The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

DISCONNECT IN ORDER TO REFLECT I

Recently, I took a trip to Key West. If staying on Duval Street with the beers, bars and bands isn’t your thing and you like more laid-back luxury, I suggest staying at the beautiful Parrot Key Hotel & Villas, which is just a 10-minute ride from Old Town. From my room, I was able to step out from my first-floor balcony onto a private beach, where I savored a glass of wine while watching the sun set. I also recently enjoyed a staycation at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. With eight restaurants and bars, a fully equipped fitness center, a full-service spa, two pools, private cabanas, beachfront umbrellas and chairs and a great lobby atmosphere, there is really no need to leave the premises! The Diplomat has great rates on hotel stays through September with rooms starting at $149 per night (they run $459/night in high season). To read more, visit our Destinations feature on page 112.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: DINING AT THE DIPLOMAT Even if you’re not planning an overnight stay at The Diplomat, don’t let that stop you from dining at one of its celebrity chef restaurants! The resort is home to one of my favorite restaurants, Monkitail, which serves up savory Japanese fare by chef and restaurateur Michael Schulson. Plus, there is a speak-easy area in the back called Nokku with four private karaoke rooms that can fit up to 18 people. Don’t wait to try this restaurant out: Through September, Monkitail is offering a 10-course chef’s tasting menu for just $69 per person. The Diplomat’s other star restaurant, Diplomat Prime, is an iconic steakhouse that continues to lure locals and tourists alike. Led by Executive Chef Rashaad Abdool, this restaurant doesn’t disappoint. We experienced top-of-the-line service and amazing food. And, I must say, the Dark Chocolate Sphere with banana rum, caramel and vanilla ice cream was probably the best dessert I have had in a long time!

turned 49 this summer. I can’t believe I have almost finished another decade of my life! When I was approaching 30 and 40, it didn’t really affect me. But there is something different about turning 50. I have found myself reflecting more on what I want my next 10 years to look like. Most of my adult life has been dedicated to working—a lot. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), I love to work, but I could like it so much that I miss out on other hobbies I might enjoy. I’ve decided that this upcoming year is going to be a year of introspection so that I can make positive changes for my next decade. I like to get away from the day-to-day treadmill on which I seem to keep myself by taking mini staycations. It is here where I can disconnect and, therefore, have time to reflect.

EDITOR’S LETTER

FALL 2019 CEO/Publisher Lynette Janac Editor-in-Chief/Creative Director Sherri Balefsky Hanson Client & Community Relations Coordinator Tyler Anderson Social Content Coordinator Crystal Cooper Photo by Evan Rich

T

he wheels are turning, literally, throughout the pages of our Fall 2019 issue, which is dedicated to the latest and greatest luxury motors that are capturing hearts—and wallets—all over the world. I myself was never a huge “car person” before I joined the team at South Florida Luxury Guide three years ago. And while I still can’t tell you the difference between a twin-turbo and a flat-six engine, I can rattle off high-end marques and their corresponding models with a much higher degree of confidence. We start out our Luxury Motors Special Feature (page 43) with a diverse roundup of high-end automobiles pulling up to car showrooms for 2020, from powerful midengines to deluxe SUVs to exclusive limited-edition hypercars—including the $12.5 million Bugatti La Voiture Noire, which graces our cover. And, because cars aren’t the only powerful modes of transportation, this issue also presents some of the newest yacht and superyacht models taking on waterways this season (page 59). Look out for these and many other vessels when the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show returns to our backyard this October. Elsewhere, you'll find a section dedicated to the newest tech gadgets, timepieces and other pricey "toys” (page 56) that will make both car enthusiasts and everyday drivers swoon (a $30,000 Lamborghini massage chair, anyone?). Plus, we present our original Style feature (page 69), where we paired some of the hottest fall fashion items with some of the best-selling vehicles currently available at local dealerships. And while extravagant modes of transportation get our pulses racing on a daily basis, it’s important to remember that life is all about the moments, memories and new possibilities and adventures that come along the way. Enjoy the ride!

