DISCONNECT IN ORDER TO REFLECT I
Recently, I took a trip to Key West. If staying on Duval Street with the beers, bars and bands isn’t your thing and you like more laid-back luxury, I suggest staying at the beautiful Parrot Key Hotel & Villas, which is just a 10-minute ride from Old Town. From my room, I was able to step out from my first-floor balcony onto a private beach, where I savored a glass of wine while watching the sun set. I also recently enjoyed a staycation at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. With eight restaurants and bars, a fully equipped fitness center, a full-service spa, two pools, private cabanas, beachfront umbrellas and chairs and a great lobby atmosphere, there is really no need to leave the premises! The Diplomat has great rates on hotel stays through September with rooms starting at $149 per night (they run $459/night in high season). To read more, visit our Destinations feature on page 74.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: DINING AT THE DIPLOMAT Even if you’re not planning an overnight stay at The Diplomat, don’t let that stop you from dining at one of its celebrity chef restaurants! The resort is home to one of my favorite restaurants, Monkitail, which serves up savory Japanese fare by chef and restaurateur Michael Schulson. Plus, there is a speak-easy area in the back called Nokku with four private karaoke rooms that can fit up to 18 people. Don’t wait to try this restaurant out: Through September, Monkitail is offering a 10-course chef’s tasting menu for just $69 per person. The Diplomat’s other star restaurant, Diplomat Prime, is an iconic steakhouse that continues to lure locals and tourists alike. Led by Executive Chef Rashaad Abdool, this restaurant doesn’t disappoint. We experienced top-of-the-line service and amazing food. And, I must say, the Dark Chocolate Sphere with banana rum, caramel and vanilla ice cream was probably the best dessert I have had in a long time!

turned 49 this summer. I can’t believe I have almost finished another decade of my life! When I was approaching 30 and 40, it didn’t really affect me. But there is something different about turning 50. I have found myself reflecting more on what I want my next 10 years to look like. Most of my adult life has been dedicated to working—a lot. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), I love to work, but I could like it so much that I miss out on other hobbies I might enjoy. I’ve decided that this upcoming year is going to be a year of introspection so that I can make positive changes for my next decade. I like to get away from the day-to-day treadmill on which I seem to keep myself by taking mini staycations. It is here where I can disconnect and, therefore, have time to reflect.

T
he wheels are turning, literally, throughout the pages of our Fall 2019 issue, which is dedicated to the latest and greatest luxury motors that are capturing hearts—and wallets—all over the world. I myself was never a huge “car person” before I joined the team at South Florida Luxury Guide three years ago. And while I still can’t tell you the difference between a twin-turbo and a flat-six engine, I can rattle off high-end marques and their corresponding models with a much higher degree of confidence. We start out our Luxury Motors Special Feature (page 33) with a diverse roundup of high-end automobiles pulling up to car showrooms for 2020, from powerful midengines to deluxe SUVs to exclusive limited-edition hypercars—including the $12.5 million Bugatti La Voiture Noire, which graces our cover. And, because cars aren’t the only powerful modes of transportation, this issue also presents some of the newest yacht and superyacht models taking on waterways this season (page 49). Look out for these and many other vessels when the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show returns to our backyard this October. Elsewhere, you'll find a section dedicated to the newest tech gadgets, timepieces and other pricey "toys” (page 46) that will make both car enthusiasts and everyday drivers swoon (a $30,000 Lamborghini massage chair, anyone?). And while extravagant modes of transportation get our pulses racing on a daily basis, it’s important to remember that life is all about the moments, memories and new possibilities and adventures that come along the way. Enjoy the ride!

