FROM THE PUBLISHER It starts innocently enough…we chart a path through life, carving out a job and some security. Along the way we may start a family or pick up a hobby. We change or supplement daily routines with the occasional holiday, often planned, in the form of travel or vacations. Other times, stepping away from the charted course happens without planning — nothing more than a thoughtless variation from our daily routine. Then, out of nowhere, one of these substitutions is special, whether we see it coming or not, and some spectacular something grabs hold of our mind, causing the release of endorphins that transforms the yearning to relive the experience into an irresistible craving that ignites our passions.

In this issue, we uncover some Oklahoma obsessions that play integral roles in the life Luxiere of our very own friends and neighbors. Perhaps a tour through these pages will uncover the very obsession you’ve been needing to spend some extra energy on. Stacy D. Johnson

Before we know it, our life’s path has merged with obsession, and the life we live is fused with an experience we’ve set to repeat forever.

PEELING BACK THE LAYERS: OBSESSIONS WE LOVE story MARIE NEALE

How many pairs of shoes do you have? Do they make you happy? How happy? For the purposes of this story, we will define obsession with the help of the illustrious 1980s musical group Animotion, whose hit song, “Obsession,” sums it up: I will have you Yes, I will have you I will find a way and I will have you Like a butterfly A wild butterfly I will collect you and capture you

Youth and Beauty, Shoes and Fashion: Let’s Talk About Those Youth is a national obsession and one Dr. Joan Hardt sees every day. In her experience it’s generally healthy. “Today we live longer, better-quality lives than our mothers and grandmothers, and we want to look the way we feel. And we feel like we’re about 30!” Hardt says. “We want to feel more congruent.”

Hardt, whose Rejuvena Cosmetic Medical Center performs a wide variety of treatments ranging from Botox to Slim Lipo fat reduction treatments, has seen it all. “When someone has become obsessed about something in an unhealthy way, it’s usually about something only they see, something very hard for anyone else to notice. They’ll point out something tiny over and over again.” Botox can also be a slippery slope, Hardt says. She suggests a gradual approach. “People have one area done, and then they want another. Which might be fine, but making gradual changes over a period of time is a way to make sure you don’t look overdone.” Her own constant focus is making her patients happy. “I’m not sure our obsession with youth and beauty is good, but what is good is that what I do makes people feel better. It improves their mood, brings them pleasure and boosts their self-esteem.” Barbara Jansen, shoe, hosiery and apparel buyer at Balliet’s, is another woman who has seen more than her share of obsession. She confesses that she’s a bit obsessed herself. Shoes. “If you ask my husband, he’d say I am obsessed. I say that I buy shoes emotionally. They are artwork to me. I am a strategic buyer, and I tend to buy things that I don’t already have.” But what is the deal with women and shoes? “I’ve given this a lot of thought,” Jansen says. “There are several factors.

Women seek self-confidence and shoes are confidence you can see. There’s also, I’ve read, a dopamine release when we buy a great pair of shoes, and third, women collect shoes. They’re always on the hunt for what they don’t have. The thrill of the hunt can be emotional. And shoes don’t discriminate as much as clothing does.” For those on the hunt at this moment, Jansen says that shoes that lace up around the ankle are of the moment, particularly those by Aquazzura. Double particularly Aquazzura’s Wild Thing. “Balliet’s bought one size-run of the Wild Thing,” Jansen confirms. That means one pair in each size, ladies, so reserve yours now. It’s a shoe the whole world is obsessed with right now. When it comes to clothing, Lucas Westendorf, general manager at Classen Curve’s Q Clothier whole-heartedly embraces attention to detail. “I obsess over chambray and denim shirts. Right now there are twelve in my collection. I wear a three piece suit every day with jeans, and pairing this combo with a chambray shirt is an ideal match for me based upon color, texture and my personal style.”

