FROM THE PUBLISHER Humans. We wake up every day and flit about this earth in pursuit of just about everything imaginable in an increasingly mechanized world. For most, the daily routine includes a series of interactions with inanimate objects: phones, coffee makers, televisions, cars, radios, office equipment, computers … magazines.
In this edition, we explore the relationship between human and horse — perhaps the single constant in a history that has seen the role of the horse change dramatically. A jaunt through these pages may have you changing the course of your Luxiere life.
While the multitude of great technological advances confer a near-infinite supply of options for personal satisfaction upon us, the alternatives for real-world socialization with our human peers are simultaneously decreasing — a fact lamented by parents to the great aggravation of teens everywhere.

Still lower on the totem of our social connections are the animals we steward and the histories we relate; if there was a time when families answered the call of the dinner bell at sunset, there was a time when every man, woman, and child had (or aspired to have) a horse to call his or her own.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE... story DAV ID LAWRENCE
Wild horses and pre-eighteenth century history notwithstanding, a simple internet search unveils an entire Oklahoma history of reliance upon the horse for every utilitarian function from settling the land to hauling the yearly harvest (alongside their cousins, the mules, of course).
show and racing industries. Today, with a horse population still hovering around 300,000, and the title of “most horses owned per capita in the United States, Oklahomans continue living a lifestyle that maintains the significance of horses in their culture.
Oklahoma horses were integral to the establishment of early Native American trade, and facilitated the life-sustaining pursuit of bison hunting among the Plains Tribes. Horses were (and continue to be) vital to ranchers and cowboys working cattle. In fact, until motorized vehicles and farming equipment became commonplace, horses and mules dominated the farming, ranching, and general transportation scene as the primary and indispensable asset.
Oklahoma is currently regarded as the center of the national horse industry. Nearly every breed association is represented, and the state hosts national and world-class competitions. The typical annual event schedule includes the International Arabian Horse Fair, the World Appaloosa Show, the World Paint Horse Show, the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, the National Reining Horse Association Championship, the Silver States Cutting Futurity, and a multitude of rodeo championship events. The Oklahoma Horse Industry Council monitors and promotes a nearly $4 billion dollar industry which supports approximately 33,000 jobs.
The advent of motorized transportation considerably altered the number of functions served by horses in Oklahoma, with World War I being the single most impactful event in shrinking Oklahoma’s head count. A resident population of nearly half a million horses and mules were significantly reduced after 1914, as Oklahoma sold or provided more than $10 million ($482 million today) worth to the U.S. Army and its European Allies. After the 1920s, the horse industry had evolved to celebrate the talents of horses in thriving

THE SPORT OF KINGS story CHRISTINE EDDINGTON
Kelly Coldiron’s polo career began four years ago when her daughters, and riding buddies, left home for college. “I attended a season-opener in May and I was hooked,” she said. Coldiron is a lifelong equestrian who toddled atop her first horse at two years old and never looked back. Today, she’s an avid amateur polo player, and is involved in the day-to-day operations of the OKC Polo Club. The club is based in Jones, which is about 15 minutes outside of the Oklahoma City metro. She and the club’s founder, David Ragland, a player with a 30-year career, are determined to see their sport take off in Oklahoma. “When I am playing polo I feel majestic. I love the competition, I love the adrenaline and the camaraderie and I love that it requires absolutely all of my attention when I’m playing. Everything else melts away and when I’m done I feel more energized and focused,” she said. The polo season is from May 1 to November 1, with Sunday matches open to spectators. “People tailgate, that’s the custom. Some clubs, particularly those back east, have dress codes but we don’t. People set up small tables and bring wine and food and enjoy the afternoon.” Matches start at 2 p.m., and the schedule and all you need to know can be found at okcpolo.com.
“Our oldest member, our founder David, is 74 and our youngest player in the club is 12. We have interscholastic-level play for 12-18 year olds and intercollegiate play for students ages 18 through college. We also have a women’s league.” Coldiron assures us that one needn’t be an established equestrian to learn the sport of polo. “We have lessons, and most people find that after ten lessons or so, they are ready to try a scrimmage. And they progress from there, based on what they want to do and how often they ride.” She recommends two lessons per week initially. Becoming a member of the club allows you to ride two additional times per week, and lessons are $100 each. The Club’s big event, the Horses and Heros Polo Classic, is slated for the end of September and funds raised benefit nonprofits that help those afflicted with PTSD. The season opener is May 1, and Coldiron invites us all to pack a picnic hamper and enjoy a Sunday afternoon polo match. Huzzah!

