s CEO of Eclectic Elements, a full service interior design center, Monica Suleski is renowned for delivering exquisite furnishings with sophisticated design elements. Her clientele includes noted designers, architectural firms, Fortune 500 companies, celebrities, and more. Whether designing a new home for a client or planning one of her famous parties at her own home, Monica relies on the power of scent to create the perfect first impression. “You get 30 seconds to capture someone’s attention. Instant wow factor is a must. Scent, like design, sets the mood whether designing a home or throwing a party. Collaborating with Aroma360 to scent homes and events is the key to achieving synergy among all aspects of the space,” Suleski explains. Aroma360’s library of over 100 scents makes creating virtually any desired vibe possible. “When my clients and I collaborate with the Aroma360 team to choose a scent, we consider how we want to feel and test various scents to find the one that sets the right tone. Once a scent is selected, Aroma360’s Whole Home Scenting System is installed via the home’s HVAC closets, a system that ensures zero interference with the home’s aesthetic.” she adds. For events, Aroma360 also offers various diffusers to suit any space, from tents to ballrooms. “Home scenting has a powerful effect on our daily lives,” explains Farah Abassi, Aroma360’s Founder and Chief Aromochologist. “Each individual has a unique energy they envision for their home and we work together to find the perfect scent to achieve that emotional response. Working with Monica and her clients to bring the art of scent into their homes and events is hugely rewarding.”

have to e grateful for. could fill this entire page up and then some with all the things I am grateful for. Even on my darkest days, I know that there are many people who are suffering way worse than I have ever imagined. While it makes me sad to know others are suffering, it reminds me of how good I have it.

3. Give back. Helping those who are less fortunate is essential in leading a happier

life. Whether you choose to do so in time or in money, you should make a point to get involved with a charity in 2020. But it doesn’t stop there. Some of the easiest ways to give back are simple acts of kindness, such as helping someone carry their groceries, letting a car into your lane, opening doors for people, giving compliments, saying hello or sharing a smile. ou will see that your ind gestures will re ect ac onto you.

inter isn’t just coming, South Florida; it is here in full swing, and things are heating up fast. Not only do we immediately kick off December with Miami Art Week, but Super Bowl LIV comes to us in early February, followed by the South Beach Wine & Food Festival later that month. In between, there’s sure to be plenty of holiday cheer as we ring in a new decade. Lucky for you, this issue will guide you through all of it in true luxury fashion.

We start off with our Guide to Art Week (page 45), a neighborhood-by-neighborhood roundup of the top fairs, can’t-miss exhibitions and must-attend events, plus places to relax and refuel in between. This year, we had the opportunity to interview Martina Navratilova, who isn’t just a sports icon, she’s a seasoned artist who creates magnificent works using tools she’s very familiar with: tennis balls and a racket. Her collaboration with Warren Henry Auto Group on a special art car, which is debuting during Art Week at a private event, is the focus of our Art in Motion feature (page 58). This issue also includes our annual Holiday Gift Guide (page 115), which offers plenty of inspiration to find that perfect gift for everyone on your list—and maybe even a few for yourself! And if you’re looking for a wow-worthy ensemble to wear to an upcoming holiday event, be sure to check out our Style section (Page 71), which features stunning looks by local designer Mayda Cisneros. From everyone at South Florida Luxury Guide, we wish you a safe, happy and healthy new year!

A WARM WELCOME Miami’s newest restaurants are heating up just in time for the winter season. BY BECKY RANDEL Papi Steak

736 First St., Miami Beach; 305.800.7274; papisteak.com

BIENVENIDOS A CHICA A successful restaurant in Las Vegas is no easy feat, but that is exactly what Chef Lorena Garcia accomplished with Chica at The Venetian Resort. Now, the Miami-born chef brings that same celebrated cuisine back to her hometown with a 10,000-square-foot restaurant in the space previously occupied by Soyka. Rather than focus on one type of Latin cuisine, Chica weaves together flavors from across the region, including Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Peru, honoring each culinary tradition in one menu. BELIEVE THE HYPE

South of Fifth’s Papi Steak from David Grutman’s Groot Hospitality and David “Papi” Einhorn is one of the most buzzed-about openings in town, having already hosted the likes of J. Lo, Drake and other A-list clientele. An ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood, the space features red velvet seating, hardwood tables and walls adorned in exotic floral print. Einhorn, who has already won over diners at Grutman’s Brickell hot spot Komodo, taps into his Jewish upbringing for menu items such as latkes and chicken schnitzel and combines them with his love for barbecue and steak. The wagyu pastrami is a house favorite, and the signature 32-ounce kosher-style rib-eye is one for the books.