He encourages others to become educated as well. “People should be completely obsessed with fit, function and consistency. Fit is the most important aspect in buying clothes. I have been known to tell customers that I would NOT sell them a piece because it did not fit them. Function is the root of style. It tells us what an item is used for. I prefer to educate my clients on which designer you’re wearing, what you’re wearing, when to wear it, where to wear it, why you’re wearing it and

how it’ll perform for you. Consistency is the absence of contradiction. It’s the glue that brings fit and function together.” While a clothing fixation may seem frivolous, Westendorf assures us that it is not. “We get three seconds to make a first impression. During those three seconds everything is based on what you look like. How much can you say about yourself to stranger in that time? Also, we cover 90 percent of our bodies with the clothing of our choice. From this, we all have the power to influence how society sees us based on how we present ourselves.”

Iconic American author and social arbiter, Mark Twain, wrote, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” Data suggests American buying patterns support this assertion. In the United States, we buy more than 2.3 million pairs of shoes each year. In 2013 we spent $251 billion on apparel and $1.15 billion on anti-aging skin care products, according to statista.com. Suffice it to say that we love what we love –  a lot. To quote another American icon, Oscar Wilde, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.”

Ginger is an perennial reed-like plant that produces white and pink flower buds. It grows chiefly in India, but is also found in China, Nepal, Indonesia and Nigeria. When the stalk withers the root, or rhizome, it is harvested for its characteristic hot, fragrant flavor profile. Ginger also has holistic properties and can be used to treat mild nausea.

GINGER, MY SPICY DARLING story MELANIE W ILDER MAN | photo DOMINIK MARTIN

Suffice it to say that if I had to choose between Mary Ann and Ginger, I’m unequivocally Team Ginger. I can’t stop thinking about ginger in all its splendid forms. When it comes to food and drink, ginger is often relegated to the holiday season (think Starbucks’ gingerbread latte), but there is every reason to elevate its status in your gastronomical adventures. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, allow me to present exhibit A: The Moscow Mule. A drink usually made of ginger beer, vodka and a twist of lime, orginated in the 1930s, the Mule has made quite a comeback. Norman’s BlackBird GastroPub dedicates an entire page of its drink menu to a variety of Mules, including my current libation fixation, the Fruity Mule, a heady mix of ginger beer, vodka and champagne. While we’re on the subject of cocktails, who doesn’t love a well-sugared (or salted) rim for added drama and decadence? Up your next cocktail’s sophistication level by making your

own crystalized ginger and sugar mixture. Pulse the candied ginger and sugar in a food processor for a few, then enjoy. Tea? Totally. When I’m not in the mood for a cocktail, or if it’s the middle of the day, I’ve found gingerlemon tea strikes a perfect balance of energizing and soothing. It’s delicious served hot or iced with a dab of agave nectar. You’ll find an array of offerings from Twinings, Celestial, Yogi Tea and Bigelow but I recommend the blend offered by Stash. It’s got panache.

The health benefits of ginger root have been documented for thousands of years. It can aid in digestion and is an oft-used remedy for nausea. For these purposes, our dear Ginger is available in a dietary supplement pill form, which may be found on amazon. com and usually in most grocery and health-food stores. It’s true. I have ginger-mania. I’m a ginger-phile. And if this is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Nothing goes better with a brisk cup of tea than a crumbly, buttery scone. Gray Owl Coffee’s rendition is a celebration of ginger and peach. Jenny Vigil, one of the bakers at the Norman coffee shop, plies her fragrant craft daily, and also bakes up lemon-ginger scones and a ginger-molasses cookies. Tulsa’s Chimera Café also offers a variety of ginger-tinged scones.

GOLD PLATED Guilty Pleasure Meets Sanity Saver story MELANIE W ILDER MAN | phtography ALEXIS AUSTIN, SOPHOTO

In a perfection-obsessed society, people put undue stress on themselves, striving for either inner or outer perfection, or both. We know that fueling our bodies with fresh, beautifully-crafted meals will help us to look as healthy as we feel. But, frankly, who has the time? Joanna Gold was in the restaurant business for 13 years in nearly every capacity, from dishwasher to chef. She is adept at presenting her family with a beautiful, healthy meal on the table, easily managing her kitchen and the grocery list for her family of four. The good news? She’ll do it for you, too. “Some people feel guilty for hiring a chef service. People think they should want to do their own cooking, even if they hate it. We all have our things. Don’t feel guilty about it,” Gold said, as she expertly cored a pineapple with the steady hands of a surgeon.

