The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Quotes of the Season “Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are.” – Unknown “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”

F

– Dalai Lama

irst, let me start by sending out my heartfelt condolences to those who may have lost the life of a loved one. And I am not just referring to those we’ve lost to COVID-19. Let’s not forget those lost to heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, unforeseen accidents... Unfortunately, the list goes on.

“Peace is not something you wish for, it’s something you make.”

Additionally, as a small business owner, my empathy and compassion go out to those who have lost their businesses into which they put their heart, soul and savings, to those who have lost their jobs and to anyone who has lost their peace of mind, sanity, sense of security and spirit during these challenging times.

– Robert Fulghum “There are some things you can only learn in a storm.”

I’ve always had a strong work ethic, yet during these unprecedented times, I found myself working around the clock to implement new strategies that would help my clients survive and keep my team on board. I hope you will consider supporting these businesses that have been supportive of mine. With the power of reciprocity, we will not only survive during these times but thrive!

– Joel Osteen “Tough times never last, but tough people do.”

While the current climate of our country may be dampening people’s spirits, I have fortunately been gifted with the natural ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel— the rainbow after the storm. I come from humble beginnings; I am one of eight kids, raised by a single mother and was forced to face challenges early on. But my childhood challenges turned into adult resilience and adaptability, preparing me with internal strength and a positive attitude to be able to handle life’s inevitable turbulence. The following page highlights some of my tips to see the light, even in the darkest of days. I hope that these tips will help you shift your attitude and armor you with the strength and the optimism to see brighter days ahead. After all, this too shall pass, and in the end, you can come out stronger and ready to face life’s next storm. There will be another one on the horizon, but rather than try to avoid the waves of destruction, we should learn to ride them!

– Robert H. Schuller “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right, and evil doesn’t become good just because it’s accepted by a majority.“

TIPS FOR SEEING THE LIGHT, EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF DAYS Be aware. Do not take one day for granted. Life is not guaranteed.

Each day I wake up I am grateful that I did. I am aware that every second that goes by may be my last. I am not claiming I wake up every day with a pep in my step. But I try not to take one second of breath for granted. If I am feeling down or overwhelmed with the negative things that are happening either directly to me or in this world, I make a concerted effort to focus on the positive. This allows me to reset my state of emotion and get through hard times. Simply ask yourself: If today were your last day, would your attitude or your actions be different? Would you want your last breath to be spent angry, resentful or in sadness? While I am a fan of motivational quotes, they are not “yours.” Try writing down your own positive affirmations so that you personally connect with them and start living your life in the now.

Do not overload yourself with negative news (or people).

It is important to keep yourself informed so that you can make educated decisions. However, the source of your information must be reputable—otherwise, it is counterproductive. Negative news debilitates you; it paralyzes you and does nothing for the human spirit. Instead, put time and energy into things that make you happy and productive. Chances are, this will rub off on others, resulting in a more positive future for everyone!

Look behind for gratitude. Look ahead for inspiration. Look within for happiness.

I live in a constant state of gratitude. How? I look behind and see that someone else is dealing with something worse than I am, and it puts things into perspective. Looking behind is also a good exercise for you to reflect on past hardships that eventually passed and, more than likely, made you stronger. I look ahead for inspiration. Someone is always going to be ahead of you. It is fine to be inspired by these people—it keeps you on your toes and raises your performance. But be aware of jealousy, as it will put you on a path of perpetual dissatisfaction. Continue to improve in all areas, but know that the secret to living a happier and more joyous life is to be kinder to yourself. Look within and love where you are and who you are now.

Love yourself.

I love my family, my friends, my clients and supporters, kind strangers and good people. But my greatest love is inside me. This is not selfish. Think about it: On a plane, you are instructed to put the oxygen mask on yourself before anyone else—even your child. Why? If you are not alive, how can you help them? Similarly, if you do not love yourself, how will you be a role model? The first step to loving yourself is to stop measuring your self-love by material things you have acquired or where you are in life. These can be taken away in seconds. Focus on loving yourself from within—your core character. One of my favorite songs is by Whitney Houston: “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” I couldn’t agree more.