GIVING BACK

DARE TO DREAM Miami City Ballet is on pointe for its 2019-20 season with four company premieres, a sizzling performance of Firebird and a magnificent gala that’s not to be missed. BY ROBIN HODES

ed by Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez, Miami City Ballet is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent ballet troupes. Since its founding in 1985 by Miami philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin and legendary choreographer Edward Villella, it has been known for cultivating rising talents, generating innovative collaborations and creating opportunities for inclusivity within the genre of classical ballet. “The experience of witnessing an MCB performance is always magical, energizing and transformative,” says Margot London, MCB board member and gala co-chair. “Pure joy on the dancers’ faces radiates throughout their bodies as they perform. It all plays on in my mind’s eye for a long time after the performance ceases.” MCB’s dynamic 2019-20 season will include returning favorites as well as four company premieres from some of America’s beloved dance masters, including I’m Old Fashioned (with choreography by Jerome Robbins inspired by the iconic Fred Astaire film You Were Never Lovelier) and Balanchine’s Firebird. These will be juxtaposed by a collection of

{

works from choreographic pioneers of the 21st century, including Justin Peck’s modern take on Aaron Copland’s classic score Rodeo and Christopher Wheeldon’s poignant pas de deux This Bitter Earth. But performances are only a part of MCB’s overall mission. “Community outreach is one of the most important pillars of the organization,” says Lisa Massirman, also an MCB board member and gala co-chair. “With programs such as Ballet Bus (a nine-month scholarship program for local children), we aim to help families in underserved areas of our community and to transform lives by eliminating any barriers to accessing dance.” “I had the moving experience of attending the culminating performance of MCB Palm Beaches’ Summer Dance Camp, a three-week scholarship program for children ages 7-12,” adds London. “With such a program, we fulfill our mission of eliminating barriers to access and engage with emerging young dancers who otherwise might not have this opportunity. This is only one of the many community engagement programs that we carry out.”

One of the most anticipated social events of the season, the gala raises funds to support the company’s initiatives for training, community involvement and recognition as a leader in dance. “The evening will be elegant and thrilling, with dazzling decor and culinary delights,” says London. “After cocktail hour, guests will enjoy an excerpt of Don Quixote performed live by MCB dancers.” For tickets and more

Le Jardinier’s Crudo Cucumber

NEW IN TOWN Miami’s dining scene only continues to grow—not just in size, but in caliber. Here, we present some of the top new restaurants that everyone is talking about. BY BECKY RANDEL

A LEGEND ARRIVES For years, rumors have been circulating about a Design District opening from legendary chef Joël Robuchon, who held 31 Michelin stars in his lifetime—more than any other chef in history. Although the chef passed away in August 2018, the project has finally come to fruition. Already a cult favorite in NYC’s Meatpacking District, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon serves up the chef’s signature modern French cuisine. Diners can choose from a selection of à la carte items or several multicourse tasting menus. Longtime Robuchon protégé Chef Christophe Bellanca, culinary director for Joël Robuchon USA, will oversee the restaurant. Additionally, Le Jardinier, a chic vegetable-focused eatery created by Robuchon protégé Chef Alain Verzeroli, has opened in the space below L’Atelier. Local produce plays a prominent role on the menu, which is complemented by wild and sustainable fish, meat and poultry. 151 NE 41st St., Miami;

Osaka’s Niku Tataki

FROM COAST TO COAST Italy is known for its refined sophistication and delicious food, and Miami Beach’s family-owned Amare Ristorante hits both of these notes. The SoFi eatery is a collaboration between Gino Iovino, owner of Atlantic City’s award-winning restaurant Girasole, and Franco Ricatti and Chef Cosimo Cassano of Michelin-starred Ristorante Bacco in Puglia, Italy. The chef honors his homeland with dishes such as the pasta di Gragnano; the branzino al sale, a salt-baked Mediterranean sea bass that’s filleted tableside; and the lasagna di mare, with layers of house-made lasagne, fish ragu, mascarpone and tomato sauce.

Brickell’s new restaurant Osaka is shaking up the local dining scene in a fabulous way. Helmed by chefs Rogger Quispe and Juan Urrutia, the Nikkei restaurant merges Japanese techniques with Peruvian flavors within a traditional-meets-modern ambiance. The eatery marks the 10th location for the Osaka brand, which already operates nine successful restaurants in South America and is listed as one of Latin America’s “50 Best Restaurants.” Be sure to try the famous wasabi ceviche, which pairs the spicy condiment with seafood and leche de tigre. 1300 Brickell Bay Drive, Miami;

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Celino South Beach recently underwent a massive $110 million transformation, combining three original art deco buildings to create one oceanfront retreat—the largest hospitality development in Ocean Drive’s history. The hotel now houses two restaurants from INK Entertainment, the company behind hot spot Byblos: The first, Pubblica Italiana, features authentic Italian cuisine; the second, Dalia, offers Mediterranean bites and connects to the horseshoe-shaped cocktail bar. All spaces were artfully created by Toronto-based firm Navigate Design in what the hotel describes as a mix of “Floridita” and Cuban modernism. 640 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach; 305.685.2000; thecelinohotel.com

