PUBLISHER’S NOTE

TICKET FOR ONE, TABLE FOR ONE

I

n light of the fact that this is our annual Destinations issue, I decided to share my personal experiences with traveling alone. I’ve often wondered why so many of us wait to travel until we have someone to accompany us. There have been times in my life when I held off on visiting a certain place because I didn’t have a significant other or I couldn’t align my schedule with friends. It wasn’t that I was afraid to be alone—I have RSVP’d for one, have dined at a table for one and have even gone to movies by myself. With my busy work life, I actually enjoy the peace I feel being with myself. It was more the thought of traveling alone than being alone that was scary. With that said, as a person who tries to seize the moment and conquer my fears, a few years ago, I decided to squash them and travel solo! My first experience traveling alone was for a few days to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where I stayed at the magical Mahekal Beach Resort. I took morning walks along the beach, basked in the sun poolside and made a trip to the spa daily. At night, I watched the sunset while enjoying a fabulous meal, wine and a book. My favorite part was when I realized I was comfortable enough in my own skin to sit confidently on the beach under a tent surrounded by candles with a private server assisting my every need. It was an empowering experience to sit there while people walked by staring and wondering who I was and why I was alone. After having such a great experience in Mexico, I thought that traveling to Germany alone would feel like I accomplished climbing Mount Everest! Needless to say, the experience wasn’t quite as enjoyable. Germany is a beautiful country and it was an incredible experience, but taking a solo trip for a few days to a nice resort is entirely different from traveling abroad for a week, going city to city, and not knowing the language or the transit system. The decision to travel alone is a personal preference. I would do a short trip again, but traveling alone for an extended amount of time just wasn’t for me. At the end of the day, memories are much more fun when they are shared. Discovering yourself is a beautiful thing. But you won’t truly know your limits until you have the courage to step outside of your comfort zone. I have no regrets—only experiences. My advice is that you should try to live your life in this same manner.

LYNETTE’S LESSONS FOR TRAVELING ALONE If you have the opportunity to give solo traveling a try, here are a few of my suggestions: START SHORT.

Travel for a just few days at first, preferably to a place where you know the language.

PLAN ACCOMMODATIONS AND TRANSPORTATION. Travel should be stress-free. The freedom I hoped to achieve by going to Germany without a “plan” backfired. If you want to be spontaneous, at least have your transportation and hotels lined up in areas you know are safe.

CONFIRM COMMUNICATION.

If traveling abroad, make sure your cellphone provider works in the country you are visiting. I thought mine did, but I had several issues when I arrived. And be sure you sign up for international usage or your phone bill could get out of control.

LESS IS MORE.

I tried to fit too many cities into my trip, which meant I spent a lot of time traveling rather than just being in one place and enjoying the moment. Plus, it added stress because I was always worried about how I was going to get to my next destination in a country where I couldn’t understand the signs.

PACK LIGHT. Ladies, if you want to achieve different Lynette Janac Publisher/CEO

wo years ago, for our annual Destinations issue, I wrote about “travel envy”—that pang of jealousy we feel when we see and hear about others around us traveling the globe, visiting new cities, immersing in foreign cultures and relaxing on beaches with waters so blue, we stop and wonder what Instagram filter they are using. Well, there is no time like the present: It’s time to start planning! In the pages of our “Travel Your Way” feature (page 45), we present some of the world’s best destinations for all types of travel, whether you want to be exploring tropical islands, racing down ski slopes, unwinding at luxurious spas, indulging in gourmet delicacies, perfecting your golf game or discovering new fashion trends. Of course, living in South Florida has its benefits: We live in a place where people from all over come to vacation. If time does not allow you to travel far this summer, we suggest at least treating yourself to a mini staycation. In “Staycation Bliss” (page 59), we highlight some of our favorite tried-and-true South Florida resorts, as well as a few new properties to the scene that are already establishing a loyal local following. This issue also includes our annual Beauty and Wellness special feature (page 73), where we’ve tapped some of the industry’s top experts for tips and tricks on ways to look and feel your best this summer—and year-round.