Other Simple Steps to Take

Be kind. Acts of kindness are win-win. You benefit just as much as, if not more than, the recipient. Be open-minded. Tunnel vision is judgmental. It creates a poor assessment of others and evokes negative emotions that usually lead to dissatisfaction with the world, your life and your friends, among other things. Be understanding. Not everyone sees things the same way you do. Thinking your way is the only way prevents you from genuine growth and self-compassion. Be forgiving. People who stay angry suffer from holding on to resentment and negative thoughts. Be patient. This one does not come as naturally to me, and I continue to practice. Patient people seem to be more at peace. Be honest. Truth, while it hurts, can set you free of angst and anxiety about the unknown. Knowing the truth will help speed up acceptance and the healing process, if needed. Be equal. Practice the Golden Rule. Imagine if we all did unto others as we would want done unto ourselves. The world would be a much kinder and more peaceful place. Be selfless. Give back and pay it forward. It is truly soup for the soul. EDITOR’S LETTER

SUMMER 2020 CEO/Publisher Lynette Janac Editor-in-Chief/Design Director Sherri Balefsky Hanson Client & Community Relations Manager Tyler Anderson Administrative Assistant Patty Rivers Photo by Evan Rich

I

f someone had told me just after our spring edition went to print on March 1 that the world was about to be turned upside down, I never would have believed them! When the first wave of “lockdowns” began, my team and I had just started working on our annual destinations-themed summer issue. At first, we were hesitant to continue—it felt weird to be making an entire issue dedicated to travel when the world was reeling from a pandemic. But that’s exactly why we decided to move forward with it (albeit with some modifications). As individuals and as a community, we have faced many challenges, disappointments and losses over the last few months. While it’s important to acknowledge these setbacks, it’s equally as important to stay positive, to be flexible, and to face those challenges head on. It is in that spirit that our Positive Outlook Destinations Guide (page 37) came to life. Our goal is to encourage you to look forward to a brighter future. After all, the ruins at Machu Picchu, the ornate cathedrals in Italy, the sheer natural beauty of the Greek Isles, and the many other places we’ve highlighted in our special feature are not going anywhere! And when it is safe to travel again, I hope you will use this guide as a trusted resource for your planning. In the meantime, why not take advantage of all that we have to offer here in South Florida? For our Become a Tourist in Your Backyard – Support Local Businesses feature (page 49), we tapped experts and tour guides from Miami, Broward, Palm Beach and the Florida Keys to share their picks for what there is to see, do and explore locally— from historic landmarks and natural wonders to active pursuits and cultural offerings. Even lifelong residents will discover something about their city that they didn’t know! I hope this issue inspires you in many ways: to be optimistic, to reignite your wanderlust, to discover hidden gems in your neighborhood, to support local businesses (who need your help now more than ever) and to find compassion for others. When we turn challenges into opportunities, we become stronger and better prepared for whatever else life throws at us next. I wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy summer!

Nina Johnson Gallery presents recent work by Detroitbased artist Jonathan Rajewski in the new exhibition Ordinary Spheres, which consists of hundreds of spheres arranged on the gallery floor in a grid-like solar system. The spheres are made with found materials such as dog hair, beeswax, sand, cigarette butts, socks, utility bills and eggshells. Individually, each is the result of a specific moment in time for the artist; collectively, they create a portrait of his thoughts, interactions, movements and environments. THAI-STYLE LOBSTER SALAD

Dragonfly Izakaya’s Charcoal Arepas

LOBSTER BAR SEA GRILLE

KEY INGREDIENTS: LOBSTER, BELGIAN ENDIVES, PASSION FRUIT VINAIGRETTE South Florida’s summers call for lighter fare, which is why Lobster Bar Sea Grille, part of the award-winning Atlanta-based Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, is just the place to go to indulge the senses. “I like eating super-light in the summer, especially since moving to Florida, where summers get so hot,” says Executive Chef Jeff Pfeiffer. “The Thaistyle lobster salad is bright, healthy and has a great balance of flavor. The umami effect comes between the tart passion fruit, the bitter endives, the salty peanuts and the ocean flavor from the lobster.” 450 E. Las Olas

