The pages of Luxiere unabashedly celebrate great style, magnificent design and the brilliant people who bring it to life, and I am honored to present them to you. There are some you may already know, some who you’ll meet for the first time, and some who are doing new things in big ways, like the five incredible men who have joined forces to build a micro-neighborhood like no other, Elmhurst Court. For me, that makes sense, as the beginning of a new year is about renewal and reinvention. Our feature on Tulsa’s now-iconic Juniper restaurant is about just that. This downtown fine dining establishment has been transformed from something already wonderful into something unparalleled, and we hope you enjoy visiting it through our pages. There is no greater luxury than one’s personal sanctuary. Life’s most important moments happen in our homes, from holidays spent with friends and family to quieter moments of reflection. THE CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION AND THE VOYAGE OF DREAMS story: Christine Eddington / photography: Thom Meyer
When Melinda Olbert reminisces about her trip to Greece last fall, she smiles. She closes her eyes, and it’s clear that she’s been transported back to the those magical days spent dining, delighting and exploring ancient Biblical sites, which for Olbert, a devoted student of the Bible, filled her with gratitude, reverence and wonder. In one spectacular, eight-day adventure, she and a dear friend visited Crete, Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Lindos and Patmos. They indulged in local fare, and Olbert nourished her soul visiting sites many dream of but few have the good fortune of witnessing for themselves. Rather than spend precious time travelling from town to town by land, Olbert opted for the ease and luxury of an Oceana Cruise. “The comfort and service were impressive. The staff-to-guest ratio was 1.5 to one. There were nine gourmet restaurants on the ship, one of which was a wine tasting room,” Olbert said. She and her travel companion made sure to sample the local, off-ship cuisine throughout their journey, often stopping at tiny cafes that dotted the picturesque, narrow streets of Greece. The days were sunny, with temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s. Evenings on the ship were cooler and sometimes breezy. “Each day was filled with beautiful sights and local delicacies, and then back on the ship in the evenings, where our meals were amazing and the accommodations were beyond beautiful. The ship even had a wonderful, well-stocked
library, which was a relaxing place to read and unwind,” she said. In Patmos, the Cave of St. John was the highlight. Now a beautiful chapel, this is the spot where scholars believe St. John made his home while on the island, and where he wrote The Book of Revelation, the last book in the Bible. In nearby Chora, Olbert experienced the incredible Monastery of St. John. The monastery of St. John houses an impressive collection of religious art and artifacts dating from the 11th Century. The ancient town of Rhodes was filled with historic sights. “Rhodes is an ancient, fortified city,” Olbert explained. Its Port of Mandraki is believed to be the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Another notable stop here was the 14th-century Grand Masters Palace, which is fully restored and contains alabaster windows and incredible mosaics depicting scenes from Greek Mythology. A jaunt up the east coast of Rhodes found Olbert and her companion in ancient Lindos. The drive was made beautiful by glimpses of the turquoise sea, numerous orange and lemon groves and classic vineyards. A walking tour took the two through the mazelike streets and deposited them at the Archeological Museum, whose treasures include the building itself, which was begun in 1440 by Grand Master de Lastic with money bequeathed by his predecessor, Fluvian, and completed in 1489 by Grand Master d’Aubusson.

Patmos Crete is the home of the Palace of Knossos, famous as the home of the labyrinth where the Minotaur roamed, and an archeological museum filled with artifacts sure to capture the imagination. Olbert was particularly fascinated by the Phaestos Disc, a six-inch diameter disk emblazoned with a spiral of symbols on each side. Perhaps an ancient alphabet, perhaps the secret of the universe, its meaning and even its authenticity have been hotly debated by scholars since its discovery. Olbert brought a tiny replica home with her, a small but remarkably appropriate memento of a trip so beautiful that words don’t quite do it justice, and the memories of which are beautiful treasures.