BEFORE YOU REMARRY, DO THIS EMBARK ON YOUR NEXT LIFE PATH EQUIPPED WITH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING.
I
f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.
Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony. Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1 What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage. But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial wellbeing—at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2 If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows. Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage. Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about
it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2 Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. That’s why eight out of 10 women find it helpful to think about wealth along three different dimensions.2 Liquidity: The cash at your disposal, which you need for short-term expenses over the next three or so years. Longevity: Savings and investments you can use for longerterm needs, from the next four years into retirement. Legacy: The investments that will continue after you’re gone, and can help others with their needs. Thinking through these dimensions helps you sort out what you aim to accomplish now and in the future. What do you want your legacy to be? How will you achieve these things? Who are the people who matter most to you? Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for

some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key. Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership. Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come. It wasn’t long ago that people thought that by the year 2020, we would have flying cars, hovering bikes and mass space exploration. Of course, our cars still travel by road, our bikes adhere to the ground and space is still mostly off-limits—but the latest vehicles to grace car showrooms across the globe remain nothing short of spectacular, ambitious and even, at times, otherworldly. Powered by BMW’s flagship V-8 engine, the M8 can rocket to a software-limited 189 mph while pampering its occupants in refined luxury. Power is routed to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system that can be deactivated, turning the 600-horsepower convertible into a mean drifting machine if and when desired.

Leave it to the Land of the Rising Sun to build a beautiful convertible that’s all about letting the sun in. There isn’t a better way to enjoy the burble of the Lexus LC’s naturally aspirated V-8 than with the top down and the sun illuminating the road ahead—even as it’s devoured by 471 angry horses under the hood. Lexus’ signature spindle grille adorns the front end, while smooth flowing lines caress the profile, culminating in a rear end reminiscent of the iconic Lexus LFA. Overall, the LC is arguably the most beautiful Japanese car in decades, and its convertible variant surely follows suit. 2020 ALFA ROMEO 4C SPIDER ITALIA EDITION
It’s low to the ground, small in size and light in weight, but the Alfa Romeo 4C pays big dividends in terms of driving enjoyment. With only 15 units available worldwide, the all-new Italia Edition packs more exclusivity and even more Italian flair than the “regular” 4C Spider, which is already a niche car—even by most European sports car standards. Therefore, this zippy Alfa is rarer than most modern-day Ferraris. It boasts a trim-exclusive metallic Misano blue exterior, a piano-black air intake and rear diffuser, various Italian flag mementos throughout and a metal plate on the center console highlighting its build number.

BEHIND THE DESIGN
We caught up with Scott Krugger, head of design at Alfa Romeo, to discuss the past, present and future of the storied Italian auto brand. What is the inspiration behind the modern Alfa Romeo design language? The biggest inspirations are heritage and performance. For example, the current Alfa Romeo Giulia takes its lines from classic cars like the original 1960s Giulia, the stunning 33 Stradale and the impressive 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” Coupe, but also from our rich racing history. We also refer to art, the human body and beautiful objects for inspiration, but at the end of the day, we condense it into a single object to become a true Alfa Romeo. How does heritage play into design? Our heritage is important, but for the future, we always balance what’s needed. All modern Alfas feature the brand’s prominent Scudetto grille, which is elegantly sculpted within the front fascia to form the signature trilobo, a staple of Alfa Romeo design dating back to the 1960s.

One of the most awaited vehicles of the decade, Chevy’s Corvette C8 represents the eighth generation of America’s most popular sports car and the pinnacle of engineering for General Motors. Drastically altering the ’Vette’s 66-year history, it ditches the traditional front-engine configuration and adopts a mid-engine instead. The base-model LT2 V-8 engine propels the vehicle with a robust 495 ponies, with higher horsepower and possibly a twin-turbo variant coming in future Z06 and ZR1 trims. The styling not only breaks the mold created back in 1953, but it also establishes the Corvette as a solid player on the world stage—not to mention, the trunk is big enough for two sets of golf clubs. TRICKED-OUT INTERIORS
Things have changed drastically since the dawn of the automobile, when metal levers and switches controlled overly simplistic dashboards and center consoles. As time went by, plastic buttons became the norm, and those were followed by early-day touch screens. Nowadays, the touch screen is king, which leads us to ask the question: What’s next? The answer is more like: How big? Look at Tesla’s 15-inch vertical screens that have become synonymous with cars of the future. Or Jaguar and Land Rover, which have now switched to center consoles where every component—climate, radio and more—is operated via two horizontal touch screens. Electric car startups like Byton are designing interiors with 49-inch touch screens to work as all-digital dashboards. With software ruling the modern world, it’s safe to say that bigger and smarter touch screens have only brushed the surface of what’s possible. Touch screen inside a Tesla Model X