CHARCOAL AREPAS

KEY INGREDIENTS: BRAISED BEEF, MOJITO CILANTRO, OKINAWA SUGAR BUTTER

From the innovative flavors to the industrial-style decor in the fish market, Doral’s Dragonfly Izakaya is a veritable sensory explosion. And that is exactly what Culinary Director Ray Hideaki Leung wanted to highlight when his team introduced several new dishes earlier this year. “At Dragonfly, our food is our second language, so it was important for us to develop new items that celebrate the similarities between the Latin cuisine that Miami loves and the authentic Japanese dishes for which Dragonfly is known,” he says. “The charcoal arepas are one of the ways we’re sharing our culinary vision with the community.” 5241 NW 87th Ave., Doral; 305.222.7447;

Mary Brickell Village’s newest eatery, Moxie’s, is the first Florida location for the popular restaurant brand, which has over 60 locations in Canada and three in Texas. Warmer temps call for light, fresh fare, which makes this guacamole a must-try for guests and a favorite of Head Chef Jimmy Jaques. “This is a great summer recipe and it’s easy to make for yourself or double up for your friends,” he says. “It’s the perfect afternoon snack for the patio, backyard or poolside. Just don’t forget to pair it with a couple of lime margaritas!”

CAPRESE RAVIOLI DŌMA WYNWOOD

KEY INGREDIENTS: RICOTTA, MOZZARELLA, TOMATO SAUCE Wynwood’s upscale Italian eatery Dōma delights diners’ palates with both long-standing Italian favorites and modern plates. The caprese ravioli is a favorite for Executive Chef Marco Giugliano and owner/general manager Luca Lomonaco, both of whom are Italian natives. And it’s surprisingly easy to make, requiring very few ingredients. “This recipe is from Capri, which is famous for its delicacy,” says Lomonaco. “It has a simple sauce made with fresh San Marzano tomatoes to ensure that it doesn’t overpower the pasta.” The dish is currently part of the restaurant’s Miami Spice dinner menu. Sunset in Oia, Santorini

Welcome to Santorini, a fascinating destination where a white-washed cliffside dotted with bright-blue domes meets endless vistas of shimmering seas and spellbinding sunsets. DUBROVNIK BY SHERRI BALEFSKY HANSON

Thanks in part to the HBO series Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik has become one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism destinations; but even if you’ve never seen the show, a visit to this fairy-tale-like locale should still be at the top of your travel bucket list. The Magic City MIAMI

Until the dawn of the 20th century, Miami was considered by many to be uninhabitable, remote and inundated with mosquitoes, alligators and hurricanes. Fast-forward to today, Miami is a thriving urban metropolis and a major tourism destination for travelers from all over the world who come to visit its historical, cultural and natural wonders, including ones many locals haven’t experienced. Here are a few activities to get you started. CURATED BY KEVIN DORAN, PRIVATETOURSMIAMI.COM

The Miami skyline includes contributions by some of the world’s most gifted architects. Pérez Art Museum Miami by Herzog & de Meuron, for example, is a perfect modern design for Miami’s subtropical climate: environmentally conscious, poised on the water’s edge and open to the breeze with giant vertical planters suspended 70 feet overhead. Across the street sits One Thousand Museum by the late Zaha Hadid, a futuristic 62-story residential tower with curvaceous geometry and innovative engineering that bridges the present to the future. 1103 & 1000 Biscayne

The Rubell Museum, which houses one of the largest private collections of contemporary art in the country, has a new home in a converted rice warehouse in Allapattah. The space includes 40 galleries, various event spaces, an indoor-outdoor restaurant and the largest art research library in South Florida. The decision to relocate is as bold as the Rubells’

original move to Wynwood in the early 1990s. Perhaps this will inspire yet another neighborhood transformation in the industrial area of Allapattah. 1100 NW 23rd St., Miami;