Her goal is simple: to make the world a fair place for women, whether in the workplace, in public office, at home or on corporate boards. If you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Linda Haneborg, you might assume she’s out of her depth, that one woman cannot change the world. If you have had the good fortune of making her acquaintance, you know that though she is petite, this woman is a tsunami of positive energy. If Haneborg touches a project, it will succeed beautifully. She’s broken her share of glass ceilings, but she has done it her way, which is to say with panache and a joie de vivre as effervescent as the Veuve Clicquot Champagne she adores. On this evening, the ever-poised Haneborg is beautifully turned out, despite the subzero temperatures, in layers of cashmere. She’s delicately sipping a glass of the aforementioned bubbly from an antique Champagne flute in front of a roaring fire in her prettily-appointed sitting room, sharing what drives her. Her career has taken her to the dizzying heights of the top of the corporate ladder. As the senior vice president of marketing and public relations for Express Employment Professionals, she was responsible for brand management and corporate social responsibility for the $2 billion company, its 600 franchisees and 350,000 employees. Her work now, through Linda Haneborg Associates, is more personal. “At the core, I have been very vocal throughout my life about equality and fair treatment for women, and all people, but I’ve realized now that I have to get involved,” she said. “My career continues to take different directions, but I find that I am becoming very interested in politics. And, frankly, looking back to 30 years ago, I would not have thought that we would still have such a need making sure women have a seat at the table. I am not at all pleased with our progress. For being more than
14 LUXIERE
50 percent of the population, we still have such a very long way to go.” One way Haneborg is working to remedy the current state of affairs is through an initiative called “Women on Boards 20/20,”whose goal is to ensure that by the year 2020, women will hold 20 percent of the positions on corporate boards. “Right now we are at 15 percent. In France, a law has been passed requiring that 40 percent of corporate board positions must be held by women. Now, I hate to think that we Americans would have to pass a law to achieve that. A good way to start, in my opinion, is to encourage more women to start their own companies.” Haneborg is also working to encourage more women to run for public office. “It is a gift to be a public servant. It’s true, there is a lot of sacrifice, but there are a thousand ways for women to become involved. Serving on a homeowners association, or giving of your time to a nonprofit are two small ways to pay it forward.” If she sounds passionate, it’s only because she is, and incredibly so. But where in some, such passion might seem radical or strident; with Haneborg it only seems beautiful, logical and right. The name of this Tulsa bistro speaks to its open, lofty interior, the fresh, natural ingredients chosen punctiliously for caliber and taste, and the gin-infused cocktails served in the simple-yet-elegant bar space. Owner Justin Thompson, a Tulsa native and proprietor of four downtown Tulsa eateries, said Juniper is the style of restaurant he has always wanted to own, which he calls modern American. After a few “identity crises” in its five years, Justin said the bistro has found its niche with a menu boasting comfort and class. The reigning customer favorite, a classic beef stroganoff, proffers well-balanced flavors with fresh pasta, a white wine and mushroom sauce and prime ribeye. The most-sought appetizer, sweet carrot soup, commands more flavor and texture than the simple name would suggest. And, for a greens experience, the autumn arugula salad with maple port vinaigrette totes a tangy surprise—a blue cheese ice cream that melts as you eat, essentially evolving from one bite to the next. Justin believes fiercely in allowing the experiences and talents of his head chefs to guide a menu. A chef himself since 2002, Justin still jumps in to cook as needed at his restaurants, but said he has come to love building businesses and helping others build their careers.

Devoted and true and with us through thick and thin, our pets are unconditionally-loving companions, instant day brighteners, and though they cannot speak, or perhaps because they cannot speak, they are often our closest confidantes. Without them, our worlds would be not a little dimmer, and for many of us, there is nothing our beloved felines and canines need that we won’t gladly procure. To paraphrase Will Rogers, if dogs don’t go to heaven, I daresay I’d rather go with them. Finding a caregiver for them who meets our high standards can be a challenge, and once we’ve found the ideal veterinarian, scheduling routine care into an already-overburdened agenda can feel daunting. If your pet has anxiety issues related to being in the car or visiting the veterinary office, daunting can become dread. Dr. Summer Heatly has created a solution, which although ubiquitous on the coasts, is revolutionary for central Oklahoma. Dr. Heatly’s practice, Great Plains Veterinary Services, is mobile. She brings her services, state of the art equipment and compassionate care to you, thus saving you precious time and greatly diminishing your little darling’s anxiety. Think of it. It’s genius, really. “I bought my mobile clinic in January of 2015,” Heatly says. “My practice had been focused on large animals, primarily horses, for several years, and then my perspective changed. My dog had cancer, and my focus shifted immediately to small animals. But I liked the idea of offering the convenience of what is essentially
a portable, full-service veterinary clinic, much like what a large animal vet offers. I like the old fashioned service idea of house calls, but with the best possible technology.” Heatly’s goal is true convenience. She drives her mobile office to her clients’ doors, and can perform all standard preventive treatments such as vaccines, heartworm tests and the like, with a full laboratory on board, meaning that in the span of twenty minutes or so, she can provide bloodwork such as CBC and blood chemistry profiles. There’s also a surgery suite, enabling her to do spaying and neutering, laceration repair, mass removals and biopsies, X-rays and ultrasounds. “What we see is that animals who don’t like the car or the veterinarian’s office are much happier simply walking outside the door to see me. In the case of especially nervous pets, I often suggest doing our initial examination and shots in the house. This puts everyone at ease, and helps pets to feel comfortable,” she said. Dr. Heatly is a graduate of the excellent veterinary medicine program at Oklahoma State University, and her deep love of all creatures large and small is evident. The moment the conversation turns to her patients, this lovely young woman’s expression softens, and her dedication shines through. “No matter what the day brings, be it 10 sick cats or a colicky horse, I feel lucky every day to practice in this wonderful profession and am so grateful for my patients and clients.”