GOING GREEN
There is a big possibility that in our lifetime, internalcombustion engines and their gasoline- or diesel-burning ways will be things of the past. Automakers around the world know that the clock is ticking on fossil fuels and that something must be done. The science community’s warnings about global warming have only accelerated the transition to hybrid, to plug-in hybrid and, now, to fully electric vehicles. Toyota has spent over a decade developing the cleanest energy form we know so far: hydrogen. Companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo have jumped onto the fully electric bandwagon. And even racing series like Formula E, Formula One’s electric counterpart, are doing their part to shed light on the subject. 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC

You could say that the Benetti Elaldrea+ has a sparkling personality. When the light hits its profile at certain angles, its pearly paint with silver accents lets off an iridescent glow. Outfitted in luxury brands such as Poltrona Frau and Arketipo, the long-range cruiser, capable of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, keeps everyone onboard entertained with two swimming pools, one of which can be filled with seawater, and an upper-deck lounge-turned-gaming room complete with a TV area and bar. benettiyachts.it Length: 160 ft. | Beam: 29 ft., 9 in. | Draft: 8 ft. | Staterooms: 6 Engine: Twin MTU 12V 2000 M72s | Top Speed: 14 knots

Want to see one of these super-sleek speedboats in person? The 48 Wallytender will mark the model’s U.S. premiere at the 2019 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this October as part of the Ferretti Group display. (Ferretti recently acquired Wally, which is known for combining the latest technology with contemporary design and celebrating the spirit of wind-in-your-hair boating.) Standard features include a retractable swim ladder, plus fold-down aft sections to extend the swim platform at anchor, which can be achieved at the push of a button. Coinciding with its 60th anniversary, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (Oct. 30 – Nov. 3) will debut a new exhibition area at Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina’s Pier South property: the aptly named Superyacht Village. Covering 3.5 acres, the property is one of the only areas in Fort Lauderdale able to host yachts up to 400 feet, making it the ideal spot for the show to expand. “The growing number of large yachts exhibiting at the show continues to attract affluent buyers and superyacht charter clients,” explains Andrew Doole, president of Informa U.S. Boat Shows. Aside from hosting some of the world’s largest yachts, the Superyacht Village will include exhibits from prominent shipyards, along with personal submarines, helicopters and other luxury items related to the cruising lifestyle. It will also host events like fine wine and Champagne tastings, plus the second-annual FLIBS Yacht Chef Competition. flibs.com

At 79 feet (including the elongated swim platform), the semicustom Extra 76 from ISA Yachts is an ideal “entry level” superyacht directed at cruisers who want the advantages of a larger vessel without the manning and maintenance of one. What really distinguishes this yacht is the space utilization: From the swim platform to the dining area, which is shaded by the overhang of the flying bridge, you get a remarkable 538 square feet of alfresco areas. It also features an extra-wide beam akin to what a 100-footer would have. It’s all wrapped in an athletic profile and is available to tailor to the way you like to live. extrayachts.com