North Miami’s Ancient Spanish Monastery was originally completed in 1141 in a town in northern Spain. In 1925, the cloisters and the monastery’s outbuildings were purchased by William Randolph Hearst and meticulously deconstructed, packed and shipped to New York in 11,000 separate numbered boxes. Suspected of contamination on arrival, the boxes were emptied, packing materials were burned and the stones were carelessly returned to the boxes without regard for numbering. There they remained for 27 years until a new owner purchased the lot for $1.5 million and shipped them to Miami. The puzzle was reassembled, without instructions, in 19 months. 16711 W. Dixie

FUN FACTS Long before the Miami Beach waterfront became a mainstay for beachgoers, it was simply stretches of white sand, punctuated by the occasional “house of refuge” that served Floridians at the turn of the 19th century. Today, just as lifeguards have doubled down on their duties, so too have Miami’s lifeguard stations. The change didn’t happen immediately, but in 1995, three years after Hurricane Andrew razed a number of those towers, architectural firm William Lane designed some pretty eccentric replacements. The new towers—in all their technical glory—became iconic images of postAndrew Miami. Twenty years later, Lane returned to the beachfront to overhaul the dated towers. The 2015 towers—just as quirky and vibrant as their predecessors—are the stations you see on the beach today. SOUTH FLORIDA LUXURY GUIDE

PALM BEACH

Everyone knows the glitzy beaches, the exclusive golf clubs and the luxury boutiques, but there is much more to Palm Beach than many stereotypes would lead us to believe. In fact, when Henry Morrison Flagler arrived in Palm Beach in the late 1800s, the area was deep in the Florida wilderness, much of which is still preserved to this day. He also set the stage for the region to become a major tourism locale, where the past seamlessly merges with the present. CURATED BY RICK ROSE, PALMBEACHVACATIONRENTALS.COM

When Henry Flagler first arrived in Palm Beach, he was purportedly enchanted by the tropical vegetation and thousands of coconut palms surrounding the Lake Worth Lagoon. It was here that he opened one of the grandest hotels of the Gilded Age, the Royal Poinciana Hotel, in 1894. In order to make the resort accessible, he set out to extend the Florida East Coast Railroad down from Jacksonville to Palm Beach (and later Miami and the Keys), opening up the entire coast to development. Though the Royal Poinciana itself was torn down in the 1930s, visitors today can still see many landmarks from that era, including Whitehall, Flagler’s former winter estate that is now home to the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. 1 Whitehall Way, Palm Beach;

NOTICE THE HIDDEN GEMS While much attention is paid to photo ops at the Southernmost Point buoy, few notice the small concrete building just to its left known as the Cable Hut. This was the third international cable run from Key West to Havana; the first was installed in 1867 for telegrams. 400 South St., Key West

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s “Christ of the Deep” statue

FUN FACTS The Florida Keys are a diver and snorkeler’s haven: The 120-mile-long island chain is home to the only living coral barrier reef in the United States, which is protected as part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Since 1981, more than 23 artificial reefs have been created in the waters off the Keys, mainly through the sinking of ships, to provide additional homes to many corals, tropical fish and other marine life. TRENDING ART

ONE OF THE KEY ELEMENTS IN APPRECIATING A WORK OF ART IS UNDERSTANDING NOT ONLY THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT BUT ALSO, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE PERSON WHO CREATED IT. — Yubal Márquez Fleites

Yubal Márquez Fleites, founder, Arte Collective

THE TRAVELING CURATOR

Art curator and gallerist Yubal Márquez Fleites, founder of Arte Collective, travels the world to find a deeper connection with both the artists he represents and the clients he serves.

P

assion. Energy. Appreciation. These are the three words that characterize curator, gallerist and art advisor Yubal Márquez Fleites, founder of Arte Collective, a contemporary and fine art gallery with seasonal locations in New York, Miami and the Hamptons.

Carruyo and Patricia Pernalete of Move365 Art,” Márquez says. “It symbolizes the union between man and woman, contemplating their feminine and masculine aspects, the energy that flows between them and their journey in life together.”

“Passion has been the guiding light and positive force that motivates me to love the process of creating as well as those who create,” Márquez explains. “Energy is the fuel that drives that passion and appreciation for the opportunities and blessings bestowed upon this wonderful journey.”

