Art has always been a part of Lauren Pilla’s life, but it wasn’t until this year that she had truly surrendered. Change is uncomfortable and jarring at times, but that’s where the growth lies and in her case a return to who she always was – an artist. She had suppressed her gifts and spent a long time on a path she didn’t belong, later realizing it was all part of the divine process in order for her to arrive here.

Lauren spent most of her career working in male dominated industries where she tried to fit into a mold surrounded by people who wanted her to become their own vision, not hers. She had been stuck in a world driven by masculine energy. After years of being stifled and feeling like she had to prove herself in order to be accepted, she left the corporate world and embarked on her new creative journey; one that became quite healing and magical.

She went inward and put the focus back on her, putting herself first. This is the reason she herself is the main subject in her Surrender Series. It all began with vivid dreams about water, from which she started to put the pieces in motion, working with a local photographer to shoot her underwater capturing moments in time.

What is your Style?

I am a contemporary figurative oil painter who paints on canvas. My painting process starts with a traditional approach dating back to the old masters, doing an underpainting usually in raw umber, which is a monochromatic painting which functions as the foundation to determine the balance of light and dark areas, before the color layers are applied.

Share some insight on this series! The premise of this series is reclaiming the feminine energy. Water is a feminine earth element and the life force of everything in nature. It’s symbolic of the feminine spirit of oneness and receptive energy, which is why the floating poses in water capture a moment of stillness juxtaposed with regeneration. Water is shapeless, formless and cannot be confined, connecting back to the liberating moment of coming back to one’s-self. The fluidity of the chiffon is representative of the fabric of life. The threads that interweave our experiences and one’s pursuit for meaning and happiness.

I am in the process of planning my next series, which I am very excited about the concept and meaning behind it, stay tuned.

Elevating A St. Regis Residence in Rye, NY

The Lewis Design Group’s clients had relocated to Florida as full-time residents, yet wanted to maintain a part time presence in Westchester. They desired a turnkey lifestyle with luxury amenities, as they spent the majority of their time in Florida. The new St. Regis Residences in Rye were the perfect fit.

They purchased while the project was under construction during Covid lockdown, and there were no models available for any of the units, so they worked off a floorplan to fully design the space.

Barbara Lewis, principal of the The Lewis Design Group, recommends decorating condominiums and apartments in less color and more neutrals, utilizing more textures and tones to enhance elegance and create spaciousness. In this building, the architectural style is a modern take on country from the outside. The client wanted a more contemporary/ transitional look, so the apartment needed to be sleek and sophisticated, a bit monochromatic, with a contemporary “classic yet current” style. They decided on a predominately neutral pallet with pops of soft color. The open floor pan was a key indicator to use similar colors throughout.

The next part of the design and décor process was determining which pieces from the Scarsdale home would be a part of the new residence. Then began the hunt of finding some vintage and unique pieces to mix in with what had been ordered. They found the dining room table base, suede living room chairs, and a beautiful lacquer credenza from the 60’s. These three pieces set the tone for the design direction they would take, providing a nice contrast to the Nierman Weeks Demilume the client kept from their Scarsdale home.

Construction was delayed due to Covid and supply chain issues, and it took a year and a half longer to complete. Fortunately, because of the construction delays, all items initially ordered were ready for delivery upon move in.

BARBARA LEWIS

The dining table has one of Lewis’ signature designs, a custom made two-person banquette at each end of the table. Barbara shares, “We were fortunate to find the mid-’60’s Brutist style dining table base and vintage suede living room chairs from the same period. The beautiful suede on the chairs further solidified the decision for a neutral palette.” The dining room art piece was commissioned from a gallery in Greenwich, the subject resonating with the wife and her love of ballerinas. The dining room chandelier from Curry & Company, “Forest Light,” debuted at High Point and has rock crystal as one of its elements.

The demilune by Niermann Weeks was brought from the client’s Scarsdale home, and the lamps are Murano glass from Avery & Dash in Stamford, CT. The clear glass allows the sightline to remain open and not block or fight with the artwork.

The two chairs are vintage from a dealer in the Hamptons, from the 60s Brutus period. They were quite the find, perfectly upholstered in gorgeous suede and kept as they are. The brass legs work very well with the dining room chandelier.

The rugs are 100% wool, tone on tone leopard, with the raised spots providing a three-dimensional contrast. They add panache and style, while remaining subtle elegant.

The inspiration for the Primary Bedroom came from a Phillip Jeffries Mural. Given the location of the Primary Suite and the layout, it allowed us to leave the door open, yet you don’t see the bedroom. The colors in the mural work perfectly with the living room and dining room, allowing for a pleasing continuity.

