Morgan Robinson is a world-renowned sculptor whose Stillwater studio is a hub of international commissions. He is represented in galleries from Palm Springs to Tokyo, and his wildly thoughtful furniture designs and sculptural installations are sought by collectors far and wide. His story began in small-town Oklahoma, and we bring it to you on page 14.

When we imagine our bucket-list travel dreams, one that surfaces more often than others is magical, colorful Peru. One day we will walk its cities’ bustling streets, sample its beautiful wares and dine in its fragrant cafes. We will hike its mystical trails and meet the people who call it home. Until then, we will enjoy the next-best thing, a Peruvian adventure lovingly documented by globetrotting photographer Shevaun Williams on page 23. Closer to home, two people are working in very different ways to make our state shine. This issue’s Woman of Influence (page 10), Jennifer Grigsby, is a quiet, steady

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE It’s usually true that those who do the most good go about it quietly, in a matter-of-fact manner, with little interest if any in recognition. Jennifer Grigsby has the heart of a servant and shares her many blessings with her hometown and state in as many ways as she can, primarily through philanthropy. “Philanthropy is a big part of my life,” Grigsby says. “I just feel a sense of responsibility. As a person who has been in this community for almost 50 years, and as a person who has time and treasure, I make a point of supporting organizations in the community that help a broad spectrum of needs.” Her philanthropic philosophy was honed by watching one of the best. Her current position of CFO for Ascent Resources was preceded by nearly two decades at Chesapeake Energy. Both companies were founded by the late, legendary oil man and philanthropist Aubrey McClendon. “The most influential people in my life have been people I met at Chesapeake: Aubrey McClendon and my best friend and mentor Martha Burger. I miss Aubrey every day, and I try to honor his vision and his efforts with my work and my community involvement.” Grigsby focuses on making Oklahoma better for all Oklahomans. She is a proud OSU alumna and earned a degree in accounting from that fine institution. Then she came back home. “I am a lifelong Oklahoma City girl and it never occurred to me to leave,” she says. She went on to earn an MBA from Oklahoma City University. “I’m a huge OSU fan, and I volunteer quite a bit in Stillwater. I am the immediate past chairman of the Board of Trustees for the OSU Foundation and have served as chair of the OSU Alumni Association Board. I also serve on the executive committee of the Dean’s Council for the Spears School of Business and in other advisory roles supporting the Spears School and the OSU School of Accounting,” Grigsby says. Her board service is not limited to Stillwater; many Oklahoma City nonprofits enjoy the benefits of her attention as well. She is deliberate by nature and prefers organizations that do the most good for the largest segment of the population. Among others, she lends her
time and talent to the United Way, Leadership Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and the YMCA. She is also the only female member on the boards of the Petroleum Club and Crossfirst Bank. Breaking barriers and helping other women excel is a passion for Grigsby. She and her bestie, Martha, have formed an LLC, which they use for philanthropic investments. “One group we support is Purse Power. I also support Impact Oklahoma. We absolutely believe in the power and value of female leadership. It can change the world. Studies show that public companies with a higher percentage of women on their boards perform better, in terms of stock price appreciation.” Purse Power is a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging women to use their massive purchasing power to drive positive change. The theory is that if women will buy from women-owned and women-led companies, glass ceilings and pay inequity can be quickly eradicated. Impact Oklahoma is a nonprofit group through which women pool their money and grant funds to nonprofits in five categories: Family, Health and Wellness, Education, Community and Culture. Grigsby is a soft-spoken barrier-breaker in other ways, as well. She’s spent her career in oil and gas, a male-dominated field, and pours a lot of intentional time into working with younger women, mentoring, and speaking at conferences. Her husband and two sons are completely on board with Grigsby’s mission and aid her efforts by being a self-sufficient home team. “My husband is a stay-at-home dad. It works for us. We made a very intentional decision, and it works for us.” The family spends lots of down time together at their weekend home at Lake Eufaula or tailgating and attending athletic events at OSU. But Grigsby’s focus during the workweek is her career and all that comes with it. “I’m so blessed to work alongside so many strong women and to have been mentored by incredible men and women throughout my career, with no regard to my gender,” she says. But it’s deeper than that. “Personally, I am always looking to help love and cultivate the next young Aubrey out there, waiting to flourish.”

