Conrado Home Builders Your firm is celebrating its 30th anniversary. How has it evolved over the years? When we started, we were a mom-and-pop construction company headquartered in our basement. Nowadays, we’re a multi-generational, family-led firm of engineers, designers, project managers, site superintendents — a whole team committed to crafting outstanding estates. Originally, we built only new homes, but now we do whole house remodels as well as sitework and landscapes. We also have a full maintenance and service program for the homes we build.

What’s your specialty? We build complex, architecturally designed residential estates for families and individuals. That includes new custom homes and major renovations. We also have reputation for setting realistic timelines and budgets, and for exceptional customer service. We’re big on communicating regularly and transparently. Homebuilding is a service industry, and our job is to provide exceptional service. Any special projects you want to share? We don’t have special projects; we have special clients. People are what make this industry interesting. While we’re proud of the homes and estates we build, it’s the people we remember. You’re known for having robust pre-construction services? What are they? The pre-construction phase of our projects is where we work sideby-side with the design team and our clients to prepare detailed preliminary budgets, define and optimize project specifications, develop detailed scopes of work for the competitive bidding process and establish the project construction budget. Plus, we utilize our reputation and relationships with municipalities to assist with the permitting and approvals process.
What’s the benefit of your pre-construction services? Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to cut down a tree and I will spend the first four hours sharpening my axe.” We believe — strongly — that great outcomes come from thorough preparation and intelligent planning. Our pre-construction service optimizes cost, sets expectations and establishes the roadmap for a successful build. What’s more, our pricing is transparent, so our clients know before they start what their projects will cost and the various tradeoffs they’ve chosen that impact cost. What’s your approach to homebuilding? Our entire team is passionate about building and renovating homes. We love everything about it. We believe that there is no substitute for experience when it comes to custom home construction. For us, the best project outcomes are achieved with careful planning, solid teamwork — including the owner, the architect, the interior designer and the builder — and communication. Open, regular communication with our clients is a large part of what makes us unique. You’re known for building quality sustainable homes. Tell me more. We work hard to ensure that we minimize the environmental footprint of our projects. We focus on indoor air quality, sustainable materials and resource efficient homes. We have extensive experience with net-zero energy construction, as well as Passive house, LEED certification and GreenPoint Rated homes. As technologies evolve, sustainability is essential to building custom homes that last 100-plus years. I heard you take care of the homes you have built. What is Conrado HomeCare? Conrado HomeCare is a concierge service for homes. We believe homes are as dynamic and changing as the people who live in them. We maintain and service the homes we’ve built so they last generations as intended. With a custom home it’s impossible to know your needs in the years to come. We help the home evolve with you. Our HomeCare team takes a high touch approach. No job is too small for our team. We have changed lightbulbs and filters, upgraded major house equipment, as well as remodeled kitchens and baths. As custom homebuilders what type of homes do you live in? Our homes are as unique as the people who live in them. Paul’s home is an 80-year-old adobe ranch house that Conrado has restored. It’s basically a mini-farm with a vineyard, a vegetable garden and an olive orchard, all of which produce edible food for the community. Colleen lives in a 100-year-old Edwardian that is being lovingly restored. As the current steward of the home, her hope is to bring it into the present, but maintain the character, history, and quality that got it here. Sean's home is a 30-year old house in the mountains. He is in the process of transforming an early 1980's floor plan to a more open and contemporary home with a great room and higher ceilings.
