LUXIERE REAL ESTATE

Photographer JD Merryweather spent weeks exploring every mesmerizing centimeter of Iceland, a trip he’d dreamt of for years, dining, soaking in geothermal pools and capturing its rugged beauty.

Christian Reed hand crafts beautiful leather bags and small goods one at a time, using vegetable-tanned leather for gorgeous results.

Spacious, luxurious and stunning, this home is an entertainer’s dream. With a spa-like master bath and secluded guest quarters, this home is beauty incarnate.

A sweet ode to a beloved father and Nichols Hills Plaza’s coziest casual upscale eatery, St. Mark’s hits all the marks: excellent food, great drinks and beautiful surroundings.

High-level training for every type of gun owner, clean, climate-controlled shooting lanes, a delicious café and an upscale bar make Wilshire Gun a one-of-a-kind, destination location.

A health care attorney for 20 years and a lifelong problem solver, visionary Laura Fleet saw a need for non-emergency medical transportation, and created SendaRide.

Auston English applies the lessons he learned about life from his father, and on the football field from Coach Bob Stoops, to his new roles as a group leader for Family Builders’ batterers intervention program.

A sophisticated, tongue-in-cheek, sartorial stance, perfect for dashing through the holidays. For him, and for her. For us.

Why own a house when you can inhabit a home? Spa baths, soothing soaking tubs, luxurious heated floors, gorgeous millwork and chefs’ kitchens, beautiful fireplaces, manicured grounds…you’ll find the details that speak to your heart among our pages. Explore.

DELIGHT IN DISCOVERING A Note from the Publisher With every issue of Luxiere, we delight in discovering new ways to explore our guiding concept, and favorite thing: luxury. During this season of the year, as we bustle about preparing to host or be hosted, to gift or be gifted, I believe it is crucial that we remain aware of, and thankful for, the fact that having the freedom to give and receive luxuriously is in itself the biggest gift. In this issue, you will meet a woman who is surely becoming one of the great humanitarians of our time. Sue Ann Arnall, via her work with the Arnall Family Foundation, has set her sights on three causes: criminal justice reform, at-risk youth and animal welfare. She takes a pragmatic approach, engaging in research and augmenting the work of existing non-profits and organizations whose work supports the same. As she puts it “I have the luxury of time, and can really dive deep into research and community problem solving.” For Sue Ann, giving of her time for the betterment of society is the pinnacle of luxury. A delicious meal, beautifully prepared and graciously served, is a simple luxury that I’d hate to live without. The team at St. Mark’s Chop

Our philosophy is always quality over quantity, and we’ve studiously scoured Oklahoma’s most interesting purveyors, bringing you a well-edited best of the best. May our ideas inspire your giving, and may your holidays be bright. Warm wishes this special season,

Arnall has seen tangible progress. In January, there were 2,800 people in the Oklahoma County Jail. As of October, that number had dropped to 1,700 (it is now 1,600). Most of the people in the state penitentiary are there for parole violations, not new crimes. “A lot of the time, it’s a poverty problem,” Arnall says, meaning that many of the programs required for parolees are feebased. For an under-employed single mother working a minimum wage job with no car, attending a mandatory, thrice-weekly program that costs her $15 per session isn’t sustainable. Arnall helps find programs that satisfy parole requirements at lower or no cost. For her, solving one piece of the puzzle leads to another. She’s recently hired an attorney whose priority is to catalogue and evaluate the services, costs and outcomes of more than 100 programs offered in Oklahoma County, so that people who need them will be able to use them, while still working to better themselves and their situations. “I went to a program once, and a woman came in and fainted because she’d had to sell plasma to pay for the program.” For Arnall, like the great humanitarians who have come before her, inequities based on inescapable poverty, unfair systems and race are untenable, and she is using her resources to change them, surely and methodically, but the resource she find most valuable may come as a surprise. “Our police departments and courts are forced to fund themselves on the backs of the indigent. I have time. I have the luxury of having the time to try to figure it out, and so that’s what I am trying to do.”