That is where her business, Gold Plated, comes in. The personalized, in-home culinary service was launched three years ago and offers weekly grocery and food preparation, culinary coaching, and personalized health awareness planning. Gold and her staff also offer services for private parties, but she is careful to explain they are not a catering service.

Gold Plated keeps a dossier on each client with detailed information on the individual or family, their food likes and dislikes, allergies, dietary goals, and staples they prefer.

With a slight accent from her native New Jersey, tempered by a healthy infusion of Oklahoma-style enunciation, Gold clarified that a catering service is hired by one person or company to

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

IN THE HERE AND VOW: Q&A WITH VISIONARY OKLAHOMA WOMEN PRESIDENT Women of Influence: Lolly Anderson story MELANIE W ILDER MAN | photography SHEVAUN W ILLIAMS styling DANIELLE KEOGH, LIBERTÉ | makeup SHARON TABB

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” – Ernest Hemingway Laurel “Lolly” Anderson’s path thus far has taken her to multiple cities, through a handful of career paths, passions, and relationships and has deposited her, happily, right where we found her, which is to say on her porch in Lake Aluma. She has practiced law, beat cancer (twice!), and crushed goals that others told her, quite frankly, would never happen. She has loved and lost and loved again. As founder and president of Visionary Oklahoma Women (VOW), she and about 50 members are on an excursion together to embrace and encourage creativity and improve lives. Seven years ago, after hosting a fundraiser for a film on creativity in Oklahoma, the idea for VOW materialized in a conversation on her front porch steps. Lolly, along with her mother Betty Catching, and Judy Hatfield (the VOW co-founder triumvirate) began to brainstorm. “A film credit required a $25,000 donation, so, we thought if you have 25 women and they throw in $1,000 each, there’s your credit,” Lolly said. The initial name tossed out for this group was Creative Oklahoma Women, but as the trio laughed at the notion of

16 LUXIERE

becoming members of COW, Betty (always a force and role model in Lolly’s life) stepped in with “Visionary Oklahoma Women,” and the nonprofit organization with a goal of finding “creative solutions to improve quality of life for others” was born. Since inception, the group has supported organizations such as Allied Arts, Harding Fine Arts Academy, Homeless Alliance, OK School of Science and Mathematics, Positive Tomorrows, Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and Teen Recovery Solutions. Through their annual membership costs and additional member donations, VOW is able to support their chosen causes, but the organization goes further than simply collecting donations. “VOW is a group of women who support one another,” Lolly said. VOW member, Robyn Fain, was involved with Dress for Success, so the group came together to support the organization, which helps women gain access to business attire and tools for success in the workplace. “We not only give directly to transformative organizations, we support activities our members are involved in,” Lolly said. “We are leveraging the influence of our VOW members.” What makes the divine Ms. Lolly tick? Luxiere found out in a conversation at her lakefront home over a tea and cookies.

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Q&A Luxiere: Who are the VOW members? Lolly: Forty-eight women, mainly in the Oklahoma City area, all ages, conservative women, wild women…like me, younger ladies, all different professions, levels, interests. It’s all over the map. Luxiere: How did you arrive at the mission statement “to foster creativity that enhances global prosperity?” Lolly: It grew out of Creative Oklahoma, Inc. That first film we helped fund was on creativity in education. So, we had that creativity component from the beginning. We foster creativity. At first the wording said to foster creativity in Oklahoma, but one of our members originally from New York, Nola Miyasaki, said it sounded a little too provincial to just have Oklahoma. Nola said, global. And I said, well doesn’t that sound like a New Yorker! Luxiere: So you look for a creativity component in the organization you donate to? Lolly: We support wonderful organizations that are creative in what they do, and we also give to those who are tackling a problem in a creative way. Luxiere: You’ve got a fascinating background. What’s the nutshell version? Lolly: I’m an Air Force brat. Daddy was in the Air Force, so we moved around all over the place. From grades 4-11, we moved every year, I think. I spent most of my time in Virginia, but I have Oklahoma roots. My parents went to Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and then Daddy went into the Air Force. And since both sets of my grandparents were there, every Christmas, wherever we were, we would drive, usually all night, to Tulsa. So we always had a Tulsa home base. Luxiere: What about college? Lolly: I went to Mary Baldwin, a small women’s college. I went to Oxford in the summer, and then al of the sudden, it was over and I had no job or money. Daddy had taken his last assignment at Tinker Air Force base, and so I went to work at First National Bank in Midwest City. And I ended up getting married and going to law school, because my first husband didn’t want children. I put myself through Oklahoma City University School of Law. Luxiere: And what do you do with your freshly-minted juris doctor degree? Lolly: I dedicated myself to basically a decade of law. I did oil and gas law, I was a trial examiner… And I would look at my resume and think, it sounds good, but it does not feed me. My alma mater