WELCOME TO MIAMI Italian, Japanese, Mexican and more: A slew of new restaurants are finding their way to Miami this season. Here, we present some of our favorites. BY BECKY RANDEL

Mandrake entrance Mandrake’s Pork Belly

THE MANDRAKE SHAKE Filling the expansive 5,000-square-foot location that was previously Klima is Mandrake, a new restaurantlounge from the owners of Kiki on the River. Through the turquoise front doors adorned with antique Chinese door knockers, you’ll find a colorful space replete with a sushi bar (helmed by Nobu alums), a formal dining room, a lush outdoor garden patio and a life-sized golden gorilla. Must-try dishes include the slow-cooked pork belly with achara sauce, any of the dumplings and the whole fish tempura in a sweet and sour ginger-scallion sauce. 210 23rd St., Miami

BRICKELL’S NEW HOT SPOT Mary Brickell Village’s former Oceanaire space had been vacant for quite some time before North Italia announced plans to take over. Now, as several more of its neighbors have shut their doors, the corner restaurant has quickly made a name for itself as a go-to for local diners. Good old-fashioned Italian comfort food is front and center on the menu, so be sure to try any one of the specialty pizzas or pasta dishes. Find a perch at a high-top table on the newly repaved sidewalk patio and settle in for a night of people-watching at one of the most sought-after spots in town. 900 S. Miami Ave.,

Abaco Wines & Wine Bar, Miami and owner/winemaker Ben Disesa

Through the Grapevine

A TASTE OF CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY IN THE MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT Barowsky Disesa Vineyards, Healdsburg, California

BY JACQUELINE COLEMAN

Both partners are involved in the bicoastal venture, but Disesa’s background in viticulture and wine studies, along with his training under winemaker Justin Ennis of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, enables him to make excellent wine under the BDV name. He spends part of the year at the vineyard ensuring that operations are running smoothly before bringing his product back to South Florida. Abaco Wines is the only retail location in the United States where you can purchase all four wines under the BDV label.

The AM2 Syrah Rosé is the perfect summertime wine; slightly off-dry, it contains a refreshing mix of watermelon and cherry flavors that blend with the structure of the wine for an enjoyable tasting experience. Lighter in color, but not lacking in body, the Albertus Magnus Pinot Noir Rosé is a slightly more complex wine with flavors of ripe strawberries and a touch of orange zest. A dark red cherry and chocolate-layered pinot, the Phillip Leonard Pinot Noir is a wonderfully smooth yet complex wine with decent acidity and a long finish. Comprising the four best barrels of each vintage, the Barowsky Pinot Noir is an estate-grown wine that is limited to less than 1,000 bottles a year. If you choose to purchase a bottle of BDV wine—or any bottle—at Abaco, save your receipt. You can enjoy it at nearby restaurants Mandolin Aegean Bistro and Beaker & Gray within seven days without a corkage fee.

CALIFORNIA DREAMING If wine tasting in Miami’s Design District taps your thirst for travel, you can head to Sonoma Valley and stay at Barowsky Disesa Vineyards’ newly renovated bed and breakfast. Just an hour north of San Francisco, you’ll find yourself in a picturesque town where genuine hospitality regularly accompanies the wine. Complete with views of Mount St. Helena in the distance and amenities such as an outdoor pool, a tennis court, an on-site winery and an Instagrammable oak tree swing, this unmatched destination is truly a wine lover’s dream.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS ANTI-AGING & SKIN CARE

ABOUT FACE

Growing old gracefully? Not on our watch. A little nip and tuck? We endorse it (within reason, of course). And if you’re looking for the perfect spray tan, we know just the place.

NEEDLE POINTERS

SWEET SIXTEEN

“What is wrong with my skin?!” Dr. Leslie Baumann, a Miami-based, board-certified dermatologist, answers this common cry on a daily basis with the help of Skin Type Solutions, a groundbreaking system she created that aids people in making educated decisions about their skin care based on their skin type, which falls into one of 16 categories.

Dr. Leslie Baumann

“I came up with 16 skin types based on four barriers to healthy skin: dehydration, inflammation, dyspigmentation (uneven skin tone) and lifestyle factors that lead to aging,” Baumann says of her approach, which arose from years of scientific study and has since taken dermatology by storm. It was first detailed in 2005 in her New York Times best-selling book The Skin Type Solution; in 2010, it was broadcast as a PBS special, Skin Type Solutions with Dr. Leslie Baumann. Now, it is taught in dermatology textbooks and used by over 100 doctors worldwide. To better understand the 16 types, consider No. 4, DSNW (Dry/Sensitive/NonPigmented/Wrinkle-Prone). “Someone with DSNW skin is usually an adult with acne,” explains Baumann. “This type of skin needs hydroxy acid cleansers, retinoids to treat aging and acne, and a barrier repair moisturizer to help the skin hold on to water.”