MORE MICHAEL

Como Metropolitan Miami Beach is one of SoBe’s few underthe-radar gems that lacks the craziness you might expect from the area. The hotel recently introduced its new restaurant Traymore by Michael Schwartz, a partnership with the star chef, who borrows flavors from Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore for his coveted menu. Expect a raw bar with highlights like the royal red shrimp and main dishes such as Korean-style pork tenderloin. Another must-try? The grass-fed beef double cheeseburger—a deliciously gooey take on the American classic. 2445 Collins Ave., Miami Beach;

Via Emilia Garden’s Tagliatelle Panna Salsiccia e Funghi

MIDTOWN GARDEN South Beach favorite Via Emilia 9 from Nonna Beppa Hospitality Group now has a sister restaurant in Midtown called Via Emilia Garden. Diners can expect the same modern Italian menu—including Via Emilia classics like the tagliatelle panna salsiccia e funghi and the “Basket from Emilia Romagna,” a charcuterie board with meats, cheese, gnocco fritto (fried dough) and marmalades—in a bigger, more upscale atmosphere. We recommend dining alfresco in the garden area, which features a retractable wooden roof designed to beat the South Florida heat and the occasional rain shower.

THE FUTURE IS NOW

It wasn’t long ago that people thought that by the year 2020, we would have flying cars, hovering bikes and mass space exploration. Of course, our cars still travel by road, our bikes adhere to the ground and space is still mostly off-limits—but the latest vehicles to grace car showrooms across the globe remain nothing short of spectacular, ambitious and even, at times, otherworldly. In the upcoming pages of our annual Luxury Motors Special Feature, you’ll see why the new generation of automobiles is already considered one of the most disruptive in history. BY JERRY PEREZ

Bugatti La Voiture Noire

BUGATTI LA VOITURE NOIRE

Bugatti’s latest piece of rolling art is the $12.5 million La Voiture Noire, the world’s most expensive new car. Only one example of “The Black Car” has been started by the expert craftsmen in Molsheim, France, and it won’t actually be ready for another two years. That didn’t stop Bugatti from revealing it to the world during the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, hoping to drum up some excitement and future buyers. Speaking of which, the owner of the very first example of the ultralimited-edition hypercar remains a mystery, but rumors speculate that it’s former Volkswagen Group CEO Ferdinand Piëch or soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Adhering to Maranello’s strict tradition of building revolutionary machinery, the newest Ferrari boasts a cutting-edge hybrid drivetrain system derived from the brand’s other SF90 (the one piloted in the 2019 Formula One World Championship by Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc). The road-legal SF90 Stradale delivers performance typically associated with purpose-built race cars thanks to the nearly 1,000 horsepower on tap from its potent V-8 engine. The first-ever deployment of all-wheel drive on a top-tier Prancing Horse, in addition to active aerodynamic elements, make this million-dollar hypercar one to remember for decades to come.

2020 BMW M8 CONVERTIBLE

After a 20-year hiatus, BMW is bringing back its venerable 8 Series along with its high-performance counterparts: the M8 and the M8 Convertible. The topless German car sports a low-slung roof with extra-wide fenders that give it an intimidating presence as well as pristine aerodynamics. Powered by BMW’s flagship V-8 engine, the M8 can rocket to a software-limited 189 mph while pampering its occupants in refined luxury. Power is routed to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system that can be deactivated, turning the 600-horsepower convertible into a mean drifting machine if and when desired.

2020 ALFA ROMEO 4C SPIDER ITALIA EDITION

It’s low to the ground, small in size and light in weight, but the Alfa Romeo 4C pays big dividends in terms of driving enjoyment. With only 15 units available worldwide, the all-new Italia Edition packs more exclusivity and even more Italian flair than the “regular” 4C Spider, which is already a niche car—even by most European sports car standards. Therefore, this zippy Alfa is rarer than most modern-day Ferraris. It boasts a trim-exclusive metallic Misano blue exterior, a piano-black air intake and rear diffuser, various Italian flag mementos throughout and a metal plate on the center console highlighting its build number.

2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Italia Edition

BEHIND THE DESIGN

We caught up with Scott Krugger, head of design at Alfa Romeo, to discuss the past, present and future of the storied Italian auto brand. What is the inspiration behind the modern Alfa Romeo design language? The biggest inspirations are heritage and performance. For example, the current Alfa Romeo Giulia takes its lines from classic cars like the original 1960s Giulia, the stunning 33 Stradale and the impressive 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” Coupe, but also from our rich racing history. We also refer to art, the human body and beautiful objects for inspiration, but at the end of the day, we condense it into a single object to become a true Alfa Romeo. How does heritage play into design? Our heritage is important, but for the future, we always balance what’s needed. All modern Alfas feature the brand’s prominent Scudetto grille, which is elegantly sculpted within the front fascia to form the signature trilobo, a staple of Alfa Romeo design dating back to the 1960s.