TRAVEL

ICELAND story & photographs by JD Merryweather

LUXIERE 13

I travel to boost my creativity, expose myself to new cultures and, as I’ve matured, to seek out fine dining opportunities focusing on local cuisine. Iceland has been on my radar for years. It offers everything I love about going on an adventure and definitely qualifies as photography expedition. My Iceland 2017 became a three-week journey, true to the Anthony Bourdain style of No Reservations which not only included restaurants but accommodations, too. I rented a “camper” which was basically a van with a fold-out bed and room for gear. As I hit the road, my goals were to circle the island counter clockwise, seeking out some interesting landmarks, enjoy several of the top rated restaurants, meet some locals and soak in as many geothermal pools as possible, off the beaten path. Camping afforded the opportunity to roam without an agenda and truly experience the fringe. What I find interesting is that the entire island of Iceland would fit within the State of Oklahoma size-wise! A circling of the country is roughly 858 miles around on the primary Ring Road. I ended up clocking over 2,350 miles in my van over a 21 day rental. While that may seem like a lot of driving, every day was a new scenic picture book of rugged mountains and glaciers, beautiful coastline, pristine views back into fjords and back 14 LUXIERE

Hours of driving on “improved” dirt roads was quite thrilling at times with the wind, the mud and no-guard-rail edges that fell for hundreds of feet into the water. It was a top-five personal destination when I read about it six year ago in a travel blog. I drove 2.5 hours on dirt roads along some of the most twisty, muddy and wild shorelines, through Djupivik - a nearly ghost town remnant formed when a huge herring factory was built in 1935 and died five years later and it was raining and super windy on this remote trek. Upon arrival at dusk to Nordufjorder, both the gas station and cafe were closed, so on to the pool. Parking was amongst active hot springs and geysers, the path down the hill leads to the oasis. It was a 104° Fahrenheit swimming pool, built into the hillside, overlooking the rocky beach and ocean just miles from the Arctic Circle. It was everything I expected and better. I loved Iceland for so many reasons, so much that I’m already planning a return visit for 2018. It is an amazingly safe country with tourism in mind. They do a wonderful job promoting travel with numerous resources and an abundance of views and fresh air!!

The space is tiny. Intimate. Beautiful. Nestled on the north side of Nichols Hills Plaza, the neighborhood bistro has become an instant classic, at once elegant and relaxed, upscale and comfortable, which was precisely the goal, according to Drew Tekell, co-owner and director of operations and Jonathon Stranger, co-owner and chef.

It’s an atmosphere designed in part to pay homage to the St. Mark’s namesake, Tekell’s father Mark. The Cordon Bleu-trained Tekell explains: “I moved back to Oklahoma because my dad was sick. He had cancer, and died not long after I’d made it back. In many ways, all of this happened because of him. My dad was a laid-back golfer. He liked the comfortable feeling of the country club, but not the airs. St. Mark’s is everything he loved, and you’ll feel comfortable here whether you’re dressed up for a date or watching a game at the bar in khakis.” When the concept for St. Mark’s began to solidify, Stranger knew one thing for sure. “Our steaks had to come from Ted Davis. He produces exceptional Waygu beef, and was one of the first to import a Japanese Black bull, in the 1980s. His beef is such high-grade Waygu that he has exported it to Japan for years, and Europe.” When the men talk about making a meal of one of Ted Davis’s Waygu rib eyes, it’s with the fervor of usually Both men embarked on culinary odysseys across the

SAFETY, EDUCATION & TRAINING WILSHIRE GUN

story: Christine Eddington / photography: Steve Voelker

Inside the imposing façade, in an otherwise demure strip of businesses along Wilshire Boulevard a few blocks east of North Western Avenue, is perhaps the most unique, multi-purpose shooting, safety and entertainment facilities in the country. It is the collaborative effort of a group of businesses housed within, and it has become a destination for marksmen, hunters, SWAT teams in training, companies looking for team-building experiences, and couples looking for a unique date night. Wilshire Gun actually houses three unique business entities, which operate together seamlessly to provide a safe, fun, engaging customer experience. It’s a compassionate, dedicated team, with the common goal of offering great food and drinks, entertainment, second-to-none gun sales and education, and a variety of shooting range options, while constantly teaching and modeling safety and respect. Tyler Miller has been a part of Wilshire Gun since its inception, and is now its general manager. Javier Leclerc and Sam Barnett own and operate the Caliber Club and Range Café inside Wilshire Gun. Steve Hazelwood owns the highly-regulated Oklahoma Machine Guns, whose showroom is inhabited by perhaps the largest and gentlest German shepherd on record, Thor. The Range Café is just inside the entrance, and guests are welcome whether shooting or not. “We do a heavy lunch business, usually a couple hundred people, from businesses located nearby. Our food is scratch-made, delicious, elevated comfort food, and most of our 30 menu items are on the table in ten minutes. We have weekly specials, amazing burgers and we’ll start offering our venison chili next week,” Barnett says. Barnett is an experienced restaurateur, whose endeavors include the successful Twin Peaks restaurants in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The Gun Fitting program gives women (or men) the opportunity to test, hold and fire multiple weapons until they find the one that fits them best, reminiscent of Harry Potter finding his wand. There’s an important caveat, which makes all the difference. “Usually, when a woman comes in to buy a gun, a male is with her. And as males, we tend to try to take charge of the experience. So what we do is, we tell the husband or father, or whoever he is that his services are no longer required, and we work one-on-one with each women until she feels comfortable on her own terms,” Miller says. He takes pains to make Wilshire Gun as inclusive as possible, and he walks the walk. “The gun industry hasn’t embraced women, historically. It’s been hampered by old white guys who don’t want to change. Our owners were inspired by the idea of an upscale ‘guntry club,’ meaning a beautiful, safe, clean place for gun enthusiasts or people new to guns to learn and enjoy themselves,” Miller says. “With every right comes an equal responsibility. LAURA FLEET SendaRide