by taking a closer look at that the things that can do nothing else but encompass my sight. Unable to ignore organic language, I follow the indigenous bends in pieces of nature. There is no part of my environment too obscure to inspire. Refracted light and shadows overlapping as well as elements that can be held in your hand or seen with a magnifying glass; they all hold purpose and contain beauty. The beauty perceived is what suggests a more insightful, more meaningful spirituality. The meaning projects out of imagination and undeniable existence, and attraction is seen from a vast array of perspectives.�

Sculptor Morgan Robinson has been working since 2:30 this morning, and as he rushes into the coffee shop, his elegant bearing tussles briefly with his exhaustion, with the former claiming victory as he folds his tall frame into the seat across the table, coffee in hand. He has just completed a complicated and large privately-commissioned sculpture installation at a Stillwater home. “I feel like I am on my own path. I’ve accepted it and am comfortable in my own skin,” Robinson says. Getting to this point took him around the globe, from tiny towns to vast cities, and through several artistic disciplines. “I became a professional artist in 2009. My career has gained momentum from there. It really started to blossom in Japan,”
he says. He also learned a great deal about himself in the time he spent in the Australian bush country, but that story comes a bit later. Robinson grew up in rural Oklahoma – Perkins, to be specific. He attended Perkins schools and then transferred to Ripley, Oklahoma, in high school. His graduating class numbered a whopping 36 people. He is a self-described ‘omnivert,’ meaning he fluctuates between introversion and extraversion. “There was no art in Ripley, but I found my way into home ec classes where I could create. That side of me has always been there. I was also a pitcher and went to college on a baseball scholarship, but I’d make jewelry for the baseball team, and pretty soon other teams wanted some, too,” Robinson says.

distribute things I’d made, to patent them,” he says. “He sent me to Australia for six months where I worked as a jackaroo, shearing sheep, while I figured out what I wanted to do.” Suffice it to say that Robinson’s jackaroo days were few, and he returned to the states clear-minded and ready to work. “It was time for me to simplify and slow down. I wanted to be very conscious about what I was doing in life, and what was in my life,” he says.
He took a jewelry making class and had what he describes as a ‘finding moment.’ “Once I found jewelry, the way forward made sense. Terms were set. The world loves beauty, and I could supply it. I dropped baseball and changed my major to jewelry. I fought for it.” Soon, though, the budding sculptor began showing up at the jewelry program with sheet metal. “My idea was that I would create ‘wall jewelry.’ But someone said ‘no, that’s sculpture,’ and I got kicked out of the jewelry program.” Sculpting had an immediate, strong connection for him, and the young artist began welding and woodworking. “When school was over, I didn’t really know how to be an artist. I’d never been to an art gallery or studio. So I approached an entrepreneur to help me protect and

He went to Santa Fe with the thought of putting down roots, but didn’t feel a connection to the city. Back in Oklahoma, Robinson landed in Stillwater, where he remodeled and lived in a bona fide tiny house and spent his days sculpting and working for a cabinet maker. The winds of fate soon saw fit to send him to Japan. “I did a house swap with a Japanese girl who had a house in Japan. She loved my Stillwater house, so we traded houses and I lived in Japan, trading work for studio space. I started to get a few commissions, and I met my wife. We have a daughter, who is six. They currently live in Japan, and I travel back and forth and am in Japan about five times a year.” His early commissions led to a solo show and more commissions. Today, Robinson creates beautiful, minimal furnishings and sculptures for clients around the world. His work is represented in galleries in Aspen, Denver and Vail, Colorado, and also Palm Desert, California.
He’s just received his largest commission from an architectural firm in Washington, DC, where he will create a 70-foot-long bronze piece for an executive office building on L Street. His work is curvy, organic, complex and approachable. He has also been tapped by Oklahoma City University to serve as a visiting artist, working in a studio on campus, and interacting with students in the school’s fine arts department. A solo show in the spring at OCU’s Hulsey Gallery will feature some 25 works of his. He is at once global and hyper-local, and now that he’s found his truest path, he’s just getting started.