“For me, one of the key elements in appreciating a work of art is understanding not only the inspiration behind it but also, and more importantly, the person who created it,” Márquez adds. “This permits me to become the voice of the artist when they are not present and to transmit the true message they want to convey about their art beyond what the eyes can see.”

For as long as he can remember, Márquez has been connected to art and creativity (his mother jokes that his “curatorial” eye began in grade school with his admiration for Jean-Michel Basquiat). It is this inherent passion that explains why Arte Collective brings its artists to multiple locations. In addition to his base in Brooklyn and gallery in South Florida, Márquez spends his summers in the Hamptons, periodically traveling the world to further discover new artists and their cultures and to share those findings with others. “I’ve had the opportunity to participate in an array of art fairs and exhibitions throughout the United States and other parts of the globe,” Márquez says, adding that he’s met and worked with artists from countries throughout North, Central and South America, as well as in Europe and Asia. “Traveling with the artworks to multiple locations helps me connect with a new audience that shares our passion for art—and to take them on their own journey to the countries where the artists are from.” His most recent adventure took him to India, where he personally delivered a special gift for his friends Riya Sharma and Tirth Dave’s wedding. “I presented them with a beautiful sculpture by artists Yenny 58

Márquez creates the same intimate connection with his clients. “I adore connecting with my clients and meeting new ones; the energy that brings us together is always incredibly special. From start to finish, I work alongside them. Oftentimes, I personally deliver and install the artworks they acquire.” These intimate connections characterize Márquez both personally and professionally. “I reference the process of selecting a work of art to the moment when we feel connected to someone we like, or the time when we meet our significant others,” he explains. “We know there is something that immediately draws our attention, like a natural magnetism. In the beginning, it’s a mystery, but our instinct is telling us they are worth it. They are now home with us, sharing new times, making new memories and, hopefully, they will be part of our lives for a very long time to come.”

READ THIS: BEFORE YOU HIRE YOUR TAX ATTORNEY DID YOU KNOW? There are over 101,000 lawyers in Florida.

DAVID M. GARVIN, P.A. BOARD CERTIFIED TAX LAWYER CRIMINAL TAX ATTORNEY LLM IN TAXATION

Not all lawyers who pass the Florida Bar are Board Certified. Only 4.7% are Florida Board Certified across 26 areas of concentration. Less than 0.2% are Board Certified in Tax.

David M. Garvin has represented and successfully defended clients in federal criminal and tax matters throughout the United States for over 35 years. His successes have earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the nation’s respected criminal tax attorneys. His practice concentrates on white-collar crime and tax fraud defense, including tax evasion.

The IRS boasts that over 90% of the criminal tax cases indicted result in a conviction.

ASK THE EXPERT

If you believe that you may be the target of a criminal tax investigation, DO NOT make the mistake of speaking with IRS agents without your lawyer. You have the absolute right to know what the outcomes have been of the lawyer’s past criminal tax trials.

Will hiring a well-known tax attorney with a big reputation raise a red flag with IRS Special Agents, causing them to assume I must be guilty of something? IRS Special Agents already have formed their opinions when they have identified the target of their investigation. Retaining the best criminal tax lawyer available with a proven jury trial track record shows that you are serious about your liberty and your innocence. Having a Board Certified attorney may also give the Department of Justice, Tax Division pause before authorizing a borderline case for prosecution.

OUTCOMES OF TRIALS OF DAVID M. GARVIN*

I know a very good criminal lawyer. They told me that they would associate a tax lawyer to assist them if they are retained to handle my criminal tax case. Is this the best protocol? There are many good criminal lawyers who concentrate on federal cases. However, there are very few that also concentrate their practices on federal tax matters. During a criminal tax trial, the government will have IRS agents and other tax experts testify. A lawyer who does not have a great deal of knowledge regarding tax laws will be at a disadvantage at trial. This problem is not resolved by associating a tax lawyer because only one lawyer can examine a witness at one time. Furthermore, most tax lawyers concentrate their practices on civil tax issues. They do not have heavy jury trial experience because tax court cases do not have juries. If possible, try to locate a lawyer that concentrates on criminal tax cases.