Which procedures do you perform most often, and what do they accomplish? The two most common procedures are Botox and fillers. Botox relaxes the muscles that, due to overuse, create crow’s feet, frown lines and wrinkles. Fillers replace fat loss, which is one of the major reasons faces change when we age. How long do these treatments last? It is recommended to repeat Botox treatments before the effects are fully lost—every four to five months. In general, fillers last six to 12 months, although there are exceptions like Juvéderm Voluma, which lasts one to two years. Have you noticed a shift in trends regarding how clients want to look? These days, people tend to want to restore their own anatomy rather than changing it dramatically. They want to look fresh, but still look like themselves. How do you prevent a client from getting too carried away? Being that my name is attached, I will only help someone achieve the best version of themselves. At the first consultation, we explain the change in anatomy and what tools we can use to restore a more youthful appearance. I remind clients that when a procedure is “overdone,” it will become the focus of attention, which is not a desirable goal. If a client wants something outlandish, I won’t do it.

Even if you’re brave enough to wage war against aging, or step outside your comfort zone in the name of beauty, the Dr. Mariano Busso concept of injectables can still be daunting. We had the privilege of interviewing acclaimed Miami dermatologist Dr. Mariano Busso, a clinical trainer for Restylane and Botox and the only physician in the nation who has performed clinical trials for Radiesse and Artefill (Artecoll). Here’s what he shared:

GO FOR THE GOLD

South Floridians are sun-worshippers (we wouldn’t live here if we weren’t). But we’re also smart, savvy and well-aware that bronzing by way of the ray comes with a price—and it’s one we’re not willing to pay. Nor are we willing to scrimp when it comes to achieving a gorgeous golden glow. Those in the know turn to Valet Tan, Miami Beach’s “be-all and end-all” of spray tans and more. Everyone from A-list celebrities to top athletes to Victoria’s Secret models come here. Even nervous brides trust Valet Tan to bronze them on the most important days of their lives.

FIGURING IT OUT

After nearly 10,000 surgeries, Careaga knows full well that one size does not fit all, and he relishes the challenge. Part practitioner, part sculptor, he recognizes that what he does is not just a science, but also an art. “Plastic surgery is the perfect fusion of art and science,” he says. “You need an artistic eye to take something good and make it better.”

But you don’t have to be about to walk down the red carpet, the runway or the aisle to get star treatment. “We care about all of our clients, whether they are famous or not,” says owner and airbrush specialist Falen Whipple, who moved to Miami seven years ago to open one of the first successful mobile spray tan companies on the beach. By building relationships with top dermatologists, she has helped educate consumers that with the evolution of spray tans, there is no longer reason to bake in the sun. “Spray tanning brings instant gratification and lasting results,” says Whipple. “It helps hide cellulite, stretch marks and any other skin imperfections you can think of. It makes you look 10 pounds lighter, your teeth look whiter and, let’s not forget, it ups your selfie game!”

With that said, cosmetic surgery, like any surgery, is not to be taken lightly. It comes down to expectations, feasibility and finances. “The ideal candidates for aesthetic surgery must have their expectations aligned with their condition, deformity or whatever is affecting their self-confidence,” says Careaga. “An elderly person who wants the breasts of a 20-year-old is not being realistic.”

Embracing the holistic trend, Valet Tan also offers an infrared sauna, which, unlike traditional saunas, heats the body from the inside out. Other services include sound healing with crystal bowls, essential oil treatments, ionic foot detoxing and reiki.

Even as a surgeon, Careaga respects the advancements in nonsurgical options. “Noninvasive procedures like CoolSculpting are an adjunct, effective for love handles or lower abdominal fat,” he says. “But if you have fat distributed all over the body, you won’t get the same result. Surgery is still the gold standard and the best option for a more complete correction.”

Check out Valet Tan’s summer VIP “Glow Diggers Only” package (unlimited spray tans, infrared sauna and ionic foot detox treatments for $275/month). And keep an eye out for a new location coming soon to Boca Raton.

There’s no denying that South Florida is one of the most body-conscious regions in the U.S. And with so many images and mixed messages bombarding you on a daily basis, it can be difficult to remain levelheaded. Surgical solutions might not be for everyone, Dr. Daniel Careaga but if you think they’re for you, Dr. Daniel Careaga, an award-winning, double board-certified plastic surgeon, can help you navigate your way to the body that’s perfect for you.