There is a divine energy which envelops you at every turn during a trek through the Andes of Peru. The archeology, architecture, and arts of the Andean civilizations whose maxims usually start with, “For over 1000 years”, are some of the most unique treasures found on the planet. Just being in the center of the most well-known, the ancient Incan Empire, is extraordinary. There is a reason Machu Picchu is on every top ten travel bucket list. LUXIERE 25
No adventure to the highlands of Peru is complete without a journey into The Sacred Valley. Stretching roughly 60 kilometers, Inca ruins are scattered throughout the valley and authentic villages populate the province with each town embracing the unique style of clothing that identifies the wearer as belonging to that region. In combination with a patrician profile, a Quechuan woman wears a fedora-like hat, her hair in two long braids down her back, an embroidered jacket, skirt, heavy stockings made of hand-woven wool, and the lliclla or cape; the Quechuan man wears dark handwoven pants, a chullo hat of alpaca wool, a multi-colored poncho and hojotas or sandals. All embrace a noble heritage. Situated at over 11,000 feet, the city of Cuzco means “Center of the World” in the native South American language of Quechua. UNESCO notes that “the city represents the sum of 3,000 years of indigenous and autonomous cultural development in the Peruvian southern Andes...a unique testimony to the urban and architectural achievements of important political, economic and cultural settlements during the pre-Columbian era in South America.” Remarkable not only for its history and architecture, the ancient city is also host to a rich tapestry of colorful fiestas and lavish carnivals. The largest and most spectacular celebration, the South American Festival of Corpus Christi, is the most impressive. Sixty days after Easter Sunday, colossal statues of fifteen saints and virgins, clad in an impressive array of jewels and luxurious brocades and carried upon the shoulders of the faithful, arrive from their respective parishes to the cathedral of Cuzco. The joyous atmosphere includes talented dancers and musicians and food stalls displaying the traditional dish for Corpus Christi, the Chiriuchu, a dish that brings together food from all over Peru including chicken, guinea pig, thick corn tortillas and roasted corn. Ollantaytambo is a beautiful town located on the far side of the Sacred Valley from the city of Cuzco. Probably the best surviving example of Inca town planning, the Inca ruins located in Ollantaytambo are some of the best stonework outside of Machu Picchu. Do not forget to explore the depths of the city to engage with the villagers and have a bell jar of corn beer. The village of Chinchero, at 12,345 feet, is one of the few towns in the valley that is higher than Cuzco. It is home to a communal market where the natives still barter and chat with neighbors while buying local produce for the week’s meals. The bordering craft market features the famous handmade fabrics created with unique designs and brilliant colors. Indigenous artisans using techniques passed through generations offer a chance to practice your Spanish while doing your own trade. For the more intrepid traveler, there is the festival of Quyllurit’i - the Snow Star Festival – which is held annually with a pilgrimage through the dizzying heights and stunning landscape of the Cordillera Vilcanota range of the Peruvian Andes. Ostensibly a Catholic festival, the local indigenous people of the Andes know it as a native celebration of the stars that takes place during the first full moon before Corpus Christi and coinciding with the reappearance of the Pleiades constellation. The festival is an exclusively Andean triad combining worship of the Apus (mountain gods), Pachamama (the earth mother) and Jesus with no apparent lack of harmony. The mission for foreigners starts with 5 hours on horseback along a rocky path, climbing a full 16,000 feet and passing eight crosses where Christian pilgrims show reverence. Most natives cover the distance on foot, carrying tents and food and even children on their backs in a simple manta, a traditional Peruvian carrying cloth. Aggressive dancers in masks and multi-layered skirts and musicians with drums and flutes perform with fervor from beginning to end.

The display is most impressive at the apex, when troupes offer intricate dancing displays on steep slopes to impress the Snow Star that lives deep inside the mountain. It is a singular experience.

And then there is what many call the crown jewel of Peru, Machu Picchu, the ruins of a 15th-century Incan citadel. Nothing can prepare you for the grandeur of the sight. Perched in the mountainous cloud forests of Peru 1000 feet above the Urubamba River, the site is made up of more than 150 buildings ranging from baths and houses to temples and sanctuaries. Incan craftsman are still recognized 500 years later as some of the best masons in the world. The World Wildlife Fund explains, “The structures were so well built with a technique called ashlar (stones that are cut to fit together without mortar) that not even a knife blade can fit between stones. The stones of Machu Picchu are reputed to ‘dance’ or bounce during a seismic event and then fall back into their rightful place”. The site’s origins remain a mystery, but the secrets are part of the magic. But don’t listen to me...go see for it yourself. Give yourself the experience of Peru!