In the den, the vintage Mrs. McDougal coffee table works perfectly with the artwork from the client’s Scarsdale home and the Vanguard sleeper sofa. All lighting in the den is by Visual Comfort. Artwork was also from client’s Scarsdale home.

The location of the Guest Bedroom allowed for something a bit different, but yet on the same side of the color wheel. The Peter Faisano fabric has been a great hit with the client’s grandchildren, as well as providing enough sophistication for the adult guests when balanced with the Arte Grasscloth on the walls.

In designing the Great Room I immediately referenced some of the beautiful rooms I have loved in the great houses of Europe: The loggia/ winter garden at the Villa Brandolini has always captured my imagination. It is filled with climbing plants, trees, rattan and wicker. The countess Brandolini and family were beautifully photographed by Horst in the 1970s. I also had the pleasure of visiting Cetinali with Lord Lambton and Claire Ward outside Siena in the early 90s. The piano nobile was furnished in a grand Italian way, but had the comfort and style that only the English aristocrats can pull off. It had a huge effect on me. A third important reference for this room is Mon Repos, built in 1828 in Corfu for the British

High Commissioner to the Aeolian Islands. It became the summer residence for the Greek royal family, and later captured my enormous admiration as the fictitional villa of the Countess Mavrodaki in the Durrells of Corfu.

I always seek to create timeless interiors with furniture and pieces that cannot easily be traced to obvious sources. We were kindly lent beautiful timeless antiques to ground the perimeters of this great room. We then peppered it with comfortable upholstery, crisp linens and cotton fabrics to reflect our tropical environment as is often seen in other projects I do around the world.

To tell the story of POST, let us introduce you to a couple of our young patients.

At 2 years old, Jenna was an active, curious toddler with an infectious laugh and a mischievous smile. Like many girls her age Jenna enjoyed watching and playing with Minnie Mouse, Paw Patrol, and Peppa Pig. Therefore, it was beyond shocking to her single mom, Martha, when she was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2021. Jenna had started passing out, so Martha took her to the doctor, but she never expected this. How could this vibrant little girl full of life, personality, and charm suddenly have cancer?

Jenna got a port surgically placed in her little chest and started a four-year chemotherapy plan. Martha kept a brave face in front of her only daughter but periodically had to step out of her hospital room to shed tears where Jenna could not see. She shared her fears with POST therapists who gave her advice and support. Martha lies next to her young daughter, watching her sleep and cries about all this little girl is having to go through – all that she cannot protect her from. She tries

hard to keep her daughter’s life as normal as possible and dreams of the day that cancer will be just a memory. She is beyond grateful that POST has helped with rent, gas cards, and groceries so she can manage during this trying time.

Another brave young cancer survivor, Elijah, was first diagnosed in April 2014 at the age of 5 with very high risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He went through 3½ years of grueling treatment with POST care team members by his side every step of the way providing support and encouragement. After cancer, Elijah’s family were finally back to living a “normal life,” which for Elijah meant going to school and playing with friends. Four years later the unthinkable happened – Elijah was back in the ER with bone pain which led to the news that his cancer was back. The treatment this time was even tougher, and he had to undergo a bone marrow transplant – a dangerous procedure in which his body’s immune system was wiped out by chemotherapy and replaced with his brother’s healthy cells. Through it all, his family relied on POST as well as their deep faith in God. Today Elijah is cancer free. He is doing well, gaining strength, and ready to face the future.

This year Elijah is serving as the Event Ambassador for the 2023 Gold Ribbon Heroes Luncheon to raise much needed funds so POST can continue to help local children battle cancer.

The Gold Ribbon Heroes Luncheon “25th Silver Royal Jubilee” will be held on Wednesday, May 10th, from 11a – 2 pm at Frenchmans Reserve Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, hosted by event chairs Lori McAlear and Vic Kozuria.

The South Florida Luxury Real Estate Market had some of the most unprecedented years of growth from 2020 – 2022; however, Q1 2023 sees the market normalizing to a more standard growth versus the exorbitant activity seen during the “pandemic” migration to Florida.

With rising interest rates, high inflation, and rising costs, the market corrected itself in Q1 2023, increasing inventory by 153.8% for months’ supply of inventory from 1.3 months to 3.3 months year over year (comparing February 2023 to February 2022 market data). The increase in inventory, coupled with an increase in median time to sale of 32.8%, decreased pending sales by -12.7%, but increased the median sales price by 4.2%. Proving that the South Florida Market is still a safe and lucrative investment.