DITCH THE KNIFE

Nina Presman, founder of the Anti-Aging Center of Boca, discusses the benefits of a new noninvasive weight-loss treatment called Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU. What is Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU? It’s a nonsurgical treatment that is designed to help patients lose weight and inches quickly, easily and risk-free. How does it work? High-frequency sound waves are applied to create bubbles in the liquid that surrounds your fat cells. The cells do not have the capacity to withstand these vibrations, so the ultrasound causes them to gradually grow and implode. The liquid that makes up the fat cells, in the form of triglycerides, is then released into the fluid between the cells, which is then metabolized. Water-soluble

glycerol is absorbed by the circulatory system and is used as an energy source, while the free fatty acids are transported to the liver as fatty acids from food.

Nina Presman

What are the benefits? Clients typically lose between 2 and 6 inches in just one session. The procedure is done without anesthesia, and requires no cutting, scars, post-operative care or recovery time.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS HAIR & MAKEUP

GET GLAMMED

Summer in South Florida is sizzling, which means the sweltering heat and high humidity can wreak havoc on your hair and makeup. With that in mind, we’ve sifted through our resources to bring you pro tips and primo products, so you can beat the heat and strut into the season with confidence.

FACIAL RECOGNITION

1. Start your makeup routine every 5. I love the look of a healthy, hydrated day with a moisturizing sunblock that has at least SPF 30.

2. If foundation isn’t your speed, use a

tinted moisturizer. If you feel you need more coverage, lightly treat the areas of concern with a concealer; tap in with fingers for a flawless finish.

3. Use waterproof mascara for your lashes to avoid “transferring.”

4. Bronzer is the best invention. Use

a medium-sized fluffy brush and apply where the sun would hit: forehead, tops of cheeks, bridge of nose. Pro tip: Bronzer can also double as an eyeshadow. Makeup by Maggie Strunk; photo by Sasha Benjelloun

pout, so I start my clients off with a lip scrub to get rid of any dead skin. I then use a hydrating balm or gloss.

6.

To combat shine, carry blotting paper with you. If you are on the dry side and your T-zone oils begin to break through, use an expert face brush and buff your face to rejuvenate your makeup.

7. Remember, when body heat rises, cheeks begin to flush, so go easy on the blush in summertime.

BEACH WAVES

Celebrities, royals and those with a craving for luxe locks can’t wait to let Britishborn industry expert Sean Sean Donaldson Donaldson get his hands on their manes. His salons in South Beach and Brickell are bustling with clients who trust Donaldson and his team of experts to create the perfect coif. Donaldson offers the following advice for anyone who stresses over their tresses when temperatures rise. What’s the best way to combat the “frizzies” now that humidity is at its peak? A professional brand shampoo and conditioner appropriate to your hair type can help get things under control. Applying a leave-in conditioner after any and all sun, sea and pool exposure is key. What’s your recipe for creating “beach waves”? Turn your head upside down and blast dry hair with a blow dryer to lift the roots and create a natural messy look. Finish with a curling wand both midlength and at the ends for the perfect “S” bend. Finish with a light oil spray. Any tips to prevent fading from the blazing sun? Always use color-safe products and treat yourself to bespoke, color-protecting salon treatments. Avoid overexposure to chlorinated water, as this will pull color and stain blond shades. How do you help clients achieve a “sun-kissed” look with highlights? Sun-kissed hair is best achieved through natural multitonal highlights and lowlights. The color should be simple and start away from the roots—baby lights, simple ombré and color melting are the perfect techniques. Of course, a color consultation for your desired summer shade is always the best way to start.

TUMMY TIME

SMART MOVES

We, the luxury-inclined, gaze at summer through the lenses of our designer sunglasses. Our visions are of lounging poolside, cocktails in hand, wearing our fabulous, flattering new swimsuits. But for many of us, thoughts of that last part fill us with dread. Well, look on the sunny side: South Florida offers enjoyable and effective fitness options, which, when taken advantage of, allow us to shed our trendy boho cover-ups with confidence.

How is belly dancing different from other dance genres? Not only do we use props such as veils, finger cymbals and fans, but the technique itself combines all types of movement, from soft and liquidy to sharp pop-and-lock styling. In many dance forms, the movements are big and your whole body is used for one movement. In belly dancing, we learn how to isolate individual parts of the body and contract small muscles you never knew you had. What are the fitness benefits of belly dancing? You will work up a sweat, but it’s much more than a cardio workout. This dance form benefits the entire body and can result in a slimmer waist, strengthened hips and legs and firmer glutes. What should I wear to class? You should come to class in any outfit in which you can comfortably move and stretch. I encourage people to wear something that exposes the abdomen, but it’s not required. Hip scarves are a plus, especially ones with coins attached for a nice “jingle.” Is belly dancing only for women? Although it is often recognized as a feminine art form, throughout history, men have also been involved. In fact, one of the highestacclaimed troupes in the world was cofounded by a man named Mahmoud Reda. I absolutely encourage men to take my class. We all have an inner god or goddess just waiting to be discovered!