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence
DAR designed by Luiz De Basto
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Luiz De Basto
“Boats and yachts are a perfect combination of two of my life passions—cars and architecture,” says Miami-based yacht designer Luiz De Basto, who grew up in Angola and Brazil before moving to the U.S. in 1990. Among his recent projects is the award-winning 295-foot DAR, which boasts nearly 4,306 square feet of glass, much of it floorto-ceiling. We caught up with De Basto to discuss.
Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence
When did you first know you wanted to work in design? From a young age, I was intrigued by 3-D things—cars, houses, buildings, people—how to represent them and integrate the background. When I was about 7 or 8, I was creating houses out of paper that I had cut and folded into cubes. These weren’t just simple houses, they were L-shaped and U-shaped houses with roofs on top. I remember folding things to see how I could create complex shapes. That’s when I decided I wanted to become an architect.
IMAGES COURTESY OCEAN ALEXANDER/FOREST JOHNSON; LUIZ DE BASTO
You try to apply new glass technologies from outside of yachting for function and aesthetics. Why is that? I’ve always been intrigued by glass in the way it opens interiors and views to nature, yet at the same time, it protects what’s inside. Glass has evolved tremendously over the last 20 to 30 years; those are huge advances in technology that I think we have to take advantage of.
OCEAN ALEXANDER 45 DIVERGENCE
Making its debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February, the 45 Divergence is an aptly named departure for Ocean Alexander, which has long built large yachts and superyachts. It is the brand’s first outboardpowered vessel—a center console featuring four Mercury Verado outboards, no less—for a wind-in-your-hair experience. Divergence also has a patented door-within-a-door system that lets the bulwarks fold open. When they’re extended, the beam reaches 19 feet (versus the standard 14 feet). Equally noteworthy, you get to choose interior woods, upholstery and paint colors, along with accouterments for fishing or diving, yielding hundreds of different possible combinations. oceanalexander.com Length: 47 ft., 5 in. | Beam: 13 ft., 9 in. | Draft: 3 ft., 3 in. | Staterooms: 1 plus convertible dinette | Engine: Quadruple Mercury Verado 350s | Top Speed: N/A
Why do you think clients come to you? What sets you apart? I don’t like to repeat myself. I know where to push yacht design, not just in the technology, but in the lifestyle. People don’t go out on a boat for the same reason they go to a beach house. The mobility is very important—going places and exploring the surroundings. You have to understand that in order to propose new ideas. What are your thoughts about concept designs in yachting? Do they matter? Concepts are very important. We have to show people. There are a lot of concepts out there, but many of them don’t advance anything. I don’t just want to make balanced lines. I’m trying to go after a lifestyle and to propose new ways of enjoying nature.

WE CREATED JETASAP TO PROVIDE A SELF-SERVICE PLATFORM WHERE FLYERS CAN CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF THE CHARTER BOOKING PROCESS AND ALWAYS PAY EXACTLY WHAT AN OPERATOR CHARGES— AND NOT A PENNY MORE — Lisa Kiefer Sayer
” Lisa Kiefer Sayer, founder, JetASAP
A FRESH (AND FREE) TAKE ON FLYING PRIVATELY Through her all-new free charter booking service JetASAP, Lisa Kiefer Sayer is saving private flyers 10 to 50 percent on every flight. BY JARROD HOLLAND
isa Kiefer Sayer knows a thing or two about charter flight services. With 21 years in the aviation industry as a director of charter sales and a consultant, she’s sold thousands of private flights to companies, CEOs, VIPs and more. Recognizing a need for a self-service system that allows users to book private flights directly, Sayer put her knowledge and experience to work to launch the new smartphone app JetASAP. As the only platform to connect flyers directly with charter operators, JetASAP provides a powerful set of tools that has never before been offered. With full transparency, flyers can search for and book directly with the charter operator of their choice; they can select their aircraft type, determine exact pricing and even see the tail number and charter operator of the plane they choose. No brokers are involved (not traditionally the case when booking private flights), saving flyers anywhere from 10 to 50 percent per flight. Best of all, the app is completely free to use with no fees, commissions or membership costs. “There are a growing number of flyers who prefer to book their own travel directly, but the process of calling multiple operators and comparing quotes is time-consuming,” says Sayer. “We created JetASAP to provide a

