ell us about what you do as an entrepreneur. I connect people and help them build businesses. As the founder of Muses, I've built an entrepreneurs and freelancers network, where people meet potential business prospects, hire, and get hired for gigs. What is most unique about Muses? Muses harnesses the most talented digital and creative freelancers in the U.S. and beyond. We are Millennial talent who are passionate about everything we do. Our freelancers’ work speaks to the consumer demands of the digital and social media age.

To what or whom do you attribute your success? There are many, many people who have helped me along my journey. Of which, my husband has been my rock. He has seen all my ups and downs, the good, bad, and ugly, and always only has one consistent message for me, "keep going babe, you're doing great!" What is your longterm goal for Muses? The Gig Economy is 40% of the U.S. population and contributes to $1.4 trillion of the US economy annually. This figure is even greater in Europe. Most people I know either want to start their own business, have a side-hustle, or are already running their own businesses. Muses will be the goto place for global entrepreneurs and freelancers to grow and get hired to do what they are truly passionate about.


What is most important to you in your career? What's most important to me in my career has evolved through time, as do most things in life. At this moment, it is to stay true to who I am as an entrepreneur and not forget why I started Muses; to help others grow. I am a mentor at several startup hubs and women's organizations. I want the technology that my team builds to scale what I can do alone 10,000x faster and better. I believe that every entrepreneur, small business owner, and side-hustler deserves the opportunity to succeed in doing what they love. What is the biggest challenge you faced when creating your own business? To me, the biggest challenge is not a single event, but a consistent theme of removing obstacles and pushing forward. No matter how many milestones you've hit and how high you've climbed, some days you just lose momentum. It is especially difficult to push forward when you experience inevitable setbacks. Building and running a company is a huge mental battle with yourself, convincing yourself to keep moving, never staying stagnant. What is your brand mission? Our motto is "Do what you love with who you like". Speaking like a true Millennial, it's not just about working, it's about working on things you are passionate about with people you share the same values with. Talk us through what your typical day looks like. I work from 8am - 7pm, take a "real break" for dinner and resume from 9pm until I go to bed, which is around midnight. Approximately, 40% - 60% of my day consists of meetings, either in-person or over the phone.

You went from a job in the corporate world to creating your own company. What advice would you give to others wanting to start their own business? I would say two things: 1. Don't be afraid to pursue your dreams, even if it is doing it part-time. You've got to start somewhere. 2. Have a good financial plan and a backup plan, because things rarely go the way we want them to! How has owning your own business changed you as a person? It's changed me in more ways than anything else has. I’ve experienced so many things through building a company; from formulating new features, fund raising, building product, marketing, iterating, experimenting, falling down, getting back up, losing sleep, and repeat, the list goes on. It's helped me reflect on who I am and the personality traits that result in my actions, and ultimately impacting the company. Building and owning my business has not only taught me about startups and business, but also about how to be a better person, and ultimately a better version of myself. It's taught me to be patient, to listen MORE, and to be thankful for the opportunity to be on this journey. Issue 11 | 16

ell us about what you do as an entrepreneur. I’m involved in several firms which are now past the startup phase in Calgary. First and foremost, I am involved in a company called Argyle Fox. It is a middleware framework, which is a mature, industry tested platform that spans multiple sectors. I am heavily involved with this firm as a vice-president of corporate strategy and we are looking to scale in the next few months. Specifically, I am involved in the marketing of a module within this framework, which is a cloud-collaborative workflow, and integrated with Office 365. I consult corporate clients on how they can better leverage technology to digitally transform their business in the mid-market space. I come from a family of engineers. Engineers tend to be risk averse and it's that culture and influence that helped train me to mitigate risk and better navigate the startup and entrepreneurship space.

What is your favorite thing about being a global influencer? Having any level of influence over anyone is always something to handle responsibly. I’ve had opportunities to meet and connect with people all around the world. I like connecting with other women on their journey. There’s a certain level of solidarity we have as women, and I was greatly influenced by the women around me. My older sister was the first female engineer manager in her department. My mom was one of the very few women being educated in chemical engineering in the 1970’s. My grandma was a businesswoman and still managed to raise three successful children. My heart broke a while ago when I heard of a young girl with scoliosis. With the help of my family and community, I was able to use my platform as a global influencer and Miss Universe Canada to raise the funds needed for a life-saving surgery to correct her condition. That’s just one person helping another. I’m no exception, and other people can do similar things. Oh, and being on some of the most beautiful beaches, but looking at it through your phone (hahaha I’m joking). But seriously, only after I’ve captured the moment for the sake of content, then do I feel I can truly enjoy it in person and live in that moment.

