman natives, Jonathan Stapleton and Trae Carson, along with two other buddies, embarked on a nine-day beer-tasting bachelors’ trip for the soon-to-be-married Carson. The goal? Bring back a varied plethora of delectable brews to stock the bar for the wedding. They accomplished their goal, but the trip, several years before the boom in microbreweries would spread across the country, also sparked a passion and business interest in Stapleton and Carson. “What we were tasting was very inspirational for what beer could be,” Carson said. “We discovered so many interesting flavors that brewers were incorporating into their beers.” 2015: Early in the year, with a secured location in north Norman and the brewing equipment in place, the long-time friends turned business partners, were percolating their first batch. FDR, an imperial coffee stout, was ready for bottling in April. The name FDR articulates a distinct meaning for the brewers—the foundation of their philosophy of brewing. It stands for “F the Damn Rules.” Not to say they are lax on precision in their process, but rather, they will experiment with flavors and not shy away from challenges. “It’s art. It’s science. It’s cuisine. Presentation in a glass,” Carson said about brewing. For Stapleton, FDR mean the freedom to make beer as they choose. As he puts it, “Each style doesn’t need to be like everyone else’s version of that style. Sometimes we find it difficult to put our beer into a category, and that’s fine.”

36 LUXIERE

Local connoisseurs did not seem to mind the unique flavor combinations, as several (405) beers became favorites in Norman restaurants, like the Grapefruit Sour (emphasis on both grapefruit and sour) and Brown, a smooth, Southern-style ale. 2017: After SB 424 passed the previous year, along with some changing local ordinances in Norman, (405) Brewing expanded its services. They now serve the beers they make on-premise to customers at the same location. The taproom went live in February and offers up to eight custom brews. The latest for the summer is Yeah!, a northeast-style IPA that Carson describes as not supremely bitter, but rather presenting a “juicy hop.”

“Every batch is made by us . . . putting in the grain, taking it out. Everything, done by human hands.” regulars,

as

he puts it “a community that loves that there’s finally craft brewing in Norman.” But they are also seeing new customers from all over the state and country every week, a varied clientele he describes as “chill” yet “fun and engaging.” Stapleton said he enjoys talking with the customers in the relaxing ambience of the taproom not only about (405)’s beer, but their individual interests in and love of beer. The entrepreneurial duo is committed to keeping as much of their operational as local as possible, with their barrels coming from Scissortail Distillery in Moore, coffee for flavoring from Mariposa Coffee Roastery in Norman, bottles made in Henrietta, boxes from Chickasaw, and using local businesses for printing merchandise and local artists for the designs. And aside from the local, they are committed to “reduce, reuse, and recycle,” which includes upcycling in their décor and machinery when possible. For example, the brewing system is reclaimed materials from dairy graveyards in Wisconsin, and the tap handles are made from vintage telephone handles from the 1940s and ‘50s. Their hands-on approach to brewing is also key to their style and product. “There’s no automation, no computers,” Stapleton said. “Every batch is made by us . . . putting in the grain, taking it out. Everything, done by human hands.”

FIREBALL CAMARO: MUSCLE CAR LEGEND IN THE MAKING by: Christine Eddington / photography: 405 Photo

Fact: the fastest gasoline-powered street cars in the world are built in Norman, Oklahoma. At Fireball Performance, Ryan Martin, the young titan behind the (literal and figurative) wheel oversees all of his horsepower, and all of his men, from a small, Spartan office high above the floor of a huge warehouse just north of the college town. A bright yellow, massive crane is built into the ceiling, and cars in stages ranging from jarring disarray to gleaming perfection are lined up in rows. Martin, a mad scientist-speed demon hybrid with a wide smile and easy manner, has been transforming Camaros into rocket ships with wheels for about a year with two partners, Billy Hayes, with whom Martin operates B&R Performance Automotive, and Russ Harrison, who grew up watching street racing feet from his front yard in the flat river bottoms of the Washita River. “I was born loving cars. When I was 15, I got my first car, and I knew it had to be a Mustang. My first race was in Noble when I was 16, and I’ve been racing ever since,” Martin says. The man is laser focused and as competitive as they come. A quick glance through the Fireball website yields such fierce calls-to-action as “Burn Hellcats and Cobras to the ground!” Martin has also been one of the stars of the Discovery Channel’s reality TV show “Street Outlaws,” for two of its nine seasons, racing his way through the pack, week by week. “With the Fireball Camaro, we have made an affordable supercar. Our 700 model, which is our base model, gives you the performance of a Hellcat, which costs $90,000, at $49,900. Our 900 version, which runs about $90,000, will blow the doors off of a Hellcat. It’s faster than a Corvette.”

He adds, “America’s love for the 1960s muscle car is coming back around. The success of the Dodge Hellcat and the Saleen Ford Mustang, and even the Ferrari. We wanted to make a super car that could start at a more affordable price point. We start at our 700 base model and go up from there. Right now, Fireball Camaros are available through 13 dealerships in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Florida and Arkansas.” What happens to an ordinary Camaro when the boys at Fireball get their hands on it? “We increase the horsepower and modify the appearance. There are three levels, the 700, the 900 and the 1200. We feel like we have perfected our Camaro line, and now we’re looking at increasing our volume and possibly adding a truck line.” As he speaks, his shrewd business acumen makes its way to the forefront. He’s very precise in his manner and in the words he uses. He seamlessly and discreetly handles five quick phone calls as he tells the Fireball story. Every so often, he shoots a quick glance down to the customization bay, where men circle bright red Camaros like surgeons. The cars are sexy in a bad-boy kind of way. Less Arthur Fonzarelli, and more Colin Ferrell or Christian Bale. They’re just retro enough while still being technologically ultra-modern. A Fireball Camaro is a tough little package, dipped in a shiny, bright red coat of paint, which frankly would make a fantastic shade of nail polish.