self-service platform where flyers can control every aspect of the charter booking process and always pay exactly what an operator charges—and not a penny more.” JetASAP also offers a real-time chat system within the app that allows direct communication between flyers and charter operators at any point during the search and booking process. Flyers can ask questions anonymously and cross-shop different companies with all of the information needed right in front of them. Furthermore, JetASAP is the only platform that provides live charter quote pricing directly from operators. Other digital servicers typically provide a price estimate or an automated quote price, which can then fluctuate wildly when actually booking the chosen private plane. “Rather than trying to automate what continues to be a manual process that typically requires human intervention on the quoting side, we have simply found a way to use technology to facilitate the current process and streamline it for both the flyer and the operator,” says Sayer. “The JetASAP platform provides the much-needed link that makes directly booking a charter as simple as possible.” According to Sayer, JetASAP will officially launch Fall 2019. Get to Know... JASON HALVORSEN
SEAKEEPERS DISCOVERY YACHT CAPTAIN BY MICHELE MARIN
W
hile other South Florida teens were navigating the halls of high school, Jason Halvorsen was dashing from morning classes at Fort Lauderdale High to marine mechanic classes at McFatter Technical School. He was working on yachts by age 16, and at 19, he earned his first captain’s license. Halvorsen has come a long way since his early captaining days aboard commercial dinner boats. He now helms the 141-foot-long Marcato, a custom-built expedition yacht in the International SeaKeepers Society’s DISCOVERY Yacht Fleet, which is dedicated to helping marine science initiatives and keeping our oceans clean.
Capt. Jason Halvorsen
“
I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT YACHT CREWS AND GUESTS ARE BECOMING MORE AWARE OF THE IMPACT WE DIRECTLY HAVE ON OUR OCEANS.
What sparked your interest in the International SeaKeepers Society? The idea that I would be able to link my career in yachting, my interest in marine science and my passion for the ocean in a fun and fulfilling way. What was your first SeaKeepers expedition? In May 2018, we sailed the Marcato to Nassau, Bahamas, where researchers implanted tags, recorded morphological measurements and took blood samples and fin clippings from sharks. The expedition was also devoted to the deployment of baited underwater cameras to depths up to 3,300 feet.
”
— Capt. Jason Halvorsen SeaKeepers Program Director Tony Gilbert helps secure a Caribbean reef shark while Dr. Austin Gallagher and his team take morphological measurements and blood and tissue samples and tag the shark for tracking purposes. Capt. Halvorsen is in the background recording the data.
Where has SeaKeepers taken you? In the past eight months, we have logged over 15,000 nautical miles throughout the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Peru, Chile and the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. SeaKeepers recently unveiled the S.A.R.A.H. Initiative, which is designed to combat plastic pollution in our oceans. What can you tell us about this project? Plastic is one of the leading threats to the health of our oceans. The S.A.R.A.H. Initiative (Sample, Aggregate, Return, Analyze, Help) supplies us with a net that is designed to be pulled behind the boat to collect water samples. These samples are sent back to scientists at Florida International University and analyzed for microplastics.
A “spaghetti tag” can be seen behind the dorsal fin of a shark that has just been released. This tag gives the animal a unique ID number, which is placed in a database. Any scientist who encounters it can track the shark’s movements throughout its lifetime.
How is the Marcato making a difference? We are doing our best to reduce the use of single-use plastics onboard. I firmly believe that yacht crews and guests are becoming more aware of the impact we directly have on our oceans.
Join the yachting community for the International SeaKeepers Society’s 2019 Founders Dinner, an exclusive gathering in recognition of the 2018-19 DISCOVERY Yacht Fleet. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, at a private residence in Fort Lauderdale. For more information, contact

ONLY OUT OF ATTORNEYS ARE BOARD CERTIFIED *
LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO RECEIVE THIS ELITE DISTINCTION. www.BCA.law is a new online resource that takes the guesswork out of finding the expert lawyer you need by working exclusively with Board Certified Attorneys. We spoke with founder David B. Rothman, a Miami-based Board Certified criminal trial attorney who has practiced law for more than 40 years, to discover what makes being a Board Certified Attorney different from a being a regular attorney who passes the Florida Bar.
What makes a Board Certified Specialist an expert? While there are over 100,000 lawyers in our state (approximately 73,000 practicing), each of whom is a licensed member of The Florida Bar, only about 7 percent of the practicing attorneys are considered Board Certified Specialists. Only after being tested and vetted by The Florida Bar can these individuals call themselves experts in their field. To remain Board Certified, each attorney must apply and be approved for recertification every five years. Not incidentally, the mere fact a lawyer is Board Certified does not mean that he or she is more expensive than any other lawyer. Why did you and your partners form BCA? First, we wanted to educate people about the fact that only a very small percentage of Florida lawyers have been certified by The Florida Bar as experts in 27 practice areas, including civil trial, real estate, criminal trial, construction law, wills, trusts and estates, marital and family law and business litigation, to name a few. These experts are deemed Board