story: Sherry Dale, Partner - The Mettise Group

What is SendaRide and how did it start? The transportation barrier – a significant hurdle to accessing health care. Annually, seven million people do not receive medical care because they don’t have transportation to the hospital or doctor’s office. In addition, 43 million Americans care for a non-driving senior. I co-founded SendaRide in 2016 to provide non-emergency medical transportation. As a healthcare attorney for over 20 years, I designed SendaRide for the health care industry with HIPAA compliant technology, understanding of the complexities of the regulatory environment and security features protecting the patients and providers. SendaRide provides the technology to allow a hospital, provider, health plan, independent living center or family member to book on-demand or scheduled transportation for someone who cannot do so themselves. We have a network of drivers that provide a concierge service for our riders. The drivers greet the rider/patient at their door – or hospital room – and escort them to their car. They also escort the rider safely inside their destination. Our drivers go above and beyond every day, making sure each rider feels safe and comfortable during their ride. While the medical community uses our web-based client portal to schedule their transportation our individual customers use our App. We also recognized a significant need, based on our own experiences, for families to enable their loved ones to have safe transportation when they may be unavailable. Whether their children need a ride from school to extra-curricular activities or their elderly parents want to maintain their independence even though they are no longer driving, we provide a safe, affordable solution. Our customers select their driver rather than having one assigned to them. Through the app the customer can “share” all of the ride details with anyone they choose. They can share it with the rider so they know exactly who is coming to pick them up, what they look like, what their car looks like and their license plate. They can send the details to their spouse or even their child’s school. Our most convincing safety feature by far is the ability for family members to activate the real-time audio/video inside the car and interact with the passenger during the ride. What are the growth plans for SendaRide? We are currently contracting with hospitals, providers and health plans in Oklahoma City and Tulsa with plans to expand outside the state beginning in early 2018. The medical community has not had a customizable, affordable

34 LUXIERE

non-emergency medical transportation solution before that also ensures they are compliant with the complex framework of privacy laws and regulations governing the health care industry. Once we introduce our features to hospitals and providers they are genuinely delighted and relieved to have a viable solution. Our growth is limited only by how quickly we can present our solution to the health care industry! Who is your ideal customer? We have two ideal customers: individuals and businesses. We have found a tremendous interest in SendaRide by individuals that are trying to manage a busy career and their family’s complex schedules. Many times, their children are going in different directions – and at different times – to sports, tutoring, music or dance lessons, etc. It is so difficult to ensure each child has the same opportunities when a parent is stretched in several directions. SendaRide allows the parents to manage their children’s transportation needs so they can experience life. The “sandwich generation” is also an ideal customer for SendaRide. Many of our aging parents are non-driving seniors - but adamantly want to maintain their independence. It is very difficult to take our parent’s keys away. Having a viable alternative like SendaRide allows our parents to maintain their lifestyle with dignity and independence. For those of us with elderly parents that are in declining health, the multitude of doctors’ appointments can become overwhelming. This, too, is an opportunity for SendaRide to alleviate the stress of leaving the office to escort your parent to a medical appointment. Lastly, providers, clinics and hospitals are also great partners for SendaRide. The medical community has not had a safe, efficient, affordable transportation provider that will not only bring their patients home from the hospital – but also make sure their patients can get to their appointments. Medical providers strive to keep their patients happy and healthy and integral to those two goals is the ability for patients to receive preventative care, follow-up care and therapies. What do you love about what you do? I have always been a “problem solver”. As an attorney and lobbyist, I have been able to tap into that talent for my clients. SendaRide has allowed me to solve problems on a much bigger scale. It is incredibly rewarding to know you created a company that is changing so many lives for the better.