So, I got into fundraising and development and started to feel like “this is me.” And then I went to the University of Virginia Law School Foundation in 1994, and it was the best job. And my idea there was to reserve the main corridor of the new law school and have the women fund it and name it. People told me, the women don’t have the money, and they won’t give it. Luxiere: Can we assume that you proved them wrong? Lolly: Well, yes. It’s the first space in the country named and funded in women’s names only. We brought in a million dollars, doubling our goal of $500,000. And, women were finally visible in this law school. That was probably the biggest feather in my cap. Luxiere: That’s one tough act to follow. What did you do after that? Lolly: Well, in Charlottesville, I wasn’t rich enough or young enough or married enough. And I got a call from a headhunter at PBS, so I worked for them for three years. Then, my position was cut, and I went to the National Gallery of Art. But 18 LUXIERE

in 2002, I thought, I’m going back to Oklahoma. I love it here. You know, I’ve lived in the fancy places. This is the best place to live. The culture here is friendly. Luxiere: You said you’ve had two short marriages and one long marriage fail, and that you met your current husband Mike for the first time in 1978, but you married him in 2003. There has to be a story there. Lolly: Mike’s a retired minister of the Presbyterian church. Whenever I left Oklahoma, I would come back to his church when visiting my family. I used to order his sermons on tape and make all my friends listen to them. His wife died in 2001, from cancer. This was the same time I was cut from PBS. I was a breast cancer survivor, and had learned that I may have had a second form of cancer from the initial treatment. I thought, that’s great. I have no job and maybe another cancer. But God was just about to open a major door for both of us. I called the church in June, wanting some more of his sermons, and I learned about his wife’s death. I wanted to write a note to give my condolences, but the secretary, said no, give him a call. I told him the same thing I told everyone at the time, that if he was in D.C. to stop by the National Gallery of Art. So in October 2001, he visited the gallery, and I saw him walking in, and he’s in a short-sleeved shirt, and my first thought was you shouldn’t visit this museum in D.C. on a Sunday in a short-sleeved shirt, but my next thought was look at those arms. A year later we were engaged. Luxiere: So you suddenly have this new family, with children. Had you wanted children of your own? Was it a shock to your system? Lolly: I always wanted children! And now I have four stepdaughters and eight grandchildren. Luxiere: So, now that it’s been a while, what’s the family like? What are the gatherings like?

Lolly: Well, last year we had two Thanksgivings, 16 people Tuesday night, 16 people on Thursday night. I’ll show you the table Mike built—it’s 16-feet long— out on our veranda. So, 16 times two in a week. And it’s great. The grandchildren just get along so great [ages 9-19]. They’re like a swarm of bees. Mike and I cooked Tuesday night. We had tenderloin and salmon. I can do salmon now. My mother was there both times. Luxiere: Tell me about your mom, one of the original VOW members. Lolly: She’s 90, and she looks great! She is great and crazy, and a Republican! But she has voted for two Democrats for president. She worked as a secretary, at Goodwill, she worked for Prescott Bush in Washington, she went into real estate. She was my first honest-to-goodness role model. Luxiere: When I google you, your name is associated with a lot of events and parties. Would you call yourself a socialite? Lolly: I would never classify myself as that, because I have a development and fundraising background. Fundraising and development are of course, tied to events. But when I think of socialite, I think of a woman with lots of money. I put myself through law school, and I’ve worked my whole life, so that just doesn’t fit. When we host an event, when VOW hosts an event, it has a purpose. Partying with a purpose. And I’m all about that. We drink champagne and wine and have a great time, but we are always learning…and always giving. Lolly Anderson is a breast cancer survivor, a law school graduate, an author, a publisher, a fundraiser, a marketer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, an art aficionado, and currently says she even has some time to be an “old-fashioned house wife” who loves to sew and cook.