Do you have any quotes or sayings that you live by? I have a number of favorite quotes: “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock” - Thomas Jefferson. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” - Proverbs 3:5-6 “They did not know it was impossible so they did it” - Mark Twain Why did you decide to start your career as a DJ? I’m a mezzo-soprano vocalist and musician at heart. I studied classical music under a dramatic soprano who studied at the Moscow Conservatory of Music and worked at an Opera house in Paris. I love how music brings people together. I grew up in a home where someone would always be playing the guitar or piano. Music moves people and can invoke deep emotions one can’t express in words. Walking into our home is like walking into a musical. Someone will say something and it will remind someone of a song lyric and before you know it, we are singing our conversations and dancing while doing chores. Also, when I was young, my cousin that I was very close with started deejaying at family parties. He had a natural gift and he saw success at some of the hottest clubs in my hometown. We planned on working together, but he was tragically killed a few weeks before his big debut at the age of 19. Issue 11 | 24


Being an advocate for women empowerment, in what ways have you been influential to the women that follow you?

As I have won titles such as Miss Universe Canada and Miss World Canada, naturally there are women who wish to follow in my footsteps and use these competitions as platforms to launch their own careers. Essentially what I love about competition is that it brings out the best in us. We are competitors one moment, and we are friends the next. If I were to do anything, I’d hope that someone can use what I’ve brought to bear as a benchmark. Also, I appreciate that these competitions support charitable causes that benefit children. Namely, Operation Smile, SOS Children’s Villages and Variety Children’s Charity. We are blessed as women, knowing we have value to contribute. You have your gifts that you and only you can bring to the world. No one can do it for you. If people try to discourage you, don’t listen. Take risks, don’t be fearful and don’t worry about what anyone thinks. I will continue to give the same advice: Go for it, with single-minded focus and tenacity. Don’t be afraid to be a pioneer.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Five years from now, there are several objectives and mandates we have in the firms I am involved in. At that point we hope to sell off much of our holdings and start something new. I plan to remain as an executive at these companies and by that point I will also have my own makeup line, act in TV and movies in the U.S., and will have also released much of the music I’ve been sitting on for a few years.

In what ways would you like to see your brand grow and change?

Talk about what a typical day in the life of Riza would be like.

I think as you get older, you become more nuanced in your views and thinking. You also hone your craft and yourself as you pursue mastery. What’s most important to me is that I am my authentic self in the public forum and I hope my brand continues to reflect that. I also hope to continue to improve my craft and find nuance in my artistic style. I am a bit of a perfectionist and one thing I always have a hard time with is putting things out there if I’m not one hundred percent satisfied with it. However, sometimes perfectionism is the enemy of revenue and iterative improvement, as I’ve learned in my life as an entrepreneur. It’s important to me to continue to expand and always be improving.

I don’t follow a particular routine. This season of my life is quite sporadic. When I am in Canada, I am typically at the office from 9-5 either working away at my computer or in meetings. Whenever I’m in Los Angeles, I am either attending meetings, at a modeling or acting job, or working on music. Regardless of which city I am in, I always make time for my family. I also like to meet friends for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks! It’s a bonus seeing friends over a good meal—I’m a big-time foodie.

What is your biggest piece of fashion advice? Accessories can really make an outfit. Personally, I like to collect shoes and most especially, handbags. I intentionally purchase classic pieces from brands such as Hermes, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. The value of classic bags from these brands continues to increase.

FUN FACTS ABOUT RIZA: Are you a planner or spontaneous? It depends what the occasion calls for. I have a very strategic mindset when it comes to matters that are serious or important to me. When it comes to matters that don’t require much evaluation, I like to be spontaneous and just go with the flow. What is your favorite beauty trend? My favourite beauty trend is Korean skincare. There has been a surge of Korean skincare products and their skincare routine (i.e. double cleansing and using toners, serums, and moisturizers) into the Western market and for good reason. There is such an emphasis on skin health and having beautiful skin sans makeup. What is your favorite place that you have traveled to? I love the Philippines. My parents grew up and met in the Philippines, so it’s a very meaningful country to me. The only thing more beautiful than the country itself is its people. Filipinos are kind and caring individuals, that love to accommodate and feed others! Who is your favorite musical artist? My favorite work in the anthology of Western Music is the Opera Carmen, written by French Composer Georges. This is of course natural as I’m a mezzo soprano. However, from pop culture, I’d list my favourite singers as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I would also list my current classical inspirations as Elina Garanca and Lara Fabian. I like the discipline of classical instruction, because from the formal academy, you can find your own nuanced style.

