A

s a top performing agent with Austin Portfolio Real Estate, Eric Copper has earned the reputation of being one of the top luxury real estate brokers in Austin. With a passion for helping people and supporting his community, particularly the arts, Eric Copper is making a difference in the lives of others and the landscape of Austin. Where are you from and how long have you been in Austin? 16 years now. I was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. My professional career began in sales at Ameritech in the cellular phone industry (remember bag phones and brick phones?). I transitioned into a leadership role running call center operations until an opportunity with SBC came along in 2000. The question was, “Relocate to San Antonio?” No! “How about Austin?” Hmm. I was hesitant thinking Texas was just tumbleweeds and flatland until my Aunt cleverly sold me on Austin taking me to The Oasis to watch the sunset over Lake Travis. Sold! Why Real Estate? The telecom industry was tanking and layoffs were occurring. I survived several, but knew inevitably I would be impacted. I thought a lot about being an entrepreneur and knew real estate was something in my DNA so I studied and got my license on the side. Another round of layoffs ensued and this time it was my turn. Despite a job offer from Dell, I chose to bank on myself and went after it. I never looked back.

The Arts and music are especially important to you. You serve on a couple of distinguished boards and are a known supporter of the community, particularly the Arts. Tell us about that. The arts, music in particular, is something I am passionate about and believe is the pillar of a great community. Volunteer work at Zach Scott Theatre filled a personal need for me and it helped connect and integrate me into the Austin community. Fast forward to 2016 and in addition to supporting many great local organizations, I am very honored to be on the board of both Zach Theatre and The Long Center. Wow! Your strengths in negotiations led to a leadership role at Keller Williams. Tell us more. Yes! Early in my career, I was asked to teach a negotiation class to my fellow Realtors. I didn’t know it at the time, but the President of Keller Williams’ daughter was in that class. KW was growing exponentially and looking for leaders. Who knew that teaching that class would lead to a career opportunity that was pivotal. In 2006 (after multiple interviews including one with Gary Keller), I was privileged to lead the flagship office of Keller Williams Realty. Most people don’t realize this is the hometown of KW and that particular office reigns as the largest real estate office in North America - of any major franchise with over 800 agents and $1.5 billion in sales volume annually. What do you love most about Austin? A co-worker once told me, “Eric, you can play in the alley with the cats and then drink tea with the queen!”. I think Austin embodies that; it’s small enough to find familiar faces, but large enough to attract a diverse and vibrant community. We have the best of both worlds.

Tell us about the jukebox that you're leaning against in your photo. It’s a 1952 Seeburg that is in amazing condition. My grandfather got it from an old dance hall somewhere and I grew up with it in my basement. Today it is a great conversation piece and when I entertain you’ll inevitably find my guests playing the old 45’s and singing old songs without holding back. It also proudly displays ticket stubs and Playbills from my favorite concerts and shows over the years. What do you attribute your success in real estate to? The real reason for my success, I believe, starts with treating everyone like they’re family. I’ve built my business on building and nurturing relationships. The $140,000 home I sold a long time ago ended up being the housekeeper to the owner of a million dollar home. If you treat every client with integrity and respect, and genuine concern, they will reward you with their loyalty and by spreading the word. I have grown up with my clients helping many of them get into their first home and eventually finding them the home of their dreams. I’m extremely humbled and thankful to play such an important role in people’s lives. What’s your favorite quote? “Take the high road…the view is always better”. -Tyler Sieswerda