2020 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY C8

One of the most awaited vehicles of the decade, Chevy’s Corvette C8 represents the eighth generation of America’s most popular sports car and the pinnacle of engineering for General Motors. Drastically altering the ’Vette’s 66-year history, it ditches the traditional front-engine configuration and adopts a mid-engine instead. The base-model LT2 V-8 engine propels the vehicle with a robust 495 ponies, with higher horsepower and possibly a twin-turbo variant coming in future Z06 and ZR1 trims. The styling not only breaks the mold created back in 1953, but it also establishes the Corvette as a solid player on the world stage—not to mention, the trunk is big enough for two sets of golf clubs. TRICKED-OUT INTERIORS

Things have changed drastically since the dawn of the automobile, when metal levers and switches controlled overly simplistic dashboards and center consoles. As time went by, plastic buttons became the norm, and those were followed by early-day touch screens. Nowadays, the touch screen is king, which leads us to ask the question: What’s next? The answer is more like: How big? Look at Tesla’s 15-inch vertical screens that have become synonymous with cars of the future. Or Jaguar and Land Rover, which have now switched to center consoles where every component—climate, radio and more—is operated via two horizontal touch screens. Electric car startups like Byton are designing interiors with 49-inch touch screens to work as all-digital dashboards. With software ruling the modern world, it’s safe to say that bigger and smarter touch screens have only brushed the surface of what’s possible. Touch screen inside a Tesla Model X

GOING GREEN

There is a big possibility that in our lifetime, internalcombustion engines and their gasoline- or diesel-burning ways will be things of the past. Automakers around the world know that the clock is ticking on fossil fuels and that something must be done. The science community’s warnings about global warming have only accelerated the transition to hybrid, to plug-in hybrid and, now, to fully electric vehicles. Toyota has spent over a decade developing the cleanest energy form we know so far: hydrogen. Companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo have jumped onto the fully electric bandwagon. And even racing series like Formula E, Formula One’s electric counterpart, are doing their part to shed light on the subject. 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC

ROSSINAVI INFINITY 42

Just as the symbol for infinity has two loops, so does the Rossinavi Infinity 42, part of a new collaborative series with builder Camper & Nicholsons that was designed with the American market in mind. The “loops” are made from a single line that shapes two important areas onboard: the open-area aft and the private alfresco owner’s area forward, which features a shaded terrace that allows owners to enjoy the outdoors without being in the sun. Rossinavi worked with Italian yacht architect Fulvio De Simoni to turn conventional thinking on its head when it came to providing large areas for entertaining. “We wanted to overcome the challenges of allowing wide common areas within a possibly limiting sporty design,” says COO Federico Rossi. “The sporting spirit of the project nevertheless maintains Rossinavi’s high standards in terms of comfort and sea attitude.”

WAJER 55

Dutch builder Wajer (pronounced “WHY-er”) has made a name for itself with small, sporty motorboats that superyacht owners treasure as tenders. The Wajer 55 is the brand’s newest and biggest day cruiser, which boasts similarly sporty lines, along with a 13-footwide wrap-around glass windshield. It also incorporates super-cool technology, such as a push-button fender system that prompts the fenders to not just extend, but also inflate. Whether you’re looking for a fun, fast weekender or a boat suited to taking the family on longer trips, this model fits the bill. wajer.com

Palm Beach 70

PALM BEACH 70

The largest cruiser to date from Palm Beach Motor Yachts, the Palm Beach 70 is a response to customers who said they wanted more room to enjoy longer-range cruising. Comfortably accommodating seven people, this modern-day classic appeals to traditionalists who love the enduring “Down East” style of New England. It also has separate crew cabins, perfect if you prefer entertaining and relaxing with family and friends versus taking the wheel. Outside, don’t miss the cozy bow lounge, complete with its own sound system, and the flying bridge, which features an L-shaped settee and triple helm seats.