The Internet is littered with tips on creating a perfect mudroom, entryway or closet. Entire stores are dedicated to matching you with the “right bin”. So, why are we all still engaged in the battle against clutter and the judgment it brings? We have expectations that our home should be stylish, functional, up-to-date, effortless. We see pictures of staged homes, and it’s hard to translate those images to our reality. These expectations bring on an immense amount of pressure and self- judgment. This shuts down our decision-making power and motivation, ultimately leaving us prone to more clutter.

The key to conquering clutter is to recognize the role emotions play in the process. Set aside the judgment that “this should be easy” and “everyone should be able to do this.” Remove expectations, and focus on what you want and need from your space and things. Here’s my advice.

Feel overwhelmed, but ask for support. Have a trusted friend join you. The extra hands help, but the outside opinion really makes the difference.
Create a calm space to de-clutter specific items. It is hard to focus on small or emotional items when your overall space is a mess.

Celebrate success. Take “before” pictures to see your progress. This is work, so give yourself the credit you deserve.

His story is the quintessential American Dream: a young, hardworking man from a small town attends college on an athletic scholarship (golf), works hard and builds himself a life and career that are as satisfying as they are impressive. An offer to work as a golf pro followed his graduation. In 2007, he bought his first house. Around the same time, he had also begun to explore new career ideas – the life of a golf pro is exciting, but grueling. “I was remodeling my house myself, and I’d also begun working in oil and gas. That was in 2007. Then came 2008, and as we all know, oil prices dropped. It opened my eyes to the fact that oil and gas would always be an up-and-down business. It will always fluctuate, that’s the nature of the business, so I began to focus on real estate rentals,” Smith says. He started small, buying and renovating properties one at a time while also remodeling his own home. Feeling his oats, he told his real estate agent that if she found a buyer, he’d sell his house. “She sold it the next day,” he says. And so began a career that suits Smith to a tee. He’s flipped houses in Belle Isle, Mesta Park, Heritage Hills and Crown Heights, although it’s a term he feels a little mixed about. “Flippers have gotten a bad name, and it’s true that there are a bunch of bad apples. What I do is not cookie-cutter; I think we are known for our historic renovations. Each house is unique,” he says.

Smith is the founder and principal at FLIPOKC and co-founder/co-owner of Dwell Urban Real Estate. Today he has just completed a remarkable project in one of Oklahoma City’s most beautiful neighborhoods, Lincoln Terrace. It’s a 1928, Spanish Revival marvel. “This house is incredible. I bought it from a couple who had owned it for more than 40 years, and they hadn’t done anything to it except to change the light fixtures, but fortunately they’d saved all of the originals that they’d taken down.” All of the fixtures have been painstakingly restored and rewired by the venerable Lillian Strickler Lighting of Oklahoma City. He’s also been careful to preserve original floors and woodwork, and it’s a point of pride that he’s been able to restore and use all of the doors and kitchen hardware. “We have been able to keep the floor plan 85 percent intact. We created a master suite upstairs and enlarged the kitchen. We kept all of the original iron work, sinks, hardware and the ceiling beams. There are original barrel ceilings throughout the home and countless other beautiful, timeless features of the sort only found in architecturally-significant treasures like this one.”

The ten-foot-tall stained glass window at the front of the house is breathtaking, and Smith hired a glazier to restore and re-lead the entire masterpiece. Its romantic, knights-and-armor motif sets the tone for the entire home. “Our artisan told us that this was the largest stained glass window in Oklahoma. It was all in one section, which is unusual. Unfortunately it had begun to bow, but we were able to correct that by re-leading it into three, smaller panels.” Its beauty has been fully restored, and its structure is now sound. The home was built in 1928, and its owners have been as colorful as its stained glass. Leslie Fain was its occupant from 1932-1936, and Lloyd Judd from 19361948. Judd’s history includes time spent as a member of the World War I American expeditionary force in Siberia, but he was best known for waging a one-man war against the drilling of oil wells in Lincoln Terrace. Smith loves the history of this home, and his careful and elegant restoration and renovation have brought it back to its former glory. Perhaps it’s even more beautiful now, poised and ready for its next century and newest inhabitants.