Come as you are!” We spoke with Samadhi to get to the core of the matter.

WONDER WOMAN

Faster than a speeding bullet, Lisa Dorfman circles the globe to save the world with her nutrition expertise. She currently works as a consultant for Sony Entertainment Latin America, and previously worked with A-list actors in films such as The Avengers and Iron Man 3, among other Lisa Dorfman blockbusters that didn’t include caped crusaders. Not only is she an integrative nutritionist and a board-certified specialist in sports dietetics, she is also a trained chef and has authored eight books. The Miami resident and mother of three is also a competitive runner and triathlete. It wasn’t easy, but we used our “golden lasso” to catch Dorfman (aka The Running Nutritionist) to pick her brain about slimming down for summer. Here is what we learned: I’m not brave enough to put on my bathing suit. Where do I begin? Confidence is about feeling good in your own skin. Take a step back and focus on what makes you uncomfortable and what’s sabotaging your efforts. You might be surprised to learn that you’re not getting enough fruits and veggies, which are full of vitamins and minerals that burn fat. Shoot for five colors a day—and don’t forget about “white,” like cauliflower, cabbage and turnips. When should I eat my largest meal? Or should I just “graze” throughout the day? Breakfast is literally breaking a physiological fast. Research has shown that having protein at breakfast is important, whether it’s yogurt, an egg

or even a café con leche with a cup of milk. During the day is the best time to get the foods that satiate you most. Avoid eating late. If you eat too close to bedtime, you’re going to sleep with your dinner! I’m really out of shape. What other options do I have besides wearing a muumuu? You may not like it, but you’ve got to get on your feet. Do a half-hour of jogging or walking per day, then hop on a bike, swim laps or do a half-hour of weights. Holding yourself accountable to others can help. Get a trainer or at least a workout buddy. This is no time for excuses.

Modern ŌM’s Miami Mindfulness Club

MOBILE MINDFULNESS

Those who think meditation is for monks might want to take a closer look. Modern ŌM’s Miami Mindfulness Club brings “conscious” people together for monthly meditations, mindfulness workshops and social gatherings. We spoke to founder and CEO Myk Likhov to get the inside scoop.

DON’T WORRY. BE HAPPY.

Who among us doesn’t long to be more self-aware, live happier, feel better and find inner peace? The road to wellness starts here.

WELLNESS WONDERLAND

The lush 50-acre setting of Hippocrates Health Institute, West Palm Beach’s renowned nonprofit hub for comprehensive wellness, invites guests from all over the world to partake in its transformative programming. Filled with trickling fountains, secluded gazebos and winding pathways, this is more than a place to unwind—it’s a place of rebirth. Developed by humanitarian Ann Wigmore, who was later joined by nutritionist and spiritual advisor Viktoras Kulvinskas, the institute has spent over 60 years building upon the philosophies of Hippocrates, known as the “Father of Modern Medicine.” Some guests arrive after having been told they have mere weeks left to live. Others simply come to enhance their lives and become enlightened. Regardless of the reason, myriad testimonials indicate people leave changed for the better.

1466 Hippocrates Way, West Palm Beach; 561.471.8876; hippocratesinst.org

Why is meditation so important? Our world is filled with so many stimuli and distractions that it’s imperative to disconnect and unplug. The practice of meditation offers space away from the stresses of life. What makes Modern ŌM unique? We are a lifestyle brand for mindfulness that offers “consciousnessbased programming.” We give people the experience of reaching deeper states, but rather than doing so in isolation, we focus on community. Why is practicing meditation in a group setting so effective? When you practice as a group, you get the energy of the group, the wisdom of the teachers, and you meet other people who are also “conscious.” We not only provide access to these techniques, but also connection for those who didn’t previously have it. What are the benefits of membership? Belonging to Miami Mindfulness Club allows entry to over 40 monthly meditation sessions, as well as special pricing on workshops, full access to our app and a discount on all Modern ŌM products. modernom.co