EYE OF THE TIGER

Tigertail + Mary’s Broccolini Pizza

Tigertail + Mary, the latest from Michael Schwartz’s Genuine Hospitality Group, taps into what locals love most about the Grove—a neighborhood vibe in a laid-back setting. The chef hits these notes perfectly, combining them with a menu focused on fresh vegetables, local seafood, pizza, pasta and meat from animals raised with care. Schwartz also brought in the team from Bar Lab (Broken Shaker, The Anderson) to create a refreshing botanical cocktail menu. Don’t miss Sunday brunch, where there’s a lineup of house-made bottled bloody marys just waiting to be enjoyed. 3321 Mary St.,

SINNERS WELCOME Flashy openings in Miami Beach and Wynwood have become the norm, so it’s a nice surprise when a cozy neighborhood like Miami Shores gets one of its own. The new industrial-chic Sins Gastrobar is just that place. The menu is designed around the seven deadly “sins,” broken into categories like Tiny Sins (small bites), No Regrets (healthy options), Forgiven Sins from the wood fired grill and uilty leasures (desserts). Favorite dishes include the Gluttony brisket and bacon burger and the slow-cooked short ribs, which are cooked for 48 hours in a red wine reduction. 9835 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores;

Season as you see fit. Let sit 30 minutes. Place in shallow pot and add the palm of herbs, crushed garlic cloves and blended oil. Place on the eye of a burner and slowly let it poach on just the pilot light. (The low heat keeps the texture and integrity.) If it’s an ovensafe pan, you can place it in with olives. When cooked through, remove and let sit until it reaches room temperature. Toast bread in oven or on grill. Cut into quarters to give you 8 pieces. Mound ⅛ of warm tuna on top of bread. Season with salt. Drizzle grated tomato over tuna. Sprinkle crumbled olive over the top. Place dollops of aioli.* Finish each piece with 2 sprigs of watercress. Serve with side of fresh fruit or papas fritas dusted in pimenton.

Art in Motion

With a professional tennis career spanning four decades and an unprecedented 59 Grand Slam titles, including a record nine Wimbledon singles championships, Martina Navratilova is considered one of the greatest players in tennis history—and one of the greatest athletes of all time. Now, the sports icon is using her racket to reignite a different passion: art. BY SHERRI BALEFSKY HANSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRETT HUFZIGER

J

ust as in tennis, life introduces all kinds of unexpected bounces— some are favorable, others not so much. But for Martina Navratilova, there was one lucky bounce that led her to explore a newfound love in the world of art. That bounce came in 2000 when she was introduced to Slovak painter and sculptor Juro Kralik, who proposed an idea for an art collaboration using tools Navratilova has long been familiar with: tennis balls. We caught up with the tennis superstar to discuss the ongoing collaboration, how it has evolved, and that despite the inherent differences between tennis and art, they surprisingly have a lot in common. Tell us about your trajectory from tennis to art? How did you get started? Juro Kralik came to me with this idea he got from playing tennis on clay. He observed how the balls and shoe marks make imprints on the surface of the court, telling the story of the match. You brush them off after each game, kind of like Etch A Sketch. He thought it would be interesting to preserve this story. So, he came to my hometown in the Czech Republic and had me hit tennis balls onto square canvases padded with clay. e made these first pieces on the court where first hit a tennis all. How has the collaboration evolved? We eventually moved from clay to paint. Juro would coat the canvases in wet paint, and I would hit the balls on them, taking the paint off as I went. Later, we graduated to a new method where we dip the balls into the paint and I hit them onto a blank canvas. To date, we have made over 200 pieces, from ones that are 2-by-2 feet to ones that are 30-by-80 feet. We’ve also experimented with some other mediums, including glass. Tell us about the piece you chose for the art car collaboration with Warren Henry. Miami is all about color—with the green and the blue of the ocean and the vibrant hues all around. I thought the colors of this piece really embody the city.

SOUTH FLORIDA LUXURY GUIDE

Have you always had a creative side? I like to think I’m an artist with a racket. I have a great sense of space and proportion, but I’m not someone who can see something and draw it. The boy who sat next to me in grade school could draw beautifully. I would try to copy what he did, but I just couldn’t do it! How do tennis and art differ? How are they similar? Art is very subjective—you can create the most amazing piece, but have no one want to buy it. In tennis, even though you don’t know if you’re going to win or lose, you know exactly where you stand. There’s no judgment; it’s just about who’s better on that day. Tennis is also easier because there is a definite finishing point of a match. n art the hardest part is knowing when to stop. You always want to try to make a piece better. But in life, I’ve learned that oftentimes less is more. Tennis and art are similar in that you try your best at both, but you never really know how they’re going to turn out. You strive for excellence, but even if you don’t get there, it’s OK as long as you enjoy the process. I love everything about tennis, both on the court and off the court. If I win, that is just a bonus. It is the same for art. You have to enjoy doing it—and if you make somebody else happy with the piece, then that’s the cherry on the sundae. What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in sports or art—or anything for that matter? Fear of failure is a big thing in our society. I guess I’m never afraid to fail. You just learn from your mistakes and try to do better the next time. Another piece of advice (though it’s a little cliché) is to do what you love. You’ll be better at it and you’ll commit to it. As long as you do your best every day, you’re going to be happy and you won’t have any regrets. I say when in doubt, go for it!