Certified Specialists. Secondly, we wanted to create a single place where the public could easily access and connect with a vetted list of Board Certified Specialists in every field. How does BCA help Board Certified Specialists? Five years ago, as I was working on my BCS recertification, I realized that as hard as I had worked to become and continue to be Board Certified, and as proud as I was that I was a Florida Board Certified Specialist, only one client in my decades of practice knew what Board Certification meant. I felt the public needed to know and understand what becoming Board Certified entails. But I’m a lawyer, not a businessman. That is where my BCA partners took over. Together, we have taken my idea and created a company that recruits and successfully markets Board Certified Attorneys so that people with important legal matters can easily find the expert attorney they are looking for. What differentiates BCA from other lawyer referral services? Remember, only lawyers certified by The Florida Bar as Board Certified Specialists can become members of BCA. I go back to what the difference is between a lawyer and a Board Certified Specialist: All of our listed attorneys have been tested and vetted by The Florida Bar as experts. That’s not a brag, it’s a fact.
For more information and to find the right attorney for you, visit www.BCA.law.
WHILE THERE ARE OVER 100,000 LAWYERS IN OUR STATE... EACH OF WHOM IS A LICENSED MEMBER OF THE FLORIDA BAR, ONLY ABOUT 7 PERCENT OF THE PRACTICING ATTORNEYS ARE CONSIDERED BOARD CERTIFIED SPECIALISTS.

The Sanctuary Paradise House
Inspired by the “Organic American Style” of Frank Lloyd Wright, architect, Chayo Frank designed a home and garden that is a “Sanctuary Paradise” that is unique and extraordinary in every aspect. Located in the coveted neighborhood of Ponce-Davis, in Miami, Florida, the home was created to facilitate a tropical living style, rather than an aesthetic design. Surrounded by a sunken private garden, it boasts an extensive collection of some of the world’s rarest exotic tropical plants including a Weeping Ficus brought from Indonesia by Dr. David Fairchild in 1940. A juxtaposed structure of steel beams and columns encased in California Redwood, with large expanses of sliding glass walls, 25’ foot volume ceilings and a natural coral rock wall that delineates interior and exterior atmospheres, it allows for a connection and flow between the inviting interior spaces and the extraordinary landscape of the
surrounding gardens. A two-story open space floor plan is airy, comfortable and unrestricted. Meandering pathways, subterranean grottos, and a pool overlooking tropical waterfalls create a private Sanctuary Paradise that is great for entertaining or a serene lifestyle retreat. The design and use of natural materials found in this natural landscape transcends the norms of traditional architecture. This “Private World” resonates with an atmosphere of beauty and tranquility. LAETITIA LAURENT PRINCIPAL AND LEAD DESIGNER, LAURE NELL INTERIORS BY ROBIN HODES
G
rowing up in Paris, designer Laetitia Laurent was influenced by the artistic environment and classic architecture of the City of Light from an early age. Her familiarity with the French aesthetic, coupled with the tropical climate and casual lifestyle of South Florida, has allowed her to develop a singular design identity. Favoring “editing” over “layering,” she lives by the advice of Coco Chanel: Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off. “If you pile too many pillows on top of a gorgeous custom sofa, you lose the purity of the lines,“ Laurent says. “I’d rather let the work stand on its own.”
How did your company evolve from fashion to interiors? Before Laure Nell Interiors, it was just Laure Nell, which consisted of children’s clothing, women’s fashions that I imported from France and home decor. When I brought the home pieces to clients, I found myself reorganizing how they set their table, repositioning their furniture and, eventually, working with architects and general contractors to knock down walls. Fashion still informs my home design because it is important to feel good in not only what you wear, but also where you live.
“
I ENGAGE MY CLIENTS BY MAKING THEM PART OF THE CREATIVE JOURNEY INSTEAD OF JUST TELLING THEM WHAT TO BUY. IT’S MORE COLLABORATIVE THAT WAY.
Laetitia Laurent
— Laetitia Laurent
”
What are some of your other go-to brands? Arteriors for artisan lighting, Bungalow 5 for curated home decor items and Made Goods for statement-making accents. How does being a mother of two play into your designs? I like designing for families and keep that in mind when making selections—for example, avoiding glass coffee tables and sharp edges. I try to make the homes I design more conducive to everyday living. Perennials is big for me because its fabrics are beautiful yet durable and can perform both indoors and out.
Newman wallpaper in Aqua by Thibaut; chandelier by RH; antique candleholder from Paris flea market
How do you establish trust with clients? Trust is a longterm process. Clients might be reticent in the beginning, but they become more open as they see things coming together. I engage my clients by making them part of the creative journey instead of just telling them what to buy. It’s more collaborative that way.