Ravenscroft International is a shining beacon for those seeking inner peace. The Ravenscroft Approach to Psycho-Spiritual Integration (RAPSI) has been identified as an advanced form of psychotherapy in the U.K. since the late ’80s. The method has now arrived in the U.S. and is about to shed a light that is so bright, it’s blinding! Created by Eileen Watkins Seymour, RAPSI addresses the source of the problem behind the symptoms. She and partner Clive DigbyJones are conducting a clinical study that, when complete, will be compiled into a report that will impart credibility to RAPSI in this country. The pair’s mission is to help people radiate their “full light” and to achieve inner peace and a sense of wholeness. “Science tells us that we, like everything else in the universe, are made of energy,” Watkins Seymour explains. “Energy can present itself as light. Our ‘source light’ can become

fragmented and implode inward; conversely, it can go out of body and stay there until found and reintegrated.” “The healing process is facilitated by two professionals with different backgrounds: Eileen as a psychotherapist and teacher, me as an innovation consultant and executive coach,” adds Digby-Jones. “People respond to us differently at different times.” Sessions take place in their Lake Worth home, where their therapy dog, Digby, adds another dimension of support. Their mantra is: “Hear us, but don’t believe a word we say until you have your own experience,” as their opinion is you need to try it first. The thousands who have successfully removed the blockage from their “source light” agree. 561.351.9134;

Get the Skinny on BTL EMSCULPT The only aesthetic procedure that tones muscles and burns fat.

Mariano Busso, M.D. Dr. Mariano Busso is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Is EMSCULPT uncomfortable?

Dr. Busso: EMSCULPT treatments feel a little like exercise. You might experience muscle soreness, but there are no needles, no anesthesia. After a half-hour session, continue with your daily routine—no downtime.

How many treatments are required?

Dr. Busso: Typically four 30-minute treatments spaced one to two days apart.

Are EMSCULPT results long-lasting?

Dr. Busso: Results last three to six months. Maintenance involves about two sessions every 90 days.

What is EMSCULPT?

EMSCULPT is the first electromagnetic body-sculpting procedure that reshapes muscles and reduces fat by stimulating rapid muscle contractions. EMSCULPT tones muscles and signals the body to burn fat, and is an effective treatment for women who want to restore a tight-looking stomach after their abdominal muscles have separated during pregnancy.

Who is the ideal EMSCULPT patient?

EMSCULPT is great at lifting and firming the buttocks and shaping the abdomen by toning muscles and reducing fat. Ideal patients are seeking better body contour and do not have an excessive amount of fat.

How long have you been using EMSCULPT? Dr. Busso: “Although EMSCULPT was recently launched, I have been using it for two years in clinical trials. As part of BTL’s testing and research team, I have the first EMSCULPT machine in Florida serving patients in my Coconut Grove office.”

Where can people learn more?

Dr. Busso: The best way is through my website, www.drbusso.com/emsculpt. Or, schedule a consultation to learn about EMSCULPT and our wide selection of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments.

How does EMSCULPT compare to CoolSculpting? Dr. Busso: CoolSculpting only reduces fat. EMSCULPT tones muscles and reduces fat to reshape abdomens and lift buttocks. Muscle-toning offers more lifting and sculpting possibilities than fat reduction alone.

In the studio with... ANDRÉS MEDINA LEAD ARCHITECT, FEDE DESIGN BY ROBIN HODES

S

ince moving to the U.S. from Colombia five years ago, Andrés Medina, lead architect for Fede Design, has developed a great deal of passion and respect for the successful integration of architecture and design. It is the foundation for every project that he and his team create for clients in Miami, New York, California, Mexico, Venezuela and beyond. Working hand in hand with Fede’s lead designer and CEO Federico Teran, Medina has honed his skills of “tuning in” to clients’ needs, tastes and everyday rituals. “I recognize that details are the essence of design,” he says. “We need to be great listeners to be successful in a project.”

Custom-made sofa by Fede Design, produced by Fede Furniture; club chairs and side tables by Artefacto; double-height wall in Toujurin Japanese stone by Valencia Coverings with custom-made millwork by Bauhaus Design Studio Andrés Medina

What is your definition of “architectural excellence”? To me, excellence is achieved when the design strikes a perfect balance between beauty and functionality. A project only becomes “excellent” when it brings satisfaction and happiness to the people who will live there. Describe your work dynamic with Federico Teran. It is important for us to have trust in one another. Over the years, I’ve learned how to “read” Fede’s preferences for colors, textures and finishes. He has not only been a teacher, but also a friend who is open to new ideas that will make each project we create together incredible.