United States v. S.G. (Not Guilty) United States v. J.M. (Not Guilty) United States v. J.R. (Not Guilty) United States v. N.M. (Not Guilty) United States v. D.A. (Not Guilty) United States v. T.E. (Not Guilty) United States v. R.R. (Not Guilty) United States v. C.U. (Not Guilty) *Each case is decided on its own unique facts. Past results do not indicate future results.

If IRS Special Agents arrive at my business, should I speak with them so that I do not give the impression that I have something to hide? IRS Special Agents have already done research on the person that they request to interview and will intentionally not give advance notice. You should not agree to be interviewed without a few days to think it over and to have your lawyer present. Politely decline, get their business cards, and tell them your lawyer will call them.

What does being Board Certified mean? Only after being tested and vetted by The Florida Bar can these individuals call themselves experts in their field. To remain Board Certified, each attorney must apply and be approved for recertification every five years.

BRIGHTER HORIZONS

Despite some global economic uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, local experts remain optimistic about the state of South Florida’s real estate market. BY MICHELE MARIN

Y

ear-round beautiful weather and a lack of state income tax have historically made South Florida a real estate haven. And while the global pandemic has caused uncertainty in so many areas, one thing remains: People want to live in Florida. With low interest rates and a low inventory, now is the time to buy or sell a home. But how does the current climate affect these decisions? We spoke with Peter Ortega, a broker associate with Keller Williams Miami Beach and 2020 president of the Miami Association of Realtors’ Young Professionals Network, and Sharon Lindblade, a Realtor with Century 21 Hansen Realty and 2020 Broward president of the Miami Association of Realtors, to find out. What advice do you have for those navigating the local real estate market during these unprecedented times? Ortega: As we navigate these uncharted waters, one thing is clear: Consumers need their trusted real estate professionals more than ever. We understand the local market because we are in the trenches day in and day out. Individuals who think they can do it on their own will face many unnecessary challenges and headaches. Lindblade: Although times are challenging, there are a lot of positives on which we can focus. Going into this pandemic, we had an extremely strong economy, unemployment was at an all-time low and interest rates were the best they’d ever been. People will continue to buy and sell homes for many of the same reasons.

people get back to work? When will a vaccine be available? The median home price right now is 8 percent higher than it was a year ago, and 73 percent of sellers have not reduced home prices. Jumbo loans may not be working, but many luxury properties are still luring cash buyers. Although these higher-end properties may remain on the market longer than median-priced homes, sales continue to happen. What tips do you have for homeowners who are looking to buy or sell right now? Ortega: Whether you are looking to buy or sell, this is the perfect time to jump into the market. If you are buying, I recommend that you take advantage of the lowest interest rates that we have experienced in modern history. If you are selling, price it correctly and take advantage of the low inventory levels. This can only mean higher selling prices and more money in your pocket. It’s also getting harder for our buyers to qualify for loans, so I recommend getting your property on the market today to take advantage of qualified buyers before they disappear. Lindblade: Inventory is low, so if you are in the market for a home, don’t expect to find a steal or big discounts. If you see a home that you like, move on it! For homeowners thinking about selling, now is the time! There are serious buyers out there ready and able to make the sale.

THE EXPERTS

What do you think will transpire in the real estate market in the next six months? In the next year? Ortega: We currently have a shortage of well-priced inventory that is causing an increase in offers on the same properties. I attribute this to our friends in the Northeast and other high-tax states. As a native Californian, ex-New Yorker and 11 years living in the Sunshine State, I can say with confidence that there is no place like South Florida. We offer an attractive lifestyle and are the top market for international buyers. For those reasons, I believe that we will fare better than the rest of the country over the next six to 12 months. Lindblade: What happens in the next six to 12 months depends on several factors: How quickly will the market bounce back? When will 82

TAME YOUR MANE

Mane mishaps got you down? Make a mess of your tresses? We’ve got insider tips on how to heal your hair post-quarantine thanks to Danny Jelaca, whose eponymous Miami Beach salon and spa specializes in haircuts, color, highlights, texturizing treatments, skin care services and more. BY LYNETTE JANAC, NEW CLIENT ADVOCATE

Get to Know...