A Polo Primer: From Chukkers to Throw-ins Polo history: The sport of polo is documented as having been played as early as 500 B.C. by Persian noblemen. It was introduced to the West by the Indian Army, who shared it with 19TH century British cavalry officers. Polo Field: The outdoor polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, slightly larger than nine football fields and almost 10 acres in size, it is the largest field in organized sports. In addition to the field of play, there is an area beyond the side and end lines, known as the run off area, and incidents of the game which occur there are treated as though they were on the playing field.

THE DELICATE BALANCE OF WORK AND PLAY story MELANIE W ILDER MAN
Not many are able to combine a childhood passion with their grownup paycheck, but Rachel Ginter, a nationally competitive saddle-seat equestrian rider, has found that balance of professionalism and play. Rachel, an ad representative and assistant to the publisher at the specialty magazine Arabian Horse Times in Jordan, Minnesota, accepted this position after college, leaving her hometown of Oklahoma City. Inspired by her older cousin, this media professional started riding horses at age six and competing at age 10. The majority of that competition has been in the Country English Pleasure Division, riding Arabian or Half-Arabian horses. Rachel’s mother, Cathy O’Connor, said she knew what she was in for nearly 20 years ago observing young Rachel’s face at her cousin’s competition. “[Rachel] has always been nuts about the whole thing,” Cathy said. “She wanted to watch every event, see every horse that was for sale.” And since that time, Cathy has been her daughter’s most loyal supporter. “Now, I’m not allowed to give her any instructions in the ring,” Cathy half-joked. “But really, I’m her biggest cheerleader.”
14 LUXIERE
Cathy has never missed a show. Not even since her daughter moved to Minnesota. They still rendezvous wherever the shows take them all across the country.
Reminiscing on what drew her to the equestrian world, Rachel said it was partly the challenge, but partly just a love of animals in general, especially horses.
Rachel wouldn’t have it any other way. “I trust every horse I get on. Even if “Horses made us close, and kept me out I don’t know [the horse],” she said. “If of trouble. We both love it in different I let fear get in my head it can prohibit ways.” As the competitor, some of my riding, and I don’t want that. As single mother and not “independently wealthy,” Cathy said she has no regrets, despite sacrificing over the years. “The character it built for her, that’s what has been important to me,” Cathy said.
As a child, Rachel may not have had an exact answer for those adults who inquired of her future vocation. But now, along with more competitions to look forward to, she also has a profession in the industry she has adored since grammar school. And if she’s having a bad day, she can always take a lunch break and go for a quick ride where nothing else matters except a woman and her horse.

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE: KARI LOPEZ story CHRISTINE EDDINGTON photo DANIELLE KEOGH
She moves quickly, and she’s no bigger than a minute. Her name is Kari Lopez and she’s a delicatelyboned, classic American beauty, a glamourous girl next door … in elaborately-embellished cowboy boots, circumstances in her life that would have felled a lesser woman.
“I believe in having a spiritual outlook,” says Lopez, perched comfortably on a beautiful, custom-made, rustic dining chair in the middle of her massive furniture and décor store, LOREC Ranch. She cocks her head and the look in her eye becomes more focused, tougher somehow. “I also truly believe that with perseverance and tenacity we can overcome any obstacle that’s put in our way.” Lopez grew up in Milwaukee and in her earlier incarnation planned to become a doctor, and even earned an M.D. Love and life took her south of the border to sunny Mexico. She taught Spanish for a while at Northwestern State University in Alva, and she and her husband soon had four children. They left Mexico when the peso was devalued and opened LOREC Ranch in its first location, north of Oklahoma City.
18 LUXIERE
“Going into business felt natural,” she says. “My father and grandfather were both in real estate.” Business was good, and Lopez was happy. And then her life was torn apart. “My husband left and I became, all of the sudden, a single mom with four children and a business to run. I never would have thought that that would become my reality. But I didn’t have time to stop and cry. My maternal instinct pushed me forward. Having that happen to you will mold you into a fearless woman.” It also molded her into a woman who gives back to her community whenever she can. “We work with Serge Ibaka’s foundation. We offer tornado and fire victims a big discount to ensure that they can refurnish their homes after they’re rebuilt. We work with the Carver Center, which is an organization that helps people who have been in prison re-enter society. It’s a wonderful program, and that is where we found our warehouse manager.” Her largesse also extends to Oklahoma City’s Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, which all of her children have attended.
LOREC Ranch moved into the Reno Avenue furniture district in 2008, Lopez took over the business on her own in 2009, and she’s enlisted her sister, Mary Wick, to run the sales department. Her shop is full of custom-designed furniture, ranging from the rustic to the incrediblyrefined, but all with a unique, Southwestern flair. Lopez has made her way through some very dark and frightening days, and has managed to keep her sense of joy. She is an energetic, confident woman, who would give the shirt off her back to someone in need. Her four children are her pride and joy, and they range in age from 15 to 24. All of them value the lessons of charity their mother has instilled in them. Just before she pops out of her chair, having reached the limit of how long she can sit still, she speaks from the heart. “I hope that they have also learned to never give up, from watching me, to be fearless, and to give back — do those things and you are a success.” SPECIAL THANKS to the team behind the Women of Influence Campaign: Shevaun Williams, campaign photography Danielle Keogh of Liberté and Balliets, styling Sharon Tabb, hair and make-up Classen Curve, location