Coinciding with its 60th anniversary, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (Oct. 30 – Nov. 3) will debut a new exhibition area at Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina’s Pier South property: the aptly named Superyacht Village. Covering 3.5 acres, the property is one of the only areas in Fort Lauderdale able to host yachts up to 400 feet, making it the ideal spot for the show to expand. “The growing number of large yachts exhibiting at the show continues to attract affluent buyers and superyacht charter clients,” explains Andrew Doole, president of Informa U.S. Boat Shows. Aside from hosting some of the world’s largest yachts, the Superyacht Village will include exhibits from prominent shipyards, along with personal submarines, helicopters and other luxury items related to the cruising lifestyle. It will also host events like fine wine and Champagne tastings, plus the second-annual FLIBS Yacht Chef Competition. flibs.com

At 79 feet (including the elongated swim platform), the semicustom Extra 76 from ISA Yachts is an ideal “entry level” superyacht directed at cruisers who want the advantages of a larger vessel without the manning and maintenance of one. What really distinguishes this yacht is the space utilization: From the swim platform to the dining area, which is shaded by the overhang of the flying bridge, you get a remarkable 538 square feet of alfresco areas. It also features an extra-wide beam akin to what a 100-footer would have. It’s all wrapped in an athletic profile and is available to tailor to the way you like to live. extrayachts.com

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence

DAR designed by Luiz De Basto

BEHIND THE DESIGN

Luiz De Basto

“Boats and yachts are a perfect combination of two of my life passions—cars and architecture,” says Miami-based yacht designer Luiz De Basto, who grew up in Angola and Brazil before moving to the U.S. in 1990. Among his recent projects is the award-winning 295-foot DAR, which boasts nearly 4,306 square feet of glass, much of it floorto-ceiling. We caught up with De Basto to discuss.

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence

When did you first know you wanted to work in design? From a young age, I was intrigued by 3-D things—cars, houses, buildings, people—how to represent them and integrate the background. When I was about 7 or 8, I was creating houses out of paper that I had cut and folded into cubes. These weren’t just simple houses, they were L-shaped and U-shaped houses with roofs on top. I remember folding things to see how I could create complex shapes. That’s when I decided I wanted to become an architect.

IMAGES COURTESY OCEAN ALEXANDER/FOREST JOHNSON; LUIZ DE BASTO

You try to apply new glass technologies from outside of yachting for function and aesthetics. Why is that? I’ve always been intrigued by glass in the way it opens interiors and views to nature, yet at the same time, it protects what’s inside. Glass has evolved tremendously over the last 20 to 30 years; those are huge advances in technology that I think we have to take advantage of.

OCEAN ALEXANDER 45 DIVERGENCE

Making its debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February, the 45 Divergence is an aptly named departure for Ocean Alexander, which has long built large yachts and superyachts. It is the brand’s first outboardpowered vessel—a center console featuring four Mercury Verado outboards, no less—for a wind-in-your-hair experience. Divergence also has a patented door-within-a-door system that lets the bulwarks fold open. When they’re extended, the beam reaches 19 feet (versus the standard 14 feet). Equally noteworthy, you get to choose interior woods, upholstery and paint colors, along with accouterments for fishing or diving, yielding hundreds of different possible combinations. oceanalexander.com Length: 47 ft., 5 in. | Beam: 13 ft., 9 in. | Draft: 3 ft., 3 in. | Staterooms: 1 plus convertible dinette | Engine: Quadruple Mercury Verado 350s | Top Speed: N/A

Why do you think clients come to you? What sets you apart? I don’t like to repeat myself. I know where to push yacht design, not just in the technology, but in the lifestyle. People don’t go out on a boat for the same reason they go to a beach house. The mobility is very important—going places and exploring the surroundings. You have to understand that in order to propose new ideas. What are your thoughts about concept designs in yachting? Do they matter? Concepts are very important. We have to show people. There are a lot of concepts out there, but many of them don’t advance anything. I don’t just want to make balanced lines. I’m trying to go after a lifestyle and to propose new ways of enjoying nature.

WE CREATED JETASAP TO PROVIDE A SELF-SERVICE PLATFORM WHERE FLYERS CAN CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF THE CHARTER BOOKING PROCESS AND ALWAYS PAY EXACTLY WHAT AN OPERATOR CHARGES— AND NOT A PENNY MORE — Lisa Kiefer Sayer