A PROJECT ONLY BECOMES “EXCELLENT” WHEN IT BRINGS SATISFACTION AND HAPPINESS TO THE PEOPLE WHO WILL LIVE THERE. — Andrés Medina

Wall paneling by Valencia Coverings; custom-made bed by Fede Design, produced by Fede Furniture; chandelier by Currey & Company; throw and bench by Z Gallerie

Do you have a favorite material or design element that you incorporate into your projects? I like to blend materials to create a sense of harmony. For example, leather panels on a wall combined with a marble slab and perfect lighting makes a strong statement. Which architects inspire you and why? I’ve always had a deep admiration for two great architects: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Richard Meier, both of whom created architectural concepts in the past that continue to define the architecture of the present. I often refer to their works, which incorporate open spaces, natural light and sculptural lines. What would be the ideal destination for your “dream project”? I love nature and dream of living in a home surrounded by it. At the risk of it sounding a bit selfish, my ultimate project would be having the opportunity to design my own home in the forest.

Do you have experience with “green” or sustainable design? As a LEED AP BD+C, I have the training and experience to guide our clients through the process of sustainable design. Carlos J. Bravo, AIA LEED AP BD+C, is a licensed architect and a LEED Accredited Professional designing highend single family residences, high-rise multi-family and mixed-use development.

If sustainable design technologies are implemented, do upfront costs exist that may af fec t the construc tion budget? Sustainable Design Technologies may have an upfront cost. Par t of the design process is to review and analyze what technologies make sense financially and how to best implement them.

The Shoreline at Solé Mia

TRENDING TRENDING REAL GOLF ESTATE

THE SHAPE OF WATER

Buzz-worthy luxury properties from Miami to Palm Beach are making waves with their outstanding water features. BY ROBIN HODES

Monaco Yacht Club & Residences

At The Shoreline at Solé Mia, residents feel like they are living on a Caribbean island thanks to the 7-acre lagoon by global brand Crystal Lagoons. A first of its kind in South Florida, it is the pièce de résistance of this $4 billion master-planned community by New York mega-developer family the LeFraks and South Florida’s own prominent development family the Soffers. “Residents are captivated by waterfront living at the Shoreline,” says LeFrak Chairman and CEO Richard LeFrak. “Its 397 residences have brought longawaited, amenity-rich luxury rental housing to North Miami.” The Shoreline, jointly designed by Arquitectonica and Robert M. Swedroe Architects, welcomed its first residents in February. It comprises just two of Solé Mia’s 12 planned residential towers.

shorelinesolemia.com Monaco Yacht Club & Residences is a 12-story tower inspired by the French Riviera’s playground for the rich and famous. Situated on one of the last remaining waterfront properties on Miami Beach’s Indian Creek Drive, the project includes a 12-slip marina accommodating vessels up to 55 feet and 94

will have a designated yachting concierge to attend to the needs of residents. “Our aim was to create a timeless design while bringing the sophistication of European coastal living to Miami Beach,” says Ricardo Tabet, owner and CEO of Optimum Development USA. “Led by two of the most esteemed names in design, Piero Lissoni and Arquitectonica, our team has blended the most celebrated elements of Miami—the culture, the water, the beach—to create the ultimate waterfront lifestyle.” monacoyachtclubresidences.com A collaboration between Creative Choice Group and S&E Architects, Amrit Ocean Resort & Residences on Palm Beach’s Singer Island embraces the restorative properties of water. A significant portion of the project’s 100,000 square feet of spa and wellness space is dedicated to an “Aayush” hydrothermal area. “Aayush, which means ‘longevity’ in Sanskrit, offers curated hydrothermal-focused experiences not found anywhere else in the world,” says Alison Howland, vice president of wellness programs and resources. The replenishment pools—one warm, one cool—enhance circulation, while an effusion shower offers a “hydro-journey” of soothing mists, intense deluge storms, downpours of tropical rain and mystic arctic chills. Another unique perk: Penthouse owners will enjoy ritual bath butler services. amritocean.com As new and innovative applications of H2O continue to enhance South Florida’s oasis of luxury properties, it’s fair to say that our thirst for water is thoroughly quenched.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

WORLD TOUR

In keeping with this issue’s Destinations theme, we present the most coveted new automobiles from three distinct corners of the globe.

BY JERRY PEREZ

AMERICAN DREAM

Say hello to the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, the fastest Mustang ever produced. This all-new pony continues the legacy of the late automotive designer Carroll Shelby, who always wanted more power, more speed and more performance out of a car. Ford engineers are mum on specifics, but they claim the Shelby’s V-8 produces more than 700 horsepower and that its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission can shift in as little as 100 milliseconds—making this Motor City brawler the most powerful street-legal engine ever created by the brand. ford.com MSRP: $80,000 (est.) | Top track speed: 200 mph (est.) | Engine: 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 | Horsepower: 700+ | 0-60 mph: 3.5 seconds (est.)