THE FORD GT “SUPERCAR” story BOB WARTERFIELD

Just how super is the new Ford GT? In January, the world’s largest showcase of emerging innovation (the CES), produced by the Consumer Technology Association named the Ford GT the Official Vehicle of CES 2016. In the words of Nicholas Cage, that’s high praise. Attributes that pushed the GT over the top were EcoBoost performance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fiber construction. Maybe you’ve seen the television ads with a group of children surrounding a new Ford GT. The message is spot-on. 20 LUXIERE

In the presence of the new GT, we all revert to a childlike mindset, standing in complete awe of a car so beautiful it’s as though the heavens have opened up and deposited a sleek UFO into our midst. Standing next to one, you might feel the atmosphere shift, as if the air has become rarified, perhaps charged by some exotic energy source. It’s the GT. It draws you closer, and you can’t help but imagine yourself behind the wheel. A younger, slimmer, smarter you, the you of your dreams.

It is easy to allow your mind to slip from inspiration to passion. The GT is cutting-edge technology borne from continuously evolving advancements flowing from Ford’s R&D magicians. According to Mark Fields, Ford president and chief executive officer, “... it’s worth remembering that our first innovation as a company was not in a laboratory, but on the racetrack.” The reference is to Henry Ford’s win of a 1901 car race that inspired financial backers to invest in his company. “We are passionate about innovation

through performance and creating vehicles that make people’s hearts pound.” In 1992, Ford began extensive research into weight reduction with advanced materials. Revealed in January of 2015, the Ford GT’s new design language is based on new materials allowing shapes that cannot be created from sheet metal. High-strength adhesives help bond carbon composites to aluminum allowing for unconventional solutions that enhance aerodynamics. Beginning production in late 2016, the GT hits the road in select global markets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new GT has a contemporary performance layout with rear-wheel

drive and a mid-mounted engine. It will be propelled by the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever: a next-generation twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with more than 600 horsepower. This new engine is based on the same race-proven engine architecture as that used in Ford IMSA Daytona Prototype endurance-racing efforts.

minimize drag and enhance downforce. Although each surface on the GT is functionally crafted to manage airflow, it also features fully active aerodynamic components to improve braking, handling and stability. An active rear spoiler is keyed to both speed and driver input, reactively deploying and adjusting its height and/or pitch angle depending on conditions.

The EcoBoost engine will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle for near-instantaneous gear changes and exceptional driver control. With the broad application of structural carbon fiber elements, the GT will exhibit one of the best powerto-weight ratios of any production car.

The state-of-the-art chassis is mated to an active racing-style torsion bar and pushrod suspension with adjustable ride height. The 20-inch wheels feature Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires constructed with a unique compound and structure designed specifically for the Ford GT. Multi-spoke wheels encircle carbon-ceramic brake discs at all four corners.

interior that provides advanced technology to ensure control, comfort and safety. The two-seat cockpit is accessed by upward-swinging doors and features driver and passenger seats integrated directly into the carbon fiber passenger cell. This configuration significantly reduces seating hardware and weight and provides a consistent and direct sensory connection to the chassis. The fixed seating is combined with adjustable pedals and steering column to accommodate a very wide range of driver statures. An F-1 style steering wheel integrates all necessary driver controls creating a stalkless steering column that allows uncluttered access to the transmission paddle-shift controls. A fully digital instrument cluster provides a wealth of driver-focused data. The display is configurable for multiple driving environments and different selectable driving modes such as Normal, Sport, Track, and Wet. Each setting defines how systems perform so the driver doesn’t have to. Functions such as engine throttle, traction control,