THE IMPECCABLE CONFLUENCE OF

Five extraordinary men have brought their respective and impressive talents together to create a micro-neighborhood in north Oklahoma City that is an enclave for all things aesthetically perfect. Who is this dream team? Its membership is comprised of Oklahoma City interior design legend Carson See, his brilliantly-pedigreed sons Ross and Corbin, Oklahoma City developer Chris Candelaria, and Scott Torode, of Pfeffer Torode, is a nationally-acclaimed architect with offices in Nashville and Montgomery. Carson See opened the doors to his design business in 1975. His sons Ross See, who earned his design degree from Harrington College of Interior Design and worked for other notable interior designers in New York; and Corbin See, who began his career with the legendary Dallas antique importer, Orion Antiques, and then worked under Holly Hunt as production manager in her Chicago office, both have been partners a decade. “Elmhurst Court is a 16 to 18-home gated residential community. It is unique in that each home is being planned by this group. Every home will be drawn by Scott, and the strength of this team trickles down into every detail,” Candelaria said. For his part, he possesses such a discerning eye that in addition to acquiring the land for Elmhurst Court, he also acquired the land to its immediate south, where the community gate is. “I wanted to control what the residents would see coming and going, so a French-inspired office building was created. The building’s owner has a great eye and really helped drive the look and details of the building. My fear was that if I didn’t develop it, we could end up with something visually unattractive on that corner, and that would be unpleasant for our residents to see every day,” he said. “Among us, everyone has his place,” said Carson See. “We all operate from a position of shared trust and drive for perfection.” In fact, the project and every detail therein is so immaculate that See himself is leaving the historic neighborhoods he’s called home for the past four decades and has a home under construction at Elmhurst Court. “Each home is individual, yet the neighborhood is very intentionally coordinated. We do have the ability to say no, or to make adjustments for the good of all. If you’d have told me I would be building a home on May Avenue, I never would have believed it. But I am. It’s a very modern white brick home, and we have taken care to ensure that each home complements the homes adjacent to it.”

“There is no builder coming in and building spec home after spec home. We all work on every single detail, down to the landscaping. We’ve coordinated the project so that Total Environment will handle all of the properties within Elmhurst Court. The company will come in one day each week and take care of every green space.” Torode agreed. “When we started the project, we tried to envision everything that the type of buyer Elmhurst Court would appeal to would look for in a home. Pam Lane is a fighter. She used to be a trial lawyer for the oil and gas industry in Texas. Now she uses her energy to advocate for disadvantaged youth in Oklahoma County. “There is a young population that is often unseen, sometimes invisible, to many in our community,” Lane explained. “I want to help lift them up and have a voice.” For nearly a decade, Lane has been a CASA of Oklahoma County court-appointed volunteer. She advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the Oklahoma County juvenile court system; preferring the toughest cases that require investigative skills. Through her work with CASA, Lane learned about Youth Services for Oklahoma County. The organization provides a network of services for youth ages 12 to 21 including sheltering, meeting basic needs, teaching life skills, counseling and achieving educational and vocational goals. “Their (CASA and YSOC) stories are similar in that the youth come from a difficult family situation, are facing poverty, or often, don’t have a safe place to live,” Lane explained. “It really spoke to me.” A YSOC board member since 2011, Lane is vice-chair of the board and currently chairs the programming committee that oversees the five different YSOC programs. “The staff are amazing,” Lane said. “I love seeing them in action because it is their dedication, integrity, compassion and expertise that help our youth succeed.” Lane described a 17-year-old boy who had lost his family to death and drug abuse. He was homeless and had recently
dropped out of school. “Our amazing counselors gave him support and direction to get his GED diploma and go to college,” Lane said. “This young man now lives in an apartment with a steady job. His life is changed because Youth Services intervened.” As a mother of three grown children, Lane knows that kids can make questionable choices. It is part of growing and learning. The difference for YSOC youth is that they don’t have support or network to help them learn from their mistakes. This leaves them vulnerable to being in child welfare systems, dropping out of school or getting into trouble with the law. “These kids have so much to offer to the future and our community,” Lane said. “But, if they stay on the path they are on, or they don’t receive any assistance, their chance is extinguished. That is what I fight for – an opportunity for them to have a positive role model and get back on track.” Several of the youth the organization helps are homeless, or couch homeless, meaning they sleep at random houses, not due to their choices but their parent’s mistakes or limitations. “I am constantly surprised that these kids, often minors, get themselves to school and jobs without any support,” Lane said. “No one makes sure they have a ride to school, if they have homework, or even a meal.” That is why Lane continues to fight for the youth for the youth in Oklahoma County. “If you want to change things, this is where it is going to take place – in the youth of our city.”

