CALMING CONTOURS Artist Zahra Jlayer explores the serene beauty of nature through color and pattern. Zahra Jlayer loved art as far back as she can remember. However, like many artistic kids, her parents encouraged her toward a more stable career, so she chose medicine. Still, she never lost her passion for art. After her father’s death, she began to paint in earnest, feeling her dad’s presence as she worked. In 2017, she decided to become a full-time artist.

In Jlayer’s vibrant works, colors form marbleized, rippled, or crackled patterns. Because her color palettes are typically analogous (colors found next to each other on the color wheel), they are bright but soothing and engaging but calming. “I am a nature lover,” Jlayer says. “I try to put nature’s footprint into each painting.”
FOREVER GREEN
Some of her works made from cells resembling what one might see under the microscope. “During my pathology residency and studying slides under the microscope, cell structures always appeared as beautiful abstract paintings. I then started to add those influences into my art and created abstract landscapes series with cells. I called this style cytopainting.” Jlayer creates art by pouring fluid acrylic paint mixed with water and sometimes other additives onto canvas or wood panel. “By the rules of fluid dynamics, liquids try to separate from each other. Different amounts of pigments make different patterns on the canvas,” she says. The artist says people are drawn to her work because it’s a peaceful presence in their homes. “Compared to figurative or representational work, my work echoes nature.