electronic stability control, suspension damping characteristics, active aerodynamics and ride height respond according to the drive mode chosen. The new Ford GT’s more than 50 sensors gather information about the performance of the car, the driver position and the external environment at the rate of over 100 GB of data per hour. More than 25 computing systems analyze the information gathered by the sensors at a rate of 10-million lines of computer code, or 300 MB of data processed every second. If – and when – you have the opportunity to sit in the driver’s (pilot’s) seat, you will find the new Ford GT is one of the most sophisticated, technologicallyadvanced vehicles you have ever driven. Everything from what the car is made of to the power plant, the electronic wizardry and cockpit amenities such as SYNC® 3 – the latest version of Ford’s connectivity system – are on a level somewhere beyond extraordinary.

DOES THE FED RAISING RATES MEAN I NEED TO LOCK IN MY HOME LOAN? story MELINDA OLBERT

The Fed raised rates in December. Does that mean mortgage rates are going up? The short answer is “No.” Just because the fed raised rates doesn’t necessarily mean you need to lock in your mortgage rate. When the Fed “raises rates,” it is not raising the interest rate you pay on loans. It’s raising the rates that banks pay when they borrow from the Federal Reserve or are paid when they leave money at the Federal Reserve. This rate affects you by influencing how willing the banks are to lend money. If the Federal Reserve pays too much interest on bank reserves, they won’t want to make loans. Your home loan is more closely tied to the 10-year treasury rate. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate moves in the same direction as the 10-year treasury rate about 95 percent of the time. The rate on the 30-year mortgage is usually around 1.7 percent higher than the 10-year treasury rate in normal economic conditions. The difference between the two rates is called “the spread.’’ The spread can be higher when higher risk is perceived. In 2008, the spread reached its all-time high of 3.27 percent. At that time, treasury rates fell to all-time lows due to government intervention, while lenders feared excess

risk in the mortgage market. Things like recessions can make lenders think there is more risk and consequently borrowers will not be able to make timely payments on their mortgages. Things like falling home prices can make lenders feel there is heightened risk that people will stop paying their mortgage and force the bank to repossess the home. Rates can vary for individuals. For example, the spread will be higher for borrowers with lower credit scores. Historically, the changes in the spread have been relatively small. That makes watching the 10-year treasury a reliable way for a potential homebuyer to know when it is a good time to take out a mortgage. If you want to see what 30-year mortgage rates have been in the past, you can view them at http://www.freddiemac.com/pmms/pmms30.htm. That may help you determine whether current rates are where you need them to be to move forward with a mortgage. – Cameron Financial Strategies Your full-service financial planning firm 405.463.7952

Lorec’s skilled custom builder welds an industrial table base for a reclaimed table.

Lorec’s master upholsterer has been with the company for 16 years.

If you desire the rustic charm of ranch decor, without compromising the quality and craftsmanship of custom design, search no further than Lorec Ranch in Oklahoma City. Stepping into the furniture workshop at Lorec Ranch is like stepping into an era gone by, in which a dozen artisans and craftsmen are constructing and finishing beautiful furnishings of every description to their clients’ specific needs and desires. The artistry is impeccable and furniture designs are only limited by the imagination. One-of-a-kind embellished leathers and fine fabrics fill an entire room, with special orders, some gilded, are applied to a group of office chairs for one of the country’s largest oil conglomerates.

A few feet away, vintage reclaimed wood from the turn of the century is becoming an immense, round custom dining table that will be the gathering place for generations of the family who has commissioned it. The bustling atmosphere literally sparkles with energy as a craftsman whose expertise is in metal work ignites his torch to put the finishing touches on a piece of wrought iron, destined for the base of a chair. Perhaps it will also be adorned with a length of hand-cut fringe. Anything is possible.

All of this occurs under the watchful eye of Lorec Ranch’s effervescent leader, Kari Lopez, whose family has been at the helm of the business since its creation in 1992. She and her team of designers and artisans have created everything from old-world designs to modern classics to rustic treasures and everything in between.
