hether he is focusing his camera on the blurring of sand and sea, the slope of a hill or the curvature of the human form, fine art photographer Nathan Coe always strives to align traditional images with the current zeitgeist, often with a sprinkle of cheeky whimsy or deep reflection. Sometimes both. A darling of Hollywood and hedge-fund collectors, Nathan’s limited edition prints have sold for up to $70,000. “Nathan’s work comes from a natural and genuine place. It’s come off as both organic and original,” says art gallery owner Ron Cavalier, who was the first to represent Coe in Nantucket, and then in New York. “His images project both a soothing simplicity and complex undertones.” Born in England, Nathan Coe studied photography in Gloucestershire. Shortly after graduating, he settled in Palm Beach, met his wife and together they relocated to Nantucket. It was there that Nathan honed his photographic skills as a magazine’s creative director and “the” society wedding photographer. The latter took him all over the world and his weddings appeared in places like Vogue and Town & Country. But when two children were thrown into the mix, Nathan decided to skip the off-season Nantucket winters and decamp with his family back to his original stopping grounds: Palm Beach. In keeping with his wanderlust persona, and in order to stay connected with his Northeast collectors, today Nathan is dividing his time between Palm Beach (winter) and

Nantucket (summer). In each location, and in each season, he looks to produce up to seven captivating images. “Nantucket is a beautiful canvas for photography and it’s where it all began for me professionally,” says Coe. “Palm Beach, while different, opens up new opportunities of visuals and beauty. There is a reason why both these places have been visitor magnets for generations.” When he’s not shooting with his camera, Nathan is in scouting mode, searching iconic locations (isolated dunes, a hotel pool, a laundromat?) and creative directing in his mind’s eye on how he can bring a fresh perspective to a familiar haunt. This season, he took a model into the Norton Museum of Art and shot a series titled “Art within Art.” His Norton exhibit at C+C Gallery on Worth Avenue is creating quite a stir. “Being in this world renowned museum was an honor for me, as it’s always served as a huge source of inspiration.” So who best to artfully share the most important and most overlooked spots in two of the most coveted resort locations? From New York to Palm Beach, Meg Braff’s journey into interior design is a testimony of passion and dedication. A graduate of Vanderbilt and later Parsons School of Design, Meg cut her teeth at prestigious New York design firms. By 24, she was not only married but also a visionary entrepreneur, founding her own design business in 1996. Juggling motherhood with four boys and a burgeoning career, Meg’s flair for design soon had her embarking on projects on Jupiter Island and Palm Beach—a place intertwined with family traditions and long-standing friendships. After 21 years of continuous work in the area, the allure of Palm Beach’s exquisite homes and architecture eventually drew her to make it her family’s permanent base in 2019. A few years ago, Meg transformed a once-gritty print shop on Georgia Ave. into a design haven, further cementing Palm Beach’s reputation as a vibrant design mecca.

Meg Braff was one of the 2019 Kips Bay Palm Beach Showhouse designers. Her bedroom and bathroom were themed “Sunrise Jungle.”

With projects spanning from Palm Beach, Maine, Nantucket to New York, her interior design artfully infuses elegance and vitality from coastal havens to metropolitan estates. Meg’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through with her wallpaper company; she owns the historical archives to seven different lines, which now serve as a canvas for her to reimagine color and texture. Each year, she revitalizes over 30 SKUs, injecting modern hues into classic designs. As Meg shares, “Whenever we start a new project we can go to the archives, find something we haven’t done before and make it uniquely theirs.” The wallpaper coordinates well with her own fabric line, a collection of in-stock prints. The wallpapers and fabrics are hand screen printed in New Jersey, while the outdoor fabrics are printed in Italy. Complete with an array of outdoor options, her products allow her to deliver a unique look with luxurious, bespoke design.

Homestead Planning for Florida Residents with Minor Children By William G. “Bill” Smith, LL.M. and Erica R. Haft, LL.M Florida’s homestead protections are deemed to be some of the strongest in the country and thus a compelling consideration for individuals deciding to relocate to Florida. After all, Florida’s Constitution provides that creditors are generally unable to force a sale of a homestead. Therefore, by maintaining a homestead, Florida residents are engaging in asset protection planning of what is typically one of their most valuable assets. But with these protections come limitations on how the homestead may be devised should the owner pass away. A homestead owned jointly by spouses will pass automatically to the surviving spouse. However, a problematic aspect of Florida homestead law arises when a decedent who owns a homestead in his or her own name is survived by at least one minor child. If the decedent is married at the time of death, the spouse receives a life estate in the homestead and the decedent’s descendants receive equal remainder interest. The spouse does have the option to elect a 50% tenants in common interest in the homestead, and if the election were made the descendants would receive the other 50% as tenants in common. The same result occurs regardless of whether the decedent died without a will, or with a will or trust which devises the homestead to the decedent’s spouse or to a trust for the decedent’s spouse or children. This result occurs because any devise of the homestead fails when the decedent is survived by at least one minor child. This limitation on devise is designed to protect the spouse and the minor children to ensure that they have a place of shelter even if there is a lack of liquid assets in the decedent’s estate, but, unfortunately, this limitation prohibits any devise to a trust for these same individuals. Another consequence of Florida’s limitation on devise is that the minor children who receive vested interests in the homestead must be appointed a guardian by the court, and the guardian is responsible for the homestead until the child reaches age 18. Guardianships, however, have many downsides such as the ongoing expenses required to obtain court approval for minor and large decisions, the preparation of accountings annually, compensating the guardian, and the fact that the minor child would receive unrestricted access to the assets upon attaining age 18.

There is an estate planning technique to place the homestead in a trust for the benefit of the children and thereby avoid the need for a guardianship for any minor child. The technique is to create an Irrevocable Homestead Trust for the benefit of the children while one or both parents are still alive. To do this, the parents would transfer the remainder interest in the homestead to the trustee of an Irrevocable Homestead Trust, retaining for themselves a life estate, which would maintain the homestead status of the property (i.e., creditor protections and ad valorem tax benefits) during the parents’ lifetimes. The parents would maintain control of the homestead during their lifetimes through their life estate and as trustees of the trust, and full title to the homestead would revert back to one or both of the parents upon the youngest child reaching age 18. This technique also allows the parents to appoint a successor Trustee who would be responsible for administering the homestead for the benefit of the children, which bypasses the need for guardianship and probate court intervention.