” Lisa Kiefer Sayer, founder, JetASAP

A FRESH (AND FREE) TAKE ON FLYING PRIVATELY Through her all-new free charter booking service JetASAP, Lisa Kiefer Sayer is saving private flyers 10 to 50 percent on every flight. BY JARROD HOLLAND

isa Kiefer Sayer knows a thing or two about charter flight services. With 21 years in the aviation industry as a director of charter sales and a consultant, she’s sold thousands of private flights to companies, CEOs, VIPs and more. Recognizing a need for a self-service system that allows users to book private flights directly, Sayer put her knowledge and experience to work to launch the new smartphone app JetASAP. As the only platform to connect flyers directly with charter operators, JetASAP provides a powerful set of tools that has never before been offered. With full transparency, flyers can search for and book directly with the charter operator of their choice; they can select their aircraft type, determine exact pricing and even see the tail number and charter operator of the plane they choose. No brokers are involved (not traditionally the case when booking private flights), saving flyers anywhere from 10 to 50 percent per flight. Best of all, the app is completely free to use with no fees, commissions or membership costs. “There are a growing number of flyers who prefer to book their own travel directly, but the process of calling multiple operators and comparing quotes is time-consuming,” says Sayer. “We created JetASAP to provide a

64

self-service platform where flyers can control every aspect of the charter booking process and always pay exactly what an operator charges—and not a penny more.” JetASAP also offers a real-time chat system within the app that allows direct communication between flyers and charter operators at any point during the search and booking process. Flyers can ask questions anonymously and cross-shop different companies with all of the information needed right in front of them. Furthermore, JetASAP is the only platform that provides live charter quote pricing directly from operators. Other digital servicers typically provide a price estimate or an automated quote price, which can then fluctuate wildly when actually booking the chosen private plane. “Rather than trying to automate what continues to be a manual process that typically requires human intervention on the quoting side, we have simply found a way to use technology to facilitate the current process and streamline it for both the flyer and the operator,” says Sayer. “The JetASAP platform provides the much-needed link that makes directly booking a charter as simple as possible.” According to Sayer, JetASAP will officially launch Fall 2019. ONLY OUT OF ATTORNEYS ARE BOARD CERTIFIED *

LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO RECEIVE THIS ELITE DISTINCTION. www.BCA.law is a new online resource that takes the guesswork out of finding the expert lawyer you need by working exclusively with Board Certified Attorneys. We spoke with founder David B. Rothman, a Miami-based Board Certified criminal trial attorney who has practiced law for more than 40 years, to discover what makes being a Board Certified Attorney different from a being a regular attorney who passes the Florida Bar.

What makes a Board Certified Specialist an expert? While there are over 100,000 lawyers in our state (approximately 73,000 practicing), each of whom is a licensed member of The Florida Bar, only about 7 percent of the practicing attorneys are considered Board Certified Specialists. Only after being tested and vetted by The Florida Bar can these individuals call themselves experts in their field. To remain Board Certified, each attorney must apply and be approved for recertification every five years. Not incidentally, the mere fact a lawyer is Board Certified does not mean that he or she is more expensive than any other lawyer. Why did you and your partners form BCA? First, we wanted to educate people about the fact that only a very small percentage of Florida lawyers have been certified by The Florida Bar as experts in 27 practice areas, including civil trial, real estate, criminal trial, construction law, wills, trusts and estates, marital and family law and business litigation, to name a few. These experts are deemed Board

{

80

Certified Specialists. Secondly, we wanted to create a single place where the public could easily access and connect with a vetted list of Board Certified Specialists in every field. How does BCA help Board Certified Specialists? Five years ago, as I was working on my BCS recertification, I realized that as hard as I had worked to become and continue to be Board Certified, and as proud as I was that I was a Florida Board Certified Specialist, only one client in my decades of practice knew what Board Certification meant. I felt the public needed to know and understand what becoming Board Certified entails. But I’m a lawyer, not a businessman. That is where my BCA partners took over. Together, we have taken my idea and created a company that recruits and successfully markets Board Certified Attorneys so that people with important legal matters can easily find the expert attorney they are looking for. What differentiates BCA from other lawyer referral services? Remember, only lawyers certified by The Florida Bar as Board Certified Specialists can become members of BCA. I go back to what the difference is between a lawyer and a Board Certified Specialist: All of our listed attorneys have been tested and vetted by The Florida Bar as experts. That’s not a brag, it’s a fact.

For more information and to find the right attorney for you, visit www.BCA.law.

WHILE THERE ARE OVER 100,000 LAWYERS IN OUR STATE... EACH OF WHOM IS A LICENSED MEMBER OF THE FLORIDA BAR, ONLY ABOUT 7 PERCENT OF THE PRACTICING ATTORNEYS ARE CONSIDERED BOARD CERTIFIED SPECIALISTS.

BEFORE YOU REMARRY, DO THIS EMBARK ON YOUR NEXT LIFE PATH EQUIPPED WITH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING.

I

f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.

Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony. Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1 What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage. But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial wellbeing—at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2 If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows. Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage. Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about

it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2 Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. That’s why eight out of 10 women find it helpful to think about wealth along three different dimensions.2 Liquidity: The cash at your disposal, which you need for short-term expenses over the next three or so years. Longevity: Savings and investments you can use for longerterm needs, from the next four years into retirement. Legacy: The investments that will continue after you’re gone, and can help others with their needs. Thinking through these dimensions helps you sort out what you aim to accomplish now and in the future. What do you want your legacy to be? How will you achieve these things? Who are the people who matter most to you? Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for

some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key. Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership. Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come. SOCIAL MEDIA HAS REMOVED THE STIGMA THAT ONCE EXISTED. NOW, MEN ARE ACTIVELY GETTING TREATMENTS—AND THEY ARE EVEN PROUD TO POST ABOUT IT. — Dr. Daniel Careaga

Dr. Daniel Careaga

BODY OF WORK

With the opening of his new Coral Gables surgical center, Dr. Daniel Careaga of Careaga Plastic Surgery continues to help clients—women and men—look and feel their best.

P

lastic surgery is not just a science, it’s an art. And double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Careaga is unquestionably an artist. The Miamibased doctor has performed nearly 10,000 successful operations—with just as many happy clients. Not only is he highly attuned to patients’ goals, but he also keeps pace with current trends (because, despite the cost and commitment involved, some plastic surgery trends do come and go). But what’s one trend that is here to stay? Surgical procedures for men. “Social media has removed the stigma that once existed,” Careaga says. “Now, men are actively getting treatments—and they are even proud to post about it.” Popular surgical procedures for men include gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction), liposuction and eyelid surgery, according to Careaga, who, just as he does for his female

patients, considers respecting the body’s natural proportions as the No. 1 rule. “Men have a waist-to-hip ratio of about 1-to-1, so they should have the same width from the waist down to the hips,” he explains. “This is what creates a natural look, as opposed to something exaggerated that makes it very obvious something has been done.”

women: Will people know that I had work done? Will it be painful? Careaga assuages these worries with complete confidence. “We make things look natural for our patients, males included, so nobody can tell that they’ve had surgery. Secondly, we keep our patients comfortable, so the recovery goes smoothly with minimum downtime.”

Men are also seeking nonsurgical procedures such as neurotoxins (Botox and Dysport), fillers (Restylane) and laser treatments. “SculpSure is an amazing technology that burns fat without surgery, so it is very effective for love handles and double chins,” says Careaga. He also praises Emsculpt, the world’s first FDA-approved device that builds muscle mass, increasing abdominal muscle by 16 percent. “Men are doing this treatment at a higher rate than women,” he adds.

Of course, aside from choosing the right doctor, it’s also important to select the right facility. “The location where a patient opts to have his or her surgery is almost as important as the surgeon and anesthesiologist themselves,” Careaga says. “Careaga Plastic Surgery’s new stateof-the-art surgical center in Coral Gables allows me to give my patients the safest and most luxurious experience possible.”

The questions and concerns going into any procedure are the same for men and

aniela Saliba always knew she wanted to be a designer. When she was a young girl, she would draw furniture on the floor plans of Sunday’s newspaper ads. “I used to plan every detail,” she recalls. She has now been a part of the Miami interior design scene for over 19 years, channeling her Brazilian upbringing to mix unexpected styles, colors and textures while introducing a touch of informality into each space. She always maintains a direct line of contact with clients and personally takes care of each design detail from beginning to end. “My favorite part of the design process is when I feel I have achieved something that the client will love,” she says. “Sometimes it is important to ‘read in between the lines’ to understand their desires and to create a presentation that will surprise them.”

What design trends are you noticing nowadays? I am seeing lots of rattan, curved sofas, hues of green and indoor plants.

Are there any design rules you love to break? I love to break rules! But it is good to know them, so you know how to break them. What’s your go-to paint color? Benjamin Moore’s Calm OC-22 is a really nice off-white. Lately, I am also into greens, such as Benjamin Moore’s Lehigh Green HC-131. Who was the first designer to make an impression on you? Brazilian architect and designer Sig Bergamin. He creates a mix of furniture, objects, patterns, flowers, fabrics and art like no one else—just like magic! I simply love everything he touches.