hat inspired you to become a female entrepreneur? The desire of entrepreneurship started at a young age. My parents had a business established. My father encouraged me to create my own path. I would be given tasks during the week such as, organizing his mail, filing paperwork, etc. I would then take my monthly allowance to purchase wholesale jewelry and host small day events. My mom would set up and then friends and neighbors would come over to shop and mingle in our living room. That's when my mentality started to shift. I knew I had the desire to create my own blue print. Years later, while studying journalism in college, I knew my love for entrepreneurship would not fade. I had the vision to create my platform from the talk show and extended it to what I knew best, hosting and creating a network for others. What do you want people to take away from WhitneyTalks? Take your passion to the next level. Utilize the resources you have daily. Connect with other individuals within your market, share ideas and build together. What is the hardest part about journalism? Writers block. Jotting down ideas and then crossing them out. Also, lack of inspiration and not feeling satisfied with your content or writing piece. I've learned that if you look at the cons before the pros, you'll find every excuse to not to start or keep going. How would you say WhitneyTalks has grown since its start in 2016?

The brand has grown drastically. Thank God for growth. As I've matured over the past years, so has my brand. I've stayed grounded to my authentic work and have established a system. When something doesn't feel right or gets passed, I’m at a better understanding that it wasn't the right fit for me.

What inspired you to become a young CEO and founder? My inspiration was my foundation at home. Exploring off to college, I knew there was so much more God had in store for me. After praying for guidance and direction while creating the brand, I knew I had to elevate to the next level. In what ways do you think that your brand has been an inspiration to other young women? With the assistance of social media, I've been transparent and relatable in such a way that young women have been influenced by my journey. The authentic process of building, creating, and connecting within your network. They too, are inspired to go after their passion. Where do you see WhitneyTalks in the next five years? Within the next few years, I envision my brand to be known and utilized globally. Offices on the East and West coast would be beneficial as well. What is the ultimate goal for your brand? To construct a platform for the up and coming in the industry. Building, connecting, and growing individuals together. Who in the industry would you love to interview? hat inspired you to become a female entrepreneur?

I wanted to make more money; Corporate wasn't paying me enough for the 60 or so hours I was putting in! How did the name "Ladies Who Brunch: Atlanta" come about? Two things women love - the city of Atlanta and brunch. It was an easy name to come to and we both agreed on it. What is the hardest part about planning large events? Catering! It's always scary to depend on someone to completely do more than what's needed for food! That makes or breaks any event.

How would you say that social media has helped you from a business perspective? Allows us to connect with a variety of people from all over the world. How would you describe your company to people who don't know about it? A connection and community of female entrepreneurs wanting to work together over a cold glass of RosĂŠ and brunch.

How do you think your brand has helped women in their own entrepreneurial endeavors? It's very educational, we bring in seasoned speakers and people who have the #receipts. They teach action steps that propel business owners forward and we also share the knowledge we've gained over time. In what ways do you embody the fundamentals of the Ladies Who Brunch company? I am very giving in what I know - I don't have my hand out awaiting payment for my knowledge. I still remember the nervous feeling I felt investing $500.00 into something I was not 100% positive about. What is the ultimate goal for your brand? My ultimate goal is to become a personal launch strategist (similar to a business strategist) for entrepreneurs - helping them create the launch blueprints of their business ideas in order to be profitable and connect them with the experts in my personal community. What is are you most excited about for your upcoming "Toast To Summer '19" event? Meeting all of the women in attendance and seeing the "ah ha" moments from what is shared from our speakers. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE WITH A TASTE OF MERIL THIS SUMMER By: Angela Brickley

Photography: Anne Menke Everyone should know the famous chef Emeril Lagasse, who is also a restauranteur, television personality, and author. We had the opportunity to visit one of his New Orleans restaurants called Meril. Meril is tucked away in the quickly developing and bustling, Central Business District, in New Orleans, and that was just the vibe that we were looking forward to. As we walked in for dinner, the restaurant was packed on a Friday night, which came as no surprise. After sitting, we were immediately greeted with a professional waiter who answered questions we had regarding the menu. Let me just say, the cocktail drinks were amazing. We had the opportunity to try a variety of items off of the menu, and our favorite starter was the pineapple upside-down cornbread with bacon marmalade. Everything that we ordered had a flavorful kick to it and was perfect, especially after landing from the airport. If you are planning to visit New Orleans, we highly recommend checking out Meril's.