W

hen it comes to beauty maintenance, quarantine left us no choice but to fend for ourselves. And, if you are like me, you undoubtedly made a mess of your tresses! Plagued with the perpetual growth of my gray hair, I decided to take matters into my own hands using over-the-counter hair dye. One hour later (and a stained countertop and bathroom door!), I realized that I’d made my hair even worse than before. In my attempt to fix and lighten up the dull, muddy brown mess I’d created, I’d damaged the health of my hair. Desperate, I started researching “hair doctors.” And after reading many positive articles about Danny Jelaca, I reached out to see if he could bring my hair back to life. Six hours later, thanks to Danny’s dry haircut technique and colorist Deborah Sabella’s masterful coloring skills—and their patience in reviving my delicate hair with the utmost care and dedication—I left the salon a new and happier person! Normally, I would not share my “before” photo because I would be too embarrassed. However, I think that you need to see the before-and-after in order to believe in their magic

COLOR CORRECTION TIPS

BY DANNY JELACA @dannyjelacahair

BY DEBORAH SABELLA @sabella.stylist

My hair is fried. How can I get it back in shape? I suggest the Leonor Greyl hair spa treatments with lyophilized plant essence. These treatments work to restore hair and solve almost any problem. The Masque Quintessence treatment is fabulous as well.

After attempting to color my hair, I have created multiple shades. How can you fix this without ruining my hair? We can use a gentle color remover for recently colored hair and work on correcting the base. Any uneven tones can be blended with baby lights.

How often should I wash my hair? That depends. Generally, twice a week. But each individual is different, and this is advice I give best after learning about your hair type.

Can you convert me from brunette to blonde in one visit without damaging my hair? Yes, as long as your hair is healthy. Otherwise, it may require a few visits accompanied by hair therapy treatments.

Will layers help my thin hair look fuller? Again, that depends. I need to work with an individual and feel their hair to make the best decision. Generally, keeping hair one length makes it fuller. You can give it movement and make it look layered by playing with light angling and a soft perimeter. What can I do to prevent hair loss and thinning? Typically, you lose over 125 hairs a day. But controlling stress is the No. 1 thing you can do to stop hair loss. I recommend deep breaths and meditation. As a Band-Aid, I recommend Nutrafol vitamin supplements.

How long have you been doing hair? What brings you the most joy in what you do? Twenty-five years. I love seeing people happy and making them feel beautiful from the inside out.

Does hair color have a “season”? During the summer, I recommend going a bit lighter and warmer with added blonde on the surface. In the fall, I like to use warmer tones like gold, red and auburn. Winter is deeper and cooler and spring is lighter and cooler.

What is your specialty? I developed a unique approach to dry haircutting that incorporates invisible layers and involves fanning the hair through the comb and utilizing gravity. I also have the ability to work with hair growth patterns and personalize each cut. What makes you look at a person and know what hairstyle is best for them? I am a painter and pencil sketch artist. I have always had a flair for balance and impeccable taste. What made you open your own salon? After working with respected high-end celebrity salons and owners, I felt I had the image and something to contribute to the industry, the South Pointe neighborhood and the world. I wanted to hand-pick the talent and set the mood for a high-end experience and a boutique Madison Avenue approach to hair care. I have specialists on staff at the highest levels and I carry luxury brands such as Leonor Greyl Paris.

What makes you different from other colorists? I specialize in hair revival to ensure the true beauty of the color can be appreciated. All of our colorists personalize colors to each client. We don’t use the same systems or toner on everyone.

ABOUT ME

I am an architect, a writer and a cook at heart, and I enjoy helping people live their best lives. When I’m not in the kitchen creating tasty soups, I am inspiring love and happiness in others through my motivational podcasts. A busy mom of two, I balance work and home life through traveling, eating right and practicing yoga. Plus, I recently started taking flying lessons to become a pilot!