How do your Parisian roots influence your design? I like to incorporate elements like classic French moldings and parquet herringbone floors, but also infuse stylish avantgarde items from brands such as Ligne Roset and Roche Bobois, which have beautifully upholstered pieces that are very on-trend. You can do a contemporary lime-green sofa next to an art deco fireplace mantel and it will look amazing.

LOSE UP TO 2-6 INCHES IN YOUR FIRST SESSION IF YOU DON’T LOSE, YOU DON’T PAY
ASK THE EXPERT Nina Presman, founder of the Anti-Aging Center of Boca, discusses the benefits of a new noninvasive treatment called Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU. WHAT IS ALPHA LIPOLYSIS WITH HIFU? Alpha Lipolysis with HIFU is a nonsurgical, natural phenomenon based on low-frequency ultrasound that is designed to help patients lose weight and inches quickly, easily and risk-free. Ultrasonic waves are applied to create bubbles in the liquid that surrounds the fat cells. These fat cell membranes do not have the structural capacity to withstand these vibrations, so the effect of the ultrasound causes them to gradually grow and implode, while sparing the vascular, nervous and muscular tissues. The process causes an emulsification of solid fat substances. This releases triglyceride fluid, which is easy to eliminate through the lymphatic system. After the disruption of the fat cells, the liquid that makes up the fat cells, in the form of triglycerides, is released into the fluid between the cells. This fluid is then metabolized. Water-soluble glycerol is absorbed by the circulatory system and is used as an energy source, whereas the insoluble, free fatty acids are transported to the liver and processed as fatty acids from food.
HOW DOES THE GUARANTEE WORK? Our technician measures and photographs the patient. After the treatment, a second photo and new measurements are taken. If your second measurement is not less than the first, then you will not pay for the service. It is that simple. We stand by our work 100 percent. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? • This procedure is done without anesthesia and is noninvasive (no cutting, scars or post-operative care). • This treatment allows for a full social life both before and after the sessions. Lose inches of fat without exercise or diet. • Relaxes muscles, reduces nerve excitability and stimulates nerve transmission. • Reduces scar tissue and fades stretch marks. • Increases lymphatic system activity. • Stimulates production of collagen. • Reduces inches of measurement with each session.
See more before-and-after photos at
antiagingcenterofboca.com
Ultrasonic wave energy vibrates fat cells 20,000 times a second until they burst open, releasing intracellular fat that is to be drained by your lymphatic system. ARE THERE ANY RISKS? The science was so compelling that even the FDA approved this process as a way to eliminate fat without endangering the health of the patient. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TREATMENTS? The results have been so dramatic and consistent, we have adopted a no-money-upfront guarantee. That means if you do not reduce in size (in the area worked on), you do not pay for the service.

ABOUT NINA PRESMAN Nina Presman came to United States from the Soviet Union in 1979. After her own struggles with trying to live up to the competitive standards of American beauty and body image, she became a personal trainer and nutrition consultant. In 2013, she graduated from Argosy University with a BA in science of psychology. She also entered a school to learn about skin and aesthetics, and completed multiple degrees in advanced skin care. Her dream was to combine the understanding of self-actualization and happiness with developing the outer beauty to match the inner self. With this in mind, she created the AntiAging Center of Boca, where a person can achieve the look he or she wants without surgery, and learn how to be truly happy on the inside. Nina found practitioners who share her views and know how to deliver healing and awareness to anyone who walks through the door.