Which local furnishing stores do you frequent? Artefacto (I’ve had the honor of participating in their Design House five times), Anima Domus because they represent great Italian brands, and stores in the Design District. Any specific piece of furniture on your wish list? A Mole lounge chair from Sergio Rodrigues. Actually, make that two! Tips to breathe new life into a room? Don’t be afraid to bring in colors. Please don’t paint everything gray! What’s next for Daniela Saliba Interiors? Hopefully, lots of new projects where I can continue to transform people’s houses into cozy homes.

ll great artists have mentors, and Canadian-born interior designer Roger Zwickel is no different. After graduating from the University of Manitoba in the early 1980s, Zwickel moved to New York, where he landed his first job as a junior designer at Patino/Wolf Associates. “Working with [acclaimed Cuban-born, NYC-based designer] Vicente Wolf was one of the highlights of my young career,” he says. Ten years later, Zwickel moved to Miami, and in 2002, he founded R Design Studio Inc., which specializes in highend residential projects, along with condo lobby and public space renovations, model apartments and executive offices.

Tell us about the aesthetics for your lobby projects. A condo lobby is an extension of a home, so it must be made warm and inviting through lighting, furnishings and beautiful textures, not only in fabrics, but in wallcoverings and other architectural details. Keeping equilibrium and harmony is a must. What’s your go-to paint color for creating the perfect neutral backdrop? Benjamin Moore Super White on walls with ceilings in matte finish from the Aura group and millwork in pearl finish is a formula that never fails.

What are some of your favorite art fairs to attend? We all brace ourselves for Art Basel Miami Beach. Several of the smaller fairs that piggyback onto the main event can be even more creative and stimulating. I also love Art Wynwood, which has a much more relaxed feel to it. What design trends are you most excited about? I love the marble- and concrete-looking porcelain and quartz products that are now available in large formats. They hold up better to wear and tear than natural stone. There are also beautiful wallcoverings that simulate wood and textiles. What are things you learned from your mentor Vicente Wolf that you still practice? Vicente taught me that challenging yourself is rewarding. Because of him, I strive to exceed clients’ expectations and to discover new solutions and products along the way.

How do you incorporate art in your projects? I have been very fortunate to curate many of my clients’ art collections with an array of paintings, sculptures and photography that I’ve acquired from my travels all around the world. What is your design philosophy? To provide as much sustainable design as possible, in a way that works with our client’s vision and budget. I always work with and include my clients throughout the design process, to ensure together we arrive at a solution that makes sense for them, while maintaining the highest level of quality. Do you have experience with “green” or sustainable design? As a LEED AP BD+C, I have the training and experience to guide our clients through the process of sustainable design. The Sanctuary Paradise House

Inspired by the “Organic American Style” of Frank Lloyd Wright, architect, Chayo Frank designed a home and garden that is a “Sanctuary Paradise” that is unique and extraordinary in every aspect. Located in the coveted neighborhood of Ponce-Davis, in Miami, Florida, the home was created to facilitate a tropical living style, rather than an aesthetic design. Surrounded by a sunken private garden, it boasts an extensive collection of some of the world’s rarest exotic tropical plants including a Weeping Ficus brought from Indonesia by Dr. David Fairchild in 1940. A juxtaposed structure of steel beams and columns encased in California Redwood, with large expanses of sliding glass walls, 25’ foot volume ceilings and a natural coral rock wall that delineates interior and exterior atmospheres, it allows for a connection and flow between the inviting interior spaces and the extraordinary landscape of the

surrounding gardens. A two-story open space floor plan is airy, comfortable and unrestricted. Meandering pathways, subterranean grottos, and a pool overlooking tropical waterfalls create a private Sanctuary Paradise that is great for entertaining or a serene lifestyle retreat. The design and use of natural materials found in this natural landscape transcends the norms of traditional architecture. This “Private World” resonates with an atmosphere of beauty and tranquility. Indeed a Sanctuary Paradise! 3 Bedrooms + Studio | 3 Bathrooms | 4,632 sq. ft. Corner Lot: 33,715 sq. ft. | 25’ Volume Ceilings Rare Exotic Tropical Botanical Garden 4895 N. T

he Biltmore Ball to Benefit the Coral Gables Community Foundation is a time-honored tradition for the City Beautiful. The black-tie fundraiser supports the pivotal outreach efforts of the foundation, which for nearly 30 years has served as a philanthropic conduit within the city by connecting individuals and corporations looking to positively impact the growth of the community. The foundation has helped youth, elderly and disabled residents through a range of services, from providing dental care to sponsoring cultural activities to awarding annual scholarships. Proceeds from the event will help fund these services and bolster ongoing support. “It’s a tremendous point of pride to unveil the latest edition of our gala—most especially in tandem with the Biltmore Hotel,” says Coral Gables Community Foundation Executive Director Mary Snow. “This year’s event will pay special tribute to Coral Gables, serving as a celebration of our city’s distinctive heritage and worldly roots.” Co-chaired by Sissy DeMaria Koehne and Lauren Harrison, this year’s gala will