In a country rife with design and engineering masterpieces, the 2019 Bugatti Chiron Sport “110 Ans Bugatti” has managed to find a place among them, celebrating the French marque’s 110th anniversary by adding even more intricate touches to the world’s most detail-intensive automobile. Resembling a hot-rolled steel finish, the matte steel-blue carbon-fiber body is accompanied by exposed blue-carbon bits in the front and rear ends. The side mirrors and massive rear spoiler are adorned with the French Tricolour, while the Alcantara and leather sports seats feature bleublanc-rouge embroidery and “110 Ans Bugatti” on the headrests. Limited to 20 units. bugatti.com

2019 Bugatti Chiron Sport “110 Ans Bugatti”

MSRP: $3.5 million (est.) | Top track speed: 261 mph | Engine: 8.0-liter quadturbo W16 | Horsepower: 1,480 | 0-60 mph: 2.5 seconds

FROM THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN Although it’s merely a (production-ready) concept for now, experts say the 2019 Lexus LC Convertible, a topless version of the LC 500 coupe, is bound to arrive soon from the Japanese automaker. Careful to maintain the essence of its fixed-roof sibling, Lexus designers blended performance and luxury into the roadster’s raking windshield and exposed midsection. The new deck lid has been contoured to appear slimmer and more athletic—despite needing to be expanded to hold the folding roof. Bright white leather surrounds the cabin while yellow accent stitching adds some color to an otherwise sleek appearance. lexus.com MSRP: $105,000 (est.) | Top track speed: 168 mph | Engine: 5.0-liter V-8 Horsepower: 471 | 0-60 mph: 4.6 seconds 104

2019 MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS

2020 MERCEDES-BENZ GLE

Allow your expectations to be shattered by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the automaker’s hottest new sedan, which starts at just $32,500! The A 220 and A 220 4Matic® are dynamic entry-level compacts that boast the same state-of-the-art technology as the brand’s flagship S-Class sedan. Inside, 64 available colors of ambient lighting bathe the cabin, while contrasting leather seats and circular air vents strike a fine balance between traditional and modern. Outside, stylish LED headlights and taillights ooze glamour, while available 19-inch wheels turn heads wherever they go.

Climb aboard one of the most advanced family haulers in the world, the Mercedes-Benz GLE. It’s offered in two body types: an SUV with room for seven thanks to an available third row, and the attitude-packed Coupe. Both, of course, feature stunning looks and unprecedented performance. The SUV can be outfitted with the new E-Active Body Control, which sharpens handling at speed and creates a more comfortable ride, regardless of terrain. The Coupe sports a sleeker profile while still offering the same family-friendly capabilities as its SUV sibling. Two different characters, one common goal.

MADE FOR ADVENTURE

What better way to explore the world’s most exotic locales than onboard one of these equally impressive yachts? BY DIANE M. BYRNE

KETCH ME IF YOU CAN This summer, you can explore the remote South Pacific waters of Papua New Guinea by chartering AQuiJO, the world’s largest high-performance ketch. Built by premier Dutch shipyards Vitters and Oceanco, AQuiJO can treat up to 12 guests to an exhilarating sailing experience with an interior akin to a chic, contemporary beach house. Warm woods and white walls dominate, while pops of bold color and striking art add further interest. Don’t overlook the beach club, a rarity aboard sailing yachts, which contains a sauna and other luxury amenities. y.co/yacht/aquijo

ACTIVE CRUISING

Storied shipyard Cheoy Lee created the CL Yachts brand to appeal to a younger, more active demographic looking to entertain guests. “Active” is the key word here, as the brand promises lively performance for wind-in-your-hair cruising. For example, with the semi-custom CLA 76, you can make a trip to the Bahamas for lunch and be back to South Florida in time for dinner. Choose the type of wood, stone and more throughout the interior to complement the open main deck, which is flooded with natural light, and the flying bridge, which is complete with a retractable roof. clyachts.com

THINK YOU’RE SAVING MONEY BY NOT HIRING A RECRUITER?... THINK AGAIN. Real Client Testimonial “Employees are the most valuable assets a company can have, yet we try to save money when it comes to recruiting them. By the time we calculate the costs of placing ads, perusing resumes, conducting phone and inperson interviews and calling references, the cost of time far outweighs the investment of hiring a recruiter. I recently hired Dojnia Human Resources & Staffing, and my only regret is not doing this years ago.” – Lynette Janac, Publisher, South Florida Luxury Guide