“The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.” – Nikola Tesla
Born July 10, 1856 in Croatia, Nikola Tesla moved to New York in 1884 to work for Thomas Edison. He overshadowed Edison when he demonstrated why his alternating current system was superior to Edison’s direct current system for generating and distributing electricity. Today, electricity is generated, transmitted and converted to mechanical power by means of his inventions everywhere on earth. Tesla’s greatest achievement is his polyphase alternating current system. He registered over 700 patents worldwide and his alternating current induction motor, the heart of the polyphase alternating current system, is considered one of the 10 greatest discoveries of all time. Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers in Silicon Valley who aspired to prove that electric cars could be better than gasolinepowered cars. With instant torque, incredible power, and zero emissions, Tesla’s products would be cars without compromise. Each new generation would be increasingly affordable, helping the company work towards its mission: to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transport. Honoring not only his name, Tesla Motor Company is also harnessing and adapting Nikola’s technological philosophy of utilizing electricity, a clean, efficient energy source in new and innovative ways. The timing is particularly insightful, especially when environmental concerns are increasing
and, in some areas of the world, evolving from bad to serious. Tesla’s engineers first designed a powertrain for a sports car built around the AC induction motor, patented in 1888 by Nikola Tesla. The resulting Tesla Roadster was launched in 2008. While the average car reaches 60 mph in six or more seconds, the Roadster accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and achieved a range of 245 miles per charge of its lithium ion battery. The Roadster set a new standard for electric mobility. In 2012, Tesla launched Model S, the world’s first premium electric sedan. The latest coming attraction from Tesla is the Model X, an exceptional crossover SUV that will become available in the latter half of 2016. How exceptional? There is a list of people who placed their order for a Model X more than two years ago. That list is growing steadily. Model X is the safest, quickest and most capable sport utility vehicle in history. It blends performance and utility with unique and innovative features. Model X hits 0 to 60 mph in a staggering 3.2 seconds getting to a top speed of 155 mph, all while producing zero emissions. With an active spoiler that automatically adjusts for maximum efficiency, Model X has the lowest drag coefficient of any SUV.
LUXIERE 21
LIFEST YLE & CULTURE
Built on the Tesla platform, the battery’s location on the floor gives Model X an extremely low center of gravity, reducing the risk of rollover. Without an engine, Model X has a crumple zone much larger than other SUVs to absorb the energy of a front-end impact. Together with standard active safety features, crash tests indicate that Model X will receive a 5-star safety rating in all categories, the first SUV ever to do so. Model X Falcon Wing doors offer unprecedented convenience, entry, and accessibility. With less space needed to open than the sliding door of a
minivan, the double-hinged doors make loading a child in the backseat in tight parking spaces simple. Why should the driver ever need to touch the door? Auto-presenting doors automatically open and close as the driver approaches or exits Model X. The windshield stretches up and over the two front seats so passengers can experience an open and modern feel with an expansive view ahead. There are three rows of seats, a front and rear trunk, room under the second row seats, side pockets, a center console and a blind holster for your iPhone. Big or little, there’s a place to store it
in Model X. For even heavier cargo, Model X is the first electric vehicle with a 5,000 lb. towing capacity. Model X is the world’s cleanest SUV on the inside. With a HEPA filter system, medical-grade air can fill the cabin, no matter what is going on outside. There are three modes: circulate with outside air, recirculate inside air and a bioweapon defense mode that creates positive pressure inside the cabin, literally pushing air from the inside out to protect occupants from external biological contaminants.

