Susan Hallmark Elegance
from Homes to Horses Susan Hallmark’s easygoing nature and
immaculate style might be mistaken for the charms of a lady of leisure. With current listings totaling around $18 million, her responsibilities would overwhelm less composed agents. When she was President of Hallmark Bradfield Properties and later Susan Hallmark Realtors, those reserves of calm helped her keep her cool. While her family keeps her balanced, an unusual hobby also has given her many years of pleasure and reward: breeding miniature horses. “The horses were my therapy,” she says, smiling at the thought. “After managing 300 agents in eight offices, I would go home to my horses and all the trials of the day would disappear. Miniatures are very loving and sweet-natured.” Susan’s husband of 50 years, builder/developer Denny Hallmark, surprised her with a miniature horse on their 25th wedding anniversary because she was afraid of her sons’ normal sized versions. They purchased more for breeding and showing competitively, eventually becoming one of the

largest breeding farms in the country with 80 miniature horses. While miniatures are too small to ride, like large dogs, their strong backs are suited for pulling carts.

“Our horses won many national championships in both halter and performance classes,” says Susan, “and now belong to owners in Paris, Denmark, South Africa, London and throughout the U.S.” Though the Hallmarks have now sold their miniatures, their barn wasn’t empty for long. Last year a friend asked Susan to drive her horse, Ally, in the American Miniature Horse Registry’s National Championship – and she won.
“I’ve sold a lot of luxury homes on ranches because I can talk about the wells, fencing and barns as well as the homes themselves,” she says. “I love elegance, from houses to horses.”
“Then I fell in love with the horse and bought her,” Susan says. A native San Antonian, Susan has always loved the Hill Country and is fortunate Denny began developing land and building luxury homes near Boerne, Sisterdale, Fredericksburg and Bandera. With each new project, the family moved to new acreage where their sons, Trey and Troy, enjoyed riding their horses, hunting and fishing. The