SOUP IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL Learning to Let Go ... and Go with the Flow BY ANA CASTANO

Architect, Writer, Pilot, Cook at Heart Creator of The Healing Soup Eatery – Coming Soon Life is not always in our control, which can lead to uncertainty. Many people try to control the uncontrollable, but this just leaves them feeling anxious and stressed. I have found a way to let go of this control and to instead just go with the flow, letting things occur the way they present themselves. As a result, I have been able to live a much more peaceful and joyous life. As we recently found ourselves faced with the challenges of a global pandemic, my philosophy on how to approach life’s curveballs has proven to be even more effective. All of us were forced to make changes to our paths that we’d been comfortably controlling. Just a few months ago, I was getting ready to launch The Healing Soup, a bistro designed to match specific ingredients in soup to individuals’ needs. I was searching for the perfect spot to lay down roots with a quaint, zen decor in mind. But then the unforeseeable happened and, like many other small business owners, I had to switch gears. Because of my spirituality and “go with the flow” attitude, I was able to pivot without hesitation. With social distancing now being a new normal, my vision of a quaint, zen bistro has shifted to an open-air eatery close to the Midtown/Wynwood area, allowing my passion for healing people with food to live

on. I have already contacted local growers of organic produce to source the eatery, where I will create opportunities for small groups to reserve a VIP room so that they can experience the connection with their food that will be tailored to their individual needs. Food from the earth fuels the body. Not only can eating according to your deficiency make you feel better, but certain foods can actually boost your mood and increase serotonin. My extensive research has found that blood-type diets along with eating plans such as glutenfree, dairy-free ketogenic, vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian can help those with health conditions such as high blood pressure, celiac disease, inflammatory disease, allergies and more. It is my passion to help cure human ailments through nutrition. After all, it’s said, “You are what you eat.” I encourage everyone to open their minds to uncontrollable circumstances. Don’t try to always control the outcome. I assure you that with this attitude, you will live in more peace and harmony.

So the next time life hands you lemons, make your choices endless: Make lemonade, make lemon pound cake, make whatever it is your heart desires! You’ll be surprised at how life can turn around when you change your way of thinking—something you do have control of!

I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO OPEN THEIR MINDS TO UNCONTROLLABLE CIRCUMSTANCES...YOU’LL BE SURPRISED AT HOW LIFE CAN TURN AROUND WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR WAY OF THINKING—SOMETHING YOU DO HAVE CONTROL OF!

TOP TIPS FOR FLAWLESS SKIN Michelle O’Neill shares her best tips and favorite skin care products.

Use antioxidants every morning to boost the effects of sunscreen and ďŹ ght free radicals. I love products with green tea, such as Replenix’s Power of Three Serum.

AGED TO PERFECTION

What if you could turn back the hands of time and look years younger? While science hasn’t found a way to stop the aging process altogether, there have been a lot of breakthroughs in ways to slow it down. Just ask Michelle O’Neill, board-certified physician assistant and founder of Miami Beach Laser & Aesthetics, who helps her patients meet their skin care goals with customized treatment plans. We sat down with Michelle to find out how we can “love the skin we are in for years to come. BY MICHELE MARIN

What advice do you have for those on the journey to self-preservation? My best tips would be: 1) Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 to protect against UVA and UVB rays. 2) Eat clean. Consuming too much sugar breaks down collagen and elastin. 3) Get your beauty sleep! Aim for at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night. This is when the skin renews itself. 4) Throw CYC[ VJG EKICTGVVGU UOQMKPI IKXGU [QW Ć‚PG lines and wrinkles. Why is it important to start the anti-aging process early? We refer to this as “preLWXGPCVKQP q +H [QW UVCTV RTGXGPVKPI Ć‚PG NKPGU and wrinkles earlier in life, fewer will form. Using a good skin care line and undergoing procedures that stimulate collagen and promote cell turnover are key. What would you say is the most underrated treatment that patients should consider? I am a huge fan of laser skin rejuvenation. 3 Use a retinol 3. like SkinMedica’s Age Defense Retinol Complex 1.0, which promotes cell turnover and ďŹ ghts ďŹ ne lines and wrinkles.