TESLA AUTOPILOT story BOB WARTERFIELD
Autopilot was designed to give drivers more confidence behind the wheel by adding a layer of safety, all while making highway driving more enjoyable and reducing the driver’s workload. While Model X can’t make traffic disappear, it can make it a lot easier, safer, and more pleasant to endure. Autopilot allows Model X to use a combination of cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors and navigation data to automatically steer down the highway, change lanes with the flick of a turn signal, and adjust speed in response to traffic.
Autosteer
Autosteer keeps the car in the current lane and engages Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to maintain the car’s speed. Using a variety of measures including steering angle, steering rate and speed to determine the appropriate operation Autosteer assists the driver on the road, making the driving experience easier. When using Autosteer on residential or undivided roads, speed is limited to 5 mph over the posted speed limit.
Auto Lane Change
Changing lanes when Autosteer is engaged is simple: engage the turn signal and Model X will move itself to the adjacent lane when it’s safe to do so.
Automatic Emergency Steering and SideCollision Warning
Side Collision Warning further enhances Model X’s active safety capabilities by sensing and alerting drivers to objects that are too close to the side of Model X. When the car detects an object close to its side, fluid lines will radiate from the Model X image in the Instrument Panel to alert the driver.
The instrument panel provides a visualization of the road as detected by the car’s sensors, giving drivers the information their car is using for features including lane departure, blind spot detection, speed assist, collision warning, adaptive cruise, and autosteer. Tesla’s autopilot feature is a hands-on experience, and drivers are expected to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain responsibility of the car. With Tesla’s over-theair software updates, Tesla can continue to improve and enhance Autopilot functionality.
Automatic HomeLink
HomeLink allows Model X to automatically open the owner’s garage door when they arrive home. As they approach their garage, the HomeLink control will appear in the touchscreen with a distance countdown to opening the garage door.
Summon
Summon enables Model X to drive itself in and out of the garage once you arrive home. Once prompted, Tesla will do the work for you: opening your garage door, entering/exiting your garage, parking itself, and shutting down. Summon also eliminates the burden of having to squeeze into and out of tight parking spots. Summon lays important groundwork for an increasingly autonomous world. One where the convenience and safety of transport vastly exceed what we are used to today. Autopilot began this process on the highways. Summon begins it in your garage. As the technology advances, the complementary capabilities of each will converge.
Autopark
Model X can parallel, and perpendicularly park itself, eliminating the need for drivers to worry about complex parking maneuvers. When driving at low speeds around cities, a “P” will appear on the Instrument Panel when the Tesla detects a parking spot. The Autopark guide will appear on the touchscreen along with the rear camera display, and, once activated, Autopark will begin to park itself by controlling steering and vehicle speed.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN– UNLEASH YOUR POWER story SHERRY DALE, METISSE
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one's attention to the experiences (internal and external) of the present moment — to a practice whose potency is derived from its simplicity. Mindfulness can be utilized as a reactive means of reducing stress and anxiety, or as a proactive means of improving thoughtful focus and productivity.
WHY?
Practicing mindfulness increases activity in parts of the prefrontal cortex, the seat of higher-order human thinking. Our planning, judgment, and decision making all take place here. Research has also demonstrated measurable changes in the brain regions linked to memory, self-awareness, stress and empathy in persons who practice mindfulness.
C A N I B E N E F IT ? The improved focus that arises from practicing meditation and mindfulness could prove to be a critical reward for modern leaders. Due to our always-on digital lives, even the best leader’s attention is constantly divided. A mindfulness practitioner can resist endlessly reacting to his or her inbox, and take ownership of a meaningful agenda.
P R OV E IT.
General Mills, Aetna, Apple, Google, SalesForce, Etsy, Goldman Sachs and other large companies are investing in mindfulness training for their employees with positive results. Documented cost savings, and improved employee time management, productivity and ability to handle workloads are among the derived benefits.
TA K E AWAY —
Practicing mindfulness can change us from the inside out. From improved concentration to more effective leadership, we can transform the exhausted, stressed and uninspired person into a resilient, focused and productive individual.
Local entrepreneurial companies are also embracing mindfulness as a core business practice. Valerie Riley, founder and CEO of LifeSquire, remarks, “We don’t just incorporate mindfulness into our business, we build our entire model around it.”