SPOTLIGHT

Describe your recent experience at the Women’s Start Up Lab. The Women’s Startup Lab is a life-changing opportunity granted to just twelve women from around the world. I was fortunate enough to be included as one of those women in Silicon Valley this summer. The lab is an intense, handson accelerator course that introduces female founders to the best of the best in Silicon Valley. We toured and learned from the founders and executives at companies like AirBnB, Evernote, LinkedIn, Apple, Match.com, Honest Company, NatureBox and Caring.com. We were paired with an Advisor from one of these companies or a Venture Fund to help us prepare our company for meetings with investors and navigate the complex ecosystem that is “Silicon Valley”. The intense pressure of the course builds over two weeks and culminates in a “pitch event” the last day where each female founder is given 3 minutes on stage to pitch her company to over a hundred investors and then answer questions from professional panelists. It was definitely one of those “sliding-door” moments that forever changes the direction your life takes. What advice would you give to a start up entrepreneur? If you aren’t invested 100% don’t expect anyone else to be either. Secondly, surround yourself with people smarter than you are. I have learned so much from those entrepreneurs who have gone before me. It is incredible how willing people are to be honest about what they did wrong and guide you in the right direction if you just ask.

Third, take advantage of companies that are designed to help entrepreneurs. For example, some attorneys will defer a portion of their legal costs for startups until they have received funding from investors. In addition, companies like The Mettise Group offer a one-stop source for most, if not all, of the critical functions you will need help with until you can hire full-time staff. I was able to contract with The Mettise group to provide CFO, Human Resources, Strategy and Operational resources. There is no way I would have been able to afford each of these individuals on their own but they are critical when expanding and explaining to investors who your team includes. The Mettise Group gives entrepreneurs the necessary clout, confidence and capability to move forward. How has your life experience made you the leader you are today? At the Women’s Startup Lab I was asked to come up with one word that best described me. I chose resilient. Each one of us experiences circumstances in our lives that will break us or make us stronger. One of the precious liberties we each have is how we choose to respond to those circumstances. I have chosen throughout my life to find a way around any barrier put in front of me. It is interesting that my life path of breaking down barriers has led me to create a company that breaks down transportation barriers for others. What is your favorite quote? “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt

“I always admired how Coach Stoops connected with us. He could read the emotions of the team and had high awareness of each player’s skills and needs.” Auston English recalls a time when he and his teammates were enduring two-a-days in the heat. “It was grueling and taking a toll on morale. Stoops came in and said ‘You think these last drills were tough? We’re going to make you run!’ And you could hear the collective groan. He said ‘Everyone run and get on the bus – we’re going to the movies this afternoon. We were shocked and so relieved. Stoops had a way of reading us and knowing what each person needed – and he enjoyed playful pranks.” Auston has carried that example of flexibility, humor and teamwork into his new job. As a group leader of the Batterer’s Intervention Program for Family Builders, Auston’s job is to facilitate group dynamics, closely watching to see what each person needs. It’s not an easy group. The Batterer’s Intervention Program is a 52-week program to teach healthy relationship skills to people who have been guilty of domestic violence and abuse, usually inflicted on the people closest to them.

Auston’s own father went through a significant transformation when Auston was young. His father was raised by brothers and sisters in a tough environment. When he had his own children, he hadn’t learned the parenting skills to balance a career as a missionary in the field, a young marriage and children to support. “My dad admitted that he didn’t get everything right, that he would go back and change things if he could. But he worked very hard to overcome those early struggles. He sought help and spent a lot of time “I see these guys change over the weeks and months,” says English.

A WES ANDERSON H O L I DAY Beyond the ivy-clad bricks of a once familiar home, a brief dalliance with the past awaits a young couple. A party. A weekend fĂŞte; standard dinner party cacophony. Amid the clatter of conversation and porcelain, the young couple remains poised, in a playfully silent dialogue all their own. They are resplendent in their own quirky majesty, their style approached with a keen eye for detail and an open mind. Suit yourself serenely or snugly, and approach accessorizing with a healthy a dose of almost-awkward as you dilly-dally through the holidays, ready for dinner and cocktails with friends, a midnight service, or caroling en masse. This style is equal parts approachable and elegant.