When Dave Goodman talks about complex, floating staircases, his eyes light up. He is seated at a custom-designed table, next to his business partner and son, Paul, in a spectacular home of Dave’s design in Gaillardia. A dozen steps away is a staircase, which Dave has dubbed the DNA staircase, whose shape allows two people to ascend or descend at the same time, on opposite sides of the staircase, without even seeing one another. It’s equal parts parlor trick and engineering feat, playful and exacting. The home itself is a 10,000 square foot masterpiece. While
Goodman enjoys being involved in all types of design and architecture, on this speculative home, which is currently for sale, he chose to go with a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired “Prairie Contemporary” exterior. He likes to refer to the interior as “Frank Lloyd Wright meets Armani.” “It took almost a year and a half to build it. Due to three levels stacked, with such long, open spans, the structure is steel. All three floors are poured in place concrete. I have never designed the same floorplan twice. I love to work with a piece of land that has views to play to, and to build something that best captures the views.”

Goodman started out in the roofing business shortly after leaving the military in 1976. Most of the homes worked on in those early days were higher-end, often custom designed, which led to his interest in design, architecture and building. He is still in the roofing business today, but was inspired enough by the homes he was roofing at the time to begin building homes himself in 1983. Dave’s son Paul joined him in business after graduating from college in 2009. Every year, Paul plays an increasingly larger role in the operations of the roofing side of Goodman Construction, which in the last two years has also started doing government work at facilities such as Ft. Sill and Tinker Air Force Base. He spends considerable time consulting on complicated roofing projects, and works on the technical infrastructure of the business. The father-son duo has also partnered for the first time on Paul’s brainchild, The Flipside LLC, which is a boutique homeflipping company. Father and son share Dave’s philosophy that homes are living, breathing works of art, and each man brings his own significant strengths to the businesses. Dave has 40-plus years of hands-on experience in the business, and Paul naturally embraces new technologies. Their ability to drill down to the tiniest details is the stuff of legend. 44 LUXIERE

A tour of the home reveals a myriad of one-of-a-kind touches, some whimsical and some highly technical. Two of the doorways’ transoms are crafted from etched glass. Dave opened an app on his phone, and like magic, each transom was illuminated. Another quick tap and they began to change color. Touches like this are a hallmark of Goodman’s design philosophy.

The home’s interior is full of curves, and its rooms manage to be sizable, breathtakingly so, and yet also cozy. Its outdoor living spaces are a series of balconies and a terraced, multi-level deck with a family-sized spa on the ground level with golf course views, and a more private spa with a waterfall wall on the lower level. There is also a perfectly-sized pool, pool bath, an outdoor kitchen and living spaces perfect for entertaining or a quiet weekend at home.

Depending on a family’s needs, the home could have as many as seven bedrooms but has five now. The lower level could easily become a separate apartment for a college student or a magnificent hang-out for younger kids. It’s constructed so that a kitchen could be added to the large space’s westernmost wall. Visually, it’s a departure from the rest of the house with sleek, highly polished concrete floors and floor-to-ceiling glass walls, bringing to mind a modern penthouse loft. Adjacent to that is a four-car garage, with 16-foot long glass panels which are motorized and can be completely opened, allowing a car

collector to showcase up to ten cars. There is also a Crossfit box in the basement space. “With any project I’m involved in, one of my priorities is to create something that is timeless. I am always asking myself what a home will look like in 20 years,” Dave said. “I prefer not to be boxed in to any one style. I believe that that there are always new ways to combine proven architectural elements in a new and visually interesting way. And that philosophy is the core of what we do.”