THERE’S NOTHING MORE FULFILLING THAN BEING A PART OF SOMETHING THAT’S BIGGER THAN YOURSELF. — Laura Raybin Miller

WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE Laura Raybin Miller is a positive force in the lives of many throughout our community. BY ROBIN HODES

A

s vice president of wealth management and financial advisor at UBS Financial Services, Inc. for The Suskind-Ripple Group, Laura Raybin Miller helps South Florida families navigate the dynamics of their wealth planning. But that is only part of how this powerhouse with a heart of gold supports her community; she also helps through her leadership and participation in both civic and health care organizations. Through her volunteer service as commissioner of Memorial Healthcare System, she is a champion for children’s causes, maintaining the belief that all children should have access to quality health care regardless of their socioeconomic status. In addition, as a mentor for the Women of Tomorrow organization, she goes out of her way to inspire and empower young women to reach their highest potential. In 2000, Raybin Miller was appointed as commissioner of the South Broward Hospital District (Memorial Healthcare System), a position she’s retained for nearly 20 years, making her the board’s longest-serving commissioner. In this role, she voted for lessening the tax burden for the communities Memorial Healthcare System serves under its “safety net” status while maintaining the

lowest millage rate in its 60-year history. She is also committed to raising awareness about the Memorial Breast Cancer Center, the only regional breast cancer center to provide comprehensive care exclusively to women, through speaking engagements and public awareness campaigns for Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October. She continues to advocate for resources needed to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s delivery of gold-standard cancer care. Over the years, Raybin Miller has also been a strong advocate for exceptional board governance. In August 2017, she earned a Governance Fellowship from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the highest standard of credentialing for corporate directors. In March 2018, she became a member of the Women Corporate Directors Foundation (WCD), which was established to promote the highest standards of corporate governance within the rapidly growing international community of female directors on both public and private boards. Raybin Miller’s list of accomplishments only continues to grow. She is not only an inspiration to those who wish to bring about change to our world, she is a leader who is ready to be followed.

Get to Know...

LAURA RAYBIN MILLER You are a champion for women. How does your personal insight play into your career as a financial advisor? I have been an investment professional since 1999, working with clients to identify their financial goals. I especially enjoy working with my female clients; as a single mother, I empathetically translate my experiences to women who are in life transitions. What does the phrase “exceptional boardå governance” mean to you? My 20 years of board service has allowed me to collaborate with fellow leaders and to be part of something that’s truly exceptional. There’s nothing more fulfilling than being a part of something that’s bigger than yourself. Is there a specific issue that’s close to your heart? My mother was a three-time breast cancer survivor, and I am therefore passionate about breast cancer awareness. I work zealously to marshal resources on the hospital level to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s comprehensive medical services are accessible to women regardless of their ability to pay. Women in our community no longer have to travel out of town for gold-standard care. What is one of the most important life lessons you have learned? I’ve learned not to be attached to inanimate objects. I only keep items that provide me with positive energy. I am a minimalist at heart, and I appreciate organization and structure. Your strong sense of community is clearly in your genes. How have you passed these qualities down to your son? My 34-year-old son, Adam Raybin, of whom I am extremely proud, is a paramedic, an EMT and a lieutenant with the Broward County Sheriff’s Fire Rescue. He shares my selfless desire to help individuals in need.

BEFORE YOU REMARRY, DO THIS EMBARK ON YOUR NEXT LIFE PATH EQUIPPED WITH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING.

I

f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.

Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony.

Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1 What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage. But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial wellbeing—at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2 If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows. Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage. Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about

it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2 Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. That’s why eight out of 10 women find it helpful to think about wealth along three different dimensions.2 Liquidity: The cash at your disposal, which you need for short-term expenses over the next three or so years. Longevity: Savings and investments you can use for longerterm needs, from the next four years into retirement. Legacy: The investments that will continue after you’re gone, and can help others with their needs. Thinking through these dimensions helps you sort out what you aim to accomplish now and in the future. What do you want your legacy to be? How will you achieve these things? Who are the people who matter most to you? Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for

some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key. Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership. Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come. Couturista travelers shopping in Florence

Luxury vacations are experiencing a renaissance thanks to Couturista Travel, which offers international group tours that emphasize fashion and shopping. BY ROBIN HODES

N

early two years ago, Couturista Travel was one of the best-kept secrets in luxury tours to Italy. But through word of mouth, these exclusive encounters are no longer hush-hush. Couturista’s niche clientele, women with a reverence for refinement and a passion for fashion, aren’t just whispering about it now—they’re shouting it out loud. Couturista Travel offers incomparable tours that are designed to highlight the fashion and artisan culture of each destination they visit, be it Italy, Mexico, Colombia or beyond. Luxury accommodations, impeccable service, VIP access, special discounts and private trunk shows featuring emerging and established designers are included in the package.

“We take luxury travel to a higher level by curating personal shopping experiences at iconic boutiques, with chauffeurs and guides who get you in through the back door of places ‘regular’ shoppers would have to line up,” says co-founder Myriam Angulo. For example, Couturista’s Tuscany tour is a complete program that includes culture, food and wine—all the highlights of the 80

Italian region—in addition to an insidersonly exploration of Florence, the epicenter of Italian fashion brands. “Our journeys are designed for those who do not want or do not have time to organize the logistics and reservations that each day entails,” adds co-founder Laz Priegues. “We pamper guests so that they enjoy a turnkey vacation, where everything that is included is as perfect as—or even better than—if you had organized it yourself.” Couturista also offers one-day shopping and art tours in Miami, as well as one-day shopping tours in Florence for those who travel on their own. A curated Couturista vacation tour is the ultimate gift for that special someone— or for yourself. “Our tours are exquisite shared experiences that will amuse your soul forever,” says Angulo. “Italian fashion never goes out of style.” Just remember to pack your passport, comfortable (designer!) walking shoes and, perhaps most importantly, an empty suitcase to bring home your new wardrobe of wearable souvenirs.

UPCOMING TOURS WITH COUTURISTA TRAVEL If a one-of-a-kind luxury travel experience is on your 2020 bucket list, now’s the time to start planning. Here’s what couturistas can anticipate in the coming year: Spring 2020

TUSCANY, ITALY Even if you’ve been to Tuscany, you haven’t fully experienced it until you’ve seen it the Couturista way. The Tuscany Couture Experience offers exclusive artisan visits and the best of wine country combined with a week of city life and, of course, luxury shopping in the fashion capital of Florence.

Summer 2020

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA Couturista’s all-new Cartagena tour, scheduled for June 2020, will showcase the vibrant, colonial Colombian port city— not just its castles, colors and culture, but also its hidden treasures that only Couturista can help you uncover.

Lamborghini Aventador S by Skyler Grey

The performance credentials attributed to the Lamborghini Aventador S demand an equally enigmatic exterior, so it’s no surprise that Sant’Agata Bolognese commissioned 19-year-old L.A.–based pop artist Skyler Grey (known as the “Fresh Prince of Street Art”) to adorn its bodywork. The exclusive creation uses the Aventador’s three-dimensional frame to awaken multiple animated images on the Arancio Atlas orange paint, including numerous Raging Bulls and a tribute to Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Cans.” It took rey nearly a year to finish his design and three wee s to apply it at Lamborghini’s new paint shop in Italy.

MIAMI-DADE WHY MIAMI? The Miami real estate market shows great promise for the future, says Edgardo Defortuna, president and CEO of Fortune International Group, who adds that the city’s status as a renowned real estate destination has grown significantly over the past decade. He credits much of this to its burgeoning cultural offerings. “Miami is home to world-class cultural institutions—the Arsht Center, PAMM, Frost Science and Art Basel,” Defortuna says. “Residents have access to museums events and e periences right outside their doors.” The ease of getting around doesn’t hurt either, as trends are shifting toward communities that offer pro imity to daily amenities. eople want shorter commutes to work, school or recreation spots,” says Sylvia Fragos, founder and president of Great Estates International Realty. “The Brightline has been a game changer for many; but being able to walk, bike or ride an electric scooter to your destination is an even igger draw. ack is back! That is the freshly baited hook that is enticing golfers to Reynolds Lake Oconee, a lush destination 80 miles east of Atlanta. “Jack,” of course, refers to Jack Nicklaus, who returned to the property 27 years after building its original Great Waters course to renew it with hundreds of enhancements, including 22 greens, 50 bunkers, 96 tee boxes to allow for play from 4,500 to 7,400 yards and a brand-new eighth hole. He also made a complete turf switch from Bermuda grass to Zeon Zoysia. At the course’s grand reopening in October, Nicklaus praised the results: “This was a wonderful opportunity to build a spectacular course on a spectacular piece of land,” he said. “I can’t think of another inland course with more water views or shoreline.”
